WELCOME TO ST. CLOUD Historically speaking...

St. Cloud began as three separate settlements on the Mississippi River which were founded by three extremely different men. One of the town sites was begun by a former slave owner who was involved in the fur trade, bringing slave-owning Southerners to the area. A second settlement was begun by a professional town-entrepreneur who attracted Protestants opposed to slavery. The third site was intended for a sawmill which drew Catholics from Germany. In spite of the differences, the three settlements eventually merged into one city in 1856. The name “St. Cloud” was chosen to reflect the area’s French heritage, being named after a suburb of Paris, France. Soon after, granite deposits were discovered and area granite companies began shipping granite to sites all over the world. Today, in addition to granite production, the area is a center for education and retail, and is one of the state’s popular destinations for recreation and tourism. | 8 |

A most friendly climate! Central Minnesota is a theater of the seasons. Spring is alive with color, from crab apple trees to tulips and daffodils. The summers are warm and balmy with quickly passing thunderstorms. Our autumns are crisp and clear with abundant fall foliage colors. Even our winters are beautiful with hoarfrost and crystal snowfalls. But don’t be fooled – always check the thermometer before heading outside!

Lake George

The Lake George restoration project was a joint effort between the St. Cloud Rotary Club, St. Cloud Technical College students and state and county agencies. Originally a swamp that drained to the Mississippi River, over the last three years, Lake George, a small lake on the fringe of Downtown, has gone from a gravel and lawn grass shoreline to a natural habitat of trees, shrubs, native grasses, and wildflowers. Following a number of years of shoreline improvements, in 2008, total renovation of the ice-skating warming house, reception area for renting paddleboats and canoes was completed. Recent additions, funded extensively by the St. Cloud Rotary Club, included 28,000 square

feet of paved walkways, new seating and lighting, a delightful wooden trellis, and a showpiece Bonestroo-designed granite fountain and plaza space. Adjacent to Lake George is a small pond with swan house, a new splash pad, public restroom, playground area, and concession building. Used for a number of different events throughout the year, the highlight of the summer at Lake George was Summertime by George, a Wednesday night free concert and festival put on by the Rotary Club of St. Cloud, with Rotarians volunteering over 1500 hours over the course of 12 weeks. Whatever the season, don’t miss this spectacular St. Cloud attraction!

Quarry Park Truly a local treasure, Quarry Park and Nature Preserve (formerly known as “Hundred Acres Quarry”) is the largest park in the Stearns County Parks System.

The 643-acre park is a fascinating look at the early granite industry in the Central Lakes area, and it is a haven for those who love the outdoors. Natural features include scenic woodlands, open prairie, wetlands, and unquarried bedrock areas, with many trails winding throughout the park. Plant life includes everything from oaks and aspens to yellow ladyslippers, Indian paintbrush and prickly pear cactus. Man-made features include sizeable hills composed of quarried rock remnants (grout piles) and 30 granite quarries, most of which are now filled with water and form picturesque rock-fringed ponds – which are surprisingly clear and deep. Hills afford spectacular views of the landscape and a new observation deck provides a unique perspective. Vehicle parking permits can be purchased at the contact station or from the Stearns County Parks Department (320-255-6172). Picnic, swim, hike, fish, bike or cross-country ski — Quarry Park will provide you hours of enjoyment any time of year!

Munsinger & Clemens Gardens Munsinger Gardens Situated below the Clemens Gardens and along the Mississippi River, these distinctive gardens lie under towering hemlock and pine trees. As a result, many of the garden beds are in the shade, making them astounding in their abundance of color and incredible variety of flowers. Included in the park are a large peacock cage, lovely wedding pavilion, wooden gazebo, and of course, the fabulous Mississippi River.

Clemens Gardens Six gardens make up Clemens Gardens: Virginia Clemens Rose Garden, Rest Area Garden, Formal Garden, White Garden, Perennial Garden and the Treillage Garden. The six gardens draw 2,000 to 3,000 people a day during the summer, from all over the world. So, whether you’re a weekend gardener or professional horticulturist, visit soon and find the flavor of European gardens right here in Central Minnesota!

Granite, Granite Everywhere! Once known as the “Nitty Gritty Granite City”, St. Cloud used the above headline for a 1921 advertising campaign.

When granite deposits were found along area rivers and in land nearby, the granite industry began to develop. Granite was everywhere and even today, as you drive through St. Cloud and Central Minnesota, you’ll find buildings, houses, churches, monuments and public artwork made of granite of all kinds. One of the largest granite companies in the world is in nearby Cold Spring, and the Minnesota Correctional Facility was built on the site of the first granite quarry in St. Cloud. At one time the area claimed 19 granite companies, and the granite industry provided thousands of jobs throughout the mid1800s to present day. All of our seasons are filled with celebration and fun for the whole family! Summer brings Granite City Days with a grand parade, huge Lemonade Arts Fair and symphony concert, plus an airport fly-in and a spectacular fireworks display, which is one of the largest in outstate Minnesota. There’s also a St. Joseph Fourth of July Parade and the St. Joseph Parish Festival, true home-town expressions of patriotism and local pride. Like your parades cool and sparkling? Then you don’t want to miss the Winter Nights and Lights Parade held in early December, which is capped off with the arrival of Santa to town. For those who love sports and recreation, The Earth Day Half

Marathon in April is a big-time event, with runners from all over the region taking part. The Sartell Duathlon in June holds its own, as runners and bikers of all competitive levels participate. A variety of sporting events are popular here, with St. Cloud Division I Hockey and River Bats baseball topping the list for many. This year will be the 100th Anniversary of the Benton County Fair, with the best a county fair has to offer – 4-H displays, food vendors, a midway and great all-American fun! Held a couple of weekends later is the Benton Car Show – all you classic auto lovers take note! And then there are our festivals – Millstream Arts, Joe Town Rocks, St. Mary’s Block Party, Rapid River | 20 |

When it comes to St. Cloud’s culinary landscape, almost anything is possible. You’ll have no trouble finding food to suit every taste here! Explore accessible Downtown for a variety of offerings, starting with the Mexican Village, a colorful setting for Mexican favorites. Next, there’s the beloved House of Pizza, an area dining institution, which is second to none for spectacular pizza. One of the newest kids on the block is the White Horse Tavern, unpretentious and bustling in an updated historic storefront, serving up all-American soups, sandwiches, burgers and wings, PLUS creative dishes like winter squash ravioli and specialty curry dishes. Jules is a warm, cozy bistro, with innovative soups and sandwiches, and chef specials daily – their Date Night is a favorite with locals! You’ll find traditional Thai at

Sawatdee, so if you love Asian, this is your place! Newly opened, Biology 701 is the only vegetarian/vegan restaurant in the area – GLBT-friendly, too! If you’re searching for Italian like Momma used to make, Ciatti’s offers mouth-watering cuisine, featuring exceptional pasta dishes.....and their Happy Hour pizzas are to die for! Anton’s, located on the Sauk River, is in an old log roadhouse, known for their gigantic popovers, and Fuji is the best in the area for Japanese grill, with the talented chef’s the main attraction. Star of India serves up authentic Indian dishes, with their luncheon buffet, a must-stop for those wanting to sample a variety of flavors, and Cafe Renaissance, dramatic and appealing, offers up delicious Mediterranean dishes and wood-fired pizzas. | 40 |

White Horse

Kay’s in St. Joseph is known for its homemade pies and great home cooking. And if you crave a superb walleye dinner, Fisher’s in Avon (open May – October) is your spot. Top off your food journey at the 5th Avenue Grille in the Le St-Germain Suite Hotel, a chic, urban culinary delight, with a marvelous daily brunch and exceptional, sinfully-good lunches and dinners.

Central Minnesota Located one hour northwest of the Twin Cities, and one hour south of the northern lakes and forests of the state, St. Cloud is central to both tourism and commerce. The area comprises several communities: St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sartell, St. Joseph and Sauk Rapids, and three counties: Stearns, Sherburne and Benton. The region has experienced extraordinary growth in the past decade and, in fact, remains the most rapidly growing metropolitan area in the state. Manufacturing, retail and service industries are the commercial backbone of the region, equally supported by the extensive, highly productive farming and dairy endeavors.

Our Senior Community

The experience of maturing is rapidly evolving, forcing us to rethink what it means to “grow old.”

We are ignoring the stigma attached to “senior citizen” and making active decisions regarding the way we spend our retirement years. Many of us are going back to school, starting businesses, even training for triathlons. We are redefining our place in society by taking control of how we live, work and play. Here are some opportunities available for adults age 55+ in the St. Cloud community. • Whitney Senior Center (WSC) is committed to helping expand minds through lifelong learning because education begins at birth and continues long after retirement. Interested in learning more about our innovative and mind enriching programs? Join us at WSC for our orientation offered weekly on Mondays starting at 10:30 a.m. and the 2nd Monday each month at 6:30 p.m. We will give you a glimpse of our facility, programs and services. Check out our newly updated website (www.whitneyseniorcenter. org) for more information on how WSC can serve you. • St. Cloud Area Greeters a volunteer organization devoted to welcome convention attendees and greet at various tourism related events.

• Central Minnesota Council on Aging and the Senior LinkAge Line® are the places to call for information about senior housing, Medicare, transportation, home health care and other seniorrelated questions.

• RSVP, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program places hundreds of volunteers, 55 and over, in public and non-profit agencies in Central Minnesota. Help make your community a better place!
