The Steamboat Springs Public Works Department is reminding residents how to prevent frozen pipes during cold weather: ■ Know the location of your water shut-off and test it regularly. In most single-family homes, the shut-off valve is in the basement or the crawlspace where the water pipe enters the house. ■ Winterize unheated or vacant buildings to avoid property damage and water loss. ■ Insulate water pipes that may be vulnerable to the cold or have caused problems in the past. Pipes close to exterior walls or in unheated basements can be wrapped with insulation. ■ During a deep freeze (minus 5 degrees or below), open cabinet doors that lead to exposed pipes (such as access doors for sinks), so that household air can warm pipes. Keep garage doors shut, and keep your thermostat set above 65 degrees. ■ If you think a pipe already has frozen, thaw the pipe as soon as possible or call a plumber for help. If you do it yourself, shut off the water and slowly thaw. A hair dryer trained at the frozen area of the pipe is appropriate. A blow-
Mainstreet Steamboat in need of creative volunteers Mainstreet Steamboat Springs is in need of volunteers to help create programs and events that will benefit downtown businesses and the community. Volunteers are asked to work two to four hours per month. Specifically, volunteers are needed for the Promotion Committee, which plans special events, retail events and branding. Library will waive overdue fees during Teen Read Week As part of Teen Read Week, the Bud Werner Memorial Library will waive overdue fines for teens ages 13 to 18 who visit the library from Sunday to Oct. 20. Bud Werner Memorial Library and the U.S. Forest Service host a live webcast of the Bracken Bat Cave, the summer home of the world’s largest bat colony, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Library Hall. Millions of Mexican free-tailed bats live in the cave from March through October. Local bat expert and wildlife biologist Apple Snider will be present to share more information and answer questions. The event is part of the library’s Batober, which includes the return of Organization for Bat Conservation Director Rob Mies and interactive live bat encounter programs Oct. 21.
