Taking a Closer Look at

The passing of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 paved the way to the change in the educational landscape in the Philippines. It created a lot of buzz about the K to 12 program, especially now that the Junior High School completers are about to enter Senior High School. This is also an exciting time for us as we look forward to the fruitful outcome of these revolutionary changes in our education system.
Is K to 12 necessary? Did you know that the Philippines is the last country in Asia and one of the remaining three countries worldwide (the other two are Angola and Djibouti) that still offers 10 years of basic education? Even other ASEAN countries such as Brunei, Malaysia, and Singapore have at least 12 years of basic education. Kindergarten

Since our curriculum is squeezed into 10 years instead of the usual 12 years, it is deemed to be congested and not at par with the rest of the world according to a study conducted by the South East Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) - Innotech. Our students showed poor results in national examinations and, consequently, are more ill-prepared when it comes to higher education or employment. This also puts the Filipino professionals who are interested to work abroad at a slight disadvantage. For instance, when a Filipino engineer who had 10 years

of basic education is pitted against another individual who graduated with 12 years of basic education in a job application, the latter will be prioritized or have a better job offer. That is why the Department of Education (DepEd) made the bold and big move to reform our basic education curriculum with the K to 12 program. The program aims to help the students gain more competencies and be more holistically developed individuals. In this regard, DepEd introduced two more years in the new curriculum and this additional two years is called Senior High School.
Choose your own Track! DepEd will conduct assessments to determine the students’ strengths and interests through aptitude tests, career assessment exams, occupational interest inventory, and career advocacy activities. Choose your own school! In Senior High, you are not required to stay in the school where you completed your Junior High, especially if the track you are interested in is not available in your current school. It’s time to meet new people and make new friends so choose wisely!
So, what are the things that we need to know about Senior High? More than adding years to the students’ schooling, Senior High graduates will now be equipped with 21st century skills since their curriculum will focus on their varied strengths, interests, and the needs of the local industry to prepare them for when they go to college, work or start a business. Its curriculum is designed in such a way that there are core subjects and applied track subjects that students will focus on. The core subjects intend to strengthen areas such as Mathematics, Science, and Language while students will have to choose one from the four available tracks: Academic, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood, Arts and Design, and Sports. Among these tracks, they can further choose the specialization that best suits their personality and their chosen career path.

By introducing the Senior High School program, DepEd hopes to bridge the gap between basic education and higher education, and ultimately equip the students with the necessary knowledge and skills for global employment, entrepreneurship, and college. As one of the first schools to implement the Senior High School program nationwide with a total of 1,577 Senior High School students to date, STI fully supports the vision of DepEd in elevating the quality of our Senior High School graduates and preparing them to be college-ready, job-ready, and life-ready.

Strengths and Interests Each of us have different inclinations to certain fields — something we’re really good at. Naturally, this will help you find an easier way to excel. Your interest, however, will keep you driven because your curiosity about a certain field is endless and you are always eager to learn more. Your skills and interest may not be the same, but they should not go against each other. You can pursue both by choosing a track that matches your strengths with what you want to do. If you have a liking for arts and illustration while possessing great interest in using computers, maybe you are meant to study a field like Multimedia Arts. Discover what kind of education you can benefit from that will suit your skills and interests in order to further hone your potentials.
Do Your Research The track that you will take in Senior High will be your stepping stone to the career or profession that you want to pursue. As such, you have to dig deeper to become sure for yourself that this is precisely what you want to do everyday in your

working life. Should you, for example, choose to work as a Chef* in a restaurant, you will spend 81% of your time standing everyday in your workplace, overseeing and supervising the kitchen and its staff, with 69% frequency of being exposed to burns and cuts, and will also require you to do paperworks for operational and production data. Do you picture yourself dealing with these factors once you enter this profession? If not, what kind of work will best fit you? By anticipating these things, you are giving yourself a good head start and you will consider other possible professions until you find something that is better for you. Personality An individual’s personality is defined by the combination of his or her physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics that is fairly consistent throughout his or her life. An American psychologist named John Holland defined in his “Theory of Career Choice” that one’s personality is a critical factor in choosing a career because he or she will find greater satisfaction in jobs that match
the characteristics they possess. Keep in mind that people who are successful in their careers are usually highly motivated simply because they like what they are doing. If, let’s say, you are the analytical type who likes systematic and logical thinking, and you find yourself comfortable working in front of a computer, you may work well in an I.T. profession. What we normally see as a “job” becomes a “calling” when you find gratification in your profession, and you are more than happy to wake up every morning to go to work. Largest Pioneer in Senior High School in number of schools in 2014
STI takes the lead in the country as one of the pioneer schools to welcome students in its Senior High program in 68 campuses nationwide as early as June 2014. By July 29, 2015, the Department of Education (DepEd) has accredited 77 STI campuses to teach Grades 11 and 12 students. Starting ahead of the pack, STI has opened its doors to Grade 11 students starting with the Information and Communications Technology track, and to date, STI continues to strengthen its Senior High program by ensuring the development of globally competitive graduates who are geared with the right competencies and knowledge for the real world.
A Culture of Excellence The institution is dedicated to train Senior High School students with the same quality of holistic education that it gives to its well-rounded college graduates. From being one of the last three countries in the world with a 10-year basic education, the Philippines’ implementation of the Senior High program now prepares students to be on the same footing with the high school graduates of the world. Learning Beyond the Classroom The Senior High School program strengthens the students’ learning abilities even when they’re not in the campus through the use of eLearning Management System (eLMS). Diner Duties with Max’s Max’s has agreed to integrate their online modules on industry-based practices to the curriculum of STI, thus students from the Hospitality program will have the advantage to be immersed in the actual procedures and techniques on handling restaurant management operations, customer service orientation, cuisine-menu preparations, and other technical skills. Likewise, upon successful completion of their on-the-job training, the students have greater chances to be absorbed by Max’s.
The National Institute of Accounting Technicians (NIAT) is the largest Bookkeeping Institute in the Philippines representing over 30,000 accounting professionals. It is recognized by the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers in UK, Institute of Accounting Technicians in Canada and North America, and the Institute of Certified Management Accountants in Australia.

NIAT-Certified for CAT NIAT has recognized STI’s BS in Accounting Technology (BSAT) program. This recognition allows ongoing STI students and graduates to take the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT®) licensure examinations without attending the nine (9) courses offered by NIAT, which is a requirement for BSAT students and graduates of non-recognized schools.

Learning Opportunities from the UK STI and the British Council’s partnership encompasses a training workshop for STI’s content developers for both tertiary and Senior High School to equip them with skills in improving STI’s Outcome-based Education (OBE) curriculum based on international best practices, and their methods of assessing the students’ OBE performance. OBE is designed to focus on what the students should demonstrate and possess as knowledge, skills, and values after the completion of the course.

Vital contents from SITEL will be integrated into STI’s courseware and curriculum to strengthen the learning of students. Faculty members for Communication Arts subject will engage in a language training while the students will also undergo intensive preparations with employment seminars and mock interviews conducted by SITEL professionals using their language assessment tool.
Amadeus-Certified STI’s Hospitality and Tourism Management faculty members underwent training and certification at the Amadeus Corporate University. In parallel, STI students also experienced extensive hands-on training especially on using the Amadeus System — a computerized travel information and distribution system with information on schedules, availability, fares, ticket reservations and issuance, and other related services.

Microsoft Academy Microsoft will provide STI with modules on Microsoft Phone Application Development, Windows 10, and Microsoft Azure which will be integrated into STI’s courseware for ICT programs. There will also be a training program to STI faculty members and Microsoft Student Partners (MSP). STI, on the other hand, will implement the MSP Program wherein two (2) qualified STI students will be recruited to become Microsoft’s ambassadors in
their schools and MSP advisors will be automatic members of the Microsoft Elite Faculty Program. Additionally, STI faculty members will be able to use the Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA) which will allow them to monitor the students’ performances and access Webinars (web seminars) wherein professionals from Microsoft share their expertise online.

LEARN ANYTIME, STUDY ANYWHERE Learning does not stop once you step out of the classroom. The STI eLearning Management System (eLMS) and apprenticeship program is guided by this belief. The innovative STI eLearning Management System (eLMS) allows students to review on their own time wherever they may be. With an online account, students can access their notes, lectures, handouts, and other multimedia learning materials on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Collaborating with classmates or consulting with teachers are made easier with a touch of a button. No longer bound within the four corners of the classroom, a student can now take their learning with them anywhere they go. Plus, STI Senior High School students will gain valuable job experiences through the work immersion program in hundreds of STI partner companies.

Going Global with TATA
TATA Consultancy Service (TCS) is a global enterprise headquartered in India and part of the TATA Group of Companies that operates over 100 companies across six continents in various business sectors. Some of the known TATA brands are: Jaguar, Taj Hotels, TATA AIG General Insurance, Virgin Mobile India, and satellite TV provider TATA Sky.
This partnership will train students taking business-related courses to take on jobs in the business industry with courses designed by TCS. Thus, the students will serve as TATA’s human capital investment for the future as the courseware itself speeds up the training program. TATA will also conduct a Train the Trainer Program (“TTT Program”) to teach the TCS-Designed Course(s) to select faculty members.
STI-Huawei Innovation Center STI and Huawei is now working together in creating the STI-Huawei Innovation Center for new ICT systems, applications, and products. There will be knowledge sharing since Huawei will provide content from the ICT industry that will be integrated into STI’s courseware and curriculum development for ICT programs. Training sessions will likewise be held for STI’s faculty members and also for the students through internship programs. To support this full partnership, Huawei also grants STI with company certifications and accreditations, and consequently, Huawei equipment and devices will be available for use in STI classrooms and laboratories.

The European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) is a bilateral foreign chamber that promotes European interests in the Philippines as well as Philippine interests in Europe. Under ECCP is another organization that promotes youth empowerment and talent development, and advocates industry-academe partnerships to address mismatch in job skills — the European Innovation, Technology, and Science Center Foundation (EITSC).
Dual Training for Senior High EITSC’s work immersion program will provide training opportunities for STI students to develop their skills as early as Senior High School in the fields of business, production, and services. To ensure smooth transition during the immersion program, STI’s academic curriculum will be aligned with the
industry requirements as developed by EITSC to cultivate the students’ core competencies. Through this program, STI is likewise linked to the 15 member companies of the ECCP that will provide dual training to STI’s Senior High School students.

In view of his exceptional competencies and extensive experiences in the field of IT, Jose Agostinho Salvador or Jojo, as he prefers to be called, is very likely to be tagged as an epitome of success. Through his determination and perseverance, Jojo has definitely made it big in his chosen field here and abroad. He is currently the President and CEO of Fountainhead Technologies, Inc. (FHT). FHT was hailed as Best Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council Awards 2014 and represented the Philippines in the ASEAN Business & Investment Summit 2014 (ABIS) in Myanmar to compete for Best SME among other ASEAN-member nations. Despite all his achievements, Jojo also knows how to value his people as he also becomes their mentor and life coach, and serves as an inspiration for the younger generation.
During the time when everyone was only beginning to explore the world of computers, Raymond was in STI, taking programming courses which he knew would pull him to the top. While the computer industry was still in its early years, Raymond was already building his career in the Information Technology (IT) industry, starting while still in college as a Student Assistant. Raymond then worked as a Computer Laboratory Facilitator after graduating and rose up to a better career with computers at IBM and eventually at another global company, Citi. Advancing from all his hard work, he is now handling the data center of the company for the whole Asia and Europe, and living a thriving life at Singapore. Proud of his lineage, Raymond shared that being hardworking is part of his trait as a Filipino, which also helped pull him up and bring him to where he is now.

Edward Czar Aquino was an outstanding student, a leader, and an active participant in both academic and extra-curricular activities during his college days. He made his family proud when he graduated in 2008 with the second highest Grade Point Average in his class. Demonstrating that an STIer will stop at nothing to reach his goals, Edward became a Registered Nurse in Nevada, New Jersey, and Maryland. He was also certified as a Nursing Instructor which fuelled the jumpstart of his career as an educator in the industry. At present, he is the Founder and CEO of St. Therese Learning Institute, a Nevada Commission on Post-Secondary Education approved nursing assistant training school. He is also the Assistant Director of a five-star Nursing Healthcare Center situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Putting together all his notable deeds, Edward Aquino is not just a kind-hearted nurse but he is also a dedicated teacher.
When Rodhil Sabay enrolled in 2008, he never imagined that it was the start of a great journey. He was the oldest among his classmates. He spent five years working in Manila after his high school graduation to add to his family’s income, support his siblings’ schooling, and save enough money to continue his education. Undeterred by the age gap, Rodhil embraced the role of the reliable kuya of his peers as he pursued his culinary interests and thrived in school. A consistent Dean’s Lister, he even got the chance to compete in STI’s Tagisan ng Talino regional cooking and table setting competitions. He also had extensive training working as an Assistant Chef in the HBA Palace. Now, he is the Junior Sous Chef in a popular fine dining restaurant in Saudi Arabia and Dubai that is renowned for its authentic Middle Eastern cuisine. Truly, it was his devotion to his craft that allowed Rodhil to go and travel far in his career.

STI, one of the largest network of schools in the Philippines, raised the bar in providing equal opportunities in ICT-enhanced learning to Filipino students across the country through its Mobile School (Computer Lab on Wheels) campaign which started in 2007 as part of STI Foundation’s Driving Education Where IT Matters program. The Mobile School is equipped with a state-of-the-art computer laboratory with internet access, multimedia computers, LCD monitors, sound system, and other top-of-the-line computer equipment. Since its launch, the Mobile School has already reached 947 sites and has trained over 120,000 students, employees, and other individuals nationwide. There are now a total of six (6) mobile school buses that reach across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The Department of Education (DepEd) has likewise renewed partnership with the STI Foundation

for its Adopt-A-School program. Through the Mobile School, STI faculty members will teach the students from DepEd-accredited schools in different areas with various computer skills to help broaden their knowledge in the field of ICT. To give recognition to STI’s quest in finding better means to educate more students with pertinent ICTenhanced training, STI was awarded the Public Relations Society of the Philippines’ Award of Excellence at the 45th Anvil Awards. It also received an Award of Merit from The Philippine Quill Awards which is organized by the prestigious recognition body in business communications today, the International Association of Business Communications. The STI Foundation was also granted a registration certificate as an Auxiliary Social Welfare and Development Agency (SWDA) by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
