EDITORIAL As we look over the last year we notice several changes in school life. • First of all, Mrs. Bowie whom all the Old Girls will have known as Miss King, left at the end of the first term, after having been with us for fourteen years. Mrs. Bowie's departure from the School will give a real sense of loss to all those connected with St. Margaret's who knew her. She worked tirelessly for our good and we miss her capable presence. We all wish her great happiness in her future life. At the end of last year we were sorry to lose Miss Deane, Mrs. Stocker, Miss Satchell and Miss Trott, and we send them our best wishes for the future. We congratulate Miss Dalziel on being appointed Headmistress of our sister School in Dunedin, St. Hilda' s. This year we welcomed Miss Rolls, Miss Hammersley, Miss Wilkins, Miss Purdie and Mrs. Dalley, and in the second term Miss Harris. A new classroom has been built to be used partly as a library and partly as a biology laboratory. It can be moved when necessary to the site of the new school; but, alas, our move up there is still to be chronicled in a future Editorial. During the first term we were sorry to say good-bye to our Chaplain, Dean Warren, who is now serving overseas. We are very grateful to Canon Parr for coming as Chaplain in the Dean's absence. Although 1944 has not seen the end of the War, we sincerely hope that soon hostilities will cease, and that the School will take its full share in helping to make a lasting peace.

ST. MARGARET'S COLLEGE MAGAZINE

We are grateful to Mr. Robins, who came on Saturday, February 19th, to show us moving films, some of which he had taken himself while on various tours through the country. The highlight of this term was the Swimming Sports, which were very ably organised by Joyce Gillman and Clare Broad. They arranged many novel events, such as " water polo," which proved to be most amusing for both competitors and onlookers. Easter exeat made a pleasant break in the term from April 6th to 10th. At the end of the term we were sorry to lose Clare Broad, Katherine Burgin and Isa• belle Williams. We came back on May 29th for the winter term, and everyone was very pleased to see Miss Thomas again and to resume dancing classes. Our hockey field was put to good use at once, and even more so when we were in quarantine for a week owing to one case of scarlet fever, but it was a week which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. We were sorry to lose Ruth Collins and Beverley Cresswell, but we welcomed a former boarder, Barbara Gordon, back to the House. On the first Saturday of the third term we entertained Acland at hockey and netball. the victories being shared equally between us. Miss Thomas held her annual boarders' dance on September 2 3rd and, although some were not able to go, those who went enjoyed themselves immensely. However those of Miss Thomas's pupils who did not go to her dance were able to give a dance at Kilburn House to which the Grammar School boys were invited. We were very grateful to Mrs. Carle for giving up her Saturday mornings to coach some of us in tennis; we hope that she will see the results of her teaching in the inter-school matches and in the Wilding Park Tournament next year. We are very grateful to His Grace the Archbishop, Canon Parr, Archdeacon Taylor for taking our Chapel Services throughout the year; and especially to Rev. I. L. Richards, who took a service for us during our week of isolation, and our usual Sung Eucharist on St. Margaret's Day; also to the servers, Messrs. J. Smith, P. Baker and P. Sutton.

HOUSE NOTES

We came back to Julius House at the beginning of the year to welcome a number of new girls. who soon settled down to the ways of boarding. We were agreeably surprised to find several changes in the house, one of them the sun-

room, which was arranged for us as a recreation room and where we have spent many happy hours. At the end of the first term we were very sorry to find that Mrs. Moir was leaving us; however we welcomed Mrs. Hill in her place at the beginning of the second term. During the second term Kilburn House was isolated for scarlet fever, so _we at .Julius House took ourselves to s~hool, had our meals m the prep. room which was turned mto a dining room, and had Prayers taken by Miss Edwards in the sun-room. We were also able to entertain the resident mistresses to meals during the week, and altogether felt very independent until Kilburn House came out of' quarantine and we returned to the normal routine. During this last term swimming and tennis have been our main activities. One Saturday recently Miss Hunter took the Junior Chapel Choir for a picnic to Diamond Harbour, where we spent a very enjoyable day in the sun. Now we are all looking forward to the end of the term, with such excitements as the house dinner in the last week and our own house concert which we always hold on the last night of the term.

THE DANCE Our annual School dance was held on April 29th, with sixty senior boys from Christ's College as guests. We regretted that Mrs. Young was not able to be present, but were very grateful to Mrs. Bowie for taking her place. We were pleased to welcome as guests of honour Canon Parr, Mrs. Richards, Mr. and Mrs. Tothill, Mr. and Mrs. Dunn, Mr. and Mrs. Wills, Miss Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Bowie, Miss Hunter and Miss Parr. The hall was decorated with flowers, greenery and sketches and looked very attractive. As we could not get records, we decided to em ploy an orchestra. The dance was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. We reluctantly left it at 11 p.m., after singing " Auld Lang Syne," and listening with enthusiasm to the College boys' deafening hakas.

MT COOK VISIT This year the Ball Hut could only accommodate twenty girls, so those who had never been before were taken in preference to those who had. The morning o_f Thursday,

August 31st, saw twenty excited girls escorted by Miss Harris piling into the South Express and later into a special bus bound for Mt. Cook. Owing to complications in the engine the bus did not arrive at the Hermitage until almost seven o'clock, so that we were able to appreciate the beauty of Pukaki Lake and the mountains in the sunset. We were welcomed at the Hermitage by Mrs. Bowie, whom we were all delighted to see again, and spent a most enjoyable evening in front of a log fire in her home just above the Hermitage. Early next mornmg we set off for the Ball Hut and spent an exciting morning skiing, most of us for the first time. Despite the fact that it was snowing gently we contrived to do some more skiing in the afternoon. On Saturday we climbed down the moraine on a rope on to the Ball glacier. We climbed the glacier for almost an hour and ski1ed up there until the snow began to get icy, when we skiied right down to the Ball Hut. On Sunday night after another thrilling day skiing on the glacier, Mr. Bowie took us for a walk by moonlight down to the Hochstetter icefalls, which were very beautiful in the starlight. Fortunately it snowed on Monday, so we had time to recuperate. On Wednesday Mr. Bryant, from Waitaki, took us down the glacier to explore ice caves; we slid down ice hills and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. On our last dance for us with members of night Mr. Tothill arranged Christ's College and Waitaki parties. On the last morning we had time for two races on the glacier, which were won by Wendy Morgan and Marjorie Holmes. Directly after lunch we returned to the Hermitage, where we were pleased to have a bath and a change of menu from sausages and macaroni. We had another dance at the Hermitage that night to celebrate our last night of what most of us agreed was the best holiday we had ever had. We are very grateful to Miss Claughton and Miss Harris for making it possible.

FORM STUDIES ON CENTRAL GOVERNMENT In the second term of this year each form made a study of the government of some country and then chose a representative to present a report on it to the School. Form IVa 1 decided to make their report clearer by dramatising various aspects of it, and this added much to the interest and popu-

larity of their talk on China. All the form reports were well worth the trouble taken in preparing them, for they were both interesting _and informative. Mrs. Young has suggested putting them together into a book which will remain in the School library. Gillian Richards represented the Vlth form and spoke on America; Alison Bennett, Va. 1, Germany; Jean Neate, Va. M., Japan; Marjorie Napier, Vb 1, Russia; Barbara Dalton, Vb. TENNIS

NOTES

At the end of last year the A team singles were won by Beverley Burrowes, who is also to be congratulated on being awarded her Colours. The Senior and Junior House matches were both won by Konini. In the first term of this year a very keen interest was taken in the Canterbury Junior Tournament at Wilding Park, and we were fortunate in being able to play on the grass courts. Wendy Morgan reached the finals of the Senior Singles, but unfortunately the first couple were unable to complete their matches in the Senior Doubles. In the Junior Doubles Brenda .Jewell and Valerie Main played in the finals. This term tennis started again with much enthusiasm, and there was keen corn petition for both the Junior and Senior ladders. We have entered three teams in the Inter-School Tournament, and have already begun our Wednesday matches at ..Wilding Park. We are looking forward to the annual matches against the Old Girls during the Re-union week-end in November. Marjorie Holmes (Captain). A TEAM.

NETBALL NOTES This year we have been most fortunate in having extremely good weather on Wednesday afternoons, thus being able to play all our matches except one. Unfortunately our results were not as successful as usual, but we entered four teams in the various grades. At St. Margaret's House, near the beginning of the second term, we spent a most enjoyable morning playing two ~earns from Rangiora. The A •team drew and the B team lost by one goal. We should like to take this opportunity of thanking the boarders for their help and for the excellent morning tea they provided. One of the most exciting netball matches played this year was between seven girls from the A hockey team and seven members of the Staff. This was played just before the end of the winter term and resulted in a win for the hockey team. House netball was keenly contested, Kowhai again winning the Senior grade, and Konini the Junior grade. Our annual Old Girls v. Present Girls match was played at the House -in July and resulted in a win for the A Present Girls-a win for which we had to work extremely hard -and a lo s for th B team. We should like to thank Miss Harris for her oaching during the season. Beatrice Iles (Captain). HOCKEY

NOTES

The 1944 hockey season was most successful and enjoyable. Because of the fine weather we were able to enter into a second round of .Inter-school hockey, of which we lost very few matches. Although a greater percentage of the girls now play hockey, everyone had a good chance of representing the School, for we entered a record number of six teams this year. The juniors especially show promise and worked keenly in the lower grades. Kowhai kept up its reputation by winning both the Senior and Junior House hockey tournaments, with Rata and Konini as runners-up respectively. As usual we enjoyed our games against the Old Girls and Rangiora High School, and we were very disappointed that the scarlet fever epidemic prevented us from playing Craighead here in Christchurch. Miss King's shrill whistle is certainly missed on the hockey field, but I am sure that she would not be disappointed in this year's results of her coaching as it is carried on by Miss Harris. -Enid

Last reason we had very good weather for swimming, everyone taking full advantage of it in training for the approaching sports. When the day arrived we all enjoyed ourselves, but we were very sorry Mrs. Young was not there to enjoy it with us. There was very good racing in most events, and the House Relay was very exciting, with twenty-five girls in a team, resulting in a well deserved win for Rata. The. House Swimming Cup was won by Mati po and Rata came a close second.

SPORTS

1944

We were very fortunate to have a fine day for our sports, which were held at Rugby Park on October 26th. Much to everyone's surprise Mrs. Bowie arrived from Mt. Cook in time to cheer us all with her presence and usual encouragements. Two jumping records were broken, and two hurdling records were equalled, with most of the events closely contested. We were very grateful to Miss Lila Gardner for presenting the cups at prize-giving, and we should like to record our a1:preciation of the very able way in which Miss Harris orgamsed the whole programme.

ORCHESTRA

NOTES

This year the Orchestra is bigger than it has ever been, for it consists of eighteen members. At our School concert we played several short pieces, most of them learnt at Dr. Griffiths' Canterbury College classes. They were " Peasant Dance," " Slow Gavotte," " Rosemary," and "Valiant Knight," all by Charles Woodhouse. There was also a trio played by Margaret Josling (flute), Jennifer Warren ('cello), and Joyce Gillman (piano). Unfortunately Miss Anderson was ill and so was unable to conduct us, so we were grateful to Miss Claughton who took her place at very short notice. We wish to thank Miss Anderson for her unsparing efforts and patience in conducting us during the year.

SINGING

CLUB

The Singing Club has been continued this year under the leadership of Miss Claughton, with whose help and patience we have progressed steadily. Most of the songs we have learnt are part songs from Dr. Griffiths' arrangement of " Well Known Melodies." We were to have sung these at the Secondary Schools Musical Festival in October, but unfortunately it was postponed.

DEBATING

CLUB

The first meeting of the Debating Club was held on .June 9th. It was decided that Miss Hammersley and Miss Edwards should take us alternately for debating and current events. During the term we gave short talks on current affairs and discussed post-war problems. We also held debates on-" That a woman's place is in the home," "That the tendency to develop flats as housing units is desirable," " That Ja pan should be treated on an equal status with other nations after the war," " That examinations of all

kinds should be abolished." We challenged Vb. 1 to a debate on the subject "That self-government should be introduced into this School." We are grateful to Miss Hammersley and Miss Edwards for their helpful criticism and advice during our club meetings.

TRAVEL

CLUB

At the beginning of the second term of this year it was decided to form a Travel Club. The first meeting was held on Friday, 9th June, and the officers were elected as follows: Chairman, -Helen Binney; secretary, Margaret Rimmer; and a committee consisting of one member from each form represented. Up to the time of writing this report our speakers and their subjects have been as follows:-Mrs. Fillenz, " Life in Hungary "; Countess Ouvaroff, " Travels in France, Italy and Germany "; Mr. R. Brown, " A visit to pre-war London"; Rev. W. Southward "A Trip to England and Europe"; Dr. B. Mason, " Life in war-time Sweden"; Mrs. Scott, "Women's work in war-time England"; and three of our own members, .June Wilson, Norma Blakey and Gioia Sapio, who told of their travels in the East and on the Continent.

TOY-MAKING

CLUB

At the beginning of the first term it was decided to form a Toy-making Club, which has proved a great success. Miss Parr took charge of the club and has given us constant help and advice. Without her experience and skill we should never have attempted to make such a variety of toys-dolls, bears, lambs, match-box and cotton-reel toys, of which the bears seem the most porular. We decided to enter a section of dolls at the time o the Industries Fair, and at the end of the third term the club also decided to send a parcel away to the Leper children for Christmas. We wish to thank Miss Parr for all she has done to help us with our work.

SCIENCE

MAGAZINE

CLUB

Since the Science Club was formed, Miss Hunter has very kindly arranged for us to visit various factories and other places of interest. Our first trip was to the Acetone Welding Works, where we were shown liquid air, which is so cold that it freezes everything which is put into it. Other visits were to Armstrong and Farr' s where we saw the process of nickel plating; the" Star Sun" printing works, where we had lead stamps of our names made and given to us; the Neon Light ~o., where we saw the glass-blowers at work and w~re each given a small glass duck which they had blown for us; and Taylor's Laund,ry, where we were shown exactly what happens to the washing from the time it arrives in the van to the time it leaves the laundry, and were specially impressed by the mountains of dirt collected in .the dry-cleaning department. Some of our club times we have spent in the laboratory carrying out interesting experiments, and twice we have visited the Museum to study the bones of animals and different kinds of birds. Lately each girl has studied a famous scientist and given a talk to the rest of the club on what she has found out about him. We intend to put all these talks into one book when they are finished. We wish to thank Miss Hunter very much for all the enjoyable times we have had and for all the trouble she has taken for us.

1943 HANDWORK

DISPLAY

This year the annual Handwork Display was held on December 8th. The exhibits were in the art room and the hall. The walls of the art room were decorated with posters, designs, pencil sketch and paintings which had been done during the year. There were several tables covered with different types of handwork, leather work, poker work, parchment, clay, glass and woodwork. The original drawings which won the competitions were displayed, and the form magazines and magazines on current events. In the hall the walls were covered with dresses, smocks, aprons, pyjamas, nightgowns and dressing gowns. knitting, cloth animals, parchment work and knitted slippers. The end of the haII was filled with tables, stools, and other woodwork that the senior girls had made. Both rooms looked most attractive and we were all 1mpr.essed by the amount and standard of the work done.

CHESS CLUB This year a Chess Club was started, and it has proved most entertaining and instructive. Although the atmosphere of the Chess Club room has not always been of the studious quiet usually considered necessary for expert play, we are improving and hope soon to become quite proficient. We should Jike to thank Miss Griffin for her help and advice to us while we have been learning to play. At the end of the year we held a tournament, in the finals of which Tessa Calder won from Audrey Pilbeam after a long-drawn-out and closely contested game.
