By The Star STOKESDALE - Writing a book can be hard and publishing one is usually even harder, but a local restaurant owner has done both with the help of his faith. Jerry Joyner, who owns Parker’s Restaurant on Highway 158 in Stokesdale, has published a collection of Christian-based poems, essays, prayers, and other items in a book titled “Conversations With The Lord.” Joyner says that someone told him long ago that he would write a book, but they didn’t realize that he had already started writing down many of his thoughts on paper. He says in his book that writing down things was like adding a narrative to his life. He made the prediction come true when he put them all together in the book he made through a self-publishing website called CreateSpace.com. In addition to a print edition, there is an online e-version available as well on Amazon.com. Between the ebooks or print copies that he has sold or given away, Joyner says around 300 people have received a copy. In his book, Joyner includes items that are meant to help guide people not only through their spiritual lives but through their every day lives as well whether at home or at work.

“When you begin to do your job as unto the Lord, then you will be truly blessed and happy,” he says in his book. “It makes no difference whether you are flipping hamburgers or working on a farm raising cows, remember you are doing a service for God’s people.” In his book, Joyner mentions that his writings do not spring forth from a man who has been on the straight and narrow path all of his life. In fact, he says for many years, he was headed in quite another direction. “I would never do now the crazy things that I used to do,” he says in his book. “Have you ever really felt lucky to be alive?” Joyner says that no one is perfect, including himself. But the key in life is to focus on the right things, instead of trying to keep up with the Joneses. “Do not judge a person by his clothes, weight, money, or position,” says Joyner in one of his poems. “It’s a matter of the heart that determines his true mission.” Mr. Joyner comes from a family of restaurateurs who have provided food for those in the community. His father, Parker Joyner started the restaurant in the 1950’s. His brother Barry Joyner also runs B.J.’s Grill which is located in Stokesdale. With his new book, Mr. Joyner also hopes to also provide some food for thought that caters to the spiritual appetite as well. ::
