OZONE: WHAT IS IT?

(O3), one of nature’s basic elements. Ozone—which, simply put, is oxygen plus an extra atom ([O.sub.3] as opposed to [O.sub.2])--is formed when oxygen comes into contact with highly charged electrical energy. Ozone is a very powerful disinfecting and deodorizing gas consisting of oxygen (O2) with an extra oxygen atom attached, therefore becoming ozone (O3). (Such as our sun creating the ozone layer). When ozone does its job, it oxidizes by giving up and attaching its extra oxygen atom to anything that can be oxidized. Once this process occurs, the ozone molecule becomes oxygen (O2). Thus, the only byproduct of ozone is pure oxygen. In fact, ozone reverts to pure oxygen quite rapidly and naturally: The half life of ozone in air is on the order of hours and on the order of minutes when dissolved in water. Additionally, ozone dissolves over 12 times more readily into water than pure oxygen, then reverts to oxygen, providing hundreds of times more dissolved oxygen in your water than could otherwise be possible. This high oxygen content in your water provides many of the benefits made possible with your Clean-O-Tech System.

How the System Works

The ozone gas is routed from the ozone generator to the filter module within your holding tank. The ozone generator plugs into a standard receptacle (120v-60Hz model) or can be used at 220V with an optional electrical adapter. It has an air pump which provides compressed air to the filter unit and the water holding tank. The float system which hangs 4 feet below the water surface on a float system inside your holding tank includes a filter, a lift pipe and a diffuser (bubble maker). The ozone gas is fed to the filter module diffuser, which makes millions of tiny ozone saturated bubbles that rise up the filter module lift pipe, mixing the ozone with the water and drawing water through the filter at the rate of about 10 to 15 gallons per minute. As the ozone saturated bubbles exit the lift pipe, the bubbles rise up through your holding tank water, continuing the ozone/water adsorption process and circulating the contents of your holding tank.

What Does Ozone Do? Destroys bacteria, viruses, mold, and mildew. Oxidizes iron, sulfur, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor). Eliminates oils and other contaminants in water. Keeps water fresh, clean, and clear. Reduces or eliminates the need for chemicals. Ozone is 200 times more powerful than chlorine as an oxidizer of organic contaminants. The system will improve the taste and color of your water. As well as balancing your waters Acid and pH. Ozone kills bacteria up to 3200 times faster than chlorine.

IS OZONE SAFE? When properly installed (a simple task), ozone generators are safe for people and the environment. The only by-product resulting from ozone disinfection is oxygen - there are no chemical byproducts in water sanitized by ozone. It is a naturally-occurring oxidizer for water treatment applications. It is 100% natural and biodegradable.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT INSTALLATION BE DONE BY A PROFESSIONAL

When installing this electrical equipment, basic safety precautions should be followed, including: READ & FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS! Do not breathe the ozone gas that exits the ozone generator for an extended period of time. Do not breathe the accumulated ozone gas within the water holding tank for an extended period oftime. Before working inside tank, turn off ozone generator and fully ventilate tank. Note: Ozone is heavier than air. Ozone Generators: Connect the ozone generator to a properly grounded, grounding type reeptacle only. Do not bury power cord nor allow cord to be in contact with standing water.

WARNING! To reduce the risk of electrical shock, replace power supply cord immediately if it should become damaged. WARNING! To reduce the risk of electrical shock, disconnect power supply before servicing ozone generator. The ozone generator must be mounted vertically. Install this unit in compliance with all national and local codes.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FILTER ASSEMBLY Installing the filter module into the tank: To assemble the filter, first unscrew the 4 wingnuts from the top plate and remove the pleated filter. Discard all of the wrapping from the filter and replace back into the filter housing. Hand tighten the 4 wingnuts. Prepare the filter module for installation into the tank: 1. Feed the diffuser (bubbler) and tubing down into the filter module through the 6” lift pipe to within 2” of the bottom of the paper filter and push the open end of the 10’ section of Tygon tubing onto the barb of the rigid diffuser tube. 2. Attach the two loose ends of the 7’ section of stainless steel chain to the pre-drilled holes at the top of the 6” lift pipe using the bolts, washers and nuts supplied (see Figure A)

Figure A

Prepare the tank for installation of the filter module: Drill a 3/16 inch hole through the manhole flange nearest the center of the tank (12 o’clock position). Insert the provided #8 bolt through the manhole flange from the outside of the manhole and secure in place with the #8 nuts provided. (see Figure B) On the side of the manhole flange, at the 9 o’clock or 3 o’clock position (12 o’clock is the side of the manhole closest to the center of the tank as viewed from the top), drill a 5/16 inch hole through the manhole flange. This is where you insert one end of the 50’ section of black vinyl tubing into the tank. Attach the Tygon tubing from the filter/diffuser to the black vinyl tubing by connecting the tubes with the straight barbed connector. Leave enough tubing so that it will sag prior to attaching to the chain/bolt assembly. Attach the Tygon tubing (10’ section supplied) from inside the manhole flange in the tank and down the chain to the diffuser/filter module. (see Figure C) Install the filter module in the tank: 4

IMPORTANT: THE BOTTOM OF THE FILTER MODULE SHOULD BE AT A MAXIMUM OF 4 FEET BELOW THE WATER LINE. AS THE WATER LOWERS AND RISES THE FLOAT WILL KEEP THE FILTER AT A CONSTANT DEPTH OF 4 FEET CREATING CONSISTENT FLOW THROUGH THE FILTER FOR OPTIMAL WATER FILTRATION. IF THE LEVEL OF THE WATER GETS TOO LOW THE CHAIN WILL NOT ALLOW THE FILTER TO HIT THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK. (SEE FIGURE D)

OZONE GENERATOR AND TUBING INSTALLATION:

For optimal efficiency we recommend the following installation process. These require that you have (or bring) electricity to the tank. Mount the generator to a solid vertical surface (wall, etc.) close to the tank with the 4 screws supplied. If there is no surface to mount it to, you can place (cement) into the ground a 4x4 or 4x6 post and mount to that. Two screws are used to mount the generators top and two screws to mount the bottom write installation date on sticker located on the inside of the generator’s lid. One end of the 50’ roll of black vinyl tubing has a barbed fitting on it, push this into the 1/4” ozone outlet hose that exits the bottom of the ozone generator. Route the 3/16” black vinyl tubing from the ozone generator around and around the fill pipe to the barb at top of tank. If your generator is 120V cord connected, plug the ozone generator into a properly grounded, grounding type receptacle. Use a waterproof receptacle/plug cover if installed outdoors. If your generator is the 230v plug version, using the adapter plug to local and national codes. SOLAR UNITS AVAILABLE. 5

STARTING UP YOUR SYSTEM

Re-check your installation to verify that it is correct. Plug in the ozone generator. You should hear a faint hum - this is the air pump. Turn the adjustment knob to the highest setting (100%). For smaller tanks, set the generator at 50%. Proceed to the tank manhole - you should see a full pattern of bubbles rising up from the filter module. This may take a few seconds to develop since the entire ozone tubing system must be pressurized. Once your holding tank has stabilized, you will start enjoying good water. If you have been living with poor water in your home for some time, it is very likely that your plumbing has accumulated deposits of the contaminants that are now being removed from your water supply such as: Iron: As your pipes are cleaned out, you may notice “spurts” of iron colored water when your taps are first opened. This is especially true for taps that are not used regularly. Cleaning out your toilet tanks will remove any accumulated iron and help eliminate continued toilet staining. Odor/Taste: These problems are similar to iron in that you may notice “spurts” of bad taste or odor when a water tap is first opened. Calcium/Hardness: Your new Clean-O-Tech system, through the use of ozone/polarization technology, will make your water appear softer. Your water will suds and act like soft water without any sodium being added. You may still notice some hard water deposits on your fixtures, but these deposits can be more readily removed because they will not bond strongly. For extreme hard water, you may wish to treat your water with an available water softener.

MAINTENANCE

Regular cleaning of your system's filter and diffuser is important to keep the system operating at peak efficiency.

FILTER CLEANING

IMPORTANT! Leave the ozone generator ON. Proceed to the tank manhole. Leave chain attached to the inside of the manhole cover. Slowly pull the chain attached to the filter module to the surface of the tank water, such that the top of the lift pipe is just below the surface of the water. Remove the 3/16 tubing barb (inside the manhole) to stop the ozone flow to the diffuser. Now pull the entire filter module vertically through the manhole in one smooth motion and hang it on the side of the tank. Do not pull up the filter so fast that turbulence will be created as this will knock excess debris off of the filter. As you pull up on the filter, the lower check valve will open and release the water trapped inside the filter. This creates a slight vacuum inside the filter, thus helping to hold the debris on the pleats in place. Note: Some debris will fall off the filter, but since this is coagulated debris, it will fall rapidly to the bottom of the tank. While the filter assembly is hanging on the outside of the tank, hose down the filter with a stiff water spray, washing from top to bottom and spray all around the filter from side to side for a more thorough cleaning. Check to make sure that there is no debris in the check valve that would prevent sealing. You may wish to purchase an extra filter element and our filters. You can then exchange the filter element on top of tank and always have a back up.

WHEN TO CLEAN THE FILTER

You don’t want to “over clean” your filter. You want to season your filter because a slight dirty filter will actually filter the water better than a brand new one. And will filter out smaller particles after it has been working for a while. Depending on your water conditions and the amount of water being used daily, the time between filter cleanings will vary. When you do clean the filter you need only to hose off the collected debris with a good stream of water from your hose. There is no need to scrub, soak or use any cleaning products. After time the paper filter will become stained and will not become white again. This is normal and will not affect the function of the filter. To determine the cleaning interval for your filter 1. After initial start up, perform the first filter cleaning in 10 to 14 days. If the filter is not “loaded” with particulates, clean again in 30 days. A “loaded” filter is defined as having more than 1/2 of the filter pleat depth filled with particulates. If the filter is not loaded at the 30 day cleaning, you can then set your cleaning schedule to every 60 days. If not loaded in 60 days you can extend the cleaning schedule to every 90 days. In no case should the filter cleaning interval exceed 90 days. 2. If the filters are loaded at the initial 10 to 14 day cleaning, continue cleaning at 2 week intervals until the filters are no longer loaded. This bi-weekly cleaning will be required if your tank has a lot of “growth” or deposits on the tank walls. The Clean-O-Tech water cleaning system will remove this growth off the tank walls and your tank will reach a point of stabilization. Once your tank has stabilized, extend your cleaning interval.

FILTER REPLACEMENT

When the original filter is in need of replacement, you can purchase a 20” pleated filter or 2 10” pleated filters. If using 2 10”, supplied is a soft coupler to place between the filters to seal them together. 6

DIFFUSER CLEANING

The diffuser will become restricted over time due to the ozone precipitating out iron, manganese, calcium, etc., and plating the surface of the diffuser with these contaminants. A plugged diffuser will reduce both the ozone flow and therefore the water flow through the filter, thus impairing the ability of the system to maintain your water quality. A completely plugged diffuser can cause damage to the ozone generator. During the filter cleaning, remove the diffuser. Immerse diffuser with tubing attached in a ¼ gallon jug of swimming pool muriatic acid* for about 30 seconds. Make sure the ozone tubing has been disconnected from the manhole barb fitting as covered under filter cleaning, so no ozone gas is flowing through the diffuser. If ozone gas is flowing through the diffuser, it will keep the acid from cleaning the diffuser pores and create excess acid fumes. Remove the diffuser from the muriatic acid and rinse completely with water. It should become sparkling white. Repeat cleaning procedure if necessary. Replace the diffuser. Slowly lower the filter module into the tank and reconnect the tubing to the 3/16 inch barb fitting. If you have high concentrations of Hydrogen Sulfide in your water (Rotten egg odor) the diffuser may become plugged with sulfur which is not soluble in muriatic acid. If this is the case, first clean the diffuser with muriatic acid as described above. Then rinse the diffuser thoroughly and soak for at least 15 minutes in concentrated chlorine (Bleach) solution and rinse.

* CAUTION! MURIATIC ACID IS CAUSTIC NEEDS TO BE HANDLED CAREFULLY WEAR APPROPRIATE GLOVES AND EYEWEAR. DO NOT BREATHE THE MURIATIC ACID FUMES.

GENERATOR MAINTENANCE The P603 and P303 generators are delivered factory tested, calibrated and adjusted for maximum efficiency and long life. Simple maintenance and appropriate operating conditions are the only requirements to keep the unit functioning within manufacture’s specifications. Performing any other modifications or adjustments to internal components will cause the units to function outside of the manufacture’s specifications, and will cause damage to unit not covered under the terms of the warranty. Frequency Maintenance Every 12 months Disconnect unit from power source. Remove the access cover. Inspect the inside of the generator for dust and moisture. Thoroughly clean and dry the inside of the generator. Replace access cover CORONA DISCHARGE CELL SERVICE The CD-Cell can usually be refurbished should it fail after time. Contact your dealer or Clean-O-Tech for details. In case of catastrophic failure due to electrical/mechanical failure, the cost of a replacement cell is minimal. Electrical failure is usually the result of a mechanical failure. For example, should the cell become plugged with nitric byproducts or should water back into the cell, it could be the cause of catastrophic failure.

CAUTION! NITRIC ACID BUILDS UP INSIDE THE CELL OVERTIME. IT IS CAUSTIC AND WE SUGGEST THAT YOU USE PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES WHEN HANDLING.

TROUBLESHOOTING Basic trouble-shooting of the system is quite simple. A decreased bubble pattern in the tank means there is less ozone flow and therefore less water flow through the filter, with the result being reduced water quality. Reduced or no ozone bubble pattern in tank 1. Diffuser needs cleaning. 2. Check for ozone hose leaks with soapy water. 3. Bad air pump - replace air pump. 4. Crimped ozone tubing. 5. Leaking 6 psi check valve Water conditions were good, but then became worse: 1. Filter needs cleaning. 2. Diffuser needs cleaning. 3. Reduced or no ozone bubbles in tank - see above. 4. Large water usage such as filling swimming pool or irrigation. 5. Check the filter module flapper valve, located on the bottom of the filter module, for foreign objects (leaf, twig, etc.) that may be keeping the HDPE Ball in the check valve from sealing.
