landscape

(perspectives │ plan)

dale i sunnfjord is the capitol of the fjaler municipality. it is a village laying in a valley made by the impressive dalsfjorden in western norway. the valley is crossed by a river flowing in the fjord dividing it into two parts. the valley is surrounded in the west and the east by mountains which arise up to 300 meters. the waterfront is shaped by the fjord. there is an approximation to the other side which is connected by a bridge in that place. the coastline runs in a hollow where dale is situated. when staying on the waterfront the view is bounded along the fjord, but rather the start not the end are visible.

wall

(plan │ section)

staying on the waterfront of dale looking towards north a huge wall is arising in front of the face. it is almost 760 meters high. will you be afraid in front of the giant? maybe it could coming closer. in the section the small boat house laying on the waterfront of dale almost disappears in compared to the mountain fløyen. whole dale looks so small compared to this impressive landscape. but having a glance below the water surface the plain land and the huge mountains seems to be still connected.

d territories

(plan)

according to the commune plan dale is classified in different territories. there are two residential areas on the outskirts, a green strip along the river dalselva and a service strip stretching along the complete length from the harbour to the entrance/exit of dale from where pulses of development are coming from. embraced by a distant landscape dale gets its unique shape. a residential b service area c close landscape d distant landscape

axis

(plan)

according to the commune plan several visual noticeable and passable axes should be retained and protected. they are connecting the forest at the foot of the mountains and the water of the fjord. sometimes you have to go through shopping malls or libraries to continue your way. but however they should always be a common value for everyone and arise public spaces in dale.

coast trail

(perspectives │ plan)

according to the commune plan there should be always the possibility to walk along the coastline of dale. it should be seen as an common value as well. sometimes some small boat houses disturb the way. but all together the possibility is given. walking along the coast you walk past a foreign fan-like building called transplant (a). it is reaching almost the coast but there is still some place to walk by. just two minutes later you will pass an typical norwegian red wooden house used as a former ferry terminal which is spreading on a ledge towards the water (b). wherever you walk along the view to the fjord is always clear.

borders

(sections │ plan)

attempting the coastline of dale a platform, almost like a terrace, a serving tray or you can even call it a table appears. there occur three different borders made out of the surfaces water, asphalt and grass. between water and asphalt there is a hard border. the water smash into the asphalt but it cannot reach the top of it. another border is more softer when water and grass hit each other. the border is more gradual than a hard edge. when grass and asphalt meet each other at almost the same height they only shape a small but still visible edge.

borders

(diagram │ plan)

attempting the percentage of asphalt and grass the grey and hard surface on this platform wins. but it seems that almost the whole village core of dale is surfaced by it. there are no sidewalks or paths, you just walk on the single track roads. compared with setting a table in the first case the main dish is embedded in a mess of supplements and become a part of the whole set up table. the contrary appears on the grey and hard surface. here only several main dishes dominate the white empty table.

courses

(perspectives │ plan)

like on a covered table or let it call platform several dishes or buildings are appearing. they surround and enclose the space. in five courses the different dishes are served. the menu starts with two appetizer. then they are two main courses where you can choose always between two different meals. last but not least there is also a dessert at the end of the menu.

first appetizer entrance

(perspective)

the platform is narrowed by two buildings towards the village core. on the one side there is a bigger building which was used many years as a hotel. but now it is just a bigger apartment house. it has a flat hip roof and forms the biggest pilar at the entrance of the platform. the other smaller one is made by a typical norwegian living house with a pitch roof, several dormers, balconies and protuberances.

first appetizer entrance scenarios

(plans │ perspectives)

when the three buildings which marks the entrance of the table are cleared up several situations are formed. depending which one is put away the former narrow line is getting bigger. the first case just show an smaller intervention while in the second one the entrance almost melts with the bigger empty platform to an thick sliced line through dale. the last case forms a zig zag entrance line which disclose the view to the former ferry house from the village core and don’t hide it anymore. as a result there would be a new visual axis where the view still ends with fjord but with the former ferry house in the horizont.

second appetizer surfaces

(perspective)

the platform is marked by several borders of surfaces. on the one side it is of course marked by its edge to the water. but it is also divided by a grey and hard surface and a more softer and green one. it seems to be a pattern like on a tablecloth. the pattern starts from a narrow line to a huge balloon-like shape which is on side bordered by the green surface and on the other side just surrounded by some placed buildings.

second appetizer paths

(plans │ perspectives)

changing the surfaces also the paths or ways to go by car are changing. the platform could divide into two parts. in this case the green side is clear divided from the grey and hard one where several buildings are placed. whereas in the second case the complete waterfront line is taken over by the green surface including the former ferry house. the asphalt is clear cut towards the industrial buildings and the village core. the last scenario shows how it would be if whole dale is only be passable by a paved surface along the coast meanwhile dale is embedded complete in a green surface without any asphalt and roads.

first main course former ferry house

(perspective)

a long stretched red painted wooden house with a flat pitch roof is laying complete exposed from all other buildings and the village in the back on the edge of the table. it faces towards the fjord with the big wall of mountains in front. even if seems to be the only dish on an empty table it forms among other waterside buildings the coastline of dale.

stefanie kรถnig | 32

33 | reflections

first main course first choice

(perspectives │ plan)

attempting the former ferry house it is not clear if it really belongs to the table connected to the village core of dale. maybe it feels gravitated more to the landscape and wants to be a part of it. therefore it break off, left behind a big hole in the platform and flows along the fjord on the water surface like a small island searching for its right place in the world.

stefanie kรถnig | 34

35 | reflections

first main course second choice

(plan │ perspective │ inside)

if it still belongs to the table it could be add or stack by several similar dishes into a huge burger tower which still shows the purity of the shape but more complex and not dale-like anymore. inside you don’t see the chaos, but you will feel a difference to a normal shaped building. also fan-like like transplant but here above and not next to each other directs in each level the view to another point of the fjord.

stefanie kรถnig | 36

37 | reflections

second main course stranger

(perspective)

some years a go a stranger, a foreigner, a transplant was landed on the coastline of dale. it opens like a book its pages towards the water. the fan-like shaped building is used by designers as a working and thinking space. its several axis cross whole dale but no one knows where they should lead or what they are meaning. with its flat roof it forms a new kind of water facing houses along the coastline.

second main course first choice

(perspectives │ plan)

maybe the stranger leaves the place at the coastline so quick how it came. the nature would regain a big meadow along the open mouth of the river and the fjord. from the platform the view to the river and the outskirts of dale would be clear again. the coastline of dale would be emptier but without any disturbing foreign shape facing the fjord.

stefanie kรถnig | 40

41 | reflections

second main course second choice

(plan │ perspectives)

going back to the roots and reflecting the typical shape of a norwegian waterfront faced house the coastline of dale should look like this. several pitch roof houses would stand side by side in a row at the edge of the water. the platform would be filled up again but now with a more typical norwegian face. the size of them is a little bit difficult to decide. maybe they should be more approached to the big size of factories and industrial buildings at the coast line. but then the small living houses in the back would disappear. maybe there are gaps between the separate buildings but according to their predecessor they could be also fixed together.

stefanie kรถnig | 42

43 | reflections

dessert

(perspective)

last but not least there is a dessert in case of being still hungry. all together there are several possibilities how the chosen place could be transformed. maybe all the founded shapes and forms and amounts should be doubled or tripled. there would be not anymore a big hole made out of the grey and hard asphalt surface. there could be more standardized shaped buildings facing the water and allows different axis and paths crossing this platform. but then is is not more terrace or serving tray. it would be more an overloaded and messy table.
