After the previous semester, where issues of form, symbolism through memory, analysis of human behavior through ritual, considering the building envelope via mediation and finally harnessing all in a final project; the second semester raised the bar of architectural progression. Semester II was a design studio lesson in a host of design initiatives; but chiefly tectonics and sustainability, the manner in which building elements connect and their materiality, fusing in a pleasing architectural gesture. Sustainability meant achieving designs that impacted minimally on their environment and its inhabitants; the ability to sustain themselves as works of architecture.

design charrette Charrette [suh-ret] - a french term that refers to a collaborative and intense period of design activity which a group of designers drafts a solution to a design problem. The first project of the semester, called for an understanding of tectonics. The charrette required us to design an interactive piece of outdoor furniture; it was an opportunity to create respite for the architecture students

Lecturer: Students in group: Duration: Date:

Design Charrette as a group project, made us react critically to a design challenge, it was the first exploration in tectonics. We made a conscious effort to examine the materials and their ability to connect in a simple manner.

The blue box as we dubbed it, was conceptually derived as a portion or extension of the elevator shaft, taken and placed on the ground outside the Architecture school. The construct was made of PVC pipes filled with sand, stacked to serve as seating. They would be placed in a ply board framed box, which articulated the form of the street furniture. Its positioning and relationship to the school represented a casual means of socializing.

site analysis - master plan A site analysis is an inventory of basic data & conditions - physical and otherwise, involving research, examination, and synthesis as it relates to a specific site or location. The goal of this project was to captured the essence of an on campus site located between the department of languages and the department of business.

Lecturer: Students in group: Duration: Date:

David Cuthbert, Allison West-Martin, Michael Stanley, Mlela Matandara, K. Shaw-Hines, Laurie Ferron Entire class one week 25 January - 01 February, 2011

The site analysis required us to examine the area bounded by the faculty of education & Liberal Sciences (FELS) to the north, to the east and west by the Utech Printers and Human Resources Department respectively, and by the School of Business Administration to the south.

Important presentation sheets

The importance of the site analysis was to understand the human and natural relationships of the space. Also the establishing of genuine traditions and history of site were vital. Observation of the site enabled us to document and subsequently analyses the site conditions. Additionally observing the materials on the site allowed for a more informed design decision.

master plan To develop or improve an area of land via a long-term plan that achieves balance through the fusing of all elements. The goal is to spark the interest of the plan’s users, where change would be experienced over the short, medium and long-term. The master plan called for a larger scale of design for a public space, without designing specific structures.

Lecturer: Students in group: Duration: Date:

The process of design called for a group effort, given the scale of the area, various zones were able to be achieved. Areas of study and eat, movement and pause and respite were created. The overall design was comprised of a host of architectural elements, pathways, ramps and platforms helped to delineated the spaces. Homogeneity of materials was used with the application of perforated metal, as seating, and screening elements.

Views of the proposed design

Beyond the specifics of design an effort was made to preserve the existing trees and add to the flora, to create an environment, that would be pleasing and evoke the spirit of the space. Specifically the respite and study areas created ideal spaces to develop focal elements, via the water feature and the Chinese bamboo inspired barrier. Sketch

pavilion Pavilion [puh-vil-yun] - from the Latin word, pÄ piliĹ? for butterfly; a light, open structure typically used for shelter or a variety of functions - concerts, exhibits, etc. The project called for an exploration of tectonics, how and why we use building materials and the manner in which they connect. The issues of form, balance and proportion, helped to evoke a structure where the limits of the materials were appreciated.

The mushroom was the form given to be explored, The mushroom’s structure required a singular support at it’s centre. The mushroom was explored in various forms, as seen in the images.

Some of the criteria for the work of architecture was it could not have any load bearing walls, a controlling grid of one metre intervals was used, a maximum of four loading points to the ground, a maximum of 4m from the ground and a maximum floor area of 12m2. governed the design.

Mock models

The presentation of the pavilion in the space was integral to the completion of the process from master plan to the pavilion. The proposed pavilion would facilitate the registering of students, promotions and fund rasing.

Pavilion was the first individual design, a learning experience in the tectonics of steel. The sheet metal, steel plate, and steel framing elements came together to make a pleasing work of architecture.

site analysis - rural In addition to the site analysis, an intervention was part of the rural visit. Intervention [in-ter-ven-shuhn] An act of imposing, that in sculpture and architecture suggest alternative way to investigate the role of landscape and man made elements. The site analysis was a visit to rural area of Maryland, St. Andrew, Jamaica. The genius of the rural site was to be captured, through observation and documentation.

Lecturer: Students in group: Duration: Date:

David Cuthbert, Allison West-Martin, Michael Stanley, Mlela Matandara, K. Shaw-Hines, Laurie Ferron Entire class one week 25 February - 04 March, 2011

The intervention, inspired by the works of artist and sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, was titled ‘Fallen leaves of tone’. it was an intervention that described the season and essence of the site. Additionally the project required the design of a bridge that would recycle or use the materials that existed on the site. The bridge proposed was to be easily constructed. Sketch of intervention

The site analysis separated the river course into 3 sites of 50 meters long and 30 meters wide, attempting to capture the cascading element of a river course and the valley that the cross section depicts. The data collected was vast and made for a thorough investigation of the site, when it was put together.

rural - shelter The shelter reintroduced tectonics in a more comprehensive manner. Tectonic [tek-ton-ik] - originally in Greek to mean the art of knowing how to build, it has come to mean the technical, physical and intellectual expression through construction. The design would require the development of a work of architecture that fuses thorough detailed connections , that would achieved appropriate scale, meaning and shape.

Lecturer: Students in group: Duration: Date:

Michael Stanley, Mlela Matandara Individual three weeks 04 March - 22 March, 2011

The shelter began as an idea of recycling the materials that were available on the site, then progressed to designing around the notion of the materials, texture and visual they created.

precedent Precedent [pres-i-duhnt] - any act, decision, or case that serves as a guide or justification for subsequent situations. The precedent of Fathy House, Sidi Krier, Egypt, by Architect Hassan Fathy served as the guide and inspiration for the subsequent project. The precedent acts as an opportunity to analyze issues of climate, form, section and plan, symmetry and balance, circulation and hierarchy among others.

Lecturer: Students in group: Duration: Date:

Fathy House, is a work of architecture of the Islamic vernacular, it encorporates the use of architectural elements synonymous with the Egyptian, culture and desert region. The design achieves strong gestures of courtyard, domed and vaulted elements.

live + work Working at home and living at work, was the essence of the live + work project. This project served as the culmination of the architectural lessons learnt during the semester. Once again paying close attention to materials and structure was essential for the project. Designing conscious of public and private, and the issues involved in the low income community of Eleston Flats, south east Papine, was integral

The Live+ Work project, was an oppurtunity to investigate how the house becomes a dwelling when it is designed to be inhabited by a specific client. For this project I was asked to design a suitable live + work dwelling for a barber.

exploring form and site section

The design had some criteria it had to fit, the residential space had to be 60m2, the work space had to be 25m2, parking was granted 25m2 and designed green space had to account for 50% of the total 85m2. the papaya and orange, in the understanding section workshop

The project lessons in understanding sections, this designing in section, was one of the main focuses of the project.

Progress from section to plan, and subsequently resloving the plan

Initial models

Early exploration was done through the making of models, this continued to the final model it was used to consistently develop form.

live + work

The progression of the chosen form

The barber as provider needs a simple living space yet a nearby work space that can afford him the conviences he desires. As a designer I chose to respect the site and community creating a design that communicated with the flat roofs of the neighbourhood, while giving the dwelling strong architectural elements of courtyard and thresholds.
