COPS IN CRISIS

Crime hike ‘no surprise’ The police association has called for a boost in officers – not more taskforces – as Melton’s crime rate soared more than 17 per cent in a year. Melton’s police services area recorded the second-highest increase in crime across the west in the 12 months to April 1, the latest Crime Statistics Agency figures, released last Thursday, reveal. The biggest jump was for breaches of court orders (by 45 per cent), followed by dangerous and negligent acts endangering people (28 per cent); weapons offences, including knives, and explosive devices (24 per cent); theft (20 per cent); assault (16 per cent); and burglaries (15 per cent). Meanwhile, domestic violence incidents in Melton increased by nine per cent to 2063. Of the 24 categories of crime, all but abduction, blackmail and property-related offences have soared since 2012. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said while the crime rises were disappointing, they were not unexpected. “When the population grows rapidly and police numbers in stations fall, then of course crime will rise,” Mr Iddles said. “We can say reporting is up, or try to argue that somehow this report means we are doing things better, but, at the end of the day, the community should judge policing by the amount of crime that is prevented, not committed. “To do anything else is ignoring that for every crime recorded there is a victim.” Responding to the latest findings, Police Minister Lisa Neville said taskforces were investigating thefts and aggravated burglary to “smash gangs and target violent crime”. Ms Neville said the state government had funded new police intelligence systems, mobile technology and body cameras to “deliver a modern and responsive police force”. But Mr Iddles slammed the state government, describing the current policing model as “broken” so that it was responding to crime rather than preventing it. “[Thursday’s] crime statistics prove that the

creation of taskforce after taskforce will not make Victoria safer,” Mr Iddles said. “The use of technology alone will not fix these problems. “There is a distinct lack of police on our streets, and without police working closely with, and in, our local communities, all of these technology enhancements will be of little value.”

But in a statement, Ms Neville said the statistics “clearly” showed Victoria Police was targeting crime more effectively. She said police were making more arrests and charging more offenders. “We face a number of complex law and order challenges,” Ms Neville said.

“The scourge of family violence, the need to crack down on gangs and gun crime … which is why this government continues to give Victoria Police the people, technology and infrastructure they need to keep our community safe, now and well into the future.” Melton police was contacted for comment.

Global storage giant sets up in Melbourne’s west A Dutch-based cold storage and logistics company is setting up at Truganina. Construction has started on the $100 million NewCold automated cold storage warehouse, which will also be the company’s Asia-Pacific headquarters. The company will employ 127 full-time staff once the warehouse, on the corner of Robinsons and Middle roads, opens. The company will be the anchor tenant for the Agar industrial estate. NewCold’s Oceania director Ray Perry told Star Weekly a second facility at Truganina was

also on the cards, with the company recently lodging a planning application for another cold storage building on an adjoining site. NewCold operates four other facilities worldwide: in the UK, Germany, Poland and France. The Truganina facility is due to open in the next 12 months. “We were considering going further east, but the traffic isn’t great and we want to provide second-to-none delivery – we don’t want to be trapped in the middle of Melbourne,” Mr Perry said. “Also, we needed the space and there’s not many places that offer that in Melbourne.

There’s an awful lot of demand in Australia for quality food storage and distribution.” State Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said the project was part of a state government plan to attract investments that create jobs across Melbourne. Charlene Macaulay

Jump ball for teen’s cancer fight By Esther Lauaki A young Bacchus Marsh basketballer fighting cancer will have a tournament played in his honour next month. Braedan Killender-Brennan, who played for the Lightning under-18s team in the Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association, was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. The 16 year-old’s teammates banded together to organise the Braedan’s Three Versus Three fundraising tournament for July 10. “I’ve been playing basketball since I was six in Melton, then moved out to Bacchus Marsh and started playing for the Lightning,” Braedan said. “Since my diagnosis, every day has its ups and downs but I still play when I can.

“It’s overwhelming and unexpected to have a tournament played for me.” Teammates Brodie Coots-Najer and Nicholas Hibberd said they wanted to do something to help Braedan and his family. “We have all played together for a long time,” Brodie said. “Recently, we played in a fundraising tournament and when we found out about Braedon’s diagnosis we asked management if we could host a tournament ourselves.” Association president Paul Wilson said Braeden’s diagnosis resonated throughout the basketball community. “This was an extremely sad and very unfortunate occurrence, and especially so for Braedan’s parents, family and those closest to him,” he said. Mr Wilson said the committee had been working for the past six weeks to ensure the event was full of fun, entertainment and quality basketball.

SES short of volunteers By Ben Cameron Melton’s State Emergency Service unit is the most undermanned in Melbourne’s north-west. With 20 active volunteers serving a population of more than 130,000, the unit has marginally less capacity per head of population than Wyndham (35 volunteers), Whittlesea (44) and Brimbank (55). Melton SES spokesman Karl Sass said local recruiting drives had fallen by the wayside in recent years – a vicious cycle caused in part by the volunteer shortage.

“Melton is a fast-growing area and we have lots of challenges keeping our numbers up with population growth,” Mr Sass said. “Like all volunteer emergency services, we’re facing challenges … Melton is no different. Over the past year or two, the lack of volunteers has meant less focus on public awareness and recruitment. We’re working on fixing that.” Brimbank unit controller Claudelle Dalgleish said SES units could not rely on fundraising alone for big-ticket items such as replacement of trucks, which cost more than $100,000. Brimbank SES has been wanting to buy land

for a new station, possibly in Ardeer, Albion or Sunshine West, but Ms Dalgleish said she feared this was a pipe dream. “This fundraising takes years and, in the case of land for a satellite location, it may never be a reality,” she said. “Zoning and property sizes also become an issue for emergency service vehicles and parking for volunteers.” Brimbank council has been in discussions with the unit for a potential second station, and the council provides its Keilor Park centre rent-free.

A couple truly in tune Bacchus Marsh musicians Katie and Riley Beech are going to great lengths to get their quirky swing-folk music out into the world. The duet, whose band is called The Old Married Couple, say they will be pouring all their savings, earnings from shows and busking as well as “selling naughty pictures of our ankles and doing whatever else it takes” to get to Portland, Oregon, to record their debut album. They recently launched an online Pozible crowdfunding campaign to help get them closer to their $21,000 goal. The Beechs, who have been married two years but together for 12, moved to Bacchus Marsh from Sydney after they fell in love with the Melbourne music scene. “Inspiration and opportunity are vital to us as creators – and regional Victoria, as well as the beautiful town of Bacchus Marsh, provided

that for us,” Katie says. They will link up with Portland music producer Adam Selzer, who has worked with Darren Hanlon and The Decemberists. “Mid-argument, a friend told us that we were just like an old married couple,” Riley said. “That immediately ended the argument when I stopped and thought, what a great name for a band. Occasionally, it causes some confusion because we’re quite young. We figure that, in order to keep the irony going, we’ll change our name to The Newlyweds when we hit 60. “The goal is to be full-time and able to bring smiles to faces and taps to toes around the world.” The Old Married Couple will play in Bacchus Marsh at The Vintage Loft on June 24 and at Little Lucky on July 31. Murder victim’s mum fights on Sarah Cafferkey, 22, would light up any room she walked into. She loved to dance, had a “bubbly personality” and was studying social justice. But her life was cut short when Steven James Hunter, a convicted murderer with a raging drug habit, brutally murdered the Bacchus Marsh woman and dumped her body in a wheelie bin in November, 2012. A life was cut short and a community let down because of systemic failures, Sarah’s mother Noelle Dickson told Star Weekly. Ms Dickson has joined the families of four other murder victims – Raechel Betts, Joanne Wicking, Evan Rudd and Douglas Phillips – and the victims of two sex attacks to sue the state of Victoria for negligence and breaching its duty of care to them. The crimes involved were committed by offenders on parole or under supervision orders. “How can this keep happening?” Ms Dickson asked. “For me, I want changes made – I want changes to protect the community. That’s my main reason for launching this legal action.” She said that since Sarah’s death there had been several reviews into Victoria’s justice system, and there had been more murders committed by offenders on parole. “All the reviews are saying there are faults … the state government are saying they’ve introduced these new laws, but if the workers aren’t following through, and if there are lots of faults with communication between authorities, that’s not good enough.”

Red-y to have fun

Ms Dickson believes case workers should be required to report everything “whether they think it’s relevant or not”. She said that in Sarah’s case, some of the things the caseworkers thought were not relevant went unreported. “That’s not good enough – it’s not what we expect, it’s not what the community expects,” she said.

Ms Dickson said she would continue to seek justice for her murdered daughter. “I just feel like I need to do this for Sarah,” she said. Shine Lawyers social justice solicitor Paula Shelton, who is running the parolee crimes actions, said she was confident the state government would be “compassionate” and “proactive” in resolving the cases. “Our clients have lost family members or been injured as a result of a failed corrections system,” Ms Shelton said. “Their lives have been profoundly affected and they do not want other families to go through what they have had to suffer. “Most of our clients have suffered injuries, including post-traumatic stress disorders, depression and anxiety … these conditions have significantly impacted on the quality of their lives.”

Bacchus Marsh fresh food farmers, Tripod, recalled 30 of its loose leaf salad products because of salmonella contamination in February. One world, many stories It takes courage to flee persecution and seek refuge in another country, the Refugee Council of Australia reminds us. And this year’s Refugee Week theme – with courage let us all combine – is borrowed from the Australian national anthem to celebrate the courage of refugees and call for unity. Events will be held across the country, with Melton council, in partnership with the Melton Interfaith Network, hosting its celebration on Wednesday. Guest speakers include author Abdi Adem [Shining: The Story of a Lucky Man], former Syrian refugee Samia Khochaba, and Iranian asylum seeker Mahshid Babzartabi, who will help shed light on issues that affect refugees and asylum seekers, while celebrating their

positive contributions. There will also be cultural performances. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said it was important for residents to understand the experiences of refugees. “We hope [to] help bring better understanding between members of our community, and create an environment where refugees can live in safety and make a valuable contribution to our community,” Cr Majdlik said. The celebrations will run from noon until 1.30pm, on Wednesday, June 22 at the Melton community hall, 232 High Street. For more information, or to RSVP, call 9747 7200. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Boom lowered on river oil slick By Sumeyya Ilanbey Investigations are continuing in an attempt to identify the source of several oil spills into the Werribee River at Bacchus Marsh. Environment Protection Authority officers have inspected the river three times over the past month following reports of floating oil. EPA regional services executive director Damian Wells said at their first visit on Tuesday, May 10, officers observed an oily discharge entering the river from a stormwater drain. “During this inspection, we were unable to trace the pollutant to a source,” Mr Wells said.

“However, Melbourne Water deployed a boom, which is still in place today, to contain and absorb the spill and stop it travelling further downstream.” In the latest incident, last Wednesday, EPA officers found a “small amount of pollution” entering the river from the same drain, but again the source could not be traced. Melbourne Water officers also attended and deployed a second boom closer to the drain to help absorb the substance. “The intermittent nature of the discharge and the large, complex stormwater system is making it difficult to identify the source,” Mr Wells said.

“EPA will continue to work with Melbourne Water and council to identify the source of the pollution and stop it entering the river. He said the EPA advised people to avoid contact with any water that had a visible sheen. Ben Courtice, a Bacchus Marsh member of Friends of the Werribee River, said the oil spill smelled strongly, similar to diesel or old industrial oil, and stretched for about 500 metres along the water. “I saw a swamp wallaby near the river this morning [Wednesday] and there are several waterbird species along there,” Mr Courtice said. “It’s frustrating because we don’t know what

the oil is. It could be dangerous solvents, could be diesel. “The friends group have been putting a lot of effort into revegetating the creek bed and we don’t know how much it’s been damaged as a result.” Mr Wells urged people to report pollution to EPA as soon as they see it by calling 1300 372 842 or via the EPA website. “Prompt reporting increases our ability to identify a source, remedy the problem and minimise any environmental harm,” he said Penalties apply to companies and individuals polluting waterways.

Fireys reject the ‘hype’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton firefighters are sticking together despite the bitter CFA row engulfing the state government and the “media hype” surrounding it. Volunteer and paid firefighters in the Melton brigade say they won’t be distracted, while the “period of unrest” has united the brigade, according to operations officer Jayson Hirt. “The current media coverage is not beneficial to anyone in our brigade or the community,” he said. “It has been blown out of proportion and doesn’t reflect the real situation. “It gives me pride to say that the membership at Melton has not been distracted by the current media hype … it has, in many ways, united our brigade.” The bitter CFA dispute has intensified in recent weeks, with the resignation of Jane Garrett as emergency services minister and the sacking of the CFA board. Last Friday, chief executive Lucinda Nolan resigned and a new board was appointed by the state government. The board appointed health sector executive Frances Diver as its chief executive. Ms Diver, who worked for more than a decade in what is now the Department of Health and Human Services, takes up her new role on June 27. Chief fire officer Joe Buffone will act as CFA chief executive until then. “The relationship between our volunteer and career firefighters has never wavered,” Mr Hirt said. “I take great pride in how strongly united our volunteer and career firefighters have remained throughout this. “Melton residents should also take comfort in knowing that our team continues to deliver a great fire service to the community.”

The Melton station is manned by a mix of paid and volunteer firefighters, with at least five paid firefighters on shift at any time and about 80 volunteers who carry pagers and respond when available. The head of volunteer firefighters at the station, 5th lieutenant Simon Vamplew, says he’s “frustrated” and “disappointed” with

being “used” as a political football and getting caught up in a media frenzy. “As soon as [the dispute] came out in the media, we sat with our staff and asked what’s going on?” Mr Vamplew says. “And they were really good. They got the EBA [enterprise bargaining agreement], they answered every question and they were open and honest.”

Rowsley loop to cut delays Moorabool commuters are set for faster, more frequent train services in and out of Rowsley. The newly upgraded Rowsley crossing loop will start operating this month and allow shorter travel times between existing loops at Parwan and Bank Box. Construction of the loop is part of the state government’s $518 million investment to upgrade the Ballarat line. It duplicates a one-kilometre section of track, allowing trains to overtake one another. The project includes critical safety improvements to Rowsley Station Road rail crossing and new warning lights and boom gates. An extra 40 carpark spaces were added at Ballan station in December, 2014 as part of the project’s first stage. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the crossing loop would mean a more reliable service for Ballarat line passengers, enabling trains to make up time from unexpected delays. “The state government’s plan to fix the Ballarat line and deliver more frequent and reliable services is showing positive results.” Buninyong MP Geoff Howard said completion of the loop was good news after a difficult few months. “The Rowsley Station Road level crossing is safer for motorists now that boom gates are in place,” he said. “The service will be more reliable now that work on the loop is complete.” Esther Lauaki

Mayor’s Message Cr Kathy Majdlik à ™Š ”‰”¨Â•Â”—Š Â’¤Â‹¨ÂˆÂŽÂ‰Â™ÂŞÂŠ ‘Š ¤Â”‰‰’‡Š Councillors and I have the privilege of supporting the great things our community has to offer; from outstanding sporting facilities and vibrant retail precincts, to our unique environmental pockets. We’re also privy to seeing the great work local service groups and organisations do to support those members of our community experiencing hardship. At Council, we do what we can to help residents experiencing struggles by providing access to grants, and delivering a range of quality services. This year, however, it’s my singular privilege and pleasure to help raise funds for local groups and volunteer organisations through the introduction of the Mayoral Charitable Fund. All funds raised by the Mayoral Charitable Fund will go to the local groups that make a huge difference to the lives of many local residents. So, I’m appealing to the generous nature of our residents, clubs and businesses to consider donating to the Mayoral Charitable Fund, and help us build a supportive ¨Â’§ÂŒÂˆÂ•Â‘Šà ‰‰Š¤§ÂŒÂ—Â™ÂŠÂ˜ÂŽÂˆÂ™Â”Â—ÂŞÂŠÂˆÂŒ¨Â‰§Â—ˆŒŠÂŠÂŽÂŠÂ™ÂˆŠÂŒÂˆÂ‹¨ÂŽÂŒÂ•ÂŠ¨Â’Œ•˜ˆ§Â•ÂˆÂ’ŒŠ from Council, will be donated to a range of community groups and services operating within the municipality. To donate, please email mayoralcharitablefund@melton.vic.gov.au I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winners of the 2016 Melton Business Excellence Awards, held last Friday at Tabcorp Park. Call to shed bad habits Melton blokes got chatting about their health and what they should be doing to look after it last week. As part of Men’s Health Week, the doors of Melton’s Men’s Shed were thrown open with a meal served and DVDs played encouraging the visitors to have annual check-ups with their doctor to help identify health issues early. Australian Men’s Shed Association chief executive David Helmers said there was “still a long way to go” to improve the health of Aussie men.

“Five men die every hour in Australia from preventable causes and almost five die by suicide every day,” Mr Helmers said. “In the lead-up to this year’s election, it’s time for government to take firm action to address these issues and commit to funding men’s health programs.” For more information about men’s health and sheds, visit www.malehealth.org.au or mensshed.org Sumeyya Ilanbey

Moorabool council is urging the federal government to rethink its decision not to fund upgrades to the Bacchus Marsh irrigation district. Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford criticised Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce’s decision not to include Bacchus Marsh and Werribee market gardeners in a $45 million Victorian water upgrade package announced earlier this month. “Council is disappointed the Bacchus Marsh irrigation district (BMID) modernisation project – and the broader Werribee district – has been overlooked by the [federal] government’s announcement,” Mr Croxford said. “The state government, in its 2016-17 budget, provided $4.5 million, matched by a similar amount from Southern Rural Water, to progress stage one of the Bacchus Marsh upgrade.” He said the upgrade could not proceed without a matching contribution by the federal government from its $45 million package. “Agricultural production on the Bacchus Marsh river flats generates about $190 million a year,” he said. “That could grow to $240 million if increased security of water supply and efficiency of the irrigation district is improved. About 580 people are employed in the sector in Bacchus Marsh, and Werribee is an even larger district. We urge minister Joyce to include the BMID as a priority.” Esther Lauaki

MY PLACE

(Shawn Smits)

Caroline Springs resident Ruby Anriquez-Acevedo spent weeks working on a project to be exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria last month. The 22-year-old tells Sumeyya Ilanbey all her hard work paid off …

What’s your connection to the area? I moved out from Sunshine about 15 years ago. We lived with my grandma, and when the time was right we moved over to Caroline Springs.

restaurants. And there’s more than one place to go to. What would you change if you could?

Where’s your favourite place to hang out?

I don’t know, to be honest. Maybe an upgrade to the roads, a bit more lighting in a couple of streets. Maybe a police station that’s open 24 hours so, if anything were to happen, I wouldn’t have to wait for police from Melton or Sunshine to come down.

I do like the park, and the town centre’s pretty good – you’ve got a variety of cafes and

Can you tell me a little bit about your exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria?

What do you like about Caroline Springs? Everyone is friendly and the parks are beautiful.

We worked as a team [with other Kangan Institute visual merchandising students]. We did what we had to – we stayed back after school hours to make sure it was done. The theme was Alice in Wonderland-crossmental asylum … We had this massive chandelier tree and we had IV drip bags coming down from them. We had blue string lights attached to the chandeliers, and they were covered in medical supplies and old toys – stuff you’d see in an old asylum. I really enjoyed getting behind the scenes,

going early in the mornings, the public viewing. Then going back there to bring it all down at the end. Where do you get your inspiration from? When I get the brief, I think about what could go really well, what is it that the client would like. I like a lot of simple and modern things. So I do go to Pinterest for ideas – and often look at magazines and have a peek there. Anything can give you inspiration.

Stress less, the best advice is in town to stay For the past three years, a team from Adviceline Injury Lawyers has worked from a ‘visiting’ office at Melton, helping people pursue – and win – personal injury compensation claims.

The practice works on a no win-no fee structure and represents all sections of the community, including people who find it hard to afford a lawyer.

Now, in line with its strategy to provide exceptional legal advice and representation to regional clients, who have neither time nor means to travel to the city, partner Lisa Paul and lawyer Genna Angelowitsch have opened permanent digs in town, with Melton councillor Sophie Ramsay set to open the new office.

Lisa believes a caring and supportive approach is crucial in helping clients.

Lisa, an accredited specialist in personal injury law, says her practice really puts the ‘personal’ back into service.

“We want to see them get their lives back on track. But we understand the legal claims process can be overwhelming and, having already suffered injury, clients are facing further stress. “And that’s why we’re patient listeners, able to guide them, expertly and clearly, every step of the way.”

“Not only are our lawyers and support staff locals, with an insider understanding of community issues and needs, they’re also at the end of the line when clients call us,” Lisa explains. “We’re not a call centre – we speak directly with callers.

WorkCover and industrial accidents, traffic accidents and public space injuries are covered by Adviceline, which now has five offices in outer Melbourne and Moe. It’s a division of leading commercial law firm Holding Redlich, established in 1975.

“Advice is given straight away and, in most cases, our clients will be represented by the same lawyer throughout the process. And, very importantly, we cap our costs so that clients receive the majority of compensation.”

Adviceline Injury Lawyers, 43 Wallace Square, Melton. Opens 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. Inquiries: 9321 9777, email advice@alil.com.au or visit www.advicelineinjurylawyers.com.au

“Palm Lake Resort was our first stop on a weekend when we chose to visit five different places. From our first tour of the village, we both felt it had a genuinely friendly vibe. We could easily see ourselves living there, even though it meant Margaret moving from the only home she’s ever known.” The pair put down their deposits on the same day, on homes yet to be constructed. They wanted to be part of the process of seeing their homes being built from the ground up, watching as their dreams became a reality. “Six months after construction started, we both moved in – on the same day! It was great because we could help each other with the move and be each other’s support,” Beverley said.

25 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 21, 2016

FRANCE CAPS: 32 GOALS SCORED: ORED: 5 Pogba made his debut for the French national team in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Georgia. He played the full 90 minutes of the 3-1 win. Pogba earned his second cap four days later in another 2014 World Cup qualifier against Spain. He scored his first international goal against Belarus on September 10, 2013. He is a powerful, skilful and creative player who has an eye for goal and a penchant for the spectacular.

PORTUGAL CAPS: 127 GOALS SCORED: 58 Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born in Funchal, Madeira Island. By the time he was 10 he was already recognised as a phenomenon, a kid who ate, slept and drank the game. It was under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson that Ronaldo developed into what many consider to be the greatest footballer in the world. In addition to his FIFA world player of the year award, Ronaldo also won the coveted Ballon d’Or three times. Fast, tricky and powerful, he can play in any forward position. He will take on any defenders with searing pace and appears to dance with the ball stuck to his feet.

26 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 21, 2016

COLOMBIA CAPS: CA 45 GOALS SCORED: ORED: 16 Goals, assists, dribbling, pace, talent and versatility – that’s James David Rodríguez Rubio. The 2014 World Cup’s Golden Boot winner is a spectacular player. He is young but has a wealth of experience from spells in the Argentinian, Portuguese, French and Spanish leagues. He scored six times at the World Cup in Brazil and left indelible memories such as the volley against Uruguay that was chosen by FIFA.com users as the goal of the tournament. Rodriguez was key to Colombia reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time and was named the man of the match in three of the five matches he played in.

ARGENTINA CAPS: 109 GOALS SCORED: 53 With five Ballon d’Or awards to his name (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015) Lionel Messi can be officially considered the best player in the world. His individual skill is astoundingly creative and he leaves rivals with a constant feeling of unease. A natural left footer, he is stunningly versatile. Able to play in the middle or whichever wing is required, it is out on the right that he feels most comfortable. He isn’t the tallest of players, but his speed and physique enables him to cope with the toughest and most physical defenders. He is strong, and holds on to the ball as if it were stuck to his feet. He is also a specialist at all dead-ball situations, especially free kicks and penalties.

SPORT Mustangs galloping ahead on the back of skills boost A strong first-half performance has helped Melton Mustangs cement their spot in Hockey Victoria’s Premier League 2 top four. The fourth-placed Mustangs beat fifth-placed MHSOB 2-1. Mustangs co-coach Ron Shadbolt said the match could have been over in the first half if his side had converted in front of goal. “It was a pretty even match, but it shouldn’t have been,” Shadbolt said. “We had 33 circle entries, which is a massive amount, and they only had six. We dominated with the ball for 40 of the 70 minutes. We weren’t efficient in front of goal and missed four or five easy chances.” The win opens up a five-point gap between the Mustangs and the chasing pack.

And just three points separates the Mustangs and second-placed WestVic Hockey. Shadbolt said it would be difficult to maintain the margin between the Mustangs and the teams outside the top four, but he had faith the side would make finals. He said the club’s senior side had so far performed better than expected. “If the girls play to their potential we should make finals and finish third or fourth,” he said. “We had expectations that both our first and reserves teams could make finals. We thought our reserves side had potential to win the flag. Both teams are still in the hunt and we should have at least one team make it.”

At the weekend, the reserves – sitting in fourth – had a 3-0 win over second-placed MHSOB. Shadbolt said he and women’s program co-coach David Gorton had worked hard with the players in the off season. “We worked on a lot of technical things with the women’s teams,” he said. “We developed a completely new game plan and it’s becoming successful for them. “It’s all about skills – we’ve worked tirelessly on them.” The Mustangs next game is against bottom side Gippsland Bulls on Sunday in Drouin. Devils job to find form By Tara Murray The opening rounds of the Ballarat Netball League season haven’t panned out the way Darley would have liked. The Devils are struggling with consistency, which has cost them dearly with just two wins from their opening eight games. Speaking before Saturday’s match, Devils’ coach Marika Barnes said they could have won at least three more games had they taken their opportunities. It was similar against Ballarat at the weekend when the Devils trailed by six goals at quartertime before losing by eight, 39-31. “It’s not the way we planned it to start,” Barnes said. “We could have been up the ladder. “Three games – Redan, Sunbury and last weekend – we could have, and should have, won.” Barnes said the biggest issue was that good netball was being played only in patches. She said this was partly due to having a new team and players learning each other’s game. “It’s a new side, with only three players from last year,” the coach said. “We’ve got a new goaler in Tara Parker; Brooke Pengelly has stepped into the midcourt, while Ashlee Depetro is a versatile player who hasn’t played much because of injury.” Meanwhile, Courtney Barnes has come up through the lower grades into the A-grade team. Barnes said that despite the A-graders not getting the results they were after, there was still an improvement on recent years. “Against North Ballarat City at three-quarter time, we were down by eight to 10 goals before they ran away with it in the last quarter,” she said. “We were used to losing to sides like that by 30 to 40 goals. So I’ve said, ‘keep your heads up, we’re improving’.” Barnes, who is also netball co-ordinator for the club’s junior sides, said there was a lot of talent coming through the club. “Melanie Freeman is a bright up-and-comer who the past couple of weeks has played in C and B grades, and she was best on court in the B-grade match. She’s only 15. “In our under-19s, we have three permanent players, who are still playing under-17s and are standing up and doing well.” The Devils sit ninth on the ladder ahead of Bacchus Marsh and Melton South. On Saturday, Bacchus Marsh lost 48-38 to Redan, while Melton South was thrashed by North Ballarat City, 87-21. Melton’s hopes of closing in on the top six failed with Sunday’s 47-33 loss against Ballarat.

Centrals chase consistent run Melton Centrals are hoping a more settled second half to the Riddell District Netball League season will set them up for another finals campaign. With players in and out of the side and unable to get a consistent run on the court, Centrals coach Randy Pereira said the side had been nowhere near its best. Despite this, Centrals have suffered only two losses, against the sides above them on the ladder Riddell and Macedon. On Saturday, Centrals easily accounted for Broadford, winning 54-24. Goaler Rebecca Morabito was best on court as she starts to find form after returning from having her second child. Pereira said he was reasonably happy with how his team had started the season. “We’ve had a lot of unavailability,” he said. “Bec has come back from having a baby and Aimee Deacon had her first game in the lower grades last week, also after having a baby. “Mel Laird has been in and out of the side because of Victorian Netball League commitments.” Pereira said he expected his side to be up there with Riddell, Macedon and Rupertswood. “Riddell aren’t unbeatable but are a very good team,” he said. “When we played them they shot 58 goals and should have had more.” Reigning Ryan medallist Tran Truong has returned to the court after a shortlived retirement. “She retired and we had some injuries and I asked if she could fill in,” Pereira said. “I think she knew that filling in would lead to playing the rest of the year.” Pereira said he hoped Truong’s return and Morabito’s move to the goal attack position would lead to a more settled attacking end. “Bec was still getting fitness so we had to play her in shooter,” he said. “Vanessa is more a holding shooter and has been struggling playing goal attack. “We moved Bec out to goal attack last week and it worked better. “Tran and Bec have played so much together, they have a good connection.” Centrals’ other three sides are also sitting in the top six in their divisions. Most pleasing for Pereira is seeing the under-19s playing well, after looking like they wouldn’t have a team in the off-season. Winners in other weekend matches were Riddell, Macedon, Rupertswood and Romsey. Tara Murray

Young Jets stop Melton By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds’ winning streak has ended at the hands of the Sunbury Jets in Big V men’s division 1 basketball. Having won their previous six matches, the Thoroughbreds entered the match favourites against a young Jets side that has been inconsistent at times this year. The Jets, though, were on their game, eventually winning 75-66. Nothing separated the sides in the first quarter as they went goal-for-goal, with the Jets in front by one point at the first break. The Thoroughbreds found themselves chasing the Jets in the second and were down by as much as eight points. A three-pointer from Melton’s Billy Feben reduced the margin to five at half-time. Scores were level halfway through the third, before the Jets opened the margin back up to six points at the final break. The Thoroughbreds got within two points late in the final quarter, but that was as close as they could get. With Melton committing fouls late in a bid to stop the clock, the margin blew out to nine points. Ivan Harris top-scored for the Thoroughbreds with 24 points, while also pulling down eight rebounds. Cameron McCallum was the only other Thoroughbred player to score double figures, finishing with 11 points. The loss means the Thoroughbreds drop a spot on the ladder and are in fifth ahead of a trip to Mildura on Saturday.

Melton Phoenix had its best win of the FFV state league 4 west season with a 4-0 result over Altona North on Saturday. Michael Kapiris scored a double in the win, with Rhys Cody and Jason Moody also finding the back of the net. The win keeps the Phoenix in touch with the top four, only two points behind fourth. Spring Hills suffered a 2-1 loss to Surf Coast.

Football

The four Central Highlands Football League leaders all recorded victories to maintain their positions. With only percentage separating the top four – Buninyong, Gordon, Hepburn and Springbank – every win is important in the run-up to a top-two finish. All four sides had convincing wins on Saturday, with 33 points the closest margin. In a close competition, three sides are a further game back from the top four.

WRFL

Caroline Springs had a massive win over Glenorden in Western Region Football League division 2. A win didn’t even look on the cards in the first quarter, as the Lakes trailed by 19 points at quarter-time. They were still down 13 points at the main break. In the second half, the Lakers kicked 12 goals to none, to win 18.16 (124)-9.6 (60). FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Melton & Moorabool Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly

Troubled, injury-hit Centrals search for consistency Melton Centrals’ match against Broadford in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday was about getting everyone back to playing their onfield roles. While the scoreboard showed a massive win to Broadford, Centrals coach Glenn Hopkins said it was now more about focusing on the team element. The Kangaroos ended up winning 24.17 (161)-8.8 (56). “It was a good game, but the final score didn’t show how well we played,” Hopkins said. “We had to get back to playing as a team and we achieved what we wanted.” Centrals began slowly before going goal for goal in the second quarter to stay in the game.

But injuries and restricted interchanges meant the Centrals couldn’t keep it up in the second half when the Kangaroos ran over their opponent. “We lost our two ruckman in the first 20 minutes,” Hopkins said. “We had to find someone who could ruck and be competitive, and Jonathan Ferri and Samuel Apineru had to go in there. “Samuel and Junior Oneone had already played in the under-18s and were backing up.” Levi Sands and new recruit Michael Egan were best for Centrals, while James Aquilina kicked three goals. Getting on the field was a welcome distraction

for the club as much of the interest at Centrals in the previous two weeks was about what was happening off the field. Star forward Rex Hickman put in a clearance to move to Broadford and there were rumours about whether the other key forward, Matt Gilmore, would remain. Neither played at the weekend. “We’re not sure what’s happening,” Hopkins said. “Rex has applied for a clearance to Broadford, which has been declined, and we haven’t heard what Matt’s doing.” Hopkins said the focus for the next few weeks was to try and match it with teams for longer periods of time.

Jets step up for top win By Lance Jenkinson It was left to the lesser lights to power Western Jets to a crucial 33-point win over Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup at Warrawee Park on Saturday. There was hardly a weak link despite the Jets having to make do without star quartet Brodie Romensky, Brock McGregor, Oscar Junker and Daniel Venables, who were part of Vic Metro’s stunning comeback victory over South Australia in the under-18 national championships in Adelaide on Sunday. Jets coach Torin Baker was thrilled with his side’s ability to focus on the strengths of the players available and not fret over the big names missing. “I thought it was our most even performance of the year,” he told Star Weekly. “There were no real major lapses in the game, so from that point of view it was a real positive. “On the scoreboard, we won all four quarters, even if it was just by a little bit each time.” The result puts the Jets back in the finals mix. They join three other sides with 4-6 records filling positions six to nine on the ladder. One player who stood up in the big moments was crumbing forward Stephen Syme, who had a game-high three goals. He is averaging better than a goal a game for the Jets this season, but is far from a one-trick player. “He’s giving us both avenues,” Baker said. “Offensively he’s damaging and defensively he’s really good for us as well. He’s got real speed and puts on excellent pressure.” If the Jets were disappointed about a player missing out on Vic Metro’s final cut, it was the non-selection of Judah Dundon. Dundon has been fronting up for the Jets and continuing to produce the kind of football that has his club raving about his ability. The midfielder was front and centre when the foundations of the Jets’ victory were laid and remained as prolific when the last coat of paint was being applied. “He continually pumped the ball forward for us through the course of the day,” Baker said. “His contested work was good and he hit the scoreboard well with two really good goals.” Dundon was not working alone in the midfield. Wilson Berry and Connor Griffiths were outstanding support acts, generating plenty of drive for the Jets. Luke Hitch, a bottom-age player, showed an insatiable appetite for the contest in defence. The Jets will face the struggling Gippsland Power on the road in Morwell on Saturday. The Power has won just one game in 10, but Baker is not taking them lightly. “In my time at the club, we haven’t won at Gippsland, so I’m certainly wary of the trip,” Baker said. Meanwhile, the Western Jets Brad Johnson development squad members Xavier O’Halloran, Owen King, Buku Khamis, Hamish Murphy, Stefan Radovanovic and Zak Butters have made the final cut for Vic Metro’s squad to travel to the Gold Coast for the under-16 national championships next month. 46 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 21, 2016

“We’ve matched it with teams for small parts,” he said. “We need to be consistent and focus on everyone playing their part.” Centrals remain 11th on the ladder, ahead of winless Rockbank. The Rams’ season hit a new low against ladder leader Diggers Rest on Saturday, the Burras winning 48.27 (315)-1.2 (8). Diggers Rest scored at least 67 points in each quarter, including a massive 96 in the final quarter alone. Brandon Kilty kicked 12 goals in a best-onground performance, while Christopher Lawson bagged seven and Brent Tuckey five. Tara Murray

Late form, but still no win for Panthers It was a case of the worst and then the best of Melton South as it took on North Ballarat City in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. Playing their first game in three weeks, the Panthers were slow out of the blocks, scoring only two first-half goals. Although down by 69 points at the main break, they didn’t drop their heads, losing the second half by only four goals and going goal-for-goal in the final term. The final score was 25.16 (166)10.8 (68). Panthers coach Mark Pedersen said he didn’t think it was the lack of football in recent weeks that caused the poor start. “We started terribly and that’s been a problem all year,” he said. “We need to learn how to play four quarters. “We lost the second half by only four goals so when the effort was there, our footy was good. It’s very frustrating.” Pedersen said it wasn’t a case of fitness, but more of a young side still learning to play together consistently. “We have a lot of young players who still have to learn to play in this quality league. They are struggling to match it, physically and mentally, for four quarters. If I knew the answer to playing four quarters, we would have fixed it by now.” Marc Dransman kicked three goals for the Panthers, with Daniel Hiller and Angus Storey kicking two each. Daniel Leggett was adjudged the Panthers’ best player, Pedersen adding it was also his best for the club. While the seniors remain winless, Panthers’ reserves recorded their first win of the season. “It shows we have a bit of depth,” Pedersen said. “We’ll look at promoting two or three of those guys next week. “We have taken steps forward, and the future is good for this club.” Elsewhere, Sebastopol caused the upset of the season by knocking off Darley. In a match the reigning premiers were expected to win, the Devils were left to rue poor kicking in front of goal. Despite having fewer shots at goal, the Burras won, 8.10 (58)-5.18 (48). Bacchus Marsh also had a disappointing weekend, losing to Redan 10.10 (70)-7.13 (55). Melton returned to the winners’ list, with a 16-point victory over Ballarat. Melton sits outside the six, behind East Point and Darley on percentage.

Five-star rating puts Toyota dealer on top for service In 2014, Melton Toyota scored a five-star guest services rating, the highest customer service ranking across the Toyota network. Now, says service manager Leigh Cecil, the team is shooting for the president’s award, given to the number one dealership overall. Leigh explains how the ranking came about. “We regularly monitor client satisfaction levels, with strict assessment criteria, in both sales and servicing,” he says. “Not only does this ensure our standards never slip, but is the best indicator of successfully providing a ‘guest-first’ culture.” Outstanding premises make Melton Toyota a nice place to visit, whether to check out the new, used and demo vehicles in the showroom or yard, to get your vehicle serviced by a crew with 30 years’ combined experience or to source a genuine Toyota part or accessory. A while-you-wait express service is made doubly convenient at the progressive, proactive dealership via a clients’ lounge – with comfy seating, tea and coffee-making provision, workstations and free WiFi … that’s smart thinking and underscores the client-centric focus. “Courtesy cars, pick-up and delivery and customer drop-offs to their home or work in the local area are other very handy benefits when dealing with us – we even offer a free game of golf while awaiting the finish of a service. And servicing is price capped for three years, or 60,000 kilometres.” The all-new Toyota C-HR is slated for arrival in the showroom early next year. Motoring enthusiasts describe the sleek, muscular, daring style as shaping the future of small SUVs following a much-anticipated premiere at this year’s Geneva motor show. Leigh encourages registering your interest online to get in on some exciting opportunities. An exciting range of hybrid vehicles is also part of the Toyota stable. The Camry’s leading hybrid synergy drive technology, the Prius’ refinement and innovation, the Prius C’s zippy compactness and the eco-friendly, fuel-efficient Prius V people-mover are attracting more savvy car buyers than ever. The big range of used cars includes many makes and models, including always sought-after Toyotas. Melton Toyota, 143-147 High Street, Melton. Opens 7.30am-5.15pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday.
