The internet and mobile phones have quickly taken over our day-to-day lives, often making it easier in ways such as GPS directions, quick Google searches, and sending emails from wherever you are. Lotus house presents the Launch of onDemand Fitness

After 15 years in business, Lotus House, LLC is keeping up with the times and launching their newly developed fitness yoga app. The pandemic hit the fitness industry hard, specifically yoga studios because of the close proximity to others inside the studio.

BBB opens2023 torch Awards for ethics Applications

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has opened the applications for the 2023 Torch Awards for Ethics.

The BBB Torch Awards for Ethics honors organizations whose leaders demonstrate a high level of personal character; ensure that the organization’s practices meet the highest standards of ethics; and consequently generate trust with its customers and the community. The Torch Award embodies BBB’s mission of advancing business trust. BBB has four separate Torch Awards competitions –Metro Omaha/Southwest Iowa, Lincoln/Greater Nebraska, South Dakota, and the Kansas Plains

Entries are evaluated by one of four independent, voluntary panels of judges from either Omaha, Lincoln, Sioux Falls, or Wichita. Each panel is comprised of members from the business, nonprofit, and academic sectors of their communities. Your written submission, including examples, stories, and documents, should provide a robust and accurate depiction of your organization’s focus on character, culture, customers, and community. Supporting documents and attachments can range from handbooks, internal documentation, or photos from events.

omaha’s Methodist hospital halfway through $18.6M Renovation

In an effort to meet a growing demand for hospital-based care with safety and satisfaction top of mind for patients and staff, Methodist Hospital is undergoing a more than $18.6 million renovation.

The renovation includes the opening of two new units, which will be equipped with more than 50 patient beds, patient-monitoring technology, and adaptability features to address a variety of unique care needs.

The Progressive Care Unit (4 North), which opened in December, is dedicated to patients needing cardiac, vascular, and thoracic care. The Medical Observation Unit (5 North), which is slated to open in summer 2023, will be home to patients who may need extra care and monitoring after a medical event or procedure. Both units have added security features and negative air-flow capabilities.

“If we learned anything from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s that time is of the essence in mitigating spread,” said Josie Abboud, president and CEO of Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women’s Hospital. “Although we already have airborne infection isolation rooms established throughout the hospital, it was important that our new units were designed with the ability to implement even more of these rooms quickly and efficiently.”

Each new patient room was designed with added privacy, flexibility, more storage, and modernized aesthetics. These features will help optimize staff workflow while enhancing the patient experience. The newly renovated floors mark Methodist Hospital’s first opportunity for significant acute care space since June 2010.

Leadership Sarpy holds important Discussion Around Communication in Crisis Leadership

Leadership Sarpy participants got to ask a panel of experts several important questions on public communication in a crisis. The panel included Annette Eyman, director of communications Papillion La Vista Community Schools; Jeff Calentine, deputy director of public works, City of La Vista; Matt Hardebeck, director, innovation and continuous improvement, Omaha Public Power District; and Captain Jeremy Kinsey, City of La Vista Police Department.

All of these speakers shared valuable insight from their own experiences as well as unique insight into the numerous times their organizations needed to coordinate and collaborate.

The group also heard from Captain Kevin Griger with the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department.

Griger outlined the tragic events surrounding an active shooter situation in Colorado in 2006 that lead to the creation of I Love You Guys Foundation, an organization that dedicated its efforts to creating an effective plan for schools in a crisis situation. The result was the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), a unified plan for the four school districts in Sarpy County.

Griger has worked to adapt this plan to businesses and gave an overview of how it works. The Sarpy Sheriff’s Department will work with businesses in the county to teach SRP and help businesses implement it. The session was impactful and eyeopening for many Leadership Sarpy participants.

Earlier in the day, participants were given the opportunity to test their own skills and knowledge through a crisis simulation. They were tasked with making hard decisions in hard situations while also trying to communicate internally as an organization and externally to the public.

Crisis management is a critical organizational function for a business and it encompasses more than just violence. It should also account for weather, fire, injury or illness. Failure can result in serious harm to employees and stakeholders, losses for an organization, or even end its very existence. This is why the topic of crisis management is an integral part of Leadership Sarpy, a program that develops people personally and professionally for leadership positions not only in their place of work, but in the community as a whole. Cornhusker State games opens Registration for 2023

The 39th Annual Cornhusker State Games will be held July 1430 at more than 70 sites in Omaha, Lincoln, and surrounding communities. Registration is now open for most sports, with the first registration price increase to occur on February 21. The 2023 t-shirt deadline is June 21. T-shirts will be shipped directly to you if the order is placed before the deadline.

pepperJax grill Moves headquarters Back to nebraska

PepperJax Grill, an Omaha-founded restaurant chain that for a time moved its headquarters out of Nebraska, has returned its corporate flag to the city where it started 20 years ago.

The resaurant, positioning itself for area growth, bought and opened a nearly 4,000-square-foot building off of 144th St. and Interstate 80 for its national operations and field team base.

The stand-alone structure is near one of PepperJax’s newly opened Omaha area stores. Nationally, the fast-casual restaurant chain, which features the Philly cheesesteak sandwich and more, made to order in front of the customer, has about 30 stores in five states. Besides Nebraska, PepperJax is in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and South Dakota.

“Staging ourselves for growth, we wanted to have a hub in our home roots,” said Erin Palladino, chief operating officer. “We started in Omaha, so for us it’s kind of this poetic thing about returning with a headquarters right back where it all began.”

The Omaha return caps a series of shifts that included an ownership change in 2016. This change took the headquarters from Omaha to Denver. In late 2017, another new owner took over, and Nebraska native Brett Weis soon after moved the corporate team and headquarters to Kearney, Nebraska.

heartland Workers Center Focuses on Workplace Safety

At Heartland Workers Center (HWC), safety is about more than reducing the number of claims a company files in a year; it’s a tool for retention, employee engagement, and overall well-being.

Keeping employees returning to work is even more important considering two major predicaments, one being the current unemployment rate, which sits at 2.4% for the State of Nebraska as of October 2022. The second is increased cash flow for construction projects courtesy of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

HWC offers leadership development programs, a worker’s rights program, and a worker’s action program to help spread awareness and open communication between employees and employers. Dave’s hot Chicken opens new Location in omaha

On January 13, Dave’s Hot Chicken opened its newest Nebraska restaurant location in Omaha. The new Dave’s Hot Chicken location is at 335 N Saddle Creek Rd., near Chipotle Mexican Grill, Starbucks, and the Indian Creek Plant Nursery. The chain is set to open at least four more locations in the US this year.

Dave’s Hot Chicken originated in East Hollywood in 2017 when three friends made a $900 investment toward a small stand in a parking lot. It has now grown into one of the fastest-growing restaurants in America, according to Technomic, a third-party research company.

“Our menu is super simple. Chicken is our star and superpower,” said Dylan Bitticks, manager of restaurant openings. “We serve these giant, Nashville-style halal chicken tenders in various heat levels.”

The fast-casual chicken restaurant offers six heat options, from no spice to Carolina Reaper.

Children’s hospital & Medical Center plans new Facility at 204th And harrison Streets

Children’s Hospital & Medical Center has announced plans for a new pediatric ambulatory facility to be constructed at 204th and Harrison Streets, anticipated to open spring 2024. The new location will provide ease of access and convenient ambulatory care by expanding Children’s specialty locations to meet the needs of pediatric patients and families in the Omaha Metropolitan Area and across the region.

The planned two-story, 60,000-square-foot facility will house several specialty clinics, a Children’s Physicians primary care office, and outpatient rehabilitation spaces, as well as radiology and laboratory services. The rehabilitation space will offer access to an outdoor area for services, a first for Children’s.

“This development will allow Children’s to meet the needs of ambulatory patients in a convenient location and in a setting tailored for their needs, while also positioning Children’s for long-term growth,” said Kathy English, Children’s executive vice president, chief operating officer, and chief nursing officer.

Construction is set to begin soon on the ten acres of land, and the site offers ample space for future building phases.

Omaha Performing Arts is excited to announce that Steelhouse Omaha, located near 11th and Dodge St., will have its grand opening weekend starting May 12.

The venue, which will hold up to 3,000 people when it opens, is being developed in a former parking lot between Dodge St. and Capitol Ave., east of 12th St., across from the Holland Performing Arts Center.

Steelhouse Omaha will offer a midrange concert venue for shows too large for the Orpheum Theater and too small for the CHI Health Center. The facility is the latest part of Omaha Performing Arts’ planned expansion of its arts and entertainment campus near the Holland Center. The project was designed by Ennead Architects in partnership with local firm Holland Basham Architects.

The announcement came less than a week after Omaha Performing Arts said it is adding a new $103 million Center for Arts Engagement to its downtown campus. The new facility will be built on the east side of the Holland Center. Fundraising is underway to cover the costs of the building.

The Center for Arts Engagement will sit on the green lawn space between Dodge and Douglas streets. Omaha Performing Arts said it will fill the need for additional rehearsal, workroom, and classroom space.

Kamp Blackstone Brings elevated Approach to traditional Dining

Omaha’s newest food hall, Kamp Blackstone, brings an elevated approach to traditional dining. The business opened at the end of November following the June closure of Switch, which had occupied the space at 3618 Farnam St. for two years. The food hall is the latest business venture for the Extra Credit Group. Michael Sanchez and partner Jake Dawson kept Switch’s multiplevendor design but replaced the eateries with concept restaurants unique to the Kamp location.

Kamp is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and it is nothing if not eclectic. The interior features colorful decorations, quirky murals, neon lights, psychedelic fonts, and multiple homages to Kamp’s logo, a lion’s head. Lo-fi hip-hop (a type of downtempo music) plays over the speakers as people type on their computers, enjoy a drink, or try out one of Kamp’s concept food establishments.

The Kamp bar, in the center of the open-concept space, also opened last year. Happy hour is all-day Monday and from 2 to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Tell us a little about your business. - North Risk Partners is a Midwest-based insurance company that prioritizes service to their clients. The main thing that drew me towards working in insurance and specifically with North Risk Partners is that I get to help people. We strive to find the best insurance opportunities for local businesses of all sizes. The connections I make with the community around me are what excite me for work every day.

How did you get started in the business? - I got started in the business through my mom. She has worked in the same office for about 15 years, so I basically grew up around the people in the office. It felt really natural joining their office culture and it just made sense to me. I knew who I was going to get to work with and I couldn’t imagine better mentors for a young adult just starting college.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge I have faced professionally is being so young. When I communicate with clients for the first time and they can tell I am young, they sometimes question or doubt me. Once I show them that I am capable and know the business, they do a complete 180 and come to me for anything after that.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - The most important achievement I’ve had professionally so far is establishing a name for myself in my company so early on in my career. North Risk is a very large company across numerous states, so I didn’t expect people I had never talked to, to know me. When I get the chance to meet new people, I’m proud to hear I have a reputation of hard work and positivity. That’s my ideal combination of adjectives for my work ethic.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - If I were to choose any other profession to be successful in, I would want it to be teaching kindergarten. Before I started in insurance, I worked at a daycare for most of my high school experience. I loved bonding with the kids and watching them learn new things each and every day. My desire to work in an industry that truly makes a difference started here.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - The last good book I read was Believe It: How to Go from Underestimated to Unstoppable by Jamie Kern Lima.

Tell us a little about your business. - FNIC has been providing risk management solutions for over 100 years. Our priority is working with clients to protect their people, assets, and reputations. We educate, advise, and add value so that our clients can effectively manage their businesses. I concentrate on helping contractors and business owners understand and qualify for surety bond guarantees to win new projects and grow their companies.

How did you get started in the business? - I took a sales role with The Harry A. Koch Co. out of college selling personal lines insurance for my first year. From there I started consulting with small businesses on their property and casualty coverages until I was given the opportunity to join the surety department in 2008. I’ve been focusing on surety bonding ever since.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Leading and re-building a surety department during the pandemic presented constant hurdles, but I’m proud of the perseverance my team showed. Tell us a little about your family. - My wife of 12 years, Lindsey, is a physical therapist specializing in women’s health. We are on the go chasing our seven-year-old, Hayden, and two-year-old, Jaylee.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - My father, Gary, passed away in 2012 from a rare form of cancer. He was my best friend and mentored me as I got into the risk management business, so losing him forced me to go outside of my comfort zone. Now that I’m a dad I appreciate all the sacrifices he made for our family growing up.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I’m an avid golfer, so any time I can break away to hit the links is a good day. Otherwise, I enjoy smoking meats and outdoor grilling whenever I can.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I managed to make three hole-in-ones in one year back in 2008/2009. Dumb luck!

Who inspires you? - I’m fortunate to have a great family that pushes me to be better every day. My two older brothers are great husbands, fathers, and role models.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Personal growth only takes place when you step outside your comfort zone.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – I was diagnosed with a severe chronic kidney disease when I was 12 and had to undergo chemotherapy. I was bullied for most of my early years until high school because of my weight and how I looked, and being surrounded with that growing up, it’s hard to build your identity and self confidence. I was scared of risks, I was afraid of making mistakes, and I did my best to stay within my comfort zone. Almost a year ago, I decided to move and focus on my career. I needed a space where I could really build myself and my identity as a “growthbacker” from the ground up with solid foundations, and I believe that being in a safe and healthy environment is a big factor for growth. Because of the opportunity I have, I am able to do what I enjoy doing while making sure that my family is well provided for. Not a lot of people know, but Craig, our CEO, is big on personal and career growth. Our team is always reading books together. We have dedicated Zoom huddles on a daily basis to share our thoughts with each other and it is one of my favorite things about being part of this company. I like learning and growing and being uncomfortable. It has been a big transformation from who I was a few years ago, and I’m really proud of myself for it.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I am 7,833 miles away from Nebraska. I was born and raised in the Philippines and still am in the Philippines while working with Donald Kracke for Cyberbacker Nebraska-Iowa.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – “You are right where you’re supposed to be.” This calms me down whenever I am going through a rough day or when I’m frustrated. In life, there will always be people that come and go and circumstances that happen to us that are meant to teach us something. It might not make sense right away, but as time goes by, we look back at certain things that happened in our life and get that “aha” moment of realizing what it was for.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – I am big on education and business. I am currently preparing to be able to support children born in poverty with their education. My longterm goal is to be able to provide jobs for thousands if not millions of people to help them succeed in life. I am actually currently achieving my goal by providing jobs for our Cyberbackers. For each client that I help determine their needs, I help one person from the Philippines get a stable job in the comfort of their own home so that their kids won’t have to grow up like how I did with my parents having to work overseas to provide for our family.

Tell us a little about your business. - We are a business C.A.R.E. company that specializes in providing community, accountability, results, and education to growing businesses. Five years ago, we noticed that often business owners do not have the educational pathways that most other corporate entities have. This has resulted in good, hard working people lacking the simple tools that make their work easier and more enjoyable.

How did you get started in the business? - From high school, all the way up through the last job I held, I always struggled with the complacent nature of most tasks. The idea of doing work entirely disconnected from the end product was pretty frustrating. I now know this feeling as the entrepreneurial seizure that Michael Gerber talks about in The E-Myth. At a certain point I knew it was time to jump, so I worked with my supervisors to eliminate my positions, and started out as a business coach.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- My most important achievement so far has been receiving the Rookie Coach of the Year award I won in my first year. The reason I choose this is because it is the outcome of achieving success for my clients, not for me. I have always set my goals based on the success of those I serve and coach. In order for them to have achieved so much that I won an award means so much more than the awards themselves.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have been happily married to my wife Joy for seven years now. We have three AMAZING kids. Rachel is five, Benjamin is three, and Eliza is one, as well as one more due in July! My wife is our church’s accountant as well as a member of the air guard in Sioux City.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I am a high school basketball coach, a church youth director, and a board member for a handful of impact agencies. Otherwise, I spend a good amount of time reading or taking online classes for some area I am trying to learn.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I love travel! I love the stories I get from my trips. I have eaten crickets in Mexico, been detained (kind of) by undercover Italian police, and been held up at knifepoint by a “freedom fighter” at the temple to Hephaestus in Athens. I recognize that by reading that list, you may not think it sounds that fun but I survived and have stories to tell!

Who inspires you? - My mother has always inspired me for her ability to overcome obstacles and continue to ask “what can we do”. My father inspires me in his living example of humility, loyalty, and kindness. My pastors inspire me in their faith and willingness to stand up for what is right no matter the cost. My wife inspires me in her work ethic and grace under pressure (which comes often married to me).

How did you get started in the business? - I started working in human services by universal circumstance. I needed a job to help pay for college expenses. I started working as a direct support professional in a group home.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Accepting that as a leader I have flaws, and that working constantly and consistently on myself is the only way to lead others effectively. One of the biggest mistakes I see leaders make over and over is never looking within to see one’s part in a situation. Through my experience I have learned that knowing, owning, and learning from my part not only makes me a better leader, but makes my team and whole organization better.

Tell us a little about your family. - I am married to a wonderful man, Aaron. We have two dogs named Bella and Zeppelin, and two cats named Nala and Dolce. We love spending time traveling to new places, and experiencing all life has to offer.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Getting sober when I was 28-years-old. To date this has been the best decision of my life. It has changed me in ways that I didn’t know were possible.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spending time with my husband outside in our yard making memories and improving our landscaping.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I am a thrill seeker. I love riding motorcycles and skydiving to name a few go-to things.

Who inspires you? - My mother-in-law Cathy. She is so strong in her faith, and her dedication to her family is something that I admire dearly. When she talks of her life’s work, and when I watch her gracefully enter any situation I feel a deep sense of gratitude to be in her life.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Courageous.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - The last book I read was Educated by Tara Westover. This book really was intense for me. Tell us a little about your business. - Strictly Business is a local news and direct marketing magazine in Omaha and Lincoln that is strong in print and online. With over 29 years of experience, we are proud of our reputation as a reliable and positive publication and grateful for the opportunity to promote so many amazing local businesses and organizations each month.

How did you get started in the business? - I went to school at East Tennessee State University and studied public relations and advertising, as I’ve always had a love for all things surrounding writing, media, and marketing. I’ve had various jobs since then, including human resources and even being a barista for a year! I moved from Lafayette, CO to Lincoln in July of 2022 with my husband and two pups, and I was lucky enough to come across Strictly Business ’ job posting. After meeting Paige and the team, I already felt at home.

Tell us a little about your family. - My mom is originally from Turkey, and we still have quite a bit of family there. She lives in the same small Tennessee town I was born in. My older brother lives in Florida, and so do my husband’s parents, sister and brotherin-law, and our two beautiful nieces. My husband Joe and I have two fur children, Ollie and Ovi!

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - My name is always a hot topic! It’s spelled Cemre, but pronounced “Gem-rah”. It’s Turkish and it’s a word that encompasses the signs of seasons changing, like leaves dropping in the fall or water getting warm in summer. I always say my mom obviously wanted me to be outgoing with the name she gave me - I always have an ice breaker!

Who inspires you? - My best friend, Mandi, is an incredible example of what it means to be a hard-working person. She always has meaningful, sound advice and has built a beautiful life for herself and her family. I look up to her and am grateful to have such a solid person in my life.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - I don’t know if this is my greatest talent, but I have several corners of my home full of random crafting hobbies that I’ve been into over the years. No one at the office has asked me to cross stitch them something, but if they did, I could make it happen. If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - I would love to be a full time artist.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?The last good book I read was Letters From Istanbul by Lucy Foley. It’s a really moving story.

What is your favorite movie? - I love the movie 500 Days of Summer.

Mosaic elects omaha’s Dr. Adam Wells to its Board of Directors

Mosaic, a nonprofit, whole-person healthcare network headquartered in Omaha that serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 13 states including Nebraska, has elected Dr. Adam Wells to serve a three-year term on its Mosaic Board of Directors.

Wells is a pulmonologist with Methodist Physicians Clinic Pulmonary Medicine Specialists and is the medical director for Nebraska Methodist College’s Respiratory Care Program.

“I have a son who has intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD),” said Wells. “As he’s grown older, his needs have increased. As we searched for support services, it became apparent how limited resources are for that population, even when someone in their family is ‘well-connected’ in the medical field or in the ‘right’ community or knows the ‘right’ people. I’m sure many families get extremely frustrated looking for support for their loved one with IDD and give up.”

The Mosaic Board of Directors hold in responsibility the trust and welfare of people who support and depend upon Mosaic. This includes those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), their families, donors, and the Lutheran churches with which Mosaic holds an affiliation.

Yohanna Santana of Christian Record Services Receives promotion

Epilepsy Foundation Nebraska, the leading advocate for the nearly 20,000 people living with epilepsy in Nebraska, is pleased to announce that Heather Bernard has joined the team as the new executive director.

Heather attended Ball State University in Indiana where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She then moved to Georgia where she taught in the Georgia Public School system. While teaching, she attended Valdosta State University and earned her master’s degree in social work.

Heather practiced as a social worker at a nonprofit agency working with adults with developmental disabilities. Heather changed things up and shifted to working in the neuroscience department at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she built and ran a Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Event Clinic. She also opened and operated a private practice where she provided psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and young adults.

Heather moved to Omaha in 2021 after accepting a position with Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. In her new role, she is excited to help champion epilepsy awareness, education, and research in Nebraska. Heather resides in Omaha with her husband of almost 18 years and two children.

Angela McGraw has been named executive director of Girls Incorporated of Omaha. Girls Inc. Board of Directors President Amy Lawrenson announced that McGraw will succeed retiring Executive Director Roberta Wilhelm beginning January 17.

omaha Mayor Stothert Appoints gerald Kuhn as Director of human Rights and Relations

Mayor Jean Stothert’s office has recently announced the appointment of a new director of human rights and relations.

Gerald Kuhn is being promoted to the position, having been appointed to fill the post temporarily while the city conducted a national search. He had previously served as the assistant director of the department for five years.

Gerald has also been the city’s Americans with Disabilities director, where he developed the successful Restorative Justice Diversion Program for misdemeanor arrests such as Resisting Arrest, Obstruction, and Disorderly Conduct, which has become a national model.

Prior to that, Gerald served as executive director of the Omaha Early Learning Center and the director of Vocational Services for Mosaic of Omaha. He also served as director of residential services for the Detroit Housing Commission. Gerald has his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in social justice and counseling. He also serves as a mentor for 100 Black Men of Omaha and volunteers as a coach. He has been a board member for Boy Scouts of America, the Refugee Task Force, Jesuit Academy, and Metro Area Youth Services. The Human Rights and Relations Department has four major responsibilities for the City of Omaha: Civil Rights Investigations and Enforcement Support Services, Economic Equity and Inclusion Program Administration, Community Outreach and Education, and a Restorative Justice Program for people who commit misdemeanor offenses. Mosaic in omaha promotes national intellectual andDevelopmentalDisabilitiesMonth

Being able to choose how you spend your day is a fundamental right that was long denied to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Mosaic is changing that by empowering people with IDD through support and advocacy. March is National Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which celebrates the achievements people with IDD make when given the chance. Mosaic highlights the month and the importance of choice with the theme, “My day, my way!”

Here in Omaha, Sarah shows what it means to live “my day, my way!” She enjoys volunteering in the Omaha community, one of her favorites being with Sacred Seed, a partner with Mosaic that helps Sarah become an advocate for our environment and for our Omaha Community. We’re happy to support Sarah to do the things that she finds meaningful.

Child Saving Institute (CSI) is looking to enhance the future of care in the Omaha community as it plans to expand its services and physical footprint by launching a $46 million capital campaign. CSI’s Campaign for Hope will allow the organization to continue to meet the dynamic needs of those it serves today, and over the next 100 years.

CSI has diligently evaluated the evolving needs of local children and families including the rapidly growing need for pediatric and adolescent therapy, an expanded emergency shelter, supportive early education services, and additional access to high-quality early childhood education.

To expand these services, CSI will nearly double its physical building space centrally located at 45th and Dodge St. This two-year project will allow for an on-site mental health clinic to be added to the facility, a newly built emergency shelter housing 16 beds for youth, four additional early childhood education classrooms with a STEAM classroom, and innovative treatment childcare classrooms added within its early childhood education center to address the needs of preschoolers unable to attend traditional school environments.

Additionally, the need for high-quality early childhood education continues to outpace the availability on a national, state, and local level. Locally, families often experience a nine-month wait, or even longer, in order to gain access to a childcare facility. The proposed expansion of CSI’s early childhood education center would increase its licensed capacity by 25%, enabling more Omaha families to receive high-quality early childhood education services and prepare more kids for kindergarten.

The Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska (BIA-NE) is excited to announce its receipt of a $100,000 program sponsorship from Healthy Blue Nebraska (HBN) to implement brain injury screening, education, and management processes as part of a collaborative project with the Douglas County Youth Center (DCYC). To celebrate the funding of this program, HBN will be holding a check presentation ceremony at Healthy Blue’s Welcome Room at 2910 K St. STE E on January 11 at 3:30 p.m. Brain injury is often an undiagnosed or misdiagnosed condition in behavioral health. Those who report a history of brain injury will also have longer and more severe histories of substance use and more behavioral health issues. Because brain injury is often an invisible disability, it is easy to miss and misunderstand. One facet of this project is to bring brain injury training and awareness to the DCYC Behavioral Health Initiative, which is intended to increase access to behavioral health services and improve outcomes of justice-involved youth. The BIA-NE will accomplish this by providing brain injury training and mentoring for DCYC staff, multidisciplinary treatment team members, and community-based providers working with justice-involved youth. The Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska was founded in 2009 to create better futures for all Nebraskans through brain injury prevention, education, advocacy, and support. At Ease USA (AEU) is now offering Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) classes to service members and veterans. The group runs from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings February 21 through May 9, 2023 at the At Ease USA office, 10605 Burt Circle in Omaha.

DBT lends itself very well to treating traumatic stress-related disorders including PTSD. Participants will learn how to improve relationships, reduce emotional suffering, manage anxiety, and rediscover hope for the future. For 12 weeks, participants will join a close-knit group of individuals who will provide encouragement and accountability. The class is limited to twelve participants and each person receives a free workbook.

In addition to DBT classes, the Vets4Vets program offers peer support groups on Monday evenings from 6 – 7 p.m. These groups are open to all active duty and veterans and are on a drop-in basis. There is no charge to participate.

AngelsAmong us Celebrates Successful First Year of emotionalSupport programming

Angels Among Us launched 11 new emotional support programs in 2022 for pediatric cancer families living in or being treated in Nebraska. These exciting new programs provided opportunities for families to meet other families fighting pediatric cancer as well as provide some much-needed emotional support during a very difficult journey.

These events were available to each member of the family and provided support not only to pediatric cancer fighters and survivors, but also to families who have lost a child to cancer. In all, these emotional support programs touched a total of 520 individuals through 32 different events throughout 2022. The new programming was also supported by over 430 volunteer hours throughout the year.

The Community Foundation for Western Iowa is delighted to announce this year’s participants for “Make It Happen” – the Foundation’s exclusive 18-month training program sponsored by D.A. Davidson.

After a competitive application process, nine organizations were selected for the 2023 cohort: Avenue Scholars of Southwest Iowa; Charles E. Lakin Human Services Campus; Habitat for Humanity of Council Bluffs; Historical Society of Pottawattamie County; Learning for All; Lewis Central Education Foundation; New Visions Homeless Services; Southwest Iowa Families, Inc.; and Wings of Hope.

“Make It Happen” is a learning cohort designed to support nonprofit partners by increasing their ability to put a comprehensive plan in place that focuses on the benefits of a strong, endowed funding stream. The training program not only helps ensure long-term viability and strength of our region’s nonprofit organizations through fund development, but also strives to create a widespread culture of philanthropy throughout the Community Foundation’s western Iowa service area. The program consists of six monthly meetings from January to June, and then moves to quarterly “Continuing to Make It Happen” sessions.

Humanities Nebraska (HN) has announced a special round of its letter-exchange program, “Dear Stranger.” Originally conceived by Oregon Humanities, “Dear Stranger” connects people from all over the state by inviting Nebraskans to write a letter to someone they’ve never met.

The premise is simple: write a letter, get a letter, and make a new connection. Humanities Nebraska will match each letter received with a counterpart from a different part of the state.

For letter writers who are interested, HN has offered the following prompt for this round of letters, which must be postmarked by February 15, 2023. Participants are encouraged to address the theme in any way they choose:

Write about a local or national public event from the last 50 years – a celebration, anniversary, or gathering that occurred between 1972 and 2022 – that was personally meaningful to you.

Share how that experience felt, why you hold onto it, and how it affected you. Letters can be as short or long as a writer likes (even a postcard) and can take any form and include any enclosures that will fit in a first-class envelope. Participants should send their letters to Humanities Nebraska along with a signed participation form, available online at humanitiesnebraska.org. Boys town introduces groundbreaking opM Systemat institute for human neuroscience

Boys Town’s Institute for Human Neuroscience is revolutionizing child brain research with the recently installed brain imaging technology known as OPM, which stands for optically-pumped magnetometry. OPM research will include the emergence of psychiatric conditions during the earliest stages of life, brain function as infants become aware of their environment in real-time, how environmental toxins affect the brain at the earliest stages of life, and so much more.

The new system at Boys Town has 128 sensors, which means that it is the most precise OPM system in North America and one of only two such systems in the world.

The Institute for Human Neuroscience can configure these sensors using custom helmets and other designs that can be individually fit to any surface, including the head of infants, and can be used to map brain function as the person moves.

Using the OPM, Boys Town neuroscientists can now map developmental milestones in the brains of infants. Specifically, being able to see how senses like touch, sight, and sound develop from the earliest stages of life. Scientists can also watch how the brain changes as children learn to control their movements or to recognize the face of their mother.

“Boys Town National Research Hospital is the only place in the United States to have this cutting edge technology,” says Dr. Tony Wilson. “We are very excited about the impact that this technology will have on improving the lives of children and families in Nebraska and around the world.”

Hearts that Heal Donation Drive to Benefit StephenCenter

With the help of community partners, Stephen Center is celebrating Valentine’s Day by encouraging the public to show some love to the homeless through the Hearts that Heal donation drive. The event will be held February 6-17.

“Stephen Center relies on donations of hygiene items, coffee, cereal and more to care for hundreds of people on our campus every day,” Executive Director Michael Wehling said. “Winter is usually a slower time for donations, so we can use all the support we can get.”

Outlook Enrichment, an offshoot of the Omaha-based nonprofit Outlook Nebraska, has been hosting weekly soap-making workshops that have had an amazing turnout. Outlook Enrichment provides rehabilitation and social services for people who are blind or visually impaired. The Enrichment arm of the organization seeks to provide classes and activities to foster creativity and teach new skills, such as an audio book club, classes on adaptive technology, downhill skiing, jewelry making, cooking, and gardening. The soap- and candle-making workshop is one of the organization’s most popular offerings. This past workshop, participants gathered in a recreation room at the Outlook office to customize their own soaps, candles, lotions, lip balms, and perfumes.

Outlook Enrichment is a nonprofit that provides resources and support to those with vision loss so they can remain independent. The Enrichment team assesses all factors in a person’s life to determine possible beneficial services. Through a holistic approach, they examine their consumers through many lenses, including the type and onset of vision loss, skill sets, family dynamics, culture, and much more. This approach helps them ensure that their participants are capable and prepared for every aspect of life. The American Red Cross is teaming up with Pro Football Hall of Famer and blood donor Peyton Manning to encourage the public to come together this January to help patients in need of lifesaving blood products. The start of the New Year is one of the most challenging times to collect blood products with icy winter weather and severe seasonal illness often causing donors to postpone giving.

Record-setting winter weather has canceled hundreds of blood drives in the last few weeks, forcing more than 10,000 lifesaving units of blood and platelets to go uncollected.

Just as Peyton Manning did for nearly 20 years on the football field, he is leading by example by rolling up his sleeve to help patients and asking others to do the same.

Unlike other treatments, blood cannot be stockpiled or manufactured—it can only come from volunteer blood donors. Blood products are not only vital in saving patients’ lives but instrumental in supporting other treatments like chemotherapy.

In fact, every minute about six blood products are needed to help someone going through cancer treatment. This is in part because chemotherapy and radiation, used to treat cancer, can damage the body’s ability to generate healthy blood cells and cause potentially life-threatening conditions. Blood and platelet transfusions from generous donors help to provide patients with critical clotting factors, proteins and antibodies needed to help their bodies fight back.

Don’t wait until something in your building gets worn out, breaks, or springs a leak – stay ahead of the trouble by performing routine building maintenance. It’s important to be proactive for several reasons. First, a well maintained building will retain the value of the property. Second, it will be more pleasing to the eye, which can attract and keep both employees and customers. Finally, it is financially beneficial and can save you money in the long run by avoiding expensive replacements. According to global commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield, running your equipment to the point of failure can cost up to ten times the price of a good maintenance program.

In order to have a successful business, you must have a building that is in good working condition, so we went straight to the experts at Lifetime Stone Restoration to learn more about how you can stay on top of your building’s stone maintenance.

Make it Shine

Lifetime Stone restoration refinishes all stone such as marble, terrazzo, travertine, and limestone. They can remove daily wear and tear along with repairing cracks and holes in the stone.

There are many habits that can prevent or reduce the risk of cavities as they get older. You can start at birth by cleaning your baby’s gums after feeding by using a moistened washcloth to gently massage their gum tissues.

The dentist will also look for signs of enamel hypoplasia, which is when the protective layer of enamel on your child’s teeth doesn’t form correctly. It has a number of causes, including premature birth, vitamin deficiencies, and Celiac disease. They will also look for sores in your child’s mouth, which can be the result of ulcers, cold sores, or a sign of an infection like oral thrush. Additionally, pediatric dentists will determine if your child is getting enough fluoride, which plays an essential role in fighting decay and developing strong, healthy teeth, and may suggest supplements.

One year to Three years

As your child’s baby teeth erupt, their pediatric dentist will continue to pay close attention to the development and health of their baby teeth. They will evaluate the impact of your child’s habits, like sucking on a thumb or pacifier, keep a sharp eye out for decay or sores in your child’s mouth, and take steps to quickly resolve any issues that may appear. The dentist may also recommend that your child gets fluoride treatments, which can provide added protection against decay for children between the ages of six months and 16-years-old.

Three years to Seven years

All of your child’s baby teeth should be in by the time they reach three years old. If your child loses a baby tooth too early or never developed a tooth in one area of their mouth, their dentist might suggest placing a space maintainer in their mouth. Space maintainers keep baby teeth from shifting around and help their adult teeth erupt in the correct place. Children lose their first baby tooth around the age of five or six, so this is also the age

that your child will likely get their first dental x-ray. This helps the dentist make sure that your child’s adult teeth are developing properly in their jaw and reveals areas of decay that may not be visible to the naked eye.

Seven years to Ten years

When you were a kid, you likely didn’t visit an orthodontist until you were about 13 years old, but nowadays the ideal age for children to come in for an orthodontic consultation is seven. By this age, your child has enough permanent teeth to allow pediatric dentists to predict, and pre-emptively treat, dental issues such as overcrowding and misaligned bites. Every child’s teeth develop at a slightly different rate, but most children are ready for traditional orthodontic treatment between the ages of 10 and 14—when they have all or most of their adult teeth. If your child needs orthodontic treatment, you can work together to choose from treatment options like traditional braces or clear aligners. A straight, even smile will increase your teen’s confidence and make their teeth easier to clean, decreasing their risk of tooth decay or gum disease.

14 years to 18 years

Teens face increased risks of tooth decay and gum disease for many reasons, including a lack of commitment to dental hygiene, fluctuating hormones, and habits like smoking. Additionally, as sports become more competitive, they’re more likely to suffer an injury to their teeth. Their dentist will examine their mouth carefully for signs of decay, gum disease, and cracked or chipped teeth. They’ll also use x-rays to periodically check on the development of your child’s wisdom teeth, which often cause pain as they begin to erupt and usually need to be removed between the ages of 17 and 25. Dentists will make sure your teen’s wisdom teeth aren’t impacted, damaging other molars, or causing any pain, and they’ll determine when your child’s wisdom teeth should be removed.
