Art galleries line Davis street opposite the US Custom House

The US Custom House is located on the fringe of the Pearl District which plays host to the First Thursday open gallery night in Portland. Directly across Davis street is block full of art galleries: The Augen, Charles Froelick, and Blue Sky galleries, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Craft. In order to take advantage of this abundance of creative energy an entrance has been located on Davis Street directly across from the galleries. In holding to the design principle of cultural memory the existing fenestration became a point of departure for entrance doors to be located. Stairs would be located on the interior in order to maneuver the 7’2 grade change between the side walk and first floor.
