ABOUT THE ART RT & INDUSTRY FESTIV FESTIVAL Industry is a lens through which we can view and acknowledge the past and generate ideas on how we can build and design the future. Over 10 days, the Art & Industry Festival will celebrate and investigate the ever-changing industrial and manufacturing heartland of Australia based in Melbourne’s western suburbs. This inspiring new festival puts a spotlight on the local industrial creators and resources in the Hobsons Bay area that is home to craft brewers, carmakers, designers, oil tanks and

treasured heritage buildings. Culminating in multiple art presentations at Spotswood, Newport, Williamstown, Altona and Laverton; and a family night at Seaworks featuring fireworks, car crushing, sideshows and songs. The Art & Industry Festival is produced and created by Hubcap Productions with its principal partner Hobsons Bay City Council. ARTIST Tony Mead

Vivid, but no fantasy The red carpet will be rolled out on a night of spectacular fashion in Footscray this month. A Vivid Fantasy fashion show is coming to Footscray Community Arts Centre on November 13. Designer and organiser Errick Kim says six designers will showcase a range of wear, from traditional Vietnamese dress to contemporary designs. “This is our second year and we’ve got a lot of people involved,” he said. “We want to open the doors on fashion, but we’ll have performances as well; a dance group will open the show and we’ll have a local Vietnamese singer.” Mr Kim hopes to make the show part of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. Independent Catherine Cumming will celebrate her 20th year in council next year after being returned in Stony Creek, where former ALP councillor Cuc Lam took the second vacancy. Three of Maribyrnong’s positions were left for the taking when single-term councillors Grant Miles, Cameron McDonald and Nam Quach all stepped down. ■ Full

ward councillor Carl Marsich lost his seat on the council, as did Jason Price in Cherry Lake ward. Maribyrnong’s new council will have five women and two men, a reversal of the previous term. The ALP again holds three of seven Maribyrnong seats, the return of former councillor Cuc Lam being offset by the surprise exit of stalwart Michael Clarke. Martin Zakharov, of the ALP, will be joined in Yarraville ward for his third term by firsttime councillors Simon Crawford of the Greens and independent Mia McGregor.

Call to let the dogs run free By Goya Dmytryshchak A Newport woman has started a Change petition to make Market Street Reserve an off-lead dog area after being fined $233 for not restraining her terrier-cross named Friday. Stella Kinsella said the area between Champion and Challis streets was used informally by local dog walkers as an off-leash area, and unsuspecting residents may be unaware they could be fined for breaking a Hobsons Bay council bylaw. “The area that’s in question was not that long ago an empty unused, unloved … virtual paddock,” she said. “In the previous 10 years,

many Market Street residents have worked hard in a communal way to build up the reserve, which was significantly impacted by one of the worst petrol spills in Australia’s history in 2006. We want to make the area an official off-lead dog area because it’s not earmarked for any playground equipment or any schools or any zoning. It’s in a fairly semi-industrial area and perfect for people who would like to give their dogs a bit of a run.” Ms Kinsella said she was fined for having a dog off-lead while planting saplings in the reserve with other members of Friends of Market Street Reserve on National Tree Day. “I was approached by a council ranger during

the planting and told to take the dog inside. I complied immediately but still received a fine.” Hobsons Bay chief executive Chris Eddy said the law required all dogs to be kept on a lead unless in a designated off-leash area. “There are three such areas in Newport: The Warmies, Newport Park and Newport Lakes Reserve,” he said. “Council is developing an open-space strategy for all of Hobsons Bay, which will include consideration of dog off-leash areas to adequately meet community needs. Mr Eddy said that when the petition was received by the council, a report with recommended actions would be prepared.

Snake sightings at Laverton have led to a 1.5-metre tiger snake being removed from the front yard of a Maher Road home. The snake was bagged last Thursday, but resident Andre Smith said he had first seen it in his garden two days earlier. “I’m not sure how long it’s been there, but I saw him Tuesday when I came home from work,” he said. “Wednesday was a cold day. Thursday was nice and sunny and the rocks in my garden were warm. So he’s come out of his hidey-hole. It was in my front yard hiding under my garden bed.” Mr Smith arranged for a snake catcher to relocate his surprise guest. Another woman found a baby tiger snake in her backyard, which backs onto RAAF Williams Base. The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she feared especially for children and pets. Hobsons Bay chief executive Chris Eddy urged people to keep away from snakes and keep dogs on a leash in long-grass areas. “If residents do see a snake, we advise them to stay well away and ensure children and pets also keep their distance,” he said. “In areas of long vegetation, keep dogs on a lead to avoid the likelihood of them getting bitten. If you encounter a snake on your property or in a situation that could be dangerous, contact council on 9932 1000 and we will arrange to have it removed and released into a conservation reserve.” Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act, making it illegal to catch or harm them.

Neighbours ‘teed’ off

Black Hawks take to the sky

By Goya Dmytryshchak Residents in a quiet pocket of Altona next to Kooringal golf course are concerned at the club’s plans for a golf-cart shed which they say will block their picturesque views. Dun Delk Avenue resident Gary Joy said his Cape Cod house was purpose-built in about 1964, with its front door positioned just a few metres from the edge of the course. He is devastated by the club’s plan to build a shed, about 28 metres long and 10 metres wide, outside his front door. “It would block out our view of the golf course from our bedroom and front door, but it would also become the dominant feature from every other main room in our home,” he said. “This industrial-looking shed would be totally out of character with this beautiful residential street and would certainly decrease the value of surrounding properties. “Personally, our family would lose our privacy and security with the introduction of activity from dawn to dusk seven days a week within just a few metres of our front door and windows as golfers collect and put away their buggies.” Mr Joy says he hopes the club will build its shed on a different part of the course with less impact for residents. Kooringal general manager Anthony White said the club sat on 39 hectares of land, which for an 18-hole course was small. “So, space is at a premium,” he said. “The planned cart shed was architecturally drawn and the plans submitted in line with the local planning policy. “Tree and shrub plantings, with an intention to keep the area ‘green’, have been incorporated in the application.” Mr White said the shed would benefit a large

Black Hawk helicopters will be doing high-speed runs close to rooftops this week as part of the army’s urban counter-terrorism training. The Australian Defence Force will conduct excercises until November 13, flying each day until 11.30pm. This will include night flights without lights. In May, people in the Williamstown and Laverton areas expressed alarm after the choppers flew just metres from rooftops in residential areas. At that time, the helicopters were operating out of the Point Cook RAAF base. A Defence spokeswoman said she could not provide specifics of where this month’s flights would take place because the final route depended on the stage of training and weather. “Some flight paths are necessarily lower than normal and unavoidable noise may be noticeable for short periods,” the spokeswoman said. “Residents should not be concerned if they hear or see these activities occurring. “The Australian Defence Force acknowledges that these activities may result in possible disturbances to local residents, but wherever possible the defence force seeks to minimise disruption.” The training, which is a regular event, tests the skills of army personnel in responding to simulated terrorist scenarios around critical infrastructure.

Jail suspended for sex predator By Benjamin Millar A serial child-sex predator has received a suspended jail term after pleading guilty to the sexual abuse of two Braybrook brothers. Bryan Reed, 86, was served a three-year sentence suspended for two years over the buggery of the two young brothers between 1977 and 1980, when they were aged just 11 and nine. The County Court’s Judge Claire Quin took a swipe at Victoria Police for a delay of almost 20 years in prosecuting Reed, who has dozens

of convictions for child molestation stretching over almost 60 years. The court heard that Reed, who is now in a nursing home, had befriended the Braybrook brothers when they were very young, offering them swimming lessons. He was alleged to have fondled the boys in the pool during their lessons, later raping them in his home. When one of the victims told his father of the offence he was “beaten to nearly an inch” of his life. In court, Reed traced his offending back to the physical and sexual violence he experienced at St John’s Home for Boys in Canterbury

between the ages of 6 and 11. “You were lonely, abused, afraid and unhappy as a little boy,” said Judge Quin. Reed had been jailed for two years without parole in 1996 after pleading guilty to 31 acts of indecent assault relating to seven different boys aged between 8 and 12. He had been convicted of indecent assault on four other occasions in 1948, 1969 and 1978. Judge Quin criticised the delay in the latest charges being brought, claiming it affected the sentence she could impose. She said the first victim reported the matter to police 21 years ago as a consequence of

publicity relating to the 1996 court case. “For reasons that remain unknown, no further action was taken by police until another victim went to police to follow up on his original complaint also made in 1996 in 2012,” she said. “This delay between 1996 and now, 20 years, is most unsatisfactory and no legitimate reason for it has been proffered by the prosecution.” Judge Quin said Reed’s offending was “a grave example of this kind of sexual abuse”. However, his health had since deteriorated and he was no longer a threat to children.

The eye-opening trip has given Mr Smith a greater optimism about humanity and a realisation that people around the world share many of the same values and hopes. “If I have an overall take-away around this, it’s the generosity of strangers,” he said. “The average person … just wants to feed their family, wants to give their children a better education and opportunity than they had, and actually cares about their local community.” Mr Smith also returned with a stronger sense that Melbourne’s west is a special place with a community spirit worth embracing. His epic trip will soon be featured in a documentary, featuring Mr Smith’s reflections. “I filmed quite a bit from the plane … we have got some beautiful footage,” he said. “I never turned the camera on myself, so we have made it an interview-based documentary.”

A Williamstown man has been named Australian Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year as the first person to circumnavigate the world by flying boat. Michael Smith, owner of Yarraville’s Sun Theatre, last year realised a decade-long dream completing a six-month solo journey around the globe in his Searey amphibious aircraft Southern Sun. Involving 480 hours of flying, the 210-day journey took in 80 stops at 25 countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, India, England and the US, on its route. The journey began as a quest to retrace the passage of the Qantas Empire Flying Boat from Sydney to London in 1938. A decision to continue and complete a full circumnavigation almost ended in tragedy in a storm off the Canadian coast, but Mr Smith returned safely, and with a new way of thinking about the world around him.

A proud member of the legendary ‘Class of 1938’ will be one of the guests of honour at Victoria University’s upcoming Reunion Day. Wally Hopkins, a graduate of VU predecessor Footscray Technical School, fondly recalls his time at the school and its strong links with his cherished Scouting and YMCA movements. The 92-year-old great grandfather, who lives in West Footscray with wife Evelyn, graduated as an apprentice engineer in 1939. He played in the 1938 premiership-winning football and cricket teams which, along with the victorious baseball team, capped off a never-matched trifecta of premierships. Mr Hopkins recalls the school’s first principal, Charles “Arch” Hoadley – a celebrated Antarctic explorer – took an interest in helping Mr Hopkins keep the scout group running when he took over the group as a teenager after the leaders were called to assist in the war effort. “He said any time I can help you and you want anything, just come and see if I can help you in any way possible,” he said. “He took time in talking to me about scouting so that gave me a great inspiration to say what a great man he was, then his sons joined and so on. “A lot of our senior scout leaders became members of the school as trade people, we flourished from there and that whole relation went on until the passing of Arch Hoadley.” Mr Hopkins received an Honorary Lifetime Service Award at the 2011 VU Alumni Awards, recognising his exceptional service to the local community. He has joined his 1938-39 classmates in being honoured during VU’s Centenary as the university’s No. 1 Ticket Holders. Mr Hopkins said he has been meeting with his former classmates every year since 1988, when they came together for their 50th reunion.

“Three of the original fellows thought what a good idea it would be to catch up for old time’s sake. Ever since then we have been meeting annually. Now the oldest is 94, the youngest is 90. We catch up when we can but there are fewer and fewer of us left.” All former students and staff of VU and predecessor institutions are invited back for Reunion Day at Footscray Park campus on December 3, part of the VU Homecoming celebrations across the weekend of December 2-4. Man jailed for cannabis factory By Goya Dmytryshchak A Point Cook man has been sentenced by the County Court to seven and a half years’ jail for cultivating more than 200 kilograms of cannabis between 2007 and 2013. Salvatore Faro, 53, was found guilty by a jury of cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis at Laverton and Sunshine West. He was also convicted of firearm offences after police seized weapons and a silencer during a raid on his home in Boardwalk Boulevard, Point Cook. Faro must serve five years before being eligible for parole. In March 2013, police executed search warrants at adjoining factories at 77-79 Triholm Avenue, Laverton, where they seized 131 cannabis plants weighting 196 kilograms. The factories, leased to companies associated with Faro, had a hole cut in the shared wall to allow unfettered access between them. There were five separate “grow rooms” with a sophisticated hydroponic system using stolen electricity and water from a fire hydrant. The crops were set up to ensure a regular cycle of about 20 harvests a year. In 2009, Faro handed over the operation of the factory to another man for a $29,000 monthly franchise fee. A company associated with a superannuation fund of which Faro was a trustee then bought a factory in Enterprise Way, Sunshine West. This factory was used to establish a syntheticgrass business that did the occasional turf installation but was used to launder money. Three grow rooms were established at these premises. This factory was sold before police could search it, but documents seized showed that the expected cannabis yield was 24 kilograms valued at $140,000.

Colourful spin on creativity

Witches and wizards whipped up a colourful Halloween welcome to a Yarraville school on Monday for the launch of a new book. Wembley Primary School was transformed as the Wembley Woods School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to celebrate Helga and May Discover the Magic of Colour Colour, a new book by Yarraville artist Catherine Anicic and her mother, Suellen Stubbs. Ms Anicic said the book is the first in a planned series introducing children to the wonderful world of art and creativity. “This one is around colour mixing, and the next will be around shapes,” she said. Written in rhyme and pitched to children aged between three and nine, the book’s storyline follows two witches weary of wearing black seeking more colour in life. Ms Anicic said the idea came when she realised the true wonder of art was not being explored in schools as well as it could be. “We were mixing paint colours with the children, and the look of wonder on their faces made me realise what they were missing out on,” she said. “Our hope with the books is that we can introduce people to art, and kids will love it and use it more.” Ms Anicic said the message ties in with the Kids Are Raw Talent program she created with her mother. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU Now the dust has settled on some hotly-contested election campaigns, the real work of councillors begins …

New faces, and old, vow to stay true

Catherine Cumming, Cuc Lam, Sarah Carter, Gina Huynh, Mia McGregor, Simon Crawford and Martin Zakharov. (Joe Mastroianni)

Maribyrnong’s newly elected councillors have vowed to work together to improve the council’s standing in the community. Independents Gina Huynh and Mia McGregor, Simon Crawford of the Greens and ALP councillor Cuc Lam – returned after a 13-year hiatus – have all welcomed the mix of experience and new voices the new councillor team delivers. At 20 years of age, Ms Huynh in River ward is one of the youngest councillors in the state. She told Star Weekly a key focus will be opening up better communication with residents. “That was definitely one of my main reasons for running – the council isn’t doing very well with communicating with the community,” she said. “I really am going to listen to people’s genuine concerns.”

Ms Huynh hopes being the youngest on council will be her chance to press the need for more focus on supporting young people. Cuc Lam, a Maribyrnong councillor from 2000 to 2003, said its feels good to be back. “I’m still involved with a number of NGOs and I would love to highlight the great work they are doing,” she said. Ms Lam is keen to see a greater focus on core council responsibilities, such as street cleaning, graffiti removal, hard rubbish collection and sport and recreation support. “It’s interesting we have five women and two gentlemen – women are sensible and will work well in harmony.” The Greens’ Simon Crawford, elected to Yarraville ward in first place, said he is pleased the new council has no political majority. “There will be no power players or blocks –

it’s exciting that we can all work together and use each others’ strengths.” His key priorities include improving bicycle infrastructure, getting trucks off residential streets and plastic out of waterways, greater transparency and accountability. Yarraville ward independent Mia McGregor, founder of the West Welcome Wagon charity, said voters have elected “three incredibly progressive councillors” to the ward. “There is such a strong sense of social justice and values, and not leaving anybody in the community behind,” she said, citing truck traffic as high on her agenda, along with the shortage of childcare and kindergarten places. The new council holds its first meeting on November 15. Ben Millar

MY PLACE Altona’s Zoya Martin has photographed the hands of Hobsons Bay workers for an exhibition featured in this month’s Art & Industry Festival. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

What do you like about Altona? I love living close to the water. The dog beach is my favourite place. I often take my labradors, Yushka and Anouk, there. They’re getting older, but still enjoy walking along the beach, meeting other dogs and taking in the beachy scents. What would you change? I feel that Altona lacks a strong sense of community and connectedness. I think events like the Art & Industry Festival will help change that. It will engage and connect the community in creative ways. What’s your favourite cafe and/or eatery? Two Bros on Blyth is good for coffee and pastries, and Gulatis Indian Restaurant makes curries with love.

Talking Hands is a series of large format black and white images, exploring the experiences of Hobsons Bay workers as told by their hands. These workers are from a range of backgrounds and a variety of industries. Some retired years ago, and the stories of their hands at work provide rich insights into our history, and reveal how innovations in industry have changed the way we work. What would people be surprised to know about you? I’m fascinated by dinosaurs. My family lived in Canada for a year when I was seven. Our adopted hometown of Edmonton was once the stomping ground of the Edmontosaurus, an adorable duck-billed dinosaur. Visits to the local dinosaur park captured my imagination. I still feel like a seven year old when I visit the dinosaurs at the museum. Talking Hands is open noon until 4pm weekends from November 19-27 at Woods Street Arts Space, 44 Woods Street, Laverton. See the festival program at artandindustryfestival.com.au

I’ve lived in Hobsons Bay my whole life. Mum was a primary school teacher and has worked at many schools in Hobsons Bay, and my grandfather was a councillor for 25 years and mayor for two, so my family has always been involved in the community. My mum, my sister and I played for the Williamstown Women’s Lacrosse Club, which is celebrating 80 years this year.

Teen puts policy upfront By Charlene Macaulay

Riding monkey bikes illegally may soon end up with the noisy pint-sized two-strokes being crushed, and their riders slugged with fines of up to $3100, if new laws come into force. New legislation, announced in State Parliament last week, will give police more power to tackle the small, low-powered bikes being ridden in public parks and bush reserves. Under current legislation, those caught riding in public can only be fined for operating an unregistered vehicle. Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said police have had reports of monkey bike riders “harassing people” on roads and footpaths for years. “They can cause serious injury or death, and we just don’t want that anymore,” he said. “Let this be a message that our streets aren’t for monkey bikes … they’re dangerous little motorised vehicles.” Premier Daniel Andrews said the new legislation came about after two deaths were caused by the bikes during the past 18 months. “Two families are grieving loved ones because of these wretched things,” he said. “If your own safety isn’t important to you, that’s a choice you make … but the safety of the broader community is important to us.” Victoria police received more than 6000 phone calls about monkey bikes last year. Riding monkey bikes off-road on private property will still be legal.

An Altona teen has taken out a top honour for young people given by Werribee Lions Club. Joshua Cordina was named Werribee Lions Youth of the Year for 2016-17 recently. “I was really quite honoured by it,” he said. “I was proud of the achievement, and really happy to have worked with Lions … it’s great to be able to work together with important community organisations.” The year 11 Suzanne Cory High School student applied for the award on the recommendation of one of his teachers. Joshua had to submit an initial written application and take part in interviews, before presenting a five-minute speech on awards night. The 17-year-old Altona resident dedicated his speech to the need for changes in Australian public health care, and he also answered some impromptu follow-up questions. “It’s something I’m personally interested in; it’s a government policy that I actually feel is a bit relatable to me,” he said. “I could see myself being involved in policy-making, or something like that.” Joshua is the school debating captain and volunteers with Altona lifesaving club over summer as a surf lifesaver. He also runs a community project with friends, called Bedside Buds, which create terrariums out of recycled items, which are then donated to aged care homes. Westbourne Grammar student Alysha Yacono won Werribee Lions public speaker of the year award for a speech about ice cream.

At home at Amarco S

ince moving to Amarco Apartments in Kingsville, Peg Dickson couldn’t be happier being back in her old stomping ground of Melbourne’s buzzing inner west.

From the lovely community feel of the retirement living complex to its easy access to Highpoint shopping centre, Footscray Markets and the CBD, Peg says the 14 months she’s been at Amarco have been wonderful. “I grew up in the Footscray area and went to Geelong Road State School, now Footscray Primary School, and lived in Yarraville and Seddon before moving to North Altona to raise a family more than 50 years ago,” she says. “With the passing of my husband, my daughters living in Dubai and Canberra, and people moving on, the house and the area became too big and isolating, so my daughters suggested I downsize.” Peg and her daughters looked at several retirement villages in the western suburbs, expecting to make a decision in a few years’ time. “As soon as I walked into Amarco,” Peg says, “I felt so comfortable and at home. My daughter and I looked at each other and knew this was the right place.” Aside from enjoying her secure, two-bedroom, ground-floor apartment, Peg loves the vibrant Amarco community. “It’s got everything I want: privacy, an on-site café, concierge and regular social activities,” Peg says. “It’s also central enough for me to visit the shops, and when I need to stop driving there’s public transport to get me around.” Peg now goes to the bowls club once a month for a meal and enjoys outings every week with the other residents. “There are also regular activities here, such as tai chi classes, visits from celebrities and footy clubs, and we get invited to any special activities in the aged-care residence next door. People ask me whether I’m still enjoying it, and I say ‘of course’.” While maintaining independence is key for Peg, she also has peace of mind knowing Uniting AgeWell can provide additional support, if needed, and that there will he help for transition to the adjoining aged-care residence if and when needed. Leg it to the best in cool Levi’s skinny-leg jeans for women and straight-leg for men remain the most popular among Double C Jeanery customers, according to owner Craig Cahoon. But it’s not always jeans that customers look for at this vibrant business, which has been going strong for more than 30 years. “Yes, we have all the top jean brands, such as Lee Riders, Americans, ETO, Rusty and Volcom. In fact, we’re the biggest in the west,” Craig says, “But often customers come in just because they want to say hello to our team. We have seriously good relationships with our customers which, apart from the quality of brands we have on our shelves, is a good reason why we’ve been in business for so long. “One of our team, Casey, recently got a box of chocolates from a customer just because of her service standards – that’s special. And it’s priceless feedback.” Along with chocky-winning Casey (Bradford), who’s assistant manager, the Double C Jeanery crew includes manager Steve Simpson, Maddie, Michael, Kirsten and George. Each is able to offer a personal styling service and know the product range inside out. “Sometimes,” says Craig, “people come in knowing exactly what they want, but if they need advice and guidance in choosing the best look, we can help with ideas. It’s an enjoyable part of our jobs.” The destination store has all the iconic surf brands, such as Stussy and Santa Cruz (nominated as the most popular), Industrie,

Assistant manager Casey Bradford and manager Steve Simpson. (Joe Mastroianni)

Wndrr (a new brand), Rusty, Cross Hatch, Hurley and Mossimo. These labels appear on jeans, jumpers and pants, and there are DC skater shoes in a big colour range at half price (from $35). Men’s Reef shoes come in four styles, and there’s a selection of ladies’ and men’s dress shoes as well. The store also has a well-established reputation for stocking uniforms for about

10 local schools. “The uniforms are top quality and can be significantly cheaper than other stockists. We’re also the exclusive stockist for some schools in the area,” Craig says. And just to add another string to the bow, the store has a small but well-formed range of workwear – boots, safety vests and other items. This market leader offers abundant parking

POTSTICKERS I first heard of potstickers a few years back, when MasterChef contestant Audra made them during a challenge. It was the name that fascinated me more than anything else.

JOSKIN AZIZ FORMER VFL GREAT AND OWNER OF FRANK’S RISTORANTE, ESSENDON NORTH

Potstickers, I soon discovered, are Chinese dumplings, simmered in broth and fried on one side until golden and crisp. Sometimes they stick to the pot, hence the name.

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? JA: If making tea and toast count as cooking, then I’m a top chef. But in all honesty, my cooking skills are not that great. That’s something I leave up to the great chefs I have at my restaurant. FB: What is your signature dish? JA: I can’t go past the seafood platter, although it’s more like a tower than a platter. It’s got barramundi, baby octopus, scallops, oysters, Moreton Bay bugs, mussels and our famous calamari, just to name some of the delicious seafood on it.

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? JA: I’d start with calamari, move on to linguini marinara and finish it off with warm sticky date pudding. FB: What is your favourite food TV show and who is your favourite TV food person? JA: I’m a sweet tooth so my favourite show is Zumbo’s dessert show and I like Jamie Oliver.

Since then, I seem to have been surrounded by dumplings! I remember when they featured heavily at a friend’s 40th birthday party, with whoops of delight as they were handed around. I know people who rave about dumplings in the same way they rave about coffee. And while Asian cuisines are not really my favourites, I adore potstickers and will eat them until I burst. Admittedly, they can be fiddly to make, which is why I was thrilled to come across Mama Chow chicken and chilli jam dumplings in the frozen food section of my local Woolworths. After steaming them as per the directions on the box, I pan fry them on one side to create my own shortcut version of potstickers and serve them with soy sauce and sliced chillis. They’re a good size for potstickers, the filling is generous and juicy and the casing is thin enough that it doesn’t become gluggy when cooked. They make great, easy appetisers.

FB: What is your favourite food? JA: Pasta, pizza and dessert. FB: What is your favourite drink? JA: Anybody that knows me would be able to answer this … red lemonade! FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? JA: Muhammad Ali, Usain Bolt, Tom Hafey, Sener Aziz and Michael Jordan.

“You don’t need a silver fork to eat good food”

FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? JA: Don’t burn it down.

– Paul Prudhomme (late American celebrity chef)

This period-inspired modern house on about 430 square metres is within a four-minute bike ride of Bay Trail West and the waterfront, and a five-minute walk from Williamstown Beach station. Living rooms and bedrooms are laid with polished floorboards, and stepped (painted) cornices and rosettes are period flourishes. There are three bedrooms, but a delightful skylit loft space (with in-roof storage) could make it four. The main bedroom has a window seat, walk-through wardrobes and en suite with double shower. The kitchen, in the centre of living (period-style gas log fire) and dining rooms, has timber cabinetry, granite benches and stainless-steel appliances. Steps head down to a cellar, and there’s heating, cooling and indoor/outdoor speakers. Brick paving extends out under a pergola, and garage and carports provide plenty of parking space.

Imagine life in a glam new townhouse, within five minutes’ walk of foodies’ heaven in a village vibe, taking in a Sun Theatre movie or show. The two light-filled levels here have a white decor palette, juxtaposed with wide-format matt floorboards, and grey carpets and bathroom tiles. Timber stairs head up from the entry to three bedrooms, a chic bathroom and separate toilet. The main bedroom has a walk-through wardrobe and en suite. There’s also a study nook at the entry, and garage access, then there’s a laundry and powder room before the living zone opens out at ground level. There are white stone benchtops and white/veneer combo cabinets in the kitchen, a breakfast bar and glass splashback. Split systems control climate, and a builder’s warranty covers the lot.

First-home buyers, investors and renovators will be interested in this one – a post-World War II house on about 390 square metres with a promising development future, STCA. The house is within an easy stroll to the train station, schools, cafes and shops. Absolutely fine to live in as is, the house has a wonderful renovation canvas of high ceilings with ornate plasterwork, sash windows, picture rails and floorboards throughout. Entry is to a lounge room with gas heater and split-system, connecting with the eat-in kitchen with ample cabinetry and a gas cooker. The laundry, with enclosed toilet, is separate. Three bedrooms share a fresh, all-white bathroom with modern shower fitting over the tub. Near-new fencing rims the large, very neat backyard, and there’s driveway parking space.

This neat-as-a-pin villa unit has a fab locale and will tempt not just investors, but also young singles or couples wanting their first place to snazz up their own way. Downsizers wanting low maintenance and a spare bedroom might also take note. It’s within about five to 10 minutes walking of Footscray central shopping and train station respectively. One of two bedrooms has access to a two-way bathroom and both have built-in wardrobes. A good-sized carpeted lounge room is semi-open to the tiled kitchen-meals zone with split-system. Plenty of cupboards and bench space, wall oven and gas cooktop fit out the kitchen. The meals area opens to a leafy courtyard with paving and verdant lawn. Gas central heating and a garage plus driveway space are other drawcards.

the kerbside. Beyond the front door, it just gets better. White walls show off the high ceilings with stepped plaster cornices and intricate ceiling roses also on show. Ornate cast-iron fireplaces, dado rails, sash windows with shutters, deep skirts, timber floors and original door knobs and light switches are other features of its era. Four gorgeous bedrooms range along the wide entrance hall, which has a beautiful corbelled arch midway. There is also a formal lounge room in the main part of the house.

With a pretty outlook, the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. Another, with a Victorian fireplace and surround, opens onto the side garden. The main bathroom has subway tiling, a freestanding tub, brass tapware, a frameless-glass shower and timber vanity. At hall’s end the house opens out to reveal its centrepiece – the cooks’ domain – a country style classic with plenty of timber-topped white cabinetry, and including contemporary glass and tiled splashbacks and stainless-steel appliances. Then comes the bit out of the box – there’s free-flowing access between indoors and out at the rear, with double doors opening onto the return verandah, an outdoor eating set-up and a beautifully landscaped back garden. If we made a list of the most desirable aspects of living in South Williamstown this magnificent Victorian Queen (circa 1880 and previously owned by Mayor John Morgan) would satisfy many if not all the best attributes sought but so rarely acquired. The evocative charm of the Victorian facade, return veranda and bay windows maintains the beauty of yesteryear, whilst providing for spacious, up to date family accommodation with a sprawling, verdant rear garden. The front section of this large home maintains the gracious period aesthetics that we cherish, whilst the roomy extension offers a modern lifestyle. There’s ample room in the garden for a large pool (STCA) with excellent access via the side lane that serves the triple garage. Entertainers will delight in the huge kitchen with butler’s pantry and the indoor/outdoor aspect of the casual living zones. Hobsons Bay City Council is proposing to rename the western section of Ross Road, Altona North situated between Chambers Road and Millers Roads to Butler Road, as indicated on the attached plan. This proposal is a result of the recent development of Millers Junctions and the construction of nine warehouses. The current street addressing allocated to Ross Road commences on the eastern side of Millers Road, as indicated on the attached plan. The current numbering of Ross Road would result in a duplication of street addressing. In accordance with Schedule 10 Clause 5 of the Local Government Act 1989, Council is required to ensure that properties are easily identifiable by Emergency Services, statutory authorities, utilities and the general public. Accordingly, Council proposes to rename the western section of Ross Road, Altona North to Butler Road, Altona North. This name has been selected from Council’s list of approved street names. Council is inviting feedback prior to finalising this proposal. If you have any suggestions or comments that you would like Council to consider, to please forward these Hobsons Bay City Council, PO Box 21, Altona 3018. The closing date for submissions will be 30 days from the date of this notice. If you require further clarification please contact Patricia Curcuruto, Property Services Officer, on 9932 1273 or via email pcurcuruto@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes a punt on an old Aussie favourite ‌ Pokie venues are not a natural habitat for Consider The Sauce. In fact, if memory serves, this is only the second such story in CTS history. Sunshine RSL is very much part of the Sunshine central area with which we are so familiar. But it’s kinda tucked away in a back street, so is easy to overlook. Yet, despite its nearness to the hustle and bustle of Hampshire and Devonshire roads, this is like another world. And never, or almost never, the twain shall meet. But I feel immediately comfortable and at home – once I pass the obligatory sign-in procedures. I tune out the electronic gambling, and the garish lighting, and take in the scene – I’m pretty sure I’m the only non-regular here. I’m pleased to see that, aside from a few regulation-style pasta dishes on the specials list, the food is straight-up pub tucker. Why bother with a try at curries or wok food when there is so much of them to be had nearby for so little money? The prices seem fair, kept down perhaps by the fact there’s no table service – meals are ordered, delivered and picked up from the kitchen servery, which I actually like as it lends a cheerful participatory air to proceedings. Like me, it seems, about half the customers are here for the Sunday roast special. And for $10, I have only the most modest expectations.

ROAST PORK AND VEGETABLES

So I am knocked and otherwise delighted by the meal I proceed to consume. The serve is big ‌ always a good sign, and the pork – there’s beef also available – is tender. There’s plenty of good gravy too. The broccoli aside, all the vegetables are roasted – this is most excellent, as we know of another place that does $10 Sunday roasts and all the veg except for spuds are steamed in order to keeps costs down. I wish, just a little, I had asked for pumpkin to be excluded – there’s a stack of it – and had more of other vegie choices on offer. But overall, I could hardly be happier.

55 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 2, 2016

SPORT Women’s football academy takes flight The development of women’s football continues apace, with the Western Jets recently announcing their inaugural Youth Girls Academy. The academy will run over the summer months, and will also coincide with the first season of the Women’s AFL from February to April. With 75 players aged 15 to 18 invited to be part of the academy it is a significant investment from the Jets. Talent manager Shane Sexton is excited about the growth of the club and the women’s game. “With the women’s side coming on board we think we’ll have about 500 families come through the Western Jets,” Sexton said. “We’re already identifying boys at 14 and bringing them through the program, and it’s eventually going to be the same for the women, which is exciting for the growth of the game. We want to see all 75 girls that come into the

academy reach their full potential, whether that’s playing AFL, VFL, or local club footy, it’s about creating opportunity for growth and development for everyone that walks through our doors.” The academy has been in the pipeline for some time, with AFL Victoria pushing to develop a pathway for junior female footballers to work their way through to the new national competition. The plan is for the academy to eventually run over the winter months. “At the moment it will run in line with the AFL Women’s comp over the summer time through to April,” Sexton said. “It’s a 12 team competition, with all the TAC Cup regions having their own academy, the idea being that the players will have our program over summer and then go back to domestic footy at VFL or club level over the winter time.

“I don’t think it will be far down the track that we have a full season of AFL Women’s footy and TAC Cup footy over the winter months.” The Jets also announced Bridget Barker as their head coach for the academy. Barker was last year announced as the AFL’s woman of the year in the emerging leaders category. She also works at North Melbourne as the sport and recreation co-ordinator at The Huddle. “Bridget’s been involved for awhile, both as a player and now as a coach, so when we were looking for a coach it was pretty apparent that she was well placed to take on the role,” Sexton said. “She had everything we were looking for really so it was a pretty easy appointment.” The squad had its first meeting last week, with the program set to kick off on November 10. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ With Melbourne Cup Day now run and won, most footy teams will be heading into pre-season at various parks, gyms, pools and wherever else they can find space in the coming weeks. The crossover of the sporting seasons really puts enormous pressure on our ovals and grounds, and when you add in the rapidly growing population, expansion of existing suburbs and establishment of new ones, the demand and need for local sporting venues is reaching critical proportions. In this day and age suburban clubs can co-exist but strains have appeared in recent years between cricket and footy clubs, especially when one is a superior revenue spinner. The higher up the sports ladder you go the more difficult it is for semi-elite level codes to share a facility. This is a big challenge for future development of sports and must be addressed now or the consequences in the future will have a very damaging effect, at every level of sport from grass roots up. ■ Spent time with former Bulldog Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney last week in his regular SEN radio spot, which I was hosting. He was very relaxed after spending some time in Bali at Ryan Griffen’s wedding. A couple of interesting things came from the conversation. He said there was more to the story of Griffen leaving the Bulldogs, and one day all will be revealed. He would not elaborate, except to say it was not his story to tell, and he will leave that to Ryan to reveal when the time is right. He also said if he does play footy in 2017 it will be at the Spotswood Football Club in the WRFL. McLean Reserve is close to home and where his son currently plays in the under 10s. I am sure Spotswood senior coach Anthony Eames is keen to get that commitment in writing as soon as he can.

By Ewen McRae Williamstown junior squash star Dylan Molinaro is quickly rising through the ranks of his sport, recently finishing runner-up at the Australian Junior Championships and playing a key part in Victoria’s third placing. Molinaro, 14, first took up the sport four years ago, following his father Frank into the game and quickly impressing with his natural abilities and fast learning. Within a year he was playing in adult pennant competitions, and was soon playing in state tournaments as he began to rise up the junior ranks of the state. “It all came to me pretty naturally,” Molinaro said. “I started playing competitions when I was 12, and played in the Victorian tournaments which were good fun. I was playing against men at 11 and some were easier than others, but some were pretty hard.” Molinaro steadily built through the ranks of the Victorian circuit, but his biggest result came

at the recent Australian Junior Championships which he entered as the fifth seed in the under 15 boys category. He cruised through the first two rounds without dropping a game, but in the quarter-finals he came up against number one seed Remi Young from Western Australia. The match turned into a five game epic, with Molinaro coming back from 2-1 down to win the final two games and progress to the semi-finals. “It was pretty amazing,” Molinaro said. “It was really hard, but winning that match was pretty cool. It was probably the best game I’ve played. I took a lot of confidence out of that and I thought maybe I could win the tournament.” Although Molinaro progressed to the final with a 3-0 win in the semi, he came up short against number two seed Wesley Dyer despite winning the first two games. While he missed out on winning the championship, Molinaro was named the fairest and best male player at the tournament, taking

56 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 2, 2016

home the MC Hazel Award along with a third placing overall for the Victorian team. “That was pretty cool,” he said. “I like the whole Victorian squash community, so it was good to do so well with them.” Molinaro’s squash received a big boost at the start of the year when he was awarded a scholarship to Kooyong Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, giving him access to some of the best courts and coaches in the state. “It’s good to see how they play, and to get coached by the coach there, Malcolm McClarty, it’s really important with the drills and games we do, and also just talking about different aspects of the game. “The big goal I guess would be to become a top 10 player in the world, and definitely Commonwealth Games. Hopefully if I can keep my training up I can reach both those goals.” There is also the potential for Molinaro to head to the US to pursue squash, with Ivy League schools such as Harvard and Yale competing in the sport.

■ One of the joys of the job I have been doing all my life is meeting and interviewing famous people. Truth is some are boring, some are not pleasant and difficult, while others are just a delight. In the past few weeks the racing people I have met have been tremendous. Ciaron Maher, David Hayes, Glynn Schofield, Chris Waller, James Cummings and Darren Weir all have been accommodating and happy to have a chat. Former Geelong star Jimmy Bartel popped in last week and you could not meet a more down to earth, decent bloke. It was a pleasure to interview him.

Experience and partnerships set the tone for Dogs A vital century from veteran Footscray Edgewater opener Greg Munro laid the platform for a massive total for the Dogs as they travelled to play Melbourne Uni in Premier Cricket on Saturday. In the first two-day clash of the season, Munro showed his years of experience in sharing two 100-run partnerships at the top of the order as he powered to 121 off 172 balls. The Dogs declared late in the day at 6-360. Melbourne Uni won the toss and sent the Dogs in, but was soon regretting its decision as Munro and Matthew Underwood (47) opened

with a 109-run stand before Underwood was run out. What could have been a momentum killer became anything but as Hayden Butterworth joined Munro in the middle for a 101-run partnership to take a firm grip on the contest. Munro dominated the partnership as he raced to his hundred and beyond, before Bushrangers leggie Fawad Ahmed struck to send him back to the pavilion. However it didn’t get any easier for the home side with Dean Russ entering the fray and smashing his way to 67. He lost Butterworth

along the way, but not before the number three had raised his bat for 51 off 126 balls. Dogs skipper Dylan Kight also got among the runs with a rapid 41, and soon after his dismissal he decided to declare to give his bowlers three overs at the Students top order. While they were unable to break through with a wicket – Uni finishing on 0-14 – the day clearly belonged to the Dogs. In the second XI, it was an almost identical story with the sides reversed. Footscray Edgewater won the toss at Merv Hughes Oval and sent the Students in, and then

watched them plunder 5-359 before declaring late in the day. Ashley Armstrong (2-31) was the only multiple wicket taker on the day, as Tom Tudor anchored the innings for the visitors with an aggressive 116. The Dogs had a tricky six overs to negotiate late in the day and were unable to emerge unscathed as Armstrong (1) was trapped in front by Aaron Boyle early to leave the hosts 1-20 at stumps. Maribyrnong footballer Stephanie Elias has been selected as one of Victoria’s best Under 15 female indigenous and multicultural players, following a successful 2016 AFL Female Diversity Championships last month. Elias was one of 11 Victorians selected in either the Woomeras (Indigenous players) or Medley (Multicultural) teams at the conclusion of the inaugural championships in Shepparton, with Elias named in the Medley squad. Elias will now join 30 of the best multicultural players from across Australia as part of a national representative team.

Baseball

Newport continued an impressive week of results on Sunday with a 6-4 win over Preston in division one Vic Summer League baseball action. After a shut-out against Fitzroy last weekend and a tense draw with powerhouse Essendon mid-week, Newport was strong all day at Preston to take its third win of the season and move into third on the ladder. In division two, Williamstown fell short of Bonbeach in an entertaining and fun-filled contest. The 7-5 scoreline featured some strong hitting throughout the day, but the loss means Williamstown slips down to seventh on the table after six games.

Bowls

Williamstown wins big

Yarraville Footscray slipped to their third loss from the opening four rounds of the Premier Bowls season on Saturday, going down to Melbourne in a tense contest. While the rinks were split evenly, Melbourne was able to take the win with superior shots to walk away with a 14 (72) - 4 (68) victory. Altona fared better in its clash with Croydon as it took a comfortable 16 (87) -2 (60) win. Altona now sit third on the ladder, while Yarraville Footscray is struggling in eighth place.

Craig Sheedy hits one through the offside during his crucial innings for Williamstown on Saturday. (Luke Hemer)

Williamstown grabbed its first win of the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association East-West season on Saturday, proving far too strong for Bayswater at Williamstown Cricket Ground. While Bayswater got first use of a flat pitch and a fast outfield, it struggled to make the most of it as Williamstown’s bowlers bowled a tight line to restrict the visitors scoring to 8-146. Williamstown captain Brent McMinn said he always thought it would prove too few. “I was looking at the pitch before the toss and I thought if we batted we would need at least 200,” McMinn said. “It was very flat, no demons in the wicket, and the outfield was very quick so it sets the scene for a big score. “It’s a credit to our bowlers who all bowled with discipline, especially Patrick O’Malley who’s spell probably won us the game, to be honest.” O’Malley bowled a vital spell through the

middle of the innings on his way to 2-9 off nine overs, while Bayswater batsman Angus Adamson (48 not out) was the only visiting player to make the most of their start.

‘‘

Hopefully we can keep the momentum going this week - Brent McMinn

’’

In reply, Williamstown lost both openers for single figures but was soon out of trouble when McMinn and Craig Sheedy joined forces to continue the chase. The pair put on 108 before McMinn was dismissed for a match-winning 64, leaving Sheedy (46 not out) and Mitchell Streiff (4 not out) to finish the job with nearly 13 overs to spare. “We did it pretty easily in the end,” McMinn said. “It was pretty simple really. Hit the bad ball and keep rotating the strike, you do that well and the runs tend to come.

“It’s good to have the firsts off for their first win, and four senior wins for the day is great for the club. “Hopefully we can keep the momentum going this week against Box Hill and keep the good results flowing.” In other games, Yarraville suffered a heartbreaking one-run loss to Balwyn to remain winless this season. Balwyn batted first on its home deck and was dismissed for 158 with three overs left. Akshat Buch was the pick of the bowlers with 4-26. In reply, Yarraville slipped to 4-27 before rallying to 6-141 through skipper Nathan Allen (73) and Buch (30) to give itself a shot at victory. However the last four batsmen managed just nine runs between them as the visitors were bowled out on the final ball of the day for 157, one run short of a tie. Altona was far too strong for Croydon in their clash, with Altona’s 5-156 proving far too many for the home side who were dismissed for just 93.
