From the Desk of Father Jon On A True Parish Family Night We are all called to grow in Christ (Ephesians 4:13). All of our growth can be centered around our church family here at St. Nicholas! Whether we are parents with children or a single retired adult, young adult, or a godparent to many, we all worship the one true and living Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Youth and adult education go hand in hand. Thus, with joy I announce to you the rebirth of our parish family night every Wednesday, starting September 21, 2016 from 6-7:30pm. Benjalee Pittman is our primary organizer and contact. You can reach her at benjalee44@yahoo.com. We are so excited about the new year and the possibilities to come. As members of our church, we are seeking your commitment to attend every week. Please email Benjalee that you are planning to attend or sign up in the hall each Sunday between now and September 18, 2016! Real Ministry for All Ages! We are planning for youth of all ages to be present and ministered to. We are planning for adults of all ages to be present and ministered to. The way family nights flourish are through team ministry! Each group has multiple people to help lead activities and teach. This way everyone maintains the spiritual health and blessings from being involved. Here’s what in store: The Kitchen Will Be Prepared The Kitchen will be staffed by 2 to 3 adults and several of the youth each week. The meals will be freshly prepared and ready at 6pm for a blessing. The menu will be diverse. No need to bring anything! Our kitchen staff includes: Sammy Lawler, Sue Lawler and Benjalee Pittman and several of the youth. Youth ages 2 to 4 years The nursery will host activities for this age group. We have two UNCW students, Hannah and Christy, who will be taking good care of the kids, so the adults can attend a class of their own. No worries and spiritual enrichment! Youth Kindergarten to 5th Grade – our HOPE/JOY The HOPE/JOY youth are in the spotlight for some great activities and faith based fun starting at 6:30pm. We are done at 7:30pm so that the youth are not overextended. I will be with the younger and older youth depending on the week. Jaime Saffo will lead the activities. We are currently looking for two more team members to join this great ministry. If interested please email Benjalee at benjalee44@yahoo.com. Youth 6th to 12th Grade – our GOYA This ministry has such great support. The activities and faith based fun kickoff at 6:30pm. The team is comprised of all the GOYA advisors: Doug, Benjalee, Alexia, and Courtney, together with Louis and Nadine Batuyios. I will be joining in the fun with faith based answers related to our theme each week. Adults of All Ages All adults, parents, grandparents, godparents, young adults and seniors alike are asked to sign up for the class with Deacon Tom Fernandez and Diakonissa Stacy Fernandez. We are so blessed to have them as an active part of our church family! Dn. Tom will lead the class on Orthodox Evangelism. This will be based in the gospel of John and awesome! Diakonissa Stacy will be there to assist. Get ready love learning and participate in fulfilling your Orthodox Christian Faith. Theme Based Learning Each week will have a themed based on the gospel reading for the coming Sunday. Benjalee will be working with me on some wonderful ideas. As most of you know, she is great with ideas and projects, so get ready to have fun and love learning about our Orthodox Christian Faith! 3

From the Parish Council President Barbara Reynolds September 1 is the beginning of the Ecclesiastical New Year in the Greek Orthodox Church. The First Ecumenical Council (Nicaea, 325) decreed that the Church year should begin on September 1. The month of September was, for the Hebrews, the beginning of the civil year (Exodus 23:16), the month of gathering the harvest and of the offering of thanks to God. Source: St. Nikolai Velimirovic, The Prologue of Ohrid – Volume Two. The first major feast of the Orthodox Calendar is September 8th, the Birth of the Theotokos, and the last major feast is August 15th, the Dormition of the Theotokos. Our whole year is begun and ended with the life of the Theotokos, the woman who contained Christ. Outside the church it is the time when summer vacations are over and children are back in school and we get back into our routine. It is a similar time in our church life. Some of the church activities start up again:  Dance Practice and Choir Practice start up  September 11 - Open House for the parents of children involved in Sunday School, Greek School, LOVE, Joy/Hope and GOYA  September 16 - Hellenic School starts  September 18 - Sunday School starts  September 21 - Start of the Women’s morning Bible study  September 21 - First Wednesday of Parish Family night and the start of the Evangelism classes We will also have some special events in September:  September 17 - Annual St. Nicholas Golf Tournament at Masonboro Country Club  September 17 - Dance Group performs at Brunswick County Intercultural Festival  September 24 After Vespers - Constantinople: The Beautiful City lecture/book signing  September 25 After Liturgy - The Beginning of a New Era in Orthodox Growth presented by Gerry Clonaris Please check the church calendar and the enclosed flyers for details on all these events.

We welcome back all our dancers and will be starting practices on Sundays after the Divine Liturgy.

Enosis Chapter #5027 Thank you to the over 120 people who came out to support our Panigiri on Monday August 15th. We all enjoyed a wonderful lamb dinner, which was cooked by our own Chris Tsingelis. Please mark your calendar for our next performance on Sept 17 at Brunswick Community College at 2:00 PM. Please come and enjoy the intercultural festival and cheer on our St Nicholas youth. On Sept 24 at 12:00 PM we invite all Zoyra and Romiosini dancers and parents to attend our informative meeting on the dance program this year. Please plan to attend if your children are interested in dancing (whether this includes HDF or local performances).

Un. fortunately, it has become clear statistically that all Christian churches across the American landscape are in decline and that includes the Orthodox Churches of all jurisdictions. While this decline is indicative of many things, we have to counter this decline on many fronts; however, we have to take responsibility first for our spiritual ailments within our own lives and community. We can begin by our acknowledging that we are spiritually ill followed up with sincere repentance and obedience to the gospel as individuals and as FALL WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY a church community. Herein lies our medicine that Irene K. Voneiff when taken regularly we may begin recovering and then find ourselves experiencing true healthy growth. Our Women's Bible Study will begin on Wednesday, With every great challenge there is an opportunity for growth both inwardly and outwardly. By inwardly, our character can become more Christ-like (theosis) through repentance and obedience to the gospel. The fruit of Christ-like character allows others to see into our life's actions as being motivated by the love of God. Our lives become a living witness for Christ to such a degree we become like that of an open book to those around us. It was St Paul who commended the Corinthian believers as “living epistles” whose lives were “known and read by all men,” (2 Cor. 3:2-3). People are desperate to know the truth, are watching to see if we actually live what we believe.

September 21, 2016 at the church. Please plan to arrive between 10:00 - 10:30 am for coffee and fellowship time. The study will begin promptly at 10:30 am and end by noon. We will be using bible verse reflections, podcasts, and videos hosted by Sister Dr. Vassa Larin, a nun of the Russian Orthodox Church and a liturgiologist at the University of Vienna. Each week will be a different topic. The study will be facilitated by Irene Karafas Voneiff. Please contact me at: ikvoneiff@gmail.com or 910-821-1344.

As we experience inward growth through the Holy Spirit, we are being prepared as vessels to share why we as Christians live the way we do. As Christ declared in the sermon on the mount, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Mat. 5:14). When the gospel is lived inwardly, it

September 11, 2016 marks 15 years since our country was attacked. Many lives were lost that day and many more died later from illnesses due to the attacks. On this day, please take a moment and say a prayer for those who lost their lives. Please also take a moment to say a prayer for their family members. Although 15 years have gone by, we should never forget those who perished. May their memories be eternal and may God bless you all on this day. 9/11day.org released a video campaign featuring some of the 3,000 children who were born on September 11, 2001. They ask us to stop fostering hateful thoughts, and instead do at least one good deed on September 11 to honor the victims and responders on the 15th anniversary of the attack.
