CELEBRATING THE SONG Songs are the folk-memory of popular music: reassuringly human-sized melodies and lyrics that carry within them the spirit of an age. The subjects might be timeless – sex, love, death and protest – but a song’s power often lies in its particularity, the little details that drink in the flux of everyday life to end up reflecting great events and ideas, from a sea shanty of the Napoleonic wars to Dylan’s ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’. In CELEBRATING THE SONG, a landmark new series for the autumn Contemporary Gigs programme, St George’s links together concerts by some of the pre-eminent songwriters, singers and musicians of our time to present a real in-depth survey of the art and craft of the song. There’s classic rock songs in a debut performance by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson; the peerless, theatrical pop and chanson of the great Marc Almond; an enthralling tribute to the legendary Tom Waits; the eight times Grammynominated singer-songwriter Janis Ian;

and enough folk to float a battleship: the Unthanks with the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band (where a Northumbrian border ballad might lead into an arrangement of Nick Drake’s ‘Riverman’); a 70th birthday tour-date by Swarbrick and Carthy, whose repertoire spans the centuries; and the welcome return of troubadour Ralph McTell. A seasonal celebration by Steeleye Span, and June Tabor’s compelling reunion with rousing acoustic folk-rockers Oysterband complete a very strong strand. We also get to hear the heart-breakingly emotional, anti-apartheid era instrumental songs of the venerable South African jazz pianist (and very occasional singer) Abdullah Ibrahim; the cowboy ballads, country swing and galloping rockabilly of Jools Hollandfavourites Hot Club of Cowtown; and vocal reinventions of jazz and pop standards by Clare Teal and Gretchen Parlato. Taken as a whole, it’s a season to sing about.

HEARING THE SOUND If songs compress human experience, giving us tunes to whistle and a beginning, middle and end, sound can go on and on, stretching out time to lead who knows where. hearing the sound, our autumn Contemporary Gigs programme of instrumental music, focuses on some of the most interesting artists around, in a variety of genres. There’s the young improvising trio Phronesis, described as ‘... the most electrifying experience in British jazz’ by The Daily Telegraph, who are following their album ‘Live’ (voted Disc of the Year by Mojo and Jazzwise) with a programme of new material. In the must-see performance of Mike Oldfield’s minimalist prog-classic ‘Tubular Bells’ presented by Charles Hazlewood and Adrian Utley, with Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory among the band, the familiar themes can suddenly take a beguiling left-turn and go walkabout. The kora inventions of the great African master Toumani Diabate, appearing here with a new trio, confound expectations of conventional in and outpoints by using circular motifs to produce beneficent feelings of entrancement.

ECM star Christian Wallumrød returns with the sextet from his masterly ‘Fabula Suite Lugano’ album, where renaissance music meets ambient Nordic reflections in startlingly beautiful soundscapes whose acoustic purity fits the venue like a glove; the new US queen of jazz singers, Gretchen Parlato, mixes songs with state-of-the-art scat and vocalese; and while Abdullah Ibrahim might play some of the most affecting songs in jazz, his piano technique explores the extreme dynamics of sound, as those stately hymn-book chords start, eventually, to roll out their thunder. We end the season with a real treat: a complete performance of the Miles Davis album ‘Kind of Blue’ (along with other well-known Milesian tunes) by the sextet of Terry Seabrook’s Milestones, with Alan Barnes on sax. DERVLA KIRWAN THE MUSIC OF POETRY

DAVE SWARBRICK / MARTIN CARTHY 70

INSTANT WIT COMEDY IMPROVISATION SHOW

Actress Dervla Kirwan brings her beautiful, softly insistent Irish brogue to a selection of contemporary and classic poems, revealing just why reading aloud, and with engagement, is vital to a real experience and enjoyment of poetry.

The greatest duo in English folk return for a very small and select run of dates to celebrate their joint 70th birthdays. In the 46 years since they first recorded together, Dave Swarbrick and Martin Carthy have become, in the words of The Guardian, ‘heroes of the British folk scene’ and perhaps the best-loved cultural partnership since Morecambe and Wise.

As surreal as they are funny, Instant Wit, Bristol’s ‘fantastic’ (Chortle) improvised comedy wonders, return with their fast-paced, off-the-cuff, laugh-out-loud sketches, songs and general silliness – all of it directed by random prompts from the audience.

A ‘transfixing’ actress (New York Times) in film and theatre, Dublin-born Dervla became a household name for her television roles in ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’, ‘Ballykissangel’ and the Doctor Who Christmas special ‘The Next Doctor’, and, lately, a household voice for her Marks and Spencer ‘not just food’ adverts. poetrycan.co.uk £13 Promoted by The Poetry Can in collaboration with St George’s Bristol. Dervla Kirwan appears subject to theatre and TV engagements. If unable to appear, Poetry Can reserves the right to substitute the reader.

PHRONESIS Led by Danish bassist Jasper Hoiby, Phronesis have been tipped by Jazzwise mag as the most exciting jazz trio since EST. Hoiby’s strong, atmospheric compositions and powerful double bass playing, together with the darting runs of dazzling young pianist Ivo Neame and all-around-the kit drummer Anton Eger, combine to make a sound that’s rich in ensemble grooves as well as individual

solos. As their last, acclaimed album, ‘Alive’, showed, in-concert improvisation is where they excel. This date sees them limbering up for a Barbican support slot to Wayne Shorter, where they will definitely want to be at their best. ‘Precocious compositional strength, engaging grooves, explosive creativity, improv virtuosity to spare … one of the hot UK jazz contenders.’ THE GUARDIAN jasperhoiby.com £13 Promoted by St George’s Bristol.

CHRISTIAN WALLUMRØD ENSEMBLE On their latest album for ECM Records, ‘Fabula Suite Lugano’, the Norwegian pianist / composer Christian Wallumrød and his extraordinary sextet make beautifully detailed and atmospheric music that uses a variety of influences – folk themes, Scarlatti and the baroque, Morton Feldman, contemporary jazz – to create ambient soundscapes that resonate powerfully in the mind of the listener. With an instrumentation that includes violin, Hardanger fiddle and cello alongside trumpet, saxophone, percussion, vibraphone, piano, toy piano and harmonium, the group are unusually versatile. They also specialise in all-acoustic performances where the environment in which they play becomes as important as the compositions. In short, it’s a sound that could have been made for St George’s. ‘Free jazz of quiescent beauty.’ THE INDEPENDENT

MERCY AND GRAND THE TOM WAITS PROJECT ‘I’ve grown up here now all of my life, But I dreamed someday I’d go Where brown-eyed girls, and red guitars, And the naked rivers flow.’ A concert at the musical crossroads, bringing together ten songs by Tom Waits, some Kurt Weill, a sea shanty, a hymn, a couple of instrumental gypsy tangos and a classic Fellini film score. Played by an extraordinarily versatile ‘circus band’ including musical saw, harmonium, clarinets and a trumpet-violin, and with mezzo-soprano Jess Walker at the centre, these songs of love, heartbreak and intoxication are revealed in all their strange beauty. The songs have been arranged by leading British composer Gavin Bryars, musical director Jim Holmes, and maverick violinist Joe Townsend. This concert marks the launch of a CD recording of the material made at the end of 2010 with the blessing of Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan themselves. operanorth.co.uk £20; £17; £13 EATS: CLIFTON SAUSAGE ON-SITE (P25)

TUBULAR BELLS Mike Oldfield’s prog-rock classic from 1973 sold over 2 and a half million copies in the UK alone and stayed in the charts for 279 weeks. It also represented the entry of minimalism or systems music into popular culture, with the opening theme used in the film of ‘The Exorcist’ (and in many films thereafter). Tonight, Charles Hazlewood and Adrian Utley present a new version of this much-loved piece in a wide-ranging programme that touches on a number of key minimalist texts. The players are: Will Gregory on piano, organ and synth-oboe; Charles Hazlewood, organ; Denny Ilett, guitar; Alex Vann, guitar, mandolin, bass; Adrian Utley, guitar and synth bass; Ross Hughes, organ, synth bass and flute, and Alan Elmsley on percussion and tubular bells, with the possibility of additional surprise guests on the night. charleshazlewood.com £16 EATS: CLIFTON SAUSAGE ON-SITE (P25) Promoted by St George’s Bristol.

JANIS IAN A star since her first record, ‘Society’s Child’ – written when she was thirteen, and controversially dealing with a mixedrace romance – was featured on TV by Leonard Bernstein, Janis Ian is one of the USA’s greatest singer-songwriters. Her songs, which span pop, folk, country and jazz, have been covered by Nina Simone, Cher, Roberta Flack and Joan Baez, and she’s recorded a duet with Dolly Parton. The timeless teen-angst classic, ‘At Seventeen’, won Janis a Grammy (she’s been nominated nine times), and the album it came from, ‘Between the Lines’, sold over a million to top the US charts. Since walking away from a CBS contract at the height of her fame, she’s studied acting with Stella Adler, become an activist for gay rights, an author of science fiction and a passionate advocate for folk music. Unsurprisingly, Janis Ian is also a great live performer and this solo show will cover her entire career. janisian.com £25; £21 Promoted by St George’s Bristol.

CONNECTING JAZZ VOICE A MUSIC TALK BY JONATHAN JAMES

GRETCHEN PARLATO

Music educator Jonathan James indulges in some of the most wondrous voices in jazz history, from ‘The Divine One’, Sarah Vaughan, and ‘Lady Ella’ Fitzgerald, through to two stars of today’s jazzvocals galaxy, the whisper-voiced Gretchen Parlato and the triumphantly powerful Clare Teal (Wed 14 Dec). With inspiring archive sound Jonathan uncovers a host of classic performances and asks what is it that makes them special and what do they reveal about the main building blocks of a great jazz vocal technique? Running time: 1 hour / no interval £5 including a complimentary glass of wine voluntary donation does not apply Promoted by St George’s Bristol.

Described by Herbie Hancock as “a singer with a deep, almost magical connection to the music”, Los Angelesborn Gretchen Parlato – winner of the 2004 Thelonious Monk Award for Vocal Jazz – is the hot new star of the US scene. Her innovative re-workings of jazz, bossa nova and pop songs (Stevie Wonder, Mary J Blige, Simply Red), combine exquisite musicality with a sharp sense of communication through her delicately nuanced vocal style. A big hit at last year’s London Jazz Festival, for which she returns this year, and a guest on Esperanza Spalding’s recent Grammywinning album, ‘Chamber Music Society’, Parlato appears tonight with her superb New York quartet, performing songs from her latest release, ‘The Lost and Found’. ‘The most original jazz singer in a generation.’ THE BOSTON GLOBE “Gretchen is true blue.” WAYNE SHORTER gretchenparlato.com £18 Promoted by St George’s Bristol.

CLARE TEAL’S FESTIVE FIESTA Sun 11 Dec 2.30pm matinee / 8pm CHORAL / WORLD MUSIC (VARIOUS) / FOLK / CLASSICAL

THE GASWORKS CHOIR Ali Orbaum and Sarah Pennington directors The richly talented, hugely popular 150-strong Gasworks community choir returns to St George’s with an exciting new repertoire of songs: from inventive arrangements of pop, soul and jazz classics to fresh interpretations of world, classical and contemporary folk. Special guest conductor Sarah Pennington joins co-director Ali Orbaum for an uplifting hour of fabulous music, a rousing demonstration of what massed social singing is all about.

Award-winning singer-songwriter and BBC Radio 2 presenter Clare Teal is without doubt one of the most talented and uniquely exhilarating singers the UK has produced, delivering a jazz and classic-pop repertoire with a distinctive fizz that comes from both technical sophistication and an unequivocal love of the material. Here, Clare brings her hugely warm voice, show-woman extroversion and easy audience rapport to a unique blend of seasonal swing, cheeky Latin grooves and cosy fireside ballads (to add a little romance): a fabulous 1950s themed cocktail party of sounds and songs made famous by the likes of Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. ‘Clare Teal is the real deal.’ THE GUARDIAN

TERRY SEABROOK’S MILESTONES KIND OF BLUE The most celebrated jazz album of all time gets a complete run through by this acclaimed sextet led by pianist Seabrook, and featuring Graeme Flowers on trumpet and the great Alan Barnes on alto sax. Bassist Paul Whitten, tenor saxophonist Ian Price and the legendary British bop drummer Spike Wells (who played with Tubby Hayes, Joe Harriott and Roland Kirk, among many others, and who in the Sixties took lessons from Philly Joe Jones, the drummer with Miles Davis in the period immediately preceding ‘Kind of Blue’) complete a very fine band. As well as ‘Kind of Blue’, whose two sides are split between the show’s two sets, the band plays their ‘Sketches of Miles’ suite and Terry’s arrangements of several other Miles Davis classics. milestonesjazz.co.uk £16 Promoted by St George’s Bristol.
