St Margaret's College 75 th .rubilee Helen Pickering

St Margaret's College was founded in 1910, and in April 1985 the seventy-fifth anniversary was celebrated with a Jubilee weekend. The Jubilee Committee was made up of representatives from the whole school family, and with the help and strong support of the Old Girls Committee and the School, planned and carried out the programme. The decesion to mark the Jubilee with the building of a school chapel and a small theatre (the Dame Ngaio Marsh Studio) was made very early on. The Jubilee weekend began on Thursday evening with the Opening of the Art and Craft Exhibition in the School Hall, which contained works by Old Girls, and past and present parents and staff. This Exhibition, as well as the new Chapel and Dame Ngaio Marsh Studio, was the focus of attention during the Governor General's visit to the school for the well-attended Open Day on Friday. Also on Friday was the lunch for former boarders, while many Old Girls took afternoon tea in the marquee. The Welcome and Cocktail Party on Friday evening was attended by nearly 1000 people: Old Girls and their husbands, past and present staff members, parents and Board members. Saturday's programme started with group photographs, followed by packed lunches for Old Girls. The new Chapel was dedicated in the afternoon, some 300 people watching the Service on closed circuit television in the marquee. At the afternoon tea the Jubilee cake was cut by the earliest Head Prefect attending and the youngest girl in the school. On this occasion, as throughout the whole weekend, the girls were much in evidence as hostesses. In the evening, the Jubilee Dinner at Riccarton Racecourse was attended by almost 1000 people, and on Sunday morning the Cathedral was packed for the Jubilee Thanksgiving Service which appropriately brought the weekend of celebrations to a close.

Yesterday an old woman had reported seeing her two children falling down the hill. She had sent them to fetch a pail of water. Her daughter had claimed the boy had tripped over and she came down with the avalanche. There are some people saying that the son had broken his crown when he tumbled down the hill. The old woman claimed she knew best and wrapped his head in vinegar and brown paper. The girl didn't have much more than scratches and bruises. The police say the boy has a brain tumor but is physically well.

27th February 4C We can face each other K. J. Greenslade But we don't know what to say, We're too embarrassed, Others might laugh, And then, it is too late

You face each other, Standing still, You say words, the wrong ones, And the words that matter, Are lost in your heart. You never know what to say or do, And then it is over, The person that matters is gone, Did you ever say what mattered? The opportunity is gone, The person, and words are lost. Say what you mean, Don't mumble away, Or it'll happen to you, And it all will have gone, They might never know what you felt.

Poem For The Unknown 7 Rebecca Kendall

It is not a question of life nor of the joy and pain it brings It is a question of the unknown on which beliefs are foundered I have not seen, nor have I heard, the murmerings of Ulysses but do I know, that which it is all for? The mind is a cascade of wonder, through stress and pain it endures Do we see what we want to see, believe what we want to believe? Can fantasy become reality? Open your mind, you fool Can you not see the facade behind which you live! You are sheltered, protected Yes, you are a fool You must build for yourself You must not rely on others Behind the bush there is an assailant he will not violate others he will assault you Who will protect you now Not your friends, they are not there eternally Not your family it is you, and only you, who is there. Depend not on your relations or your wealth Neither will help you now What others build others destroy BE YOU! For who will give a damn what came before, what comes after, certainly not I Damn it, you're arrogant sitting on the laurels which others have built Can we respect you Some will, but I'd be a fool if I did Through a gap in the cloud the light shines through and we are not one It is, of course, entirely questionable that we should be but ... It is not a question of life It is a question of the unknown

Move Over Charles and Di - An Insider's View of the Staff The most important event of the year in the staff social calendar must have been THE WEDDING (hinted at by this column 12 months ago. First with the news, as always!). Mr Summerlee, one of the most eligible bachelors at St Margaret's married Miss Pool at Labour Weekend and will now have to trade in his bicycle for a tandem, providing 2 seats for Ms Begg's FIV experiments. Big changes took place in the Intermediate department during 1985 with Mrs Taylor moving to sunny Blenheim, Miss Slee to chilly Ashburton and Mrs Perry & Mrs Oliver taking over so smoothly that we can't believe they are new-comers. Others who are having to move away, leaving us sorrowing behind, are Mrs Hurley - famous sky-diver and underwater hockey player; Miss Donaldson, the video skier and Miss Scannell - the undisputed staffroom "character" and expert ear-to-theground. Miss Scannell ("bloody subjunctive") will be sadly missed for her ferocious grumbles, wide knowledge of what is going on, or what might be going on soon, and her sincere kindly interest in pupils and staff. Bon voyage, Karin! Because it was Jubilee year, we had lots of social jollities in term one - particularly the lunch for present and ex-staff where we met many old faces and bodies and marvelled that such legendary ancient Headmistresses as Miss Jean Crosher could seem so young and active. In term two Mrs Gabb returned from Europe with a furry haircut and Ms Yeabs took her snake walking-stick out of our staffroom forever. We were sorry to see her go (again) and sorry too that Miss Anderson had bustled off to Burnside, just when we were getting used to the dimples. Near the end of term, Miss Blair went overseas for several weeks and so missed the House Plays starring Dr Mann as an evil conniving butler and also the meal at the Mykonos where some of us got fed and some DIDN'T and the evil conniving McKay revealed her true character in a cross hungry fury at the waitress. And to conclude - another holiday "Spot the Quote" Test. Match list A with list B speakers - Fun! Mystery! Suspense! Excitement! List A: a) You need the patience of a saint to be a teacher. b) No-one is showing an atom of interest. c) This is becoming a riot in here. d) Quick and busy. e) I'm getting like a 6 million dollar man - chalk just breaks in my hand. f) When you leave school, your P.E. report will get you a job. List B: Miss Kerr, Mrs Andre, Miss Morgan, Miss Miller, Dr Mann, Mrs Jones, Mr Koopman, Mrs Coates By "M"

Drama Fiona Dowie

Again this year, drama played a large part in the cultural activities available at school. In term one, the combined Colleges production of "The Merchant of Venice" featured Fiona Dowie, Kathy Gerard, Rebecca Kendall, Wendy Thompson, Emma Speight, Jenny Wells, Philippa Le Couteur, Imogen Dickie, Kat Stamers-Smith and Katy Gosset. During the next two terms two Drama Clubs were run, the Senior and Junior. The Junior Club was taken by a sixth former, Hilary Patterson who helped and encouraged the third and fourth formers through a play. Suitably she was awarded Drama Honours this year. The Senior Drama Club was headed by Mrs Coates. A play was cast and rehearsed - but unfortunately due to the many other commitments towards the end of the year, it died a seemingly natural death. Seven short class plays were performed also. We would like to thank all those who helped to get things going and were instrumental in continuing existance of drama at St Margaret's, especially Mrs Coates, Ms Begg, Miss Donaldson and Hilary Patterson. Good luck for next year.

,Japanese Trip Rachel Milne

On the 27th of December, seven 5th formers, three 6th formers and two 7th formers all who have studied at least three years Japanese, leave for a three week trip to Japan. The girls will be accompanied by two teachers, Mrs McKay who will be looking after the girls and Mr Koopman who has been busy since March organising things and making all the arrangements. We also owe thanks to Mrs Lewis who has kindly offered to teach us various Maori songs and dances to perform throughout our tour. Highlights will be: Tokyo, a real Japanese festival, shrines and temples, the Bullet Train; trips to Hiroshima, Miyajima and Kyoto; a night in a Buddhist monastery; a week at Hikarigoaka Girls High School; the Toyota car factory and the Noritake China factory. Everyone goes to shrines and temples to pay their respects. All the women are dressed up in the traditional Japanese kimono, and traditional rice cakes are baked. For the second week we will all take the Bullet Train to Kurashiki, the sister city of Christchurch, where we will stay for four days. During this time we will visit the mayor, a senior high school, and make a day trip to Hiroshima and the Peace Memorial Museum. We will also be making a trip to Miyajima. We then go on to Kyoto for three days.

. . to . . . .) T ransztzon Diane Gabb A "first" for St Margaret's this year has been the Transition Skills course for 13 Form Five students. This is in line with a growing awareness in schools generally to promote a successful transition from school to work. The course includes the skills of job-seeking, decision-making, assertiveness, communication and essential survival skills for the world "out there".

A central part of the course are the two weeks of work exploration in Terms I and II. Students enjoyed being placed in a wide range of real job situations; our range included nurse-aiding, child care, hairdressing, animal welfare, plant nursery, retail pharmacy, signwriting, office work, floristry, beautician's salon and graphic and landscape design.

All students acquitted themselves well and each received a certificate from their employers at the end of each work exploration week, a useful document to have when those job-seeking skills are really put to the test.

Musicals Sara Zino, Emma Speight

This year there were two combined productions with Christ's College. At the end of June there was the Merchant of Venice in which Fiona Dowie and Kathy Gerard excelled themselves as Portia and Nerissa respectively, Fiona giving full reign to her acting prowess in her "Quality of Mercy" speech. Andrew Terris, Andrew Withers, Richard Evans, Richard Bullen and Dan Parker took on the male leads with enthusiasm and much humour behind stockings and makeup(!) One of the highlights was the spirited performance by Nick Tapper and Andrew Granger as Launcelot Gobbo and Old Gobbo. Thanks must go to Miss Kerr for her outstanding work with the musicians, who performed very competently. Of course we mustn't forget all the other skilled(?) actors who so willingly gave up their time, talent and expertise to make this play possible. The other major production was the musical Oliver - in which boarders found many parallels to their own existence. This took place during the Christ's College Sports weekend. It was a major production involving 74 enthusiastic young ladies and men, as well as the orchestra, under the baton of Miss Kerr. Fiona Dowie and Jeremy Caird exhibited much force and humour in their portrayal of Widow Corney and Mr Bumble. Amanda Blanchard-Sell showed sensitive restraint in her role as Nancy, and Nancy's best qualities were brought out by the abrupt arrival of Bill Sykes, played by the lame Michael Hutton. Fagin's avaricious approach to his pick-pocketing boys was skilfully displayed by the talents of Richard Evans. Oliver, shared by Richard Winnicott and James Corballis, touched the hearts of many in the audience. "Oliver" was a great success and a fitting farewell for Mr E.R. Field-Dodgson. In both productions many thanks must go to the people behind the scenes; wardrobe and makeup ladies; designers; technical direction; set construction; and the very capable management by John Boardman in "The Merchant of Venice", and Mr D.G. Hamilton and Mr N.H. Lindo in "Oliver".

Kowhai House Notes Victoria Miller Captain

This year has been a reasonably successful one for Kowhai. We started off on a high note when we came second in the Swimming Sports. We went into a bit of a decline in the Athletic Sports by coming fourth. (At least we didn't come last.) House day was a bit better for Kowhai. We came second in the netball and third equal in the hockey. Even though we didn't get a place in the plays we had a lot of fun making "'Allo 'Allo", our House play. I would especially like to thank the 6th Formers who produced it. Also congratulations to Miriam Lucock who won the Best Actress award. A special thanks must go to Julia Burdon (deputy) who helped me tremendously in the organisation of the House this year. Good luck for future years!!!!

Matipo House Report Susie Vernon For Matipo, 1985 has been a very successful year Captain and determination.

due to lots of house spirit

Results were mediocre in the swimming sports with us coming fourth. The big thrill of the day was when we achieved a first in the junior relay and the House Crocodile!! We did much better in the Athletics Sports gaining a well earned second. The Junior relay team came first and many other girls gained well deserved places in their individual events. Congratulations to everybody who did so well. In the second term we came third in the netball and had average results in the hockey. The house lunch was delicious with lots of food to go round. The highlight of the day was when we came 1st equal with our play "Romeo and Juliet". Thanks to everybody who showed off their acting abilities and especially to Merryn Winnicott who wrote it. Congratulations to all girls who earned mentions, workbars, pockets and colours. Finally, thank you to Annabel Pringle, my vice captain for all her help and everybody else who made it such a successful year. Best of luck for 1986.

Manuka House Report Fiona Dowie What an upturn in House spirit this year for the girls in Manuka House! The increase Captain in spirit has certainly aided our recently dwindling success, making 1985 one of the best years Manuka has had in a long time. We began the year by winning the swimming sports. We had Katie Warden Junior first-equal champion, Rebecca Paterson Intermediate runner-up, Phoebe Gerard Senior champion and Anna Clark Senior runner-up. The senior relay team won for the first time ever. The junior relay came third as did the house crocodile. Unfortunately the Athletic sports didn't go quite as well but the will was there and again our senior relay won.

Things improved again on House day and our hockey team came second. Thanks to all the girls who played - mostly at very short notice. The House netball was well done by all. Most heartiest congratulations have to go to Sarah Byrne and Amanda BlanchardSell who wrote and produced this year's original House play entitled "Murder in the Palace". Along with several other helpful sixth formers they managed to grasp the elusive first place for the House play. Manuka had best script and best actress also awarded to our house. Thanks need to also be given to all the girls who received workbars, mentions and P.E. awards. Congratulations to all who helped make this year such a success, especially Jane Heyward my Vice Captain. Good Luck for all the years to come - keep up the good work.

Rimu House Report Penny Nelson Captain

1985 has been a prosperous ,year for Rimu, as we gained 5th place in the swimming sports and managed a fourth in the athletic sports. The juniors also impressed us by coming first in their sports. Well done! House Day was enjoyable as usual. Although unplaced our production "Little Green Riding Hood" was heaps of fun and produced the hit single "Pooh Bear was surveying the scene Na Na Na Na". Thanks go to an organised and talented group of sixth formers. Although we came last in the House Net ball we dazzled everyone by coming first in the House Hockey. I have enjoyed my year as House Captain and was encouraged by the degree of House Spirit. Thanks to Nicky Scott, my organised Deputy, we managed to keep above water. Good Luck for next year and keep up that House Spirit!

Rata House Report Jenny Dawson Captain

The beginning of this year for Rata was not as successful as hoped, but our success could not help but shine as the year progressed with all the enthusiasm put into the year's events. The swimming sports do not appear to be our forte as once again we were placed last on points, but not in effort. More co-ordination in the house croc would be advisable after our pitiful effort. It appears that Rata house excels in the athletic sports, coming out on top again this year. Some fine individual talent was shown and tremendous team effort was evident throughout the day. The highlight for me was the winning of the whole house relay. My congratulations to all those who won championship events in both the swimming and athletic sports, keep the good work up. House day is always a major event in the second term. We came fourth in our house hockey, which was disappointing considering the individual talent we had in the team. Netball this year slipped to fourth place, probably due to the loss of several "A" team players, not the lack of effort. My thanks to Jo Rhodes for organising the netball teams. Our house lunch was well earned by all, whether on the court or the sideline, and well worth waiting for. It would have been nice to have more parental support during the day. "Batman and Robin", our house play was a novel idea and lots of fun for everyone taking part. Thank you to the sixth formers for their hard work. Congratulations to all girls who received colours, pockets, workbars, phys ed awards and mentions, which all contribute to house points. Finally I would like to thank all the house for their tremendous support during the year, in particular Joanne Rhodes my Vice Captain. All the best for the future years.

Konini House Report Deanna Fegan Captain

1985 has been a good year for Konini, both in results and spirit. We had a lot of fun and I had an enjoyable year as house captain. We got a very commendable third place in the swimming sports - congratulations to all the girls who gained places and put in so much effort, especially Sian Rutledge who was intermediate champion, and the House Croc with our second placing. Athletics was also a great success, and once again we were placed third. We had heaps of fun in the various relays, gathering first place at the wrong end in the whole house relay! However the intermediate relay gained first place. We gained first place in the House Day netball which was a bonza effort done!

well

Unfortunately our hockey was not up to the same standard and we were vanquished by Kowhai. Thanks to all girls who played in these teams. The house lunch proved to be very popular, especially with Jane Cartridge my deputy, who showed the juniors how to "pig-out" in style! "The Elves and the Shoemaker" was this year's play and although we were not placed we were awarded best costumes. Thanks to the sixth-formers for organising the play. Overall we've had a very successful year. Thank you, Koninians, for getting so MANY pockets, colours and other awards. Special thanks to Jane Cartridge, my deputy, for all her help and support throughout the year - I couldn't have done it without her. Best of luck for next year!

Boarding House Notes Jane Cartridge

This year has been quite a busy one for the boarding house due to more fundraising, and the Jubilee celebrations. The house prefects set up a Boarders Tuck Shop, profits from which go towards the new chapel. It has been a great success and never without business!!! A car wash was held in the third term to raise funds for Sue Stokes who leaves for a Yeti expedition in December this year. Once again videos were shown on Saturday evenings and proved to be popular. Due to "Parental Pressure" there has been found a need to provide activities for the junior forms during the week-ends. Up until now these have ranged from interform sports games to attending a One Day Horse Trial Event out at the Riccarton Race Course. The purchase of a B.B.Q. at the beginning of the year has provided the opportunity to have more relaxed meals in the week-end. As the weather gets warmer these will hopefully become more frequent. The number of girls attending Wednesday morning chapel services taken by Miss Graham has increased this year. Sunday services are now held in the school Chapel, but the singing still leaves a lot to be desired - perhaps it will improve?!! The second term saw a new arrival in Warren House - greeted with much enthusiasm by the junior girls, and Mrs Miller, who issued an extra week-end leave to all, on the arrival of her grand-daughter Olivia. Although the year has been a hectic one, Mrs Miller has coped very well through thick and thin and the boarding house has run as smoothly as always. A special thanks to my deputy Helen Lissaman and the House Prefects for all of their support and co-operation throughout the year. I hope that next year goes as well as this one has.

HousePlays Susan Dawson

The house plays this year were performed with lots of enthusiasm and much new talent appeared in the way of singers and dancers! Two plays were placed first equal - Matipo's original version of "Romeo and Juliet" and Manuka's "Murder in the Palace". The award for the best script went to Manuka mostly by Sarah Byrne, and the "Best Actress" award went to Fiona Dowie of Manuka for her role as Inspector Clousot; with second place going to Miriam Lucock of Kowhai. Our thanks go to Mrs Bishop for judging the plays this year.

Tramping Club Annabel The year started off with the Annual Trip to Cave Stream which was enjoyed by Gosset all, including a group of Japanese students who were visiting the school.

Our first and only trip to the Hut for the year wouldn't have taken place had it not been for the people organising me into action, namely Ms Begg and my wonderful secretary Megan Clark. But it went ahead and was thoroughly enjoyed. We managed to conquer Woolshed Hill (mountain) and the freezing depths of the Waimak! This term, because of upcoming exams and other trivial matters, we have not managed to fit in another tramp. Special thanks to the committee, which didn't do much apart from attending one very brief meeting and posing for the photograph, and to Ms Begg for all her advice. I hope next years tramping club have as much fun as we have had.

Modern Gym Kari McCormick

This year we have expanded the club and we now have junior rhythmical gym on Mondays and senior club on Thursday afternoons and Thursday nights. In the first and second term everyone worked hard for the gym competitions. Six girls entered and all did well. In the third term girls worked toward certificates, bronze and silver badges. There has been a lot of interest in the club this year and next year we hope to have many new girls doing rhythmical gym.

This year was our first time playing in the Monday night competition. We were all very nervous, but after winning our first game we gained enough confidence to eventually win our section! At the end of the first term we played in the Canterbury /Westland tournament. There were 16 teams in our grade so we were extremely pleased with our result of fifth place. This placing assured us of a place in the league in the third term: the top eight teams in Christchurch compete on Wednesday nights at Shirley Boys' High School. We had a third form team and a "B" team also this year. These teams competed on Wednesday afternoons and were also very successful. Much of the A squad's success was due to the very competent coaching of Brian Marshall. We thank him very much for coaching us and hope he enjoyed himself as much as we did. Practices were on Sunday mornings but later changed to Thursdays from 6.30 p.m. - much more convenient!! Thank you to staff members, Mr Summerlee for umpiring, Mrs Crozier for transport, and especially Mrs Andre and Mrs Manson for support, encouragement and transport. Thanks to the P.T.A. for providing new shirts. Finally, my thanks to Sara-Jane my Vice-Captain. I would like to wish next year's teams the best of luck and an enjoyable and successful season!

Senior Hockey Report Jenny In the Wednesday competition this year we entered four senior teams, and a third Dawson form team.

This year's A team was the host of many talented players with well advanced skills. This, however, was not enough. As a team we often did not rise to our full potential, and as a result we ended up with a loss and two draws on our slate. The B team worked hard all year winning all but one game. Quadrangular tournament was held at St Margaret's this year. We were placed second. The South Island tournament was also in Christchurch. Again, we did not play to our potential though some players and their game did improve. We came fourth, a disappointment for everyone. However, later we won convincingly against Nelson Girls' College. A Saturday team was started again this year, captained by Vicky Barrett, which had moderate success. Thanks go to our new coach, Mrs Hack, for her invaluable coaching and advice; to Miss Morgan, Mrs Lennie, Mrs Lockten and Mrs Hurley also for their assistance. .runior School Netball The junior school have again played in the many weathered competition for independent primary schools. We won some and lost some but the Monday afternoon matches were most enjoyable. Konini won the Round Robin tournament that was played between the houses.

Netball Notes Jane Netball this year has once again been a great success, although teams didn't do as Cartridge well as in previous years. We had eight Cranmer teams. Due to the enthusiasm of both the girls and some mothers the Cranmer Netball Club was established. It was opened on Sunday August 4th with a handicapped tournament played between all of the Cranmer teams. This turned out to be a great day with lots of fun. A cup was presented to the club by Mrs Dawson and Mrs Anderson to be awarded to the team who performed best in the Saturday Competition. This year it was won by the "D" team. Quadrangular tournament was held at St Margaret's this year. Although the A squad was very young, we managed to come first equal with Craighead after some very closely fought games. It was good to see so many parents attending the games and supporting us. At mid-term Nelson College played both the A and B teams. Once again it was an exciting game; we lost by one goal. The South Island tournament was held in Dunedin (with rain, hail and a wee bit of sunshine!) during the August holidays. We raised money for this by selling bags of sheep manure which appeared to be very popular. We did better than expected at the tournament winning four games, drawing one and losing two, thus being placed third in our section. Thanks to all of the parents for their untiring support and enthusiasm. It was a most enjoyable week with a lot of laughs and fun. All in all it has been a most enjoyable netball season. It did take a while for the A team to win a game but due to Miss Mangos's professional coaching and encouragement we finally had a victory. This year with much help from Miss Mangos, a cricket team has been established with many interested and promising players. Part of Miss Mangos's help was to obtain a coach for us, Mr Tothill, who convinced Christ's College cricket officials to give us some of their old gear for practice. Thanks to his fine coaching we managed to achieve a victory in our first game and we are now making splendid progress. The new rules have made it possible for everyone to get a bat and encourages bowling so that everyone's skills are becoming more accomplished. Thanks again to all those who have helped us throughout the season and to the keen members who have kept our team going. All the best of luck for next year. This year we had our strongest team for some time. We proved this by gaining second place in the secondary schools championships - losing only to Girls High. Practices this year were on Monday nights from 5-6 p.m. The lower grade teams did not do as well this year, but with the keen up and coming players we hope next year will have better results! At the end of the second term we had the opportunity of playing Nelson Girls whom we defeated 9-0. We would like to thank Jane Clarke for her valuable coaching of the A team which helped us get the results we have been trying to achieve for so long. Thanks also to Mrs Jones for all her support and encouragement the transport in her mighty Mini!!

We would like to thank Miss Morgan and Mrs Jennings for all their time and effort spent coaching the teams. Eventing Helen Pain

On September 22 an Inter-Secondary Schools One Day Horse Trial was held at Riccarton Racecourse. 50 teams had entered and St Margaret's had two teams of 4 riders consisting of: Helen Pain, Mandy Geddes, Charlotte Sellor, Kate Perlains; and Emily Templeton, Mary Wakeman, Anna Hill and Anna Rainey. Both teams performed well in the dressage with one team lying second. The cross country drastically altered team positions. The course was set over the 1985 Pony Club Championships course, which had been lowered and altered slightly. Out of the eight riders, all but three completed the course, and two had clear rounds. Most of the riders went clear over the well-built show jumping course, leaving one team 7th overall, and the other team 8th in the event for eliminated teams. Kaikoura High School won overall, with Hilmorton coming second, and Rangi Ruru third. Cheviot Area School won the prize for best presented team. Special thanks to Mrs Lightfoot for managing the teams and to Caroline Usher and Sophie Hargreaves for their help.

Swimming Notes Jane Cartridge

After a great deal of time and effort and a second attempt, the swimming sports were held on Thursday 21st February. It was a successful day with a lot of girls showing great potential and sportmanship. The results were: Senior Champion: P. Gerard Runer-up: A. Clark Intermediate Champion: S. Rutledge Runner-up: R. Patterson Junior Champion: K. Maguire, K. Warden Most points not a champion: K. Stamers-Smith, C. Sellar The Quadrangular tournament was held at Craighead in Timaru. We swam some good races but the competition was very tough. Once again Rangi were our main rivals and forced us into a close second place. Better luck next year!! The inter-secondary schools competition was held on Wednesday 27th February. As usual there was some tough competition, but St Margaret's certainly didn't disgrace itself. Most girls and all relays managed to get places in the finals. At the inter-independent Primary Schools swimming sports St Margaret's gained two firsts, three seconds and six thirds. The Under-12 relay was placed second and the open Medley relay were placed third which was the first girls' team. The girls represented St Margaret's very well and showed the potential talent of our junior swimmers. Well done! There were enough capable and keen girls to enter two teams in the Monica Thacker competition. After a lack of potential athletes, the school is finally seeing very promising juniors coming through. This can be shown by the good results obtained at the inter-school meetings, relays included. All three relays reached the final. Results from Inter-school: Annabel Glasson - 2nd 100m Hurdles Louise Mowat - 3rd 1500m Amanda Chater - 3rd Intermediate Javlin Instead of having our school sports, (held on 14th March) after the Inter-school, we had them before. This was helpful because it gave girls a chance to prove themselves worthy of trying for the team. The day was a great success due mainly to the untiring help and effort of the Sports Council, and Miss Mangos and Miss Morgan. Results of the School sports: Senior champion: Shirlene Lamb; Second: Phoebe Gerard Intermediate champion: Fiona McKenzie, Annabel Glasson (first equal) Junior Champion: Julie Dawson; Second equal; Mary Wakeman, Pam Gerard The first term saw two progressive changes, from which the girls benefited greatly. Mr Arthur Mahon willingly gave up his time to take a group of girls on Monday nights in the first and third team. I'm sure his experience has helped these girls.

The second change was held in our school sports. It was the introduction of the 1500m open. This is a good chance for girls to be challenged by longer distances. This race was won by Mandy Rutherford, a junior with potential for the longer distances. Second place went to a promising junior, Louise Mowat, whose dedication to the sport is admired. We had three girls compete in the South Island Championships in Oamaru. Phoebe Gerard, Victoria Barrett and Shirlene Lamb. Despite competing in the hail and having layers of clothing on and still being cold, the meeting was successful and enjoyable. This year we were literally thrown in at the deep end with organising the swimming sports. Heats had to be timed and finalists found. Our main job with the swimming sports was to get everyone organised and make sure all the races ran smoothly. This is not as easy as it sounds but things all went well. Our next major task was the athletics sports. Many lunch hours and time after school were taken up with heats. Once these were sorted out we were then left to make sure the sports ran according to plan. After these two events are over in the first term, we generally have nothing major to do except decide who has earned colours and pockets. This is never an easy task!! This year though, we hosted the winter quadrangular tournament. We had to make sure that everyone was well taken care of and that there was First Aid, food and drink available. This was, perhaps, the most rewarding job of all when we received praise from the other schools for our organisation and hospitality. Our final task of the year is to vote for the girl who should receive the Mollie Copper Award for service to sport, and to select the new sixth formers for next year's sports Council. For all next year's members I wish you the best of luck.

Arts Awards Penny Nelson

At last visible recognition for the so called "intellectual anties who can't play sport" has been achieved at St Margaret's. Merit awards and grey sashes for excellence in music, debating, drama and chess are now a regular part of the end of term mark reading. Some feel that the prestige of the sports sash is diminishing with the introduction of the arts sash. They feel that only sports people deserve visible recognition as they represent the school and spend many hours of their own time developing their skills. However we believe that those who have earned merit awards are just as dedicated and add much to school life. Miss Kerr and her choirs have many weekend engagements and those who prey outside the music room during lunch-hours will know of the tremendous amount of hard vocal labour singing involves. Unfortunately the plays and musicals that entertain you don't come together overnight either. Even a seemingly simple debating speech or chess game can take hours to complete. It is important that people are recognised for their varying talents and we believe that the introduction of merit awards has added much to the "all rounded" atmosphere of St Margaret's. I just wonder how long it will be before a red blazer accommodates arts awards or an Arts Council is introduced.

Library N ates Maxine Elliott & Megan Clark

It has been an unsettled year with many interruptions due to the library renovations which caused the library to be closed in the first term. The help oflast year's librarians was much appreciated in the lugging of heavy books. The extensions to the library included an increase in size of the work room which not only provides a haven for librarians but brings added enthusiasm to the job of processing books. The increase in size of the main room has also been an asset to the library with more work space and lounge area (especially used on cold winter days). All this year's librarians have worked well, although some 7th formers were somewhat reluctant librarians (due to a heavy work load of an extremely hard-working group of individuals). There were frequent phone calls from Mrs Chandler to Tonbridge to reassure us that we were all very much in demand. The traditional yearly adventure to the deep depths of the Gardens in search of food in which to feed the starving librarians proved once again to be very successful. Now comes the time in which Thank-you's need to be given. Firstly, a big thank you to Mrs Thomas and Mrs Chandler for all their hard work and help throughout the year. Next we would like to thank all the parents who so generously gave up their time to come and help with processing. Finally, thank you to all librarians both old and new who have helped to make 1985 an enjoyable one.

The Fair L. Duncan

Saturday the 3rd of March: Crowds are bustling to queue at the gates of 12 Winchester St, jostling for position, expectantly waiting for the gates to open. Am I at the right address? No green uniforms in sight. Of course not, it's Saturday. The place should be deserted. But on the field are bright umbrellas, music blaring most unchoirlike. Yes the day has dawned at last. Pink and chocolate lamingtons march out of the Home Ee Room, and toffee apples from the Stephanie Young Wing but all in a good cause. Yes it has been months of hard work but today it's great fun and a huge success: the St Margaret's Jubilee Fair. Over on the hockey field: "Two for the price of one," calls the tall fair man. Can it be spent worms or sheep's eyes that excite him? "Roll up. Roll up!" calls the statuesque lady in the next stall selling fizz. C'est magnifique! Quel bon surprise! Vite vite, tout le mood. "Going going gone", and the bamboo bird cage is clutched eagerly by the excited 7th Former.

Video Club Annabel The video club started off the year enthusiastically with a large number of girls interested Gosset and we managed to put together a very entertaining video of the school fair. And although most of the filming and editing was done by Mr Hallum and Mr Koopman we all learnt a lot from the pieces we did ourselves.

The first term ended and the club nearly did too. Due to sports and other commitments we were reduced to four but with Miss Donaldson's help we perservered through the learning stages and started work on a road safety video entitled "Why Risk It?". This has taken up a lot of time with early morning filming, endless surveys and hours of editing, but it has all been interesting and a lot of fun. Special thanks to Miss Donaldson and Mr Hallum who gave up their time to help us. The video club is now well established with one production to its name and I hope the club will continue to function as successfully next year.

Music at St Margaret's The Senior Choir This year the Senior Choir has maintained a steady membership of eighty girls. Intensive rehearsals began earlier than usual because of the Jubilee celebrations in April, and as a result, the choir was singing well by then. A highlight of the first term was the release of the Jubilee record made in November 1984. The finished product looks good and sounds good too and continues to receive regular broadcasts on the National radio programme. The Maundy Thursday Eucharist this year was the last choral service in the assembly hall and a week later the Jubilee celebrations began a busy period of music-making. A great deal of music was performed at the dedication of the new Chapel, the Jubilee service in the Cathedral, and at the school's first service in the Chapel, and the girls maintained a high standard throughout, receiving many appreciative comments. Some of this music was repeated when they sang a morning service in Christchurch Cathedral in June. Regrettably, because their programme has been so busy this year, the Choir has had to turn down several requests to sing in hospitals and parish churches. At the Founder's Day service the Senior Choir with Hilary Patterson (soprano) and Ngaio Lewis (clarinet) performed a setting of the Magnificant, written in 1984 by Dr Douglas Mews of Auckland. This was kindly sent to us by Auckland Diocesan School who commissioned it. For the Carol Service this year, "Myw Lyking" by R. R. Terry is a new addition to the repertoire. We continue to be grateful to Mr David Childs and Mr John Jennings for accompanying the choirs at Cathedral services. Twenty-two girls from the Senior Choir sang in "Oliver", this year's combined production with Christ's College. Outstanding among the soloists were Amanda Blanchard-Sell as Nancy and Fiona Dowie as Widow Corney. There was some noticeable talent too amongst members of the chorus, which augers well for future productions. Again this year we are grateful to Mrs Barton and Mrs Hlavac who organised the costumes, Mrs Evans, who was in charge of the makeup, and the production team of Mr Boardman, Mr Hamilton, Mr Lindo, Mr Field-Dodgson and Miss Kerr. On Michaelmas Sunday we were delighted to welcome to our new chapel the Christ's College Chapel Choir who sang Evensong under the direction of Mr E. R. FieldDodgson. Mr Field-Dodgson retires at the end of this year and we would like to record our appreciation of his talents on the many occasions when the two colleagues have combined to make music. We will miss him. As yet, the choirs are finding the dry acoustics of the new chapel difficult. We still need to experiment with different placings of singers in order to achieve the best effect. The new hymn book is proving successful and a number of new hymns have been learnt.

The A Cappella Choir This year's A Cappella Choir has been a worthy successor to that of 1984. They worked especially hard in the first term preparing for the Jubilee. Their first engagement was the opening of the Art Exhibition where they sang a selection of madrigals and folk songs. On the Open Day they gave a public "rehearsal" in the chapel to coincide with the Governor General's visit. Together with a small number of Senior Choir members they performed Brahms' "How lovely are thy dwellings' at the dedication of the Chapel. They assisted the fourth form choir at the Confirmation and sang at the Christening of Mrs Miller's grand-daughter - the first in the new chapel. In the second term they again took part in the Westpac Chamber Music Competition singing works by Morley, Imogen Holst and the beautiful de Pearsall arrangement of "In Dulci Jubilo". They were highly commended. The judge remarked on their "most attractive clear voices" and their "good sense of rhythm and style".

In the third term they sang at Miss Tutill's ordination service and at the wedding of an Old Girl. They also sang three unaccompanied carols at the carol service. Honours in music this year were awarded to Anna Clark, Jenny Dawson, Fiona Dowie and Sara le Cren. It is good to see a number of last year's A Capella choir members maintaining their interest in choral music in the Royal Christchurch Musical Society. The Junior Choirs The third and fourth form choirs continue to provide a valuable training ground for the senior choirs. The fourth form choir sang at the Confirmation and performed some negro spirituals at an assembly, and the third form choir sang Handel's "O Lovely Peace" accompanied by recorders, organ and cello at a third term assembly. There were sixteen girls in the fourth form School Certificate group this year and they formed a classroom orchestra which played in assembly. As a three-part choir they achieved an especially high standard and they were invited to sing and play at Christchurch Hospital in November. The Intermediate Department choir joined most of the other primary schools in Christchurch for the Primary Schools' Festival in October. Sarah Currie was selected for the Special Choir and Melanie Jelgersma and Rebecca Stamers-Smith for the Orchestra. The Recorder Ensemble About ten enthusiastic third and fourth form girls make up the Recorder Ensemble. They played Elizabethan works at the opening of the Art Exhibition and carol arrangements at the Carol service. A novel experience for some members of this versatile group was performing as street singers and musicians at the Combined Colleges' production of "The Merchant of Venice" in June.

The Orchestra The Combined Colleges' orchestra numbered about forty players this year and under the batons of Miss Kerr and Mr Ellison gave concerts at Christ's College and at St Margaret's on the "Open Day". They performed works by Handel, Hayden and Smetana and Frederick Curzon's "March of the Bowmen".

In the third term they played again at both schools, appropriately choosing to play the "Royal Fireworks Music' at Christ's College on Guy Fawkes' Day. Members of the orchestra played for the "Oliver" production in October and Anne and Gillian Couper, Ngaio Lewis and Duncan Elliott played chamber music at the Art Exhibition. Congratulations to Maia Lewis who was chosen to play in the Christchurch Secondary Schools' band that toured Japan in August and to Gillian Couper who gained a place in the violin section of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra. It is interesting to note that this year there have been seven families from the two schools with more than one member in the orchestra.

Lab Report Susan Prosser Physics - Susan Prosser, Amanda Blanchard-Sell LAB Chemistry - Sarah Byrne, Nicki Weld ASSISTANTS: Biology - Sarah Zino, Andrea Ayson, Kathy Gerard

We intended for this report to be a scathingly humorous and entertaining account of our year's toil in the labs. But unfortunately it isn't - since lab work is neither humorous nor entertaining. In fact, the best part about it is us, the lab monitors. That should give you some idea of how bad the situation really is. Yet another uneventful year was had by all in the science dept., and our jobs were the same as always. Whether they were mundane tasks, such as sorting out short and long conducting leads and feeding the locusts and rats, or the more exotic varieties, such as dismantling T.V. sets and washing peanut butter and saliva mixtures out of test tubes, we did them - just. But the risk of injury was always present. Sadly, a week of industrial action taken over the awarding of danger money went unnoticed by the science teachers - probably because our attendance was sporadic at the best of times. Quite frankly, this photo was the highest highlight of our year - we feel that it expresses our true feminine individuality within the science field. And as you can see, the men were dying to get into it too. 'Alas, poor Horace, we knew him ... well ... B.N.Z. Senior Mathematics Competition Sarah Byrne and Helen Lissaman were placed in the top I 00 in this competition, which is organised New Zealand-wide for sixth and seventh form pupils.

Cantamaths 1985 Katy Cantamaths 1985 was held over the 8th and 9th of August. Teams from all over Gosset Christchurch competed including one from St Margaret's which consisted of Georgina Talbot, Kit Sidey, Imogen Dickie and me. When we arrived at the Town Hall we were ushered, with many other teams, into the auditorium where the competition was to be held. We waited nervously while the opening speeches were made and then there was a mad rush for the tables. After the instructions were given we got started. For about an hour we sat amidst a frenzy of stampeding feet as team members ran to have their answers checked by scrutineers who sat at the front. The scores increased as did the volume of the audience until a winning team was found. The prizes were presented and the crowd departed to have a final look at the many displays which are also a large part of cantamaths.

Traditions: To Preserve or Replace? Jane Coughlan During the recent Jubilee celebrations, many Old Girls remarked on the changing nature of our school. Although traditions such as house plays and quadrangular tournaments add much to the value and enjoyment of life at St Margaret's, they are only worthwhile preserving if relevant to the needs and development of presentday girls, in a rapidly changing world. One such tradition not worthy of preservation is the wearing of veils during the Founder's Day and Carol services. Relatively recently, veils were dropped from the Old Girls' Communion and Prefects' induction services. Who now laments their demise? If, however, house plays were abolished, an intergalactic outcry would ensue. Traditionally, in many societies, the veil has been and still is used to subjugate and depersonalise women. As such, it seems ironic that St Margaret's, which boasts young women who believe in equality and their own self worth as women, supports the covering of the head in an act of submission. Thoughts of pyromania have been kindled in some beveiled heads recently. The chaplain and sacristans do not wear veils - would all teachers? Yet perfectly presentable girls are transformed into almost faceless nobodies, when compelled to wear veils at these services. It is time we considered those both inside and outside the College who are offended by the veils and find this tradition antiquated and outdated. New traditions, worthy of school and parental support, are emerging, such as mufti for seventh formers in Term III, and the seventh form volleyball match with Christ's College - our generation too can contribute to the culture of St. Margaret's. As from 1986, all seventh formers will be challenged to take more responsibility within the school with the setting up of committees. I look forward to student representation on the Board of Governors as a matter of course: we have proven ourselves on the recent jubilee committees. Any school community should be capable of self criticism and willing to change if need be.

Report from the Hostel Administrator T.M. Miller

We started the year bursting at the seams with a larger intake of overseas students from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Not all of them were able to cope with boarding life and we dealt with unfamiliar problems which made the beginning very difficult. Miss Hetherington and Mrs Williams's resignations at the beginning and end of the first term made major changes to the Kilburn staffing. Mrs Walker has taken the position of Senior Matron and with a lot of hard work from all and a very willing and efficient team of staff and House Prefects we coped remarkably well. The Houses were open to the Old Girls during the Jubilee and it was amusing to see the groups reminiscing in different parts of the Houses and trying to locate their graffiti. On Sunday the 18th August, we had a lovely Eucharist service in the new chapel combined with the christening of Olivia Madeleine Parker. We were fortunate to have Miss Kerr and the A Cappella Choir. It was a real "extended family" service which I will remember as very special. The 1984 boarders' fund raising went to a splendid ciborum and we hope that this year's effort will provide the matching chalice. Our House Prefects have been issued with a badge of office this year and at this stage I can praise them highly for being so supportive and understanding. My very special thanks to Jane Cartridge for her organising ability and to Helen Lissaman for her business acumen and turning the Boarders' Tuck Shop into real "fund raising without tears".

Senior Debating Fiona The Senior Debating this year has had its ups and downs. The first debate of the Dowie year for the school team, debating in the order Fiona Dowie, Penny Nelson and Jane Coughlan, was at the Summer Quadrangular Tournament at Craighead, Timaru. True to form we won both debates and had best speaker awarded to us in both also. The next debate was against a Christ's College team during the Jubilee. Ms Yeabsley was our thoroughly unbiased adjudicator and again St Margaret's won proving that indeed behind every successful man there is a woman. The final two debates of the year were fairly close together and due to sickness the team had to be rearranged for the Winter Tournament. Unfortunately the team of Jane Coughlan, Penny Nelson and Katy Wrighton didn't get to the second round but the fight was well fought. The original team was reunited for the Press Competition and we won the debate against Buller, but with the eventual winners being in our group we didn't go through to the next round. The sixth form debaters haven't been idle this year either and they only lost two debates all year. Well done and best of luck for next year. P. T.A. Report for 1985 1985 has proved to be a busy year for the St Margaret's College Parent Teachers Association. Our only specific fund-raising event was the 'Jubil~ Fair' held on Saturday March 2nd. Thanks to everyone's contributions, a great day was held and the P.T.A. were delighted to be able to give approximately $20,000 to the Jubilee Fund. Functions organised for the school, parents and staff to meet have been: two coffee evenings for new parents, Junior School lunch time barbecue, swimming sports, lunchtime barbecue facilities, the annual trip to Broken River and the school hut at Mt White, a Pot-Luck Dinner and two Curriculum Review discussion evenings. A busy and I hope satisfying programme to cater for all needs and levels. My thanks to all who participated. In a helping role, the P.T.A. has assisted at the time of the Jubilee with marquee erection and dismantling, an Air-craft display, wine service and flowers. We have also run 5th form and 3rd/ 4th form dances, which were deafeningly successful. The ladies' committee and floral committee contribute in their quiet unassuming way at many functions. My grateful thanks to them for their willingness and help on every occasion. The Tuck Shop helper and the Clothes Shop helpers also perform quietly and contribute much to the smooth running of school extras. Thank you to all who help - these areas. We held a long-running sale of goods left from the fair and finally sold everything, thanks to the persistence of the P.T.A. committee. Thank you for your perseverance. We were able to donate $1,000 to the library this year and will have given $350 for volleyball team uniforms by the end of the year. In all a satisfying, fruitful year. On behalf of the P.T.A. I would like to thank all College Staff for their co-operation and assistance throughout the year. To all parents and the committee, thank you for your willing and able support in wide and varied work throughout the year. Jean Lindo President

Sanctuary Notes 1985 Jane Cunningham

1985 has been a hectic but most enjoyable year as Head Sacristan for me, being the first year with our new Chapel in use. Our first service, the Harvest Festival, was as always a colourful event. Sister Evelyn from the Community of the Sacred ame spoke to us and the generous gifts of food were sent to the Aged People's Welfare, City Mission and the Community of the Sacred Name. The Right Reverend Maurice Goodall preached at our Maundy Thursday service, the last major service held in the old sanctuary, and this years Lenten collection was announced. The $1100 was donated to the Save the Children Fund and several other worthy causes. Jubilee weekend was extremely busy involving several important services. After many months of fund-raising it was nice to see the new chapel finally dedicated by Bishop Maurice Goodall. On this occasion many clergy were present and Bishop Allan Pyatt preached. The $5000 that the school raised was used to purchase a bell. The following day a service was held in the Christchurch Cathedral to commemorate the 75th Jubilee. The school was the first congregation to celebrate communion in the Chapel on Monday 29th April. We had many interesting speakers in assemblies this year talking on a wide range of topics. They were: Paul McDonald - Olympic Gold Medalist, The Gideons, Dr A. Zachariah, Sister Evelyn, the Reverend Dr George Armstrong, the Reverend Graeme Brady, the Reverend Peter Coughlan, the Reverend Melva Finney, the Reverend John Gray, the Reverend Clarice Greenslade, the Reverend Rob Ritchie, the Reverend Peter Williams, Archdeacon May and Archdeacon Witty. As in previous years the Founders Day service took place in the Christchurch Cathedral and ran very smoothly. The Wednesday services in the Boarders' Chapel have again been well attended each week. My thanks to the Reverend Tony Courage for assisting us with some of the larger services. His help was much appreciated. Also thank you to the other sacristans Helen Lissaman, Susan Stokes and Penelope Rowley for their help and support during the year. And last but not least my sincere thanks to Miss Graham for her continuing patience, understanding and guidance. Best of Luck for 1986 and future years. The following girls were confirmed by Maurice Goodall, Bishop of Christchurch in the College Chapel on Wednesday, July 3rd, 1985: Deborah Batchelor, Emma Bethell, Richelle Bool, Emma Bradley, Elizabeth Bridgemen, Katherine Croft, Susan Dawson, Kate Ensor, Tiffany Halcrow, Anna Hall, Tessa Hicks, Lisa Knapp, Shirlene Lamb, Ngaio Lewis, Trudy Loe, Rachel Luisetti, Suzanne Melhop, Rachel Milne, Lisa O'Brien, Helen Pain, Ann Paviell, Sarah Pitcaithly, Susan Prosser, Joanna Quirke, Rebecca Robertson, Amanda Simpson, Emma Speight, Philippa Stableforth, Catherine Todd, Caroline Usher, Merryn Winnicott, Sarah Zino.

Try a Trade Day Twelve girls from St Margaret's College fourth form were invited to Christchurch Polytech to try a day in non-traditional jobs for women. The three areas included were:- metal, electrical and meat work. The girls in each area learnt some of the basic skills needed, which will help them make career decisions in the future. The whole day was covered by the local news team and three girls even appeared on the Mainland Touch that night. So the whole day was a great success. Mandy Rutherford, Nicola Thorpe

St Margaret's College Old Girls' Association Annual Report Helen Pickering President

For the year ending August 31, 1985. The Annual Reunion, in October 1984, was a successful weekend. It began on Sunday with the Communion Service (the last one in the Hall) taken by the School Chaplain, the Reverend Carole Graham; and with music by Jill Kerr and the Senior Choir it was a very personal and moving service. Then followed the annual tennis match between Old Girls and School for the Betty Thomas Cup, (this year won by the School) and an enjoyable morning tea in the Molly Mullan Wing. The Annual General Meeting was preceded by a delicious lunch in Kilburn House, prepared by the Hostel Administrator, Mrs Miller, and some of her girls. At the meeting the retiring President, Allison Fox, was presented with a golf bag. Allison has been asked to stay on the Board, her place as our representative being taken by Margaret McPherson, the Senior Vice President. Angela Williams is still our other representative. The Reunion concluded with the Founders Day Service in the Cathedral on the Monday night. This is a beautiful service with its ceremony of candle-lighting and the girls' lovely singing. The Leavers' Dinner and Ball, held in December at the Limes Room, was also a great success. Thirty-seven girls, their partners, parents and guests, attended. In February came the annual tennis battle with the Rangi Ruru Old Girls Association, and the Christ's College and St Andrew's Old Boys Associations for the Janet Storry Shield. It was won by St Andrew's - again - after a good morning's tennis. The Committee ran a hot dog stand at the well-organised P.T.A. Fair in March, but the event of the year took place in April, when we celebrated the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the school. The Jubilee was attended by Old Girls from near and far, and the annual Golf Tournament was held at this time so that everyone had a chance to play. In July, St Margaret's and Rangi Ruru O.G.A.s combined to run the annual Bridge Luncheon, and at the end of July your Committee presented a Video evening at which was shown a video of the Jubilee, made by two staff members. Messrs L. Hallum and J. Koopman attended every part of the Jubilee and made a magnificent record of the weekend. During the last year the Association has been run from the School, and we are most grateful for the use of the room. As soon as we have done some re-decorating, we shall move to a room in front of the Tuck Shop in Shrewsbury St. The Association is now too big to be run from the Secretary's house. Having the Office at School has brought us into contact with members of the School Staff, and they have been unfailingly helpful and friendly. We would like to thank Miss Blair for her interest, encouragement and help; and her willingness to have us in the school - especially during the preparations for the Jubilee. The Committee members have worked hard throughout the year, and especially for the Jubilee. I am delighted that most of them are able to stay on the Committee.
