EXILE in concert June 7th BY EDGAR SPITZKE

Mayor Eddie Girdler has announced a special concert to be held June 7 at the Somersport Park. The concert will host three bands or acts including the band Exile and is being given as a special tribute to Marlon Dale Hargis, a long standing member of the band who is a native of Pulaski County and graduate of Pulaski County High School. He was leader of the Pulaski High Marching Maroons in l966 along with Mary Susan Diamond Down. Gates will open at the park at 4 p.m. and the concert will begin at 5. The opening act will be country singer Cindy Standage, a Nashville star who has been an opening act for Merl Haggard and other big name country performers. The second act will be the Devonshires, a band that plays 70’s type music like the Rolling Stones. Next will be a choral rendering of a medley of Exile music and hits by members from all three Pulaski County high schools. Hargis will then be presented a key to the City of Somerset in recognition of his musical accomplishments and long running engagements with the Exile Band. The concert will end with a 45-minute program of music by the Exiles. Admission to the event will be $10 per person. An article in the Southern Kentucky Health & Family

Journal written by Don White sparked the interest in honoring Hargis for his musical accomplishments, which some thought should already have been done. White’s article chronicled Hargis’ career which had its beginnings in high school. He played with some local bands while in school and then in l963 he joined the group that became the Exiles. According to White’s article, most of their number one country hits came in the 1980s and early 1990s. Hargis was their keyboard player and a vocalist. In l978 they had a number one pop tune, “Kiss You All Over.â€? He left the group in l987 and moved to Nashville, joining the Jerry Reed Band. Eventually the group stopped touring and its members went their separate ways. When the group got together for a RQH JLJ EHQHÂżW VKRZ WKH\ GHFLGHG WR JHW EDFN WRJHWKHU DQG since have been touring on their own and alongside some of the biggest names in country music. Marlon Dale Hargis is the son of the Late Marshall and Alma Slavey Hargis from the Ruth community of Pulaski County. His wife is Vicki, a professional dog groomer and they have one daughter Cressa, a paramedic in Nashville. Now 64 years old, and having an accomplished musical career since high school here in Pulaski County, it is time to recognize his contribution to the American music scene. That will be done on June 7.

What’s New in

Two Tails

You’ll Find Them All In This Edition

BY EDGAR SPITZKE

The question, “What’s New In Somerset since the last season is good not only for tourists revisiting the Lake Cumberland Area, but also for some of us not quick to recognize changes, it might help if What’s New is given some press. There is more than one new restaurant hitting the U.S. 27 strip. First, let’s notice and “old that turned “new, which is Snappy Tomato Pizza. First located in a store in front of Briar Bowl and with only carry out service the business has moved to a beautiful new building at 113 Tradepark Drive, behind Culvers. Snappy’s now has a good sized indoor eating area and can serve beer with its pizzas. They have Hoagies, calzone, many specialty pizzas and even a Chicago deep dish style pizza. Add Snappetizers, wings, salads, pasta dishes and pizza desserts and you have full meals. For parties, they have “The Beast equal to three large pizzas. At Snappy’s Pizza you can dine from their Buffet or order from the menu. Originally designed to have a large dining area and a section for electronic games, a 2,000 sq ft addition to their building is being developed as a “stateof-the-art game room with all new games and at the same level as those in Pigeon Forge. The game room should be complete by the release of this magazine and the area formerly used for games in the main dining room will be converted

Ugly Mugz 6

to a private party room. See what’s new at Snappy’s Tomato Pizza off the U.S. South strip on Tradepark Drive. On September 25, 2013 a new business opened on U.S. 27 called Two Tails. You may have noticed an old truck parked along the road with what looks like a house built on it and the words “Two Tailsâ€? and banners saying “Seafood,â€? and not got the picture yet. You stop, approach the small shop that has a barrel in front with legs sticking out like someone fell into the barrel and a menu sign. Step inside the store and you will be looking at Somerset’s only premier seafood and steak market. On the right is a meat and seafood case that has fresh items. The market gets in fresh seafood and after two days it is vacuumed sealed and put in their freezer case. What a selection!--like nothing Somerset has ever seen before, all kinds RI ÂżVK HYHQ WURXW VKULPS OREVWHUV crab (King, snow & blue), sea scallops, FODPV R\VWHUV VZRUGÂżVK UHG VQDSSHU and more. They have specialty items like alligator, octopus, goat meat, smoked salmon, salmon bratwurst and sausages, pheasant & Peking Duck, crab cakes and a variety of cheese spreads. Their Creekstone Farms black angus tender beef added to their seafood options gives you a perfect place for seafood and steak lovers. Business hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Location: 3511 So. U.S. 27, Ste 3 between lights 20 and 21. Contact at 606-679-FISH and www.TwoTailsSeafood.com. and look for them on Facebook. It may seem that featuring restaurants is loading the “What’s Newâ€? category. However, that is where a lot of changes are taking place. We’ll look at one more restaurant change, and that is most

recently a change from J-Gumbos, on the square, to “On the Squareâ€? bar and restaurant, perhaps the newest restaurant change in town. The Square Restaurant & Lounge, located at 95 South Main Street and on the corner of Main and West Mt. Vernon, has a lot to offer in food and entertainment besides beer and spirits. The Square has a wide variety of RIIHULQJV IURP JURXSHU ÂżQJHUV FKLFNHQ tenders, wings, fried pickle spears, mozzarella sticks, tater skins and more. Their “Main Street Sandwiches include burgers, grouper, Philly and Chicken 3KLOO\ &KHHVHVWHDN DORQJ ZLWK D &DWÂżVK Hoagie, You can build your own pizza, build your own salad and do “carry outâ€? if you prefer. Happy Hour and food and drink specials are from 4 to 7 pm. daily with wicked wings at $.69 each and others such as Mozarella sticks and Tater Skins at $3.99. Some mixed drinks are $3, draft pitchers $6 and draft beer at $l.50. Other new businesses in the Somerset Area are being included in this issue as “Advertorialsâ€? along with their advertisement. They are Ugly Mugz and Performance Bicycle Center, and Idle Time Marine. In addition, we could include our article on the Sheltowee 7UDFH 2XWÂżWWHUÂśV DGGLWLRQ RI D =LS /LQH ride as “something newâ€? to interest our readers. A separate article in this issue highlights that attraction. Stay & Play

SULLY’S RESTAURANT

Four Dining Experiences Under One Roof BY EDGAR SPITZKE Sully’s Restaurant can be viewed as four places in one. How? The layout of the restaurant caters to different clientele. The large center dining room with diminished lighting has been created for family dining. Off from that section is their banquet/meeting room which has the electronics for power point presentations and it gets a lot of use for meetings and special groups. The indoor bar area caters to clients who come in from work and just want to stop for a drink or a couple of beers and are content to sit at the bar or bar tables for that. Perhaps, the largest area is outside and provides two separate atmospheres for those who like to congregate for entertainment and/or association. One part of the outdoor Tiki area is out in the open and has it’s own bar along with a stage for bands and musical groups. These come in to entertain on weekend evenings. This section fits

those who in the daytime would prefer to sit in the sun and with banana trees and tropical décor gives a relaxed and festive air to enjoy. Another part of the outdoor area is covered, has its own Tiki bar, has bar height tables and stools and skylight roof design with plastic curtains, wood walls and an all glass garage door that can be closed in cooler weather and still give you an outdoor atmosphere. In last year’s Travel Guide story on Sully’s we outlined a full menu. For this article, we want to highlight the full dinner entrees that represent the “fine” dining that can be enjoyed at Sully”s. All entrees are served with your choice of two sides and table bread. The top of the list is their Filet Mignon, the King of steaks. It is an 8oz baseball cut for superior flavor and tenderness at $20.99. Next is their New York Strip, a 12 oz of premium black angus beef cooked to perfection at $19.99. Prime rib comes third on the list. For the real beef lover, their prime rib is slow roasted at the beginning of the

day. Hand cut 12 oz of prime rib is served with hot au jus for $17.99. A 12 oz Ribeye with Gorgonzola Butter is seared to your taste. Kentucky Bourbon Sirloin at $15.99, beef tips at $14.99 and ribs at ll.99 and full rack at l6.99 give you all their beef options. Sea food entrees include Guinness Battered Catfish, Parmesan Crusted Tilapia and fried or grilled shrimp. Pizza dinners include 8”, 12”, and 16” Supreme, Meat Lovers, Chicken Alfredo, BBQ chicken and Hawaiian styles. Or, you can build your own, adding your preferred toppings. For lighter fare for the summer, Sully’s offers 8 different salads, from “house”, “Greek” and “Caesars”, to salads with chicken, sirloin steak, salmon and turkey and ham, in the $8 to $10 range. They also have a variety of sandwiches, burgers and appetizers, including their popular “wings”. Sully’s has been voted “Best Bar & Grill” five years in a row.

LAKE CUMBERLAND GOLF COURSE

An Enjoyable & Challenging Championship Course BY EDGAR SPITZKE Lake Cumberland Golf Club outside of Jamestown was owned and operated by the Homeowners Association of the resort community. With a change in ownership and management it was completely renovated. Practically nothing is the same—the pro shop and cart facilities, even the layout and complexion of each tee and green and surroundings look entirely different and strikingly beautiful and “upper classâ€?. Lake Cumberland Golf Club can be described as an 18-hole championship golf course “that is not only challenging, but enjoyable for all levels of golfersâ€?, to quote Tyson Phillips, Golf Pro at the resort golf club. Behind the Club House and pro shop there is a new driving range, putting green and a short game area. This is “state-ofthe-artâ€? stuff. The golf pro, Tyson gives lessons on the driving range with suggestions to the students on form and execution, critiquing each drive to help them be more successful on the course. For a non-golfer, it was interesting to watch and see the expertise that a golf pro and lessons can contribute to one’s game. We Invite You to

Visit Among the displays at the Corps of Engineers Visitor Center is this one about Mill Springs.

BY EDGAR SPITZKE While visiting Lake Cumberland, you want to make the most of the time you are able to spend here. What do you decide to do? What activities are open to you? What places might you want to visit? What special activities, such as local festivals might interest you? Information on all these questions could be answered by visiting a local Visitation Center. There are several in the Lake Cumberland Area you might want to visit. Let us introduce you to them. For Pulaski County and surrounding June 2014

areas there is the Visitor Center located between Ky. 80 and old Ky. 80, at the intersection just before U.S. 27. They have an abundance of brochures and pamphlets detailing local points of interest, festivals and personnel at the center are available to answer your questions. The same is true for the visitor center for activities on the other side of the lake. There is a visitor center for Russell County off U.S. 127 just north of the intersection with Cumberland Parkway. A Visitor Center is manned by the McCreary County Heritage Foundation

A Must See Place for Special Coffee Lovers and Bicycle Enthusiasts BY EDGAR SPITZKE Have you ever heard of a bicycle coffee shop? Well, road-biking enthusiasts working at Southern Petroleum visited one and thought it would be a great shop for Somerset. So, heading the establishing of this new business, Chelsey Benker had the building in front of Southern Petroleum completely renovated and turned into a bicycle coffee shop called “Ugly mugz” and Southern Performance Center. You may have passed the building at 520 South Monticello Street and wondered what it was. This is a must place to visit, especially if you are a lover of specialty coffees (ala-Starbucks, but better). It is also an inviting place to visit with lots of table and lounging space to sit down, enjoy your coffee and the food they offer to go with it. Their hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. The Ugly Mugz part of the shop offers the standard hot coffee shop selections, Lattes, mochas, Americana, cappacino, espressos, etc. They have teas, iced coffees, even smoothies. For breakfast you can have a breakfast burrito with your specialty coffee. For other times you can have baked goods made fresh every morning such as muffins, bagels, cinnamon rolls, donuts, etc. For sandwiches, you can have Panini bread served hot with roasted chicken, smoked turkey, turkey bruschetta, roast beef, or veggies. Ugly Mugz actually has “ugly mugs” individual creations by a potter, Mehg, from Stearns. Along with the many innovations in the shop is a massage theraphy room and a “Pay it Forward Board” where paper notes can be put on a board specifying a person’s condition or situation and if yours is a match, you get whatever has been paid for in advance by other customers for free. I found one that fit me, for instance, “cancer survivor”. Usually the recipient of a free offering then pays forward for someone else and fills out a paper to put on the wall. While the coffee shop is managed by Amanda McAuliffe, the bicycle shop part is managed by Kevin McKinney. The shop offers “high-end” performance road bikes that can range from $499 to $10,000 and more. Names such as Pinarello (Italian) and Felt (American) are performance bikes used in competitions such as the Tour de France. Even so, this bicycle shop has performance bikes for every kind of usage. Often the shop orders parts, such as frames and other components and puts a bike together for a customer. In addition to offering full tune up and repair shop services, Southern Performance Center can custom fit the bike to you. The first in Kentucky to be certified as custom fitting bikes, they interview customers regarding their preferred usage, and adjust every adjustable component of the bike to one’s physical size needed saddle height, slant, distance to the peddles, etc.—15 or more points ,to make it perfect for you. According to McKinney, not having a bike custom fitted can actually hurt you physically over time. In addition to custom service the shop also has every kind of bike accessory you might need, from helmets and gloves and more. June 2014

Cruise BY EDGAR SPITZKE The season for Somernites Cruises has gotten off to a great start with record attendances at the Friday Night Block Party and over 1,200 show cars for the Show and Shine portion of the show in downtown Somerset on Saturday. With the gap for our copy press time and printing time, we are not able to report on the second cruise happening the weekend of May 22-24, but we can report on and anticipate the special activities scheduled for June 26-28. Activities for the June Somernites Cruise start with the “Tune Upâ€? on Thursday evening from 7 p.m. on to ?? at the new Steak and Shake on U.S. 27 at light 16B. This is a time to relax, swap tales of other cruises and enjoy the ice cream sodas and shakes. Friday, the regular “Meet and Greet/ Q97â€? is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. at Danny’s Rod Shop north of Somerset on U.S. 27 and hosted by Pepsi. The joint venture of Wal-Mart and the Somerset Mall as hosts have contributed to a greatly expanded and enjoyable Friday night event before the regular Somerset downtown Show and Shine. The Saturday Fun Run has been a popular regular feature of the Somernites Cruise. Starting at 8 a.m. participants can meet at Hardee’s South at light 22 for a free breakfast before going to the

London Drag Strip. You can race head on head with your friends. $10 gets you unlimited passes down the track and $10 lets you be a spectator at the site. The “Show and Shine cruise gates open at 1 p.m. to get participants a place to park in downtown Somerset. Well over 1,000 show cars will be expected for the June show. Chevelles have had a special place among owners and collectors from the modest 6 cylinder models to the 454 horsepower muscle cars. You will see many restored and customized models of these popular older cars at the show and shine. One of the greatest parts of the Somernites Cruise is that it is free to participants and visitors, which is not true of many classic car shows. The variety of activities around the cruise has contributed to its success and continued growth in popularity. There are group rates and a number of special rates, depending on whether or not you want them to supply a lunch for you when you arrive at the mine. You will want to visit their web site to see their whole listing of rates which include being able to ride in the cab of the engine or even a group caboose rental. A new ticket package is now offered that also combines the train ride with dinner and a show at Renfro Valley for groups of 10 or more. The train ride is in open cars for a full view of the scenic forest, hills, cliffs and streams. The route drops 600 feet from Stearns to the South Fork of the Cumberland River. The route travels along Roaring Paunch Creek with its many boulders and rapids. It also passes by the Barthel Mining Camp, a privately owned historic mining camp you can also visit while in the area. Once at the mine you can visit the

many “ghost” structures of the houses and buildings that were at the mining camp and listen to stories about each as told by recordings of persons who lived there. You can see the main entrance to the mine and cross the large coal tipple over the river and to the other side where several mine openings used to be. Musical entertainment is provided before the train trip and at the train station at the mine. There are many pictures and a diorama of the mining town to see at the station. One of the more unusual ways to take the trip to Blue Heron Mine via the railroad is to take it one way down to the river and then take a 5 mile canoe trip to Yamacraw Bridge where a shuttle will take you back to Stearns. 7KHUH DUH ¿YH VSHFLDO WUDLQ WKHPH rides this year, a Banjo Boogie Express, Ice Cream Social, Moonshine Limited, Trick or Treat for Tots, Haunted Ghost Train, and Santa Express. October runs treat riders to changing forest colors while the special runs in November treat riders to new vistas of cliff lines and rock formations after the leaves have fallen.. The McCreary County Heritage Foundation promotes the scenic railway excursions and other McCreary County features and events such as the Homecoming Celebration which will feature a Car and Truck Show, special activities at the Museum and a Fireworks display. To say the tremendous success of the Don Franklin dealership in Somerset is Heaven-sent would not be much of an exaggeration. “Business has exploded, and most of the credit goes to the Franklin family for their Christian beliefs and strong ethics. Eddie Franklin (son of Don) stresses the hiring of people who share his value system of always putting the customer first,” says Joe D. Cummins, general sales manager. “Good things come to people with strong faith, and we are thankful and blessed to be able to offer our customers a new facility that will be second to none in this part of the state,” adds Chris McWilliams, sales manager. It’s impossible not to notice work that has been done at the dealership on U.S. 27, across from Tradewind Shopping Center. Every inch of the property is being excavated and buildings demolished to make way for a state-of-the art facility that will see the number of vehicles offered for sale nearly doubled. The new building will include one of the largest retail showrooms in the area. Service space will also more than double and include 18 service bays with inground lifts. Four detail bays will be added; two service drives that will

28

allow for customers to remain in their vehicle while talking with the service manager; customer lounge with all the comforts of home, including Internet access; and play area for children. Upset with slow service when you go for an oil change? That won’t be happening at the all new Don Franklin Somerset facility. There will be two oil change lanes, and if work isn’t completed in 30 minutes or less, you don’t pay. One of the most popular features is likely to be an automatic on-site car wash with a free vacuum open to the public 24/7. “This is a major investment in the local economy and something that’s being done for the ease of use for our customers,” says Eddie Thompson, general manager. Don Franklin is the second largest dealer group in Kentucky, with locations all around Somerset. Many Somerset residents had been customers of Don Franklin for years, traveling to places like Columbia and Russell Springs before the local store opened. In just four years, brisk business at the Somerset location has earned the opportunity for it to be the crown jewel of all 12 dealerships. Plans call for the updating of one additional store each year. Employees of Don Franklin appreciate their employer’s stressing putting family in the forefront. “If you don’t see the vehicle you’re looking for, just ask,” says McWilliams, noting that Don Franklin has one of the largest variety of used vehicles in the state. The entire inventory can be seen by viewing the company’s Web site, www.donfranklinauto.com “We encourage potential customers to review the vehicles on the Web site and then contact their local dealer,” says Cummins. We, the Franklin family, look forward to many more years of serving our loyal and faithful customers. We invite you to just stop by and say “hello” any time.

Owned and operated by William and Angelique Guthrie, the beautiful lake view restaurant has become well known for tasty, satisfying American fare. With an extensive background in restaurants from Manhattan, New York, to sunny California, William and Angellique Guthrie, relocated from Colorado in 2006 to Jamestown, Kentucky, where they opened a small quaint restaurant called Guthrie’s Float House. When the new court house took their location, they moved across the square and opened a full service restaurant called Guthrie’s on the Square. In 2010 an opportunity presented itself to move to Burnside/Somerset. After months of remodeling and renovations, William and Angelique opened Guthrie’s River House. Since moving to their location in Burnside/Somerset, Guthrie’s has garnered a number of awards. The Pulaski Chamber of Commerce voted them Best New Business. The Commonwealtlh-Journal Reader Choice award has gone to Guthrie’s River House for four years in a row for Best Steaks and overall restaurant. They have also won Best Atmosphere and Best Restaurant and many other awards. 30

When we asked the Guthries what they attributed these successes to, bothWilliam and Angelique attributed these successes to their dedicated employees, along with quality food and fresh products. “We have some extremely talented guys in the kitchen that work together as a team to produce a quality product, “ William added. “Brian Roe and Nate Clark are our kitchen managers/chefs. They each bring a creative approach to our seasonal menus and daily chef creations. Drawing from their experience from Chicago to Charleston, South &DUROLQD WKH\ ZRUN WRJHWKHU WR EULQJ XQLTXH Ă€DYRU FRPELQDWLRQV WR Pulaski County.â€? Angelique commented, “Another key to our success is our service staff. Most of our servers have been with us for over two years and they offer friendly, attentive service and actually care about the overall dining experience of our guests. We often receive letters and e-mails raving about the service they received while dining at Guthrie’s. I’m extremely proud of how they work together as a team! In addition, I’m thrilled to have one of the Best bartenders in Pulaski County. Nate Warren is not only an excellent “mixologist,â€? but his attentive professionalism is what our many regulars appreciate most.â€? Angelique smiled as she commented on how blessed they are to have such wonderful people to work with. She continued, “Charles Wright is our General Manager. Being from South Central Kentucky, he brings a hometown charm along with his many years of experience to our restaurant. He has a friendly professionalism that is appreciated by our guests and our staff.â€? Guthrie’s has a beautiful view of Lake Cumberland. Mountain Biking

in the Lake Cumberland Area

Mike Wells shown here using the new mountain bikng and foot trail at Pulaski County Park.

34

If you are a mountain biker, you may be pleased to know that the Lake Cumberland area has one of the premier trails in Kentucky waiting for you. Mountain Bicycling is a sport that takes a lot of stamina and skill. We are not talking about motorized bikes (dirt bikes) or ATVs. We are talking about peddling a bike along trails that go up and down, have rough terrain through rocks and tree roots that cross the trail, may cross bridges, make sharp turns and have places where you could actually become air-borne. The London Forest Service Ranger District has a paper on Mountain Bicycling in their district. In it they say that “all of our hiking trails are open to mountain bicycles. However, many of them are not suitable for cyclists. Because the trails were designed for foot travel, they may present hazards and GLIÂżFXOW\ IRU PRXQWDLQ ELNLQJ 6WDLUV EULGJHV ERXOGHUV and steep switchbacks are examples of the obstacles you PD\ ÂżQG RQ RXU KLNLQJ WUDLOV 0DQ\ RI WKH WUDLOV ZLQG DORQJ cliffs and rock ledges. If you attempt these trails, exercise extreme caution.â€? Interviewing experienced mountain bikers, Mike Wells and his wife Cory, helped to better describe the mountain biking trails in Laurel and Pulaski Counties. Mike has biked trails in Montana, Idaho, Utah and Colorado and also the local trails in this area. His wife, Cory, has won the Kentucky State Games for Women Mountain Biking the last two years in a row. Mike was very impressed with the Eagle Scout Trail 6\VWHP LQ WKH 3XODVNL &RXQW\ 3DUN $V \RX ÂżUVW HQWHU WKH County Park, there is a trail head to the left and it is an 8-mile foot trail that takes you through the woods above the SDUN 0LNH VDLG WKDW DOWKRXJK WKLV WUDLO PLJKW KDYH EHHQ ÂżUVW FRQFHLYHG DV D IRRW WUDLO ZKRHYHU SXW WKH ÂżQLVKLQJ WRXFKHV on it, saw it as a mountain biking trail and made it just that. )RU PRXQWDLQ ELNHUV WKH WUDLO LV ÂłIDVW´ ³ÀRZLQJ´ HQRXJK to take you through its technical parts while still technical enough to keep experienced bikers interested. Mike said it ZDV DV LI D ÂłWUDLO ZKLVSHUHU´ SXW WKH ÂżQLVKLQJ WRXFKHV RQ it. The more you ride it, the more air you will catch. Trail sections you feel are not as clean as you would like will be better the next time you take it. Next time you take the trail the trail will be easier as you take the roots, the turns and the bridges. Great biking! And don’t forget the added attraction—the dip in the lake to cool off at the end of the trail (which is now easier with the lake level up). Ken Ford, local realtor and biking enthusiast, dittos Mike Well’s observations on the Pulaski County trail in the County Park. The park recently produced a map of the trail that we are including with this article, which, for mountain ELNHUV VKRZV WKUHH GLIIHUHQW GLIÂżFXOW\ OHYHOV EHJLQQHUV intermediate and advanced. It is an excellent map with much detail as to the many options on taking the trail and the obstacles that a biker will encounter and can prepare for. Stay & Play

Food with a

View BY EDGAR SPITZKE Eating out is a pleasure. Mom especially enjoys not having to cook. In the Lake Cumberland area, what is a pleasure now, is that you have so many choices. That didn’t use to be. In the 80’s, there were some fast food stops along U.S. 27, but only

one family type full-menu restaurant, Waitsboro Inn. (space now occupied by a branch bank). Waitsboro Inn, run by Johnny Tuttle, specialized in good steak dinners and a place where, in this dry county, you could “brown bag it” and enjoy a glass of wine with your meal. We now have enough choices that we can categorize them for what our guests might want. This “Eating Out” series will focus on “atmosphere”. Given the option to “eat out”, the determining factors will be quality of food, service, and, perhaps, “atmosphere”. While last on the list, we are going to approach DWPRVSKHUH ¿UVW 6LQFH /DNH &XPEHUODQG LV VXFK D EHDXWLIXO lake, why not look at lake views as a determining “atmosphere,” and in that, we have a good number of choices. In the Somerset area, if you want to dine with a lake view, you can choose Guthries River House. Some tables in-doors are on the lake side of the restaurant. But, many opt for outdoor dining as it seems any time you pass the restaurant the outdoor dining area is full. Guthries is located on South U.S. 27 within the Burnside City Limits. They have a full menu of steaks, chicken and seafood specializing in hand-cutted fresh meat entrees. Next we go to the Harbor Restaurant at Lee’s Ford Marina Resort. Located at the top of the hill from the dock, they have a stairway up to the restaurant, but also have free docking and a shuttle service for any guests coming off the lake up to the restaurant. An all-season restaurant, the Harbor has in door seating with a fantastic view of the harbor. But, they also offer outdoor dining below the main restaurant. The out door dining is in a shaded area which also offers lake views from some tables 37

on a large out-door deck. The Harbor also has a very large sports bar area with individual TV screens in their booths and you can order any of their meals to be served in their sports bar. We have enjoyed their lunch specials, especially their grouper and Reuben, corned beef and cabbage sandwiches. Grider Hill Resort Marina has a much overlooked restaurant which has a high up view of their marina, much like the Harbor Restaurant. With in-door and outside dining, the Grider Hill Restaurant offers full breakfast, dinner and supper menus with inside tables offering a lake view, and, of course, the outside dining giving you an open air, shaded place to view the lake and marina. Meals at the restaurant can be combined with musical entertainment afterward on the deck above the marina where crowds enjoy live entertainment on Saturday evenings throughout the summer. You can check out their webside, www/ griderhillmarinaresort.com. to see who is playing for any given weekend.

Guthrie’s River House

Wolf Creek Marina Not to be overlooked is the restaurant at Lake Cumberland Resort Park adjacent to Lure Lodge. The large windows give most tables, even those not next to a window, an expansive view of the lake from a very high location above the lake. The resort restaurant often features buffet

There are primitive but well landscaped campgrounds on both sides of the river. There is a boat ramp on the Laurel County side of the river. Trails lead to the thunderous rapids of the Rockcastle and also up to the top of Bee Rock. Plaques detail some of the interesting history of the area. This is a truly beautiful park to visit with enjoyable trails. Beaver Creek Wildlife Management Area and Wilderness is an 18,000 acre part of the Boone Forest located off South U.S. 27 at the Pulaski and McCreary County lines. A gravel forest service road takes you to a parking area and trailhead where you can take a loop trail to the Beaver Creek Overlook, perched high above the creek and giving you a beautiful view of the wilderness area and a nice easy walk through dense Hemlock groves and along impressive cliffs. This is a favorite destination for nature lovers who like to explore and enjoy solitude and adventure in a distinctly remote setting. Natural Arch Recreation Area is located off U.S. 27 and Kentucky Route

927. The main attraction, of course is the massive natural arch which can be seen from overlooks and reached by a trail that allows you to see the arch up close and be impressed with the underside of it. Nine miles of trails run through this truly scenic area There are two large picnic shelters for groups and a large outdoor amphitheater for public use. This is a must see. For camping in this part of the forest, there are two horse camping destinations, Barren Fork, right off U.S. 27 near Whitley City and behind the Stearns 5DQJHU 'LVWULFW RIÂżFH DQG %HOO )DUP Horse Camp along Ky. 1363. There is also a large campground at the end of Route 1363 called Great Meadow. It does not provide for horses, but a section of that campground is open all year. Again, these sites are primitive but extremely beautiful in a deep forest setting and DORQJ 5RFN &UHHN D SRSXODU WURXW ÂżVKLQJ stream. Not to be overlooked, for those who prefer a campsite near the water, Alum Ford, at the end of Rte 700 in McCreary

County, is a popular Forest Service primitive camping area. Several trails in this area are unique with waterfalls, a large natural arch and massive cliffs. The Sheltowee Trace Hiking trail starts in Tennessee and crosses through this campground. On the way to Great Meadow Campground you pass Hemlock Grove, a beautiful picnic area. If you want to enjoy the many trails and their overlooks in this part of the Boone Forest, a visit to the Stearns Ranger 'LVWULFW 2I¿FH QRUWK RI :KLWOH\ &LW\ LV recommended. There you can get up to date information and printouts detailing all the trails in their part of the forest. One caution: Black bears have returned to Kentucky and have expanded their territory which includes this part of the Boone Forest. They are not aggressive and rarely pose a threat to humans, but visitors should always use caution around black bears. Don’t feed the bears, dispose of litter and food trash properly and never approach a black bear, especially if she has cubs. Report bear sightings to the QHDUHVW )RUHVW 6HUYLFH 2I¿FH

The Landau is a truly luxurious pontoon boat with several styles that include “tri-toons” . The variety of models offered by Landau are their top of the line, Signature Cruise Series, then their Atlantis, Island Breeze and A’Lure Fishing Series. Depending on the series chosen, the boats can range from 18’ in length to 27’ with a standard 8 ½ ‘ width for all models. ports and Chrome light housings for navigation, marine coolers and fish wells, cup holders, tach, speedometer, fuel gauge and volt meter, tilt steering wheel and more and more. An especially neat option is a spacious pop-up dressing room for changing clothes. Depending on model and size of boat, engines can range from 60 hp to 250 hp. Asked why they chose the Landau brand of boat to handle and sell, Jim supplied a printout about the company stressing it as an independent family (not corporate) owned company that has been in the business of building Pontoon boats

since l974. Their only business is building luxury pontoon boats with the goal of setting up your boat for your individual needs and desires, from recreational boating to serious fishing. Interestingly, the sales brochure for Landau Pontoon Boats picture them with Suzuki engines. Idle Time Marine is the only Suzuki Engine dealer and service representative in the Lake Cumberland area. Why Suzuki? Frankly because Suzuki is a motor company, not a boat company or anything else. For years they have been building motors for marine, auto, motorcycle and ATV markets with a commitment to 4-stroke technology that has never wavered. They have succeeded in having the industry’s largest all-4-stroke lineup from their mini-light 2.5 horsepower portable, right up

to their new flagship 4-liter 300-horsepower V6 engine. With a 4-stroke engine you burn regular gas without having an oil-gas mixture, resulting in not polluting the water with oil, cleaner burning and better gas mileage, quieter engines, etc., etc., etc. Idle Time Marine can offer the Fishing model of the Landau boat at entry level price of $18,500, total with boat, motor and trailer, that is, a 19’ boat with a 60 hp engine and trailer complete. They have ordered a number of boats for stock with additional options such as mooring cover, additional cleats for anchor and moorage, upgraded chrome housings for lights and upgraded vinyl flooring rather than carpeting (which gets wet, holds moisture and mold and deteriorates quickly). They can offer an entry level Island Breeze Cruiser Series boat at 20’ in length for $23,900 with a 90 hp motor. They can offer an entry level Atlantis Cruiser Series with split rear loung and in a tritoon, 23’ in length for $34,900 with a Suzuki 115 hp engine. When you visit Idle Time Marine, you can buy “off the floor” or order your boat and seating configuration as you might like it. Financing can also be arranged. Idle Time Marine is ready to help you buy or select the boat of your dreams with a quality Landau Pontoon or Tri-toon and powerful and efficient Suzuki Motor. Before you buy anything else, visit Idle Time Marine and consider all your options. Jim and Jennifer Quillen will be there to assist you.
