Photography plays with space and time. Capturing a moment of the present testiies changes for the future. The longest conceivable period of time since the formation of the earth is about four billion years. Much has been in the process of transformation since then. In numerous places of the world reshaping can be recognized. Impressive landscapes with archaic character became national parks. Every year, millions of people stand in amazement in front of the results of natural forces. Fault lines in the earth’s crust have formed the most bizarre formations. Where once there were seas, there are now deserts. Marks in stone are evidence of life long before us.
Photography accomplishes time traveling. Through selection, emphasis and reduction, the photographer creates illusions of timelessness. He manipulates the relation of eternity to our reality. In this way it is possible to look back millions of years. Pictures clarify how it is, how it was and show moments in the slow flow of epochs.
Numerous pictures in this book were taken during solitary hikes. Some, on the other hand, were taken in the com pany of other visitors. By omitting people and signs of civilization, one moves away from the truth and creates a pri meval impression. Subjective relationships between contents, shapes, structures, tonal values, and angles of view visualize the photographer’s own feelings. Patterns in rock formations and dune landscapes encourage abstraction, cancel out proportions, space and time, and become universal. Images are like energetic arrays that force their way into our focus and consciousness. If one encounters visual perceptions with interest and sensitivity, graphics and aesthetics are discovered in seemingly trivial and incidental objects. Pictorial impressions and nuances of light are most easily absorbed when the mind is free of preconceived thoughts and a feeling of calm and timelessness settles inside. This is how images appear that rise above the factor of time. Whether through the recurring sequence of rhythmic changes such as wind and clouds, tides, or through the incessant flow of water or the static persistence of a single stone. One of my favorite areas for artistic landscape photography is found in the Colorado Plateau, in the border region between Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. The land is sparsely populated and it is rich in archaic forma tions. Apart from landscape, little exists. To be away from the tourism stops the time. Everywhere are images that have existed for ages. Just standing in the crater of a volcano, with the smell of sulfur and bubbling water, granted me a more intense sense of the earth’s formation. A requirement of my photographic work is to prove the existence of aesthetics and structure in seemingly chaotic things. These impressions often appear unexpectedly, in different places and on diverse occasions. They are visual experiences, available to anyone willing to look at the world around him with seeing eyes and unbiased mind.

Eines meiner bevorzugten Gebiete für künstlerische Landschaftsfotograie inde ich im Colorado Plateau, im Grenzgebiet zwischen Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado und Utah. Das Land ist dünn besiedelt und es ist reich an archaische Formationen. Außer Landschaft existiert wenig. Abseits vom Tourismus hier unterwegs zu sein, hebt die Zeit auf. Überall sind Bilder, die es seit Ewigkeiten gibt. Nur im Krater eines Vulkans zu stehen, mit Schwefelge ruch und brodelndem Wasser, gewährte mir ein intensiveres Gefühl für die Entstehung der Erde.
Fotograie spielt mit Raum und Zeit. Das Festhalten eines Momentes der Gegenwart bezeugt Veränderung für die Zukunft. Die längste denkbare Zeitperiode seit Entstehung der Erde sind etwa vier Milliarden Jahre. Vieles war seither im Umbruch. An zahlreichen Orten der Welt lassen sich Umgestaltungen erkennen. Eindrucksvolle Landschaften mit archaischem Charakter wurden zu Nationalparks. Millionen Menschen stehen jährlich staunend vor den Resultaten von Naturgewalten. Verwerfungen der Erdhülle bildeten die skurrilsten Formationen. Wo einst Meere waren, sind jetzt Wüsten. Abdrücke in Stein zeugen von Leben lange bevor uns. Fotograie vollbringt Zeitreisen. Durch Auswählen, Hervorheben und Reduktion gestaltet der Fotograf Illusionen von Zeitlosigkeit. Er manipuliert das Verhältnis der Ewigkeit zu unserer Realität. So glückt es, Millionen von Jahren zurückzublicken. Bilder verdeutlichen wie es ist, wie es war und zeigen Momente im langsamen Fluss der Epo Zahlreichechen.
Ein Anspruch an meine photographische Arbeit ist, die Existenz von Ästhetik und Struktur in scheinbar Chaoti schem zu beweisen. Diese Eindrücke tauchen oft unerwarteterweise auf, an verschiedenen Orten und bei vielfäl tigen Gelegenheiten. Es sind visuelle Erlebnisse, verfügbar für jeden, der bereit ist, die Welt um ihn mit sehenden Augen und unbefangenem Geist zu betrachten.

Bilder in diesem Buch entstanden bei einsamen Wanderungen. Manche dagegen wurden inmitten an derer Besuchern aufgenommen. Durch das Weglassen von Menschen und Zivilisationszeichen wird von der Wahr heit abgerückt und der urzeitliche Eindruck geformt. Subjektive Beziehungen zwischen Inhalten, Formen, Struk turen, Tonwerten und Blickwinkel visualisieren eigene Empindungen des Fotografen. Muster in Steinformationen und Dünenlandschaften geben Anreiz für Abstraktion, heben Größenverhältnisse, Raum und Zeit auf und werden so Bilderallgemeingültig.sindwieenergetische
Felder, die sich in unser Blickfeld und in das Bewusstsein drängen. Begegnet man visuellen Wahrnehmungen mit Interesse und Sensibilität, erschließen sich Graphik und Ästhetik in scheinbar ba nalen und nebensächlichen Objekten. Bildhafte Eindrücke und Lichtnuancen lassen sich am leichtesten aufnehmen, wenn der Kopf frei von vorgefertigten Gedanken ist und sich im Inneren ein Gefühl von Ruhe und Zeitlosigkeit einstellt. So entstehen Bilder, die sich über den Umstand Zeit erheben. Sei es durch die immer wiederkehrende Ab folge rhythmischer Veränderungen wie Wind und Wolken, Ebbe und Flut, sei es durch das unaufhörliche Fließen des Wassers oder durch die statische Beharrlichkeit eines einzelnen Steins.

Franz G. Messenbaeck has been working as a professional photographer since 2009. His primary focus is on landscape, art photography and portraiture he does in his studio in Bischofshofen. His trips take him to remote places on earth, where he inds solitary areas and those structures he is looking for to create his artistic images. Impressions full of serenity and tranquility are the basis for his compositions and provide a welcome contrapoint to his surgical activities.
In 2013, Franz G. Messenbaeck gained the prestigious Master QEP (Master Qualiied European Photographer), granted by the Federation of European Professional Photographers (FEP). In 2016, the Federation of Professional Portrait Photographers (bpp) awarded him the quality title Professional Photographer of High Quality (HQbpp).
Franz G. Messenbaeck lives and works as a photographer and surgeon in Bischofshofen, Salzburg. In his opinion, the two professions are complementary. The preciseness of surgical work influences the photographic accuracy, the aesthetic sensibility of photography brings advantages in surgery. He irst discovered his interest in photo graphy at the time of his medical studies in Vienna, he made his irst pictures in the darkroom in 1984. As a great admirer of the American landscape photographers of the 20th century, he soon used a large-format camera for his work. Since 2008, the photographs are taken digitally. Initially, the photographic activity was limited to black and white works, the new approach unlocked the world of color photography for him.
Seit 2009 arbeitet Franz G. Messenbaeck als Berufsfotograf. Sein vorrangiges Interesse gilt dabei der Landschaftsund Kunstfotograie, Porträtfotograie betreibt er in seinem Studio in Bischofshofen. Seine Reisen führen ihn in abgelegene Teile der Erde, wo er einsame Gegenden und jene Strukturen vorindet, die er für seine künstlerische Bildgestaltung sucht. Impressionen voller Ruhe und Ausgeglichenheit sind die Basis für seine Kompositionen und stellen einen willkommenen Kontrapunkt zu seiner chirurgischen Arbeit dar.
Im Jahre 2013 erhielt Franz G. Franz G. Messenbaeck lebt und arbeitet als Fotograf und Chirurg in Bischofshofen, Salzburg. Seiner Ansicht nach ergänzen sich die beiden Professionen. Die Präzision der chirurgischen Arbeit beeinlusst die fototechnische Sorg falt, das ästhetische Empindungsvermögen der Fotograie bringt Vorteile in der Chirurgie. Sein Interesse für Fotoaufnahmen entdeckte er zu der Zeit seines Medizinstudiums in Wien, in der Dunkelkammer fertigte er seine ersten Bilder 1984. Als großer Bewunderer der amerikanischen Landschaftsfotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts setzte er für seine Arbeiten schon bald eine Großformatkamera ein. Von 2008 an erfolgen die Aufnahmen digital. War die fotograische Tätigkeit anfangs auf Schwarz-Weiß-Werke begrenzt, erschloss ihm die neue Arbeitsweise die Welt der Farbfotograie.
