W elcome , Greetings and welcome to the first glance at Durhams in the Dakotas 2016! Hard to believe this marks 10 years since the idea for the bull sale was hatched in the yards out at Denver. It is humbling to look back and see how far we’ve come, but, not being one to rest on laurels, our work is far from finished. Speaking of work, I think we have a set of bulls and bred heifers that is ready for just that. The bulls have exceeded performance expectations and continue to develop nicely. The bred heifers are a superior group of shorthorn influenced cattle. The bulls are especially unique in that a large percentage are ShorthornPlus. While this is not the entire direction of our program, it is a growing part and speaks to the commitment we have to create cattle that are versatile and suited for various environments and operations. This last year has brought many extremes. Extreme markets, extreme weather, and extreme stress for those in the feeding sector. Know that we understand, relate, and are working diligently to provide a genetic product that removes risk for our producers and gives them the best opportunity to be successful, regardless of their program objectives. How so? We eliminate problems. Hard calving, hard doing, bad footed, bad uddered, bad tempered cattle have no place here. Moderate, easy fleshing, fertile, good footed, calm cattle do. Reacquainting with our commercial bred heifer customers over the last month has been refreshing and encouraging. Despite the market, they have returned to buy bred heifers from us. Why? They calved, milked and raised a good calf, bred back, and look good! Sounds novel but when spending hard earned dollars garnered on thin margins, things need to work. I am pleased to say that our customers are proving our genetics can and do. I really appreciate your taking the time to view our sale offering. If you are able, we welcome your visit to the ranch anytime. We are happy to show you the cow herd, feedlot, bulls and bred heifers. If you are unable to attend the sale, let us or anyone of the sale consultants know how we may be of service. Thank you so much and may you have a most prosperous 2016! DURHAMS FOREVER!

Terms to be announced on or prior to sale day. This high indexing fall bull has been a standout all his days and very worthy of bearing the Lot 1 tag. Overwhelming power and style, so much so that he’s entered “On the Hill” out in Denver. Been a while since we showed one up there...can’t wait to walk him in the Coliseum.

These Navigator sons represent the kind of cattle I think we all want to raise in that they are rugged, sound and three dimensional. They are incredibly consistent in their type and kind with great head shape. Pay attention to our coming sales. The sisters to these bulls are going to be the next great cows at JSF. Speaking of cows, the 12 year old dam of Lot 3 is still going strong, having landed several bulls on ranches, most recently, a full brother to lot 3 was purchased on last years sale by Keri Brummett (Whittle) for the great Whittle Bros herd in Missouri. Lot 4 has 2 half sisters in the herd, both of which landed bulls in the sale group. The dam of lot 5 is goes back to the Marigold Maria cow family and is a half sib to the dam of our herd sire Red Demand.

Yes, the Shorthorns have new EPDs.... By Kris Ringwall, North Dakota State Universtiy Extension Summer is an off time to discuss bull data. However, the American Shorthorn Association’s e-newsletter arrived last week with some good, no great news. In an article, the association says it has released the new “fall multi-breed EPD’s” (expected progeny differences) compiled from the new Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation. I immediately pulled up the Shorthorn website (http://www.shorthorn.org/) to see what was happening. In the article it says, “These EPDs were calculated by the American Simmental Association as part of their multi-breed genetic evaluation. The entire set of EPDs are now on the same ‘base’ as Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh and a growing number of other breeds.” This concept of data sharing or data comingling facilities efficient bull selection and adds a simpler tool to the commercial producer’s toolbox for bull selection. I realize that there is and always will be a certain amount of competitiveness among the beef breeds. Anyone that has been involved in the beef industry will realize that the industry is segmented, so shuffling among those segments is one of the challenges astute beef producers need to master. It may be unfortunate, but one would say such competition keeps the team sharp. To be on the team, there is no room for error. Likewise, with the amount of effort and personal dedication that is needed to produce beef, certainly an individual beef producer has the right to decide in what segment or segments he or she wants to participate. However, producers need to make an effort to understand the entire beef business, not just the chosen segments. The breeds represent various segments of the beef industry and are very effective working units within the cow-calf segment of the industry. In reality, the commercial cow-calf producer knits together the genetics of the beef herd and associated breeding programs that often supplement the marketing aspects of what the producer chooses to sell. Again, this is an individual decision. Regardless of what segment a beef producer may wish to be affiliated with, all cow-calf segments need to focus on producing calves that fit and ultimately serve the segments. These calves form the product and are marketed. Why the smile when the American Shorthorn Association released their new EPD’s? The Dickinson Research Extension Center utilizes several breeds of bulls to produce a product that capitalizes on genetic selection and the benefits of crossbreeding. The center is utilizing Shorthorn genetics, along with Simmental, Red Angus and Gelbvieh. The center utilizes additional breeds, but this particular news event allows the center to better understand how our Shorthorn bull fits with the other three breeds. Historically, the center does a quick check by evaluating EPDs for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), milk, marbling (Marb) and rib-eye area (REA). Bulls that fit the center’s breeding objectives are selected and utilized. Using the older Shorthorn EPD values, bull x4190244 could not be evaluated very effectively, compared with the Simmental, Red Angus and Gelbvieh genetics. The bull’s old values were minus 0.1 for BW, 16 for WW, 30 for YW, 1 for milk, 0.04 for Marb and 0.06 for REA. These values were valuable in purchasing a Shorthorn bull, but left the center with questions on how the bull would do compared with other genetics that the center uses. The new EPD values for bull x4190244 are 1.3 for BW, 60 for WW, 76 for YW, 23 for milk, 0.16 for Marb and 0.07 for REA. The bull ranks in the upper 30 percent or greater in all traits except REA. For REA value, the bull ranks in the upper 40 percent. However, now the center knows how the Shorthorn bulls fit in without having to spend time and money to wait out the long process of progeny testing. The center’s typical Red Angus bulls have an EPD value for WW of 60, Simmental bulls 78, Gelbvieh bulls 62 and now the center’s Shorthorn bulls have a WW of 60. One could list all the traits, but a quick look puts the center’s Red Angus and Simmental bulls with greater YW EPDs and the Shorthorn and Gelbvieh bulls with greater milk EPDs. Data is important in the beef business, so a thank you is in order to the Shorthorn Association for its progressive data move. By expanding effective data usage, commercial beef production benefits. May you find all your ear tags. The following article ran early this fall on the Drovers Cattlenetwork as a part of Kris Ringwall’s Beef Talk series and was reprinted with his permission. We thank want to thank Kris and the staff at the Dickinson Research Center for their use of Shorthorn bulls and confidence in our program.

Another standout in a long line of 68K sons. I couldn’t begin to measure the impact this cow has had on my herd. She is truly foundation. Her sons and daughters continue to outproduce her. This calf is the result of a flush from our great customers Dave & Susan Jordan of 5J Farms in Colorado. I think Stinger could be a flat stealthy show bull and go on to sire some great sons and daughters.

Lots 14-17 are exactly what we hoped for when we used Mr. Right. Solid red, big bodied, big nutted bulls with usefulness. The only thing wrong with 14 is his short ear. 15 has a half brother working at Hart Farms in MO who was a member of our 2015 Champion Pen of 5. 16 has a half brother working for a top commercial customers of ours the Johnson’s from just up the road at Litchville, ND. 17’s half sister brought $4500 on Durham Nation 2014 and went on to have a successful show career. I have turned down large offers on his dam numerous times. He could be the best of all the Mr. Right sons. Have at them. Lastly, special thanks Semex Beef Bull manager Dennis Serhienko for letting us walk Mr. Right. I could never have gone out and bought a bull as good.

Outpost is likely the most massive, three-dimensional bull in the offering. He boasts excellent performance out of his first calf dam and oh the places the places he could go were he polled. I keep picturing the half blood blues this bull could make on a set of smooth made, pretty Angus cows. There are a lot of those around. Not many like this bull to mate them with.

The first Hotwire calf to sell and he is a STUD. One of the high indexing bulls out of a hard working first calf dam, this bull came off the cow looking good and completely blew up when he hit the pen. More than once Joe and I had discussion on moving him in with the Denver group. He’s one that could go back there as a 2 year old and win the deal on the hill. If you take him, let me know, we’ll stay in the yards next year.

This Trio of full brothers all bring something slightly different to the table yet are uniform and possess the qualities one would expect in a set of full brothers. Their dam 114p is fast becoming one of our lead donors. The scale pounder of the group is 110C. He is deep, thick, correct and GOOD. 23 is the more attractive, neater of the 3. 24 has the best head and could be the best one of all in the end. Take your pick. Asterisks gone, old school proven pedigree, incredible dam and sire. I like the odds. All suitable for heifers.

These Sim-Influenced bulls are a special lot. They excel with the extra feedlot performance one would expect from the cattle, all the while possessing improved phenotype and the softness that our Shorthorn cattle possess. Stout cowboy bulls here with the resulting progeny having that shot of Shorthorn that more and more astute commercial cattlemen desire.

PAGE 28 • DURHAMS IN THE DAKOTAS

About the Bulls... These bulls have been raised by good milking, easy fleshing mothers in pastures along the banks of the Sheyenne River Valley system in North Dakota. Starting just east of Cooperstown, ND and running approximately 80 miles South of there to Lisbon, ND, these bulls grow up having to travel for water, forage, and shade. Only the top 25% are retained as bulls. Once weaned, they are fed for optimum, not maximum gain, in large pens we free choice hay, on a 52 mCal ration. This allows the bulls to express their differences genetically but not get overly fat. Once yearling weights and scan data are recorded, the bulls are gradually backed down to a 42 mCal ration prior to turnout and/or delivery.

An Aussie’s Perspective: Hayden Morrow “Jungels is a herd that has gained significant commercial reputation. They are moderate, easy doing cattle that are sound and fertile. Throughout my trip I have been seeing Jungels genetics all over the country so it was good to get to North Dakota to see the herd. The commercial focus of Derek Jungels breeding program is obvious”.
