Investigators Seek Clues In Rockingham County Murder By The Star WENTWORTH – Investigators in Rockingham County are seeking clues in a murder case that took place just before Christmas. According to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, the police received a 911 call at 2am on December 23rd and the caller told police there had been a shooting. When deputies arrived, they said they found Darrell Rashard Irving, age 23, “lying outside the residence, the victim of a gunshot wound.” Irving was taken to the Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville where he died of his wounds, police say. Investigators say the incident took place at 122 Wendy Lane, which is located in the Leisureland Trailer Park in Ruffin. Irving did not live at the trailer park but was from Roanoke Street in Reidsville.

The Sheriff’s Office said they did not have any suspects in the case at this time and they did not offer a motive for the killing. Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Sergeant Grey Smith of the Sheriff’s Office at 336-634-3232 or call the Rockingham County Crime Stoppers line at 336-634-3232. Callers do not have to reveal their identity. ::

While in Afghanistan, Lee McCubbins was providing security for the construction of a hydroelectric dam that would provide power for the region. He had also worked in Iraq as well. The article said McCubbins was supposed to come home this month for a 30 day vacation. ::

Congressional Candidate Sets Up Campaign Headquarters On 220 By The Star SUMMERFIELD - U.S. Congressional candidate Mark Walker has opened a campaign headquarters in the area. Walker’s campaign headquarters is located on Highway 220 near Owl’s Roost Road, at a highly visible location that used to be a real estate office. In addition to the headquarters, passersby can see Walker’s MCI campaign bus parked there as well. Walker is the associate pastor of the Lawndale Baptist Church on Lawndale Avenue in Greensboro and is running for long-serving Howard Coble’s seat in Congress. When Coble steps down at the end of his term, he will have served in Congress for 30 years.

Coble announced in November that he will not be seeking re-election, although he has not endorsed any candidates who have already announced their campaigns. Several candidates are in the running for the crowded Republican primary including Walker and Phil Berger Jr. who is the Rockingham County District Attorney. Berger is the son of State Senator Phil Berger, Sr. State Senator John Blust who was expected to be a front runner, announced recently that he will not be running for the office. Other candidates are likely to announce their campaigns soon. Walker has also unveiled his campaign website which can be viewed online at www.walker4nc.com. ::

Stokesdale Christmas Parade Was Cancelled Due To Cold, Rain By The Star STOKESDALE The Stokesdale Christmas parade was cancelled in December due to cold and rainy weather. The event was not rescheduled as new plans would have had to been filed with the state since the use of Highway 158 as part of the parade route would have been involved. This was the first time in recent memory that the parade was not held.

Former Police Officer Killed By Sniper In Afghanistan War DANVILLE - A former Danville, Virginia police officer was recently killed by a sniper in Afghanistan, according to various media reports and the Danville newspaper. Danville is just over the North Carolina / Virginia border, north of Rockingham County. The reports say that former officer Lee McCubbins, age 43, had served for 11 years with the Danville Police, including part of that time as a canine officer working with dogs and also as part of the mounted unit that rode horses. McCubbins was working with a defense contractor in Afghanistan in charge of bomb-sniffing dogs when he was shot, said a Danville Register-Bee report which interviewed McCubbins’ father. The Stokesdale committee in charge of the parade is trying to determine whether they will refund the parade application fees or not, as it was mentioned there were some costs associated with the parade that were already expended.
