WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY! As we move closer to the State Theatre’s 100th anniversary, we find ourselves looking back into the past. With the help of the New Brunswick Public Library, we have been diving deep into decades of archives, specifically the 1920s to the 1960s. Thanks to the library’s archives, we have been able to piece together years of information (including some fun ads, see above and below). Most recently, we came across an article on one of the State Theatre’s renovations. Printed in the Home News Tribune on Sunday, May 27, 1962, the caption for the photo above reads “An elegant silk curtain sets the tone for the interior decorations in the elaborately renovated RKO State Theatre. The comfortable seats in the orchestra are of gold and tan.” The article goes on to say that this was the State Theatre’s first extensive renovation project since 1939. It also says that the entire theater was repainted in red, sandalwood, and black tones and that a 12-armed brass chandelier was added to the lobby. Well folks, long gone is that chandelier and the gold silk curtain, but it reminds us just how special this place was and continues to be. We look forward to sharing more historic findings with you in the future. For more State Theatre history, watch PBS’s Treasures of New Jersey: State Theatre New Jersey at STNJ.org/history

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear Friends, Unquestionably the arts—whether music, dance, theater, or poetry— play an important role in shaping lives on all levels. It is because of donations from friends like you that State Theatre New Jersey is able to offer opportunities for learning and discovery within our own neighborhood and beyond the borders of Middlesex County. Thanks to donations, State Theatre New Jersey’s education and outreach programs have grown to serve over 35,000 people of all demographics with more than 160 events per year. We offer the community the opportunity to connect with the performing arts in a variety of ways, including performances, workshops, in-school programs, and artist residencies. Serving schools, social service agencies, and over 40 nonprofits, our programs encompass art forms from a broad range of eras and traditions, designed to foster an understanding and appreciation of live performing arts. Membership donations support our education and outreach programs, provided at greatly subsidized prices or completely free of charge. Support the power of live performing arts by investing in State Theatre with a donation today! The direct impact of your gift is felt by the children who excitedly attend our Performances for Schools, families with members on the autism-spectrum enjoying our Sensory-Friendly Performances, veterans appreciating a night out, and individuals of all demographics from our community. Through your confidence in State Theatre New Jersey, our work is made possible and our mission is sustained. Plus, you’ll receive great benefits all year long! (Philia), The Addams Family, and The Music Man. “Special thanks to Tara Rubin Casting and Bloc! So much love to my fiancé, my family, and God!” For your daily dose of magic @dreamweaver90210 MARSHALL BRICKMAN (Book). Films (author or co-author): Sleeper, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Manhattan Murder Mystery, For the Boys, Intersection; (as writer/ director): Simon, Lovesick, The Manhattan Project, Sister Mary Explains It All. Television: The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (head writer), The Dick Cavett Show (head writer/ co-producer). He has been published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy, and other periodicals and was the 2006 recipient of the Writers Guild of America’s Ian McClellan Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award. Jersey Boys, his first venture into musical theatre (with co-author Rick Elice), won four Tony® Awards including Best Musical. The Addams Family, his second theatrical venture (also with Elice), ran over 700 performances on Broadway and had national and international tours. Upcoming projects include musicals about Roy Rogers and the Woodstock Festival of 1969. RICK ELICE (Book) co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony® Award, 2007 Grammy® Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with the great Marshall Brickman. His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, received nine 2012 Tony® Award nominations (including two for Rick), won five (more than any play of the season), and is one of the most produced plays in North America. Also on Broadway, Elice wrote The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa), which also had productions on tour across North America and in Europe and South America. Getting ready for Broadway in the fall of 2018, The Cher Show, directed by Jason Moore. Heartfelt thanks to those whose work in the theater makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, David, Strong, Gaudio, Valli, McAnuff, Trujillo, Seller, Suarez, Moore, Gattelli, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers, and,

eternally, Roger Rees. Elice thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now. BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of The Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy® nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and the soundtrack for the film of Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence Is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for The Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership...on a handshake. BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writer-producers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957, they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie”—all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo 21

turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesley Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film Barbarella. Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with “Music to Watch Girls By.” In 1972 Crewe was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. They also co-wrote Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” (#1, July ’75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June ’01)...David Ritz DES MCANUFF (Director) is a twotime Tony® Award-winning director and former artistic director of Canada’s Stratford Festival. He is also Director Emeritus of La Jolla Playhouse, where as Artistic Director he staged over 30 productions of classics, new plays and musicals. He’s co-founder of Broadway’s Dodgers. Broadway: Ain’t Too Proud, Summer, Doctor Zhivago, Jesus Christ Superstar, Guys and Dolls, Aaron Sorkin’s The Farnsworth Invention, Jersey Boys (Tony® and Olivier Awards: Best Musical), Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays (Tony® Award: Best Special Theatrical Event), Dracula the Musical, How to Succeed…, The Who’s Tommy (Tony® and Olivier Awards: Best Director), A Walk in the Woods, Big River (Tony® Awards: Best Director, Best Musical). BÉLA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES

ABOUT BÉLA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES

32

Groundbreaking, Grammy®-winning quartet Béla Fleck & The Flecktones are celebrating its 30th anniversary with a North American tour. Banjoist Béla Fleck, harmonica and keyboardist Howard Levy, bassist Victor Wooten and percussionist/drumitarist Roy “Future Man” Wooten have been creating some of the most forward-thinking music during their long, storied career. While all manners of genres come into play—from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances—the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all their own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. Simply put, it is The Flecktones: music made only when these four individuals come together. “All the different things I do come together to make a new ‘hybrid’ Béla’,” Fleck says. “Everybody else in the group is doing the same things, collaborating with different people, and pursuing a wide variety of ideas, so when we come together and put all of our separate soups into one big stockpot it turns into a very diverse concoction.” Fleck first united the Flecktones in 1988, ostensibly for a single performance on PBS’ Lonesome Pine Special. From the start, there was a special kinship between the four musicians, a bond forged in a mutual passion for creativity and artistic advancement. Three breakthrough albums and a whole lot of live dates followed before Levy decided to move on in late 1992. Each member had been quite busy with a variety of successful projects—including: Bela’s duet collaborations with Chick Corea, a trio with Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer (sometimes with the Detroit Symphony) and his expansive adventures in African music, documented in the acclaimed 2009 film and CD, Throw Down Your Heart. Wooten’s solo band tours, camps, recording sessions, clinics and CD releases (including an incredible collaborative project with Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller called SMV, which yielded the album Thunder),

and Future Man’s creation of his amazing Black Mozart project, and continued development of new instruments. Still, all agree that Flecktones music was beckoning them home. The band, which had always maintained a warm relationship with the gifted pianist/harmonica player, recruited Levy for a 2009 tour of the US and Europe, an experience he describes as “extremely invigorating and very energizing.” “It felt just like it did back when we first started playing together,” says Wooten. “Just with a lot less hair.” Upon the tour’s conclusion, the four musicians agreed to further explore the band’s possibilities, sensing what Future Man calls, “an opportunity to revisit the original scene of the crime.” “There were a lot of unfinished aspects to this line-up of the band,” Fleck notes, “in that it stopped right when we were peaking creatively.” For Fleck, Levy’s return enables the Flecktones to follow through on the original concept of a band “where each person was reinventing their instruments, where every one of us was a kind of mutant.” For many Flecktones fans, the return of the original line-up allows a chance to see a band that many had never gotten to witness before. Visionary and vibrant as anything in their already rich canon, Rocket Science feels more like a new beginning than simply the culmination of an early chapter. Where the band goes from here remains undetermined, but all four members agree that the promise of Béla Fleck & the Original Flecktones has yet to be fulfilled. “We’re going to have to have this experience together and see how everybody likes it,” Fleck says. “I know that we haven’t even come close to exhausting the possibilities with this record, but we sure went deeper than we ever had before.”

NUTCRACKER

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORS Dear Friends, Welcome to American Repertory Ballet’s Nutcracker! We hope to take you on a magical journey as our Company members and Princeton Ballet School students dance through fantastical lands of snow and sweets, guided by Tchaikovsky’s iconic score. Since 1964, our production has been a celebration of community and youthful imagination. It brings families together during the holiday season while serving as a rite of passage for generations of dancers. Nutcracker reflects ARB’s commitment to partnership, and we are grateful to the many artists and arts organizations that add inspiring and artistic layers to our production and perform with us at venues statewide. We also appreciate our many sponsors and contributors that support us year after year, making our art possible. As many of you know, American Repertory Ballet is a founding resident company of the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. Our New Brunswick classes are now held at this new state-of-the-art facility, in addition to having our locations in Princeton and Cranbury. We are honored to be part of this historic new arts center and hope you will join us for classes, community events, and professional performances in this spectacular new space! ABOUT AMERICAN REPERTORY BALLET American Repertory Ballet’s (ARB) mission is to bring the joy, beauty, artistry and discipline of classical and contemporary dance to New Jersey and nationwide audiences and to dance students through artistic and educational programs. The organization comprises: the preeminent professional classical and contemporary ballet company in the state; Princeton Ballet School, one of the largest and most respected non-profit dance schools in the nation; and ARB’s Access & Enrichment initiatives, including the acclaimed DANCE POWER program, the longest continuously running community and arts partnership in New Jersey. ARB is committed to presenting classical and contemporary ballets from the 19th and 20th centuries alongside new and existing works by choreographers from today. Founded in 1963, ARB’s rich history of repertory includes works by leading choreographers such as George Balanchine, Alvin Ailey, José Limón, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, and many others. ARB has been consistently designated a “Major Arts Institution” by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for the past two decades, and has repeatedly been awarded a Citation of Excellence by the Council. ARB was voted the Jersey Arts People’s Choice for “Favorite Dance Company” in 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2015-2018. Princeton Ballet School has gained a

national reputation for its excellent dance training since its founding in 1954 by Audrée Estey. Under the direction of Aydmara Cabrera, the school currently serves approximately 1,000 students, starting at age three, and includes a large open enrollment division for adults. Princeton Ballet School has studios in Cranbury, New Brunswick and Princeton and offers classes in ballet, modern dance, jazz, hip-hop, CardioBallet and CoMBo (Conditioning for the Mind and Body). Students have gone on to dance in professional ballet and contemporary dance companies around the world, including New York City Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Miami City Ballet, Complexions, Mark Morris Dance Company, Twyla Tharp, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Ballet West and on Broadway. The Access & Enrichment wing of ARB reaches into the community through its DANCE POWER program, signature On Pointe lecture series, and with free programming, master classes, residencies, lecture demonstrations and School-Time Matinees. In 1986, ARB partnered with the New Brunswick Board of Education to create DANCE POWER. Today, it’s the longest-running uninterrupted arts/community partnership in New Jersey. The legendary Gregory Hines was DANCE POWER’s Honorary Chair for 18 years before his untimely passing in 2003. In 2001, Hines endowed a scholarship at Rutgers University that earmarks annual funds for a DANCE POWER student to attend the university. ABOUT THE SHOW ACT I | The Party The scene opens with the annual Christmas Eve Tree Lighting party at the home of the Silverhaus’. Clara and Fritz anxiously wait outside the parlor for the tree lighting, when to Clara’s horror and Fritz’s delight, the maid enters the hall, chasing a mouse from the pantry. Father calls the children in, and the tree is lighted. As guests arrive, we are introduced to the Elegant Family, the Widow, her daughter, the Dapper Gent, and the Big Family with their nine children. After a festive dance performed by the children, the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer and his Nephew arrive. Drosselmeyer reveals wonderful mechanical dolls, and then presents his favorite niece, Clara, with a beautifully carved Nutcracker. As all of the children watch Drosselmeyer’s demonstration of the Nutcracker, Fritz becomes jealous and grabs the gift from Clara. In his flight, he drops and breaks it. Drosselmeyer bandages the Nutcracker and gives it to Clara. The party winds down, the guests depart and the Silverhaus family goes to bed. The Battle Unable to sleep, Clara sneaks downstairs to visit her Nutcracker. As she dances in the parlor with the Nutcracker, the shadows and the movement of little mice disturb her delight. Drosselmeyer appears and casts her into a dream world, transforming the parlor into a battleground between an army of soldiers and rats.

Clara is amazed by the transformation of the parlor as the now life-size Nutcracker and his army of soldiers defend the Christmas tree from the minions of the Rat King and mice. As the fortune of the battle turns, Clara defends her beloved Nutcracker by throwing her shoe at the Rat King—vanquishing him and his awful troop. Land of Snow Drosselmeyer reappears and transforms the wounded Nutcracker into the Nutcracker Prince who will accompany Clara on an enchanted journey. The parlor is magically transformed into the Land of Snow, and Angels float onto the scene. Clara and the Prince meet the beautiful Snow Queen and King and are dazzled by whirlwinds of Snowflakes. ACT II | Land of Sweets Clara and the Nutcracker Prince make their way to the Land of Sweets and are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Prince tells the story of the great battle for the Christmas tree and how Clara saved the day by thwarting the Rat King and securing victory. As a reward for her heroism, the Sugar Plum Fairy presents dances from different lands including Chocolate from Spain, Coffee from Arabia, Tea from China, Candy Canes from Russia, Marzipan from Germany, and a wonderfully playful meeting of Mother Ginger and her many children. This is followed by a fragrant bouquet of Flowers and the tour de force pas de deux by the Sugar Plum and her Cavalier. After the grand finale, a very happy but tired Clara is returned home to the comfort of the family parlor and wakes from her wonderful journey.
