Baby Step Your Way to

Weight Loss success by Columnist Amy Barnes

Do any of the following sentences

sound like you? I’ve tried every diet but I still can’t lose the weight. I will get back into exercise when things are less hectic. I don’t have time to devote to cooking healthy right now. I haven’t worked out in a little while and I don’t know why I’m not more motivated. I exercise all week and then the next week I don’t do anything.

Ugh!

Trust me … I know the obstacles that stand in your way to your health and fitness goals. Lack of time, as well as feeling overwhelmed, stressed, unmotivated or discouraged, are all common feelings in the weight loss battle. Keeping all that in mind, I have the ideal solution for you—baby step it! When you think of where you want to be in terms of total weight loss, dress size, pant size or how you will look on your next tropical vacation, you may feel completely overwhelmed by obtaining that goal. Maybe your vision feels impossible or out of reach. Feeling overwhelmed often causes the mind games to start—why even bother, you think. That’s where baby steps come into play. I want you to try these three tips … a sure way to get rid of the negative self talk and on your way to dropping those unwanted pounds once and for all!

1

The key to overcoming the obstacle of feeling overwhelmed is to make your goal smaller! The 50+ extra pounds didn’t come over night. Don’t expect for them to disappear over night (we wish!) For example, write down a goal each week and then tell someone about it. There is something about accountability that helps you stick to your goals. Don’t think about the looming 30 pounds total and how are you ever going to make that happen. Instead, think about the next three pounds and that’s it. Don’t let your mind go beyond the next three pounds. When you are three pounds down, take time to be happy about it and reward yourself for what you have accomplished, (not with food of course) and then set your next small, immediate goal.

2

Another way to take baby steps is to add a new healthy habit each week. It takes approximately 21 days to form a habit. Try adding just one each week. Too often we try to accomplish everything at the same time. We are only setting ourselves up for failure. Instead, every Sunday, come up with a new, small habit you are going to adopt. That’s about four new habits per month, 48 new healthy habits per year. You can pretty much guarantee those weekly habits will add up to a new improved you! Some small habits you could add include: drinking more water, introducing strength training, or starting a food journal. If you are not a breakfast eater, this is a great start! Or begin eating healthier desserts; contact me for some yummy recipes!! Pack your lunch, not only is this a healthier version than eating out everyday, it will also save you a ton of money. Try a new workout, or up your intensity of your exercise. There are numerous ideas you can try each week. Just remember to keep adding habits—because it’s your efforts each week that will bring out the real change.

3

Lastly, take away a bad habit each week. This one is usually a lot harder than it sounds. What habits can you get rid of? Your health also can be vastly improved by things you stop doing. Eat a little less sugar each week. Can you give up soda? Stop buying foods that tempt you while you are at the store. I always tell my clients that the Keebler Elves don’t magically appear at night and fill your cupboards with those bad temptations. YOU PUT THEM THERE … so STOP buying the temptations, you have already won half the battle! Stop eating directly out of a bag or box. Eliminate a few processed food items from your grocery list. Stop avoiding workouts. Stop having second helpings. Each week, select one thing to stop doing to improve your health. hese three steps can trick you and your body into a healthier lifestyle by slowly introducing T change into your life. Before you know it, you will love the changes you see and feel!

My Soul Started to Whisper –

I Had to Listen by Karlena L. Wallace

Has your soul ever whispered to you? Seriously, I know it sounds crazy—but really, have you listened to the signals your body releases; the markers in your journey, and sometimes even what your business subliminally reveals? There have been times I’ve heeded. There have been times I ignored. Today, I’m making a conscious effort to listen with my eyes wide open. You see, I have heard the can’ts, don’ts, won’ts, maybes, not now, never will, never be, never do— and for the most part, those things didn’t deter me, they simply made me work harder, faster, and more relentlessly. But here’s the problem, life and business became a chore. I would even say that business specifically became somewhat of a burden. I fell into the rat race I vowed to never revisit.

When the whisper came that it was time for my business to shift and my life to follow, I scrutinized reasoning to decipher What? When? Where? Why? How? But almost instantly my mind and body became fatigued. While on my journey to edify, strengthen, and advocate others, it seemed I was losing myself. It was clear I just needed to BE and DO. Be me. Be in the present. Do what matters most (to me). Do what feels soul satisfying. Is your soul sending you all kinds of messages and signals? Are you listening? If not, take a moment to hear and FEEL what’s being conveyed. The results can be liberating!

My soul told me to stop trying to MAKE EVERYTHING HAPPEN and simply claim my position. My soul told me to stop looking at what was HAPPENING AROUND ME and tunnel my vision. My soul told me to stop focusing on PROBABILITY and live with INTENTION. My soul told me sometimes the greater path is DESERTED but not without REWARD.

My soul told me to stop trying to make everything happen and simply claim my position. At this very moment, I’m being reminded that a path of progression and discovery can lead to tranquility and understanding—but only if we accept it as such. Every lesson doesn’t have to be arduous. Every lesson doesn’t have to be painful.

The SWIBA Awards Take Over Atlanta! As expressed by Kemya Scott (@MissKemya via Twitter)

F

rom the very first time I heard Stiletto Woman Media’s CEO Karlena Wallace share her vision for the first live Stiletto Woman in Business Awards (SWIBA); I knew it was going to be stellar! I’m talking since DAY ONE this event was destined to become a life changing experience for anyone that participated and attended. Why was I so tenacious in promoting SWIBA? I knew every female entrepreneur would want to attend this event, whether she knew it or not! The 2012 Stiletto Woman in Business Awards started out as a conference, and became an EXPERIENCE!

A Magnificent Scene to Behold I was filled with pride as I looked out into the audience and observed all these beautiful women that were soaking in all the knowledge from the speakers. You could see the “ooohs” and “ahhhs” and the light bulbs glowing in our brains as the speakers shared their words of wisdom. You could feel the strength and sheer determination of those in the room. There was an electric energy from corner to corner, with a little bit of dancing thrown in, thanks to speaker Kelly Lynn Adams! Speakers Were Power Players There was so much talent coming from the podium, it was undeniable! The speakers shared succinct, vivid accounts of how they made it to where they are today. No sugar-coated glory speeches here, this was all guts! They shared motivational and inspirational success stories, weaved with power tactics that each of us could use to our advantage. We took notes all day long!

Strategic Direction and Solutions Each Q&A session was like an open forum, where you could ask questions and everyone that had something to offer would respond. I mean everyone! We said there would be strategy sessions, and we came up with full-blown strategies for those that said they needed it. Never have I attended an event where the attendees took this much time to give tactical advice to each other. This was business building at its finest! And how could I forget – I have an official print copy of Stiletto Woman Magazine! The Awards – Passion and Triumph Reigned It was quite moving to see the honorees receive their awards and to hear their acceptance speeches. They were so humbled and appreciative of the faith and support from the SWIBA community. The honorees shared their struggles, stories of overcoming doubts, fears, and obstacles—all the things that allowed them to ultimately succeed both personally and professionally. Pride and tears flowed everywhere. Congratulations to the 2012 Stiletto Woman in Business Award Honorees! Empowerment, Strength, and Support We shared struggles and success stories, all in the name of empowerment. And you know what, I’m sure every attendee returned home fired up and ready to conquer the world! There was such a sense of communal empowerment, not only professionally, but on a personal level. Like we participated in something BIG, and we did it together in a supportive environment. Everyone who attended needed to be there. This event was tailor made for all of these women.

It was a conference + awards program + professional development session + personal coaching + networking bonanza + empowering experience all neatly wrapped in the SWIBA brand. It couldn’t have been any better. I am truly honored to have participated in such a ground-breaking conference. Whew, did you get all that? So… who’s joining me at the 2013 SWIBA Awards?! I don’t know when it is or where it is, but I’ll be there! Will you?

STYLE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

Rekha Krishnamurthi Divine NY & Co. // New York, NY www.divineny.com 2 Years in Business

Tell us about your work.

What insight can you give a woman going after her dream?

I am the founder and creative designer behind Divine NY & Co. My mission is to add color to people’s inner and outer world through my passion and love for design, color, texture and prints. I offer online design services for interiors, chic home accessories such as pillows, sari throws and design tips and inspiration through my weekly E-zine and video series, “Live Colorfully. Style Beautifully”.

Be patient and be prepared for challenges! Be receptive to change your business strategy, product or service, as needed. For example I originally wanted to be a fashion designer and started my dream by designing a collection of henna-inspired printed t-shirts. Though I was moderately successful with this, when I tried to expand the line to include more than t-shirts, I faced many roadblocks in production/manufacturing and could not scale it in a way that it would be profitable. So I took a break from my fashion line. Around the same time I moved into my new condo and discovered that my passion for creating home accessories and interior design was far greater than it was for fashion! It hit me that this was a better fit for me and where my talents truly lie.

I launched online design services in 2011, the budget-friendly alternative to a full-service interior design firm. I help clients come up with a design concept for their home virtually via Skype and email. This service is perfect for the customer who has some of their own design ideas but unsure how to put it all together – it serves as a blueprint to help the customer be a designer of their own space. They can then design their space at their leisure – leap when they see sales or when their budget allows it! My line of pillows and sari throws is designed and handcrafted locally in New York City. They are one of a kind and produced in small batches. The collection is made from recycled saris, raw silk and fabric remnants repurposed to create new designs and styles. The saris and fabric remnants we use are carefully cut, creatively arranged and sewn in place to create a stunning pillow or throw. In my efforts to keep production local, I work with the ladies of Wishwas.org, a non-profit organization who help complete the finishing of the designs. What inspires you? My design work is inspired by my love for bright, bold color, abstract patterns and my desire to create something unique for my customers. I’m fascinated by interesting textures that I see in everyday life, from storefront windows, to billboards in Times Square and even subway ads! My South Asian background plays a pivotal role in the patterns and color palettes I select for my designs. Successful women entrepreneurs who have launched businesses based on their passion inspire me. I love reading their stories and learning about how they got there; the obstacles they had to overcome and what strategies they used that worked for them.

Do you have any business strategy advice for new entrepreneurs? 1. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or for everything to be just right – you can get started now. It may be as simple as starting with a blog that shares your passion or just a single product or service. You will learn what works and what doesn’t work and you can tweak your product or service as you go. 2. Don’t view challenges as failures; it forces you to think outside of the box and come up with creative solutions and ideas. 3. Fine-tune your business process as you go in order to be able to sustain growth. Your business process may not be perfect in the beginning and that’s OK. But always be thinking of ways to improve and have solid processes in place. It will be easier to outsource or delegate when you do start to grow. 4. If you are a designer producing a product line – always keep the cost of production in mind. You may have the greatest design idea in the world but if it does not make sense from a cost perspective, you will not be able to produce it. You may have to modify your design or create a new design that fits the budget. 5. Use social media as a way to build your expertise and brand yourself along with your product or services. It’s a free tool – use it effectively!

Danielle Ware After Dark Lingerie & Sexy Apparel Store // Olive Branch, MS www.afterdarklingeriestore.com 1 Year in Business

Tell us about your work. After Dark Lingerie Store is for women who want to feel sexy for their partners and don’t want to break the bank. I offer luxury products for an affordable price. My vendors offer top quality products most within the US. I add a personal touch by hand selecting every item that I offer on my site. I offer style assessment for those women who would like to change their bedroom scene; however, are unsure about how to do it. If my site does not offer the style, color, or size you are looking for that’s when I become your personal shopper and dedicate countless hours identifying how to meet your needs. After Dark has provided personal shopping for males as well. I receive a host of emails from males looking for items to help spice up their bedroom not only for their women but for themselves. What makes my site so special? Women/men are oftentimes bashful about certain products such as adult toys. Therefore, I offer adult toys but not on my site. My customers email me for adult toys. There is no toy I can’t get. I’ve been approached or emailed on numerous occasions asking why I won’t publish them [adult toys] on the site. Initially, that was not the direction of the store. However, after attending The SWIBA Award conference and gaining the feedback of so many customers, this may soon be a possibility. Additionally, doesn’t it feel great to purchase luxury lingerie in the comfort of your own home; gaining the feedback and insight from your mate? Being able to see their observation when looking at certain items that may be appealing to them. I call that relationship therapy and we provide that. My store opens up the lines of communication between you and your mate. What inspires you? My family! These past couple of years has been tough for my family. We have been faced with, at times, unbearable pain.

However, we are still standing strong. What made me take the risk of being a business owner was my own personal struggle with illness. Prior to a life threatening situation I wanted to open a business but was afraid of the risks. However, I felt like God gave me another chance at life. Therefore, I moved forward. What insight can you give a woman going after her dream? Always start with a plan, never go in blindsided. You won’t know all the pros and cons until you take the risk; however, gather some data. Never give up, don’t listen to negative people who tell you it won’t work. Taking risks are all part of being an entrepreneur. You have to be able to step outside your comfort zone. In most cities there are several women stores not enough men stores and definitely not enough relationship enhancer stores. That was my drive! Do you have any business strategy advice for new entrepreneurs? 1. Create a business plan. 2. Network with others to see how they run their business and learn different marketing, advertising and business strategies. 3. Join a business group where you can participate in writing/ networking forums and learn about new services/products being brought to market. 4. Be open to learning new things; even from people you don’t know. You can learn so much from a single conversation. 5. Stay encouraged, stay empowered, and remain positive. A mountain wasn’t built in one day so your business won’t grow in one day either.

seattle news anchor Faces her toughest assignment Yet –

Battling a tumor Interview by Maureen Francisco

I interviewed Kathi Goertzen just five days prior to another operation to remove a brain tumor that she’s been battling for more than a decade. The most recognized anchor in Seattle with 70,000 followers, more than ABC’s Diane Sawyer, says this journey hasn’t been easy, but she won’t let the brain tumor rule her life.

maurEEn FranCisCo: I understand that you didn’t originally set out to be a journalist. You were going to be a veterinarian instead. What made you decide to pursue a career in journalism?

Kathi GoErtZEn: I was going to be a veterinarian until I saw my first dog autopsy. Seeing the fur and intestines in different piles and blood on the floor, I figured it wasn’t for me. I love animals too much. I got into broadcasting when I produced my own radio show on a studentstation. I liked the idea of reaching many people. One thing led to another, and I so enjoyed the job of telling others’ stories that I did it as a profession. I love sharing with others and having a front row seat to history in the making.

mF: You’ve been with the KOMO [News Network] family since 1980. Share with us some of your favorite stories you’ve done. KG: Having that front row seat has been an honor and a privilege and sometimes downright uncomfortable. Traveling has been exciting. I’ve gotten 31

to be live from the Brandenburg Gate, when the Berlin Wall was opening up. That was a moment I won’t soon forget. So were the children who scraped out an existence in the garbage dump in Mexico City. So was the death and funeral of Princess Diana. So were all the political conventions and inaugurations I’ve covered and the politicians I’ve interviewed including presidents and governors and mayors. Thirty years have produced a lot of memories: Bob Woodruff, Ted Koppel, Peter Jennings, Charlie Gibson, Diane Sawyer, Jim Sinegal [Costco’s Co-Founder], Bill Gates, Paul Allen, archbishops, famous televangelists, Donald Trump. I’ve covered a lot of people who’ve inspired me, especially children facing some kind of obstacle. I could go on and on.

MF: You are the face of KOMO. (I remember interning there in the late 1990s, preparing Kathi’s scripts for the 5pm show.) How did you first learn about your tumor? How long did you leave the anchor chair for the first time?

KG: I’ve been told that KOMO runs in my blood! I think it does. I first learned about the brain tumor in 1999. I was losing the hearing in my right ear. I knew something wasn’t right. Eventually the tumor

was found. I was pretty shocked. I think I was gone for a couple months when they initially did surgery. I had trouble swallowing so it was a while before I came back.

“I’ve never felt

alone and am so appreciative of the love and support I’ve gotten.”

MF: The tumor resurfaced in 2005. What were some of your initial thoughts when this happened? KG: My initial thoughts were irritation that this could interfere with my career and life, but I’ve learned that people go through a lot worse than me. I’ve tried a lot of drugs and therapies … some have worked to slow the tumor down. Some haven’t. I’ve had several surgeries, radiation, and chemo and am on a different chemo drug now. It’s a rare form of atypical meningioma, which has popped up in other places in my head. It’s been a battle for a while.

MF: I follow you on Facebook. What has been the reaction of people in social media? KG: I’ve been amazed by the Facebook response and the number of people who follow me there. I’ve never felt alone and am so appreciative of the love and support I’ve gotten from the community.

MF: How has the tumor affected your job? KG: I’ve been out of the anchor chair for over a year. I miss it very much, but KOMO has been very good to me. I have a lot of friends there. They’re like family, really. 32

MF: How has this tumor changed you as a person physically, mentally and emotionally?

KG: Physically I’ve been very affected by the tumor. It’s touched my face and voice. My swallowing, therefore, eating is a challenge. I have a feeding tube and that change has been tough. My head still has a hole in it, so I still have a bandage on there. My balance and vision are also a challenge. Shall I go on? It’s hard not to complain all the time, but that doesn’t help much. Learning how to live with the “new normal” is a little more productive. Emotionally, I have weak moments when I cry for what I miss, but am so blessed, it’s hard to stay down for long. I have a wonderful family and great friends.

me into their living rooms for a long time. I’m not so private that I am going to go down a hole and hide when the going gets tough. We all have challenges in our lives or those we love.

MF: You have two daughters and married to a KOMO employee who was once your photographer. How is your family handling this? KG: My family has been incredible. I’m very lucky to have two beautiful daughters. Alexa and Andrea, who’ve had to learn some of life’s lessons a little early I guess; that has made them have a little more perspective on things. But it’s been tough on them and my husband, Rick. That has been the most difficult part of this journey for me.

MF: What life lesson do you want people to learn as

MF: What made you decide to open your life to the

viewers, showing them the good and the bad days that come with the tumor?

KG: I would only generally remind people to enjoy each moment of each day. We spend a little too much time planning and saying ‘if only’ instead of enjoying each minute.

KG: They have not seen the bad days. Trust me! But I’m only human and we all have those. My life has been pretty open so far, in that people have invited

She has been making things in one form or another since she was a little girl, but it wasn’t until seven years ago that she made it her life. She started Darling to bring smart and beautiful design to small businesses and boutiques. She continues to create branding,

websites, illustrations, and custom invitations for good people all over the world. While she is proud of her creative accomplishments, Hughes is convinced that her best work to date is her family. They live, laugh, and play together in a charming, crooked craftsman in sunny lA.
