DEALER PROFILE

Mercedes-Benz Toorak This month we caught up with Andrew Stone, the Parts Manager at Mercedes-Benz Toorak. They have been a participating GetGenuine dealer for 6 years. Tell us about the history of your business Mercedes-Benz Toorak has a rich history, dating back to 1921 after the First World War, Mr. E. J. (Ted) Worrell founded the business in premises beside the Toorak Hotel. In 1932, the Great Depression forced the virtual closure of the business as it was known. Mr. Worrell moved to Carters Avenue to continue servicing local customers’ cars at a site which was previously a stable with a cobblestone floor (now the Mercedes-Benz Toorak showroom). On Friday 12 June 2009, Worrell’s was renamed to MercedesBenz Toorak by President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific. 2012 brought more exciting changes, with Mercedes-Benz Toorak Service & Parts and Pre-Owned vehicle sales moving from Toorak to 29 Madden Grove in Richmond. The move came as a welcome change with the spacious highend facility ensuring our customers receive a service that is second to none.

What is something your business does differently? What is the business working on at the moment… new brands, promotions or upcoming events? We are working on some exciting new offers for our members, and are also excited to announce the Mercedes-Benz Toorak is now an authorised EQC retailer in Victoria. We are currently in full swing, welcoming the all-electric vehicle to the dealership. We are also striving to continually improve, and we welcome your feedback on this.

SHELL V-POWER RACING TEAM ANNOUNCE 2021 DRIVER LINE UP The Shell V-Power Racing Team have announced its 2021 Repco Supercars Championship driver line up with two-time Bathurst Champion Will Davison joining talented young-gun Anton de Pasquale at the Queensland-based squad. Managing Director and Co-owner of the Shell V-Power Racing Team Ryan Story says Davison and De Pasquale are a great pairing and bring a mix of both youth and experience to the organisation. Team Co-owner and Supercars Hall of Famer Dick Johnson said “Will and Anton are great new additions to our team, and I couldn’t be happier. Davison says he is happy to be returning to Dick Johnson Racing.

4

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Championship winning team, and after a strong weekend at Bathurst, I feel I’m well-positioned to have my best season yet. De Pasquale is highly regarded as a star of the future of Supercars after turning heads as a rookie in 2018. He says he is looking forward to progressing his career with the team. “I really enjoyed my time at Erebus, it was like a big family, and I am grateful to them for giving me the opportunity to step up into the main game. “Now, I’m ready to take the next step in my career. I’m excited at the possibilities of what I’ll be able to achieve at the Shell V-Power Racing Team and with Will as my teammate,” said De Pasquale. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

WA RALLY CHAMPS DECIDED Mike Young and Scott Beckwith have clinched their first Western Australian Rally Championship amidst a dramatic year of COVID-19, close finishes and last-minute entries. Heading into the Safari Darling Rally, Young’s absence at the championship’s first event meant he still had to rely on his rivals’ results while also winning the event himself.

Fortunately for Young, however, luck was on his side early in the Jarrahdale event. On the first stage of the event, championship leader, and three-time WA champion, John O’Dowd, crashed out of the event, destroying his Skoda. “It was sad what happened to John, and while it made it easier for me to win the championship, it was pretty nerve racking, as I still had to stay ahead of Ben (Searcy) and finish the event,” Young commented. The Darling Safari Rally is a unique event in the championship, with no ‘pace notes’ allowed, meaning drivers are reacting to the road ahead as they see it, rather than relying on their notes from reconnaissance. It wasn’t all plain sailing, however. “We managed to build a one and half minute gap over the first four stages, which is just as well - we had a small issue in stage five,” he explained. “It was very dusty and I lost where the next corner was and planted a tree stump head-on. “Luckily for Scott and I, the Maximum Motorsport Subaru has got a nice big bar on the front that protects the radiator from any damage. While Young’s 2020 rally season is finished, the Asia Pacific Rally Championship regular will turn his attention to next season’s rally plans, and with his experience growing, he will be looking for another strong and successful season.

DOOHAN TOPS TRIDENT 1-2 IN FINAL POST-SEASON TESTS AT JEREZ Experience paid off for Jack Doohan, as the Australian finished fastest overall in the final 2020 FIA Formula 3 post-season test at Jerez. The Trident racer set the best time during a qualifying simulation in the morning session, lapping at 1:29.041, just 0.0019s faster than his Carlin teammate, Clement Novalak. Jenzer Motorsport’s Calan Williams completed the top three but was nearly three tenths off the rapid Trident pairing. The temperature was once again mild as the cars hit the track in Jerez for the final day of post-season testing this year. Dennis Hauger led the field out of the traps and set the early standard at 1:30.043, during a flurry of early fast laps. Shortly after, a fresh set of tyres were chucked on and Enzo

Fittipaldi replaced the PREMA driver at the top of the timesheets, punching in the fastest time of testing at Jerez so far, lapping at 1:29.675. There were a couple of stoppages around the hour mark as Alessandro Famularo came to a halt at the chicane, before Ollie Caldwell skidded off track at Turn 9. Doohan skipped to the top of the standings when action resumed. The Australian was creeping towards the 1m 29s barrier, beating out Hauger and Caio Collet with a time of 1:29.041. The tests in Jerez conclude the F3 Championship for 2020. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

JAXON EVANS CLINCHES PORSCHE CARRERA CUP FRANCE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE Jaxon Evans has clinched the 2020 Porsche Carrera Cup France Championship with two commanding victories in the final round in Barcelona for BWT Lechner Racing. The 2018 Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup Australia Champion had a fantastic final weekend in the final European race of the season, with two race wins on the Saturday and Sunday, adding the French title to his resume. His efforts also helped BWT Lechner Racing seal the Team championship, while the Kiwi’s Lechner Racing team mate, Nicolas Misslin, defended his title in the Pro-Am class. Evans took the lead directly at the Sunday start from Ayhancan Güven. The race was restarted following more than 15 minutes behind the safety car, due to a first corner

crash. After the restart, Evans pulled a gap over Guven and defended the lead until the chequered flag. On the Saturday, Evan’s celebrated his first victory in this series, after starting from P3 on the grid. “I had a terrible getaway and there was also some chaos in the first corner, so I dropped back to P8. But from then on I had a really good race and could fight my way back through the field.” Team principle Walter Lechner was of course ever so happy with the outcome: “It was a fantastic weekend for our team and it is a great feeling to win all the championships we competed for. Especially as we are newcomers in the French Porsche Carrera Cup, fighting against more experienced competition.” Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

LACK OF COMPONENTS SHUTS DOWN ISUZU D-MAX PRODUCTION Isuzu Ute Australia has sent out a statement advising that production of the MY21 Isuzu D-Max has been temporarily halted for up to three months. Isuzu Ute Australia public relations and sponsorship manager Mark Harman apologised that he was unable to provide specific answers when asked by Auto Media Group when dealers might run out of stock of the D-Max or how many customer orders would be affected by the production halt. Isuzu Ute Australia says a European-based supplier of key components for the Australian-specification D-Max temporarily closed its manufacturing plant due to COVID-19, which means D-Max production will be suspended in Thailand for up to three months. The manufacturer says there will be a tentative recommencement of vehicle production in February 2021. The pause in production is limited to the 21MY Isuzu D-Max

and does not affect the production of the Isuzu MU-X. Isuzu UTE Australia says it apologises for the inconvenience caused and would like to thank its customers for their patience and understanding as it navigates this unprecedented situation. The Mazda BT-50 is built in the same factory as the D-Max but in a statement Mazda Australia says it is still evaluating whether the Isuzu parts supply constraint will interrupt production of its new ute. “However, the launch of the brand new BT-50 is of high priority for Mazda Australia and we have forward ordered supply numbers accordingly. “As such, we remain confident that we will have supply for the foreseeable future and look forward to continuing our campaign to introduce the ute (BT-50) to Australian consumers,” Mazda Australia says. MY21 DISCOVERY OFFERS MORE BANG FOR BUCK

Land Rover Australia says the updated Model Year 2021 (MY21) Land Rover Discovery provides more bang for buck than the predecessor vehicle. For MY21, the seven-seat Discovery will offer new six-cylinder Ingenium petrol and diesel mild hybrid powertrains, Pivi Pro infotainment, software over the air (SOTA) updates, as well as refinements to the exterior and interior. New Discovery introduces two new straight-six Ingenium engines, both petrol and diesel, featuring 48V Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology for enhanced efficiency, performance and smoothness and with a new Intelligent AllWheel Drive system.

The new family of straight-six engines was designed and developed in-house by Land Rover and forms a significant part of the MY21 update. For MY21 Discovery models, the D300 3-Litre turbodiesel provides 221kW (300PS) of power and 650Nm of torque, while the P360 3-litre turbocharged petrol engine provides 265kW (360PS) of power and 500Nm of torque.

engines meet stringent global emissions regulations and deliver improved responses. The system harvests and stores energy generated during deceleration, and redeploys it to assist the engine when accelerating. It also delivers more refined operation of the Stop/Start system. Australian customers receive a high level of specification according to Land Rover and the new MY21 Discovery S D300 has more than $30,000 of additional standard features when compared to the predecessor model, the MY20 Discovery S SDV6. The MY21 Discovery features new LED headlights and tail lights with freshly redesigned front and rear bumpers and Land Rover says the R-Dynamic grade provides a more assertive road presence. Inside the centre console has been enhanced with new second row seats which offer superior comfort, while the new Pivi Pro infotainment features large 11.4-inch HD touchscreen and advanced connectivity with Software-Over-The-Air updates New Cabin Air Ionisation with PM2.5 air filtration* monitors air quality inside and filters harmful particulates, for improved wellbeing says Land Rover.

Land Rover says a new Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system for MY21 Discovery automatically distributes torque to the axle that needs it most.

More family friendly features include a next-generation wearable Activity Key, Click and Go tablet holders for row-two passengers and Intelligent Seat Fold technology.

The D300 features lightweight aluminium construction with a low-friction design and replace the previous SD4 and SDV6 diesels. Intelligent 48V MHEV technology ensures the new

RESEARCH REVEALS YOUNGER BUYERS PREFER CARS NOT SUVS Research has uncovered a new segment of buyers who are younger, have a higher income, are more interested in cars rather than SUVs and are influenced by online resources. Representing more than one-in-ten new buyers in the automotive market, this new group of buyers are more interested in cars (53%) than SUVs (30%) compared to the typical automotive buyer (41% and 45%), showing a major drop in trends compared to the new vehicle industry. Additionally, the new buyer is more likely to travel (if restrictions permit) in search of a good deal; with almost half of buyers admitting they’d travel more than 100kms if the price was right. It is one of the many trends identified in a report called: Connect with the New Digital Car buyer which was commissioned by Autotrader and Gumtree Cars and undertaken by BrandSpark. The report says that 80% of automotive buyers ultimately purchase their next vehicle at the first dealer they visit, and two-thirds (66%) says their purchase is encouraged by an online showroom that provides transparent details including location, branding and hours of operation. It also says third-party classified sits remain the most popular resource for automotive intenders across all segments, being the first step that 69% of buyers take when searching for their next vehicle. The report also says the modern salesperson now requires skills beyond vehicle sales experience to be successful. Interpersonal skills including effective communication, positive attitude and strong listening skills are now almost 30% more valuable than sales experience and vehicle knowledge, because customers still want to see and touch the car.

Autotrader and Gumtree Cars dealer sales director Richard Dicello

“Over the last 12 months, the automotive industry has faced the decline of new car sales and a change in credit conditions which has caused the need to pivot business strategies,” Autotrader and Gumtree Cars dealer sales director Richard Dicello says. “While customers transitioning to an online environment is nothing new, the increased adoption rate and demand for dealerships to meet them online has caused the industry to take note,” Dicello says. One-in-two buyers start their search on vehicle marketplaces and automotive review sites, highlighting the need for dealerships to utilise every channel at their disposal to help maximise exposure. “Over half of vehicle buyers agree that having an online showroom will make them more likely to purchase from a dealer. Even more so for the digital-first buyer segment that we’ve seen emerge in light of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dicello says. “This new group of customers are more knowledgeable and are enjoying the shopping process of searching for their next vehicle purchase, more so than we’ve typically seen in the past. This group is willing to move quicker through the purchasing process in order to get a good deal and unwilling to compromise on quality,” he says. Source: autotalk.com.au

HONDA RESPONDS TO AADA “In March 2020, Honda Australia notified its dealers of plans to restructure its dealer network from 1 July 2021 to optimise the business for long-term success. Honda Australia remains committed to the Australian market,” a Honda Australia spokesperson says. “We are aware that the AADA has made a submission to the Senate Education and Employment References Committee for the inquiry into regulation of the relationship between car manufacturers and car dealers in Australia. “We are also aware that the AADA has appeared before the committee today and made statements in respect to Honda’s restructure.

TEN VOLVO CARS BECOME CRASH TEST DUMMIES Ten brand new Volvo Cars became crash test dummies in their own right as they were dropped multiple times from a crane from a height of more than 30 metres. Before each drop, Volvo Cars safety engineers made exact calculations about how much pressure and force each car needed to be exposed to, in order to reach the desired level of damage. The most extreme crash test yet carried out by the brand was designed to help first responders and extrication specialists prepare for possible scenarios such as a car hitting a truck at high speed or when a car takes a severe hit from the side.

Volvo Cars says in such situations, people inside the car are likely to be in a critical condition. Therefore the priority is to get people out of the car and to a hospital as quickly as possible, using hydraulic rescue tools known in the industry as the ‘jaws of life’. Extrication specialists often talk about the golden hour: they need to release and get a patient to the hospital within one hour after the accident has happened.

Usually, rescue workers get their training vehicles from scrapyards. But these cars are often up to two decades old. And in terms of steel strength, safety cage construction and overall durability, there is a vast difference between modern cars and those built fifteen to twenty years ago. New Volvos are made of some of the hardest steel found in modern cars says the manufacturer.

HAYDEN PADDON REVEALS SPECTACULAR HYUNDAI EV RALLY CAR One of the world’s first EV rally cars, based on the Hyundai Kona, has been revealed by Paddon Rallysport (PRG) at Hyundai Motors New Zealand in Auckland. Kiwi rally star Hayden Paddon led the project to develop the 400+ kW electric-powered rally car, a project sparked by an idea early in 2018 and officially commenced in March 2019. Following 18 months of intensive work at their Cromwell facility in Central Otago, Paddon and his six-strong team of engineers and designers are delighted to reveal the completed, fully functional Hyundai Kona EV rally car to the world. The project marks a significant milestone in automotive and motorsport history, with 80 per cent of the car designed inhouse in terms of chassis design, engineering, aerodynamics, suspension, steering, cooling and electrics. Austrian company Stohl Advanced Research and Development (STARD) contributed to the project as Paddon Rallysport’s technical partner, providing guidance and advice. The design concept for the Paddon Rallysport EV needed to combine performance, range and reliability into one package. The EV rally car needed to be fast and spectacular, as well as capable of competing in a traditional rally format against normal internal combustion engine (ICE) competition. From the outset, it was vital that the EV rally car produced a loud and distinctive sound for the safety – and enjoyment – of marshals, media and spectators out viewing the rally action. The Paddon Rallysport EV rally car features a modernised aero package reminiscent of current World Rally Championship (WRC) cars. When in rally spec, it weighs in at around 1,400kg and has the same suspension travel as a WRC car. Having designed and built a new concept of rally car from scratch, the team is ready for an extensive eight-month development programme to learn and extract the most from the car. PIASTRI “FOCUSED ON HAVING FUN AND DRIVING FAST” DURING F1 TEST DEBUT WITH RENAULT Oscar Piastri has admitted to experiencing one of two nerves ahead of his Formula 1 test debut, as he clambered into the cockpit of Renault’s R.S.18 in Bahrain.. The Renault junior had never previously driven F1 machinery but was handed his debut by the team following his Championship winning season in Formula 3. “I really enjoyed the experience in the R.S.18,” he elated. “It was my first time in a Formula 1 car, so it was very exciting if not a little bit nervewracking at the same time! “Once I did the install lap, all the nerves went away, and I focused on having fun and driving fast. It was a really enjoyable experience and I felt the pace was quite good.” The PREMA driver took to the car on the final day of the test and completed 82 laps, with the aim of helping him to adapt and learn the nuances of the more powerful machinery. Testing a variety of different Pirelli tyre compounds, the Australian ran though multiple stints on varying fuel loads. “I got used to the car pretty quickly and I certainly learnt a lot. I’m looking forward to whenever the next experience may be, so thanks to Renault, both the Academy and the Formula 1 team, for the opportunity.

“I feel very lucky, as not everyone gets to do this and it’s not something you do every day.” Piastri won the F3 Championship on the final round of the season in Mugello, beating out Theo Pourchaire by three points, with a tally of two wins and four further podiums. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

GOVERNMENT EV POLICIES EARN INDUSTRY BRICKBATS AND BOUQUETS The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has applauded the Tasmanian government wanting an all-electric fleet by 2030, but has slammed the NSW government for wanting to implement a road user charge for EVs. “The announcement that the Tasmanian Government plans to transition its fleet to 100% electric vehicles by 2030 shows a forward-thinking government that acknowledges the importance of addressing climate change and improving health outcomes for its people,” FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says. “Tasmania’s unique position with its renewable energy advantage means that the fleet will utilise domestic energy sources and create a more affordable second-hand electric vehicle market that will support the longer-term widespread adoption of low emission vehicles.

“This proposal shows great leadership by the Tasmanian Government and will hopefully inspire some less progressive governments around Australia.” But Weber says a statement by the New South Wales Government announcing a road user charging plan just

24

days after the South Australian Government also announced a similar plan, shows just how out of step parts of Australia are when it comes to climate change. He says the latest announcement by the New South Wales Treasurer showed just how far behind some Australian states are when it came to encouraging environmentally friendly initiatives. “Global automotive companies have invested billions of dollars to develop environmentally friendly vehicles and all around the world progressive governments have supported the introduction of these vehicles,” Weber says “But here in Australia, we inhibit their introduction by levying extra charges on them. It simply beggars belief at this early stage of electric vehicle introduction. The automotive industry notes that excise and the treatment of motorists and their vehicles is a long-term issue. The industry recognises that road user charging is a complex topic that needs to be discussed in a holistic manner and on a national basis. “A sophisticated discussion is required to determine how we encourage the uptake of all low and zero emission vehicles. These vehicles offer economy wide benefits, including improved health outcomes, and will make a major contribution to improving our environmental scorecard for the benefit of future generations,” Weber says. The first year after bushfire:

Why does it feel so hard sometimes? Clinical Psychologist David Younger discusses how people can find it difficult to cope in the 12 months following a bushfire. The Black Summer bushfires of late 2019 and early 2020 had a devastating impact across Australia, with lives lost, homes destroyed and millions of acres burnt. While the initial outpouring of support and media attention kept the fire-affected communities in the public spotlight in the early parts of 2020, this quickly changed as the coronavirus pandemic struck. For many, it has been almost one year since the fires took hold in their communities. According to Clinical Psychologist David Younger, this can be a particularly difficult period.

Stages of stress Survival mode – The sprint Mr Younger mentions that when there has been significant loss (houses, farms, schools), daily life is heavily disrupted, and people are forced to draw on a lot of energy and internal resources. “The longer that goes on, the more tired people feel. Often they don’t realise how much energy they’re drawing on and it’s not until further down the track that they start to notice this tiredness and fatigue.” Mr Younger explains that when reacting to an event like an approaching bushfire, people experience a state of stress known as survival mode – or fight, flight or freeze. This is essentially the body’s internal alarm system. He compares the response to running a 100-metre sprint. “Typically in the moment, the body adapts into a very specialized state, which is designed to endure a physical crisis and to help increase the chance of our survival,” Mr Younger says. “There will be a big dump of adrenalin into the bloodstream, and adrenalin gives us access to instant energy. Our thinking and our concentration become finely tuned and honed. We become focused on the immediate threat only. “All we are aware of at that point in time is doing what needs to be done to get through, to ensure our safety and survival.”

Endurance mode – The marathon Ideally in the aftermath of an experience like this, the body gradually returns to a balanced state in the days or weeks following. However, in the case of bushfires, there is often lasting damage that requires our immediate and ongoing attention. This can range from uncertainty around returning after evacuating and rebuilding homes to euthanising animals and dealing with insurance companies. “Endurance mode, unlike running a sprint, is running the marathon. And in fact, it’s running the marathon, followed by another marathon, followed by another marathon. It’s what enables people to keep going to a job, then come home and work on the property, as well as cooking the kids’ dinner and helping them with their homework,” says Mr Younger. As people’s brain functioning under stress changes, they lose sight of the bigger picture. Doing things to manage their health and wellbeing can often fall by the wayside. The process of recovering from bushfires and the resulting disruption can completely take over a person’s life without them necessarily realising this has happened. “Endurance mode is driven by ongoing access to energy, of which there is only a certain amount. If you don’t stop to rest and recover, one day you will run out of energy and become very, very tired.”
