Life experience fuels candidacy By Sumeyya Ilanbey Daryl Lang was only 15 when he forged his first career as an apprentice welder. Forty-five years on, the Melton man includes the military, chief executive of the Grafton Institute and senior practitioner with the Department of Human Services as roles on his resumé. Now, he is adding ‘political candidate’. Mr Lang, who was endorsed as the Liberal candidate for the seat of Melton earlier this month, has been campaigning extensively for four weeks. “I think the genesis of a healthy community is a functioning community, where everyone blends in with everyone, co-operates and contributes,” he said. “We need more support for the community.” Mr Lang says he’s committed to supporting local businesses and alleviating youth unemployment, which was 20 per cent at the last census. “I think youth unemployment is a particular issue. If we can create more employment opportunities in the area and support local industries, we can give people the confidence to set up a business. It won’t solve all the problems, but it’s a start.” Effective representation was lacking in the western suburbs, Mr Lang said, and he preferred that communities drive the politics rather than the other way around. “It’s easy to say [put] a bridge here, a footpath there, but the need for infrastructure

Message from the Mayor Cr Bob Turner As my term as Mayor draws to �� ������� ����� ������� ��� ������� ��� some of the personal highlights of the past twelve months. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet some truly wonderful people in my journey as Mayor. I’ve taken part in many vibrant celebrations with some of our emerging cultural ������������������������������������������������������������� fauna from the environmental groups that work so tirelessly for our municipality.

I’ve visited schools, been involved with community groups and sporting clubs and have enjoyed the opportunity to hear more about the great work being done in our community. Being Mayor has been a great learning experience for me; one I will look back on with great affection and honour for many years to come. As Mayor, I’ve been afforded many opportunities to advocate on behalf of our community to all levels of government. In particular, improved transport options for residents, including the frequency and duplication of our train service as well as the duplication of the Melton Highway, the need for additional schools and improvements to our health services. I am also really pleased that we have developed a strategic framework to outline our advocacy efforts. Advocating for our community is something I’ve truly embraced in the last year and will continue to do for the remainder of my term. In closing, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me in the past twelve months. Your encouragement has meant the world to me and I am honoured to have had the opportunity to serve this wonderful community. It’s also wonderful to see that Council is currently developing plans for two, new recreation and play spaces in Hillside, at the Boronia Drive and Kenswick Drive Reserves. Both will feature new tree plantings, pathways and playgrounds and will be welcome additions to our growing community. I recently put up a motion to Council to establish homework groups at the Caroline Springs and Melton libraries. As a teacher and Councillor, a lot of parents approach me for ideas on how their children can get help, encouragement and support while doing their homework. The new groups I have proposed come in response to community feedback – a strong indicator of how both Council and I, personally, listen to our residents and respond to their needs. Get the dirt on a scarce vintage By Ben Thomas

fast-ripening year, I don’t think there’s a huge flavour difference in the wines. “But when you start drilling into the structure, the mouthfeel and the tannins are where you really start to see differences. “[With] Christies Beach formation and Ngaltinga black cracking clays and heavier soil profiles, you’re getting more primary fruit characters as a rule of thumb. The wines have more upfront fruit and rounder tannins. “The finer soils, such as Tapley Hill formation and North Maslin sands and Blanche Point, where there’s shallower soils and rock over sandstone, you tend to find the tannins are finer and grittier.” Fragos says that the focus is shifting away from simply soil to the other elements of terroir. “Early on we focused hard on the geology front and we’ve now taken a step back and are also recognising all the other topographic differences that affect the grapes – there’s soil, climate, aspect,” he says. “If you’re closer to the sea you have sea breezes and if you’re inland you are more influenced by the gully winds.” We’re only a few chapters into the Scarce Earth story and I’m already looking forward to the 2013 instalment. Scarce Earth wines are made in small quantities and are available direct from the wineries online. Some will also appear at Melbourne’s better wine merchants soon.

dirt. There was a fine line-up of wines to taste, too, but the dirt was the star of the show. It wasn’t just any dirt, but a tapestry of ancient soil formations that date back hundreds of millions of years with names including Pirramimma Sandstone, Blanche Point, Kurrajong and Ngaltinga formations. To anyone driving around the Vale that day, our small group must have been quite a sight as we stopped at roadside cuttings to point at and talk about the ancient soil formations. Since 2009 many of McLaren Vale’s winemakers have made small batches of shiraz grown on individual soils to get an understanding of what influences the soils have on the wines. They bottle the wines under the Scarce Earth banner. The idea is to bottle a shiraz from a single vineyard, making it in a hands-off manner to give the dirt the best chance to stamp its character on the wine. The fourth Scarce Earth vintage has just been released. Having tasted wines from each release, I can tell you that for pure enjoyment the latest releases, from the 2012 vintage, are the best yet. There’s a purity to the wines that also helps tell the story of McLaren Vale’s ancient soils. It’s a story more about structure and tannin than flavour, says Chapel Hill’s Michael Fragos, one of Scarce Earth’s driving forces since its conception. “The differences [we see] now we’re five years in are the tannins: their roundness and the shape of the tannins,” he says. “There are flavour differences in shiraz depending on where you are but, in 2012, which was an even,

Colleges court Tarneit talent By Liam Twomey The bigger the moment, the better Dejan Vasiljevic performs. The Tarneit resident has proved time and again to be a special basketball talent and his latest achievements have the game buzzing. Competing at the under-17 FIBA world championships in Dubai earlier this year, Vasiljevic dominated the tournament from start to finish. As a senior member of the Australian team, he helped take his side all the way to the gold medal game against the US. Despite being three-time defending champions, the Americans were pushed to the brink of defeat by the fired-up Australian side before holding on for a seven point win. Vasiljevic was in the thick of the action, dropping 29 points in the final. “It was a great experience to play against the best players and countries from around the world,” he said. “To come second was just unbelievable. Probably the biggest moment from the team point of view was the semi-final where we were down by 24 points against Spain. “We came back to win … it was an amazing team effort. “Before the tournament, we were well prepared and confident with how we were going to perform. “After the semi-final we thought we could go on and win.” On top of a great team result, the individual

accolades came thick and fast for Vasiljevic, who was named in the all-tournament team made up of the event’s five best players. Previous under-17 FIBA all-tournament team representatives have included American Bradley Beal, who is now a shooting guard for NBA team the Washington Wizards. Vasiljevic was Australia’s leading point scorer for the world titles, averaging 17.4 points a game. “It was an honour to be named in that team,” he said. “I had a really good tournament … I got a few calls from coaches after that congratulating me. It was a great feeling.” Since the world championships, Vasiljevic has been a popular figure as US colleges chase his signature for when he finishes high school. Currently studying at the AIS, the 17-year-old will have one more year in Canberra before needing to make a decision about his US college future. Meanwhile, the former Bacchus Marsh College student is focusing on his next major tournament. Vasiljevic will part of the under-19 Australian team that will contest the world championships in Greece next year.

Rams’ new coach eyes top four

Salary cap to be trialled By Liam Twomey and Tara Murray Football leagues throughout Victoria could soon be operating under a salary cap. The proposal was made last week by an AFL Victoria working party created to investigate how best to tackle rapidly increasing player payments at local level. The cap is set to be trialled next year and will be supported by an appropriate enforcement policy and possibly by a player points system. After releasing its findings, AFL Victoria general manager Steven Reaper said the working party had asked leagues to consider how the changes would work in their competitions. The leagues’ feedback will be considered before the official test guidelines are announced for the 2015 season. In reaching its findings, the working party conducted an extensive survey, which was completed by 369 Victorian clubs. “The development of an AFL Victoria-led statewide solution was backed by 83 per cent of clubs who responded to the survey,” Reaper said.

“More than 50 per cent of clubs surveyed also indicated their support of the implementation of a statewide salary cap despite acknowledging that such a measure creates enforcement challenges.” Members of the working party included Essendon District Football League chief executive Marc Turri and Eastern Football League chief executive Phil Murton. Diggers Rest president Chris Payne, whose club plays in the Riddell District Football League, said something had to be done about player payments, but he was unsure how the proposed changes would work. “It’s all well and good to bring it in, but how will it be policed?,” he asked. “Something needs to be done in the future. Clubs have to live within their means. I’m glad I’m not overseeing it.” As for a possible points system, Payne wasn’t as supportive. “Obviously, the points system will benefit clubs like Sunbury and Rupertswood, who have a big junior system,” he said. He said getting in big names from outside the area had massive positives.

Diggers Rest has had great success in recent years with former AFL players Brent Tuckey and Callum Wilson. “Tuckey is a good example,” Payne said. “Supporters want to be there when he comes to the club. If you don’t get good people in, you don’t promote the club. “It’s a win-win for the club and the league, getting in someone like Brent.” AFL Victoria is yet to name which local leagues will be part of the trial in 2015. Western Region Football League chief executive Bob Tregear said his league would be happy to participate. “We haven’t seen the full details of what they’re proposing to implement, but it will be some combination of points system and salary cap,” Tregear said. “We acknowledge that you won’t be able to enforce it accurately all the way along, but when people are caught cheating it there will be severe penalties. In principle, we will support it. We’re willing to be a part of the trial next year.” AFL Victoria is expecting to announce the trial guidelines before Christmas.

New Rockbank coach Gavin Sporle doesn’t want his team to be a one-finals wonder. The Rams finished sixth on the Riddell District Football League ladder last year and played finals for the first time in 13 years. Only two years earlier, the club was anchored to the bottom of the competition ladder. But with a long history of involvement in the RDFL, Sporle has seen a number of clubs finish sixth and then be unable to take the next step the following year. “You play football to be a finals football team,” he said. “That’s the goal. We made finals last season, which was a fantastic result. “So many sides have slotted into that sixth spot in the RDFL finals in recent years but just haven’t been able to crack that top four or five. That’s obviously the goal for our football club now. “We have finished sixth and we really need to make the moves to push ourselves into that top-four bracket and become really competitive with the top sides in the competition.” Sporle has hit the ground running after being appointed to the top job at Rockbank in early September. He was an assistant coach at the Rams the previous two seasons and knows exactly what the club needs to take the next step. “I think the list we have is very strong and has certainly got the capability of going to the next level,” he said. “No matter where you sit you always need to bring other recruits into the environment. “Having been around the club for a couple of years now and having a look at what was done last year, recruiting-wise, we’re really targeting key position defenders and ruckmen. “That’s what we’ve been looking at so far in the group of players we’ve been speaking to.” Sporle said he and his coaching panel were also excited by the young talent already on hand. The club is coming off a finals appearance by the under-18s and is hoping a number of those players will take the next step into senior football. Sporle believes the combination of strong young players and making the most of Rockbank’s position in a growth corridor could set the club up long term. “It’s easy for us to sit back and say, we’re in the middle of a growth area and eventually that will take off, and we will take off. “But I want to make it a strong club prior to the growth area taking off because the reality is, the footy club can become very strong within the RDFL over the next three to five years.” Rockbank will begin preseason training next month.
