New US F3 Series to debut in Virginia. A re-vamped F3 Americas racing series will make its debut April 27th, 2018 at Virginia International Raceway, running on the same weekend with its partner series, the F4 U.S. Championship. The F3 Americas series is seen as the next step up from Formula 4 and will could offer Australian single seater drivers a competitive series in the US racing scene. The series will feature two 30-minute races per weekend with 30-minute, practices, and qualifying sessions. In addition to the debut race at VIR, there will be five race weekends at prestigious tracks around the United States. It will feature an all-new F3-FIA* spec Ligier Crawford JS F3 race car chassis. Compared to the F4 U.S. Championship car, the F3 chassis features more configurable aero components, increased impact safety structures and more sophisticated data acquisition.
Re-vamped F3 Americas car lands in 2018
The F3 Americas car will be powered by a 240 to 270-horsepower Honda Performance Development version of the new Honda Civic® Type-R® turbocharged K20C1 motor (a non-turbocharged version is used in the F4 U.S. Championship). The car will run on proven Pirelli P Zero tyres developed for this series. The original F3 championship was a short-lived being contested in the United States and Canada. Sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America, the series lasted for two seasons, 2000 and 2001.
Winton and Queensland confirmed for co-driver practice. sessions. The important co-driver practice sessions for the PIRTEK Enduro Cup have been confirmed for Winton and Queensland Raceway. Dedicated running at the start of race weekends in recent years has given Supercars co-drivers additional laps before the opening practice session for full-timers. Sessions on the Friday mornings of the Winton SuperSprint on May 18th and the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint on July 20th will take place leading into the Sandown 500 on September 14th-16th, followed by the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and Vodafone Gold Coast 600 in October. Red Bull HRT has signed two-time Le Mans 24 Hour winner Earl Bamber to partner countryman Shane van Gisbergen, while Paul Dumbrell continues with Jamie Whincup. Defending Enduro Cup winner Tickford Racing announced it has picked up former GRM full-timer James Moffat this week alongside Dean Canto and Steve Owen, both entering the second year of two-year deals. Chris Pither rejoins GRM for the enduros, having been one of its Volvo co-drivers in 2015, while Richard Muscat continues after making his debut with Moffat last year. Shell V-Power Racing is, meanwhile, expected to continue with Alex Premat and Tony D’Alberto alongside 2017 championship runner-up Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard respectively.

Five rounds for Kumho Tyre V8 Touring Series. This season will see the Kumho Tyre Australian V8 Touring Car Series supporting four rounds of the Australian Supercars Championship with a fifth round at the Muscle Car Masters round in Sydney. The 2018 calendar includes return visits to four venues that featured in 2017; Phillip Island, Winton, Sydney Motorsport Park and Queensland Raceway. Meanwhile, the grand finale’ will be held at the brandnew Tailem Bend circuit in South Australia alongside the Supercars’ The Bend Supersprint in August. The compact calendar will see one round per month for five months, running from April to late August. Jack Smith sealed his 2017 Kumho Tyre Australian V8 Touring Car Series title with a perfect weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park last year. Tyler Greenbury overhauled Michael Anderson for second in the standings in the final race of the season. The Brad Jones Racing driver ultimately won the championship by 140 points, with Greenbury edging Anderson by just 10 in the final standings. An expanded Endurance Cup, a new circuit and the return of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia are some of the features for the 2018 Porsche Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia. The popular Endurance Cup made its debut last year with three races and 2018 will see this evolve into six 45-minute races. Bathurst and Gold Coast will each feature one Endurance Cup race, as will Hidden Valley Raceway, while Phillip Island will hold two Endurance Cup races. An additional Endurance Cup race will be held at Carrera Cup’s maiden visit to South Australia’s new The Bend Motorsport Park in August. This season will also see the return of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia to Australian shores; the Asian series will once again join Carrera Cup Australia at Sydney Motorsport Park two separate series races and a combined feature race with the Australian series. The eight round series gets underway at the Adelaide 500 at the beginning of March and finishes in October (19th-21st) at the Vodafone Gold Coast 600.

Genuine vs. counterfeit. Busted operation strengthens genuine parts message.
The seizure of over 500 counterfeit filters, illegally branded as Toyota, Lexus & Mobis, in Australia late last year rattled the Automotive industry and general public.
The aftermath of the scam saw efforts by Toyota and Hyundai to protect motorists who had unknowingly fitted the fake filters in their vehicles, by contacting those affected and proposing genuine replacements. Brenton Daniel, a divisional manager of the NSW Motor Traders’ Association warned, “if someone is offering parts at or below half price, alarm bells should be ringing”. The bust is an appeal to all motorists, smash repair and mechanical shops, to be aware and cautious when purchasing parts. The best way to avoid the catastrophic risks associated with purchasing counterfeit parts is to only buy genuine parts from the authorised dealer network.
The undercover investigation, driven by Toyota and Hyundai, put the spotlight on the risk of engine failure to thousands of motorists in Australia. The fake oil filters, sold and bought online by Australian consumers, were almost identical in advertisements, presentation and packaging as their genuine counterparts. The highly sophisticated copies even exhibited internal brand trademarks.

In an interview at 2GB with Joshua Dowling, Motoring Editor at news.com.au, noted “the packaging of the counterfeit parts is so advanced that it makes it hard, even for experts, to tell the real one from the fake”. The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ (FCAI) genuine parts advocacy initiative ‘Genuine is Best’, revealed that expert bench testing conducted in Japan and Korea revealed multiple engineering and design flaws that would inevitably result in damage and failure of the engine, posing a major threat to thousands of engines in popular Toyota, Hyundai and Kia models.

These counterfeit parts were found to be fitted with faulty oil bypass valves, a crucial element of the oil filters that prevents blockage. The valves remained permanently open stopping any engine oil filtration, which would subsequently damage vital internal parts. The physical “irreparable damage” to the affected vehicles would have also come at a financial cost to the car-owner, “costing them thousands of dollars” (up to $10,000) in repair bills says Dowling in his interview, had this issue not been brought to light.

Campbell in for a big year. Porsche driver Matt Campbell is anticipating a big year ahead. Already having competed in January’s Dubai 24 Hour and the Bathurst 12 Hour in February, Campbell won’t be sitting still as he will be travelling the world driving for Porsche customers. Four race wins from 11 races gave Campbell third placing in the 2017 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and this year has become a Porsche Young Professional. The promotion will see him move away from Supercup towards more GT competition. Last year he contested several series, including the FIA World Endurance Championship, Pirelli World Challenge and IMSA SportsCar Championship. Campbell and Norway’s Dennis Olsen will join current Porsche Young Professionals Matteo Cairoli from Italy and Frenchman Mathieu Jaminet in the top tier of the Junior Programme. “I’m really looking forward to taking my career to the next step, moving from Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup into international GT racing as a Porsche Young Professional,” said Campbell.

This year the 26th running of the Australian World Rally Championship event will be staged on the Coffs Coast 15th - 18th November. Rally Australia will be the 13th and final WRC event for the season that started with Rallye Monte-Carlo in January. “It’s great news that fans will be able to watch the fastest and bravest rally drivers in action in a World Championship event here again next year,” commented Rally Australia Chairman Ben Rainsford. “The WRC offers incomparable excitement and drama,” The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport’s (CAMS) Australian Rally Championship (ARC) will expand to six rounds in 2018, with confirmation of the full calendar for next year, including a new event in Tasmania*. The sixth and final round will once again take place at the Rally Australia WRC round in November.

Australian F4 calendar confirmed to include NZ round. The CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship has confirmed a seven round 2018 season that will include supporting the Supercars ITM 400 event at Pukekohe Park Raceway in Auckland, New Zealand. The NZ round in November will be the final round of the series and will be the first time for Formula 4 fans in the country to see the field competing. The opening round will get underway at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains in April before moving on to Phillip Island in June. The Ipswich SuperSprint will mark the halfway point of the year, with the third round to be held in July at Queensland Raceway alongside Supercars. Then it’s onto Winton in Victoria in late August before the final Australian round at the Sydney Motorsport Park in September.

CAMS has recently confirmed the lifespan of the current first-generation Formula 4 car will be extended through to the end of 2023, providing entrants certainty in the formula.

The first event at the new Bend Motorsport Park facility got underway in January with the Revolve24 cycling event at the Tailem Bend venue. The two-day event that included a 24-hour cycle race gave participants and the public an opportunity to view the new parks’ facilities. Motorsport action gets underway in April with the Shannons Nationals 13th - 15th April that includes the second round of the Australian GT Championship and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia. More action will follow a week later with the Two Wheel Championship event 19th - 22nd April. This will see the third round of the Australian Superbike Championship and the second round of the Asian Road Racing Championship take place. August 24th-26th will see a round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. A Supersprint event will take place on 4.95km international circuit featuring 18 turns in what will be a second Supercars event for the State, joining the season opening Adelaide 500.
