Police seeks bankcard bandits

Police are searching for two men who stole another man’s bankcard, demanded his pin and made three withdrawals at a nearby automatic teller machine. The man was walking down Hampshire Road, Sunshine about 8.30am on Friday, March 21, when the two men, described as of Pacific Islander appearance, approached him. Toy stories shared Dolls, puppets, Lego, robots and toys galore were on display last week at Melton South Primary School’s toy exhibition. Classrooms were transformed into museums as pupils’ favourite toys took pride of place. Rileigh (pictured) and her fellow grade 2 classmates wrote descriptions about their favourite toys during the term then shared them with the school community at an event last Friday. Grade 2 teacher Heidi Clayton said the pupils were excited to be part of the exhibition, which she hoped would foster pupils’ imaginations and help their development. The exhibition was held as part of the grade 2 integrated studies unit, which looked at how toys were made and how toys had changed over time. Yasemin Talat

Police are investigating a letter drop that has incorrectly published information about a local man. The letter was posted to residents in the Diggers Rest and Sunbury areas by an unknown person. The letter accuses the man of committing criminal acts. Police said the accusations are false and that the man who is the subject of the letters has no prior criminal history. Police are asking anyone who receives such a letter to hand it into Melton or Sunbury police stations.

Houses in Brimbank and Melton are among the most affordable for people buying their first home, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria. First-home buyers are now entitled to a 50 per cent discount on stamp duty, which could save new home owners up to $15,535 on a $600,000 property. But for those looking to spend a little less, new REIV research shows it is possible to find a property so affordable the mortgage repayments would be less than $200 a week. The REIV earmarks Albion as the cheapest place for first-home buyers, with a one-bedroom flat costing $162,185 based on June median prices. Including stamp duty and $2500 in fees, the weekly mortgage repayments would be $184 based on a 10 per cent deposit, a 30-year mortgage at 5 per cent and including lenders’ mortgage insurance. People looking for a bigger property can cast their eyes to Melton South, where the total cost of a three-bedroom home came to $227,785, meaning weekly repayments of $259. In Melton, the total cost was just under $250,000, leading to repayments of $282 a week. “So for some young home buyers, paying a mortgage could be cheaper than renting,” REIV chief executive Enzo Raimondo said. “Many first-time buyers read about rising property prices and think buying a home is out of reach. But the increased discount on stamp duty for Victorian first-home buyers helps make that dream of buying a home of your own come true. “While some of these suburbs, in middle and outer Melbourne, may not be the buyers’ first choice, they can provide a great start.”

Nurse to stand for state seat (Damjan Janevski)

Shashi Turner, a mental health nurse at Sunshine Hospital, will stand as a candidate for the newly formed Voice for the West Party. Kororoit, which includes Albanvale, Caroline Springs, Kings Park, Burnside, Cairnlea, Deer Park, Derrimut, Ravenhall, Mount Cottrell, Rockbank, Plumpton and part of Truganina, is held by Labor MP Marlene Kairouz.

Ms Turner, 60, was born in India and moved to Australia 30 years ago, living in Niddrie and Essendon before settling in Caroline Springs. She speaks English, Hindi, Tamil and Kannada. She said public transport infrastructure, including a train station for Caroline Springs, health and a new public high school around Caroline Springs were the big issues facing the electorate. “[I’m standing] mainly to have a voice in the west, where health, education and infrastructure is concerned,” Ms Turner said. “There’s nobody, specifically nurses, in Parliament who has that personal experience.

“If you look at the health minister, he’s not a nurse, so he doesn’t know the issues. That’s what I’d like to stand up for to help the community. “I have raised my family in this area and the time has come for ordinary residents to demand a better deal for the west.” Dr Berhan Ahmed, who is leading the Voice for the West candidates, believes Ms Turner would need about 12 per cent of the primary vote to take the seat. The state election will be held on Saturday, November 29.

A rhyming detective created by three Gilson College students has helped them win a statewide film competition. Year 10 students Jennifer Nguyen, Madeleine Giacchi and Megha Ashoka were the brains behind five-minute film The Detective, which warns young people about the dangers of online dating scams. “We thought rhyming the script would make it more interesting … there were a few good plays on words,” said Megha, who played the savvy but comical detective. Their entry, which was filmed in one day, took out Consumer Affairs Victoria’s Consumer Stuff Film Fest ahead of 36 other entries by 109 students. “Our central message was that scams are

all around us,’’ Madeleine said, ‘‘and we have to take care to protect ourselves from being victims.” CAV executive director Claire Noone said the annual competition encouraged students to express their views on shopping rights and common scams. “Developing strong consumer and financial literacy skills is critical for young people,’’ Dr Noone said. ‘‘By educating them on the importance of their consumer decisions, we reduce the risk that teenagers will make bad consumer or financial decisions.” The winning film can be viewed online at www.consumer.vic.gov.au. By Charlene Macaulay It’s time to get physical. Olivia Newton-John is calling on residents across the west to throw on the lycra and join her in a Wellness Walk on Sunday, September 28. The walk through the streets of Ivanhoe, finishing with a street party and concert, will raise money for the wellness and supportive care programs provided at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre at the Austin Hospital. The centre is dedicated to providing the very best in medical care, treatment and research to help stop cancer destroying the lives of so many people. It’s a disease Ms Newton-John is all too familiar with. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992; that same weekend, her father died from liver cancer. Her sister died last year from brain cancer. “It’s touched my whole life in many ways,” Ms Newton-John said. “When I went through cancer I was able to participate in wellness programs such as yoga and meditation, and I did herbs and massage – all the things I’ve been able to implement in the wellness centre.” Ms Newton-John said it had been amazing to see the centre come to fruition. She now has big plans for a new Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute at the Austin. “I believe that we’re going to be the team that sees an end to cancer. That’s my dream and we have some wonderful young researchers there with some wonderful ideas.” The Wellness Walk caps off a big month for Ms Newton-John, who hosted the ONJ Gala at Flemington Racecourse and will sing the national anthem at this year’s AFL grand final. By Rod Easdown Have a look on YouTube for the latest prank LG has pulled to publicise its big ultra high definition television. It has replaced a window in a skyscraper with the television. As job candidates sit through their interviews, they see in the “window” a fiery comet crash into the city, the shockwave racing towards them. Most wind up on the floor. If you haven’t seen a UHD telly, wander into a big electronics store. When you see a screen that stops you cold, there it is. These things are amazing – the picture is so sharp you can see the filigree in a resort hotel’s balcony rails clear across a shimmering lake. It’s breathtaking. And prices aren’t bad for new tech. For between five and six grand you can take your pick of 165-centimetre televisions from any of the big brands. Lesser brands are half that. They come much bigger too, but they don’t go much smaller than 140 centimetres or so because below that size it’s hard to pick the improvement over regular full high definition screens. You stand there, quietly spellbound, and start doing the sums, a salesperson murmuring siren-like in your ear. But there is a catch and you won’t discover it until you get home. You’re never going to get picture quality like you saw in the store. Well, not for a while anyway. What you saw was a demonstration reel specially recorded in UHD. Currently demo reels are about the only

things that have been recorded in UHD. There are no UHD movies in the shops (there are a few Blu-rays that have been mastered to perform at their best on a UHD screen, but the native recording is still regular FHD – full high definition), there are no UHD broadcasts and no UHD downloads. UHD is four times sharper than FHD so demands four times the data handling. Recording it is expensive and complex. Once recorded, anything movie-length won’t fit on a Blu-ray disc. If and when native UHD becomes available, it will probably be provided on USB or by download. After 3D broadcasts fell flat as a tack, it’s unlikely television stations will start UHD broadcasts any time soon. Raise this with salespeople and they’ll say the television upscales the image – whether it be broadcast, DVD, Blu-ray or YouTube – to UHD. But while upscaling works with varying success, it’s still not as good as those demo reels. The question you should ask yourself, however, is this; how much definition do you need? Look at the big FHD tellies on display. Their resolution is still terrific. You can get software that brings out their best anywhere. The killer point is they cost a lot less than UHD. By the way, when you’re investigating UHD, you’ll also hear about 4K. It’s exactly the same thing. Some manufacturers call it UHD and others, ever helpful, call it 4K.

Centrals win when it counts By Liam Twomey Melton Centrals saved their best for last in the Riddell District Netball League A-grade grand final on Sunday. Taking on competition front-runner Riddell, Melton dominated the contest from start to finish on its way to a 16-goal win. It’s the first time the Centrals have beaten Riddell this year, after suffering two losses in the home-and-away rounds and another defeat in the qualifying final. Melton coach Randy Pereira said the turning point came the last time the two sides met. “They really trounced us the first two times,” he said. “They beat us by 18 goals then by 17. ‘‘That qualifying final we lost by six or seven, but we really had a shocker. ‘‘We threw the ball away; they hardly missed a shot and we shot terribly. I thought if we could fix that stuff up and tighten our defence, that could be the difference.” Pereira got his wish on Sunday, with the Centrals playing high-quality netball from the opening whistle at Romsey Park. After going goal for goal the first few possessions, Melton ramped up its defensive effort in the second half of the first quarter. Centrals forced several turnovers from defence and the midcourt with goalers Rebecca Morabito and Renee Hulls taking full advantage. The pair combined for 18 goals to give Melton an eight-goal lead at quarter-time. Things only got worse for Riddell, with the Bombers unable to string strong passages of play together. The Centrals continued to charge forward and, after extending the lead in the next two terms, were able to wind down and enjoy the final minutes of the 56-40 win.

Bloods into the big one By Liam Twomey Melton will take on Sunbury in Saturday’s Ballarat Netball League grand final. The Bloods booked their place in the decider with a seven-goal win against East Point in the preliminary final on Saturday. Melton was led by young star Libby Birch, who was at her dominant best through the midcourt. Around goals, playing coach Melissa McCauley provided a constant headache for the East Point defenders, scoring 47 goals to be the dominant shooter on the court as the Bloods won 50-43. McCauley said she was impressed with the way her side was able to rebound from a tough loss to Sunbury in the qualifying final a week earlier. In that match, Melton gave up a five-goal lead at three-quarter time to lose in overtime. “Last week was a bit disappointing and we spoke about that before the game,” McCauley said. “I said once we get in front, we need to control the game and take ownership of it. ‘‘We felt like last week we let the game go by making simple errors and not backing each other up. ‘‘This week, we made sure we were doing all those things and continuing to add goals. We’re all pretty stoked to be in the grand final. I’m really happy for all the girls.” Melton and Sunbury also played once during the home-and-away season. On that occasion the Bloods proved too good, winning 54-38. One player Melton must stop if it’s going to win the premiership is Sunbury shooter Sophie Gunn, who scored 46 goals when the sides met in the qualifying final. McCauley says her team is looking forward to the challenge. “I believe that as a team, we do have the goods to beat Sunbury,” she said. “Hopefully, we’ll come away with the win. ‘‘Sunbury is probably in the same boat; they believe they can win. ‘‘I think it’s a testament to the competition this year that either team can win. ‘‘It will come down to who plays better on the day. “We will try and put a lot of pressure on the feeders into Sophie and really force them to work hard.”

Phoenix limps to third loss Injury-hit Melton couldn’t match it with Surf Coast in state league 4 soccer on Saturday, succumbing 2-1 – the club’s third loss in a row. Melton coach Theo Karapanagiotidis praised his side for fighting out the match with a number of his best players watching from the sidelines. “We’re absolutely decimated by injuries,” he said. “Five of my best six players were out. “I really have a lot of admiration for the guys who played. “It was quite hot and the refereeing wasn’t the greatest, but we fought to the very end. “What makes it tough is that with a full squad I think we could have finished second or third. “We can’t do anything about that now. We just have to get on with business. “To the guys’ credit, they’re coming to training and they’re working hard, which is great to see.” The loss keeps Melton in fifth spot on the ladder with a 10-9-2 record. Phoenix will play the final match of the season at home this weekend, against 11th-placed Altona North. Karapanagiotidis said he wanted to finish the season on a high. “We want to win every game,” he said. “The last couple of months have been hard. But if we can win the last game of the season, being at home it will be such a great end to the year. “At the end of the day, you look at the year and you have your pros and cons, but three points in front of our home fans would be fantastic.” In other state league 4 results from the weekend, Brimbank beat Laverton Park 4-2, Bell Park got the better of Point Cook 3-0, and Hoppers Crossing smashed Melbourne City 7-1.

Deer Park is the first club in Western Region Football League division 1 history to land the premiership by winning every match of the season. The Lions are the kings of the jungle for the second year running after their star-studded line-up obliterated Spotswood by 77 points in a desperately lopsided grand final at Chirnside Park in Werribee on Saturday. Kwame McHarg was at his brilliant best with seven goals for the Lions and was joined on Deer Park’s best-players list by Chris Stewart, Shylo Smith, Heath Ayres, Shaun Harrison and Jackson Barling. Essendon District Football League side Taylors Lakes kicked off its search for a new senior coach last week. The Lions are hunting a replacement for Steve

Burns, who stood down at the end of the season. Burns took over the top job at the Lions in 2009 and didn’t have to wait long to achieve the ultimate success. In 2010 he coached the club to the division 2 premiership and earned a jump up to premier division. After being relegated back to division 2 a year later, the Lions have played finals the past three years. Taylors Lakes president Peter Gavos said Burns was the best coach the club had had. “Steve has really raised the bar and we need to maintain that high level of coaching,” he said. “He’s been magnificent for the club and I’d say he has been the best coach to come through TLFC. He’s been unbelievable in his service to the club. He has the respect of everyone, is a great person on and off the ground, and we wish him all the best in future.”
