Motorsport volunteers exchange programme underway.
The Trans-Tasman female motorsport official exchange programme began over the Bathurst 1000 weekend with Shelly McSaveney from New Zealand heading to the Great Race. The exchange is organised by Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) and their Kiwi counterparts, Women in MotorSport New Zealand (WiMNZ), an advisory group to the sport’s governing body MotorSport New Zealand (MSNZ). The aim is to strengthen motorsport ties across the Tasman, and promote women in motorsport. The exchange enjoys the support of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship (VASC) in providing opportunities at two Supercars events for the exchange participants. A gold level official in NZ (there are only 35 gold officials in NZ) McSaveney was able to experience a variety of roles at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. McSaveney is a member of the Canterbury Car Club and was hosted by WAMS personnel and got to meet a range of people undertaking volunteer official roles during the event. At home she fulfils various roles at the club-run events at Mike Pero Motorsport Park (Ruapuna, Christchurch) including clerk of the course, competitor relations and documentation. The Australian recipient Rebecca Armstrong heads to the Auckland event next month to help out with the ITM Auckland SuperSprint.

Supercars at Bend Motorsport Park confirmed. Still under construction, the Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia has officially confirmed that it will host a round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship on the 24-26 August 2018. A Supersprint event will take place on the 4.95km international circuit featuring 18 turns in what will be a second Supercars event for the state, joining the season opening Adelaide 500. The Bend Motorsport Park is one of the most significant developments in Australian motorsport history and is being constructed at Tailem Bend, 100 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. A state-of-the-art, world-class motorsport facility will host a FIA and FIM licensed circuit along with a drag racing strip and drift racing circuit. In February 2015, Peregrine Corporation lodged plans with the Government of South Australia to redevelop the former Mitsubishi Motors Australia test track at Tailem Bend, South Australia with approval granted in May 2015 and construction commencing in March 2016. The first major event of 2018 will be the Revolve24 Endurance Cycling Challenge on the 13-14 January.

Bates switches to Toyota Yaris Rally car. Emerging rally star Harry Bates is set to take a genuine leap in his competitive career when he campaigns a storming new Yaris in this month’s Rally Australia. Bates, supported by Toyota Genuine Parts, will have the eyes of the rallying world on him when he fires up his turbocharged pocket rocket in the forests around Coffs Harbour. Rally Australia is the last round of this year’s Australian and World Rally Championships, which means Bates will be competing on the same tough gravel roads as rally legends including four-time champion Sébastien Ogier.

Bates will also be aiming to impress another four-time title-holder in Tommi Mäkinen, who heads the Toyota GAZOO World Rally Team which has spearheaded Toyota’s successful return to the premier category of world rallying after a break of 17 years. Competing in Coffs has been the target for Bates and the Neal Bates Motorsport team since a bold decision a little over a year ago to switch from their trusty Genuine Parts S2000 Toyota Corolla to the smaller, lighter yet more powerful
Yaris. Compared with the Corolla that has served them so well, the three-door Yaris is turbocharged instead of naturally aspirated and offers more suspension travel and a lower centre of gravity. Maximum outputs are substantially higher with power up almost 18 per cent to 224kW and torque jumping more than 19 per cent to 420Nm. Bates and co-driver John McCarthy have formed an impressive duo, earning third place in the Australian Rally Championship (ARC) last year. This year, Bates
became the youngest winning driver in ARC history: he took out Victoria’s Eureka Rally in March and followed up with a dominant performance in his “home” rally in Canberra, winning seven of the 13 completed stages. The 22-year-old led this year’s championship going into the second-last event, Rally SA in September, but sacrificed his advantage in the interests of developing the new Yaris. Frustratingly, an electronics gremlin limited him to competing in just one of the forest stages in the Barossa, leaving him with a slim chance of claiming the title in Coffs Harbour.
“Our experience in Rally SA shows the incredible stress that motorsport puts on a car and the importance of having the right parts, which is why I appreciate the on-going support of Toyota Genuine Parts,” he said. “All our testing confirms this is a very fast car with nimble handling, great brakes and fabulous suspension. We’ve fine-tuned the car and I’m really looking forward to having a crack at the biggest event of the year,” he said.
Bates regards his new Yaris as the way of the future, describing the light, nimble and powerful car as “something special”. He and the team at Neal Bates Motorsport have worked incredibly hard to strive for the best possible chance of success at Rally Australia.

Carrera Cup champion & Porsche Top Gun instructor blitz Bathurst 1000. Porsche’s top racers and professional drivers were the standout performers in a treacherous and tricky 2017 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000; with 2007 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia (PCCA) champion David Reynolds and leading Porsche Sport Driving School (PSDS) instructor Luke Youlden taking their maiden Bathurst victory. Former PSDS pilot and current Porsche Carrera Cup driving coach Warren Luff secured second spot on the Bathurst podium, while 2005 PCCA Champion Fabian Coulthard completed the Porsche podium trifecta in third place.
In all, five former PCCA champions raced in the 2017 edition of Australia’s Great Race – Alex Davison (2004), Coulthard (2005), Reynolds (2007), Steven Richards (2014) and Matt Campbell (2016) who finished a strong fifth. A total of 17 former or current Porsche pilots driving in the Great Race.
O’Keeffe completes Junior Programme Shootout. Australian young gun Dylan O’Keeffe was one of nine participants in the two-day Porsche Motorsport Junior Programme Shootout held at the German race circuit, Lausitzring. The winner of the Shootout will receive 225,000 Euro towards a season in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. In addition to this funding, the successful candidate will receive support in areas of driver mentoring, fitness, psychological training and media relations as well as integration into public relations activities. “It was an amazing experience and certainly unique compared to anything I’ve done in my motor racing career so far,” said O’Keeffe. “I was among a great

group of young race drivers and it was amazing to experience the professionalism of Porsche Motorsport and see how it runs such an event. Joining O’Keeffe at the Shootout was the brother of factory Porsche driver Earl Bamber, New Zealander Will Bamber, who competes in Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, along with Julien Andlauer (Porsche Carrera Cup France), Rodrigo Baptista (Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Brasil), Charlie Eastwood (Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain), Jake Eidson (Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA), Philip Morin (Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia) and Riccardo Pera and Alessio Rovera (both Porsche Carrera Cup Italia).
New aero kit for 2018 IndyCar Series. The TransVerizon IndyCar Series engine manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda continued the learning process of working with the new universal aerodynamic body kits that will debut in 2018 with one-day tests at Road America and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, respectively. The tests were the first of the five manufacturer tests that the manufacturers can conduct before the end of the year, although no more than two cars can participate in any test. Private team testing will
begin in January, allowing time for teams to receive the universal kits and attach them to their Dallara IR-12 chassis. Team Chevy’s two-car effort visited Road America with Simon Pagenaud of Team Penske and Spencer Pigot of Ed Carpenter Racing. Meanwhile, Honda’s two teams -- Chip Ganassi Racing and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports -- conducted testing at Mid-Ohio.
Vidau wins Formula Ford title. Max Vidau has clinched the 2017 Australian Formula Ford Series in a tense final round at Phillip Island, with the title not decided until the very last race of the season. Vidau looked set to cruise to victory after entering the weekend 45 points ahead of his nearest rival, Cameron Shields, and increasing his lead to 46 when he picked up a point for qualifying on pole position. Third place in Race 1 behind Shields and Jayden Ojeda saw Vidau’s margin reduced to a still-commanding 40 points, but tensions increased when Vidau was caught up in an incident in Race 2, sustaining damage to his Sonic Motor Racing Mygale and limping to the finish line in a non-scoring 19th position while Shields claimed another race win to close the margin to 20 points. To win the title, Shields needed a first-place finish in Race 3 along with another nil points haul for Vidau; he achieved the first objective, but Vidau executed a classy drive from the rear of the field to third place, scoring the points he needed to wrap up the
championship. The final margin between Vidau and Shields was just 14 points. Vidau becomes the first South Australian to win a national Formula Ford title since Nick Percat in 2009, and also wins entry into December’s prestigious Mazda Road to Indy $200k Scholarship Shootout in America.

Reeves to contest Rally Australia in NZ Mazda AP4. High-ranked Australian driver Brendan Reeves will contest Kennards Hire Rally Australia next month in an AP4-specification Mazda he used recently in the New Zealand Rally Championship. Reeves, from Wedderburn, Victoria, confirmed he will enter the closing event of the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship on 16-19 November in a Mazda2 AP4 run by New Zealand team Force Motorsport. The Australian said he was keen to compare his stage times to those of the regular WRC drivers and hoped to win the trophy for the first Australian finisher on the event. Reeves drove the all-wheel drive Mazda to victory in the Coromandel round of the New Zealand Rally Championship in late August adding to his extensive experience in the WRC and the American, NZ and Australian rally championships. He was the top-seeded national entrant in last year’s WRC field at Rally Australia.
Title out of reach for Martin. Australian single seater driver Anthony Martin driving for Cape Motorsports has fallen just short of winning the 2017 Pro Mazda Championship represented by Cooper Tires. Juncos Racing’s Victor Franzoni dominated the double header finale weekend at Watkins Glen International Raceway winning both Rounds 11 and 12, giving him the necessary points to claim the title. Cape Motorsports enjoyed an incredibly strong season winning five races, 11 podiums and 12 top-five finishes with Martin. The pairing scored the USF2000 title together in 2016 and Martin returned to the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires in 2017 with his Mazda scholarship to take a run at the Pro Mazda crown.

The season wrapped up at Watkins Glen International in New York State, and Martin came home with a second-place finish, narrowly missing the championship by just 18 points. The 22-year-old from Perth was stellar all year long, and was awarded the Rookie of the Year honours, and with that, a brand-new Mazda street vehicle of his choice.
