Monterey Depot Museum

Small Town Charm There are not many things more charming than a Southern, small town. Putnam County is home to three: Algood, Baxter and Monterey, each offering unique, authentic charm appealing to locals and travelers alike.

Baxter

Known in railroading days as “Mine Lick,” the tiny town of Baxter offers charm with both heritage and modern attraction. The history of the area is captured in the city’s replica train depot and visitors’ center. A hub for activity during festivals, cruise-ins and events, the depot is still the heart that keeps this destination feeling lively. Across from the depot, guests will find the flagship store of popular jewelry company, Lenny & Eva. Baxter also serves as home to DelMonaco Winery and Tennessee State Natural Area Window Cliffs.

Monterey

Known as Putnam County’s “mountain town,” Monterey provides guests with quaint downtown shopping and dining while also providing scenic outdoor amenities. A replica train depot and visitors’ center lure guests to discover area mining and railroad heritage. Bee Rock, less than two miles from the depot, offers panoramic views to make guests feel a million miles from the hustle and bustle. Festivals, train excursions, farmers’ markets, and cruiseins add to the enchanting small town feel.

Algood

From antiquing to quilting to stagecoach history, the small city of Algood is one of rich heritage. A popular stop on Old Walton Road, the stagecoach route joining Nashville and Knoxville in the early 1800’s, Algood is home to White Plains Plantation. The antebellum home, now a private residence, was an inn offering a place for weary travelers such as President Andrew Jackson to rest enroute to the Capitol. First Lady Rachel Jackson was known to quilt at the home during stops, with one of her quilts as part of the White Plains collection.
