HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT TEE HEIGHT FOR YOUR DRIVER

Every golfer wants to know how they can hit their driver farther. Sometimes the answer can be very simple and is as easy as changing your setup on the teebox. In this article we will talk about driver tee height, and how you can find the right one for your particular swing. Getting the right driver tee height can potentially add serious distance to your drives. It sounds like a gimmick, but it’s not. Many golfers go to extremes with their tee height, and either go too low or too high. One thing we want to make clear is that there is no “right” tee height for all players. We’re going to explain to you a little bit about your driver head, and how where you make impact on the face will affect your distance. Then we will show you a brief little test you can perform at the driver range to help with this. Your Driver Has Different Lofts Most golfers don’t know this, but your driver head has a bunch of different lofts on it. The number stamped on the head represents the loft somewhere in the middle of the face. The loft decreases as you go lower on the face of the driver, and increases as you move towards the top. For example, your driver might be 10 degrees somewhere around the middle – but the bottom of the club might have a loft of 7.5 degrees versus as high as 13-14 degrees on the top. Why does this matter? There is a concept known as gear effect, which makes your impact point on the driver face very important. Without getting too scientific this is what occurs with vertical gear effect: If you strike the ball lower on the face of the driver, it will increase your spin rate and decrease your loft. This is an absolute distance killer because it will result in lower, spinning drives that will not go as far. If you strike the ball higher on the face, it will increase your loft but decrease the amount of spin on the ball. Launching it higher with less spin is the key to hitting it farther for many players, but you don’t want to go to extremes and hit it too high on the face of the driver either. Typically just above the sweet spot is where you are going to get the optimal launch conditions, and you can get those towering drives that seem to travel farther. How to Find the Right Driver Tee Height Your golf swing has a major affect on where you will strike the ball on the face of the driver, but for the purposes of this articleweI want to talk about how a change in your setup can help accommodate the current swing you have. Doing some experimentation with your driver tee height can help solve this problem for you, and it’s quite simple. Get yourself a few cans of Dr. Scholls Odor X spray and spray the face of your driver before you take a few swings. You’ll quickly see where you are making contact on the face (this is a drill you should always do in your practice sessions anyway). Start to experiment with different tee heights and see what happens. Go low, medium, and then extremely high. You’ll begin to notice if you are striking the ball lower or higher on the face. You are looking for a general pattern; it won’t be exactly the same every time. We’ve done this test several times with our own swings, and figured out that teeing it too high will result in a strike a bit too high on the face, which you can see in this image:

If we go a bit lower then weI find we are able to get that spot just above the center of the face that will give you a little extra loft and decreased spin – this is the ultimate goal:

You are essentially trying to remove the extremes. Your golf swing is never going to repeat perfectly, but if you can determine that a certain tee height will help you avoid hitting it way too high or too low on the face, then you will most likely see more consistent results on the course.

Once you have found the height that works for you, buy some of these plastic tees and mark exactly where 10 is so you can easily reproduce it on the course without much effort. that

THE MOST IMPORTANT STRATEGY FOR LOWERING SCORES Hitting a green in regulation (GIR) is defined as the following – if any part of your ball is touching the putting surface and the number of strokes taken is at least two fewer than par. This simple definition does not do it justice though. I believe this is the most important statistic for golfers to measure themselves by if they want to shoot their lowest scores. Stats have become extremely important in the golf world. I believe that they have a place in the recreational golfer’s game-improvement plans because they allow you to set measurable goals. Why Are Greens in Regulation so Important? There has been a lot of advanced analysis on golf statistics over the last few years. Two great books that we would recommend to learn more are Lowest Score Wins and Every Shot Counts. While the books are not exactly the same, some of the key takeaways are similar. If you are a golfer who wants to improve, you have to increase your green in regulation number. The process of getting there is a bit more complicated, but it is the truth. The reason for this is because your chances of making a par (or better) dramatically increase when your ball is on the putting surface versus being in the rough or a sand trap. Make no mistake though, hitting more greens in regulation is a bigger challenge than improving your short game in my most humble of opinions. Here are a a few ways that we think you can make it happen,. Tee Shots – Setting Yourself up for a GIR Your performance off the tee on a par 4 or par 5 is crucially important to increasing your GIR. Hitting tee shots that put you in position to score is your main goal. It is mainly a function of your distance and dispersion. Generally speaking, the farther you hit the ball off the tee, the greater your chances of hitting a green in regulation. However, you have to avoid major hazards such as out of bounds, trees, water, and fairway bunkers. Additionally, the conditions of the rough at your course could make it even harder if you miss the fairway. This is where strategy and discipline come in. A smart course manager will take into account all of these variables, and select the club that gives them the best chance of hitting it far enough while keeping it in play. Each hole is designed differently, and it is best to think of your strategy beforehand, using a method like this. Overall, it will be very hard to hit more greens in regulation per round if you shoot yourself in the foot. You have to do your best to evaluate the major trouble and avoid it with smarter target and club selection. Stepping up to the tee without a plan is not going to help you. Page 12

Approach Shot Strategy Now let’s get to the most important part of strategy. We strongly believe that having the right strategy on your approach shots can help you hit more GIR. Golfers are needlessly aggressive with their club selection and targets, and it costs them strokes over time. Our first piece of advice is to stop aiming at pins. There is not one good reason amateur golfers should be firing at pins by default. The payoff they believe exists is truly not there because putting is much more difficult than we think. Instead, you should be evaluating the area surrounding the green and its actual shape. Golf course architecture comes in all kinds of flavors. It is very common for course designers to try and trick you into making a mistake. For example, if a part of the green is guarded heavily by bunkers, and the pin is tucked closely to that position, it is best to aim away from the trouble.

Here is a generic piece of advice we would give everyone. If you simply aimed to the center of every green, and played for that yardage (or even to the back sometimes), we think you will see an improvement in your green in regulation statistic. It seems boring, and extremely basic, but having the discipline to carry out that strategy works. Stop being aggressive! Ball Striking and Fixing Your Swing Now here is the most difficult part. To give yourself the best chance of hitting greens in regulation you need to improve your ball striking. To me this means tightening your dispersion (how far right or left you typically hit the ball), and distance control. Each golfer has their own unique challenges at improving their swing. We believe there are certain steps you can take in your practice sessions in order to do that. You could work with some training aids. You could take lessons. You could join a golf program (online or in person). They have tons of skill-based drills that you can perform at home or on the range. Your swing is arguably the most important piece of the puzzle. You could be the greatest course manager there is, but if you can’t get the ball heading towards the vicinity of where you are aimed, then you are going to struggle with hitting a green in regulation. What is Your Green in Regulation Plan? Every golfer’s game is unique. There isn’t a foolproof plan you can follow in order for you to increase your GIR number. Additionally, it might not make sense to pursue this stat because you are short on time. Perhaps focusing on limiting your three putting, and improving your scrambling percentage would make more sense. That being said, focusing on hitting more greens in regulation is arguably the most important strategy to pursue if you want to reach your highest level of golf. But you need a plan. Start analyzing your game, and use some of the ideas from here to give yourself a better chance of racking up more GIR during your next round.

HOW TO PLAY FAIRWAY BUNKER SHOTS PROPERLY To be proficient with fairway bunker shots you have to consider your club selection carefully, and fully commit to where you want to strike the ball on the clubface. Here is some information sure to help you hit better fairway bunker shots. Club Selection for Fairway Bunker Shots The biggest factor in club selection is how high you have to hit the ball to get it over grass mounds or lips that surround the bunker. Getting too greedy can easily lead to undesirable outcomes. The question you want to ask yourself is, “What is the least lofted club I know I can hit high enough to get over these obstacles?” If there’s any hesitation in your answer to that question, you haven’t chosen enough loft. Make sure that beyond a shadow of a doubt, if you make decent contact with the ball, it’s soaring out of the bunker and back into a good position to minimize damage to your score. Technique It may be hard to believe, but we assure you fairway bunker shots can become easy with a little practice and appropriate in-swing intentions. There’s nothing fancy about the technique of the fairway bunker swing. It’s a full swing. Don’t let it be anything more complicated than that. Most average golfers struggle with balance in their swing, especially when faced with shots that make them uncomfortable. I recommend digging in with your feet while getting set in your address position to avoid the sand breaking free beneath your feet during your swing. The key to the fairway bunker shot swing is your in-swing intention, also referred to as your swing thought. Your in-swing intention should be to hit the ball without touching one single grain of sand. If you chose the correct club, catching it a little thin will still yield a very nice result. Being this precise with your contact takes a bit of practice, so keep reading so you know how to develop this valuable skill. Practice How in the world am I supposed to practice fairway bunker shots? Driving ranges don’t have fairway bunkers! Well they don’t need to. All you need is a grass range and some sand or divot filler. Ask the proshop if you can borrow a bottle of their divot fill, and if they don’t have any, buy a cup of coffee, dispose of coffee as you see fit, and go to the nearest bunker and fill the coffee cup full of sand. Now head to the range and warm up. Find the biggest divot near you after your warm up and fill it full of sand. Gently place a ball in the sand-filled divot and swing with the intention of striking the ball thin. As you hit balls with different clubs out of your homemade mini fairway bunker, experiment with choking down on the grip and see if it helps you achieve that thin strike. When you start feeling successful graduate to trying to pick it clean without touching the sand. When executed correctly the ball should fly a little higher. On Course Expectations I’ve found that when I strike an iron solid from a fairway bunker it goes the same distance as when I strike it off the fairway. The biggest difference is the way it feels and sounds. You don’t get that same lovely sound from a fairway bunker as you do from the fairway, so don’t expect it. As long as you can get the club on the ball and get the ball to clear any obstacles, you should be well on your way to fairway bunker proficiency and you’ll be the envy of the other members of your foursome.

IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS 1. KNOW YOUR YARDAGE Before you take your shot it's critical to know your yardage. You'll need to ask yourself: How far am I to the flag? Will the club I'm using produce a shot that's too far or too short? Is there water or a bunker on the green? Is there a false front* or a hazard short I need to look out for? Keep in mind that aiming at the flag is not always the best play. A pin location may not be in the center of the green. In this case, aiming at the center of the green is the best option. *A false front is an area of the putting green that is part of the green. Angled or sloped, the false front repels or cause balls to run off its surface. 2. VISUALIZE YOUR SHOT Visualizing your shot is critical. Think about how high or low you need to hit to hold the green. Also, take into account any elevation change. You must picture your shot in your mind's eye before you hit the ball. 3. SELECT THE APPROPRIATE CLUB This seems like a no brainer but there are several factors to take into account. What kind of lie do I have? Is the ground level or uneven? Is the ball in the fairway or in the rough? To get the best results you need to play within yourself. Know your limitations. Don't hit a 3 wood off of the fairway if you're having a bad day or if you don't play often. 4. TAKE A PRACTICE SWING Practice swinging before you actually hit the ball. This will warm you up and give you a feel for what you're about to do. 5. COMMIT TO THE SHOT. Take a deep breath, grip it, and rip it! Any uncertainty will cause an uncertain ball flight.

BECOMING A BETTER PUTTER - 4 TIPS TO HOLE IT Please sign your name on a piece of paper. See how quick and easy that was? Now try to slowly duplicate that signature. Not so easy. The reason is, you're thinking about it and not tapping into your subconscious, the way you did when you signed the first time. Putting is no different. The best putters see their target line and then roll the ball on that line, just like you saw the paper and then signed it. The lesson is, keep it natural, and don't let yourself get bogged down by anything. We will incorporate this and basic tips for improving your setup and stroke. This method might really differ from what you do now, but it's the most effective way to roll the ball into the hole. 1. LEAD WITH YOUR LEFT If you shot a free throw with your right hand only, you'd realize you need your left hand as a guide. The same is true on the greens: The left hand is the direction hand, and it's just as important as the right. Practice putting left-hand-only (right), or have someone hold a club in front of your hands on the target line. Bump the grip with the back of your hand, not your fingers. 2. THINK ROLL, NOT HIT The key to distance control is to roll the ball, not hit it. To do this, take an open stance, your weight slightly favoring your left side and your putter shaft leaning toward the target. The open stance makes it easier to feel the left hand going out and down the target line. The forward lean offsets the 4 degrees of loft we recommend for a putter and helps the ball roll smoothly. When you make the stroke, keep the putterhead low to the ground past impact. The putter will ascend slightly, but don't try to hit up on the ball -- whoever told you to do that was wrong, because it makes the ball hop. 3. USE YOUR FINGERS Grip the putter any way you like, as long as it doesn't hinder your left hand's role in the stroke. But make sure to grip the club in your fingers. The shaft should run up the lifeline of your left hand for clubface control, but your fingers must contact the grip. You can drop the right forefinger down the shaft, but don't steer with it. Forget about what your palms are doing. Fingers equal feel. 4. SPOT THE SPOT If you stare at the ball too long at address, it's easy to get brain-locked and hit a bad putt. To avoid this, don't even look at the ball. Try looking at a spot just in front of the ball on your target line and rolling the ball over that spot. Put a tee in the ground in front of the ball when you practice. This gets you thinking about the target line instead of the stroke--the opposite of what most golfers do. Another trick to free your mind is to picture the ball going in on the high side of the hole on a breaking putt. Most golfers miss low.
