We invite you to explore our community.

You’ll trade thoughts and experiences with classmates from a variety of backgrounds and with professors who appreciate fresh perspectives. Outside the classroom, you’ll translate theory into action through hands-on research, internships, and study and service in your community and around the globe.

LIVING

SERVING

At St. Mary’s, we celebrate living our lives fully and serving others.

13

Welcome to the St. Mary’s Gateway District

14

St. Mary’s stands out as a friendly and welcoming campus– and it always has, ever since the Marianists (members of the Society of Mary) founded the University more than 160 years ago based on values that emphasize educating in the family spirit for service, justice, and peace.

“I love how easy it is to get involved in service outreach at St. Mary’s. Almost every weekend there is some sort of volunteer project going on for students to help with–showing just how important community involvement is on campus.” Mercedes Kelso ’15 Hometown: Boise, Idaho Major: English Activities: Marianist Leadership Program, Catholic Student Group, The Rattler Newspaper, Honors Program

Inclusively faith-based

While 65 percent of our students are Catholic, our University Ministry pastoral team promotes spiritual development and growth in community among students of all faiths. In addition to daily Mass and two Masses on Sunday, University Ministry offers prayer gatherings, student retreats, ministry opportunities, and faith and justice activities.

Our community, our home

Being neighborly sometimes means doing manual labor like creating pocket parks, or preparing local residents’ taxes for free on Saturdays during tax season. In 2010, St. Mary’s Neighborhood Revitalization Project, in conjunction with the Office of District 7 Councilman Justin Rodriguez, announced the St. Mary’s Gateway District, giving the community an official name.

1 day, 1,760 hands

The beginning of every semester is marked with a day-long, University-wide service event called Continuing the Heritage, when you gather with more than 880 other students, faculty, alumni and staff to collectively offer nearly 4,000 hours of volunteer service in the local area.

Fun with liquid nitrogen

The annual Fiesta of Physics takes St. Mary’s students out into the community with guitars, pinwheels, and balloons to share the wonders of acoustics, light spectrums, electricity, and more for local schoolchildren in hands-on demonstrations. 15

MORE TO DO

It’s like home ... except with much

16

Before classes even start, you’ll go to Rattler Days, an event that gets you acquainted with your fellow students and all of the ways you can pack your days and nights with activities that let you pursue new interests and have lots of fun.

One BIG party!

Started as an alumni tradition in 1916, Fiesta Oyster Bake now attracts more than 70,000 people to our campus. It features 40 bands on five stages, a carnival area, a fireworks show, 6,000 turkey legs, 7,500 ears of corn, 25,000 chickens-on-astick and 100,000+ oysters. The proceeds support a $6 million scholarship endowment fund, plus $800,000 in student tuiton aid that benefits more than 230 St. Mary’s students this year.

Better than your room at home! Twelve residence halls are primarily suite-styled and co-ed by floor or wing. They are built to create a sense of community, so impromptu study groups and breaks are common. And did we mention FREE laundry facilities, FREE cable, and FREE wireless Internet access?

Community at St. Mary’s begins in the residence halls, where nearly 80 percent of our first-year students live as part of a big family.

The competition is real Rattler Athletics is home to six national titles and 11 NCAA Division II sports teams: baseball, basketball (M&W), golf (M&W), soccer (M&W), softball, tennis (M&W), and volleyball (W).

The ultimate in stress relief Intramural sports, wellness programs, sport clubs, and informal open recreation activities let you rest your mind and exercise your body instead. Our fitness facilities include an indoor running track, indoor and outdoor pools, Nautilus equipment and a weight room, racquetball courts, a movement studio, a climbing wall, and outdoor tennis courts.

“Between going to class, attending interesting University events, traveling as the manager of the men’s basketball team, and doing mandatory tasks like laundry and homework, I was usually very busy—and I loved every minute of it.” Isiah Thornton ’13 Major: Management Activities: Men’s Basketball Team, Intramural Sports, Student Blogger, Black Student Union Currently: Employed by USAA

Getting involved in some of our more than 80 clubs and student organizations lets you meet new people, plan and organize events, and promote worthy causes.

“I stay active on campus attending many events and socials as a member of the Pre-Dental Society and the Filipino Student Association. Being ranked 6th in the nation for public speaking as a high school student, I continue to share this passion by mentoring local high school students in the art of presentation.” Kara Tapangan ’14 Hometown: Harlingen, Texas Major: Biology (Pre-Dentistry) Activities: Beta Beta Beta, Pre-Dental Society, Intramurals, Filipino Student Association

San Antonio is quite possibly one of the friendliest big cities in the United States. With over 2 million people in its metropolitan area, the city is a major hub for the financial services, government/ military and health care industries. That means your opportunities for internships and part-time or full-time jobs in the area are almost endless. And because San Antonio is a popular tourist destination, your entertainment opportunities are just as abundant.

In the beautiful Texas Hill Country, you can explore cave systems like Natural Bridge Caverns (originally discovered by St. Mary’s students!), go tubing on the Guadalupe River, or drive up to Austin, which has more music venues per capita than any other U.S. city.

Historic Downtown

San Antonio is famous for its River Walk, which features restaurants, shops, galleries, river boat tours and the Rivercenter mall. Nearby is the historic Alamo mission.
