Dear friends, It is the end of exam season for those who have been sitting GCSEs and A-Levels (not to mention university exams). In recent years the press has generally been suggesting that these exams are getting easier, but so far this year things have been slightly different. Some press articles have expressed concern about how difficult at least one GCSE exam was this summer. One article recorded how students had left their EdExcel Maths paper and taken to social media to complain that one of the questions was ‘impossible’. Admittedly the question was very difficult, but for the most mathematically able it was solvable. There was also a GCSE Chemistry paper which made the press. A short teaser posed to students near the beginning asked them to finish the sentence ‘Limestone is Calcium ______’. If there was any doubt over the answer from those taking the exam, a cursory glance through the rest of the paper would have helped considerably. One of the questions further on began with the statement 'Limestone is Calcium Carbonate.' It was a show of uncharacteristic magnanimity from the exam board and reminds me of a test where the first instruction is to read all the instructions before answering anything. After instructions of writing your name, shoe colour, breakfast and some pretty difficult maths questions, the final instruction was “Just write your name and hand the sheet in”! Those who read the Bible can experience both situations. For some it is a mystery, confusing and impenetrable. For others it contains the answers to any question you care to throw at it, if only you study it with enough care and for long enough. Neither of those is a completely accurate position. From a time when only those with years of learning and knowledge of Hebrew and New Testament Greek could speak with clarity about the Bible, we now have countless different translations in English. They all have something to commend them. From the beauty of the 400 year old King James Version, which has 5

contributed so much to our culture, to the Good News Bible, with its turn of speech that has a great deal more modern tone to it. And then there is The Message – more a paraphrase than a translation, getting the accounts across in an easily-understood way. Each version enables us to hear God speak through ancient words. The Bible may not be the place you go to find answers to what's the best thing to eat (unless you want to discount various foods in Leviticus), what holiday destination might be good, or whether your choice of wall colour is truly holy. But for a glimpse into the mind of God, and the story of his promise of hope to a broken world, there's no better place to start. As we ponder those mysteries of life, the universe and everything, maybe the Bible might be a good a place to start as this year’s GCSE exams! Wishing you every blessing,

Stuart

Autumn Pilgrimage to Walsingham There will be a group from St John’s joining with other parishes across the Diocese for a pilgrimage to The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, led by Revd Mark Heather (Chaplain to the Bishop of Guildford), Revd Damian Miles (Vicar of Thorpe) and Revd Stuart Tanswell (Vicar of St John’s). Leaving at around 10am on Friday 16th October, we will stay in the lovely accommodation at the shrine, with full board, and return on Sunday 18th, arriving back around 8pm. The cost will be £130, with transport costs in addition. I know many people have been thinking about coming - this is your chance to join with others and experience this very special historical place in the beautiful Norfolk countryside. We need to confirm numbers by 12th July. If you are interested please speak to Jane Schofield or Stuart or Margaret Teale for more information and a booking form. (A £30 deposit is required to confirm a place.) 6

HOLIDAY AT HOME 2015 If you are unable to get away on holiday this year, or an older person in the community who would still like to enjoy some holiday fun, consider coming to a ‘Holiday at Home’ in Dorking during the week 24th August to 28th August 2015. Jointly run by Dorking United Reformed Church, St Paul’s and the Christian Centre, there will be lively talks and activities, coffee and afternoon teas, and excursions to the Bluebell Steam Railway and Chartwell - Sir Winston Churchill’s lovely home and garden. The URC Hall will become a hotel lobby for the week and lunch will be available every day in the Christian Centre. The theme this year is ‘A Tour of Britain’ and most activities are free, although there’s a charge for outings and lunch. The event proved popular last year, and several keen residents have already been asking to join in with this year’s programme. For more information, look out for posters around the town, or pick up a brochure from the United Reformed church, Christian Centre or St Paul’s or St Martins. Alternatively phone 01306 886830, Mon - Fri 9.00am - 2.30pm

Mid-week Eucharist at St John’s Friday Mornings 8.30am Followed by breakfast. After the service Stuart will remain in the church until 10.30am for anyone who wants an informal chat with the vicar.

In Memory of Jim Clark, 28 June 1929 to 27 May 2015 Jim had happy early childhood memories taking walks across Ranmore Common, picking blackberries, taking holidays at his uncle’s house at Shoreham, and being taught to play the piano by his mother. He went to the large Methodist Sunday School in Carshalton, where his mother taught the senior girls. But everything changed when his mother died of cancer when he was 12 years old. His twin older sister and brother were sent to stay with various relatives. He stayed at home with his grieving father because he’d just started grammar school. His father quickly remarried and got the family back together, but family life was never really happy again. He spent a lot of time with his maternal grandma. She took him with her to Balham Baptist Church, and he joined their very strong Boys Brigade company. He developed his faith and his knowledge of the Bible in the weekly BB Bible classes. Jim left school at 16, worked in a bank, then for an insurance company and then as a sales manager at an Australian Importers Company in Bristol. He and Margaret lived in Bristol for their first 5 happy years of married life, during which time Graham was born. Jim then took a job at Sainsbury’s as an assistant buyer, moving to Fetcham, where Gill was born. After about 12 years as a buyer at Sainsbury’s, he moved to Waitrose where he stayed and thoroughly enjoyed buying various types of food until he retired. He served as a deacon and took on other leadership positions in the Baptist churches in both Bookham and Sutton. He was very committed to the ecumenical gatherings between the churches, even being called an “ecumaniac”. After he retired he wasn’t idle. He volunteered at Princess Alice Hospice, driving people himself and organizing other volunteer drivers to bring people in for appointments and to visit relatives. After he and Margaret moved to the flat in Dorking, he also volunteered as a driver for Dorking Good Neighbours. He was one of the directors of the Highacre Grange estate and was chairman for several years. 11

Jim loved driving and he and Margaret took some quite adventurous holidays in England, Europe and America. Graham and Gill appreciated his willingness to move them to and from university every term! He was also very helpful and supportive as they started their own families. Jim loved classical music and loved to sing. In his earlier years, he had a strong bass voice. When musicals came out he would buy the sheet music and bang the tunes out on the piano. He especially loved Fiddler on the Roof and pretending to be Tevye. Jim was quite concerned when Gill returned from au pairing in California, wanting to get married to Craig, who she had only known for two months. Craig came to visit and Gill was sent to pick blackberries while Jim interrogated Craig to find out how he planned to support Gill and help her get her Master’s degree, as well as his views on the world, politics and God. Jim told Craig that he and Margaret were not happy about him and Gill getting married, but that they would support what Gill wanted! This wasn’t quite the blessing he was hoping for! Over the years, Jim and Craig became friends and Craig learned a lot from Jim as a walking history encyclopaedia. Although Jim passed away only recently, his family felt that they lost the real Jim a while before as his dementia progressed and he lost many of his memories. When family members greeted Jim and asked how he was, he would always reply, “all the better for seeing you.” This was a reflection of him being a big part of such a loving family. He always cheered on his children and grandchildren in their academic, athletic and musical pursuits and as they became adults he was supportive of their decisions. Jim was optimistic and cheerful. He was well-known for his sense of humour (puns and story jokes were his speciality) and was always very generous, both financially and with his time. He and Margaret would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 2nd July this year. During his last few months in the care home, Jim would sometimes tell Margaret that he had been to church, even when he hadn’t. Even as his mind became more confused, he never lost his faith. 12

The foundation that was laid in his early years, studying the Bible, memorizing verses and attending church remained unshaken. Jim knew God, which is of great comfort to those who remain to give thanks for his life. John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL Saturday and Sunday 12th and 13th December The Christmas Trees, decorated by you, will be on display in the Church. We’d like church and village clubs, families, groups or individuals to undertake to decorate a tree. Your tree will be both festive and representative of your club etc. It’d be lovely if you can make some tree decorations. Decorating will happen on Friday, 11th December, following the service, but, as last year, there’ll be no mains-powered fairy lights as I’m scared of overloading the electrics. If you want to have a few battery-powered LED lights on your tree on the open afternoons, that’s fine. In addition, we will be holding a Cheese and Wine event on Friday, 11th December, between 7.00pm and 9pm. If you/your club/group would like to decorate a tree or if you would like further information please see me at the St John’s Christmas Tree Festival stall on Village Day, 26th September, or email Jackie on mole.end@virgin.net – THANK YOU

Holmwood WI GARDEN lunches, outings, skittles and pub lunches are all on the agenda for members of Holmwood WI during the summer months. At our June meeting we were entertained by John and Janice Lawrence whose extensive knowledge of early South American civilisations was a joy to behold. Their many visits have obviously enthralled them and this was easy to see in the many slides and anecdotes during an informative talk. Preparations are well underway for our annual Garden get together in the North Holmwood garden of Iris and Eric Edser. This is always an event to look forward to and our fingers are crossed for some warm, sunny weather. One of our members will be dressed in the finery worn during her trip to the WI Buckingham Palace Garden Party to celebrate our centenary. We love welcoming new members and friends and our secretary, Maureen Lewington, has all the details on 01306 882057, maureen.lewington@btinternet.com

The North Holmwood Rainbows has been in existence for over 21 years. Sadly, the current Leaders, Ann (Squirrel) and Fiona (Mole), are leaving after over 10 years of running the unit, so a new Leadership team needs to be found before September or the unit risks closure. You may have considered helping with a Guide Unit, or only now realise that this is something you could do. No-one is being asked to run the unit alone – a team approach is often more rewarding and less work. There are resources, training and plenty of experienced people around to support a new team, and it can be enormous fun. It would be tragic to see the unit close because of a lack of adult help. If you’re interested – or if you simply have a question about this - please contact the Division Commissioner, Julia Cameron, by email: julia.cameron@me.com, or contact me, Mole, at northholmwoodrainbows@hotmail. co.uk. Or, you could come along to a meeting (Tuesdays 5pm till 6pm) to find out what it’s like, or you could jump straight in! It’s entirely your choice! Fiona (aka Mole)

Teas on the Lawn (or inside if wet)

St John’s Church Every Sunday 3pm – 5pm Until 13th September

Dorking Bereavement Group Every first, third and fifth Tuesday of the month, between 1pm and 3pm, people from Dorking and the surrounding areas are invited to drop in to The Living Room at Dorking United Reformed Church to meet other people in a similar situation, to chat and share experiences over tea and coffee. This non-religious group, which is free to attend, offers people ways to help cope following bereavement and the chance to meet people who understand what they are going through. The sessions are the result of a partnership between end of life care provider, St Catherine’s Hospice, and The Brigitte Trust, which provides emotional and practical help at home when lifethreatening illness is diagnosed. The sessions will be run by staff and volunteers, all of whom have been trained by the specialist staff at St Catherine’s and The Brigitte Trust. For further information please contact Annette Phillips at St Catherine’s Hospice on 01293 447343. Or simply drop in to the group. 25

COMMUNITY BUILDING PROJECT The architect has sent the builder a letter of intent saying that we wish them to undertake the building of the Community Building. A start date of the 12th October 2015 is given, with contract completion by May 2016. Ben has suggested that they might like to come in a little earlier to prepare the access road and would try for a five month contract period. So, somewhere between the end of March and May 2016 we might have our finished building. Let us hope for a dry and windless winter period! However, there are still many “small” items to do, amongst them: • To finalise the minor tree lopping permission with MVDC Tree Officer; the lopping is necessary for access purposes. • To contact the National Trust Rural Surveyor to ask him to initiate an application to Surrey County Council for a licence to temporarily divert the footpath/bridleway beside the church, again for access purposes. The licence costs up to £2000 for six months. If the six month period is overrun, then another £2000 would be payable for a further six months or part thereof. So you can see that the timing of the start of the licence is critical. Below is a map provided by Diverted Path the National Trust showing the proposed diversion of the public path beside the church. This diversion is in order to create an access to the site for the contractor. When the access path is no longer needed, the path will be fully reinstated. Have a good summer and look cheerfully and hopefully to next year’s culmination of ten years endeavour. Graham 34

Dorking Charity receives Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service The Brigitte Trust and its volunteers have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – the MBE for voluntary groups. The Award recognises the outstanding contribution of a charity or group and this honour, awarded after a lengthy application process, is awarded to the Trust in its 30th Anniversary Year. When a family member is diagnosed with cancer or another lifethreatening illness it can be a lonely and frightening time. The Brigitte Trust offers a free volunteer service of emotional support and practical help at home. The service may also provide the family carer with a break, driving to medical or other appointments, shopping or just sitting quietly and listening. The Trust works closely with health professionals and hospices, complementing their service by offering clients and their family members time to share feelings and concerns as well as practical help at home when everyday tasks may have become more difficult. Volunteers also help clients access community support. Chief Executive Catherine Hodgson, said: “I am thrilled that The Brigitte Trust and our volunteers, past and present, have been recognised with the Queen’s Award. We are often told by the families we support that having time to share some of the emotional burden can make a real difference when a serious diagnosis has been made. Our volunteers are very special and we value and appreciate them enormously”. The Award will be presented later this year by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey. For more details please contact Catherine Hodgson on 01306 881816 or visit www.brigittetrust.org

Bookham choral society presents its summer concert, entitled ‘Feel the spirit’. Under their conductor Christopher Hann, the choir will sing a selection of inspiring music by John Rutter and other leading composers. The ticket price includes a drink in the interval. Leith Hill Place is a country house on the slopes of Leith Hill that was the childhood home of Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as having important connections with the Darwin and Wedgwood families. It is now owned and cared for by the National Trust. It is open to NT members and the public and is well worth a visit. It is also hosting several events, including concerts. This month’s recital is entitled ‘Ralph Vaughan Williams as teacher’ and will be given by Rose Stachniewska (soprano) and Nicholas Moloney (piano). Their programme will include songs and piano music by Vaughan Williams, Ivor Gurney and Constant Lambert. Please see the website for details of parking arrangements, etc.

Watermill Jazz meets as usual every Thursday at the Aviva (formerly Friends Life) social club. Each week has a different group of performers, often well-known musicians from the world of jazz. The Dorking Halls opera screenings this month include Bizet’s Carmen, live from English National Opera on 1st, Rossini’s William Tell, live from the Royal Opera House on 5th, and Mozart’s The abduction from the seraglio, live from Glyndebourne on 19th. Here is an opportunity to see three excellent and contrasting operas, from three of Britain’s leading opera companies, without the need to travel far or pay top prices. And on 15th you can hear another version of Carmen, broadcast live from the ancient Greek theatre in Taormina in Italy. Also being screened is a recording of André Rieu’s celebrated Johann Strauss Orchestra, plus vocal soloists, performing outdoors in his home town of Maastricht. These summer concerts now take place every year, in a beautiful medieval setting, and are always highly popular.

DORKING MUSEUM IN JULY/AUGUST Looking for things to do during the holidays? Children at home? Friends or relatives visiting? Dorking Museum is always worth a visit. It brings to life the story of Dorking and the surrounding villages in an interactive and multi-sensory experience. Display panels explore periods, events, themes and individuals that have played a part in the history of the town and its surrounding villages. These are supported by paintings, posters, photographs and objects that bring the stories to life. Themes range from geological origins and dinosaurs to the ground breaking development of semi-synthetic penicillins in the 20th century. There are things to touch, to listen to and smell, things to puzzle over and costumes to try on. All this and a programme of special exhibitions, extensive archives of local information, family activities on the third Saturday of the month, museum shop and more. We are currently hosting a special exhibition, ‘Linking Hands with Europe’, which has been put together by the Dorking & District Town Twinning Association and celebrates Dorking’s successful twinning with Gouvieux in France and Güglingen in Germany. Both towns have similar characteristics to Dorking and a wide range of links – and good friendships – have been formed over a number of years. Links between schools, sporting clubs and music groups have proved very popular, as well as exchanges and visits between the towns. The exhibition features interactive displays (including QR codes) on the twin towns and events and exchanges that have been organised in both directions. Family Activities: July’s activity is based on the Town Twinning exhibition and takes place on Saturday 18th July, 2pm-4pm. Families can look round the exhibition and learn about our ‘twins’ and their people, make flags for the UK, France and Germany, and make a 3D card. August’s theme is ‘Explore West Street’: be a History Detective and find the old parts of West Street. Tours with photo sheets at 2pm, 2.30pm, 3pm and 3.30pm on Saturday 15th August. 45

Dorking Museum’s Family Activity days are ideal for families with children up to age ten. No need to pre-book – just drop into the Museum. All materials are provided. All children must be accompanied. A great family afternoon out. The Museum will again be taking part in Dorking Independents’ Day on Saturday 4th July, so do take this opportunity to drop in. We are also organising group tours of South Street Caves and historic guided walks of the town by appointment. Dorking Museum opening times: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 4pm. Admission: Adults £2, Concessions £1, Under-5s free, Family ticket £4.50 Dorking Museum, The Old Foundry, 62 West Street, Dorking, Surrey RH4 1BS www.dorkingmuseum.org.uk and on Facebook and Twitter. HOLMWOOD VILLAGE PRODUCE ASSOCIATION www.holmwoodvpa.co.uk

VPA Summer Show - Saturday 18th July, 1-4pm It is time to get to the VPA Summer Show where a GIANT INFLATABLE SPACE HOPPER RACE TRACK awaits. A range of different sized hoppers will cater for a range of different sized bottoms, so grab your partner/child/granny/vicar and let the games begin! Adding to the retro feel will be a good, old fashioned china smash (or what used to be called ‘Smash up the Happy Home!’ in the parlance of my old primary school). There’s also Punch and Judy, Tug of War, a Test your Strength Lucky Striker, a coconut shy and tombola to amuse and delight on the field. This year’s range of stalls includes handmade cards and soap, woodcraft, bags, bunting, Pampered Chef, Usborne books, pictures, pocket money toys, candy floss and mushrooms (magic or otherwise), with all the usual ice creams, BBQ, Beer tent and Holmwood WI teas and cakes to refresh and revive. If you’ve channelled your creative countryside juices and are entering any of the vegetable, flower, baking, preserving, craft, children’s or photographic classes, then bring your exhibits up to the Grand Marquee by 10.30am ready for the judges to admire. With prizes for the winning entries in each class and shiny silver cups for the champions, it would be daft not to have a go.

47

Family Race Night - Saturday 18th July, 7.30pm (See page 42 for full details) Saturday evening in the Grand Marquee sees the first ever VPA Family Race Night, where everyone has a chance to ride the (hobby) horses and compete in races for cash prizes. When you’re not in the saddle yourself, you can indulge in a little wager at the Tote - just look for the person in the deer stalker waving their arms around a lot. Races of different lengths will make up the evening, with fortunes won and lost on the throw of a dice – so come along and cheer on the runners and riders. Bring a picnic and buy Pimms, Beer, soft drinks and crisps in the tent. Entry is just £2 per person.

VPA Fun Dog Show – Sunday 19th July, 1.30-4.30pm Followed by BSA’s Fur and Feathers Fiesta – a celebration of animals Sunday afternoon is the annual Dog Show with fun show classes and an agility course for all dogs and owners to enjoy. Register your dog for as many classes as you wish; as usual to include Golden Oldie, Rescue dog, fastest sausage eater and best child handler, with the fancy dress theme of ‘Movies’ (Spaniel Craig, Woofy Allen, Michael Canine, Jack Russell Crowe – shall I go on?! I can you know!) with rosettes and glory for the winners. After the presentation of the cup for the Best in Show, vicar BSA will lead straight into a short al fresco animal-themed service, where all animal lovers are invited to bring along their pets, great and small, for a relaxed celebration of our furred and feathered friends. Stay on after the dog show or make it the start of your evening walk or treat your ferret, llama or aardvark to a special trip out. Unaccompanied well behaved humans also welcome. Ros Treliving

Friends of Holmwood Common and the National Trust Holmwood Common Newsletter July 2015 It is high summer now and plenty of time to be out on the Common with the family. Rob Adam, our National Trust Ranger, has been having fun and reports: I had the pleasure recently of taking out the North Holmwood Brownies and St Mary’s Pre-School on a couple of pond dipping sessions and a nature walk. It’s always really nice to see the enthusiasm they show and, sometimes, a surprising amount of knowledge. We found plenty of tadpoles in the small pond near St John’s Church and a huge dragonfly larva in the pond at the end of Mill Road next to the dual carriageway. We also found a very large frog in some long grass which led to lots of squealing until the Brownies told me to be quiet as it was frightening the poor animal!

Beastly Balsam is back This is the season to remove the invasive Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) sometimes called Policeman’s Helmet. This non-native plant was brought to this country in the 1930s and is a nuisance because it takes over areas and out-competes native flora. We spend many hours pulling this pest out of the ground and are always grateful if people can do the same. It’s very recognisable later in the year as it can grow to over two metres tall and has clusters of purple/pink flowers shaped a little like helmets.

Parties in the Scout Hut Finally, a complaint about parties from the residents of the Old Schoolhouse, South Holmwood. People have been recently using the small green next to the Scout Hut, for parties. We need to know if a party is being planned – a few people having a beer or two isn’t a problem – but when driveways are getting blocked and residents are being disturbed then understandably the residents get annoyed. There is also the issue of the mess left behind – litter, part burnt pieces of wood and broken glass, none of which anybody wants to see littering the Common. So please, if you are thinking about having a party, call me to see if it’s okay. Contact Rob about National Trust Work on 01306 712711 or 07901 511359 or e-mail rob.adam@nationaltrust.org.uk FOHC EVENTS Prue Stern’s bench Made out of Holmwood Oak this was installed on the Common at the View Point on 11th June. You can see photos of it on Facebook. Prue’s name is underneath the seat to comply with National Trust regulations. We hope you agree it is a fantastic bench and Prue would be very proud! Thank you once again to everyone who contributed towards the cost of getting it made in the National Trust’s workshop. Meet and Greet on the common On Saturday 30th May members of the Committee were delighted to meet so many members and non-members and their dogs at the View Point and offer them a cup of coffee in the sunshine! This is to say Hello to our “Friends” and to introduce ourselves to those who do not know about us. We are very keen to encourage lots of new members, particularly families with children who can get so much out of using the Common. We are at present discussing with the National Trust possible areas to be developed as play and recreation places for families and we will let you know how this progresses.

AN ARMCHAIR DUFFER’S VIEW OF SPORT May / June Alistair Brownlee raced to victory in the World Series Triathlon in London on Sunday March 31st, swimming, cycling and running at the same venues of his London 2012 triumph. Unfortunately, his brother Jonathan had a puncture at the start of the 20km bike ride and finished 42nd. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. The 52-strong British team won 10 medals at the European Rowing championships in Poland. They defended their men’s four and women’s pairs titles and added the lightweight women’s double title, men’s open and lightweight pairs, and the lightweight women’s single sculls. London 2012 gold medallist, Katherine Grainger, on her return to rowing, won a bronze medal competing in the women’s double sculls with Vicky Thornley. In Gotzis, Austria, Jessica Ennis Hill pushed herself to the limit to win the 800 metres which was the final event of the Heptathlon. Canadian Theisen Eaton won the complete event with Ennis Hill fourth, but as it is only 10 months since she gave birth to her son, Reggie, it looks as if she is back in business. Football, the beautiful game, is not looking so good at the moment following the arrest of seven FIFA officials including the vice– president. They were charged with taking bribes and fraud worth millions of dollars. This, in turn, led to the resignation of the president, Sepp Blatter, just 4 days after his re-election for a fifth term. The FBI are still digging and it looks as if this country’s Football Association might have questions to answer. Where will it all end? In the French Tennis Open Rafael Nadal was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. It was Nadal’s first defeat at the French Open since 2009. In the final, Swiss Stan Wawrinka overwhelmed Djokovic when it mattered by the sheer power of his backhand strokes. Once again Djokovic has to wait another year for a shot at 54

the one title he craves. American Serena Williams claimed the women’s title, fighting off the brave challenge of Lucie Safarova 63, 6-7, 6-2. Williams has that combination of talent and an overwhelming desire to win. Watching the cricket matches between England and New Zealand has been interesting and even exciting at times. In the first test match at Lords, England won by 124 runs when they played some sensational cricket. In the second test England suffered a crushing defeat losing by 199 runs. They lost 4 wickets in the first hour of their second innings and there was no coming back from that. In the first one day international England hit a total of 408 runs for nine wickets including 14 sixes which led to a win by 210 runs. New Zealand then went on to win the next two one day matches because they were good enough to exploit England’s mistakes. England’s football team were definitely fired up when they beat Slovenia 3 goals to 2 in the Euro 2016 qualifying match played in ljubljana on Sunday 14th June. Jack Wilshere scored two exceptional goals from the edge of the box. Wayne Rooney scored the other goal so he is now just one goal behind Bobby Charlton’s record tally of 49 in England’s all time goal scorers list.

IN & OUT Can you find your way through this lacy maze?

TAKING & GIVING If you look at a map of Israel you will see that there are two small inland seas. And if you look closely you will see that these two seas are linked by the River Jordan. The river starts in the northern hills and goes through the Sea of Galilee, then through the Jordan valley and ends up in the Dead Sea. But even though the water is all from the same river, the two seas are completely different. All around the Sea of Galilee are towns and villages, trees and farms. The Dead Sea has no trees or farms; it is dead. What makes the difference? The Sea of Galilee is alive because it has an outlet. It passes the water on as quickly as it flows in. The Dead Sea is dead because it passes no water on. In St Luke’s Gospel we read what Jesus said about giving – ‘Give to others, and God will give to you’ (chapter 6, verses 27-28). Unlike the two seas we can choose how we want to be: to give and take and be alive. Or just to take - and become sad and lifeless.

Did you hear about the slimy monster who was famous for his farmyard impressions? He couldn’t do the noises but he could do the smells.

And what about the monster who went shop-lifting? He was crushed under Tescos. 58
