INTRODUCTION Stem Cells – Our Internal Repair and Renewal Kit For Life It is extraordinary to think how each of us is created. We start off as a single cell and once the human egg is fertilized the magic begins. While in the womb the cells marshal themselves and embark on a journey for nine months that produce descendant cells that have an huge array of purposes and functions, ranging from bone cells, nerve cells, red and white blood cells, the cells of the eyes, fingernails, various organs, the stomach and skin. The human body is a matrix of cells, in fact 50 to 70 trillion cells. It is therefore vital we nourish and preserve our cells throughout our entire lifetime. Scientists now know that damaged and worn out cells, especially stem cells, open up the pathway for disease, illness and aging. Adult stem cells (defined as “adult” from the moment we are born) are our body’s very own repair and renwal kit that when looked after, serve us well for our entire life. Stem cells maintain, repair and renew many of our body’s components (including tissue, muscle, organs, blood, bone, brain, nerve and tendons). This ebook looks at why adult stem cells are fundamental to your overall health and well being (chapter 3 refers), and what you can do to activate, nourish and preserve your own adult stem cells at a very low cost. I am also going to share with you proven anti-aging, nutritional, healthcare and weight loss strategies that will help you get and stay fit, healthy, youthful, strong and vibrant for many years to come. This ebook is for everyone, no matter what your age (18 to 108 years of age), no matter what your current level of health and fitness (an overweight couch potato or a pro athlete), you can take action today. At no time in history have we seen such colossal advancements being made in the field of biology and regenerative medicine as they are today. This progress is changing the landscape on how healthcare is and will be provided in the future. It is now time for the nutritional industry to catch up. That’s where we come in. Our products and teachings are based on new science. This newfound knowledge is clinically proven and in the last decade it is acknowledged universally by world class scientists. We do what we do because so many health supplements and nutritional industries are beating the same old drum based on what they did 30 years ago. It’s time to move on. You need to be informed of the latest developments. This ebook gives you insights based on the latest developments and you can take advantage now by implementing some very simple lifestyle changes. Lets get started – Here’s a roadmap to good health starting right now. 3

WHAT ARE

ADULT

STEM CELLS? Stem cells are the master cells of the human body. Simply put, they are the building block and foundation from which every organ and tissue in your body is formed. Under the right direction and with the right enablers, adult stem cells have the ability to duplicate and become cells of virtually any organ and tissue of the body. Healthy stem cells are able to repair or replace damaged tissue, muscle, organs, blood and cartilage therefore assisting with the reversal of disease and injuries, improving and maintaining optimal health. Adult stem cells reside in our body from the day we are born. Adult stem cells must not be confused with embryonic stem cells that come from an embryo. More recent medical and technological advancements have enabled scientists to discover a great deal more about stem cells, especially adult stem cells. Until recently, adult stem cells were originally believed to differentiate only into cell types of the particular tissue or organ in which they reside, without the universality, or “pluripotency” of embryonic stem cells, which can develop into any cell type in the body. For example, a hematopoietic (“blood forming”) stem cell found in bone marrow was typically thought to form one of the many types of blood and immune cells, but not to develop into a brain or muscle cell. But research over the past few years has challenged this belief and now proven science shows that, although they are not by definition pluripotent, certain adult stem cells found in particular tissues can differentiate into cell types found in other organs or tissues in a process called transdifferentiation. This means that an adult stem cell found in one tissue has the ability to migrate to a completely different tissue, transdifferentiate, proliferate, and repair damage there – a prominent finding with great promise to treat degenerative diseases, and provide repair, renewal and maintenance of one’s good health for longer periods of time. 6

This new found science is providing hope to millions of people of all ages, ranging from those who are already fit and healthy who want to maintain optimal levels of health and wellbeing, through to those who have a degenerative disease or major health challenge that requires improvement, stabilization and recovery.

NINE HALLMARKS OF AGING

Why Cell Health Is Everything Spanish Scientists conducted a review and in 2013 they released their findings in a pub med paper. Here is an overview of their scientific findings. They found there are nine predominant hallmarks of aging. Of significant relevance, is this scientific research shows almost all the hallmarks of aging have an association at the cellular level. Aging and biology research has experienced unprecedented advancements in recent years, particularly with the discovery that the rate of aging is controlled, at least to some extent by genetic pathways and biochemical processes conserved in evolution. The Review enumerates nine tentative hallmarks that represent common denominators of aging in different organisms, with special emphasis on mammalian aging. Aging is characterized by a progressive loss of physiological integrity, leading to impaired function and increased vulnerability to death. 8

Here are the nine hallmarks of aging, accompanied by explanation notes

1

GENOMIC INSTABILITY

2

TELOMERE ATTRITION

3

EPIGENETIC ALTERATIONS

4

LOSS OF PROTEOSTASIS

Genomic instability refers to the high frequency of mutations within the genome of a cellular lineage. As DNA changes occur, failures accumulate and the DNA becomes less likely to fix itself.

Telomeres are the terminal caps of chromosomes that become shorter as individuals age. The leading hypothesis is that telomere attrition is due to inflammation, exposure to infectious agents, and other types of oxidative stress, which damage telomeres and impair their repair mechanisms.

The term epigenetics refers to heritable changes in gene expression that does not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence; a change in phenotype without a change in genotype.

Proteostasis relates to folding, trafficking and degradation of proteins present within and outside the cell. Changes and accumulation of misfolded proteins is a factor in the aging process and is responsible for the onset of certain diseases (i.e. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and ALS diseases). As many of the diseases associated with protein aggregation increase in frequency with age, it seems cells lose the ability to clear misfolded proteins and they then aggregate over time. Small molecule agents and antioxidants have been shown to reduce protein aggregation. In cell culture systems, resveratrol supplementation produced beneficial results against the accumulation of the amyloid-beta peptide, a main culprit in Alzheimer’s disease.

9

Nine Hallmarks of Aging (continued)

5

DEREGULATED NUTRIENT SENSING

Nutrient sensing is a cell’s ability to recognize and respond to fuel substrates such as glucose. The level and type of fuel that is available to a cell will determine the type of enzymes it needs to express from its genome for utilization. Nutrients are a key regulator of tissue growth. As we age, the body becomes less efficient at absorbing certain nutrients and it automatically takes less nutrients to repair itself. This is why exercise and consuming the right foods at regular intervals is essential. To do this give your body the right nutrients by eating organic, natural foods, ensure you stay hydrated and take quality health supplements. Although scientific evidence shows calorie restriction can increase lifespan, it also shows that calorie restriction for long periods of time is harmful.

6

MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION

Mitochondrial is the enzyme that stimulates the cell to produce more energy and grow, which then increases the metabolic rate. Cells require a lot of energy in order to function correctly. It’s important we provide clean, healthy energy to our cells and not a continuous bunch of high glycemic carbs and trans fats. In his book, Grain Brain, Dr. Perlmutter makes the case that most forms of dementia are a consequence of hyperglycemia, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation set off by excessive consumption of grainbased foods. In his view, almost all grain-based food is “excessive.” The book goes into considerable detail, but Dr. Perlmutter’s message is simple: Brain diseases are largely preventable, and people can greatly minimize their risk by eliminating – or at least greatly reducing – their carbohydrate intake. In August 2013, the FDA responded to the surge of media attention, and issued an official definition of “gluten-free” and they began setting standards for Gluten Free labeling. In 2003, Doctors Baur and Sinclair at the Harvard University discovered resveratrol and found it improved mitochondrial function and protected against metabolic disease. They also found resveratrol increased the lifespan of organisms and animal species by 20-40%. In 2009, Christopher Paul Erdman found that resveratrol enriched mesenchymal stem cells that are traditionally adult stem cells found in the bone marrow. Be sure to take liquid resveratrol via intraoral spray delivery as it is proven to be the most effective route of absorption for humans (250 times more effective in an intraoral spray delivery as this overcomes the “first past effect” that is associated with pills and capsules).

10

Nine Hallmarks of Aging (continued)

7

CELLULAR SENESCENCE

8 LOSS OF PROTEOSTASIS

Cellular senescence is the phenomenon when healthy cells lose their ability to divide or replicate. They reach what is known as the hayflick limit. Adult stem cells are the master cells of the body (that are with us from the day we are born). They are responsible for cellular rejuvenation, tissue and muscle repair and regeneration, and immune response throughout our lifetime. As long as the adult stem cells remain activated and keep dividing they maintain their ability of self-renewal and they continue to keep repairing. However, as we age, the ability of one’s own adult stem cells to divide and self-renew is naturally programmed to occur more slowly, their release rates reduce and they also decrease in number. By 60 years of age, our release rates of adult stem cells have reduced by 50% or more in many cases. Our adult stem cells therefore begin to lose their ability to repair tissues and our immune system becomes compromised, making us more susceptible to illness and disease.

There are consequences associated with the decrease and exhaustion of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), satellite cells, and intestinal epithelial stem cells (IESCs). Altered intercellular communication occurs and this is associated with aging. Dr Burton Feinerman reported in 2009 in the Ethiopian Review, Health News Digest that approaches to treat stem cell aging in organs include (A) stimulate existing stem cells to increase in numbers (B) administer specific lines of stem cells to repair damaged tissue and introduce young healthy cells to the organ. These approaches are now available through stem cell replacement therapy and clinically tested stem cell supplements.

9

ALTERED INTERCELLULAR COMMUNICATION

Intercellular communication relates to the manner in which cells communicate with one another. Cell signaling is part of a complex system of communication that governs basic cellular activities and coordinates cell actions. Cell signaling errors are linked to degenerative and autoimmune diseases. 11

KEY BENEFITS OF STIMULATING YOUR OWN STEM CELLS

In the last five years an abundance of clinical science and research affirms the benefits of activating, maintaining and replenishing one’s own adult stem cells. Our own adult stem cells are the core essence to life and good health, and they provide the platform for many cumulative health benefits. Disease, illness, poor health, obesity and age all result in our adult stem cells diminishing in quality and quantity. It is now possible to stimulate, increase and trigger your adult stem cells. Key benefits of adult stem cell stimulation include: • • • • • • • • • •

treating, healing and repairing existing organs, blood, cartilage, muscle and tissue, extremely important for recovery after surgery, injury and illness. increased energy and endurance* strengthening the immune system* improved mental clarity* rapid recovery after your exercise regime* builds muscle, burns fat and maintains natural weight loss in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise regime* reduces inflammation, extremely important for joint pain relief and joint repair* wound care and renewal* dramatic skin repair, improved complexion, stronger hair and nails* provides detox*

As we age, our own adult stem cells decline rapidly, our immune system weakens and our ability to absorb nutrients through our gastrointestinal tract reduces. The Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray supplement is designed specifically to combat these challenges. Stem Cell Worx contains the greatest number of natural growth and immune factors compared to any other stem cell supplement on the market. This enables natural stem cell activation to be as much as 75% per 6 sprays of formulation (being half the daily dose) at any one time. Clinical data on the ingredients and formulation provides more detail. This information is available on page 19 and also in the Q&A document linked here (http://www.stemcellworx.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Stem-CellWorx-Questions-and-Answers.pdf). It is also referenced at the end of this ebook. 14

HOW YOU CAN STIMULATE YOUR OWN STEM CELLS (and what prevents your stem cells from activating)

Now that we know the benefits of stimulating adult stem cells, here’s a summary of how you can stimulate your own adult stem cells in a healthy way. As reported in the Health Digest you can do this by: • Stimulating your own existing stem cells to increase in numbers. • Administering specific lines of stem cells to repair damaged tissue and introduce young healthy cells to the organs and blood. Here are ways stem cell activation can be done.

A

Undergo Full Stem Cell Replacement Therapy

Undergoing full stem cell replacement therapy (in a medical setting) where a person’s own stem cells or those from a donor are drawn from the blood. The blood is then put into a centrifuge to spin down and separate out the stem cells so they become very concentrated. They are then put back into the body (by injection / intravenous administration) where the stem cells are precisely directed into the actual site of injury or damage where the repair and renewal is needed. This is a very effective form of treatment however it can be very expensive. For this treatment the stem cells are mostly taken from the bone marrow, blood or skin. When a person’s own stem cells are not able to be used, they can be obtained from a donor (often the case for those suffering from a life threatening disease). In the United States of America, many restrictions still apply for full stem cell replacement therapy. In hospitals and clinical studies full adult stem cell therapy can be provided, which is the gold standard. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is provided by many clinicians in the U.S.A. however this is not full adult stem cell therapy. PRP is not nearly as effective as it only uses the plasma and it does not contain the same quality or level of stem cells that is provided with full stem cell replacement therapy. Full adult stem cell therapy is the gold standard. 15

B

Take A Powerful Stem Cell Supplement

Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray is the most powerful stem cell supplement on the market due to: •

its intraoral spray delivery (sprayed under the tongue as this enables up to 95% of its nutrients to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream) whereas pills and capsules provide a much slower and less effective absorption rate as they must go through the entire gastrointestinal tract, only providing a 10% to 20% absorption rate at best.

• its natural growth and immune factors. Stem cells must have growth and immune factors (IGF-1, IGF2 etc) in order to be effectively stimulated and for this activation to be sustained so the stem cells are abundantly released and multiplied. •

its specialized and concentrated protein levels. Certain proteins are extremely important when it comes to stimulating one’s own stem cells. These proteins not only increase the stem cell colonies, they also prolongs the activation period. Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray contains very high levels of concentrated protein, that always tests at a level of more than 55%. In many cases (some batches of Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray) have, when tested have shown protein levels of over 75%.

•

its strict Laboratory testing and quality control practices. The U.S.A. Laboratory that manufactures all Stem Cell Worx products is GMP approved, is a leader in science and manufacturing and holds the leading market position and highest quality standards when it comes to the processing of colostrum.

•

This Laboratory specializes in liquid health supplements and has specialized processes that do not destroy the nutrients in the process including a state of the art spray drying facility that retains the nutrients throughout the manufacturing process. Each batch of ingredient is tested independently when it comes into the Laboratory for purity and quality to ensure it meets all standards and percentages shown in each Certificate of Analysis. The product is then manufactured using state of the art equipment and then retested again before it is released from the Laboratory.

16

HOW YOU CAN STIMULATE YOUR OWN STEM CELLS (Continued)

• If you look at other stem cell supplements out in the market, most are a proprietary blend of vitamins with no growth or immune factors, no specialized proteins and 97% of them are in pill or capsule form. •

Stem Cell Worx contains a very high grade bovine colostrum that contains twenty one times more growth and immune factors than human colostrum. The colostrum in the Stem Cell Worx supplement comes from pasture fed herds that are completely hormone free, and the colostrum has a guaranteed collection period of 12 hours within the cow giving birth. There is always enough colostrum left for the newborn calf. Another important component of the Stem Cell Worx formulation is it stimulates granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GCSF). GCSF boosts the levels of a person’s hematopoietic stem cells which create all blood cells. They are found in the peripheral blood and the bone marrow. Fucoidan (a 95% purity is an other key ingredient in Stem Cell Worx) that increases human CD34+cells which are a subset of adult stem cells and the 98-99% trans-resveratrol increase the mitochondria (the engine of our stem cells) and increases one’s metabolic rate.

•

its pure, natural ingredients. All ingredients in Stem Cell Worx are over 95% purity. Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray contains no fillers and no sweeteners. This formulation is patent protected and trusted and sold by Doctors and Healthcare Professionals all around the world including the U.S.A., the U.K, Australia, India and China.

•

its proven independent clinical studies on humans, undertaken by an independent Scientist, show the Stem Cell Worx formulation increased human hematopoietic (blood stem cells) and mesenchymal stem cells (those found in the bone marrow) by as much as 75% from taking just 36mg of the formulation (being half the standard daily dosage for adults) at the three and four week period when the participants were retested.

• Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are extremely beneficial for bone and tissue repair and renewal. They also reduce inflammation. More information on the individual ingredients in Stem Cell Worx are provided in the next chapter. 17

HOW YOU CAN STIMULATE YOUR OWN STEM CELLS (Continued)

C

Other Methods That Stimulate Adult Stem Cells

Other methods have been found to have some stem cell stimulating properties include: • Consume less sugar. Cut back on sugar especially that found in pasta, white bread, soda drinks, certain juices and sweet fruits. Sugar produces too much insulin production. This is a bad when it comes to one’s own natural stem cell production. •

Reduce your triglycerides. Triglycerides are fat in the blood and are used to provide energy to the body. If you have extra triglycerides, they are stored in different places in case they are needed later. High triglyceride levels have been linked to a greater chance for heart disease. Studies have shown that stem cells grow poorly in patients who have high level of triglycerides.

• Calorie restriction and good nutrition. •

Trauma to the body, especially trauma to the skin and bones naturally triggers the release of bone marrow stem cells (often referred to as mesenchymal stem cells). Stem cells are immediately triggered and they quickly migrate to the injured site where they start their repair and renewal processes.

•

Rejuvenate your cells by growing new mitochondria. You can do this with resveratrol. Although resveratrol is found in very small amounts in red wine, its best source comes from Japanese knotweed. Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray contains a 9899% pure resveratrol that comes from Japanese knotweed.

• Exercise and lift weights. •

Just as healthy lifestyle choices have the ability to help maintain and trigger your healthy stem cells, Scientists also report that negative lifestyle habits have the opposite effect and can greatly suppress your body’s ability to produce and release stem cells. Negative effects include cigarette smoking, lack of sleep, stress, emotional extremes, a lazy lifestyle and poor nutrition.

POWERFUL STEM CELL ACTIVATORS STACKED IN ONE EASY TO SPRAY SUPPLEMENT

The synergistic effect of the pure, natural ingredients in the Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray supplement utilize specific pathways that are absolutely necessary to stimulate adult stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. Combine this with its rapid sublingual delivery is what makes the patent protected Stem Cell Worx formulation so effective. The actual activation of adult stem cells by taking Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray is done through the combination of three key ingredients: •

the abundant number of vital growth factors present in the high grade bovine colostrum that Stem Cell Worx contains (being IGF-1, IGF-2, Transforming GFs A and B, Epidermal-GF, Fibroblast-GF and Platelet-derived GF plus many immune factors including immunoglobulins, peptides, cytokines). It is scientifically proven that growth and immune factors are most effective when absorbed intraorally under the tongue, or intravenously.

• a pure 98% trans-resveratrol (supporting the enrichment and proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells that reside in the bone marrow). •

a 95% fucoidan (increasing the expression of CD34+ cells). Cells expressing CD34 (CD34+cells) are found in the umbilical cord and bone marrow as hematopoietic cells (pertaining to the formation of blood or blood cells). CD34 is an important adhesion molecule that is required to stimulate T cells. T cells belong to a group of white blood cells that play a major role in cell-mediated immunity that protect the body from infection. It is also scientifically proven that fucoidan supports a long-lasting increase in the number of circulating stem cells. 19

POWERFUL STEM CELL ACTIVATORS STACKED IN ONE EASY TO SPRAY SUPPLEMENT (Continued) All product claims are backed by scientific data. The Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray formulation took over four years of research and development. It is backed by leading Regenerative Medicine Doctors and Anti Aging Specialists.

What clinical studies have been done on the Stem Cell Worx formulation? Independent clinical studies have been undertaken on the Stem Cell Worx formulation. This testing was carried out by independent Scientists and Bio-Chemists who have no commercial or financial interest, or association with Stem Cell Worx LLC whatsoever. Research and development on the Stem Cell Worx formulation took four years before Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray was launched into market in late 2011. This study used blood samples from healthy humans. The adult stem cell proliferation percentages were determined by flow cytometry, measured in mgs of the Stem Cell Worx formulation. As this graph demonstrates the Stem Cell Worx formulation produces steady percentages of bone marrow stem cell proliferation with a relatively low dosage of mgs.

20

POWERFUL STEM CELL ACTIVATORS STACKED IN ONE EASY TO SPRAY SUPPLEMENT (Continued) Further independent testing was carried out. These were comparable tests that compared the Stem Cell Worx formulation against a stem cell supplement in capsule form for both G-CSF and IL-6 factors. The test results were as follows: • The Stem Cell Worx formulation had 100% increased activity over the stem cell capsule it was compared with, for G-CSF production. • The Stem Cell Worx formulation had 50% increased activity over the stem cell capsule it was compared with, for IL-6 production. NB. G-CSF is absolutely necessary to stimulate the stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. Most existing stem cell supplements out in the market do not have this ability. G-CSF stands for granulocyte colony stimulating factor. G-CSF is a protein that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more adult stem cells. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a key cytokine produced by monocytes, fibroblasts and endothelial cells. IL-6 is a stimulator of both B and T cell functions, that both perform important biological roles for adult stem cell stimulation. Further studies are outlined on page 8 in the Q&A document linked here: http://www.stemcellworx.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Stem-Cell-WorxQuestions-and-Answers.pdf

What Is Bovine Colostrum?

Colostrum is the pre-milk substance or first lacteal secretion that is produced by all mammalian mothers immediately following the birth of their young. Colostrum is not milk. It is often termed “pre-milk as it is the liquid that is produced prior to transitional and whole milk. Over 80% of the bioactive components of bovine colostrum are produced in the bone marrow and circulatory system. They are then transported through the mammary glands prior to the birth of the newborn. Unlike milk, which is produced almost entirely in the mammary glands, colostrum has a very different protein and nutritional structure to milk. Its nutritional value is far greater than milk, and it is only produced for a short time. Bovine colostrum is available in its best, most purist form within the first 24 hours of the mother giving birth. Between 48-72 hours of giving the birth, the mother produces transitional milk. Then, at the 4-5 day mark it is only wholesome milk that is produced. Colostrum is either yellowish or creamy in color. It is also thicker than milk. Although all mammal mothers produce colostrum immediately after giving birth, not all colostrum is created equal. Bovine colostrum from pasture fed cows is recognized as the highest grade of colostrum available to humans. These must be pasture fed cows that are completely free of artificial hormones, free of antibiotics and pesticides, and of course BSE. Bovine Colostrum from New Zealand is acknowledged throughout the world as being one of the highest grades of purity due to their strict farming practices and green, natural pastures. Many countries have learnt from the farming practices of New Zealand and now also produce extremely high grade, quality bovine colostrum.

22

POWERFUL STEM CELL ACTIVATORS STACKED IN ONE EASY TO SPRAY SUPPLEMENT (Continued) Bovine Colostrum Contains Vital Nutrients Bovine colostrum is an incredible source of vital components and nutrients that provide repair, restoration and regeneration functions throughout the entire body and strengthen the immune system. This is because bovine colostrum contains a high concentration of immune and growth factors, vitamins and minerals along with essential amino acids that are designed by nature to protect the body and transfer immunity and nutrients from the mother to their newborn. High grade bovine colostrum contains over ninety known compounds. Of these, primary components within bovine colostrum include: • immune factors (natural antibodies, immunoglobulins, prolin rich polypeptides, lactoferrin, cytokines, lymphokins, glycoproteins and leucocytes to name just a few) that initiate and prolong adult stem cell activation. • growth factors (including IGF-1, IGF-2, Transforming Growth Factors A and B, Epidermal Growth Factor, Fibroblast Growth Factor, Platelet-derived Growth Factor) that are vital to stimulate growth and help in the regeneration and acceleration of repair and renewal of muscle, skin, collagen, bone, cartilage and nerve tissue. • vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Quality colostrum also contains an extremely high level of protein (over 50%), far greater than milk and also much greater than whey. In addition, high grade colostrum contains virtually no lactose making it suitable for those who are lactose intolerant. When calves are born they have no resistance to airborne diseases. It is therefore vital the newborn calf receives immunity and nutrients from their mother’s colostrum within the first 12 hours of life otherwise there is an extremely high risk the calf will die. The natural antibodies, (especially the high IgG content), vitamins and minerals from bovine colostrum are easily absorbed into the bloodstream immediately after birth. After 24 hours, the efficiency of antibody transfer decreases as the pure colostrum from the cow starts to move into a transitional state, and thereafter (after 72 hours) only milk is produced. The cow produces enough colostrum in its first 12 hours of giving birth that allows for an adequate portion to be collected for human consumption within this timeframe, always allowing for enough colostrum to be left for the newborn calf. The collection of colostrum is a simple and similar process to that of milking that ensures no harm is done to the cow or its calf.

23

POWERFUL STEM CELL ACTIVATORS STACKED IN ONE EASY TO SPRAY SUPPLEMENT (Continued) What Are The Key Benefits? There are over 5000 published pubmed studies that evidence the benefits of bovine colostrum. A summary of clinical studies and scientific research on bovine colostrum is referenced at the end of this article. Human health benefits that are attributed to bovine colostrum include: • cell regeneration and stimulation of adult stem cells (in particular mesenchymal stem cells), due to the abundant growth and immune factors it contains, that are absolutely necessary to initiate and trigger stem cells into the bloodstream and prolong adult stem cell activity. • strengthening of the immune system. • increased energy levels. • improves muscle growth, supports tissue regeneration and repair. • improves digestion, heals and protects the gut wall (significant benefits for those suffering from Leaky Gut Syndrome) and has an association with lower risks of upper respiratory illnesses. • provides anti-inflammatory and joint pain relief. • an increased ability to burn body fat and assist weight loss in conjunction with diet and exercise. • healthy skin, hair and nails. • acceleration of healing after injury, illness and/or surgery and shortens recovery times after exercise. Many of today’s super athletes are turning to bovine colostrum as a means to that coveted edge. Intense physical stress that athletes put on their bodies during training can severely weaken their immune system. The growth and immune factors in bovine colostrum strengthen the immune system, help burn fat and build lean muscle, increase strength and endurance, shorten recovery times and prevent illness after vigorous exercise. For these reasons bovine colostrum has recently been researched as a useful supplement for those serving in the Military. Bovine colostrum is one of the few substances cleared by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC determined colostrum was a super-food, and their ruling provides athletes with a safe, viable and legal alternative to banned substances. What is Resveratrol?

Trans Resveratrol provides significant health benefits and is one of the world’s most exciting anti aging discoveries in the last decade. Resveratrol is a stilbenoid, and a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants when they are under attack. In 2003, Dr. David Sinclair of the Harvard Medical School announced a major scientific breakthrough when he found resveratrol works by entering a cell and activating an enzyme called SIRT1. This enzyme stimulates the growth of new mitochondria (the engines of cells) that increases the metabolic rate, which was found to help slow the aging process. Clinical Studies undertaken at the Harvard Medical School found possible benefits to increased mitochondria are weight reduction, increased exercise endurance and the prevention of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The resveratrol in the Stem Cell Worx Spray comes from Japanese knotweed (Polygonumcuspidatum) root extract and is purified to over 98%. This is an extremely high grade of pure trans resveratrol. Many resveratrol capsules in the market contain 50% or less of low grade resveratrol. Then, at best, with capsules you will only absorb 20% of what mgs are noted on the label.

Science Behind Resveratrol In 2003, Doctors Baur and Sinclair at the Harvard University discovered that Resveratrol increased the lifespan of organisms and animal species by 20-40%. In 2009, Christopher Paul Erdman found that resveratrol enriched Adipose-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells. A study in the September 2010 issue of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reported that resveratrol intake reduced inflammatory and oxidative stress in healthy adults. What is Fucoidan?

Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide that is found primarily in cell walls of several species of brown seaweed. Fucoidan has been studied extensively (with over 700 scientific studies world-wide). It is marketed as a dietary supplement due to its high concentration of antioxidants. The fucoidan used in Stem Cell Worx products is purified to a level of 95%. Fucoidan provides a rich source of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and iodine, along with important vitamins such as Vitamin A, B1, B2, B12, and Vitamin C. Fucoidan: • increases cell regeneration, (in particular mesenchymal stem cells and CD34+cells). Not only is fucoidan highly effective in mobilizing stem cells into the peripheral circulation it also increases the number of stem cells, blood cells and SDF-1 level in plasma (Sweeney et al., 2000 and Fermas et al., 2008). • sustains the period of stem cell stimulation for long periods. • assists the body in the production of interferon-Y and interleukin-12, while supporting respiratory functions. • The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center found fucoidan acts to block cancer cells from developing and growing through a process called apoptosis. • provides anti-coagulant effects (anti-clotting of blood). • enhances skin and cellular maintenance.

Science Behind Fucoidan In 2007, a clinical study by Mohammad R. Irhimeh, Discipline of Medicine, Hobart, Australia found oral fucoidan ingestion increased the expression of CXCR4 on human CD34+ cells. This was a significant finding as the transplantation of hematopoietic progenitor stem cells (HPC) is an important treatment modality for a variety of neoplastic diseases. HOW ADULT STEM CELLS ARE IMPACTING AND SAVING LIVES On July 10, 2015, David Prentice, a member of the advisory board of the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center provided an overview of several breakthroughs in the use of adult stems cells to an audience at the National Right to Life Convention in New Orleans. He provided almost a dozen examples in his presentation on “Adult Stem Cells: Saving Lives Now” and included photos of some of those who have benefited from such protocols. Prentice is vice president and research director for the Washington-based Charlotte Lozier Institute. Here are cases he highlighted in his address: 1. A woman grew an entirely new bladder made from her own adult stem cells. 2. A woman initially told by her doctors that she would have to have her leg amputated kept the leg after her own bone marrow was enlisted to grow new blood vessels in the diseased limb. 3. A man who lost part of his jaw to cancer regrew his jawbone, has no lingering signs of disfigurement and was able to eat his first solid meal in nine years. 4. A young girl with a perpetual “soft spot” on her head successfully grew bone over the spot, thanks to adult stem cells taken from her own fat tissue. 5. Damaged corneal tissue has been successfully regenerated, restoring vision. 30

HOW ADULT STEM CELLS ARE IMPACTING AND SAVING LIVES (Continued)

6. In one published case, a man with Parkinson’s disease was treated with adult stem cells taken from his own brain and has had no symptoms of the disease for five years. 7. Genetic skin diseases also are being treated successfully. One new technique involves the spraying of adult stem cells onto third-degree burns to generate fresh skin growth in half the time of a traditional skin graft. 8. Paralyzed individuals and stroke patients have seen improvements in mobility after being treated with stem cells from their nasal tissue. 9. Promising trials are taking place in the treatment of juvenile diabetes. In one current trial, 21 out of 24 patients are in total remission. 10. A man suffering from multiple sclerosis has had no symptoms of the disease nine years after receiving adult stem cell therapy. One ongoing trial involves 500 MS patients, Prentice said. 11. Procedures already successfully treating children for sickle cell anemia, using stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood, are now seeing fledgling success in adults. “I’ve seen, for sickle cell, that ‘C word’ — cure — used (when referring to) adult stem cells,” Prentice said. More than 70,000 patients throughout the world are receiving adult stem-cell transplants annually, with an estimated 1 million total patients treated to date, he said. In the articles and videos shown in the next few pages, we provide stories from a variety of people who have received remarkable results for disease, illness and injury, since undergoing adult stem cell treatment. Also refer to page 39 for Why Athletes Are Turning To Stem Cells.

Further Case Studies With Video Links Further case studies are outlined in succeeding pages. These show remarkable results for those who underwent adult stem cell therapy in a medical setting. These case studies contain links to videos. 31

STEM CELL THERAPY PROVIDES PROMISE LIKE NEVER BEFORE FOR THOSE WHO ARE PARALYZED As of mid 2015, Brandon Lyons, 25, is one of only four people in the U.S.A to be picked for a neural stem cell transplantation. The Camp Hill man was paralyzed 13 months ago when he jumped off a pier while on vacation. “This whole year I was really working hard to get accepted into one of these clinical trials,” said Lyons. The clinical trial is taking place at the University of California San Diego in July 2015. This the first time the surgery is being done in the United States. “Each patient that is enrolled in the study will receive human derived stem cells and they will receive a direct injection of these into the area of their spinal cord injury,” said Dr. Joseph Ciacci, neurosurgeon, UC San Diego Health System. Lyons had to undergo two days of testing in San Diego to qualify for the clinical trial and he received the final spot. Three patients have already undergone the surgery and are recovering. “They have done it in various types of animals,” said Lyons. “They have mice, pigs and monkeys all walking from this. It is very exciting, very hopeful that the same theory will work for humans.” After the surgery Lyons will be in ICU for about a week and then will stay in San Diego for about a month as he recovers so doctors can monitor his progress. There are no promises the procedure will work. You do not know when or if something is going to happen so I think that is the most challenging part,” said Lyons. But there is hope and that is what has motivated him to keep pushing. “I am extremely excited and very optimistic,” said Lyons. “Who knows, maybe he will be the first person here in the United States to walk after stem cells,” said Kelly Bennie, Lyon’s mother. STEM CELL MATCH REGISTERS HOW YOU CAN SAVE A PERSON’S LIFE (Continued) A number of stem cell match and donor registers are now available. They are enabling cell matches to be found quickly like no time in history before and many lives to be saved. Generally donors need to be aged between 18 and 60 years of age however this age range does differ in certain countries. The process for transporting new healthy stem cells into the recipient, especially to help those with blood disorders has improved significantly in the last decade. Here is a link that provides contacts for worldwide donor registries. https://www.bmdw.org/index.php?id=become_donor

Duke Meets The 29 Year Old Who Saved His Life

DENVER – For six years now, Duke Saeman waited to meet the man who saved his life. On Tuesday, October 14th, 2014, his wait was over when the 29-year-old German man arrived at Denver International Airport in the U.S.A. 35

STEM CELL MATCH REGISTERS HOW YOU CAN SAVE A PERSON’S LIFE (Continued) Saeman was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008. The prognosis was grim. Doctors told him he had about two months to live. “I was lethargic,” he said. “It was tough to get up the energy to do things I wanted to do, and it progressively got worse.” They said he needed a stem cell transplant, but finding the perfect donor would be tough. There were only two “10 for 10″ matches, both from overseas. Saeman’s match came from Germany and his transplant of stem cells was immediate. Doctors typically expect patients will take 30 to 45 days to recover from that kind of transplant. Duke was released after five days and has been healthy and leukemia-free ever since. Saeman set out on a mission to find the donor. After two years he found his donor. Saeman then went to work, planning a trip for 29-year-old Marco and his girlfriend to come to Denver and meet his family. In October, 2014 Saeman’s dream came true. “I’m extremely excited to meet this young man and I’m going to treat him like a king while he’s here,” he said. Saeman paid all of Marco’s expenses for the 10-day trip, which will include a trip to Las Vegas, somewhere Marco wanted to see. 9NEWS was there when Marco and Duke met at the airport. Duke wanted to share his story to inspire others to sign up for the donor registry. JOURNALIST SUE LLOYD-ROBERTS BRAVE BATTLE TO FIGHT AGGRESSIVE LEUKEMIA

In June 2015, award winning Journalist Sue Lloyd-Roberts talked openly about her urgent need for a stem cell transplant, having been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. Sue Lloyd-Roberts worked for both the BBC and ITN, and was the first reporter into Homs in Syria - smuggled into town in the back of a car. She was also sentenced (in her absence) in China to seven years in prison for some of her reporting. Lloyd-Roberts’s chances of surviving the disease rested on a transplant. Of the 25 million names on the Anthony Nolan Trust register, only three potential donors were identified - with all three later ruled out. “My prognosis is very grim. So I’m counting on one,” she said. The BBC got to work and hosted a donor campaign, inviting those aged between 16-30 years to provide a saliva sample in the hope that they could quickly find Sue a suitable donor. In July 2015 a match was found, and the stem cell transplant was carried out within a matter of weeks. Unfortunately after the transplant, Sue developed pneumonia. This is a risk as shortly after a transplant, the immune system is very weak and has not yet rebuilt itself. Sadly, Sue passed away on October 13th, 2015. WHY ATHLETES ARE TURNING TO STEM CELLS

• In November 2014, Rafael Nadal’s Doctor announced the 14-time Grand Slam winner will receive stem cell treatment on his ailing back. • Angel Ruiz-Cotorro told The Associated Press “we are going to put cells in a joint in his spine” next week in Barcelona. • Nadal experienced severe back pain during the final of the Australian Open in January when he lost to Stan Wawrinka. • Nadal has a problem typical in tennis with a back joint, he had it at the Australian Open, and we have decided to treat it with stem cells,” Ruiz-Cotorro said. He said Nadal is expected to return to training in early December 2014. • Nadal’s fellow Spaniard Pau Gasol, center of the Chicago Bulls, received stem cell treatment on his knee in 2013. 39

WHY ATHLETES ARE TURNING TO STEM CELLS (Continued) Many professional athletes are turning to autologous stem cell treatment. It’s no surprise as the downtime is significantly shorter and for most, a lot more effective than surgery. One of the most talked about cases in the U.S.A. is Payton Manning. As a quarterback in the National Football League, Manning suffered a number of hits that led to a herniation in one of the discs in his neck. Unable to throw, he had to sit out an entire season trying to rehabilitate his neck with surgeries and rest. In 2011 Manning decided to travel to Europe and there he had his own stem cells injected into his neck in an attempt to heal the disc and nerves. Soon afterwards, within a couple of months, he began throwing again. His sporting career continues and he has been playing ever since. In 2013, at the age of 37, Manning showcased the best season ever for an NFL quarterback and his 2014 season has been very impressive. Stem cell treatment is considered perfectly legal by many professional sports leagues. Treatments do however vary and full stem cell replacement treatment remains very restricted in the U.S.A. due to FDA regulation. Many Physicians and Health Practices here in the U.S.A. provide platelet rich plasma therapy and not stem cell treatment. They are different procedures. Stem cell therapy is the gold standard. Anyone seeking full adult stem cell treatment should always check the credentials of the Doctor, the Clinic and always speak to patients who have received the same treatment administered by the same Doctor.

Why are so many athletes turning to stem cell treatment? • • • •

It is non invasive. It is an outpatient procedure with virtually no downtime. There is almost no risk of rejection as it involves the patient’s own stem cells. Despite some continued skepticism (i.e. often from those who are misinformed or those who push an alternative agenda for the wrong reasons), adult stem cell clinical studies, research, reviews and testimonials provide compelling evidence.

As biologic research continues to improve, the U.S.A will become more accepting of stem cell treatments. Athletes will be able to recover from injury more quickly than ever before and will not have to travel overseas to receive treatment. Leading Sports Physician, Doctor James Andrews tells Sports Illustrated: “We have had one big revelation in sports medicine over the last 50 years, and that was the arthroscope. I’ve been looking for the next wave, and I think the biologics, particularly stem-cell therapy and enhancement of the healing properties, will be it.” 40

UFC FIGHTER DANIEL CORMIER TO RECEIVE MORE STEM CELL THERAPY THEN DEFEND HIS TITLE

Adult stem cell therapy has already helped StrikeForce Champion and UFC light heavyweight fighter Daniel Cormier avoid surgery. He has more stem cell treatment scheduled. Cormier is set to defend his title in October 2015. In June 2015, the following article was published in bloodyelbow confirmed Cormier’s stem cell treatment. Alexander Gustafsson may have been granted the next shot at the light heavyweight strap, but he’ll have to wait a bit to get there. Daniel Cormiertook advantage of the stripping of Jon Jones’ title last April to plug himself right back into the title picture, and this time around wrestle away the vacant belt from challenger Anthony Johnson. But, that doesn’t mean that Cormier was or is quite 100%. Perhaps even a lot less than 100%. It turns out, as Cormier’s doctor told him, he’s been running, essentially, on one ACL and he’s going to need to undergo platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy to help repair the damage and reduce swelling, as Cormier has opted not to have surgery on the knee. MMAFighting has the report. This isn’t Cormier’s first runaround with knee surgery and choosing therapy over the knife. Back in 2014, he received treatment for his LCL, successfully it seems, to avoid undergoing knee surgery before fighting Jon Jones. This latest injury may just be part of a continuation of battling knee problems for the former Olympian. Stay posted as the status quo is sure to change.

UPDATE ON HOCKEY LEGEND GORDIE HOWE

Gordie Howe’s Progress Exceeds All Expectations Following Adult Stem Cell Treatment The news on Mr Hockey continues to get better and better. Gordie Howe, who finished his career with the Harford Whalers at age 52, is the NHL’s all-time leader in games played (1,767) and ranks second in goals (801). At age 86, Gordie Howe suffered a significant stroke on October 26, 2014 which impaired his speech and caused him to lose functionality of the right side of his body. Gordie’s son, Murray Howe says his Dad (now 87 years of age) was on his death bed before undergoing an eight-hour stem cell therapy treatment in Tijuana, Mexico on December, 8, 2014. “He pretty much had one foot in the grave,” Murray Howe said. “He wasn’t really eating. He couldn’t stand under his own power. He wasn’t really talking. We just hated to see him in the condition he was in.” “We were thinking he maybe had two or three weeks to live,” he continued. “We just didn’t want him to be laying in a bed for the last three weeks of his life. We took him out to Mexico with no expectations. We were just completely blown away by his response (to the treatments). I’m still astonished. I’ve never seen anything like it in medicine.” “The more I read I was just astonished at No. 1 the safety of it,” Murray Howe said. “There’s really very little chance of adverse reaction, and the success that I’ve seen is just mind-boggling. They said, “We can’t guarantee that your Dad is going to get better, but we suspect that he will and we hope that he will. We’d really like to give it a try.” The fact that the whole clinic was willing to do it for free and they felt that our Dad could be helped by this spoke volumes. They had their reputation on the line. If something went wrong or if it didn’t really help, they would look silly.” The two days of treatment yielded miraculous results. “By day five he was completely walking on his own and every day since he’s continued to improve,” Murray Howe said. “He completely walks on his own now. Last week we walked about a half mile in total to a mall. He had to sit down about two or three times just to rest, but he’s completely walking on his own.” “I kicked around a soccer ball with him,” Murray Howe continued. “He’s playing driveway hockey with his grandsons. You really couldn’t even tell he had a stroke at this point. It’s so phenomenal.” Four months on, Gordie Howe’s progress following his adult stem cell treatment continues to exceed everyone’s expectations. This link provides a radio interview recorded in April 2015 with Gordie’s son, Dr. Murray Howe providing a detailed overview on his father’s treatment and his incredible recovery so far: http://www.stemcellworx.com/blog/gordie-howes-progress-exceeds-expectations-adult-stem-cell-treatment 42

SEVEN ANTI-AGING TIPS WITHOUT SPENDING A FORTUNE

1

Beware When Washing Your Face

• Do not wash your face with tap water. Tap water contains chlorine. It is a disinfectant used by most water plants to zap dangerous contaminants. Over time the chlorine in tap water dries the skin and causes oxidative damage. Always have a container of purified or distilled water in the shower, on the side of the bath and by the hand basin. Wash your face only with water from the container or with fresh water not from a tap. • Avoid washing your face with hot water especially when in the shower. Hot water dries out the skin. Excessive hot water on your face increases the chemical reaction between your skin and the chlorine and causes skin deterioration over time. • Ensure you use a new, clean face cloth on a daily basis or use disposal face cloths. If you use disposal face cloths ensure they are not perfumed. Perfumed products on your face cause skin irritation. • Using soap on your face is not recommended. If you do, ensure you use only a facial soap that is not perfumed. Soap-free, fragrance-free face and body washes are always best for the skin. • A fragrance-free, gentle exfoliator is a good way to rid the skin of excess skin and flakiness that builds up over time. Also a mild cleanser that is non-perfumed and isn’t too rich is always best. A good quality exfoliator can be just as beneficial as micro-dermabrasion but beware more is not better. Only exfoliate once a week, twice at most otherwise you run the risk of stripping away your skin’s natural barrier and oils, and creating skin dryness and irritation. • Leading dermatologist, Leslie Baumann says: ØØ “if you have sensitive skin or skin irritation, forget about exfoliating, just cleanse, as exfoliating is too abrasive for your skin type.” ØØ “calming ingredients like aloe can be a bonus but as a general rule, the fewer ingredients in a facial product, the better.” 43

Your Pillowcase Is Extremely Important

• One of the best ways to avoid wrinkles is to sleep on your back. As this can be difficult, you can use support pillows on either side of your body to stop you rolling on your stomach. If you sleep on your side, use one support pillow at your side, and try to sleep on the edge of your pillow, with your hand tucked underneath your face so as much weight as possible remains off the face while sleeping. Even though you won’t stay in one position all night long, these basics do work to accustom your body to sleep in a new position over time and they definitely pay off when it comes to wrinkle prevention. • Invest in a natural fabric pillowcase. 100% white cotton or satin pillowcases are best. • Ensure the surface of your pillowcase is smooth before you lay down at night. Ensure the pillowcase is not creased or bunched up as this can cause wrinkles or temporary creases in the face. • Ensure you change your pillowcase frequently, at least 2-3 times a week. If you are prone to breakouts change your pillowcase daily. • Always wash your face before going to bed and not with tap water. Do not have excess moisturizer or acne medications caked on your skin at night just before you hit the sheets. The excess will deposit on your pillowcase. Excess oil and residue on your pillowcase causes irritation to the face, especially if you are prone to breakouts. • Ensure you wash your pillowcase in unscented detergent. Don’t use perfumed or liquid fabric softeners either when it comes to washing your pillowcase. They leave a waxy residue that can also deposit on your pillowcase.

Invest In Sunscreen

The sun is extremely damaging to the skin. At the very least you should invest in a daily moisturizer with SPF 15 protection. However, never mistake this for full sunscreen protection. If you work outside or do a lot of outdoor activities you will need to purchase a sunscreen that is separate to your moisturizer and one that provides SPF protection of between 30 and 50. If you are outdoors for long periods of time ensure your sunscreen is applied every two hours for maximum protection. Those most at risk to exposure to UV radiation from sunlight are: • Outdoor workers such as farmers, fisherman, construction workers and lifeguards. • Outdoor enthusiasts. • Sunbathers. • People who regularly use tanning beds. Jeffrey Dover, Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine says most people under-apply sunscreen by one-fourth. Mineral make up is also beneficial, applied on top of your sunscreen as its adds extra protection. When driving don’t be fooled that the window glass is protecting you from harmful UV rays. Medical experts in the U.S.A. report cases of skin cancer are far more frequent on the left side of the face. Specific windshield protectors and tinting/films provide good protection but if you do not have these installed, ensure you apply sunscreen or shade the window of your vehicle to ensure you and others in the vehicle are protected at all times from high levels of UV radiation. Don’t Smoke

• Smoking does cause wrinkles and premature aging of the skin. Numerous clinical studies show this, including detailed studies conducted by the Mayo Clinic. Not only does smoking cause wrinkles, especially around the mouth, but it also makes the skin weak, tired, often dry, discolored and thickened in areas. Smoking also removes vitamin C from the body, and this is a very important nutrient that keeps the skin plump and supple. • In addition to significant damage to the skin, clinical studies show smoking increases the risk of emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease and stroke. The nicotine in cigarettes causes narrowing of the blood vessels. This reduces blood flow and causes less oxygen and other vital nutrients to be available to the blood, tissues and organs. • Although early skin damage from smoking may not be apparent for a number of years (i.e. 10 years), the effects are definitely occurring and they can be long lasting when they occur. • The more cigarettes you smoke, the longer you smoke, the more skin wrinkling will occur. • Smoking not only changes the skin, it has an effect on one’s teeth and hair as well. • When a chronic smoker quits smoking, some skin improvements become evident within 90 days. • To stop smoking, seek assistance through a professional program, move to electronic cigarettes or patches first if you cannot go cold turkey. 46

A Deep Restorative Sleep Is Important

• With us all working longer hours, and often more to stress about in our busy lives, it can be very difficult to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night. While thousands of us stress we don’t get the standard sleep hours, it really isn’t that bad. • Sammy Margo, author of The Good Sleep Guide insists “it’s quality not quantity of sleep that we need to focus on.” But what counts as quality sleep? Margo says, “What you need is a deep restorative sleep, which can be anywhere between four and eight hours depending on individuals. So you definitely shouldn’t start worrying about numbers. Being on countdown is definitely not encouraged.” “And similarly, if you’re waking up in the middle of the night it’s not the end of the world. Many people are, be it mums or just people who need to go to the toilet – they’re not considered insomniacs. So try not to get stressed about it.” “Don’t get hung up on how many hours or that you didn’t make it through the night in one go,” she says. “The way to tell if you’ve had a quality night’s sleep is that you wake up feeling refreshed,” says Sammy Margo. • A sound sleep is very restoring for the body. Yale Dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, MD says, “you’ll produce more HGH (human growth hormone), which helps the skin remain thick, more elastic, and less likely to wrinkle.” 47

A Good Moisturizer (Day and Night)

• Invest in a quality moisturizer. Apply first thing in the morning and in the evening, directly after you have washed your face. • To help seal in water, apply your moisturizer (with SPF) right after cleansing or washing your face, while your skin is still damp. • Ensure you don’t have too much moisturizer on your skin just before going to bed as it can cause residue on your pillowcase. • A moisturizer or face cream that contains antioxidants is best, plus hyaluronic acid, glycerin or ceramides. These bind in the moisture and prevent water loss from the skin. • Fragrance free and oil free moisturizers are always best.

Supplement Your Food Intake With Quality Health Supplements

Today, the majority of our food and soil is depleted of vital nutrients. This is due to over-processing, soil contamination, use of chemicals and pesticides, many companies using cheap fillers to save costs, and added preservatives to name just a few reasons. To make up the shortfall it is vital you supplement your daily food intake with quality health supplements and organic nutrient sources. Here are six health supplements you should be taking, not only to improve your skin but to provide major benefits to your entire body: • Vitamin C • Vitamin D • Fish Oil (providing omega fatty acids)

48

SEVEN ANTI-AGING TIPS WITHOUT SPENDING A FORTUNE (Continued) 7. Supplement Your Food Intake With Quality Health Supplements (Continued) • A powerful antioxidant – especially those with natural growth factors (i.e. IGF-1, IGF-2, Transforming Growth Factors, EPG, fibroblast-GF, and platelet derived GF), as these are extremely beneficial for the skin as well as overall maintenance and repair for the entire body. In particular, EGF (epidermal growth factor) is extremely important for the skin. As we age our growth and immune factors decline and our cells release and divide more slowly. Growth factors are essential to enable our adult stem cells to continue to divide and activate. This slow down in cell activity, especially at the stem cell level, has a huge impact on our body and also causes the skin to thin and the body to not repair and recover so quickly, especially as we enter our senior years. Not only is Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray a powerful antioxidant that possesses all of the natural growth factors named above it is scientifically proven to be the most powerful stem cell activator in supplement form on the market. This is due to its natural, pure ingredients (that contain growth and immune factors that are absolutely necessary to initiate and activate stem cells) and its intraoral spray delivery that provides an absorption rate of up to 95% of its nutrients compared to pills and capsules that only provide a 10% to 20% absorption rate at best. • Resveratrol is also a very powerful antioxidant that has many anti-aging benefits. Transresveratrol is the best form of resveratrol available. It is 1000 times more pure, powerful and effective than grape extract or resveratrol that comes from grapes. Clinical studies show trans resveratrol taken intraorally (sprayed under the tongue, hold then swallow) is 250 times more effective compared to when taken in pill or capsule form.

This isn’t your best source of resveratrol

SEVEN ANTI-AGING TIPS WITHOUT SPENDING A FORTUNE (Continued) 7. Supplement Your Food Intake With Quality Health Supplements (Continued) • Bovine Colostrum and Whey Powder Are Excellent Sources Of Protein High quality bovine colostrum (i.e. with over 30% of the antibody IgG) contains more than 54% protein. Bovine colostrum is the best source of protein available, even more so than whey powder. It is extremely beneficial to build lean, muscle tissue and when combined with other specialized ingredients it activates one’s own adult stem cells. Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray contains a pure 98%–99% pure trans-resveratrol from Japanese knotweed, the highest grade of bovine colostrum available and a 95% pure fucoidan. Synergistically combined, these three ingredients act as a super booster to stimulate your own adult stem cells. Stem cells therapies can rejuvenate your face, body, organs, tissue, and old cells. They are an incredible anti aging source. Our body contains 50 to 70 trillion cells. It is vital we keep our adult stem cells activated and healthy. Fresh water fish can be extremely beneficial for the skin due to its omega fatty acids. Stick to fish that swim in fresh water or the middle of the ocean. Avoid or reduce fish intake when the fish sources come from the very bottom of the ocean. This is where all the junk is and the fish consume all the rubbish on the sea floor. Sushi can also be bad for the skin as sushi is often preserved with large quantities of salt and is usually prepared and served with white rice. Salt (sodium and chlorine) and high glycemic rice (white rice) are skin irritants. Excess dairy and alcohol are also bad for the skin as they contain high levels of sugar and yeast. Alcohol enables more water to move from the bloodstream into your skin, which can result in facial puffiness. Over time this can stretch the skin and increase wrinkles. Ensure you drink alcohol and consume dairy foods in moderation.

IMPORTANT FACTS YOU MUST KNOW BEFORE BUYING ANY HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS

Don’t waste your hard earned cash on the wrong type of health supplements. Here are 5 key points to consider before you buy any health supplement.

1

Absorption is Everything

A health supplement in liquid form that is consumed by spraying under the tongue is known as intraoral delivery. In certain contexts, it may be referred to as sublingual. Intraoral is a viable way to take your health supplements as it offers an absorption rate of up to 95% of its nutrients compared to only a 10% to 20% absorption rate that pills and capsules provide. The sub-mucosal membrane that sits under our tongue enables nutrients taken intraorally to get directly into the bloodstream, straight away. You are therefore not wasting 80% to 90% of the nutrients as you do with pills and capsules. Intraoral (apart from intravenous) provides the most concentrated source of nutrient delivery. See the graph below that illustrates absorption rate percentages for various applications.

51

IMPORTANT FACTS YOU MUST KNOW BEFORE BUYING ANY HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS (Continued) 1. Absorption is Everything (Continued) Many pills and capsules when taken orally are quickly digested and metabolized in the intestines and liver, resulting in less than 5 percent of the oral dose in pill and capsule form remaining in the blood plasma. This metabolic process is known as the “first pass effect,” and results in the compounds being eliminated from the digestive and urinary system right after ingestion. Even if larger dosages of ingredients are consumed in pill form or a certain type of capsule coating is used (i.e. vegetable capsule), in almost all cases its concentration levels inside the blood still fail to reach the required levels necessary for effective nutritional value and most ingredients within the pill don’t even reach required levels for laboratory testing conditions. Intraoral delivery avoids the “first pass effect” issue.

The study linked below found resveratrol administered by intraoral delivery is 250 times more effective than when taken in pill form. http://muurahaiset.net/wiki/index.php/K%C3%A4ytt%C3%A4j%C3%A4:GuiPeebles961

2

Always Check The Label

Have you ever come across a health supplement that states the ingredients only in IUs (International Units) or Mcgs (micrograms)? Like nanograms (ngs) these measurements can equate to zilch. It is crucial you understand what these measurements equate too before you buy your health supplements.

Example 1. Converting IUs into Mgs a.

1 mcg Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) = 40 IU. Don’t mistake mcgs for mgs. They are totally different measurements, and many people often don’t see the small “c” within mcgs, especially as supplement facts are often displayed in small text on the label.

b. Let´s say you have 300 IU of Vitamin D: 300 / 40 = 7.5 mcg Vitamin D. Then you would have to convert 7.5 mcg to mg: 7.5 / 1000 = 0.0075mg Vitamin D (less than 1mg). c. Another example, 5000 IUs of Vitamin D becomes 0.125mg of Vitamin D.

Example 2. Ng, MCG, MG and G Conversation Rates 5000mcg = 5mg 1000 nanograms (ng) = 1 microgram (mcg) 1000 micrograms (mcg) = 1 milligram (mg) 1000 milligrams (mg) = 1 gram (g) It is recommended you buy health supplements that state the ingredients in milligrams (mgs) or grams. If IUs, Mcgs or Ngs are noted, ensure you do the math. Here are two links to conversion tables to help you. http://www.thecalculatorsite.com/conversions/common/mcg-to-mg.php http://www.etoolsage.com/converter/IU_Converter.asp

3

Beware of Proprietary Blends

When a proprietary blend of ingredients is shown on the supplement label and no percentages of purity shown for each ingredient, this generally means a number of poor, low grade ingredients have been mixed together with practically no purity or nutritional value whatsoever. Always look for standalone ingredients to be noted separately on a supplement label with the percentage of purity noted against each ingredient.

4

Beware of Certain Fillers, Binders and Artificial Sweeteners

Fillers, binders and artificial sweeteners will generally be noted under the “other” section at the bottom of the supplement fact panel. Sometimes they are noted as “inactive” ingredients. Most of these substances are not good for you. They are mostly used to bind ingredients together, fill and/or lubricate capsules, pills and tablets and are often used only to aid consumption and/or accelerate manufacturing processes. Fillers and binders are not so common in liquid supplements because they are not required, as per the points below. Binders are mostly used to bind or hold ingredients together. They are typically a sugar derivative and include: lactose, sucrose, microcrystalline cellulose, sorbitol, propylene glycol, xylitol to name a few. Sweeteners such as corn, sucralose (or splenda) should be avoided. In 2013 Splenda (sucralose) was downgraded from “safe” to “caution” after an Italian animal study linked sucralose to a higher risk of developing leukemia. Magnesium stearate is used as a lubricant. It is formed by adding a magnesium ion to stearic acid. It is mostly used in vitamins to avoid them sticking to one another or the equipment when they are manufactured. Research to date shows the stearic acid suppresses T cells (your natural killer cells) that are a key component of a healthy immune system. Avoid hydrogenated oils. These have been found to encourage heart problems and upset blood sugar regulation. The bottom line is you don’t want fillers, binders and artificial sweeteners in your health supplements. 54

Intraoral Spray Supplements Provide Huge Advantages

Whenever possible buy your quality health supplements in liquid form (preferably for administration via intraoral spray or in dropper form). Remember to still check the points above. A wide range of quality liquid health supplements are now available. Until now, buccal and intraoral spray delivery had been best advised for smaller particle molecules, therefore most vitamins and minerals ideally suit this form of administration. However, more recent science shows a great deal of biological compounds, nutraceuticals and drugs can be effectively administered in intraoral format. This is also a much more cost effective method of administration as a lower dosage of ingredient is required due to this being such a concentrated source of delivery. The intraoral route of administration has recently been investigated for insulin and heparin. [Reference: International Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science Research – ISSN: 2249-0337 – February 2013 and Life Enhancement Magazine].

Key Advantages of Intraoral Delivery •

Increased bioavailability

•

Higher plasma levels

•

Rapid absorption and onset of actions

•

Avoids pre-systemic elimination in the GI tract

•

Avoids first-pass effect of the liver

•

Avoids exposure to a hostile GI environment

•

Ability to swallow is not required

WHY SPRAY SUPPLEMENTS

WORK BEST

On a regular basis we are asked “why is it best we take the supplement intraorally (sprayed under the tongue)?” We reply: “because this enables almost all of the nutrients to hit the bloodstream quickly, which is extremely effective. The absorption rate for an intraoral spray delivery (referred to as sublingual in certain contexts) enables up to 95% of the nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream, whereas pills and capsules have an absorption rate of only 10% to 20% at best.”

So Why Is This? When certain molecules are placed under the tongue, they are absorbed through the sub-mucosal membrane (a layer of connective tissue that sits beneath your tongue), that has a direct route into the bloodstream. This enables almost all of the nutrients to get into the bloodstream in their entirety and get to work straight away. There are no road blocks, no waiting – just straight into the bloodstream (the body’s principal carrier of nutrients throughout the entire body) and off to work they go.

So What About When You Swallow a Pill or Capsule? Good question. When you swallow a pill or capsule it must go through your entire gastrointestinal tract. This means the stomach (which has acid and bile), and the intestines (where most of the absorption takes place), and then off to the liver, where more filtering is done. THEN finally what is left of the nutrients is delivered to where it is needed. If you have a healthy gastrointestinal tract, healthy stomach and liver, the absorption rate of nutrients that finally get into your bloodstream and the intended destination point will be 20%. The problem is over 70% of the American population suffer from digestive and/or gastrointestinal tract issues. This results in very poor absorption through the intestines and liver (i.e. leaky gut syndrome is common), and these issues reduce the absorption rate when taking a pill or capsule to less than 10%. 56

WHY SPRAY SUPPLEMENTS WORK BEST (Continued) Speed is also an important factor. Not only is the absorption rate of nutrients far superior with intraoral delivery, the speed via this route is fast and direct, and because the potency of the formulation stays intact, less nutrients are needed making this delivery very cost effective. The digestive tract is one incredibly harsh route and it is set up this way for a purpose. It is how our food is broken down. The nutrients get stripped out, the waste gets filtered. This is why pills are getting so large, as many companies try to squeeze more nutrients into them. Many people cut a pill or capsule in half and then put the contents under the tongue, but the problem is often the compressed manufacturing processes of a pill have already destroyed many of its nutrients. Another big negative with a pill and capsule is its coating and fillers. Coatings and fillers are used in most pills and capsules to bind the ingredients together, fill and/or lubricate the contents, and accelerate manufacturing through the equipment so they don’t stick together. This is not the case for liquid health supplements. Fillers and binders are not nearly so common in liquid supplements because they are not needed. Pills and capsules generally contain a lot more low grade ingredients than liquid supplements. Never buy proprietary blends. Most proprietary blends contain a bunch of low grade ingredients that are grouped together so you don’t have a clue of the purity or source of each ingredient. Always look on the label for the individual ingredients to be noted separately with their actual percentage of purity displayed. Yes, quality supplements are more expensive, but when the ingredients are stated individually on the label, with a high percentage of purity noted, you are receiving quality. Also look for the ingredients to be stated in milligrams (mgs) or grams. Mcgs (watch for that little c) and IUs equate to zilch. If you see IUs, Mcgs or Ng measurements, do the math using an online conversion calculator. Liquid intraoral / sublingual formulations are the way of the future. You want to ensure you spray the formulation under your tongue, hold for at least 7 seconds, then swallow the remainder of the formulation. If you look around in the Health Stores today, you will find a good range of liquid and spray health supplements but ensure when taking any liquid supplement you don’t just chug-a-lug it down so it all runs down your throat. The spray under the tongue method is by far the best delivery method for health supplements as stated in the Physicians Desk Reference. Pharmaceutical companies are moving quickly to develop many sublingual and intraoral applications (including diabetic medications). HAVING TROUBLE LOSING WEIGHT?

5 FAT BUSTERS THAT FIGHT THE JIGGLE FAST GOAL

1

Food Intake Ratio (approximately 50% protein, 30% carbohydrates, 20% good fats)

The majority of your meals should be rich in protein (i.e. chicken breast, fish, steak, kidney beans, cottage cheese, tofu, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans). Have one day a week set aside for a splurge of what foods you love, but all in moderation. This is a ratio guideline as it will depend on how active you are and the type of exercise you do. • The food pyramid was created several decades ago. It is no surprise it has undergone numerous changes since then as it was actually upside down when it was first created, with the carbohydrate allocation being way too high. •

There are good fats and bad fats. Believe it or not good fats (unsaturated fats) actually help you burn fat and aid weight loss, help brain function and reduce heart disease risk. Good fats include those found in avocados, olive oil, nuts, seafood – a good combination of omega 3s, 6s and 9s.

• Have quality protein bars and shakes (that contain at least 16 grams of protein) on hand so you grab these when you are hungry instead of the carbs. •

Foods labeled “low fat” may not be good for you. A low fat label means yes, the fat has been stripped out, but often so too has 99% of the nutritional value. Low fat foods may also contain fillers or sugar substitutes to enhance the bland taste. Read low fat labels carefully.

•

Be mindful of foods that cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels can increase your risk of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and they cause havoc with your energy levels. Blood sugar levels rise when you consume foods with easily converted carbohydrates. To help guide you, select foods based on the Glycemic Index (GI). This index uses a scale of 0 to 100, giving higher values to those foods that cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. The lower the GI ranking, the less impact there is on your blood sugar levels. It is best to stick to low and medium GI foods that are 69 and below on the GI scale.

Check food GI rankings here: http://www.medindia.net/patients/calculators/glycemic-index.asp

5 FAT BUSTERS (Continued) GOAL

2

Do some form of exercise at least 4 times a week. For best results do a combination of both strength training and cardio on separate days.

•

Cardio done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach burns 200% more fat than doing it later in the day because your body is using fat as energy. It is harder to do first thing in the morning because your energy levels are lower at this time but it is definitely worth the effect.

•

Strength training (i.e. weight and resistance training) is vital for weight loss because it burns more fat. One pound of muscle burns approximately 6 calories a day, whereas a pound of fat only burns approximately 1.98 calories a day.

•

Strength training is also effective for improving your body’s insulin sensitivity and delivering more glucose to the cells. This is a good thing as the muscle acts as a storage space for the glucose that in turn builds muscle mass and this helps keep your glucose levels within normal ranges.

59

5 FAT BUSTERS (Continued) GOAL

3

Have a bottle of water by your side at all times. Think then drink. Grab the water first on a ratio 5:1, instead of the soda, wine or beer. Keeping hydrated is vital.

Coffee in moderation is good for you. Those who drink 2 to 3 cups of coffee daily have a 25 per cent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease than non-drinkers, a study of 100,000 adults found. More recent studies have found that more than 4 cups of coffee per day may attribute to some health problems. Dehydration causes histamine levels within the body to build, that result in joint and muscle pain, itchy skin, runny nose, dry eyes, low concentration and energy levels, mood swings, bloating and weight gain to name a few. •

Water supports all forms of life. Next to oxygen it is the most important nutrient in the body.

•

The body cannot store water. We must therefore have fresh supplies of water every day to make up for the natural losses from our lungs, skin and urine.

•

Dehydration affects us at a cellular level. The cell membrane is coated with cholesterol to retain precious water within the cell. When water dehydration is not addressed over a period of time, the cholesterol coating thickens and interferes with the transfer of substances like nutrients from entering the cell that in turn disrupts normal cellular communication.

•

Our body depends on us to keep it nourished and hydrated.

•

To check how much water your body needs, take your weight and divide it in half (i.e. if you weigh 128 lbs, you need to drink 64 oz of water every day; if you weigh 150 lbs, you should be drinking 75 oz a day).

60

4

Evaluate yourself on a regular basis.

I find the best way to do this is to have a pair of jeans in the wardrobe that I must fit into every four months. Once you start exercising and seeing the results of your hard work, you will be amazed at how all aspects of your life change for the better. Be realistic and strategic when it comes to your weight loss goals (i.e. outline your vision, list out the goals that will get you there with timelines, then take action). •

Be aware of what you are eating and drinking. If you are overindulging for three days in a row, plan to exercise and eat clean for the next five days.

•

Don’t stress if you haven’t got the right exercise gear. Pull out the old T-shirt, shorts and track shoes from the back of the wardrobe. It doesn’t matter what you wear when you exercise.

•

Most bad food choices occur when a person is over tired, over stressed, short on time, travelling, hungry, and just not concentrating. Always have some healthy food choices (protein) on hand for when these moments occur.

•

Never go grocery shopping when you are absolutely exhausted and hungry.

Get Some Additional Kick Starters and Set Yourself a Reward

To help you get motivated and on your way, buy some good quality fat burning supplements and protein shakes. Remember the protein verses carbohydrate ratio explained above. •

The right health supplements kick start your metabolism and will help you reach your weight loss goals faster.

•

Healthy cells need a lot of energy to function properly and carry out metabolic processes. Stem Cell Supplements help speed up your metabolism. Remember liquid health supplements provide a much higher absorption rate of nutrients (up to 95% absorption) compared to pills and capsules that provide a 10% to 20% absorption rate at best.

•

Set yourself a weight loss goal now and write it down. This will be your goal to reach by December 20th, just in time for the Christmas holidays and New Year celebrations. Put this weight loss goal in your calendar, place it next to your bathroom mirror and put it on your refrigerator.

•

When you reach this goal make sure you reward yourself (i.e. buy a new outfit, get a makeover, book that holiday, plan that weekend away with your friends).

MAJOR TRENDS IN HEALTH CARE THANKS TO BABY BOOMERS With advancements in regenerative medicine taking the world by storm there has never been a better time to take advantage of the incredible health care therapies and treatments that are available. For health care providers there has never been a better time to stand out and be an absolute leader in the health and wellness industry. Here are some emerging trends that work in your favor. •

Between 2011 and 2021, over 73 million U.S.A baby boomers are set to retire. Baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) are driving the wellness industry from a $600 billion to a $1 trillion sector as boomers seek to preserve their good health and youth. This five year doubling of the market is only the beginning. Boomers are setting the pace for the wellness industry for many generations to come.

•

Generation X (those born between 1965 and 1982) and subsequent generations take the boomer-established proactive approach to holistic wellness and youthful aging as standard. It is now very much a given. Many of the younger generations take for granted or don’t even realize all the ground work that has been done by the older generations to get to this point. New found anti-aging and regenerative health trends have been advanced and adopted by the baby boomers at a rapid rate and these are now firmly embedded into our everyday lifestyles. These have been and will continue to be fully embraced so everyone has the privilege to experience them first-hand.

•

60 really is the new 40. Preserving our vitality and youth, maintaining our fitness levels, quality of life and staying power well into our 80s and 90s is the ultimate level of accomplishment and inspiration.

•

In 2012, something unheard of happened – money spent on prescription drugs in the U.S.A. actually dropped. In 2012, a report issued by IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics found the total spend on prescription medicines dropped to $325.8 billion, down from $329.2 billion in 2011. This resulted in the average spend per person on prescription medicines falling by $33.

“That’s the first time IMS has ever measured a decline in the 58 years we’ve been monitoring drugs,” reported Michael Kleinrock, Director of Research Development at the Institute. 63

MAJOR TRENDS IN HEALTH CARE (Continued) A number of factors are influencing these changes and they cannot all be covered here. Therefore, outlined below are just 7 key trends that are contributing to changes in the landscape of our health care systems and overall health care management. Here are some emerging trends that work in your favor. •

The increasingly widespread use of low-cost generics. Many big brand-name drugs lost 20 year patent protection from late 2011 and during 2012. Protonix for heart burn was just one of these drugs that recently went off patent. This can now be purchased for around $20 a month for the generic, verses $170 for the brand name.

•

Drug companies have trimmed staff numbers over the past five years and diversified into emerging global markets such as China and India. They have also moved into businesses where there is no generic competition. New drug approvals will continue in the U.S. and as they emerge they are expected to fill the recent revenue hole. However, there is a significant difference now compared to drug developments just one decade ago. Many of the new specialty drugs are very complex. They are injected or infused and are so-called biologics, complex proteins that are made in living cells that treat a range of diseases. Many will be expensive once they are fully developed. The good news is we now have available to us (and will have in the next 10 years) health care treatments and therapies like never before. Significant developments in the last 5 years in the field of DNA sequencing, gene and adult stem cell therapies have enabled incredible health care advancements to occur.

•

This certainly doesn’t mean overall spending on health care decreases. IMS forecasts show overall spending on health care will continue to grow faster than spending on medicines at least through to 2017. That’s due to factors including the increasing number of elderly patients and those with very expensive chronic conditions such as diabetes, psychiatric disorders, severe heart disease and various cancers. “The sickest people drive most of our health care spending,” Kleinrock reports.

•

People are rationing their health care dollars and choosing to spend them in very different ways compared to a decade ago.

•

The National Health Statistics Report of December 2008 states: “In 2007 almost 4 out of 10 adults had used Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapy in the past 12 months.” This number has continued to increase at a rapid rate.

64

MAJOR TRENDS IN HEALTH CARE (Continued) •

Now, more than 70 million Americans every year are turning to natural health remedies, complementary and integrative health care rather than prescription drugs. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) shows nearly 40 percent of Americans report using one or more practices such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, yoga, meditation, spinal manipulation, dietary supplements or herbal medicines to help manage their health and wellness. Complementary and alternative therapies aim to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms of disease. More recent clinical studies and supporting research show CAM is extremely beneficial and valuable to a person’s overall health and well-being.

•

Similarly, data shows health care systems and providers are increasingly incorpo rating CAM interventions. According to ISPA’s 2013 research, people visiting day spas, hotel and resort spas, and destination spas are all on the rise from 156 million in 2012 to 160 million in 2013 and spending has increased to an average of $87 per visit; almost a two percent increase over the previous year.

Dr Martha Grout, MD, MD(H), with the Arizona Center for Advanced Medicine reports: “The first words out of many of my patients’ mouths are: ‘I have gone to every doctor under the sun, all they want to do is prescribe drugs for me. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. Can you help me?” According to Dr Grout, “We do have a choice – in our health care, in our choice of practitioners, in how we spend our money. We just have to keep the supplements out of the hands of Big Pharma.” Barbara Breweitt, Ph.D., from the University of Washington School of Medicine and post-doctoral researcher at The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports: “There is a new trend in longevity medicine to prepare us for healthy aging, called cell signaling. The entire body is naturally wired for cell signaling thus the body can repair, restore and coordinate physiological and psychological activities. The cell signaling approach helps with quality of life as well as transitions through life’s many stages.” Never in the history of medicine have doctors faced such a gauntlet of financial challenges and practice restrictions than they do today. These factors, among others just as crucial, don’t begin to tell the story about why 40% of medical doctors readily admit to intense frustration in their practices, in addition to the percentage of doctors quitting medical practice completely. However those that are left are the strong, relentless type. They are not retiring. They are adapting. 65

Words of Inspiration From Two Men – Lessons Learnt

A. Talk by the Late Dr. Richard Teo Below is the summarized transcript of a talk given by the late Dr. Richard Teo, a 40-year-old millionaire and cosmetic surgeon. Dr. Teo was speaking to a class of dental students in January 2012. At the time, he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He passed away on 18 October 2012. Hi, good morning to all of you. My voice is a bit hoarse, so please bear with me. My name is Richard, I’m a Medical Doctor. I’ll just share some thoughts of my life. It’s my pleasure to be invited here. Hopefully, it can get you thinking about how, as you pursue this, embarking on your training to become dental surgeons, to think about other things as well.

In Memory of Dr. Richard Teo (1972 - 2012)

I am a typical product of today’s society. A relatively successful product that society requires. I came from a below average family. I was told by the media and people around me that happiness is about success, and that success is about being wealthy. With this mind-set, I’ve always been extremely competitive, since I was young. Not only do I need to go to the top school, I need to have success in all fields. Uniform groups, track, everything. I needed to get trophies, needed to be successful. I went on to medical school and graduated as a doctor. Some of you may know that within the medical faculty, ophthalmology is one of the most highly sought after specialties. So I went after that. I was given a traineeship in ophthalmology. I was also given a research scholarship by NUS to develop lasers to treat the eye. So in the process, I was given two patents; one for the medical devices, and another for the lasers. And you know what? all the academic achievements did not bring me any wealth. So once I completed my bond with the Ministry of Health, I decided that this is taking too long. The training in eye surgery is just taking too long. And there’s lots of money to be made in the private sector. 66

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL

A. Talk by the Late Dr. Richard Teo (Continued) If you’re aware, in the last few years, there has been a rise in aesthetic medicine. Tons of money to be made there. So I decided, well, enough of staying in institution, it’s time to leave. So I quit my training halfway through and I went on to set up my aesthetic clinic in town, together with a day surgery center. You know the irony is that the average GP (general practitioner), family physician does not make heroes. They don’t. They make heroes out of people who are rich and famous. People who are not happy to pay $20 to see a GP. The same person will have no qualms paying ten thousand dollars for liposuction, fifteen thousand dollars for a breast augmentation, and so on and so forth. So instead of healing the sick and ill, I decided I’ll become a glorified beautician. So, business was good, very good. It started off with waiting times of one week, then three weeks, then one month, then two to three months. I was overwhelmed; there were just too many patients. Vanity is a fantastic business. I employed one doctor, then a second doctor, a third and then a fourth doctor. And within the 1st year, we were raking in millions. Just in the first year but never is enough because I was so obsessed with it. I started to expand into Indonesia to get all the rich Indonesian Tai Tais who wouldn’t blink an eye to have a procedure done. So life was really good. So what do I do with the spare cash? How do I spend my weekends? Typically, I attend car club gatherings. I take out my track car. We’ll go up to Sepang in Malaysia. We’ll go car racing. And it was my life. With other spare cash, what do I do? I get myself a Ferrari. At that time, the 458 wasn’t out, it’s just a spider convertible, 430. My friend, a schoolmate who is a Forex Trader, a Banker got the red one. I got the silver one. Then it’s time to buy a house, then build our own bungalows so we go looking for land, and house hunting. So how do I live my life? Well, we all think we have to mix around with the rich and famous. So we hang around with beautiful people, the rich and the famous. We dine at the best restaurants. I reach a point in life where I have got everything. I was at the pinnacle of my career and all. 67

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL A. Talk by the Late Dr. Richard Teo (Continued) One year ago, in the gym, I was like, I have everything under control and I’m reaching the pinnacle. Well, I was wrong. I didn’t have everything under control. In March (2011), I started to develop backache in the middle of nowhere. I thought maybe it was all the heavy squats I was doing. So I went to SGH, saw my classmate and got him to do an MRI, to make sure it wasn’t a slipped disc or anything. That evening, he called me up and said “I have found bone marrow replacement in your spine.” I said, “Sorry, what does that mean?” I mean, I know what it means, but I couldn’t accept that. I was like “Are you serious?” I was still running around, going to the gym. I had more scans the next day, PET scans. They found that I have stage 4 terminal lung cancer. I was like “Whoa, where did that come from?” It had already spread to the brain, the spine, the liver and the adrenals. One moment I was there, totally thinking I have everything under control, thinking I’ve reached the pinnacle of my life. But the next moment, I have lost it. Doctor Teo shows a CT scan of his lungs to his audience. He points to the scan and explains that every single dot represents a tumor. We call these military tumors. I have tens of thousands of them in the lungs. So, I was told that even with chemotherapy, that I’ll have about 3-4 months at most. Did my life come crushing down? I went into depression, severe depression. I thought I had everything. See the irony is that all these things that I have; the success, the trophies, my cars, my house and all - I thought that brought me happiness. But I was feeling really down, having severe depression. Having all these thoughts of my possessions, they brought me no joy. The thought of... you know, I can hug my Ferrari to sleep, no... no, it is not going to happen. It brought me not a single comfort during my last ten months. They were not true happiness.

68

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL A. Talk by the Late Dr. Richard Teo (Continued) What really brought me joy in the last ten months was interaction with people, my loved ones, my friends. People who genuinely care about me. They make me laugh, and they cry with me, and they are able to identify the pain and suffering I was going through. That brought joy to me and happiness. None of the things I have, all the possessions, and I thought those were supposed to bring me happiness. You know the classical Chinese New Year that is coming up. In the past, what do I do? Well, usually I drive my flashy car and do my rounds, visit my relatives and friends, to show it off. And I thought that was joy, you know. I thought that was really joy. But do you really think that my relatives and friends, whom some were having difficulty trying to make ends meet, that they will truly share the joy with me? Seeing me driving my flashy car and showing off to them? No, no way. They won’t be sharing joy with me. They were having problems trying to make ends meet, taking public transport. In fact I think, what I have done is more like, you know, making them envious, jealous of all I have. In fact, sometimes even hatred. Those are what we call objects of envy. I show them off and it can fill my own pride and ego. That didn’t bring any joy to these people, to my friends and relatives. As a House Officer, I graduated from medical school and was posted to the oncology department at NUH. And, every day, every other day I witness death in the cancer department. I see how these patients suffered. I saw all the pain they went through. I see all the morphine they have to press every few minutes just to relieve their pain. I see them struggling with their oxygen, breathing their last breath. But it was just a job to me. When I went to the wards every day, take blood, give medication. But was the patient real to me? They weren’t real to me. It was just a job. I do it, I get out of the ward, and I can’t wait to get home to do my own stuff. I know all the medical terms used to describe how they feel, all the suffering they went through. But in truth, I did not know how they feel, not until I became a patient. It is not until now that I truly understand how they feel. And, if you ask me, would I have been a very different doctor if I were to re-live my life now, I can tell you “yes I will.” Because I truly understand how the patients feel now. And sometimes, you have to learn it the hard way.

69

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL A. Talk by the Late Dr. Richard Teo (Continued) Even as you start just your first year, and you embark on your journey to become dental surgeons, let me just challenge you on two fronts. Inevitably, all of you here will start to go into private practice. You will start to accumulate wealth. I can guarantee you. And actually there is nothing wrong with being successful, with being rich or wealthy, absolutely nothing wrong. The only trouble is, that a lot of us, like myself couldn’t handle it. Why do I say that? Because when I start to accumulate, the more I have, the more I want. The more I wanted, the more obsessed I became. I became so obsessed that nothing else really mattered to me. Patients were just a source of income, and I tried to squeeze every single cent out of these patients. A lot of times we forget, whom we are supposed to be serving. We become so lost that we serve nobody else but just ourselves. That was what happened to me. Whether it is in the medical, the dental fraternity, I can tell you, right now in the private practice, sometimes we just advise patients on treatment that is not indicated. Grey areas. And even though it is not necessary, we kind of advocate it. We kind of lose our moral compass along the way because we just want to make money. Worse, I can tell you, over the last few years, we bad mouth our fellow colleagues, our fellow competitors in the industry. We have no qualms about it. My challenge to you is not to lose that moral compass. I learnt it the hard way. I hope you don’t ever have too. Secondly, a lot of us will start to get numb to our patients. Whether it is Government hospitals or private practice, I can tell you when I was in the hospital, with stacks of patient folders, I couldn’t wait to get rid of those folders as soon as possible, and get patients out of my consultation room as soon as possible because there is just so many, and that’s a reality. It becomes a job, a very routine job. And this is just part of it. Do I truly know how the patient feels back then? No, I don’t. The fears and anxiety and all, do I truly understand what they are going through? I don’t, not until when this happens to me and I think that is one of the biggest flaws in our system. We are trained to be healthcare providers, professional, and all and yet we don’t know how exactly they feel. I’m not asking you to get involved emotionally. I don’t think that is professional but do we actually make a real effort to understand their pain and all? Most of us won’t, alright, I can assure you. So don’t lose it. My challenge to you is to always be able to put yourself in your patient’s shoes. Because the pain, the anxiety, the fear are very real even though it’s not real to you, it’s real to them. So don’t lose that. 70

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL A. Talk by the Late Dr. Richard Teo (Continued) Right now I’m in the midst of my 5th cycle of my chemotherapy. I can tell you it’s a terrible feeling. It’s just suffering, a lousy feeling, throwing up. And even with whatever little energy I have now I try to reach out to other cancer patients because I truly understand what pain and suffering is like. But it’s kind of a little too late and too little. You guys have a bright future ahead of you with all the resources and energy, so I’m going to challenge you to go beyond your immediate patients. To understand that there are people out there who are truly in pain, truly in hardship. Don’t get the idea that only poor people suffer. It is not true. For all you know they are happier than you and me. There are people who are suffering mentally, physically, with hardship, emotionally, financially and so on and so forth, and they are real. We choose to ignore them or we just don’t want to know that they exist. So think about it alright, even as you go on to become professionals and dental surgeons and all. You can reach out to these people who are in need. Whatever you do you can make a large difference to them. I’m now at the receiving end so I know how it feels. When I faced death, when I had too, I focused only on what is essential. The irony is that a lot of times, only when we learn how to die then we learn how to live. I know it sounds very morbid for this morning but it’s the truth, this is what I’m going through. Don’t let society tell you how to live. Don’t let the media tell you what you’re supposed to do. Those things happened to me. I led this life thinking certain things were going to bring me happiness. I hope that you will think about it and decide for yourself how you want to live your own life. Not according to what other people tell you to do. You have to decide whether you want to serve yourself, and whether you are going to make a difference in somebody else’s life because true happiness doesn’t come from serving yourself. There is nothing wrong with being rich or wealthy. I think it’s absolutely alright, because God has blessed. So many people are blessed with good wealth, but the trouble is I think a lot of us can’t handle it. The more we have, the more we want. I’ve gone through it, the deeper the hole we dig, the more we get sucked into it. So much so that we worship wealth and lose focus. Instead of worshipping God, we worship wealth. It’s just a human instinct. It’s just so difficult to get out of it. I’d say that the earlier we sort out the priorities in our lives, the better it is. I had to learn it the hard way. The transcript above is taken from a speech by the Late Doctor Richard Teo. (1972 – 2012) 71

“I just wish the world was twice as big and half of it was still unexplored.” - Sir David Attenborough B. An Interview with Sir David Attenborough – 89 Years of Age

(Transcript recorded at age 87)

Sir David Frederick Attenborough OM CH CVO CBE FRS FZS FSA is an English broadcaster and naturalist. His career as the face and voice of natural history programs has endured for over 60 years. Now at age 89, Sir David Attenborough can’t get around like he used to. He doesn’t complain but would obviously prefer it wasn’t so. “A walk in the countryside or along the towpath of the Thames is a good way to restore your sense of proportion, sort things out, get some sense of stability,” he says. “Whether it’s joy or grief – or the many things in between joy and grief: financial problems, legal problems, friendship problems – the natural world is a great source of solace,” he says. Sir David explains: “my legs aren’t what they were, so walking is not a great joy to me anymore. I can walk for about a quarter of an hour or so.” And yes, he’s known grief in his life, particularly when his beloved wife Jane, whom he describes as “my anchor” died suddenly from a brain hemorrhage in 1997. At the time Sir David was filming in New Zealand on the series “The Life Of Birds” when Jane collapsed in the kitchen with a brain hemorrhage. He flew back immediately and found her alive but in a coma. The hospital doctor said she might be able to register his presence if he spoke to her and held her hand. As he wrote in his memoir, “Life On Air”, “She did, and gave my hand a squeeze.” He spent that evening in hospital with her. The next day she died. “The focus of my life, the anchor had gone. Now I was lost,” he wrote. David threw himself into work, but missed his wife terribly in his hours alone. Has that changed over the years? “No, not really,” he says. “But the amount of time that you spend alone is very small.”

72

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL B. An Interview with Sir David Attenborough (Continued) “I spend hours by myself, but not like some of my pals who go and sit in the Himalayas looking for snow leopards.” “Obviously, there’s a joy in companionship. I’ve got companions. One of the joys of making films is you’re a little unit, a little group.” At 87, Sir David continues to wring every possible joy out of life. It’s the way he’s always been, and the way in which he has endeared himself to generations of television viewers with his glorious natural history programs. He now walks with the aid of a stick but thanks his “lucky stars” that he is still making wildlife documentaries at the age of 87. Just two years ago, Sir David returned to Madagascar, an island he first visited half a century ago when filming for the natural history program Zoo Quest. Madagascar has altered dramatically since his first visit. Eighty per cent of its native forest has been destroyed, the human population has quadrupled and many of its unique species are on the brink of extinction. Yet it remains an enchanting place. In February 2014, Sir David featured in a one hour BBC special. Here Sir David reminisces about the BBC in the 1950s and how his early recordings influenced his later experiences in wildlife programming. It will feature some of the 700 people recorded in Britain and Ireland, aged from 6 to 96, as part of the BBC’s project to gather songs, tales, customs and dialects. “Recording David Attenborough and the Natural History of Folk for BBC Radio 2 brought back many fond memories of making The Song Hunter with Alan Lomax,” says Sir David. “I thoroughly enjoyed delving into the archive to re-visit and reminisce about some of the key moments.” Among the anecdotes Sir David shares a tale of how Lomax “blew the entire £150 budget for the series on train fares”, by bringing half a dozen women from the Hebrides to perform tweed songs. “It wasn’t my finest hour,” said Sir David. 73

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL B. An Interview with Sir David Attenborough (Continued) The ground breaking 1979 series, ‘Life on Earth’ - in which David famously whispered “There is more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla than any other animal I know” while locked in electrifying eye contact with a Rwandan mountain gorilla that had affectionately groomed him - was watched by an estimated 500 million people worldwide. Half a billion viewers - staggering! There are some beasts he’d rather not get too intimate with. “I don’t like rats, I’ve never made a secret of that - they are the ultimate horrible thing,” admitted Sir David, before recalling his dreaded rodent encounter during the filming of ‘The Life of Mammals’. “For the first time in nearly a quarter of a century I had a very bad stomach upset in India. I went and sat on the loo and got rid of the entire contents of my stomach, as one does. Well, I was sitting there... and a rat came up from between my legs from the loo,” shuddered Attenborough. “He was wet, I have to tell you!” he concluded with humor. In the U.S. Attenborough is perhaps best known for the “Life on Earth” series that was broadcast on PBS in the 1980s. On the other side of the Atlantic he is an institution, recently winning a BBC poll to find the greatest living British icon. However, his work has often been diluted for an American audience, with his masterful narrations for “Planet Earth and Life” re-recorded by Alec Baldwin and Oprah Winfrey before they were broadcast on the “Discovery” channel. There have also been accusations that the U.S. network sought to downplay climate change in the shows. In fact, Attenborough says he has finally grown sick of America’s attitude to climate change. “I think it’s very sad that people won’t accept evidence for what it says—it’s extraordinary that one of the wealthiest, materially advanced societies in the world can support irrational myths in that way,” he said. “That they should do it privately is up to them but since what they do effects the whole world it’s pretty serious that they should not accept that humanity has been responsible for these changes that are absolutely evident to everyone else.” Attenborough has made a career of resisting controversy, often describing himself as “a reporter” with no views of his own. He does also have sympathy for those who resist the prevailing science on climate change. “There are very good reasons why people should not wish to accept it, because it interferes with their business,” he said. “I would much prefer it wasn’t true—but it is true and unless we can do something about it, we are going to be in trouble.” “Never before in history has the entire world been able to speak to one another. We are at the beginning of an extraordinary evolution as a species—one species is able to communicate instantly with every member,” Attenborough says, referring to advanced subsonic sound technology.

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL B. An Interview with Sir David Attenborough (Continued) Sir David has two children, Robert and Susie, who have grown up to have children of their own, and many of his loved ones have died. Does he, consider his own mortality? “Oh, all the time”, he says. “We’re all going to die.” “I’ve no idea what’s going to happen, how can you be terrified?” “I only hope I don’t have too painful or too lingering a death, but the idea that I shall become extinguished doesn’t trouble me particularly.” Three years ago, David’s brother, Richard (who was 87 at the time), suffered a serious fall at his home. Richard is a celebrated actor and director of Lord Attenborough. Richard lost his daughter and granddaughter in the Asian Tsunami in 2004. David talks about his brother’s fall and loss. “He fell downstairs and damaged his brain, so was unconscious for a long time. He’s now back but he’s in a wheelchair.” “We all change and old age brings changes,” he says, pulling the sort of face that says I wish it wasn’t so but it is. “You can have a conversation with him. I go down and see him at the weekend. We have our jokes, the ones we’ve had since we were kids.” “If you lose your daughter and your granddaughter, it’s a body blow.” “The slow deterioration, the personality change and the dependence is what scares one about death”, he says. “We just hope it doesn’t involve too much pain, either to you or the people who have to look after you.” “I’m just extraordinarily fortunate,” he says and reaches for the coffee table to touch wood. Sir David’s home is in Richmond, Surrey, where he has lived for more than 50 years. Susie, his daughter lives in Woking but comes in several times a week. Sir David shared the house with his wife and raised the family here. His son, Robert, is an anthropologist in Australia. It has never occurred to Sir David to leave his current home. So much of his life is bound up here, in this warm, loved place stuffed with books, fossils and memories. “I’ve been broadcasting for 60 years. It’s unbelievable. I’ve been earning a living for 60 years,” and these aren’t just empty words. Sir David genuinely believes himself to be one of the luckiest men alive. With his 90th birthday on the horizon, he says he has no plans to give up making documentaries. “It isn’t because I exercise, or diet, or live a virtuous life or something, it’s just that fortunately my legs still work. They don’t work as well as they did, but they can get me around,” he said. “That I should be invited to keep doing it is just a huge delight and privilege, and I propose to take advantage of it.”

Super Bugs and Infections Are On The Rise

Superbugs are on the rise. These superbugs have several names. They include carbapenem-resistant entero-bacteriaceae or CRE; and necrotizing fasciitis (more commonly known as the deadly flesh eating disease) and are often referred to as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) staph infections. In March 2013, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an alert saying lethal germs are on the increase. Many of these superbugs emerge in hospital and other healthcare settings where patients are at a greater risk of infection due to invasive medical devices being used and patients having weak immune systems and open wounds. However, in more recent years some superbugs have been making their way into the community. “These are nightmare bacteria that present a triple threat,” said Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “They’re resistant to nearly all antibiotics. They have high mortality rates, killing half of people with serious infections. And they can spread their resistance to other bacteria.” It is also concerning that very few pharmaceutical companies are creating blockbuster antibiotics due to the huge costs involved. “The economics just aren’t there,” said David Nix, a Professor at the UA College of Pharmacy. In the first half of 2012, nearly 200 hospitals treated at least one of these infections, Frieden said. About 4% of hospitals have had at least one patient with CRE, along with 18% of long-term, acute-care hospitals, the CDC said. The country has only a narrow “window of opportunity” to act before it’s too late to halt the superbugs’ spread, Frieden said. It is also recognised that sicker people are walking the streets today due to a variety of issues (length of hospital stays have decreased dramatically, people cannot afford to go to the Doctor, etc). 76

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL Super Bugs and Infections Are On The Rise (Continued) What You Can Do To Reduce Risks According to a recent study undertaken by the University of Arizona, your computer keyboard has more than 20,000 microbes per square inch — at least 400 times more germs than a toilet seat. •

Wash your hands regularly throughout the day, and for at least 20 seconds at a time.

•

Clean your personal items regularly (i.e. cellphone, remote controls, keyboard and mouse) with alcohol swabs or sanitizer wipes.

•

Always wash hands before and after using the restroom and visiting community facilities and retail outlets (i.e.the gym, coffee and retail shops, schools, grocery stores, the Post Office, hospitals etc).

•

Keep any open skin areas covered until they are completely healed. Clean open areas with an antibiotic ointment.

•

If you come into contact with wounds, bandages, skin drainage, or any type of bodily fluids be sure to wear gloves, and carry out proper hand washing immediately afterwards.

•

Do not share your personal items with anyone.

•

If you are a patient at a hospital or medical facility, ask your caregiver to wash his/ her hands before touching you. Some caregivers can transmit MRSA from patient to patient.

•

Keep strengthening your immune system and keep your adult stem cells activated. Stem Cell Worx Intraoral Spray is designed specifically for this purpose.

ARTICLES FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SOUL Super Bugs and Infections Are On The Rise (Continued) British Actress, Leslie Ash Contracted MSSA While In Hospital Leslie Ash, was a leading British Actress in the TV sitcom “Men Behaving Badly” when I lived in the U.K in the 1990s. She is married to Lee Chapman, an ex-Arsenal, West Ham and Leeds footballer and they have two teenage boys. In 2004, Leslie Ash, found herself paralyzed when an MSSA infection (which is similar to MRSA) attacked her spinal tissue, which was introduced through an infected epidural shot she received at London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital while she received treatment for a cracked rib and punctured lung. The infection caused permanent spinal damage and in 2008 she won record damages of £5million from the hospital responsible, which was settled out of court. Leslie has had her fair share of medical misfortunes. In August 2002 her lips swelled to twice their normal size after she suffered an allergic reaction following a lip filler injection administered by a practitioner who injected silicone rather than the more commonly used collagen. Leslie was ridiculed in the press for her “trout pout” and her lips have taken some years to recover, with the help of corrective procedures. Leslie, at 53 years of age, talked of botched lip procedure: “I trusted her, and it didn’t occur to me to question what she was doing. That was a mistake I will always regret.” Leslie has spoken out about her ordeals in an effort to help others and also took part in a documentary called Leslie Ash: Face To Face. She is a fighter and each day she and her husband go to the gym. Leslie says: “When I’m working out I’m not in pain. I’m doing something.” “I go on the cross-trainer. As long as I can hold on and I’ve got some point of reference to the ground, I’m fine. I do a power walk on an incline.”

Allergic Reaction To Lip Injection

‘I’m still on painkillers and will be for the rest of my life,’ she says. “I’m prescribed six a day, but I cut it down to three. They make you a bit, um, very forgetful. You’re halfway through a sentence and forget what you were talking about, go into a room and forget why. And dates! I have to write everything down!” “There will be things I won’t ever be able to do - jump, run, dance. The one thing I can do is inform people.” References: http://www.guardian.co.uk 78http://www.dailymail.co.uk http://www.prpseminar.com/category/events/

Bio Nano Chips and PillCams are the future of Healthcare Diagnostics

The Programmable Bio-Nano Chip system is the future of healthcare diagnostics. Six clinical trials have been carried out by the McDevitt Lab in Houston. The clinical trials were carried out between 2009 to 2013 and involved testing the programmable bionano-chip for major diseases in the areas of cardiac heart disease, oral cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and drugs of abuse. The programmable bio-nano-chip technology has the potential to change the practice of medicine by incorporating key advances in software, electronics and communication sectors for early detection of disease. This new technology enables new medical diagnostics to be delivered, via high performance, accurate data at a reduced cost that will be directly submitted to the healthcare provider and patient. These nano bio chip sensors are capable of measuring the molecules of life that are present in complex bio-fluid samples taken from blood, urine and saliva. This information is then reprogrammed, like software, so that new clinical applications can be created quickly and in a cost-effective manner. Major work is now underway to swiftly move these medical micro-devices from the bench to the bedside. The video below gives a quick overview.

The PillCam Currently, the PillCam is being designed for those patients who are not candidates for colonoscopies, which translates to nearly 750,000 in the US alone. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just approved a digestible pill (DP) called the PillCam, designed by Given Imaging, Ltd (GIL). GIL is an Israeli-based corporation that develops defense systems for military applications. This concept utilizes a battery powered mini camera in the form of a pill that can take high-speed photos of the intestinal tract for an estimated 8 hours while recording information that can later be retrieved by a physician. These pill-cams have the ability to get to areas where the standard colonoscopy doesn’t. The standard colonoscope uses a thin, flexible tube that has a small video camera attached to the colonoscope, so the Doctor can take pictures. This looks at the colon and lower part of the small intestine. Another test called sigmoidoscopy shows only the rectum and the lower part of the colon. However, current colonoscopy procedures do have restrictions in terms of what can be imaged, and they are quite intrusive. The PillCam is a clear advancement. Vitamin D Recommendations Have Been Far Too Low

A calculation error may have skewed the vitamin D recommendations by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), Institute of Medicine (IOM). They are far too low, by a factor of ten, say researchers at UC San Diego and Creighton University. Researchers submitted a letter of challenge, published in the journal Nutrients, which confirmed a calculation error that was also noted by other investigators using a data set from a different population. Dr. Cedric F. Garland, Dr.P.H., adjunct professor at UC San Diego’s Department of Family Medicine and Public Health said his group confirmed findings published by Dr. Paul Veugelers from the University of Alberta School of Public Health, which were reported last October in the same journal. “Both these studies suggest that the IOM underestimated the requirement substantially,” said Garland. “The error has broad implications for public health regarding disease prevention and achieving the stated goal of ensuring that the whole population has enough vitamin D to maintain bone health.” The recommended intake of vitamin D specified by the IOM is 600 IU/day through age 70 years, and 800 IU/day for older ages. “Calculations by us and other researchers have shown that these doses are only about one-tenth those needed to cut incidence of diseases related to vitamin D deficiency,” Garland explained. Robert Heaney, M.D., of Creighton University, wrote: “We call for the NAS-IOM and all public health authorities concerned with transmitting accurate nutritional information to the public to designate, as the RDA, a value of approximately 7,000 IU/day from all sources.” Garland noted, “This intake is well below the upper level intake specified by IOM as safe for teens and adults, 10,000 IU/day.” References 1. We love it when our clients in their 80s call and say “I just googled you.” Just recently were heard from: ØØ Frank, 83, an ex-Veteran who is extremely knowledgeable about health supplements and what works and what doesn’t. ØØ Stan, 86, who only stopped working full time 2 years ago. He still gets called into his psychology practice to help out. ØØ Joyce, 80, who has been busy trimming trees, spending time with her family, and she is loving her new apple mac laptop. Thanks so much for making our day.
