THE EDITOR'S PEN Well, we have a new year, and we've officially passed the six month marker for the life of the society since it's start up in July. We've meet regularly and made many great friends along the way as well as gained a lot of insight as to the direction we're heading in. Back in November, Aimee Stewart, of Foxfire's Art, unveiled her donated talents that created the Steampunk Illumination Society Logo. With deep gratitude toward her, we proudly display our new logo that represents our society here in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Along with this new addition, we have recently started working towards getting classes started for folks interested, and it sounds as though we now have a possible location for these classes to start taking place at. Radha Fagan contacted me to let me know that during a trip to Googly Eyes in Irving off of West 182. They would charge $2 per person, but for being allowed to hold classes there, this is a very reasonable price. So if you are interested in teaching a class, please contact us at contact@steampunkis.org and let us know! As many know, we've got “the big event” coming upon us quite soon, and so very many of us in the society are just busy little bees, trying to make sure everything will go off beautifully for “A Clockwork Wonderland: Through Aether & Mysterium”. In December (2010), there was a shoot done to create a silent film promoting this event. Many of SIS's members were in this film, as well as several other talent and well dressed folks. After viewing the film, all that was left to say was “Bravo!”. It was quite well done, and entertaining to watch. Most of all, I have to say how very impressed and proud I am of each person that has come together as a team to make every effort to bring this mini-con event to a reality for all to enjoy. To each involved in some way, shape, or form – I say THANK YOU! This is exactly what this society is about, and you all very clearly define that for all to see through your efforts. Before I end this, I wanted to say a thank you to Ramon, who has been writing a great deal of articles, and has graciously allowed me to use a few of his musings. If you have something you'd like to contribute, please do contact me, and I would be more

MINUTES from Sept. 2010 to Jan. 2011 Over the last few month's we have met up quite regularly and discussed a variety of topics. Here is what has been going on... On September 22nd 2010, we met in Garland, Texas at 7:30pm and Captain Hopkins discussed the new Fencon for 2011. The guest of honor has been announced as being Gail Carringer for that convention and Guy Brownlee spoke more about this event, and also noted that volunteers would be well needed. So please consider giving of your time for the 2011 Fencon. Becky Demonja spoke, stating that she is interested in getting our take on things for Fencon at the next SIS meeting. During the meeting on 9/22/10, there was talk of the SIS website's new design/look and that eventually, we will be adding more content, as well as categories. There was discussion of the once planned Tarantula ride in Grapevine as well. But as fate would have it, come October, the ride had to be canceled because of mechanical problems with the steam train. It was quite disappointing, as the event drew near, so many were very excited about the potential ride. We hope, at a later time, we can attempt to do this train ride again, but Captain Hopkins has jokingly stated that it will happen after he engineers a part to fix the train. Here's remaining hopeful for that train ride in the future. Other things that happened during the 9/22/10 meeting also included conversations that had taken place between Toby Lawhon, Stephanie Moran, and Aimee Stewart of Foxfire's art about the SIS logo. Aimee had let both Toby and Stephanie know that the logo would be done shortly, possibly as early as November 2010. Guy Brownlee had also mentioned that there would be a show on PBS called “Sherlock” on October 24th 2010, and he'd like to try to get together a viewing party for this show, and was looking for someone who was interested in hosting that event. He had stated that it was “contemporary and amazing” . He had also mentioned that he was interested in starting up a regular event called “Kinetoscope” every Saturday afternoon., and he thought that having a movie party about once every four months might b e a nice get together for interested society members as well. The meeting was adjourned about 8:45pm, and raffle tickets were drawn with our winners being Ramon Fagan, who won a steampunk style lamp, and Professor Phineas, who won a prop piece called a “Time Turner” featured in the Harry Potter movie. Congrats to the both of them! Before folks had departed for the evening, there were quick announcements made mentioning ...(continued on page 2) Page 1

that on October 3rd 2010 there was an event taking place called Middlefaire which would be having a Pirate/Steampunk/Variety gathering for those interested. Scott Ward had spoken about that event. Captain had also announced that on October 10th 2010, SIS would be holding a swap meet after the meeting as well. On October 10th 2010's meeting, we held it partially at eXcuses eXtreme Cafe, but there was a miscommunication, and we had to move our meeting over to Mama Mia's Italian restaurant, which was next to the eXcuses eXtreme Cafe. We finished our meeting with a smaller crowd of folks. Among those in attendance were Faith Kore, Khate Anderson, Kathleen Huss, Ramon & Radha Fagan, Rob Scott, Guy Brownlee, Larry & Tina Amyett, Leila Cranford, Scott Ward, Captain Hopkins, Stephanie Moran, and some of our junior members: Autumn, Nathaniel, and Cannonball Joe. Albeit a small group, we actively discussed future meeting locations such as local recreational halls, libraries, the HalfPrice books location off of NW highway in Grapevine which Scott Ward suggested, as well as possibly once going to Middlefaire. No raffle was held for this meeting.

baked by Stephanie Moran (StaticNomad). We eventually cleared out of the venue around 10pm. Thanks goes out to Crystal's Spaghetti and Pizza not only for allowing us use of their meeting rooms, but also for being so accommodating and patient with our society for the times that we (often) run over, and past closing time. We are sincerely grateful to them.

Our meeting for November 06th 2010 was fairly large. This meeting was held, once more, at Crystal's Spaghetti and Pizza in Irving, Texas. We met at 3:30pm. Meeting was called to order at 4:47pm by Captain Hopkins and we welcomed Rolanda Patterson, Mandi Ainsworth and Leslie Lynch as well. We carried on with our normal meeting, covering much of what has been discussed during past meetings with new locations to meet at, our efforts to become established as nonprofit, and the current progress on the event now known as “A Clockwork Wonderland: Through Aether & Mysterium”. Toby Lawhon chatted a bit about this event, bringing us up-to-date on what would be taking place, who would be entertaining there, and so forth. The date for January 22nd2011 was confirmed as certain, as well as the venue being confirmed for being held at Curtain Club and Liquid Lounge in downtown Dallas, where Deep Ellum resides. Raffle was held, and st On October 21 2010, in Irving, Texas, we met at winners were awarded their prizes, to which then the local Crystal's Spaghetti and Pizza. Welcome to our new meeting was adjourned, and we departed after some members and visitors: Mike & Elizabeth Stewart, Jenny social time. Thanks goes out to Ramon and Radha Fagan Krabacher, and Kim & Greg Goodwin! The meeting was for providing a meeting spot afterwards for a handful called to order at 8pm, and we started by having Toby of folks that enjoy continuing social time, and a spot Lawhon speak about an event that Marquis of of tea at their residence. We sincerely appreciate your Vaudeville wanted to present called “A Clockwork generosity and hospitality! Wonderland”. It would be an Alice in Wonderland theme with a steampunk twist to it, and held at the Curtain For November 18th 2010, we met again at Club located in downtown Dallas. The event would have Crystal's Spaghetti and Pizza in Irving, Texas at a bazaar where dealers could bring their wares to sell, 7:30pm. We welcomed new members & visitors: BJ Stahl, as well as various circus style acts, and other Harley Greco, Jon-Michael Craven, St Evremonde entertainers present. “Bones Jangle” was mentioned as VonWare & her Airship crew, Capt Zelda, Christian one of the guests invited to do a performance of sea Richardson, Paul Johnson, and Tish & Tim Burt & shanties, and all airships would be cordially invited family. If we missed anyone, we still appreciate you as well. There was talk of possibly having a fashion taking the time to attend, and hope that you show, and gadget show as well at this event. The focus considering attending more meetings in the future. point would be possibly January, with a date of maybe Captain Hopkins called the meeting to order at 8:30pm, 1/22/11. Toby stated he was looking to confirm that and we covered old business from previous meetings to date soon. He had also said that this was to be a one allow members the chance to add any input on the night event with a possible $10 to $15 admission fee topics, as well as to bring our visitors and new members and for dealers, they would pay a $30 fee, but they up to speed. Discussions involved the event called “A would get to keep 100% of their profits. Toby also said Clockwork Wonderland” scheduled to take place on that Aimee Stewart would be guest of honor at this January 22nd 2011, and our status on becoming event. We thanked Toby for his announcement of this established as a non-profit organization. The event potentially exciting event, and moved on to other taking place in Galveston, Texas known as “Dickens on topics of discussion. Carnevale of Creatures was the Strand” was mentioned by Khate Anderson. She another event that was brought up by Ramon and explained that Airship Isabella had heavy impact on Radha Fagan. It is another one night event that would making this event very steampunk infused, and would take place on February 11th 2011, and it was told that be a wonderful event for SIS members to travel to. She it would be an adult only show because of some stated she would later share more details online at burlesque style entertainment. More information the SIS forum so that those interested could plan to would be available as this event developed it's plans. attend if they would like. She stated that Dickens on We held our raffle, and then the meeting was the Strand would be taking place on December 4th and adjourned about 9pm. Social time took place. We sang 5th. “Bones Jangle” was participating in would be taking place at “Bahama Beach Club” in Garland, Texas. The event is a CD release party for “The Bilge Pumps” and Bones Jangle's band that he plays for would be there to play their pirate sea shanties. His band's name is “Pride O' Bedlam” and they would be going on stage to play at 7pm. Those interested in attending and supporting him will be given more detailed information online at the SIS forum, but the event was scheduled to take place on December 11th 2010, starting at 6pm. Before the meeting was adjourned, Ramon Fagan mentioned the Ikkicon convention coming up at the end of December, and that they would be doing a panel at this event as well. More details would be posted online at the SIS forum. Captain Hopkins adjourned the meeting at 9:42pm, and members departed with some yummy peppermint cupcakes made for the society by Stephanie Moran, and social time continued over at Ramon & Radha Fagan's home for those that chose to tag along. Again, sincere thanks are sent to them for their kind hospitality! December 4th's 2010 meeting was canceled due to so many of our society members attending Dickens on the Strand. A few members met up at Bahama Beach Club for an unofficial meet and greet in support of Bones Jangle's musical event. It was a fun time had by all in attendance. Due to the holidays, there was no success in securing a facility to meet at, and so our next meeting was held on December 16th 2010. We met at Crystal's Spaghetti and Pizza in Irving, Texas at 7:30pm. We had a pretty big crowd in attendance, and a plenty to discuss. Yulecon was part of the talks, as Ramon and Radha Fagan would be putting on a comedy skit for that convention, which was hosted by James Leavings. After our meeting, they would be putting on a skit for us all to enjoy, and give feedback on. Considering the amount of time we had to conduct the meeting in, and have enough time for the skit, we moved pretty quickly through old business, and new alike. A brief silent auction took place, and the item being bid on was a steampunk hot air balloon wind chime/planter hand crafted by Stephanie Moran. Mike Stewart won that wind chime, and we thank him very much for his bid and donation to the society. The profits went directly to Steampunk Illumination Society's savings. It was mentioned that a donation button was now active on the SIS website, so that those interested could donate as they wished. Tina Amyett donated a beautiful corset for the raffle, and someone else (unknown – but gratefully we thank them, if they are reading this!) donated a very nice compass for raffle as well. Tish Burt was very intent on winning that corset, and so she did, and was quite happy with her gain! Congrats to her and thank you to Tina Amyett for her generous donation to the society. Very quickly, society members moved from the meeting room to the stage area where we all settled in for quite an entertaining comedy number put on by our very own Radha and Ramon Fagan of Kali's Hourglass. Cannonball Joe, Nathaniel Moran, and Autumn Moran also had parts in this skit. Everyone enjoyed the event and departed with more yummy

cupcakes made by Stephanie Moran for all the society to enjoy. We thank all who attended and donated to this event. Once again, some members ventured over to Ramon and Radha's residence, where they showed us great hospitality and kindness. We certainly appreciate them for this. Thank you ever so much! We did not meet again until January 8th 2011, and hoped that everyone had a wonderful Christmas, and New Year in the mean time. Once again, a venue was unable to be located for our meeting, so Khate Anderson (Carrie Conner) & Faith Kore graciously opened their home up for us to hold a meeting at. We turned it into a potluck as well. Because this was a residential location, we had to make the meeting an RSVP meeting only, limiting it to 30 members, because of parking, and seating. We met that number, and held our meeting at 7:30pm to which Captain Hopkins started the meeting by speaking on the society's purpose and intent. He stated that the society's membership would now become functional, but that it would never be mandatory to pay and the society will always remain free to participate in. Following this discussion, Captain opened the floor for others to state what they would like to see the society do, and how we can become more involved in events around us. Tish and Tim Burt mentioned that there is a Bed Race event that takes place at Dickens on the Strand and that perhaps the society should seriously consider entering this race, as we could design a very steampunk inspired bed, and change the impression of the event all together. Discussion about the upcoming event, “A Clockwork Wonderland” was covered, and status of the event was made by Toby Lawhon, who attended this meeting. We briefly discussed future meeting locations, and then the meeting come to a close. Captain Hopkins adjourned the meeting at 10:45pm, and we had a bit of social time before departing. January 13th 2011's meeting was held at Crystal's Spaghetti and Pizza in Irving, Texas. The meeting was called to order by Captain Hopkins at 8:23pm, and the first topic on the agenda was the upcoming event of “A Clockwork Wonderland”. Updates on the event were given by Toby Lawhon, who attended this meeting. We then moved on to discuss was what covered at the January 8th meeting since it was a limited invitation meeting and many missed out on the discussions. We mentioned the bed races idea that Tish and Tim Burt had brought up, and members responded positively to the idea. Ramon Fagan mentioned an article he wrote for a website (the name of the site was missed in the process of note-taking – apologies!). He had written about their experience at Dickens on the Strand, which turned out to be a very big event with heavy impact on the community in a very positive way. If steampunk wasn't known about before, it is certainly known about now after that event. Several SIS members were features in photographs in Ramon's article [update: unfortunately, after this article was published online, a server crash or suspected hacking was made on the website.....(continued on page 4) Page 3

hosting the article and the article was lost amongst many others. Ramon states that he is able to provide another copy, so hopefully it will be up again soon for others to read.] Special guest speaker, James Leavings, stopped in to talk about his upcoming event called, “The Difference Engine” which he says will be a New Year's even Steampunk theme ball. The event is planned for December 31st 2011. Mr. Leavings also runs Yulecon, which takes place in December. He wanted to speak with SIS members to get some feedback on what society member's would be interested in, and see what they thought about the events and entertainment he was considering for that evening. He spoke of having bands, art shows, fashion shows, and a silent auction that could also be bid on, online. He mentioned having a gaming room for youths, ballroom dancing classes, other instructional classes, costume rental, and much more. All of these are simply thoughts and ideas right now, so if you have any feedback, you can contact him through his website, www.the-difference-engine.info. Before the meeting come to close, Tim Stevens asked for anyone interested in volunteering their time to help with a film he was producing, and that if interested, then to please get in touch with him. Tim mentioned that in his film he is working on, that he would like there to be props like a ticking bomb, backpack time machine, various steampunk weapons, and so forth. Tim Stevens did the filming and production of “A Clockwork Wonderland” promotional film. Memberships were also spoken about for SIS and stated that this would remain free for all, but optional for those interested in paying, there would be keepsakes offered very soon. In relation to that topic, someone (I didn't catch their name – so very sorry!) mentioned that having SIS badge holders for conventions with the SIS logo on it would be a neat item to offer. For raffle, Brian Elliot donated a walking cane. Thank you to Brian for his generous donation! Ramon mentioned that at “A Clockwork Wonderland” they would be showing Nickel Children, and soon, there it will become commercialized, and released on DVD. He stated that he is very interested in getting folks from SIS to watch the film and and be interviewed on film about the showing, giving our take on the film so that this may be possibly something placed on the DVD before it's release. One more member (also did not catch his name – sorry!) mentioned a LARP (live action role playing)/RPG event coming up soon and that more information on this event could be found at www.aftermath.com. Khate Anderson also quickly mentioned that people interested in volunteering for the Clockwork Wonderland event need to get in touch with her after the meeting and let her know when they can work. We had many new visitors come to this meeting. Among them was Everette R. I. Krowley III (Erik), who won the raffle, which was the cane. Congratulations to him! Captain Hopkins adjourned the meeting at 9:54pm, and members departed. A few members gathered over at Ramon & Radha's for conversation, tea, and a viewing of Nickel Children. Thanks, once again, goes out to Ramon and Radha for their generosity and hospitality.

FUTURE MEETINGS & EVENTS A small calendar of future dates is provided below. Please NOTE that dates & times are subject to change, especially if they are close to, or on, a holiday. We encourage members and visitors alike to let us know of possible meeting locations. If there are questions about what is required for a meeting location to be considered a possibility, please speak with Stephanie Moran and she will be more than happy to help you. We need people to consider contacting their local libraries, and recreational halls. Thank you to all who have helped in the past to locate a meeting place, and/or provide a place for SIS to meet at. Other events are posted on our forum, which can be found by going to www.steampunkis.org and clicking on “FORUM” on the menu. Sometimes events are posted by other members, and groups will form to attend said events. Society established and organized events will be always posted here in the newsletter.
