We have just marked the end of our first year in business and things are going according to plan. Cecil Wright has experienced both a very healthy charter season and the sale of the 55.5m Issana. It was a good time to take on one more team member, Liz Cox, who recently started and is helping across the board. This is not the beginning of a major expansion, however. Our success undoubtedly lies with the fact that we are small and focused – which is exactly how we intend to remain. The market is clearly picking up and the demand for new yachts of quality is beginning to outstrip supply. It’s fortuitous that this coincides with the widening of the Dutch locks, an event that Dick van Lent – chairman of the prestigious Royal van Lent shipyard – discusses in this issue. Feadship – the Royal van Lent cooperative shipyard venture with Royal De Vries and De Voogt Naval Architects – is already the market leader and now they have dramatically increased the capacity of what they can produce. Cecil Wright will be based on the 43.9m Silver Dream at the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show. Do call or email us for an invitation – we look forward to welcoming you.

SOLEMATES’ guests can control not just the music, but the lighting, climate systems and blinds via their own iPads. And her crew: in the 3 years they have worked together, they have really perfected their art. She carries an array of toys including golf clubs with tee box and biodegradable balls. This winter in the Caribbean we can offer her at 25% less than her high season rate in the Med. Perfect for 6 couples. Contact us to arrange a viewing – she will sit at anchor during the Monaco Yacht Show.

SIREN Length 73.5m / 241ft Beam 12.6m / 41ft Year 2008 Builder Nobiskrug Designer Newcruise Guests 12 Crew 17 Cruising Speed 14.5 knots Features Gym, beach club, cinema on deck and inside, helipad, elevator Cruising Area Caribbean & Mediterranean Rate From ¤476,000 per week This beautifully-streamlined 73.5m Nobiskrug is the embodiment of modern yachting. Her owners designed her with open-air living in mind; the owner’s cabin incorporates a fold-down terrace, and throughout the yacht there is a seamless flow between the inside and outside spaces. Vast, uncluttered decks give the look of a giant “sportser” and whilst she is capable of 17 knots, this is a big volume yacht with a sense of space and light permeating throughout. On deck her unique “touch and go” helipad can be folded into a sunbathing platform. Water-lovers will enjoy the beach club bar and lounge, which open onto an oversized swim platform.

BELLE AIMÉE Length 52.3m / 171ft Beam 9m / 29ft Builder Amels Year 2010 Designer Tim Heywood Guests 10 Crew 13 Cruising Speed 13 knots Features Exercise equipment, deck Jacuzzi, Hinckley Jet Tender, scuba diving centre Cruising Area Papua New Guinea, Burma, Thailand Rate $265,000 per week This 52.3m Amels has been off the beaten tracks since her delivery in 2010, and is perfect for those wishing to go “off radar” in total, self-sufficient luxury. Her chef, who worked with Rick Stein and at London’s trendy “Fishworks”, has the ability to turn the humblest catch into something inspired. This winter, BELLE AIMÉE will grace the shores of Thailand before discovering the more elusive waters of Papua New Guinea and Burma.

A handful of these compact expedition yachts have made it on to the charter market such as this 24m Kingship, which combines the seaworthiness and fuel efficiency of a tug with the chic interior, big swim platform, spacious sun deck and bathrooms you’d expect on a 35 metre yacht.

SYCARA V Length 68.16m / 224ft Beam 12.52m / 41ft Year 2010 Builder Nobiskrug Designer Nobiskrug Guests 12 Crew 18 Cruising Speed 14.5 knots Features Deck Jacuzzi, elevator, gym, massage room, beach club Cruising Area Caribbean & Mediterranean. RATE ¤585,000 per week The yacht has been designed with total flexibility in mind, making her ideal for charter. Practically-speaking this means things like a coffee table which converts into a 12 seat dining table; sun chairs which can be configured in any direction; drop down TVs which rotate so they can be viewed from any direction; formal dining which can be partitioned off for privacy, opened up in the direction of the bar area or aft deck, or both. The master suite is exceptional, opening forward onto a private observation deck where its occupants can enjoy a peaceful breakfast. Not offered for charter to US residents while in US waters.

Her beach club is located amidships on the starboard side, so guests aren’t bothered by the toing and froing of tenders and jetskis. On the port side there is another “club”; this one with a shaded bar and a further side opening where guests can lounge – that is, if they are tired of the other 10 distinct guest areas on deck. The lower deck also features a proper cinema with reclining chairs which vibrate to the soundtrack, a candy store and beanbags; this yacht is youthful, fun, and clever.

In Skyfall, Bond and Severine brooded on the foredeck of this modern-classic schooner which can be chartered throughout the Aegean. She has attracted a loyal charter following, the food onboard gaining particular recognition – the galley turns out delicious international fare as well as the tasty “Meze” you would expect on a super-sized Gulet. With temperatures in the Dodecanese remaining at around 28 degrees in October, she’s perfect for a short haul getaway over October half term, and we can offer greatly reduced rates at that time of year.

Many things set MARTHA ANN apart, not least the observation lounge that converts to a cinema, her Gatsby-esque interior and the sense of space (headroom is 7’ 6” throughout). With no less than 7 bars including a sports bar and Jacuzzi bar with swim-up stools, this is a superb yacht for entertaining. 8 stewardesses look after 12 guests, ensuring an extreme level of pampering! Not offered for charter to US residents while in US waters.

CLASSICFEADSHIPS “Fans of old style yachting love these classic gems; four ladies which never seem to age. They make perfect support vessels for sailing regattas and their large sun decks are a stylish venue for special events”.

What had been just a sandblasted hull and a pair of engines was transformed at Feadship into a model of low carbon and space-efficiency. She has been rebuilt to such a high specification and even has a transparent floor panel in the saloon to show off the sparkling engine room below; this is one for the boys.

Rate From ¤385,000 per week

We’re not entirely comfortable with this fact – but yachts built in the eighties are broadly considered “classics”. CHARISMA underwent a huge refit several years ago and retains a “gentleman’ club” feel. Her fun, 12-strong crew work intuitively, a skill garnered through years of combined experience. She’ll winter in the Caribbean once again, where guests can loll under the huge new sun awning, and with new exhausts and generators, she’s running as quietly as a mouse.

CORPERFORMANCE It’s easy to feel bombarded by fashionable diets and exercise rituals – and hard to find a voice of authority amid the noise. Corperformance is the brainchild of two qualified doctors, Fred Wadsworth & Adam Carey. They conceived of a sensible programme with a medically tailored approach at its core that demystifies wellness and produces truly effective results.

6

‘When the owner of Hampshire II introduced me to Fred and Adam I was an unhealthy 35 year old who weighed 89 kilos’ admits Chris Cecil-Wright, ‘but after 3 months on their programme I weighed 73 kilos, and still do 6 years later.’ Corperformance personally educated Chris on nutrition and exercise, with what he calls a basic understanding of biology: ‘what they teach, sticks. I’m a true believer. I’m as fit now as when I left Sandhurst; in fact, I’ve walked to both the North and South Poles with Fred.’

WINNING FORMULA Fred and Adam have worked extensively with top teams in British football, rugby and cricket, as well as with gold medallist Olympians such as rower James Cracknell. ‘We then took our revolutionary approach to elite performance in the sporting field and put it in the boardroom,’ explains Fred, ‘working with groups of clients from big banks and leading companies.’ The parallels between professional sport and the corporate environment – the pressure, long hours and demand for intense productivity – were instantly recognizable to the Corperformance team, ‘We understand corporate lifestyle and deliver a proactive outcome with a high level of supervision.’

RFORMANCEcontrol

Fred and Chris on their South Pole trek

THE WAY FORWARD Corperformance has recently launched a one-on-one client support system called Vitalis. Expert clinical coaching is delivered at the client’s convenience over the first six months, in which time, Fred insists, the programme will drive long-lasting behavioural change. ‘We come to you to do a detailed medical assessment which is followed by the educational component’ says Fred, ‘we ask where you are now, where you are going and if you are in control of your journey.’ The powerful combination of tailored advice, the development of ‘personalized resilience strategies’ and an approach to managing lifestyle and activity time can be life-changing: ‘A client in his 60’s who is a founder and former chairman of a FTSE100 tech company tells us he is sleeping better, is beating his tennis coach and is skiing more days a year than he has ever been able to before.’

THE BOTTOM LINE If life is more demanding than your body’s resources will allow, poor health and disease could lie in that deficit. ‘80% of people think they’re eating well and they’re not,’ say Fred, ‘and we now know that insulin is the hub of all western lifestyle diseases. We’re not selling life insurance and just stopping you from getting diabetes later, you will feel so much better now. You will recover your work life balance – because we will give you the compass and the map.’

“We coach the change that you think you can’t achieve" Dr Fred Wadsworth, Co-founder, Corperformance.

THE MARKET Sales figures from the six months to July 31st show that the large yacht sales market recovery is strengthening.

Indeed, you're now likely to find waiting periods – up to seven years – for any new builds at the top yards.

This year 141 new yachts have been offered for sale, in the same six months last year the number was pretty similar at 146. The interesting part is that the number of yachts sold in the period this year was 204 compared to 144 last year – an increase of almost 41%. This is substantial annual growth which becomes even clearer when we look at the 108 sales in the same period in 2012. The strength of recovery can then be measured at an impressive 89%.

It isn’t just the number of yachts being sold that is on the increase – the size and price is also on the way up. The most notable three sales of the last 6 months by length have been:

If we break down the above figures a little further they reveal another significant trend towards quality. The four main geographical centres are Northern Europe, Southern Europe, America and the Rest of the World. It’s generally accepted that Northern Europe produces a quality unrivalled anywhere else and it is from Northern European builders that there seems to be increased demand.

And by price:

1) Luna – 115.00m, 2009, Lloyds Werft 2) Nero – 90.10m, 2008, Corsair Yachts 3) Quatroelle – 86.11m, 2013, Lurssen

1) Luna 2) Quatroelle 3) Ecstasea – 85.95m, 2004, Feadship

Whilst there is still an oversupply in the market it is becoming clear that there is a ‘flight to quality’.

A Rising Tiger As far as client demographics are concerned there has been no real shift and, perhaps surprisingly, the recent sanctions against Russian citizens haven't altered the market. There could be big changes on the horizon, however. In October there is reportedly going to be a relaxation in the restriction the People’s Republic of China imposes on its citizens (including foreign residents) concerning their ability to purchase high value assets abroad. Whilst I do not believe this will have an immediate effect on the market, in the coming years we will undoubtedly see the industry impacted by China's enormous wealth. The Feadship Market There have been 13 Feadship sales in the last 6 months, the most recent being the 65m, 2010, PESTIFER (asking EUR 69,750,000) and the 62m, 2005, RASSELAS (asking USD 57,500,000). Of what we consider to be the 10 best recent Feadships on the market, 7 have now been sold. There were 49 Feadships on the market when the last newsletter was published, this figure has now dropped to 33. My previous Broker News stated that 12 of these were built post-2000 and 6 were post-2005. Currently those numbers have reduced to 4 built post-2000 and just 2 post-2005.

These Feadships are: OCEAN VICTORY GALLANT LADY DÉJÀ VU KATRION

It takes an experienced eye to create an atmosphere on a yacht that exudes personality, comfort and impact. Chris Cecil-Wright looks to Tom Craig of Tixall House for exquisite art and collectibles that transcend both time and fashion.

“ Great art should work immediately. It should be love at first sight." Tom Craig, Tixall House

Truly beautiful objects – be it a silver Fabergé box, a contemporary chair or a Helmut Newton photographic print – can have a profoundly seductive effect on the psyche. ‘There’s more to yachting than just the boat,’ says Chris, ‘family, art, photography, film – they are all in close periphery and vitally important’. Chris’s good friend Tom Craig works with clients from all over the world – both on land and at sea – with a bespoke approach that is highly effective: ‘When we took it upon ourselves to hang art on Issana for the Monaco Yacht Show last year, I watched Tom completely revolutionize the yacht’. CREATING DRAMA What worked like a charm on Issana was a series of 1960’s photographs of St Tropez. The trend for contemporary art on boats is understandable given the modern aesthetic of many of the boats themselves. However, Tom emphasizes that the work must complement the light and landscape – and that the framing is crucial: ‘You have a captive audience on a yacht,’ he explains, ‘family, friends and owners have time to admire the objects, particularly at night when the light goes and the theatre of art starts.’ PERSONAL TOUCH New buyers have buoyed the powerful growth of the art market since 2004, but not all clients have a penchant, knowledge or taste for art. Tixall House helps collectors negotiate the complex art world – both contemporary and antique – and avoid its pitfalls: ‘One can be impulsive and buy like it’s a retail experience’ says Tom, ‘but I encourage clients to think proactively in order to experience and improve their collection over decades.’

“ Charming, hospitable, immaculately dressed and with a welcoming smile: when I entered the industry I wanted to meet Dick van Lent, now we have become friends and do business together. Royal van Lent continues to push the boundaries of possibilities in the world of yachting." Chris Cecil -Wright

It may be an acronym for First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders, but Feadship also stands for the two eminent figureheads who lead the team behind it: Dick van Lent and Henk De Vries. We spoke to Dick van Lent about the past and future of his own prestigious shipyard facility – Royal van Lent – and the rise and rise of Feadship.

What are the qualities that you believe set Feadship apart from other Northern European yards? Dick van Lent (DvL): Our company, Royal Van Lent, is 170 years old. We’ve seen a number of crises, and what we’ve seen after a crisis is that the best yards – the 8 of us – remain. The reason is that particularly in a down period people look more for reputation and financial stability – it’s important that the yacht completes and delivers with no problems in year three. Also, we don’t cut corners. Feadship are quality driven, relationship driven and service driven. Which yacht from the van Lent shipyard has represented the biggest leap forward in terms of technology and innovation? DvL: Ecstasea created quite a bit of weight – this was a yacht that did 32 knots at 41,000 horsepower with 4 diesel engines and one turbine. There were strict requirements regarding noise and vibration, but in 2004 it was delivered on time, on budget and met all the technological criteria. We’re now producing a 101m yacht (to be delivered in Spring 2015) that is the first yacht in the industry that will meet the passenger code criteria (for cruise ships). It’s not so easy on a yacht when we need the finest in finish and luxury. There are 60 different types of wood on the

16

How does the Feadship partnership work?

With the recent widening of the locks – in addition to facilities like Feadship’s Makkum yard – is there a limit to what can be achieved?

DvL: We (van Lent and De Vries) are equal shareholders in Feadship and use the same designer – De Voogt – that both our families own. You’re ensured the same standard of design, engineering and quality at both our yards and we are involved jointly in the innovations.

DvL: It doesn’t look like there is any limit in the yachting industry. Every decade the size grows by 10m and in volume it becomes enormous. Particular owners want to achieve particular spaces and do more world cruising beyond the Mediterranean. These yachts are now like mini to medium sized cruise ships.

How have you had to expand the Feadship yards in order to accommodate the growing appetite for increasingly large yachts?

Have you had to adjust your pricing policy over the last 7 years?

boat that all need to be fire retardant while maintaining the character of the materials.

DvL: We have renewed the slipway, widened the opening of the dry docks to accommodate the beam and enlarged the opening of two nearby bridges. These were governmental projects but we requested them. Last week we had the opening ceremony of the (widened) lock and it now allows just over 100m in length by 14m beam and 3500 tons.

DvL: Our pricing is simple – it’s an accumulation of equipment and man-hours. If those lower because of fierce competition between suppliers and contractors, then those prices are reflected in our quotation. It’s a constant process to work more efficiently in the good times but even more so in an economic downturn.

Any future trends or wishes you can envisage? DvL: We’ve had lots of special wishes over the years – hospital equipment and helipads, a crow’s nest, karaoke room and underwater observation windows, for example. We’re special in that it’s a team effort with the owner, so if they enjoy the creativity we can supply it. What is your order book looking like? DvL: At Royal van Lent we have 5 boats under construction between 55m and 101m and we will have time for a new build in 2017. At Feadship we always have 10 boats under construction. We have a good pipeline – the next one is always on the drawing board.

THE AEOLIAN ISLANDS For more information contact the Charter Team on charter@cecilwright.com or call +44 20 7408 1001 +377 97 98 76 60

The seven islands and various islets that make up the Aeolian Archipelago have always remained rather “off the chart”, but in recent years large yachts have been dropping anchor in ever-increasing numbers. The Aeolians have quietly been evolving as an enclave for those escaping the parties, invitations and formalities of elsewhere in favour of an effortless, bohemian kind of chic.

The Aeolians became a world heritage site in 2000, so a superyacht marina is off the cards. Steep, unforgiving terrain has kept development to a minimum, and – apart from the addition of water and electricity in the eighties – little has changed. This has nurtured a laid-back, hippy-intellectual scene where a powerful sense of nature exists. Add to this the great food and wine available, and these islands become even more alluring.

20

Most choose to arrive by helicopter from Sicily, which can be a high-octane experience. Slaloming between island peaks and hanging in the sulphur-filled air over Stromboli’s crater will no doubt draw gasps and get hearts racing. Consider re-establishing serenity by touching down on the manicured lawn of Capofaro Malvaisa Resort where you can pop in for an open-air massage with Mount Etna brooding in the distance.

The resort is located on Salina Island, a superb central starting point from which to explore the Aeolians (the neighbouring islands lying no more than a couple of hours away in each direction). Salina’s whitewashed buildings and flat, pink roofs are distinctly Aeolian, and so too are the rustic restaurants which serve the simplest, most delicious food. The island is also home to ‘Il Postino’ beach, famed as the setting for that movie’s most poignant moments. The wild and wonderful island of Filicudi lies to the southeast of Salina; here, you can circumnavigate the island, swim the grottos and head ashore to what’s known as the “Yachting Club”. This easy-going restaurant serves the freshest “crudi di pesca” and fantastic wines. Its tables are perched on decking suspended over the sea, and in the evening this is the perfect spot to enjoy cocktails and music under the stars. At Stromboli you can hike up the volcano – it’s worth the climb because you get to run down afterwards which is rather like moonwalking. Potter around the island’s village, which has developed an eclectic, bohemian scene of its own, then back onboard at sunset you can whoop and toast the volcano’s explosions. The deckhands, meanwhile, will be praying you don’t choose to spend the night here – it’s likely the yacht will be covered in ash by morning.

Look out for Panarea’s rocky hillsides, which are softened by wild caper bushes, violets, vines and hibiscus. The south is uninhabited, and this is the best place to swim. You can go ashore for coffee or an icy Granita, or just loll near the dark golden beach of Zimmari for a few hours. By sundown Panarea comes into it’s own: the simple, beachy and understated atmosphere found at Hotel Raya, Bridge and Bar Del Porto is reminiscent of St Tropez in its heyday. The owner of Raya has gone to some lengths to maintain the modest 2-star hotel rating, knowing that simplicity and consistency are what define this place. In short, the Aeolians make you feel closer to the sea, closer to nature and allow you time to think and breathe. Here, the adage that ‘less is more’ is perfectly apt.

THE MARKET The Monaco Yacht Show is the starting block of the selling season. As the industry continues to pick up pace, we look at who is leading the charge.

The logjam is freed. Sellers seem to be more accepting of the ‘reset’ in yacht values and buyers have fresh confidence. It comes as no surprise that we have seen the Americans leading the resurgence of buyers. Of course, quality second hand yachts have been the first to sell, and Feadships have been at the forefront of this demand. Historically Feadship have sold half of their production to the US and this trend continues. There are still one or two second hand favourites but the real story is in New Build potential. OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS I always look forward to the Monaco Yacht Show as it concentrates the mind. I don’t have any preconceived ideas before it begins. Listings emerge just before the show, a few catch my eye and our team immediately begins to analyse them. A raft of information suddenly comes through and we focus on finding the most attractive deal, the real opportunity. It’s likely that out of 10 boats only one will be a gem. If you’re coming to the yacht show, we will help you evaluate which one it is.

Henry Smith has a finger firmly on the pulse of the world’s yacht sales market – he appraises news, data and trends, ensuring the client is always one step ahead.

Since joining Cecil Wright at it’s inception, Henry has proven to be a natural broker with great potential for future success: ‘Henry has a powerful combination of integrity and motivation – traits that I now recognize allowed me to achieve what I have in my career’ explains Chris, ‘And crucially, he’ll only give his opinion after thorough research.’ Based in Monaco, Henry’s on the dock, at the shipyard or on a plane – constantly gathering key information to deliver expert service to his clients.

STRIDING AHEAD By virtue of the unique technology they utilize, Cecil Wright has negated the need for a back office and can be exceptionally efficient. ‘We have a fresher, 21st century approach to yachting’ explains Henry, ‘We can do things in 3 – 4 minutes that take other brokers 3 – 4 days. There are no slow links at Cecil Wright.’ That’s especially true of Henry and his motorbike in Monaco: he can whizz past traffic and never be late for an appointment.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE ‘There’s no point inundating a client with everything that’s on the market’ says Henry, ‘I listen and learn from what they’ve owned or chartered before and then specifically tailor their request.’ His resulting short list will read like the client’s dream team. Henry’s most valued information sources? The morning’s market data, the Cecil Wright Intelligence System software – ‘and good old-fashioned memory’ he quips.
