WHAT IS OUR COMMITMENT TO MAKING ST. JOHN’S ACCESSIBLE TO ALL?

LOW TUITION St. John’s is one of the most affordable of the top liberal arts colleges in the country, with a tuition of $35,000. In addition to tuition, the cost of St. John’s includes fees for things like books, the health center, meals, and housing. With everything included, the total cost of attending St. John’s is approximately $50,000 per year. There is an important story behind our $35,000 tuition. In 2018, we decided to push back against the rising tide of tuition in higher education. So we lowered tuition to make four years of a St. John’s education accessible to a broader group of students than ever before. How could we afford to lower tuition? Through generous philanthropy. We are in the middle of five-year $300 million capital campaign to subsidize costs for all students. Already, St. John’s alumni have given more than $200 million to make college affordable for students like you. At St. John’s, no one pays a dime more toward tuition than $35,000, and many pay significantly less.

WHY IS ST. JOHN’S MORE AFFORDABLE THAN MOST COLLEGES?

Higher education comes at a significant price, but the reasons for that cost are different at every school. Here at St. John’s, we don’t spend on football stadiums and lazy rivers. Instead, we choose to invest in the best, most accomplished faculty we can attract. And a lot of them. You’ll never sit in a lecture led by a teaching assistant, adjunct professor, or graduate student. Instead, our classes all have 20 or fewer students led by our faculty. In a St. John’s classroom, expect personalized attention and room for your voice. If we do the math, it costs $59,203 to educate one student in such a personalized way. But with gifts from our alumni, we are able to lower tuition for all students to $35,000, and provide need-based financial aid and merit scholarships to help more.

WHY DOES A SMALL COLLEGE GIVE SO MUCH FINANCIAL AID?

BIG SCHOLARSHIPS St. John’s has been ranked #5 for affordability and called a “best value” among liberal arts colleges. We provide generous need-based financial aid to make us affordable for all students, regardless of background. For domestic students, you will complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For international students, you will complete the CSS Profile. 85% of students receive need-based aid. More than 20% are Pell recipients. On average, with aid, students pay $24,800 per year, which includes tuition, fees, meals, and housing. As a result, we are among the most socio-economically diverse top liberal arts colleges. When it comes to merit scholarships, we look for students who exhibit the best qualities of a Johnnie: avid reading habits, deep curiosity, thoughtfulness, courage to ask hard questions, and seeking meaning in their lives. The award for merit scholarships can range up to a fulltuition fellowship worth $35,000.

Is St. John’s worth the cost? Four years in our classrooms and on our campuses is personally and intellectually transformational, and the college creates leaders, entrepreneurial thinkers, great speakers and writers, and thoughtful problem-solvers in every occupation. St. John’s provides a broad education that helps its graduates succeed in diverse careers, from traditional paths to cutting-edge fields. St. John’s graduates thrive in areas like mathematics, software design, the sciences, law, government, public policy, business, education, communication, health professions, social services, and the arts — often while trailblazing new and creative ways to make an impact. More than 70% of Johnnies go to graduate school. We are ranked #1 for our share of alumni receiving PhDs in the humanities, and in the top 4% with PhDs in science, engineering, and business. We prepare graduates so well for the legal world that 100% of Johnnies who have applied to law school since 2012 have been accepted.  sjc.edu/career-success

WHAT MAKES ST. JOHN’S “THE MOST CONTRARIAN COLLEGE IN AMERICA”? — The New York Times

O N E G R E AT B O O K S C O L L EG E . T WO G R E AT C A M P U S E S . St. John’s was founded in 1696, making it the third oldest college in the U.S. — and we remain the most distinct. There is no college as rigorously intellectual as St. John’s. Our students share a common curriculum — they read and discuss over 200 of the greatest books of all time. Students learn from history’s most significant authors and artists: Plato, Austen, Bach, Einstein, Woolf, and Du Bois, to name a few. Discussion-based classes of 20 students or fewer explore philosophy, literature, science, music, language, politics, and more. Whether hiking in the mountain capital of Santa Fe, or playing croquet in the storied city of Annapolis, you will immerse yourself in a truly singular education — with peers who love to talk about ideas as much as you do. Four years here prepare you for anything, thanks to the depth and breadth of the learning. The careers of tomorrow call for exactly what St. John’s cultivates: self-driven inquiry and analysis, fearless examination of complex issues, interdisciplinary problem-solving, excellence in writing, and confidence in self-expression.  sjc.edu/academic
