Iowa Beef Expo Heifer Award

Golden Broom Award Sponsored by Cyclone Trace Cattle Company, John Hagie. Presented to the Top Shorthorn Herdsman selected by the Iowa Shorthorn Association.

The Iowa Beef Breeds Council has started a program in which each breed holding a sale at the Iowa Beef Expo will have the opportunity to present a $500 Iowa Beef Expo Heifer Award sponsored by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council to a junior exhibitor who purchased and exhibited a heifer from their breed sale. Each breed association has been asked to develop their own criteria for this award. Listed below are the two requirements of the Iowa Beef Breeds Council. The Iowa Beef Breeds Council will award $500 to the junior exhibitor of the highest ranking heifer purchased from each breed sale at the 2014 Iowa Beef Expo and exhibited at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. Heifers will be ranked at the discretion of each breed association under the following conditions: 1. The heifer must have been purchased in an Iowa Beef Expo sanctioned sale and exhibited by a junior at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. 2. Only one heifer per breed sale (11 total) will be awarded. Therefore, high and low percentage cattle will be considered for one award. Furthermore, cattle with multiple breed registrations may only be awarded by the breed association which sold those cattle at the 2014 Iowa Beef Expo.

Real time bidding is available via the internet. Live audio and live video will allow buyers to bid on animals just as if they were present at the sale. Buyers must create an account prior to the sale. Go to www.iowabeefexpo.com or to www.LiveAuctions.tv to create an account and register for a buyer number. If you cannot attend the sale because of weather traveling conditions or scheduling conflicts, please use LiveAuctions.TV. The Parade will also be available for your viewing at any time.

2014 Iowa Shorthorn Association Honored Breeder Marlan and Brenda Korthaus Cirlce K Cattle Company Marlan and Brenda (Prim) Korthaus met while they were Junior Shorthorn Members and showing cattle at the North American International Livestock Exposition. Marlan was attending Muscatine Community College at that time and working for Willow Crest Shorthorns, Larry and Karen Reap. Brenda was attending the University of Kentucky and was a volunteer employee of the NAILE. Raised in Eastern Iowa, Marlan is a fourth generation Shorthorn breeder. As a Junior Shorthorn member he not only served on the Iowa Junior Shorthorn Board and served as Vice President. Brenda was reared in Northern Kentucky, a former Kentucky Shorthorn Lassie Queen and Outstanding Junior Shorthorn recipient. They have also served as advisors for the Iowa Junior Shorthorn Association. Brenda and Marlan were married September 12, 1981 and farmed with Marlan’s parent’s Marvella and Wilbert Korthaus until January 1984, when they ventured to Idaho to work for Madera and Emerald G Shorthorn Ranches. Following their dispersal, they worked for Green ridge Shorthorns in Urbana, Missouri for a short time prior to moving to Southern Iowa in June 1986, where they have made their home for the last 27 years. Their two children, Jody and Cody, are 5th generation Shorthorn breeders. They too have been actively involved with the family Shorthorn business, exhibiting their Shorthorns on the county, state and national level. We were very surprised when we received the phone call that we were selected to be the Honored Breeders of the 2014 Iowa Royal Sale. It is an honor we greatly appreciate very much and are so thankful and very bless to have you all to be past of our “Shorthorn Family”.
