the wealthy and eccentric George Valentine, one of the sons of the Iron Ore Industry of Bellefonte. George built this residence as a “retirement home.� According to those who still remember him, George was quite the character and individualist. He kept a horse and riding carriage which he loved to “roar� around the streets of Bellefonte when most people were driving cars. The construction of the house also reveals some of George’s “eccentricities,� such as the interior door and window molding that which is formed to look like wood but is actually made of steel, a commodity that would have not been easy to come by at the time of construction. George was also a recognized artist; one of his paintings is in the permanent collection at Centre County Historical Museum and Library on the corner of E. Howard and N. Allegheny streets. The house still remains a showcase of original art by Leeshaun’s parents, well recognized artists, whose works are housed in major collections throughout the United States and England. Leeshaun is a recognized pastel artist. Who knows, while touring this home this year, you may be greeted by the holiday-loving resident ghost, George Valentine!
The Ellis Orvis Home 140 E. Linn Street
Ellis Orvis bought three lots on E. Linn Street in 1887 and built a family home on the center lot in 1892. The home has been little altered to this day, although for a time it was divided into three apartments. The current owners bought it at auction in 2007 and began its restoration to the stately one-family home in April 2008, completing much of it by 2009. Highlights include a variety of notable wooden parquet floors, a Shunk’s kitchen especially designed to complement the period and style of the house, pocket doors, and lovely brown-toned tile floors, each with a flower motif, surrounding the living room fireplace.
