By R. Gregg, The Star SUMMERFIELD - At the December Summerfield Town Council meeting, long-serving Summerfield Mayor Mark Brown bid an emotional farewell as he stepped down from his leadership position in the town. Brown did not run for re-election this year and is being replaced by Tim Sessoms, who won the election for mayor in November. Brown was clearly choked up as he was presented with a plaque honoring his service by fellow council member Dena Barnes. He was also given a photo collage showing pictures of him and council members at various town functions over the years. A true lifetime public servant, Mayor Brown had served in the military police before joining the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department in district one where he reached the rank of lieutenant before retiring. In his retirement, Brown stayed active and entered the political realm when he ran for office in Summerfield. Both Mark Brown (above) and John Wray, Jr. (below) were given plaques recogThe meeting room was packed, as nizing their service to the town as well as photograph collages. Also at the meeting, John Wray, Jr. was similarly honored for his service to the town as well. Wray also had served with the Sheriff’s Department and worked with Brown during his days on the force. Like Brown, Wray had been involved in the early days of the Town of Summerfield’s existence and has been involved in politics in his retirement. Wray was also given a plaque that recognized his hard work for the town as well as a photo collage showing scenes from his years of service. Wray also announced he was stepping down this year and decided not to run for re-election. At the meeting, newly elected officials including mayor Tim Sessoms were also sworn in, with members of their families present, as Judge Albright of the Guilford County Courts administered the oaths of office. ::
