To be nominated is a distinct honor. To accept this nomination infers that the nominee is willing to serve for three years in a leadership position at St. James.

Six current vestry members who have served their three-year terms will rotate off this important governing body. Twelve will remain, and you will select six new additional members to bring the total to 18 members of the vestry.

The Annual Meeting Day is Sunday, January 24, with an adjusted morning schedule:

Retiring members are Copper Alvarez, Lee Griffin, Lolly Martin, Trey Roberts, Shirley Young, and Dan West. We give grateful thanks for their dedicated service.

Incumbent members are (one year remaining): Jane Christensen, Rip Collins, Chris Frink, Tricia Henderson, Josh Pesses, and Tom Wade; Helen Campbell and her husband Bill have been members of St. James Church for more than 40 years. Helen and Bill grew up in Indianapolis but call Baton Rouge home. Helen has served as president of the St. James Day School Parent’s Guild and served on the St. James Day School Board of Trustees. She chaired the St. James Church 1994 Sesquicentennial Celebration and has been an active member of St. Joan, St. Martha’s Guild, Gumbo and has served on the Vestry including junior and senior warden. Helen recently retired as the Lay Ministries Director and Director of Stewardship and Planned Giving at St. James. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and is a graduate of DePauw University. She was a broker with C.J. Brown Realtors. In the community, she has served as president of the Baton Rouge Symphony League and also served on the Baton Rouge Symphony Board, as well as president of the Friends of the LSU Rural Life Museum and chair of the Board

Gary Field first attended St. James as a kindergarten student in 1969. He has been a confirmed parishioner at St. James Church since 1996. He was married at St. James to T’lane in 1997. His children, Ryan and Gregory, were baptized at St. James in 2001 and 2003 and both children attended St. James Episcopal Day School through the See Vestry on page three

Confirmation Classes Do you know a teenager interested in confirmation? Marvin McLennon, will be offering confirmation classes running February 14 through April using the “Confirm Not Conform” curriculum, with the iConfirm service on scheduled on April 24, with Bishop Morris Thompson. Classes will be on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. through the eleven o’clock service. If you have any questions or to enroll by January 31, please contact Marvin McLennon at 225-387-5141, ext. 1224.

Senior High Youth Rally is open to all youth in grades nine-12 from the Diocese of Louisiana, and friends of any religious background. While the topics presented and discussed will have a Christian focus we welcome all young people who have a willingness to participate fully in the weekend regardless of their religious affiliation. You need not be Episcopalian to attend, however you must be committed to engage in theological reflection from a Christian perspective.

Vestry candidates, cont’d. fifth grade. Gary is a graduate of LSU in Baton Rouge with a zoology degree in 1987. He graduated from LSU Medical School in New Orleans in 1991, trained in internal medicine at Earl K. Long in Baton Rouge, and completed an Endocrinology fellowship at Tulane in 1996. He currently works at the Baton Rouge Clinic in private practice. Gary served on the Associate Vestry and is now ready to deepen his commitment to the church by joining the Vestry. Gary says, “St. James has been such an important part of my family’s lives. It has offered us moral guidance and spiritual fulfillment. If elected to the Vestry, I would be honored and would look forward to helping guide the church through the challenging times ahead.”

Charlie Frey is a lifelong Episcopalian and third-generation member of St. James.

He attended St. James Day School and graduated from Episcopal High School.

He has served as a member of the Vestry and as president of the Associate Vestry. He recently completed work as a member of the longrange strategic planning committee and continues to enjoy his roles as an usher and a member of the Holy Grillers. He and his wife, Ashley, former chair of Lenten Gumbo and member of the St. James School Board, have three children, all of whom are Day School students. Charlie works as a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Baton Rouge. “St. James has been a great blessing to me and it is my fervent hope that it will remain a stable foundation for the spiritual life of my children and grandchildren. I believe that this prospect and the overall health of St. James are best promoted by focusing on a traditional, apolitical Christian theology, service to others using our own time, talents, and resources, and unity in our love for and worship of God,” says Charlie.

Parish Family News

Leslie Gladney was born and raised in Baton Rouge. She attended LSU and graduated from Northwestern.

She is a Realtor with Burns and Co. Her two adult children, Michael and Hays Boyle, were both christened and confirmed at St. James, as was Leslie, who was also married at St. James. Her parents and grandparents were parishioners. Leslie has been on the Associate Vestry; served as president, vice-president, and treasurer of ECW; co-chair of Gumbo, Gumbo treasurer; Sunday School teacher; Sunday School piano/music player; Day School Carnival t-shirt chair and designer for many years; and, a Vacation Bible School volunteer, St. Dorcas chapter, Foyer Group, Nursery Committee. More currently, she is active in the St. James Artist Guild, ECW, Gumbo, and 2015 Christmas Dinner. Leslie is on the ULL College of the Arts Dean’s Advisory Council, Friends of the LSU Museum of Art Board of Directors, and member of the GBR Board of Realtors. As a lifelong member of St James, she hopes to continue the positive momentum gained by Vestry to protect and keep St James the wonderful and caring place of fellowship and worship.

Barbin Caldwell Graham is a fourthgeneration member of St. James. She is married to Jay Graham and they have two children, Denton and Turner, both students at LSU. Barbin is a graduate of St. James, Episcopal, and LSU. She was the Admissions Director of St. James Day School from 2001– 2006. She and Jay have owned and worked at Thompson Electric Sign Company since 2006. She has served on the Vestry, Associate Vestry, Christian Education Committee, Vacation Bible School Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and Young Adults Committee.

She has also been vice-president and president of the ECW and chaired Gumbo.

Barbin says, “I hold St. James Church and Day School close to my heart. My hope is to continue to grow our congregation and faith as a community while holding on to the wonderful traditions that make St. James always feel like home.”

Catherine S. Harrell shares, “St. James Episcopal Church is blessed. A rich history, devoted families old and new, iconic architecture and growing physical footprint, beautiful worship experiences and beloved traditions, engaging ministries that feed the souls of participants—all of these and more make up our St. James community. Each year the Vestry is elected to oversee the stewardship of our many blessings. I believe the primary Vestry responsibility, as individual members and as a governing body, is Stewardship-365. Financial stewardship is the usual and obvious interpretation of Vestry oversight. Yet stewardship is a perpetual caretaking of all the good that St. James has accrued over its many decades while assuring our parish thrives well into the future. We are guardians of what it means to be St. James Episcopal Church today and tomorrow—relevant and real as we live the Gospel message. I have always been an Episcopalian. As a child I was expected to contribute and participate at church, instilling a life-long appreciation of church family, lay ministry and our distinctive Anglican liturgy. I joined St. James in 1992 moving here from my home church of St. Mark’s in Shreveport. Today, my family is active in our parish, including the Day School, and I personally serve on the Altar Guild and Strategic Plan Mission & Vision Steering Committee. St. James Episcopal Church has abundant opportunity. I encourage you to prayerfully consider your election of our Vestry.”

Deaths/Burials Estelle Schilling died on December 11, 2015, in her 102nd year. Her burial office was held in the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles on Wednesday, December 16 and her cremains reverently interred at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.

Buzzy Heroman and his wife, Susie, were married by Bishop Robert Witcher in 1971.

They have three sons, Bill (Sarah), Ben (Adria), and Robert (Sarah). He is the CEO of Billy Heromans.

Buzzy is a lifelong member of St. James. He attended the first kindergarten class of St James Day School.

He has served two terms on the Vestry and was on the Associate Vestry, as well. When he was on the Associate Vestry, Buzzy helped start the original “Young at Heart” party, now attended each fall by the entire church membership. He has helped teach Sunday School, formerly served on the Welcome Committee, and helps decorate our church for Christmas and Easter each year. Buzzy cares deeply about St. James and its future, and would be honored to serve on the Vestry.

Bill Hines and his wife, Bunny, have been St. James parishioners for more than thirty years.

A Baton Rouge native, Bill graduated from LSU and LSU Medical School. He has practiced pulmonary/critical care medicine for 32 years and is at the Baton Rouge Clinic. Over the years, he has served at St. James in various capacities, including lector, usher, and Scout leader. He has been a member of the Vestry, Associate Vestry, St. James Place Board, and the SJP Foundation Board. Bill says, “St. James has been my church for better than three decades and I am committed to seeing it maintain its tradition and flourish in these changing times.”

with a B.A. in Political Science, she received her Juris Doctorate and B.C.L. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at LSU. Since then, she has been practicing law and is a partner with the firm, Pujol Pryor & Irwin, located in Gonzales. Over the years, Barbara has been active in the church, serving on the Associate Vestry, Gumbo Committee, the Day School Board of Trustees, the Property Committee and the Welcome Committee. She is honored to be nominated to the Vestry of this wonderful church, which has provided so much for her and for her family.

Sue Larisey has been a lifelong member of St. James Episcopal Church.

She and her husband, Mike, have raised three children, Shane, Ben and Laura, at St. James. In the past, she served on the Vestry, Associate Vestry, advisor for the youth group (EYC), and was a Sunday School teacher. Currently, she serves on the Wedding Guild, Altar Guild, Strategic Planning Committee, and the property committee. She also enjoys the volunteer opportunities offered at St. James such as Gumbo, and meals for the homeless. Sue recently retired with 40 years of service from the Office of Juvenile Justice where she was Regional Manager for a ten-parish area and her work was focused on bettering the lives of juveniles who are involved in the court system. Sue says, “Because of the traditions, the parishioners and the clergy at St. James, I enjoy a strong spiritual foundation in my life and know that God’s peace is with me always. It is important that we continue to develop programs and offer opportunities for all people so they may continue to grow in their spirituality and experience God’s grace in their lives.”

Barbara Irwin Garon is a lifelong member of St. James Episcopal Church. She and her husband, Mark Garon, typically attend the nine o’clock service. Barbara and Mark have four children, two of whom attend the Day School. Barbara attended and graduated from the Day School herself and is a graduate of Episcopal High School. After stewardship, and graduating from the University of Kentucky as an usher. Phil

Philip Martin and his wife Lolly were married at St. James in 1978 and have been members since moving to Baton Rouge in 1984. He has served one term on the Vestry, and served on the nominating, property committees and is a professional engineer

with a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University. “I believe over the next three years it is very important for the Vestry to continue its leadership in the implementation of the Strategic Plan and other improvement opportunities for the success of St. James.”

Mimi Barnum Riché was born and raised in Baton Rouge, baptized, confirmed and married at St. James. She is a graduate of Baton Rouge High School and Louisiana Tech University with a BS degree in zoology and chemistry. Married to Guy Riché, they have between them four daughters: Malen, Hassen, Ragan and Barbin; and a son, Andrew. They and their 12 children live elsewhere. After 20 years in Laurel, Mississippi where she was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, taught Sunday School, volunteered and served as chair of VBS, served as Youth Group Leader and was the first woman elected to their Vestry, in 1990 she returned home and again became active at St. James. Currently she serves on the Stewardship Committee, is a Eucharistic Minister, an usher, and a lector. She and Guy attend the AYA Service in the Chapel.

In the past, Mimi served on the Associate Vestry and the Vestry, as junior and senior warden. She has also been active in stewardship and co-chaired our first million dollar campaign. After a mainly non-profit career, Mimi retired as Executive Director of Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge.

She also owned a successful home decorating business for five years in the early 1980’s. To fill her time in retirement, in addition to her church activities, Mimi volunteers in many other organizations: she serves on the boards of The Y (AC Lewis Branch – as Annual Support Chair), BRHS Foundation (as vice president) and on the Louisiana Governor’s Prayer Breakfast Steering Committee as Chair of Sponsorship Development. Mimi shares: “There are pivotal times in any organization’s growth and development. This is one of those at St. James. It would be an honor to serve on the Vestry at this exciting and challenging juncture as we listen for and implement God’s plan for our beloved church.”

Presenting the Associate Vestry Slate Whitney Banks was born and raised in Baton Rouge where she attended St. James Episcopal Day School and went on to graduate from Episcopal. She has a BFA from LSU. She is married to Patrick Banks and they have three children Harrison (7), Haleigh (5), and Harper (2), two of whom attend our Day School. She is the owner of Renew Pilates Studio & Spa located in Goodwood Village. Whitney says, “I have been a member of St. James since I was little, and am excited about this opportunity to be part of such a great community as offered at St. James Episcopal Church.”

Katherine Thomas Inzer is a Baton Rouge native who joined St. James after moving back to Baton Rouge from Birmingham, Alabama in 2008. She and her husband, Jim, have three children: Harper (7), James (5), and Thomas (1), all of whom were baptized at St. James. Katherine and Jim were married at St. James, and she has always felt a close connection to the church.

Growing up in Baton Rouge, Katherine attended the University Laboratory School, attended Birmingham-Southern College, and graduate school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy. She is currently a member of the Junior League of Baton Rouge, the Kappa Delta Alumni Association, and a board member of the LSU Hilltop Arboretum.

Stephen Jung has enjoyed being a parishioner for over eight years and is currently helping as an usher and has helped in the past with gardening around the church. He is married to Annie and they have three children: Bella (14), Helene (8), and Garner (6). He is a long time member in the military reserves currently serving in the Air Force. He has worked in the industrial sales field for over 20 years. They have recently moved back to the area from California to be close to family. He is looking to get more involved with the church and is excited about being on the Associate Vestry.

Douglas Kennedy is a native of Mobile, Alabama. After completing his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, he moved to Baton Rouge in 2014 to work for Louisiana Art & Science Museum, where he is currently the Audience Engagement & Public Relations Manager. He has been a member of St. James since moving to Baton Rouge and serves as a Eucharistic Minister and lector, participates in the prison ministry at Angola, and is in his second year of EfM. Adam Kurz has been married to Jenny for seven years. He is a cradle Episcopalian baptized, confirmed and married at St. James.

Adam and Jenny have two children, Anna who is six and in first grade at St. James, and Ryan who is two. Both children were baptized at St. James. Adam is a graduate of our Day School and Episcopal High School.

Amy Gaudet Rabalais was born and raised in Baton Rouge, and grew up attending St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. She is a graduate of the University of Texas, and the LSU Medical School in New Orleans.

She currently practices as an ENT with Ochsner in Baton Rouge. She and her husband, Michael Rabalais, joined St. James in 2010. They have two children, Pace (6), and Marjorie (4), both of whom were baptized at St. James. Pace is currently in Kindergarten at St. James Day School, and Marjorie is eagerly awaiting starting next year. She is active in the St. James community, and is involved with many of the children’s ministries including Children’s Church.

Julia Spaht grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. She and her husband, Carlos, joined St. James in 2013, shortly after they moved to Baton Rouge. They have one daughter, Cappa (1), who was baptized at St. James last fall. Julia graduated from Washington and Lee University, where she met Carlos, a Baton Rouge native. She also has a master’s degree in Education from Vanderbilt University and a master’s degree in English from Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English. She currently teaches in the Upper School and directs the Writing Center at Episcopal.

Earl Turner is a native of Baton Rouge and married to the former Lindsay Lamont. They have two children, Wynn and Sydney, who are in second grade and pre-K, respectively, at St James Episcopal Day School. Earl was a parishioner of St Luke’s Episcopal in Baton Rouge while growing up and has been attending St. James for the last ten years with his wife and family. He is a graduate of Episcopal High School and LSU, and is currently an IT manager with Ramboll.

Did you happen to notice the volume number under the masthead of this issue? That’s right, this is the first issue of the 100th volume of The Messenger. Thanks to archive photos by Fred C. Frey, III, we know the first issue was published in February 1899 as a monthly parish newspaper. You can read that issue, here. Ads were solicited to help support the paper, as well as a subscription fee: twenty-five cents for six months. The good response to the paper encouraged payment of a full fifty cents per year in the next issue (even with the ads). A men’s group, The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, undertook the preparation for mailing (folding, addressing, applying stamps) as part of their volunteer duties at the church.

The Messenger publication schedule has, at various times, been monthly, semi-monthly, and weekly over the years, sometimes with summers off, and, given the dates (1899-2016), has apparently been suspended for extended periods of time; one can imagine during rector interims, the Depression, and either or both World Wars. It currently exists as a monthly and in a weekly electronic form, which is probably only slightly faster in delivery than the 1899 postal system depended on by the men’s group.
