BRODIAN’S BANTER THE FUTURE OF TV Stewart Brodian

BY STEWART BRODIAN

Some of the older TV shows are no longer shown because they are considered politically incorrect Dukes Of Hazzard: (Rebel flag on the car), F-Troop (Portrayal of American Indians), Hogans Heroes (use of ethnic slur at the Germans) and yet, there’s still plenty of political incorrectness going on in today’s television. Women are still exploited as objects of sex in everything from comedies to dramas and documentaries. How will future generations view TV of today? How will future generations view the viscicititudes of today - not just from viewing our entertainment of today but evaluating the views of people of our time towards political correctness and still exhibiting such ideals in our entertainment? We will definitely be viewed by future generations as complete hypocrites!

Thelma Todd, Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard, Francis Farmer, Carole Landis, Veronica Lake, Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, Joi Lansing, Cleo Moore, Jayne Mansfield, Barbara Ruick, Leigh Snowdon, Barbara Nichols, Barbara Peyton, Marilyn Maxwell, Marie McDonald, Some of you may recall, I did an exclusive cover Marie Wilson, Diana Dors, Sharon Tate, Inger story on Mamie last May ... It was a Hollywood Stevens, Farrah Fawcett, Anna Nicole Smith dream come true ... More recently, Alexxis Steele, the amazing woman who created Steel Notes and Dorothy Stratten were all, in varying deMagazine came up with the idea to do a story about grees, famous, blonde, beautiful, and billed women staying young, sexy and vibrant at any age as sex goddesses of their respective eras. ... She said that Mamie Van Doren is the Poster Gal Most of them did not live to see fifty-five. that women aspire to be like! ... Like I said... Mamie Our profession is perhaps the most competiis a dream ... She loved the idea and here she is ... tive in the world. For, to be glamorous, to be The pictorial speaks for itself ... but ... listen to her words of wisdom ... beautiful, is to be doomed eventually to be disappointed.

Getting Older is Essential By Mamie Van Doren Memory gratifies. Time is a grand vintner, bottling up memories in your cerebral cellars to be mellowed with time, later decanted to the next generation. I have been blessed with a rich life during which I have met presidents, kings, racing drivers, jocks, and just about every other imaginable sort of celebrity. I am often asked to recall those encounters--and in the spirit of expanding the bounds of good taste, I often do. Who would have dreamed that the Eisenhower years or even the swingin’ sixties would become so interesting to a generation that never lived through them? And who would have dreamed that I would get so much pleasure out of telling them about it?

As my friend, the late Dorothy Lamour, one of the most glamorous women I have ever known, once said, “Time keeps rollin’ on.” She shrugged. “What’re you going to do?” Answer: Get as old as you can. It’s essential. Whether or not you make your living being beautiful, the longer you live, the more you recognize that special something deep inside all of us that radiates beauty. Regardless of the outside of you, the beauty inside you will never change, for as long as you live. Shine that beauty on someone else. Time passes quickly and it is the best way to leave your mark. In the memory of others is true immortality.

Personally, the greatest thing about getting older is being here to enjoy it. That may seem profoundly obvious at first glance, Steel Notes Magazine | 23

The John Loretto Interview by The Gypsy Poet Hollywood has some hard-working, talented people one person who has blown me away with his energy, style and humor as got to be writer/producer/actor, John Loretto. In this interview, he is revealing, witty and one of the most soulful people I have met so far in Tinseltown! And trust me, this guy is someone you’d love in your circle for anything! Ladies & Gentlemen, the incredible John Loretto!

GP: Hello, John! You gotta talk to me! You got some good stuff cookin’ in your corner! What’s new that you are doing? JL: what I have 4 amazing stories in my corner with an amazing writing parrner. Which we both will convert 3 film scripts stories into a book. The first one is A FLOWER GROWS.is a romantic, suspense WW2 drama about the Holocaust. 2. A light in the Dark is a magical realism drama. A young man looks for his purpose in the new world. 3. American arising is a dark comedy about a scam artist who rips off older women.

GP: You’ve been an actor in some pretty challenging films such as Chicano Blood and Mexican Gangster. What were the experiences on those films like and who did you get to play JL: these films were very interesting..and also a learning experience. I got to play a very interesting characters that we hear everyday in life in the different diversity and the different light of the social world. I say this when inwas a kid at 5 sat in my garden,

lilly, and the rose; my whole life was forgoten, but my passion rose., for the beauty of wildlife which was there at my toes. Something called the Marsh frogs that came from out of the blue, this was so beautiful I could hardly belive it was true. With a glass of wine in my hand, I felt as if I owened all the land. If I was to go to Heaven tomorrow, then I would truely have no sorrow; because I have seen the world at its best, it’s an experence that is a cut above the rest. Life cannot be better when life is wild and free so please keep that axe well away from the tree. We can all find a life with passion for the green, but if we abide by it, that remains to be seen. God bless you all

GP: What inspired you to take on these roles? JL: i would say i like being different .. and its a start to better things in life.. In life there are people that will hurt us and cause us pain, but we must learn to forgive and forget and not hold grudges. In life there are mistakes we will make, but we must learn from our wrongs and grow from them. In life there are regrets we will have to live with, but we must learn to leave the past behind and realize it is something we can’t change that’s why i play them. In life there are people we will loose forever and can’t have back, but we must learn to let go and move on. In life there are going to be obstacles that will cause interference, but we must learn to overcome these challenges and grow stronger. In life there are fears that will hold us back from what we want, but we must learn to fight them with the courage

AGING GRACEFULLY INTERVIEW WITH HOLLYWOOD ACTRESS- SONDRA CURRIE BY ALEXXIS STEELE young, vital, and growing older gracefully? Sondra: Well you know, the bottom line is that it’s really up to you whether you want to stay young, vibrant and energized . People decide whether to let their hair go gray or whatever that happens to be, but I think staying youthful, aside from really taking good care of yourself is really a combination of body, mind and spirit. It is all in your point of view. I think as long as you maintain your passion and curiosity every single day, there really are so many things to energize you. There are ladies in their 80’s and 90’s still dancing in the big Boomtown show, putting us to shame, and they look fantastic, and I think it’s because of their lust for life, I think that is exactly what it is and it “Ain’t over ‘til you say it’s over”. I used to have an acting coach who I loved, who passed on in 2008, I knew him for 17 years, and all the voices that pop in your head saying your too old or not pretty enough or you are too this or that he said you know put one foot in front of the other, and just keep sweeping the alley. People can take pot shots at you the more successful you are. Alexxis: Living in California, is it more of a concern with skin care and skin cancer? Do you stay away from being in the sun?

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with the lovely and talented Star of the Hangover 1, 2, and 3 movies- actress Sondra Currie on what it takes to maintain her youthful vitality, and aging gracefully. Please enjoy reading our candid interview, followed by her bio and film credits.

Alexxis: Sondra, growing up in the business, you followed in the footsteps, of your mother,

Sondra: I stay away from baking in the sun. I always wear a hat; I always wear sunblock, so I am careful, especially with my face. I always wash my face completely before bed and wear a moisturizer. Now I use about 3 or 4 different things before I go to bed. Some of the basic things are right in your kitchen, like egg whites for a mask. I trained myself to sleep on my back in my 20’s, because it is really bad to sleep on your belly or side.

Marie Harmon, and became an actress. Being in the business, always having to look your best

Sondra: There is this new thing out called Nektafirm, which this dermatologist a doctor friend of mine, told me about and it’s just for your neck and declatoge.

what is your take on what is necessary to stay

Alexxis: is that for wrinkling or sagging?

Cherie, Sondra & Marie

Sondra it’s for both, and it really works Alexxis: is it available online? Sondra: Yes it is available online, and probably cheaper than going to your dermatologist. Once a week giving yourself a mask and exfoliating. Alexxis: How do you feel about women as they get older using fillers and Botox?

niece, but I still do jazz. Tap is a really good work out Sondra: I am a strong proponent for it, but you must and a lot of fun. do your research on it. Go to 3 different doctors and get their opinions and ask around. Alexxis: Tell me about the seminar you were doing on aging fantastically I get Botox on a regular basis, but I get it done lightly because being an actress, I still want my face to Sondra: That was put together by a friend of mine be mobile I want to be able to move my eyebrows. and it is all about aging from women from all walks of life. The consensus seems to be in the attitude Alexis: You said that you have a personal trainer? and it is what makes you or breaks you. We are going to do a larger one around February or March. Sondra: Yes and I do and I also have a small gym at I think she wants to expand, so I am going to be my house going down to San Diego. Alexxis: When you work out what do you like to do, Alexxis: So now the book on the life of a redhead, is Pilates or Yoga? that your book? Sondra: No I actually do a circuit, which takes an Sondra: No, actually I started speaking on this a few hour and 10 minutes. Upstairs I have an elliptical years ago, and when it came out about the statistics and a stair stepper. But I still use the tapes that about redheads started to come out, everyone was I have had for years like the old Cindy Crawford like wow, we really are the minority. My PR guy tapes. I have a ton of them and they still work, and from the Hangover movies turned me on to these diet wise I am pretty good about what I eat .I eat two girls who wrote about how to be a redhead. chicken and a lot of vegetables and salads, but I’m not a big pasta person, and I don’t eat sweets. I love That is what the initial concept was, and it has really grown. I was on the cover of the Huntington Post to dance and tap. with Zach from Hangover 1, who also happens to be Alexxis: Ahh yes I had 3 years of classical ballet, but I a redhead. Talking about the life of a redhead, what never did pointe. we need to do, so there are facts from and myths from way back about redheads being witches, and Sondra: I did that too but I gave my shoes to my

Sondra and Brother Don Currie fallen women that other women did not want their men to be around. It’s fascinating. I knew ever since I was a kid there was like a stigma attached to it. Then there is the empowering thing that it is very cool and we stand out and feel good about it and not feel like such an oddity. Ever since I was young the first thing that people would say is oh look at her hair, she has say such beautiful hair and that my hair is my crowning glory. Sondra : well that’s all fine and dandy but then you place way too much importance on your hair, and my hair was long, down to my tush. Alexxis: Who in your family had red hair? Sondra: My Grandmother on my mother’s side had red hair, and of course both Jake (Sister Cherie’s son), and Trevor (Sister Marie’s son) both have red hair like I did when I was a kid. Alexxis: My youngest daughter had red hair like a shiny new copper penny when she was young and people would always ask me if I dyed her hair! Sondra: It is a different kind of adjustment to make, and you have to own it. Alexxis: I look terrible in red hair! When I was a teen I used Sun-In on my hair to make my hair blonde, but it made it red, and my mom had to wind up dying it. Not everyone can wear red hair. My hair was brown, then black for over 20 years before I went blonde again.

curling iron without it looking bad. Sondra: I have always used hot rollers. I can’t blow dry my hair, or it looks like straw, so I let it air dry first, then roll it. I did recently get highlights and low lights put into my hair. So anyway that’s kind of my secrets. Alexxis: Those are very good secrets! That must look very nice, blonde streaks look good with red hair. Sondra: Anyway, so as far as Botox and fillers, I say yes. Alexxis: The assistant editor of the magazine and I were watching video clips of you when you were on the tv show the Golden Girls, and you were marrying Blanche’s Father as the younger woman. Sondra: That was a lot of fun, and it goes into rerun so often, so does Three’s Company, because of TV Land, and all that nostalgia television. Alexxis: I love TV Land, and watch all of the old shows. Sondra: I get a kick out of it, and boy it seems like yesterday! Betty was so amazing and darling and she’s still around, and in her 90’s.

Sondra: That must have taken a lot of conditioning

Alexxis: Yes isn’t she like 93?

Alexxis: Yes it did, and I never had any luck with doing different things with my hair like using a

Sondra: Yes, talking about aging gracefully, that is who you need to talk to about it!

Alexxis: Yes I love Betty White!

Sondra Currie & Family

Sondra: She is a very lovely and supportive woman, and she loves animals. She is somebody we should always pay attention to! Sondra: Do you have any special secrets to share with me? Alexxis: Not really, unfortunately. I think that in California, you probably have a lot more than we do here! Sondra: Well one thing you don’t hear about much is “planing” It has been going on in Japan since the beginning of time. Women out here started doing that about 10-12 years ago and not a lot of people talk about it or anybody in magazines either. Alexxis: Really? What exactly is it? Sondra: You know what it is? The bottom line is it is shaving! It’s like when you used to go the dermatologist or plastic surgeon and they used to do it with like a straight kind of razor Alexxis: Really? Sondra: Yes and it’s almost like Microdermabrasion, which is also one of my big secrets. I get one done about every 3 or 4 months and the guy must be his 80’s and learned it from his mother in Yugoslavia, and he is really the person who kept my skin looking as good as it does all these years and he

Sondra Currie Family Holiday Dinner

just moved to Ohio, so I am like what am I going to do now! But the planing is basically shaving, because it takes off the outer layer of skin. Look at men’s faces. They stay in better shape than women overall because they are always taking off that dead skin every few weeks or so. Alexxis: I have never had a dermabrasion done, but have a friend that is an esthetician Sondra: With all the different lasers and filler they have out now you don’t have to even get a facelift. They do have a lot of little mini things that you can do because it is not fashionable to be pulled and looking weird. So those are all my secrets to aging gracefully! Alexxis: Thank You Sondra for sharing your age defying secrets with us!

Aging Gracefully By Steel Notes Magazine Publisher/Editor-In-Chief, Alexxis Steele photos by Gary Preis In our society today, a lot of emphasis is put on beauty, and looking youthful. I recently saw a post that read: “60 is the new 40”. Now that people are living longer, we are always on the search for that proverbial “Fountain of youth”. My personal beliefs are that there is nothing wrong with wanting to look youthful, vibrant, or sexy, which should never be aged defined. Never be afraid to be who you are at any time, or feel like you have to apologize for it! I was asked to take part in a photo shoot for our magazine issue, but originally hesitated, due to my involvement with the magazine. I decided that it was okay to share these pictures with the world, because I am proud of who I am, and so should every woman! I aspire to be like the two beautiful, sexy and vibrant actresses we are featuring in this issue. The Redhaired beauty, and star of the Hangover 1, 2, and 3 movies- the lovely Sondra Currie, sister of my friend Marie Currie and her twin sister, Cherie Currie, lead vocalist for “The Runaways”, and Hollywood legend and sex kitten- our poster gal for the Fountain Of Youth- Mamie Van Doren..Enjoy!

La Gallaria Marijke

Ladies and Gentlemen and Children of All Ages ... Get ready to leave these mundane days behind ... My name is Marlowe B. West and I am your Ring Leader ... Fasten your seatbelts ... You are about to take a wondrously magical, kaleidoscopic, tour into La Gallaria Marijke ... Marijke’s colourful and creative mind has joined forces with some of the most fascinating minds of the century ... From here you may stroll on down to Art Street Gallery ... Cosmic Art ... where you will find a continuous display of illustrious illustrations of fantasy at it’s utmost degree. Remember the spectacular mural whose colorful panoramas adorned the walls of the Aquarius Theatre during the Los Angeles run of “HAIR”, or the walls and interior of The Beatles’ “APPLE” Cultural Center in London? These remarkable examples of art history were created by Marijke,

the multi-talented artist from Amsterdam where she started her career as a commercial artist for advertising agencies. Marijke’s unique talents find expression in a diverse use of media, including oil paintings, watercolors and fashion designs. Her distinctive work has had an easily discernable influence on other contemporary artists and designers, and has attracted the patronage of many international celebrities. As the lead artist of the group “the Fool” during the 60’s in London, her innovative endeavors for The Beatles’ cultural center “Apple” included mural designs, editions of fine art reproductions and a commercial fashion line. She painted a piano for John Lennon and a mural at the home of George Harrison, designed costumes for the Beatles’ “All you need is Love” TV show and “The Magical Mystery Tour” film. She designed sets and costumes

COLICCHIO’S CORNER Victor Colicchio

N O I D n o ’ WAITIN

For those of you who know me, and those of you don’t. I apologize in advance for tooting my own horn. I wrote SUMMER of SAM for SPIKE LEE. Now that this is out of the way I want to (briefly) mention my new screenplay WAITIN’ on DION. Why am I mentioning this? Let me start from the beginning.

I was only 8 years old when I first heard Dion sing. There was a familiar ring to his voice, a Bronx accent. His voice was cool, and the beat was pure rock. I wanted a Dion Cd for my 8th birthday. I wanted to listen to the voice that the VILLAGE VOICE dubbed the coolest voice east of Memphis( a reference to Elvis), Dion’s voice was not only cool it had swagger. I wanted to be Dion. I listened to his music over, and over again. I sang his song for friends and relatives, and occasionally in a bar when I was with family. I was only 8 years old and I knew all of the lyrics to his songs, and yet I was failing in school because I couldn’t remember anything at all. Dion defines cool and John Lennon knew it. John copied Dion’s hat, glasses, and motorcycle jacket

rocker look. Dion and Bob Dylan are the only two musicians featured on the Sargent Pepper album cover. Lennon was also a fan.

I gave a girl her first kiss because of Dion. I had asked her to accompany me to Belmont Avenue to find Dion. I was 10 years old at the time and did not realize that Dion had left the “Hood” a long time ago. My family was from the same neighborhood as Dion. I remember hearing a story that the cool cat singer was expected to make a visit to see his aunt who actually lived in my building.. My screenplay is based on that visit.

Needless to say I am a fan. I always wanted to meet him. Dion had recently completed a new album with Paul Simon and was booked into The Tropicana in Atlantic City. I was the first to get a ticket. I was determined to meet him. I used my Bronx Savvy and talked the Hotel clerk into revealing his room number. My savvy and a few bucks did the tricks. I immediately went to his room, and knocked, and waited, and knocked, and waited, and knocked, and waited. Dion was not scheduled to arrive until the next day. It looked as though I would never get to meet my childhood hero. Then it came to me in flash. I would dress like Dion and sneak in. I it worked. I not only got into the theatre, but my “Dion” disguise got me back stage, and face to face with the man himself. Only kidding, I just flashed my Steel Notes press card and gained access to the show and backstage.

I had a winning streak that glued me to the casino’s gambling tables, and slot machines. I check the time and it was al-

Holly in 1958 and was scheduled to get on the plane crashed and took the lives of Buddy Holly, Richie Valenez, and The Big Bopper. I mourn them, but I am grateful that Dion missed the flight.. If not, I would have been Waitin’ On Dion for as long as I lived.

Dion first achieved Rock N Roll stardom with the vocal group Dion & The Belmonts.

Dion and the Belmonts were a leading American vocal group of the late 1950s. All members were from the Bronx, New York City. The group formed when Dion DiMucci, lead singer joined The Belmonts – Carlo Mastrangelo, bass-baritone , Fred Milano, second tenor and Angelo D’Aleo, first tenor in late 1957.

most show time. I rushed to the theatre and arrived 2 minutes before Showtime. The theatre was sold out, and standing room only accommodated a few dozen extra fans. The show was more than I expected. Dion sang his old hits which included, The Wanderer, Run around Sue, Teenager in love, and Abraham Martin & John. Dion included a few tunes from his Paul Simon collaboration. These songs not only reflect Dion’s coolness, but they clearly display his artistic talents.

Dion displayed his growth as an artist, but he also flaunted his talents as a Blues artist by performing songs from his Grammy nominated CD Bronx Blues. He also proved himself as a real rocker by singing the songs, of Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, and other greats from the 1950’s. Dion toured with Buddy

Remembering Tommy Doyle Whenever a celebrity dies, facebook gets bombarded with posts of R.I.P and other messages of sorrow over the loss of their beloved famous dead ones.. But we never knew these deceased celebrities. When you think of it, they never really die. John Lennon is as alive to me now as he was before his untimely and senseless death. Elvis, George Harrison, Marlon Brando, and all of my dead heroes still live in my life. I spend a lot of time with them. I watch their movies, and listen to their music daily. Their individual talents will always appeal to me. After all it is their talent that define them. I would now like to bring to your attention another gifted and talented musician, Tommy Doyle. Tommy , although not a “celebrated Superstar” Mr. Doyle was not only a gifted and accomplished musician, but was also a good guy, and a great friend. Tommy first gained recognition as a bass player in David Peel’s band THE LOWER EAST SIDE which led to recordings, and an appearance with John & Yoko on the David Frost show. Tommy soon became a member of the PLASTIC ONO BAND at Lennon’s bequest. Google Tommy Doyle and see for yourself . Tommy’s unique look, and musicianship landed him a role in the Milos Forman’s directed film. “HAIR” The only solace I can cling to at this point, is that Tommy died happy, and peacefully in the arms of his wife of 12 years, singer Desi Coltrane. Tommy may not have been an international superstar, but he was clearly. a New York Rocker and a great talent We will all miss him dearly.

Say Hi to Lennon for me. Tommy.

This latest compilation includes international musicians whose music has been featured on the Bongo Boy Rock N’ Roll TV Show series which airs on TV channels throughout the USA. steelnotesmagazine.com

The album starts off with Loire, France’s Lilith and her contribution “Love and Pain”. An EDM song with a strong beat, dramatic vocals and a poppy, bass driven dance groove, it’s an energetic choice to begin this collection. American artist Chickie Pagano continues to keep the dance beat moving with her EDM club composition “Prisoner Of Love”. Next, NYC’s ARRA feat. Psycho add some edge to the dance party with their song “Talk To Me”. With its layered music and vocals, this is one that will not only get the club moving on the dance floor, the mixing sounds multi-dimensional on headphones as well. Jamaica’s Da Professor brings the first of his two tracks included on this compilation with “I Love Myself”. A pop reggae song featuring a melody with groove and powerful positive lyrics, this track keeps the energy flowing and the dance vibe going. The fifth song is the first of two tracks from French recording artist Yona Pax. “Je N’ai Plus Peur” is a lush, romantic pop song that, although sung in her native French, uses her strong vocals and rich instrumentation that carry the song’s emotion across in any language. From the United States, George Aleman gives us the first of his two songs included here with “Back To You”. A radio-friendly modern rock song with lyrics detailing lost feelings in a relationship and a desire to get back what once was, this track also features some vivid guitar throughout. The seventh song on the album is from USA’s Barley Station. “I’ve Got News” mixes Americana infused rock with a catchy melody and rough around the edges vocals that make for a great first impression from this band. Next, George Aleman returns with his second track on the album, “I Will Follow You”. The gentle acoustic guitar strum that begins this song builds into a mid-tempo alt-country number with a chorus full of emotional longing. Track nine brings Yona Pax’s second appearance on the album with her song “Another World”. Using electronics to create a dramatic and otherworldly soundscape and featuring lyrics sung in both French and English, this is a song that offers more than the usual pop currently heard on mainstream radio. The second track included from Da Professor, “Anything Is Possible”,

is also the last track on this compilation. Continuing his musical blend of reggae and pop mixed with lyrics that have a strong, positive message about not giving up in spite of struggle and adversity as well as encouragement to keep fighting for your success, this is a powerful new single from Da Professor and the perfect song to close out this compilation.

Bongo Boy Records Compilations Volume Seven proudly continues the tradition of the first six volumes by gathering a diverse selection of independent musical artists from all over the world and compiling their songs to create a unique and interesting music sampler. Not only does this album give listeners an idea of the wide variety of independent music that Bongo Boy Records has to offer, it’s also an ideal way to be introduced to these up and coming artists.

Album Review Death By Unga Bunga “Tell Me Why” EP By: Dana Saravia— Life-long rock & roller, current music critic and Girl From Baltimore

Judging by the cover art of Death By Unga Bunga’s “Tell Me Why” EP alone, you might guess this band is cheeky with attitude and an appreciation for the past. And you’d be absolutely right. What the cover alone can’t tell you is that the EP contains some of the catchiest and most fun music of the year.

Way”, an energetic blast of garage rock full of fun and handclaps, it’s impossible not to move to this tune. The fifth song, “I Wanna Go Wild”, is a post breakup song featuring some excellent surf guitar and vocals that get more shredded and match the increasingly ragged emotions of the singer as the song continues. The EP ends with “Don’t Go Looking For My Heart”. A frantic, fast-paced rocker, this song mixes raw punk sound in attitude and lyrics with a great Beatlesque vocal part mid song and some truly killer organ throughout. A fiery, fierce song and an incredible closing track.

No way could I adore “Tell Me Why” any more than I do. The 17 minute running time may be short, but it leaves a large, bold impression. There are far more smarts, fun, attitude and originality contained in this EP than in 2 full length LPs from many other bands. Though I was a fan of Death By Unga Bunga before, I’m flat out crazy about them now. A stellar EP from a fantastic band. ****Available on CD and digital download at Amazon.com****

The title track is beyond amazing. Instantly memorable crunchy rock, the chorus’ lyrics “You better get down/Off your high horse/Because you have never been/Taller than yourself/Or someone else/ We’re just the same” are paired with a melody that sticks like glue. In a perfect world, this would be a HUGE hit already--it’s definitely a modern day classic. The next song is “Make Up Your Mind”. From the mid-60s sounding guitar and the lyrics “All your life you’ve been looking for something new/ Is it love or simply just a new pair of shoes” at the start, this track continues into an example mod pop at its finest. The third song “Stare At The Sun” is a swinging piece of psychedelic power pop. With a great bass groove & solid drums and bright melodic guitar, this song highlights the band’s fabulous musicianship. Next is “Lesson Learned The Hard

EP Review The Woggles “Souled Out” By Dana Saravia – Life-long rock & roller, current music critic and Girl From Baltimore

The Woggles always make an extremely catchy, superbly danceable blend of music and fun, both live & on record. Their latest EP, “Souled Out”, continues their winning streak with a blast of pure fun and wild energy.

Starting with a live wire cover of Chubby Checker’s “Karate Monkey”, The Woggles bring their signature style to this track, add a faster pace and crank the volume up to 11 to get this dance party started. Next up is a faithful, fun cover of the Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose classic “Treat Her Like A Lady”. The rhythm section is on point here and the groove really sizzles. The third song, a cover of the 100 Proof (Aged In Soul) single “Somebody’s Been Sleeping”, is a fantastic showcase for The Woggles. Manfred Jones’ vocals are a highlight-his soulful, heartfelt wail gives the song an emotional punch while Buzz Hagstrom’s bass playing adds spirited vibe. The energy, style & raw emotion present on this track make this one of the very rare times that, for me, the cover surpasses the original.

Side two starts out with “I Can’t Please You”. Mixing the classic soul of Jimmy Robins’ song with their own crunchy rock style and the gorgeous bluesy elements of Jeff Walls’ guitar, The Woggles

create a potent number that stands out and stays with you. “True Kings of Rock & Soul (Souled Out)” is the lone original of the EP and it’s stellar. With a monster beat coupled with an immediate and irresistible groove, it’s a musical shot of caffeine that will get anyone up and dancing. The sixth song is a cover of Eddie Floyd’s “Big Bird”. From the guitar playing that begins this faithful cover to the emotional build throughout the song, The Woggles do this classic justice and chose a great song to close out this EP.

record once again. The six tracks on this EP feature the band and their unique style and energy & is a great way to hold over avid fans until the next time they tour. Live and on record, The Woggles make a good time great and this EP is not only another excellent addition to their catalogue, it’s an excellent addition to any record collection as well.

Film Review ‘Birdman’ is motionless, inert nonsense By Jerry Saravia, Pseudo Film Critic Alejandro Inarritu, an overpraised director who was ridiculously bellied up with raves for the limp “Gravity,” has concocted another limp film, a vanity project where the director can show off his technical prowess. Only his endless long takes burden and suffocate the viewer with portentous characters of little draw or joy, save for the stellar work of Michael Keaton and Emma Stone.

136 | Steel Notes Magazine

“Birdman” is virtually long-take porn and a sad sack character study that is more artificial than all of its magical realism gimmicks. St. James Theatre on Broadway is the setting. Riggan Thomson (Keaton) is the mediocre actor and mediocre star of a movie franchise that made a box-office killing, Birdman. After “Birdman 2,” Riggan flew far away from it all and decided he wanted to be taken seriously. Thanks to sage advice from the late author Raymond Carver during Thomson’s early days in theatre, he decides to direct, write and act in his own adaptation of Carver’s “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” which strikes me as an insufferable bore of a play from a writer I do admire, Carver that is (check out the short stories and the sparkling diamond of a film made from it, “Short Cuts”). Riggan’s daughter (Emma Stone) is his indifferent assistant who hates picking out flowers for him and seems to hate him, period. The best scene in the film is the most shockingly honest as Riggan’s daughter lays down the truth about his stature as an actor and for having adapted a play that only rich people adore. Such blazing honesty is missing from the rest of

Inarritu’s Odyssey of Long Takes. I do admire uninterrupted long takes because, for cinematic purposes, they have a sweeping effect of lifting you from your seats and since the film delves into magical realist elements such as Riggan’s imagining himself as a flying bird, and sometimes not imagining himself at all, the technical visual strategy is apropos. But it is at a cost to the dramatic conflicts of its characters because what takes place in front of the camera is often inert. “Birdman” has no real pulse, no blood in it, no passion. It assumes the theatre world is full of arrogant dim bulbs (not unlike Edward Norton’s own sendup of himself in the guise of a far too technical actor) and I wanted to get away from them as quickly as possible. Even the New York Times theatre critic (Frank Rich would’ve

conked this woman out in real life) is snobbish and can’t be bothered with watching the play before reviewing it - she hates everything Riggan stands for. Michael Keaton is a solid actor but he often mumbles his way through the proceedings. I never felt connected to him -- Bill Murray would’ve been a wiser choice to play such a dull actor. That is not take away from several choice scenes Keaton has to play but he often works best when he is restrained (Check out 1988’s “Clean and Sober” for proof). Although I do admire the in-jokes and the atmosphere, “Birdman” is bird food for the avante-garde set -- the poseurs.

Television Series Review Supergirl flies high in first three episodes By Jerry Saravia, Pseudo Film Critic When news was first announced that there would be a “Supergirl” TV series, I was more than glad to hear it -- I was excited. After all, I have always liked Superman’s cousin and always felt that the campy Helen Slater flick from 1984 was a little underrated. Then my heart sank when the costume was revealed as having desaturated colors, not unlike Henry Cavill’s costume from 2013’s “Man of Steel.” The actress chosen, a certain Melissa Benoist, didn’t seem to strike me as a real presence, even for television. Fall of 2015 premiered the show

and the surprise is that it is a nifty, lightweight and remarkably upbeat show with a beaming Melissa Benoist as our Girl of Steel.

Steel Notes Magazine | 137

Benoist plays Kara Zor-El, a young Kryptonian girl who is sent off in a ship by her parents before the planet blows up. Kara is sent to protect baby Kal-El but unfortunately her ship ends up in some time warp in the Phantom Zone (about 24 years to be exact). After living on Earth with her new adoptive parents, the Danvers (Dean Cain and Helen Slater appear in cameos), and learning that Kal-El has done just fine on his own and became Superman, Kara is off to the fictional National City where she works as an assistant to the arrogant, “Devil Wears Prada”-type Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), founder of CatCo which is a media conglomerate. In the pilot episode, Kara flies into action for the first time and saves a plane from crashing which just happens to have her adoptive sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), on board. This makes major news and Cat Grant wants to interview the new heroine. Alex is none too happy because now the world is aware of a new superhero who can save the city from any evil threats, not to mention being protective of Kara. By the way, Alex works for DEO, Department of ExtraNormal Operations, and they all have got their eye on Supergirl. That is a new wrinkle in the Supergirl canon, a sort of NSA watchdog that keeps track of all supervillains. After seeing the first three episodes, you can expect to see Supergirl consistently flying, fighting supervillains with her bare hands and utilizing her heat vision (her eyes turn a blinding white, not unlike

138 | Steel Notes Magazine

Henry Cavill’s Superman) to help defeat some of the nastier heavies. What you won’t see is grit and hardly any ultraviolence, a welcome shift from most of its darker counterparts on television (I am looking at you, you gritty “Gotham”). This Supergirl may wear a costume drained of primary colors but she is actually fun to watch! Her Kara character, bespectacled at the CatCo offices she works at to protect her identity (though Jimmy Olsen knows who she is), is not shown as some dim, klutzy blonde assistant -- she has some smarts and questions her boss’s decisions, like naming the new hero Supergirl. Kara prefers Superwoman - a moot point since you know Kara has to work to maintain a living pretending to be human, like any superhero. She is not unlike Clark Kent, hiding her superpowers to hold a job where she has to keep the coffee hot for her boss. What keeps this lively show afloat thus far is Melissa Benoist and her winsome personality. Later episodes can only get sharper in terms of characterization, especially with Kara’s sympathetic sister, Alex, and Kara’s flirtations with Jimmy Olsen who has an ex by the name of Lucy Lane! There is also the enigmatic CIA agent and head of the DEO, Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), who is not quite human. Most refreshing, also hinted at in the “Man of Steel” flick, is Kara’s struggle to fly with grace and to capably fight her foes…and to keep that coffee hot.

Music Review Secret Lie “Wild Beautiful Rose” By: Dana Saravia—Life-long rock & roller, current music critic and Girl From Baltimore Secret Lie, a newer band who add classical elements to their sound, have released their debut album “Wild Beautiful Rose” on Bongo Boy Records Asia. Based in Portugal, Secret Lie’s blend of operatic vocals, strings, rock and pop infused with goth elements throughout, this album gives the band a solid introduction for listeners worldwide.

“Love Me Until The End Of Time” uses intimate vocals and strings to create a dramatic emotional atmosphere. With a moody vocal melody that blends into the instruments, this song makes an impact as an opening album cut. The second track, “I Can Be Free”, is an upbeat number that shows the band’s poppier side. Lyrics like “Look inside myself/And try to find a way/…Let me find a bridge to the dream” and the chorus’ “I just want to fly/ Diving from the sky/Running through the fields” work with the bright, soaring music to create a stand-out song, well-chosen as the first single off the album. “Beautiful Wild Rose”, their latest single, follows. A vivid ballad, Sara Madeira’s voice flows over the music and carries the melody along like the river described in the lyrics. The delicate piano that begins “Black Butterflies” sounds like the title beings in flight. Emotionally naked with lyrics such as “Sometimes you win/Sometimes you learn” that sound as though they’re being read aloud from

tear-stained diary entries. Paired with beautiful piano playing, it’s a song that evokes the feelings and thoughts that someone going through deep emotional ache and heartbreak would wrestle with late at night. Reminiscent of Tori Amos circa “Under The Pink”, this song spotlights the band’s dramatic presence and provides another example of their versatility in both style and tone. “Filling Spaces” immediately follows. Perfectly sequenced, lyrics like “This was the sound/Of my heart for you/Now there’s a silence that/Can break the world in two” sound as though the singer is emotionally evolving into acceptance from the feelings of heartbreak and desertion expressed in the previous song. Building on the theme of the previous two songs, “Until Death Do Us Part” is an operatic rock number that celebrates the best memories of a lost love to find strength in the present and hope for the future. Whether or not it was the band’s intention, tracks 4, 5 and 6 can be heard as a trilogy and help carve out a strong impression for the group. Male vocals take the lead for the first verse of the next song, “Blackout”, followed by Sara once again taking lead for the second verse which leads into a hard rock, duel vocal chorus. Sounding something like a lost Evanescence hit, this is a stand out song with classic rock elements that make it both epic and accessible. “Little Taste Of Fun”, with its lyrics “I feel so alive/ It’s gonna be a full and perfect day”, is an upbeat number that celebrates being alive in the beauty of nature and fully present in the moment. The ninth track here, “Take Me” describes the conflicting tangle of feelings of falling in love. As the lyrics cover the fear and joy, highs and lows that come along with deeper feelings for another person, the melody of the music gives the song a hopeful undercurrent. “Summer (Presto)” is the final song of the album. A soaring instrumental, it manages to perfectly capture the vibrant energy of the season and is the perfect album closer.

Secret Lie’s “Beautiful Wild Rose” is an excellent debut album. Each track brings something to highlight the many facets and influences of this band. The album as a whole showcases their versatility and ability to create moods and express feelings in a variety of styles while always remaining true to themselves and their sound. “Beautiful Wild Rose”
