‘BREAKING NEW GROUND’ TOGETHER

SCC and St. Charles County Parks and Rec Department commence 80-acre public-use park development on college’s north side The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department and St. Charles Community College have broken ground to make way for College Meadows Park, an 80acre park development situated on the north end of the SCC campus. St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann, St. Charles County Parks Director Bettie Yahn-Kramer and SCC President Ron Chesbrough, Ph.D., spoke at the event which announced details about the new development and partnership between the parks department and the college. “Together, we’re breaking new ground to offer the community something different and unique on the undeveloped college property,” said Parks Director Bettie Yahn-Kramer. Conveniently located, the new park will be designed to accommodate citizens of all ages and abilities. An outdoor fitness trail and a nine-hole disc golf course will be the featured

amenities in the park. The fitness trail will encompass 10 pieces of exercise equipment and a fitness machine that is accessible for wheelchairs. The fitness trail will connect to the existing paved walkway on campus as well as nearby greenways and schools. The disc golf course will wind through park meadows and feature concrete tee pads and professional Mach V Disc Golf Baskets. College Meadows Park is expected to open by the end of 2014.

SCC and CMU sign articulation agreement for business program Officials from Central Methodist University and St. Charles Community College signed an articulation agreement on Thursday, Aug. 7, to promote a seamless transfer for business students. The agreement provides students who have earned an Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Science degree in business administration at SCC the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in business at Central Methodist University. Any student who has earned an Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Science degree in business administration at SCC and adheres to the transfer guidelines is guaranteed CMU will accept designated freshman and sophomore education credits and all general education credits and will apply them to the bachelor’s degree in a manner consistent with the transfer guidelines. “I’m excited about what this agreement will offer our students who transfer to Central Methodist University,” said John Bookstaver, SCC dean of business, science, education, math and computer science. “This will hopefully be only one of many fruitful collaborations between our two fine institutions.” SCC and CMU already have a partnership enabling SCC nursing students to obtain their Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.


SCC employee receives Recognition of Service Excellence (ROSE) Award

Recognized with top honors at PBL National Leadership Conference More than 1,800 of America’s best and brightest college students traveled to Nashville to showcase their talents as future business leaders and vied for the opportunity to win more than $79,000 in cash awards. Paige Bogert (Troy, Mo.), Maria Pizzo (St Charles) and Paige Waltrip (Weldon Spring), all from SCC, received national recognition at the Phi Beta Lambda Awards of Excellence on June 27. Bogert, Pizzo and Waltrip competed in Business Ethics and brought home third place in the nation with $100 in addition to their award. The Business Ethics topic was Ethics in Human Resource Management Issues, and the event required the team to research a real case and present their findings and solutions before a panel of judges. In addition to the Business Ethics team, Joel Jennings (St. Charles) also competed in the Sales Presentation category after taking second at the Missouri PBL State Leadership Conference in April. Participants from across the United States were in attendance for the Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda conference June 24-27 to sharpen their core business skills, expand their networks and participate in more than 55 business and business-related competitive events.

The Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce has recognized Teresa Lovan as the 2014 recipient of the Recognition of Service Excellence award. Lovan is a cashier at St. Charles Community College and was nominated by her supervisor Patricia Haynes, director of bookstore and food services. As part of her nomination letter, Haynes said, “There are several important character traits for individuals who serve others. Teresa has them all! She shares her passions and talents for serving others with her gifts of kindheartedness, honesty, a helping initiative, hard work, guidance and performs all of these traits with humility. I have witnessed on many occasions, Teresa’s positive interactions with students, staff and community visitors.”

“The Recognition of Service Excellence Award recognizes front-line employees who go the extra step towards exemplary customer service and display a positive attitude,” said Scott Tate, president and CEO of the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce. “Teresa Lovan is the perfect example of what this award is meant to represent.”

SCC police force falls to Cottleville cops 29-27; softball game raises $4,000 With two outs and the tying runner on base in the ninth inning, SCC police officer Dave Reimers drove a pitch just inches shy of a home run, and the City of Cottleville Police defeated the SCC police and public safety officers 29-27 in a charity matchup on Aug. 13.

But the event was less about the score and more about the cause: the SCC Student Disaster Relief Fund. The game and its supporting activities and sponsors helped bring in more than $4,000 for the relief fund. The two teams are already planning a re-match.
