By The Star OAK RIDGE - Where can you go to learn about local history but also to buy some great food for home cooking? The Old Mill at Guilford in Oak Ridge. Milners have been operating a mill at or near the mill site since 1758 and according to local lore, the British troops seized the mill during the Revolutionary War. Although the main water wheel no longer drives the machinery after beloved previous mill owners Charlie and Flour and other food items are ground Heidi passed away several years ago, like they have been for over 200 years. flour and other food items are pretty much ground the same way they have been for the last 200 years. In fact, the mill still has some grinding stones on display that are a couple of centuries old. Inside the Old Mill, you can see cornmeal and other items being ground and put into bags. In the store inside, you can purchase items made at the mill for home cooking including everything from hush puppy mix, to pancake and cupcake mixes, and of course, flour and cornmeal. There are also lots of other food items as well as souvenirs for sale too. Definitely worth a visit! ::

Most people may not be aware that newly elected Stokesdale Mayor Randy Braswell raises honeybees and sells honey in jars. Also, there are new sources including Grassfed Greensboro that have been at some Oak Ridge events and offer grass fed beef from local farms. If you’re looking for something a little different, we have seen some new offerings at the NC Farmer’s Market off of Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax off Interstate 40. One of the unique sellers at the market is a farmer who offers bison (also known as buffalo) meat from a farm near Charlotte. We’ve had bison meat and it definitely tastes different than regular beef but it’s fun to try something new and it’s very lean meat as well.
