Delbert McClinton—Thursday Night

STEAM’s Talk w/RMF Lineup Delbert McClinton is a true Texan, but unfortunately doesn’t get down to South Texas very often, so when I heard he was going to be at the Rockport Music Festival this year I jumped to get to say hello… Rusty—We’re here in Corpus Christi and calling about the Rockport Music Festival. Is this your second? DM—Oh, yeah. We had ourselves a good time down there last year. The group behind me for the Rockport Music Festival is going to be: Bob Brell on guitar, Mike Joyce on bass, Bruce Caps on piano, Tom Hambridge on drums, Quinton Lair on trumpet, and Dana Robins on tenor sax. R—We have a connection – you played in Oslo Norway a few years back with a group of my friends, Orbo and the Longshots we had signed them to a distribution deal a few years ago. DM—Sure, sure,I remember them. That was a lot fun and we did a duet together. R—Yeah, they’re a real good group of people. So, where are you now and what CD are you touring with? DM—We’re in Nashville touring with my latest CD, Acquired Taste. I am always touring and this summer is going to be a full load, lots of work. R—As you know STEAM is Texas oriented and we know you’re a born and bred Texan, so how of-

04

ten do you get back to Texas and down here to South Texas? DM—We play Texas just about every year, but that far south? Not real often, so we’re looking forward to it in June. We’ll see you then!

Marsha Ball

Rusty— I read that you are produced by Gary Nicholson and that you have been nominated for quite a few Grammys. I saw that you are based out of Austin now and your tour schedule is really aggressive and busy, so do you get to play down here in South Texas often? MB— I used to play more in South Texas, but not much lately. There used to be a place in Corpus we’d play and another in Port Aransas where we’d play and fish for the holidays. I love getting down there and now I’m excited that we’ll be playing at the Rockport Music Festival. R— Do you tour with the same musicians you record with or do you have different groups you play with? M— I use the same band on tour as I record with. The bass player is Don Bennett, the drummer is Damien Llanes and he’s from Corpus Christi. We have Mike Schermer on guitar and Thad Scott on saxophone. We make a lot of music for a small band! R— I know you are an amazing blues piano player and singer, can you tell me about your recent awards?

MUSIC

M— I was recently honored with the 2012 Pinetop Perkins Piano Player Award at the Blues Music Awards. This past April I was inducted in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and in 2010 I was inducted in the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame. R— Wow that is just awesome! Well, I know you are extremely busy and I want to keep this short. Is there anything you’d like to say to the STEAM readers? M— I just want you all to know that I am really looking forward to coming down to the Rockport Music Festival!

Angela Strehli, Blues Broads

R—How long have the Blues Broads been together? AS—Started with Tracy Nelson and myself. She’s in Nashville and she’d come out here to the Bay Area (San Francisco) and use my band and we’d do shows together. And that was real fun. Then my husband

Marsha Ball—Saturday Night

owns a really cool venue out here, Rancho Nicasio, and we’d play there once or twice a year for a barbeque where we would invite other artists to sit in with us like Maria Muldaur and Marcia Ball. That went on for a few years and then Annie Sampson joined up with us and she was just so wonderful we said we needed her every time. Then about three years ago Dorothy Morgan, who sang “Oh Happy Day”, joined us and said this really is fun. And that was when we started to get a little more serious. R—What CDs will you have available at the Rockport Music Festival? AS - This last fall we were filmed and will be releasing that video as a CD/ DVD package on Delta Groove, Blues Broads. This package is not going to be released yet, so this is a sneak preview of that package! We all have our The Blues Broads—Saturday @ 5PM

own style and have each other to back us up, so you will find that we have a really fun and exciting show. R—How often do you get to play South Texas? AS—You know I try to make it out to Antone’s anniversary every year, but that has really been my extent of playing in Texas for quite a while. So this is a real homecoming, because I’ve been out here for the last twenty years and it’s really hard to get a group this big and diverse out. We’ll be playing at the Dosey Doe in Houston on Thursday and we’ve got Friday off so we will be fresh and ready to play in Rockport on Saturday at 5:00 pm. We always like to play early, when the audience is still coherent, ha-ha. On Sunday night we’ll be in Austin at Threadgill’s South. That’s it for Texas, because then we’re back to California for the Monterey Jazz Festival. R—It is really great to hear how excited you are about the Blues Broads. Would you introduce your band to the STEAM readers and do you have anything else to add? AS — I’d like to introduce our band: Paul Revelli on drums, Steve Ehrmann on bass, Gary Vogensen on guitar, and Mike Emerson on keyboards. And really just a final note on us. Tracy’s done every kind of music you can do. She has mainly been on the blues side and her band, Mother Earth, is country-blues. Annie was in a rock group, Stone Ground, here in California and Dorothy was Gospel. So it’s all these kinds of elements coming together that give you a real exciting interaction! We are just thrilled to be doing the Rockport Music Festival and we think we’re going to move some people.

Sometimes I hear a song and it makes me laugh how simple it is... Those are the ones on the radio! Massive hits making the writer and artist a boat load of money. We as writers tend to over think the song. We hope the listener gets our message through the vague snippets of information we weave seemingly, effortlessly into our verse. The pitfall to the divine interpretation of our thought process is we know what the song is about; our listener has to figure that out for themselves. So... square one is to write like you are painting a picture (not a Picasso) but rather a very simple scene that anybody can relate to. Love in all its glory and intrigue is a great writer’s tool. But if you say I love you because you make me feel like the wind... well that will blow past anybody that lives in an apartment, and never feels the ‘country’ experience. Rather you could write, you make me feel like concrete... concrete is cold, and hard, and rough... so that kind of works. Anyway, what I’m hoping to convey is that specifics are NOT a good idea when trying to write a commercial song (I know I’ll catch hell from my Texas compadres about this) Think about Rodney Crowell’s most popular songs, they are always compar-

They can’t possibly feel how we feel in the song we’ve written, especially if the song is about you. Nobody cares about your personal problems; they might want to hear about their problems. But really they want to escape the problems they have... and ‘Red Solo Cup’ is an escape.

Simply ask the owner of the venue at which you are playing if a license has been purchased for performing cover material. If not, you might do well to be cautious about playing any high-profile cover songs.

Backstage Legal Summer is upon us and with it we enter the season of music festivals. Across America bands will be playing outdoor festivals in cities, open fields, and regular concert venues. One of the great parts of this time of year is hearing semiprofessional musicians playing their songs for whoever will listen. On any given weekend you might hear a great song that you’ve heard before by an artist who is only known in his own home town. You might hear a perfectly-executed cover of an old favorite by a local artist on the verge of stardom, or you might hear a reworking of a classic piece. For those of us who will be participating in this time-honored tradition from the stage, a word of caution: be careful when you play copyrighted material. Everybody does it and it’s perfectly legal - as long as you don’t get caught - in which case you may have to pay royalties to the owner of the song. Of course, many (if not most) songwriters out there don’t care and are flattered when their music is covered. But also remember that most songs are not entirely owned by one person or entity. Anyway, that’s not what I’m talking about. Generally speaking, almost every song released prior to 1922 is in the public domain. Beyond that, many songs released up through the mid 1950s and even into the 60s were never renewed by their original owners. Do a little research

said that worked for me and the rest is history. Rosehill refers to the road Mitch and I grew up on, Cypress Rosehill Road. Melba: How do you describe your music? Blake: Country music infused with all of our influences. Rock, Americana, and red dirt. Basically a melting pot of all the things we love about music. Texas’ Own ROSEHILL Rosehill is Texas Country Duo Blake Myers and Mitch McBain from Cypress, Texas. They began playing music together in high school and formed the alternative country band Texas High Life. However after college life lead them in a different direction and their writing and music style evolved into what is now Rosehill. In 2009, Country recording artist and singer/songwriter, Radney Foster agreed to produce them after hearing their 4-track acoustic demo. Rosehill’s first album White Lines and Stars produced by Foster which was released in 2010 has a little something for everyone. Rosehill has released four singles from the debut album, the most recent being “Sunday”. They have also had the privilege of opening up for Bob Seger! I caught up with Blake and asked him about that and few other questions about Rosehill.... Melba: How did you decide on the name Rosehill? Blake: We came up with a thousand different names and they all sucked! We were getting close to going into the studio and really needed a name. We were sitting over at Mitch’s house and out of nowhere he just blurted out “Rosehill”. I

Blake: It was in Corpus Christi. It was a feeling that I still can’t get over. So much joy and pride you can’t help but smile. Greatest feeling in the world! Melba: What’s some of your favorite places/venues to play? Blake: Anywhere in Corpus Christi. It’s easily our favorite town to play. Gruene Hall. The Firehouse Saloon in Houston. Antone’s in Austin. Really, as long as the venue treats you nice, it’s a favorite place to play. When you are on the road, you can’t help but miss home, so any venue that treats you like family is special. Melba: Rosehill tours a lot, what do you dislike and like about being on the road? Blake: Being away from our families. That is the toughest part by far, but seeing new places and meeting new people that makes up for it. Every town is different but the common denominator is the love of music. It is always fun! Melba: What cd do you have in the

player in the tour van right now? Blake: Dan Adams Band, “Feels Like Home” Melba: Here’s a question from a fan...”How do you keep going and going and going?” Blake: We have a great support group that won’t let us stop! Our families are the best!!!! Melba: You opened for Bob Seger in Dallas last year! What was that like? Blake: The craziest 72 hours of our lives! The show, the press, American Airlines Center, and Mr. Seger himself ! It was awesome and something we will never forget. Melba: You’ve had a couple of videos on CMT...Midnight America and Dream It All Over Again. What was that like seeing them on TV for the first time? Blake: Surreal. We grew up in a time when music videos were really how you heard new music. So to see our own on TV really blew us away. Melba: Do you each have a favorite song from “White Lines and Stars”? Blake: White Lines and Stars and Mitch’s is Believer. Melba: When can we expect a new cd from Rosehill? Blake: The first single will be released in August and the album will be out in October. Rosehill plays Corpus Christi as often as they can! Their shows are full of energy and always a good time! RustyHicks Hicks by:by:Rusty The next time you are on your way to or from San Antonio and need a cool diversion from the regular routine stop in at the 7-Brothers Saloon and meet Felix Abrigo. My wife and I went to 7-Brothers Saloon to hear Jason Maddox, Pake Rossi, Richie Allbright, and George Hermes and check out one of the coolest and unique places around. Since there is not an address the best directions are to take Highway 181 eleven miles north of Beeville, just between Nomanna and Tuleta keep your eyes open for the 7-Brothers Saloon sign. We got to hear Felix sing a few songs that night also; Felix will be recording some songs he has written soon.

Jason Maddox and Felix Abrigo Back in 1993 an old metal barn was transformed into a saloon by Felix Abrigo, his five brothers, and his father, who they considered to be just one of the guys; hence, 7-Brothers Saloon. The idea was to build a gathering place for friends, family, and new-comers. On the inside there are pool tables, band stand, and a jukebox. On the outside you will find a grass volleyball court and a basketball hoop as well as a bar-b-Que. Abrigo books a wide variety of bands and if you are not feeling up to the drive home bring your RV, camper, or trailer as Abrigo has just opened an RV camping area at the 7-Brothers Saloon.

to develop a rapport with the audience before they care who you are and are willing to participate and become a part of what you’re doing. Finally, end on a climactic high. Save the best song for last and when you’re done don’t linger on stage. Say thank you and get to the merch table quick, because if you’ve created an amazing show your new fans will be there to buy your record and want to get to know you.

by Mason Shirley Last month I discussed

a few principles on how to find more success as a musician. This month I’m continuing that discussion by providing four tips on how to transform your live show into a dynamic, entertaining, and memorable experience rather than simply playing through the set list. This is very important because a band is given one shot to win over fans at a show, and for the musician the fans are the employer. They buy the records, merchandise, and tickets that generate income for the musician to continue creating and entertaining. Tip 1: Create moments. People go to a show for an experience. We remember emotions evoked from a concert more than a particular song, guitar solo, or an amazing vocal run. Now those things are important, but it’s how you’re doing it that counts. The easiest guitar solo in the world could create a memorable moment in the show by the guitar player moving to the front of the stage, and the front man joining him there while playing air guitar. Maybe at the end of the solo they could high-five each other. While this may seem a little silly, I guarantee people will remember the interaction between the lead guitarist and front man, and that’s what a show is all about: creating memorable moments that will make the audience feel something. Tip 2: Less talk more rock. If you’re not a famous rock star, the majority of the audience will not care what you have to say. Don’t rely on pointless, uninteresting banter to fill time or make up for lack of preparation. Keep the show moving with your music. If you do talk, make sure it’s

From Garage Band to Local Legend & Beyond: Part 2 planned out as a part of your show. Furthermore, there should never be awkward silence. Remember, people attend concerts because they want to feel something, and that something isn’t awkwardness. Always be sure that your show has an interesting focal point and a seamless progression. Tip 3: The front man/woman has the power. What’s the difference between an amateur front man and a professional front man? A professional front man makes the show happen while an amateur front man just lets the show happen. A good front man is proactive and learns how to keep the audience captivated every step of the way. This means bringing emotion into every song, both sonically and aesthetically. If your song has a climactic bridge or chorus, then get on your knees, flail around, jump off an amp, or do something to show the emotion behind the lyrics. If you are not into your song nobody will be into your song.

in the same way. Come out with a bang at the beginning. Have a cool intro planned out that will capture the audience’s attention and make them want to stick around for more. The middle is the time to get the audience involved and show them who you are. Band member introductions and slower mid tunes should be in the middle. You have

How do you make the jump from a garage band to a local legend and beyond? Define what you want to do with your music and develop a plan to get there. Create a unique brand that makes people relate to your music and to your personality. And finally, plan out a seamless, emotion-packed show.

Mason Shirley—Record Producer

Tip 4: Think about your show as a dynamic movement. Almost everything that exists in the universe has a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning and end are usually the most exciting and interesting, while the middle keeps us intrigued enough to see what happens at the end. Think about your show

CD Reviews

TEJAS BROTHERS Rich Man

Get your dancing shoes on and get ready to shake, step or “Wiggle,” courtesy of one of the most entertaining acts in the Texas music circuit.

Their sophomore album entitled Rich man, gives listeners a fresh taste of what the Tejas Brothers have built on since forming in 2006. With hints of Tejano, Americana and some swinging zydeco, they’ve put together a solid 13-track record fit to entertain the likes of any listener or onlooker at their live shows.

come a hot commodity in the Fort Worth, Texas area. Lex slings together some mean licks in a subtle fashion in songs like, “This Little feeling” and “How I’ve Been.” Both of which are complete opposites as “This Little Feeling” takes on an upbeat, get on your feet and boogie feel, while “How I’ve Been” embodies a more somber and darker song for those with a broken heart. “Long Way to Texas” probably has the most intense renderings off the album with its high energy and dynamic duo of back and forth accordion and guitar. This song also has one of those nice twists toward the end of the track as the entire band goes full jam session out of nowhere. Another track that seems to have become a fan favorite comes in the form of “Wiggle,” yes…”Wiggle.” As funny as the title is, the song delivers a sense of family and good times, definitely a song someone will be grooving to after throwing back a few. To round out the album Perez delivers a wholesome dedication to his father with the title track, “Rich Man.” As one of the most complete tracks on the album, the lyrics give listeners a closer look into the sincerity and songwriting abilities of Perez and the rest of the gang. “Old hands and tired feet, sometimes all I do is sleep and I don’t have a dime but after all this time, I’m a rich man,” the brothers write in their song.

Throughout the album lead man Dave Perez lays down some impressive sounds from his trusty accordion. Whether it’s a fun and quirky song or a serious ballad, Perez knows how to pull it together and make it work by providing his own twists. The opening track, “Say it Again” demonstrates just that once it hits a listener’s ear. His accordion play along with the meshing of vocals makes for the perfect concoction of fun simplistic harmonies that suite the entire band.

Anyone who has learned valuable lessons from their father may take a liking to this one, especially for those who can relate to the story centered around the song.

The most interesting complex of the band though comes from their versatility on the album. Not only do all of them connect vocally but also their instrumentals take their sound to a unique height. With brothers Lex Cochran on guitar and Danny Cochran on drums, it’s no wonder they’ve be-

Richie Allbright

Kickin’ Down the Doors

Allbright is Alright by Shawn Blair

Some country singers rely on changing their “sound” to keep current with new listeners. Some artists sing about women who think their tractor is sexy, or why their girlfriend should really check them for ticks. Then again, some traditional country singers don’t need all that nonsense. Richie Allbright sings about his own ups and downs, and his accomplishments and failures in his new album Kickin’ Down the Doors.

Releasing his second studio album since 2009, Mathis-born Richie Allbright uses witty and truthful lyrics, classic riffs, and a distinct voice to put together a collection of tracks able to suit any true Texas country dancer. If you like country singers like Merle Haggard or Waylon Jennings then you will really like what Allbright has to offer. You might confuse his name with Waylon Jennings’ drummer “Richie Albright,” but you cannot confuse his sound. He might have one of the most truthful albums released in a long time as he sings about conquering his drug addiction and his struggles with past loves. Without a doubt, listening to Kickin’ Down the Doors makes you want to find his next local show to carve some grooves in the dance floor. This album has some upbeat, faster tracks as well as slower songs to hold your darlin’ a little bit closer. Allbright has surely proven his ability to change it up and show a good time. When you finish the last track, you will only have one question: “When is Richie Allbright coming to town?”

417 Starr St

Top to bottom the Tejas Brothers have brought together a solid follow up to their re repertoire of material and with a mere six years under their belt, the best is yet to come.

CC Metal Then and Now, Chapter 1

By Rusty Hicks, co/writer Tamma Hicks Since moving here a year and a half ago I have heard from a lot people that there isn’t a metal scene in the Corpus Christi area. Man, were those people wrong! Not only did I find a thriving scene with good venues, but bands that have been around for decades, groups that have gone national, and those that are just starting out. The dilemma I have run into is that I can’t fit every well deserving band into this article nor do I want to say it’s too overwhelming and drop it, so what is an old hippie to do? Write a Metal Series that introduces bands and venues! These are quick introductions that will get your mind in a state of guitar screaming, bass thumping, and metal roaring so that you want some more! For Chapter 1, I have chosen newcomer Switchblade Jesus, for the old-timers we have This Dying Dream and Purple Mushroom, and the first venue is Zeros. Rock on!

Switchblade Jesus

I met up with Eric Calvert at the House of Rock a few times, but I have to say that getting the bands answers to me to write was not all that easy; until we chatted on Facebook! Here’s what I found out about Switchblade Jesus… R – Can you tell me who’s in the band and how did you come up with the name? SJ - In the band we have Peter Quarnstrom with vocals, Eric Calvert and Billy Guerra on guitar, Jason Beers on bass, and Jon Elizondo on drums. The story behind our name is… Jon and Jason where in a bar when a fight broke out, one of their buddies said, “Hey don’t worry about it,” as he turned and pointed at his friend with long hair and said, “Jesus has a knife!” R – Do you have any bands

16

from Corpus Christi that influenced you? SJ – When I was young I didn’t go to many local shows, though one band, not exactly here, but big in the Texas South made an impression and that was Dead Horse from Houston. R – I really liked what I heard from you on stage, do you have any albums cut? SJ - We’re in the process of starting to record, we have been checking out LOOP Studios and will probably record there. R – Are you planning on touring when the CD’s done? SJ - Touring is something we will definitely do, but a few of the guys have some young’uns so it will be a little bit before we go out too far, but in the meantime we’ll be doing a lot of local and out of town Texas shows real soon. R – What gigs do you have coming up? SJ - Show wise on June 8th we are at The Texan with Drugernaut and Delirium, June 14th we will be at the House of Rock with Chili Wolf and Poison Lemonade, and July 17th we’re at Zeros with Goatwhore, Killamora, and Texas Hate Machine. We have a few more in the works but those are the finalized ones.

to Precision Studio to record with Robert Beltron in June. We’ve got Eddie Hernandez to do photos for our cover. We’re going with a zombie theme, but we haven’t come up with the title yet. And one of our goals is to get Casey Cocker for our music video – hasn’t happened yet, but we are trying. So with recording and all we’re going to be on break mid-June until the CD is done and then we’ll come back with a big CD release party, probably in August. R – Do you have any news to share? TDD – We will be playing two benefit shows: June 2nd at Zeros and June 15 at Entourage. Both benefits are fundraisers for our new album and will feature a show and BBQ. R – Very cool. I can’t wait to hear your new CD in August. Thanks for taking a few minutes with me.

I met Kenny Green and Raymond Salinas of This Dying Dream they have been around for quite a few years . R – How long have you been together? TDD – The name has been around for about seven years and it’s had it different members, in and out. The original players are Raymond Salinas, Eric Chavez (drums), Josef Saldana (guitar). Our newest players are Kenny Green (bass) and David Gomez (guitar). R – You guys have a lot of fun on stage. I haven’t seen that much excitement on stage since Seattle. TDD – You know it just depends on the crowd and this was a great crowd! We try to interact with the crowd and make everyone feel good at the same time as really pushing out our stuff. R – So I hear you guys are getting ready to record. What can you tell me about that? TDD – We’re going

I heard about Purple Mushroom and had to see for myself ! PM - My name is Leon Calderon and I’m in Purple Mushroom. We’ve been together for 38 years – we started back in high school in 1973 or 74. We’re still rockin’! R – Has it been that same band for 38-years? PM – I was in another band for a couple of years, but when we’d gotten back from tour in 1987 I came back to Purple Mushroom, but yeah, for the most part we are still the same band. R – Who are you band members? PM – Well, there’s me, Leon (guitar/vocals), my brother Richard Calderon (guitar/vocals), Ruben Rodriguez (drums) who’s been with us since 1975, and our newest member is the bass player, who used to play with a group here in the 70’s, Slammer. Our old bass player was with us for 30 years decided it was time to take a break. R – How many CDs do you have out? PM – We have two Rock en Español (Spanish language metal) albums from 1996 and 2000 out on Hacienda Records. Then we were in Miami and recorded one there. We’re in the studio now recording a new demo and

are planning with some friends of ours to do a video. The song is “Wars” and people seem to think it has a good message to it. R – After 38 years you must have played just about everywhere here? PM – Oh yeah. We’ve played thousands of gigs all over the area. R – Zeros is one of the few metal clubs left isn’t it? I mean there’s only a few like Zeros, The Texan, and House of Rock. PM – Actually there are lot more clubs then there used to be. For a while there clubs just weren’t hiring bands and now live music is making a comeback. We’ve even added an acoustical set because we learned on the rule, “always back to basics.” But now, Clubs have just started springing up. R – I know that you run sound for a lot of the shows around town,do you have a company? PM – I have a sound rental business that I run on the side. I’d rather be playing music, but if I’m not playing I can still make some money. I like running sounds and helping out bands and shows. We don’t really have a name – it’s more of word of mouth to get us to work your show. Zeros Hard Rock Club I’m talking with Mark Sieber, who has owned Zeros Hard Rock Club for the past 26 year. Zeros has become a mainstay for local, regional, and national artists, whether they are in to have a drink, listen to some jams, or play some chops. R - Hi Mark. Thanks for taking time for this. As you know STEAM is writing an article on the state of metal music in Corpus Christi and Zeros has played a big part. So how did you get into the metal music business? MS – My brother Larry and I moved here from Wisconsin and we had another brother that was in the Navy stationed

STEAMTX.COM

here in Corpus Christi. We grew up in a family of nine kids and owned a restaurant, so it was only a natural progression for us to think about a bar and this seemed like a good city for it. We came into this little ol’ redneck, cowboy bar where the older people would come in during the day and there wasn’t much business at night. So the next thing you know we started just booking some of the local rock bands and then some national acts and it just blew up from there. R – Who are some the big names you’ve had there? MS – Gary Richrath, the original guitarist for REO Speedwagon. There were two local bands that started out here, Devastation (Combat Records) and Anger Wad (Metal Blade Records), so there was a big scene going on when we took this place over. LA Guns, Agent Orange, and some of the players from Gwar have all played here. Probably the biggest show we’ve had was Paul Di’Anno of Iron Maiden. Drowning Pool played here before they were anything and then they hit it with “Bodies”. We’ve had everything from heavy metal to punk to rock. R – Are there any bands from the past that really stand out in your memory? MS – Killamora is just great and they can pack the place out quick. The Booked with Trey Garcia is another that comes to mind quickly, they’re on Radical Records. R –I know you’ve got a big show tonight, so thanks again for talking with me.

BURN

it down! — Dennic McNett

Wolfbats Beseech the Great Bear of Oso Bay. Friday April 27th, 2012; what a night for Corpus Christi. I started the

evening by attending a movie screening by South Texas Cinemateque called Where Soldiers Come From (See Indie Film Spotlight article) at the Museum of South Texas. Then I immediately headed over to the House of Rock to catch the start of a parade put on by the Oso Bay Bienniel and an artist from Brooklyn, NY named Dennis McNett AKA The Wolfbat. McNett and Ryan Omalley, printmaking professor at TAMUCC, lead a pack of howling beasts throughout the streets of Corpus pulling a viking ship made by Holdsteady Crew of sculptors and artists at TAMUCC. The HSC also did an iron pour on the beach where the ship eventually burned through the night. A metal band called Voyage of Slaves did their thing while stuffed in a pavilion overlooking McGee Beach

WolfBAT where the ship eventually met it’s demise. It was performance art at its best, and the city did it’s part by letting OBB burn a ship on the beach and CC spectators cheered and hollered at the spectacle. At one point I had a parade of vikings and surly beasts behind me, a fireworks show in front, a carnival and light show to the right, and an iron pour on the beach with a live metal band to the left. For one night Corpus was not just the place to be in Texas, but the nation. Corpus is on it’s way to such stardom and it will take events like this to get us there. A special thanks is due to Ryan

Omalley, Dennis McNett, Dirty Printmakers of America, The Amazing Hancock Bros., Jenny Schmid, Tom Huck, Bill Fick, Threads, DJ Otto, Holdsteady, TAMUCC Art Department, Burning Bone Press, Industry Printshop, Corpus Police Dept., Corpus Fire Dep., Art museum of South Texas, & anyone else not mentioned.
