Letter from the Director Welcome to Michigan’s Backyard, Gladwin County. On behalf of the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to Michigan’s Backyard, the Hometowns of Gladwin County. Gladwin County is a unique place to live, work, and grow a business. Whether you’re visiting for the day, looking for a new place to call home, or you’re already a resident of our thriving communities, Gladwin County consists of quaint little towns with big hearts and plenty of opportunities. Our rich history contributes to the nuances which creates the “Norman Rockwell” environment that is loved by so many. The Chamber was established in 1936 to advocate and support the prosperity of Gladwin County and area businesses. This is an exciting time to be a member of the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce as we create innovative networking opportunities and technologic advances to connect our businesses with each other We are always creating new networking and promotional opportunities to help our member businesses succeed and grow, including space to advertise on the Chamber website, business referrals, networking opportunities, legislative breakfast series and virtual networking.

We continue to partner with local government and other organizations to pursue improvements in the overall quality of life for the city, county, and region. The focus of importance in the areas of transportation, education, healthcare, tourism, economic development, community development, and workforce development. Angela is a lifelong resident of Gladwin. She graduated from Gladwin High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Alma College. Angela is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Gladwin, Gateway Community Band and is the Treasurer for the City of Gladwin. In her spare time, Angela loves to garden and travel.

Jessica Aman is a Gladwin High School graduate and earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Central Michigan University. She is the owner of Merrily Ever After Bridal Shop located on Main Street in Gladwin. Jessica also serves on the local Junior Achievement board and volunteers in the classroom with her young son, Philip.

Michael was born and raised in Gladwin County. He graduated from Beaverton High School and earned his Bachelor Degree from Alma College. Michael is a producer at Burkhart-Presidio Insurance, is involved in the GBPA, and spends his free time playing golf.

Dawn is the Broker/Owner of 989 Real Estate LLC and has been serving Gladwin County with their real estate needs for over 12 years. She is a lifelong resident of Gladwin County and is proud to make Gladwin her home with her husband and son.

Bob is a graduate of Gladwin High School and received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Central Michigan University. He worked in the banking industry for 18 years prior to joining Michigan Works! Region 7B and Gladwin County EDC in 2012. Bob enjoys camping with his family, hunting, fishing and the outdoors, and positively impacting the lives of youth.

Cory was born and raised in Gladwin, graduated from Mid Michigan College and later CMU, and taught in the Lansing area for six years before an opportunity arose to return to Gladwin. He is currently serving as Operations Manager at the Clare County Transit. Cory and his wife April are looking forward to becoming more invested and involved in the business community of Gladwin.

In his free time Sean enjoys being out on the water, traveling and watching sports.

There will be prizes, challenges, a delicious steak dinner and surprises for all of the participants. A great way to network with businesses and individuals, while enjoying a beautiful day on the expertly groomed Sugar Springs Golf Course.

The Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program is structured to help you meet new people, discover the many businesses in the area, build deeper connections through networking opportunities, and enhance your communication skills as you serve as a liaison between the Chamber and the community.

Chamber Ambassadors serve to welcome new businesses and individuals to the community, act as official Chamber representatives, and promote and enhance the reputation of the Chamber to the communities it serves.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE The Chamber Ambassador Program is governed by a Chair and Vice-Chair who are elected annually.

Individuals interested in becoming a Chamber Ambassador must be a current Chamber member or a representative of a current Chamber member business. Acceptance into the Chamber Ambassador Program is contingent upon an in-person casual interview with the Chamber’s Executive Director.

Serving as a Chamber Ambassador includes attending events that occur at various times. It is important that prior to making the commitment to serve as a Chamber Ambassador, you discuss the following expectations with your employer to ensure that you will be able to attend events and assist the Chamber with a reasonable schedule.

ENROLLMENT

If you are interested in serving as an Ambassador for the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce, please contact the office to request an application form. Once your application has been reviewed, you will complete an Ambassador Commitment form to be recognized as an official member of the Chamber’s Ambassador Committee. Countless significant plastics innovations began in our own backyard, thanks to the imagination and hard work of four local men – men who not only understood how to transform the plastics production process, but were CATALYSTS in their own right in birthing a new industry. Each with his own talents, these men took Depression-era resourcefulness and turned their curiosity into ideas which became innovations that remain the foundation of plastics industry processes today. Fred Robinson, Miles Kalahar, Gaylord Brown and Bill Oberloier fed on each other’s passion to build the industry. MidMichigan Medical Center - Gladwin MidMichigan Medical Center - Gladwin, located at 515 Quarter Street, is a 25 licensed-bed critical access hospital that has been serving the health care needs of residents throughout Gladwin County since 1937. Led by Ray Stover, president, MidMichigan Medical Centers in Gladwin and West Branch, the Medical Center is part of MidMichigan Health, a non-profit health system, headquartered in Midland, Michigan, affiliated with Michigan Medicine, the health care division of the University of Michigan. With more than 300 employees, volunteers, physicians and other personnel, the Medical Center in Gladwin provides patients with access to a full continuum of health care services normally found only in much larger communities. With 24-hour emergency care, the Medical Center’s specialized inpatient units include medical and surgical care, with support by the Medical Center’s hospitalist program. Outpatient services include mammography, bone density, X-ray services, diagnostic imaging, infusion services, nuclear medicine, laboratory services, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scanning and MRI, as well as a sleep disorders lab. The Medical Center campus features a waterfall in a garden-like setting reflective of MidMichigan’s emphasis on humanistic care. The waterfall, courtyard and walking trails that connect to the Gladwin City Park Riverwalk trails are enjoyed by Medical Center employees, patients and visitors. In addition, the cardiovascular team at MidMichigan Medical Center - Gladwin is well-equipped and trained to diagnose and treat heart disease, offering a wide variety of diagnostic cardiac studies, including Holter monitoring, stress tests, electrocardiograms (EKGs) and echocardiograms. A well-qualified and caring staff delivers a wide range of rehabilitation services that include physical therapy, with aquatic therapy offered in a heated pool, as well as speech therapy and occupational therapy.

The quality of care at MidMichigan Medical Center - Gladwin is independently verified through accreditation from The Joint Commission and was named one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States by The Chartis Center for Rural Health in 2019. The gym was humid and sticky as sweat beaded down my face. My dad and I sat next to each other, the crowded Beaverton Activity Center gymnasium completely silent--despite the fact that there were at least 300 people sitting within. Scott Govitz held the winning envelope in his hand. He opened the card and announced, “Miss Beaverton 2010 is…” My dad and I held our breath. “Morgan Oldani!” The whole gym erupted into cheers. I watched my cousin’s smile spread wide across her face as she accepted her crown. My very own cousin had just been crowned our town’s royalty. I was only seven years old when Morgan reigned, but it was in that moment--her crowning glory--that I knew I wanted to be on that very same stage. Of course, when you are seven years old, you think that a crown and a pretty dress is the only thing that makes a princess. But, as I grew up here in Beaverton, I began to realize that the title of Miss Beaverton means so much more than that. Since 1929, when Loraine Budge was crowned as the very first Miss Beaverton, the title has represented not only beauty, but intelligence, kindness, passion and drive. My childhood photographer, Gwen (McCulloch) Tweed was the first Miss Beaverton I was influenced by. Gwen’s confidence crowned her in 1994, and she has carried that with her throughout the rest of her life. From a very young age, she taught me how to pose for pictures, but more importantly she showed me how to carry myself--for a photo and for life. As an artist with her camera and a successful business woman along with it, I couldn’t have been more honored to share a title with her. When Morgan won in 2010, I was privy to see all of the behind-the-scenes action that makes a successful year of reign. Of course Morgan illustrated her confidence and kindness, but I also got to see that it’s not a job solely for the crowned. A good Miss Beaverton has an even

better entourage. From the Uncle chauffeurs who drive you through parades, to the grandmas who take the pictures, even the moms who run back to the house because you forgot your sash. Being Miss Beaverton would be impossible without Miss Beaverton’s family. The most impactful Miss Beaverton I have ever met, the person who urged me to take the courageous path in life, and the woman who showed me what being yourself really means was Kelli Fitzpatrick, Miss Beaverton 2005. Miss Fitz, as I called her, was my English and Yearbook teacher at Beaverton High School. Thinking back all the way to freshman year, Miss Fitz was single handedly the most encouraging and open-minded teacher. She was elated to see me go on foreign exchange to Croatia, and even more excited to help me with my career path when I returned. As an esteemed educator and published author herself, Kelli showed me how you can and should chase your dreams. She pushed me to seek them out and even helped me find ways to pursue them. Kelli Fitzpatrick showed me how to be me. As I stood on that very same stage as my cousin 10 years before I held my breath once again. “Miss Beaverton 2020 is…Sydney Compton!” Through all the rush of winning, I still kept in mind what this position really meant. I thought of Gwen, Morgan, and Kelli. The beautiful women who wore the crown so well. But I remembered what these women showed me: it’s not about how beautiful the head of the crown bearer is, it’s about what’s inside it. Through my experiences with my ‘royal family’, I’ve come to realize that the skills that make you a good Miss Beaverton are the skills that make you a great person. It’s not all about the shiny crown, pretty dresses or even the scholarship (although that’s a wonderful perk). Miss Beaverton is about exuding the confidence and kindness of a woman who is ready to take on the world. Miss Beaverton 2020, Sydney Compton

Recent laws have made it easy for parents and mentors to introduce the sport of hunting to their young boy or girl. Local newspapers are filled with the proud and smiling faces of children of all ages who have successfully harvested one of the many game animals found in our forests. As summer comes to an end and the colorful beauty of the trees as their leaves begin to show evidence that fall is near, the woods come alive with the sound of hounds pursuing their quarry. In early fall, the chatter of a weary squirrel in the sights of a patient hunter will surely excite the old and young alike. The classic look of a pointer dog locked on a partridge is proof of the many hours a hunter spends training his “best friend”. Beagles sense the coming snow and eagerly await the chase of cottontail and snowshoe rabbits. The action is steady and frequent success draws the hunter back to the woods weekend after weekend until spring magically appears before the sting of winter is noticed. Trappers are often seen along our hundreds of miles of streams and rivers or wading the shores of one of 79 lakes found in our county. Their skills are shared with youngsters seeking to learn about our heritage of fur harvesting. Beavers, mink, muskrats and other furbearing animals are found in good numbers along water sources on private land and in marshes, lakes and streams commonly found on the thousands of acres of public land in Gladwin.

The growing number of bears in the area is celebrated by wildlife lovers. Their solitary nature makes them relatively rare to see, but the evidence of their inhabitance is witnessed, on occasion, when their incredible noses lead them to the tasty morsels left by those feeding birds during the spring and summer. Hunters have found great success in harvesting trophy bruins here in Michigan’s Backyard.

Trees become “second homes” for many bowhunting enthusiasts beginning in October. The opener of the firearm deer season is a “national holiday” in Gladwin and is celebrated by the closing of schools on November 15th, allowing our young hunters the opportunity to enjoy their newfound passion. Deer numbers are plentiful and trophy bucks lure the dedicated hunter into the forests throughout the fall and until a new year is celebrated. The coldest days of the year won’t deter the hardy hunter from pursuing the many game animals commonly found in Gladwin County. Dog boxes full of eager hounds are commonly seen until the end of March. Bobcats, fox, and coyotes are crafty critters and encourage sportspeople and their dogs to give chase to them all winter long. Electronic calls have also become a common means to draw an unsuspecting animal into range.

Wild turkeys are seen in great numbers around the county. Often appearing somewhat domesticated, turkeys give the novice hunter a false sense of confidence that the hunt will quickly be successful. However, its keen eyesight and weary nature make the tom turkey a true challenge to hunt and a trophy to harvest during this spring hunt. Frequent success and the beauty of our community have drawn turkey hunters from across the state for decades.

4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION

HOLIDAY HUNT

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING

The celebration starts days before the 4th of July in Beaverton. The crowning of Miss Beaverton Pageant kicks it off. The children’s games at Ross Lake Park, is an annual activity that gives children the opportunity to experience old-fashioned carnival style games to win cherished prizes. The 4th of July Parade is one of the largest parades in Central Michigan. The finale of the celebration are the ever-exciting, booming and flaring fireworks display that residents and visitors come from miles around to ooo and ahh in delight.

When the hunters in your family take to the woods during the opening weekend of rifle season, you take to the streets of Beaverton to hunt your own game in November 2021. The Holiday Hunt is a community-wide event in Beaverton that offers raffles, discounts at local businesses, lunch specials and local craft shows. The fun continues with hayrides and door prizes for visiting businesses. The event is sponsored by the Beaverton Area Business Association to promote local businesses, shop local and save local.

The holidays are ushered in starting with a Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration the first Friday in December 2021 at Ross Lake Park, presented by Beaverton Area Business Association. This is a tradition for many families in our County and many kids line up to see Santa! The band will play carols, the townspeople will sing and the town will light up their trees for the season!

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS PARADE

Thunder on the Strip will take place in August 2021 and is one of Gladwin’s premiere events, pitting some amazing cars against one another to see who owns the strip. This family fun event is held at the Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport in May each year. Friday Test & Tune and Saturday Drag Racing! You have an opportunity to bring your car out on the strip and show off what it can do in an 1/8 of a mile!

The Jeep Creep will be held in October 2021. It is one of the highlighted events in Gladwin County and features music Friday and Saturday night at Riverwalk Place. In 2019 the Jeep Creep had almost 700 Jeeps from all over Michigan, the Midwest and Canada. The Jeepers have the opportunity to participate in the Challenge Course created by Rocks & Valleys located at Graff of Gladwin’s parking lot. The event is FREE for spectators and kid friendly.

The Festival of Lights Christmas Parade, and the Tree Lighting, takes place the first Saturday in December 2021 in Gladwin. The community comes together to fund this magnificent event that brings an estimated 5,000 people to the small town of Gladwin, Michigan. With large helium and cold air balloons, stretching over 50-feet tall and fireworks from the Gladwin City Park, it’s a wonderful site to see. Visitors have come from as far as Canada and Puerto Rico! Come join us and see what all the excitement is about!

The airport is the gateway airport to Northern Michigan recreation. Gladwin County has state and national forest land, lakes and rivers, ORV and snowmobile trails, and superb hunting and fishing spots. Your choice of new and recently remodeled motels, hotel and spa, antique shops and numerous restaurants are only one to two miles from the airport. Three courtesy cars are available 24/7 and you are welcome to keep them for overnight use. Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport is a major contributor to Gladwin County businesses and directly impacts a large percentage of the jobs in this county of 25,500 year-round residents.

Companies often use GDW as a base to visit their locations throughout a six-county area. There are also a few ultralight aircrafts based at GDW. For those who like turf, GDW has 15/33, a 2,580’ x 150’ runway. GDW has self-serve 100LL and Jet A fuel available 24/7, and assisted/full service during regular business hours seven days per week. GDW holds several popular fly-in breakfasts each year – in the airport pavilion – some feature WWII war birds, and rides are often available. Breakfasts often coincide with events at the Gladwin County Fairgrounds, which are located adjacent to the airport and are used throughout the year for festivities such as the antiques snowmobile races, and of course the county fair.
