HORTEN’S MIRACULOUS MECHANISMS

Magic, Mystery, and a Very Strange Adventure Lissa Evans 978-1-4027-9806-1 • $14.95 ($17.95 CAN) • Hard • 5 x 7 272 pages • ebook 978-1-4027-9845-0 • $7.99 ($9.99 CAN) Territory: US/CAN • APRIL 2012

Enter a wonderful world filled with magic, mystery, and danger. As if being small and having S. Horten as his name isn’t bad enough, now 10-year-old Stuart is forced to move far away from all his friends. But on his very first day in his new home, Stuart’s swept up in an extraordinary adventure: the quest to find his greatuncle Tony—a famous magician who literally disappeared off the face of the earth—and Tony’s marvelous, long-lost work-shop. Along the way, Stuart reluctantly accepts help from the annoying triplets next door…and encounters trouble from another magician who’s also desperate to get hold of Tony’s treasures.

2

A quirky, smart, charming page-turner, Horten’s Miraculous Mechanisms will enchant young readers—as well as teachers, librarians, and parents. LISSA EVANS , who resides in London with her husband and two daughters, has traveled quite a mysterious path of her own to middlegrade novelist. After a brief career in medicine and an even briefer one in stand-up comedy, Lissa became a comedy producer and spent a decade running a red pencil through other people’s work before eventually beginning to write herself. Lissa has written three adult novels and a picture book. This is her first work of middle-grade fiction.

Don't Copy Me! Jonathan Allen “Don't copy me!” It's a refrain that's well-known to children, parents, and caregivers. Now it's Little Puffin's turn to say the words as three cheeky gull chicks follow him around, imitating his every word and step. And the more the puffin protests, the more the gulls enjoy their silly game. Can Little Puffin find a way to turn his frustration into a clever plan? With his usual wit and flair, author and artist Jonathan Allen turns a simple concept into a wildly entertaining tale. Jonathan Allen has created many wonderful picture books for children, including I'm Not Ready!, The Little Rabbit Who Likes to Say Moo, When the Snow Comes, and a number of stories starring Baby Owl. He lives happily in a quiet village in Cambridgeshire, England, with his wife, children, a dog, a cat, two guinea pigs, several guitars, and three computers.

Kenneth Grahame began writing in 1879 as an escape from the drudgery of his job at the Bank of England. The Wind in the Willows started as a bedtime story for his son Alistair, and Grahame later continued the story in letters to his son. The book was published in 1908 and has never been out of print. Illustrator Robert Ingpen studied illustration and book design at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. In 1986 he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his contribution to children's literature, and he was recently honored with the Membership of the Order of Australia.

WRITE-ON WIPE-OFF LEARNING CARDS: SCHOOL SKILLS

WRITE-ON WIPE-OFF LEARNING CARDS: SHAPES

Practice makes perfect, and with these cards, youngsters will enjoy forming both uppercase and lowercase letters, along with simple three-letter words. As they write, they’ll feel pride in seeing their skills improve—and will begin distinguishing first-letter phonics, too.

Count on learning with flash cards that offer kids a variety of entertaining number-based activities, including coloring and dot-to-dots. Preschoolers will master counting from 1 to 20 as well as writing numerals and number words— so they’ll be ready for their first lessons in math.

Starting preschool is a big step for youngsters—and these cards will set the stage for future success. Children will enjoy going over some basic concepts that are an integral part of the preschool world, such as opposites, same and different, and rhyming words.

Learning shapes is an important— and fun—part of preschool education. These cards will help children become familiar with a range of shapes from the simple (circle, square) to the more complex s(trapezoid, hexagon). Kids will have a great time drawing the shapes and identifying them in everyday objects.
