Spring 2018

| Art News | Opportunities | Exhibitions | Art Events |

Welcome to our spring edition of State of the Arts. Recently, it’s been great to see the progression of a new mural on the main highway of Pātea celebrating the diversity of our ocean reef in the South Taranaki bight. Project Reef Life (a community led science investigation into a reef 11km offshore of Pātea), was delighted to receive South Taranaki Creative Communities funding to commission Taranaki artist, Phil Jones, to create a public artwork. Local art students were given the opportunity to learn about the creative methods by Phil and public engagement from those passing by was ‘an incredibly positive, very rewarding, humbling and engaging aspect of the mural process’ according to project co-ordinator, Karen Pratt (pictured with Phil Jones). Thanks to the support of the building owners – The Estate of Dalvanius Prime – and additional funding provided by the South Taranaki Underwater Club and supporters, this project has been a very successful one. If you have ideas about a creative project you would like to achieve in your community, I encourage you to check out opportunities for funding offered by the Creative Communities Scheme. I am always happy to discuss your project ideas and support you with your application. A new art & design store opens in Ōpūnake on 1 September. Kete Aronui features selected work by a range of Taranaki artists and will also provide an online store – all the best for your new venture. I’m also looking forward to seeing what the Ōpūnake community has created for the spectacular Great Ōpūnake Yarn Bomb this year. Arts Fest South Taranaki kicks off this spring – I encourage you to get out there, support our galleries and artists, enjoy an event and learn a new skill at one of the great workshops on offer. Ngā mihi,

Korimako Lane Public Artwork Project

The panel for the STDC Korimako Lane Public Artwork project met recently to choose three proposals from the nine options sent in by seven artists. The panel members congratulate all artists for their contributions – the standard was extremely high and included a variety of ideas using a range of mediums. From a freestanding wire and bead structure with Korimako sound, to mixed media wall hanging, as well as corten steel and rock carving sculptures, it was clear artists had given the brief a great deal of thought and had connected the importance of the name of the new laneway to the creation of an art piece which would give gravitas and presence to its new home. Shortlisted artists will now create a concept design to be presented to the panel later in September, when a final selection will be made for this public art commission.
