By The Star RUFFIN - The Sheriff’s Department in Rockingham County said recently that they arrested three men on charges related to a burglary and murder of an elderly man in a rural part of the county last year. Deputy Kevin Suthard of the Sheriff’s Department said that detectives had taken in custody Kaleb Garrett Dunithan, age 18; Jacob Arthur Adams, age 17; and Nicholas Andrew Lowery, age 18. All three teens have been charged with first degree murder and first degree burglary and all three are currently being held without bond in the Rockingham County Jail. Police say that the three men allegedly broke into the home of 84 year old Waverly Bourne at his home at 2179 Lick Fork Creek Road in Ruffin on September 2nd of last year. Deputy Suthard did not identify what was taken but said that the motive behind the break-in was robbery. “There were items taken as a result of the burglary,” he said. According to Deputy Suthard, the victim was beaten and suffered from blunt force trauma and succumbed to his wounds later on at the hospital this year.

“Mr. Bourne was brutally beaten during the burglary and remained hospitalized until his death on January 14, 2014,” said the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department in a statement about the arrest. According to Suthard, the targeting of Bourne was not random. “They [the suspects and the victim] knew each other,” said Suthard. Suthard added that Bourne’s neighbor had called police after the incident and that the neighborhood was on edge after the crime. “The neighbors were affected as well," he said. “They formed a neighborhood watch after this.” Suthard said that Bourne’s family was glad to see an arrest in the case, which the community reacted very strongly to and which the department viewed as especially troubling. “I have a grandfather who is around Mr. Bourne’s same age,” said Deputy Suthard. The department attributed the arrests to hard work on the part of investigators. “It was solved through the efforts of our detective division," said Deputy Suthard about the arrest. “It was just good old fashioned police work.” ::

No Arrest Made In Theft Of Two Chocolate Candy Bars By The Star NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL - On February 6th, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department School Resource Officer was notified that there was a theft of two candy bars at Northwest Guilford High School. Apparently, a student left a classroom and when they returned, two $1 chocolate bars were taken from their bag. The candy bars were described as “the World’s Finest Chocolate Bars” that are typically sold for fundraising efforts. When approached, another student confessed to the crime and although they

had eaten the bars, the suspect promised restitution. “He promised to repay the money that the candy bars cost,” said Sergeant J.J. Hamlettt of the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department District One Office. Sgt. Hamlett said that the victim declined to prosecute the victim. He added that it is unusual that such a small theft is reported to the Sheriff’s Department but that since the School Resource Officer was there at Northwest and took part in the incident, a police report was generated. Neither student was identified since both students were juveniles. ::

Church In Colfax Was Victim Of $4,200 Lawnmower Burglary By The Star COLFAX - According to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department, a burglar or burglars made off with thousands of dollars worth of equipment from a local church. The Sheriff’s Department said that a theft took place at the Colfax Baptist Church sometime between February 5th and February 7th. The break-in was not at the church’s main building but was rather at a locked outbuilding that served as an equipment shed. Taken in the burglary were several power tools and other items. Sergeant J.J. Hamlett said two pushmowers were taken including a Stihl and Greenmachine. Also taken was a

Stihl weed trimmer and an Echo weed trimmer. Amazingly, also taken in the heist was a huge “really old” 48 inch Cub Cadet riding lawnmower. The mower was very large and would have been hard to conceal. Also taken was a gas can and five propane tanks like those used in an outdoor barbecue grill, said Sergeant Hamlett. The total dollar value of all the items taken was listed as $4,200. The police have a description of the suspect but have not been able to make an arrest yet in the case. Sgt. Hamlett said that a man was seen in the area at the time of the burglary and was described as a white male driving a red, “older model” pickup truck. Anyone with information can call Crimestoppers at (336) 373-1000. ::
