your ne x t step

your next step to academic success

For many of you, the journey of education doesn’t end at graduation: the possibility of a top-up and then a full degree is the cherry on top of all your hard work. However, knowing which universities offer the top-up 3rd year option can be a daunting bit of research — so we’ve given you a head-start by listing courses and universities that are available to you. Many previous graduates have gone on to study at the universities listed and given us great feedback about their time there. All universities listed refer to campuses in London.

London Metropolitan Universit y London Met focuses on employability and creates a stimulating environment for its students. If you’re thinking about top-ups in healthcare, business, and technology, this is a university to consider. Courses offered include the BSc Health and Social Care, BSc Health and Social Policy, BSc Health and Community Development, and BSc Public Health and Health Promotion. If your interest lies in technology, consider a BSc in International Business Management or the BSc Computer Systems.

Northumbria Universit y Northumbria prides itself on providing students with opportunities for growth and learning from the best, as well as its partnerships and outstanding facilities. With campuses in the north and in London, you’ll be sure to receive exemplary guidance and teaching. For technology students, a BSc in Computer Systems and Networking is available.

London Southbank Universit y With a continuous focus on vocational education and professional opportunities for its students, London Southbank is one of London’s most popular universities. Thank you for taking part in the National Student Survey! After many months of planning, preparation, promotional activities, and email reminders, the National Student Survey (NSS) has closed for the year. This was a great step forward for us, as we moved away from our internal Student Experience Survey and embraced a long-standing national survey. Over 350 institutions take part in the NSS, and now we are one of them! Although the NSS is a government requirement for universities and colleges, this was also an amazing opportunity to have your views heard alongside the general student population, making you part of a much greater student voice with a bigger impact on how education is delivered. Your feedback is important and will be used to:

We’re always thinking of ways we can engage with and inspire you, both in and out of class. This is how we came up with the exciting concept that is Wednesdays @ The Auditorium! Launched this spring term, the series is the brain child of Head of Technology Malcolm Thompson, assisted by various departments. The main purpose for the initiative, which is a series of presentations and workshops, is to provide students with an interactive and engaging space where a wide range of topics can be discussed. The atmosphere is light but stimulating. The feedback from students is that this type of setting helps them to be more open to participating in the sessions. In case you missed last term’s presentations, here’s a quick round up:

• Play a vital role in shaping the future of the student experience at St Patrick’s; • Help prospective students to make informed decisions when choosing their course; • Create action plans to address areas that are in need of improvement.

Career Opportunities — The first presentation of the series, students were given a taster of what lies ahead in terms of their career prospects. The advice covered creating a good CV, the application process, how to prepare for interviews, and how to present yourself to your potential employer. Students were also asked to discuss their views on what makes a prepared job hunter.

We’re excited for what the future holds and how we can work with you and your feedback to improve the student experience. None of this would have been possible without all the 2nd year students who took part in the NSS. You added your voice to the survey, and by doing so you gave more value and weight to the overall feedback. Thank you for your opinions and for playing a crucial role in helping us achieve another big milestone for the student voice at St Patrick’s. Keep an eye out for further updates about the survey!

Meet the Student Council — For the students, by the students! This session focused on introducing the recently elected Student Council, giving everyone a chance to meet, talk, and understand what the Student Council has planned for their time in office. How to Communicate Effectively — Presented by the Student Experience Team, the focus of this session was how to use social media and other internet platforms to attract attention to a business, service, blog, or any other venture. The session was in line with our drive to encourage entrepreneurship, as we want to make sure you have all the tools you need to get noticed! The Organised Student — Presented by the DALE team (sometimes referred to as “essential skills”), the purpose of this session was to show students what skills they needed to be more organised. Those in attendance were introduced to the storyline productivity schedule, a tool anyone can use to improve their time management. With the growing popularity of the series, we hope that students will soon come forward with suggestions or even take part in presenting! This initiative is for you, so feel free to step up — get in touch with the Student Experience Team or email us at studentexperience@st-patricks.ac.uk. Look out for posters for the summer programme and make sure not to miss out! vibe magazine

summer of You o u r s t u d e n t s — pa s t, p r e s e n t a n d f u t u r e

At St Patrick’s, we are very proud of every single one of our students: that’s why we’re always trying to help you achieve your dreams. When you graduate and step a little closer to your goals, we are right there celebrating with you. However, in order to get to that amazing moment, make sure you keep yourself motivated and concentrate on the prize at the end of the journey.

This summer is a great time to practice keeping positive about yourself and what’s happening in your life; with the sun out, anything can seem possible! Take some time out to enjoy yourself and celebrate summer, especially if it means no more deadlines.

This summer is a great time to practice keeping positive about yourself and what’s happening in your life; with the sun out, anything can seem possible! Take some time out to enjoy yourself and celebrate summer, especially if it means no more deadlines.

There will be times when things get tough and you will feel like giving up; but you must remember that you deserve a better, happier life. Take special care not to take out your bad day on others, too: as much as we celebrate you and want you to celebrate yourself, it’s also important to celebrate each other. We are a community, and when one of us succeeds, it reflects well on the rest of us! In the same way, when one of us fails, we should all be there to support them. By making sure we’re all there for each other, we can help everyone to achieve their goals as well as creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed. 08

When you’re so close to the centre of London, there’s no excuse to not find something to do, even if it’s just sitting in one of the beautiful parks and enjoying the sunshine (and maybe an ice cream as well!). You might want to find some new hobbies, or return to old ones that have had to fall by the wayside; anything that makes you happy is worthwhile. Look into team sports in your area, take a night class to learn a new skill, or just reconnect with old friends.

Remember to celebrate yourself, your achievements, and your potential for the future — we certainly do. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us, and keep your chin up!

city, country & coastal getaways in England

With everyone talking about going on another holiday to Greece or Spain, it’s easy to forget that England has lots of holiday opportunities of its own to suit different hobbies and budgets. You can discover plenty of little gems all over South East and West England if you know where to look, so here’s a quick guide to some closer-to-home spots to visit!

Cambridge

With picturesque river views, stunning natural parks, and plenty of culture to discover, Cambridge is an ideal package for a short city break. Imposing medieval architecture accompanies the city’s youthful energy to create a unique atmosphere. The main streets and trendy cafés are buzzing with students and tourists, yet they never become overwhelming — it’s always easy to escape into another winding alley leading to a tranquil park. THINGS TO DO Walk along the river Cam — or take a boat! This one’s perfect for photography enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates a good view.

Explore Cambridge University colleges There are so many of them! Each has its own charm and an immaculate courtyard full of lush greenery that offsets the yellow bricked buildings. Among the most photogenic are Jesus College, Sidney Sussex College, Christ’s College and Trinity College. Check out Trinity Lane This historic street with a lot of character is one of the city’s signature sights. Go up St Mary’s church tower The climb is a little steep, but the view is worth it — you can see the entire city centre from here. It’s a perfect city panorama shot! Visit the Fitzwilliam Museum As “one of the greatest art collections of the nation and a monument of the first importance”, the museum houses a variety of exhibitions — from paintings by Rubens, Bonnard, and Matisse to a collection of autograph scores by Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Wagner. Take a break at Cambridge University Botanic Garden If you are a nature lover, you can get lost in here for a few hours. The garden is known for its diverse collection of flower displays and provides a peaceful retreat after exploring the buzzing city centre. vibe magazine

As the most western point of the UK, Cornwall has stunning sunset views. Whether it’s a terrace bar or a secluded beach, pick a cosy spot on a clear evening and enjoy a breath-taking sunset.

CAMBER SANDS

If you prefer a longer holiday and love the sea, Cornwall offers plenty of opportunities to make the most of the seaside as well as visit a few memorable attractions. Stay in the towns of St Ives, Newquay, Polperro or Padstow and explore the local sights. If you are travelling by car, it’s also worth going on day trips to other places of interest, such as The Eden Project, Tintagel, St Michael’s Mount, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, and the Minaak Theatre.

To experience the charm of English villages and enjoy sea views without having to drive for miles, look no further than East Sussex (two hours away from London by train). Stay in the village of Rye, only ten minutes away from the Camber Sands park where the glorious sandy beach can rival Cornwall and Devon. Rye has an abundance of historic buildings and is a perfect base from which to explore the area’s flora and fauna.

THINGS TO DO

THINGS TO DO

Get lost in St Ives Full of pastel-hued houses, St Ives offers a relaxing atmosphere with streets framed by cosy cafés, colourful boats anchored in the harbour, and a turquoise sea. Just beware of the seagulls!

Pop into the Mermaid Inn An old smugglers’ inn with plenty of character, this is a great spot for a drink with friends.

Enjoy Newquay Plan a lazy day out on Fistral beach, go horse riding, or visit the local zoo with the kids. If you surf — or would like to give it a go — you can rent wetsuits and surfboards at Newquay beach. Appreciate The Eden Project These futuristic domes house tropical and Mediterranean plants, and are a treat for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. They’re especially atmospheric during rain. Take a boat to St Michael’s Mount This iconic rocky island offers spectacular views of Mount’s Bay and hosts buildings dating from the 12th century. Watch the sun set over the sea As the most western point of the UK, Cornwall has stunning sunset views. Whether it’s a terrace bar or a secluded beach, pick a cosy spot on a clear evening and enjoy a breath-taking sunset. Eat ice cream! Try authentic Cornish ice cream from local cafés instead of opting for a safe option from the corner shop.

Photograph (almost) everything The view of the Mermaid Inn’s street is Insta-famous, so this is your chance to get that perfect snap. Taking photos during the ‘magic hour’ will make your shots look extra special. Go back in time With a mix of medieval and Tudor architecture, Rye has a few impressive looking sights that are definitely worth a visit, including Rye Castle, Ypres Tower Museum and Camber Castle. Climb the tower of the Parish Church of St Mary Gain a different perspective of the village and its surroundings with a panorama shot of the rustic rooftops. Travel to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve One of the most important conservation sites in Britain, Rye Harbour boasts amazing wildlife and bird watching opportunities. Unwind at Camber Sands On this part of the south coast a sandy beach is a rarity, so give yourself time to explore it. Despite its fantastic natural assets and a close proximity to London, Camber Sands remains largely unspoilt. vibe magazine

60 seconds w i t h Ya n n i e c k e J o h n s o n

Hello Yanniecke, how are you? Can you tell us a bit about what you’re studying at St Patrick’s and why ? I’m good thank you! I am studying a Health and Social Care Management HND. I believe God has allowed me this opportunity to study to highlight the gifts he has blessed me with and to start exercising my full potential and overstep self-doubt. What makes you have confidence in yourself? The fact that I am able to be myself and be bold enough to be talkative about my shortcomings and my dreams. I have conquered enough challenges; I’m not afraid of my regrets and wasted years. Being ready to push the boundaries and challenge the status quo. How do you make sure that you don’t lose confidence? I do have my shortfalls, but my first way of making sure I stay confident is holding fast to my faith. That is through prayer and meditation, speaking positively over myself continuously. Secondly, surrounding myself with a network of people who understand their worth and are not afraid to steer me in the right direction. Also, to make sure that I engage myself in community and voluntary services where appropriate to keep abreast with happenings. How important do you think it is to be self-confident? I believe it is important to be self-confident because it helps me to see a clearer picture of who I really am. It helps me to conquer my weaknesses and to subdue the fear of fearing to fail. 16

vibe magazine

Has being at St Patrick’s improved your confidence? Being at St Patrick’s has helped me to understand, through the strong team of lecturers and fellow students, that I am not below standard. The feedback through academic and peer support has boosted my self-confidence to another level. Moreover, being on the Student Council has really pushed me to the limit to challenge my own self-confidence, because I was very doubtful that I was able to meet the demands. Who would you say is your role model? I must say I haven’t got a specific role model. There are numerous people I have come across and who are in my circle that I desire to emulate. Personally, for me there are different people for different seasons. Without bias, this season my role models are: my junior brother Mr Winston Johnson Jr. (a forensic crime scene investigator), Miss Ijeoma Ukeni (PHD student at Huddersfield University), and Mrs Archana Arora (lecturer at St Patrick’s). What would you say to someone who is having doubts? Allow others to see the true you by facing your limitations and being humble enough to admit that you need direction. Do not wait for the perfectionist in you to stand out before you chase after your dreams; do this in your weakness and seek for support. As my primary school motto says: “When I play, I play hard; when I work I don’t play at all.” Always aim to be a high achiever — don’t let your contemporaries be your downfall.

Communication is a skill that drives everything in life, and is a key component to building personal and professional relationships. Every business requires effective communication to function properly, develop relationships with customers, and become successful. It can prevent disagreements and build trust and respect. So, what is effective communication? Here are two definitions: 1. ‘The glue that helps you deepen your connections to others and improve teamwork, decision making, and problem solving.’ 2. ‘A two way information sharing process which involves one party sending a message that is easily understood by the receiving party.’ Effective communication must be clearly delivered, received, and understood. There are many methods of doing this, so it is important to decide what is best for you and your brand, connecting you with your target audience. You should also ensure that whatever you are communicating with your audience is clear, concise, and genuine. The most frequently used forms of communication are: Face to face / Print adverts / Websites / Email / Posters / Social media / Television adverts / Flyers / Newsletter / Magazines Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become a hugely important factor in engaging and developing a relationship with potential consumers. Each platform has a different use, can be used to reach different target audiences, and

can deliver different messages about the same content. Knowing how to use each one properly is invaluable! Facebook Facebook encompasses the main features of Twitter and Instagram, as you are able to post statuses and upload photos. However, Facebook’s users tend to be more mature, and it is often used for conversation and discussion. For a business, it is a good platform to receive customer reviews and engage with your audience, making them feel more a part of your brand. Twitter Twitter was created to be a form of fast-paced communication, whether you are giving updates or sharing thoughts and ideas. The culture of Twitter is focused on what is happening in the moment. It is also a good platform for businesses to use to respond to customer feedback, queries, and complaints. Instagram Instagram has a much younger feel than Twitter and Facebook; as a result, you will tend to find a younger audience, as millennials are the predominant user of the platform. Unlike other popular social media sites, Instagram focuses on imagery supported by text. People update their followers on what they’ve been getting up to, share messages, and tell stories through photos. It’s a great way to share a new product. vibe magazine

The app comes with 10 free sessions to complete before you have to purchase it. Meditation is a way to remind ourselves to slow down and enjoy life. easily accessible can be very handy. Studies show that people who meditate everyday are more happy, positive, focused at work, and have better relationships. what to watch WONDER WOMAN

Celebrating women and subverting the gender stereotypes that typically plague Hollywood, director Patty Jenkins (best known for her debut feature Monster) has created a film full of motivation and positivity in Wonder Woman. After mixed reactions to DC’s previous offerings, including Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman, there is a lot resting on this film’s success for the franchise. Starring actress Gal Gadot as the titular heroine, Wonder Woman explores the origins of the Amazon princess, also known as Diana Prince. The stakes of this movie’s release are high, with Hollywood elites asking whether audiences will flock to see a superhero movie with a female lead. And the answer has been an overwhelming ‘yes’. In contrast to the other two big players in the DC universe, Batman and Superman, Wonder Woman is not dour and tortured by her actions. Instead, she is courageous and pure-hearted, and the movie shines because of this. Wonder Woman has been universally praised by critics and hailed as a breath of fresh air for the superhero genre.

Wonder Woman made her first appearance in DC Comics in 1941, but this is the first live action theatrical film dedicated
