Hill plans slammed By Serena Seyfort

Dance dream a step closer

(Joe Mastroianni)

The long-awaited vision for Sunbury’s treasured Jacksons Hill has been labelled a “disaster” by a Sunbury residents group. The draft master plan, released by the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) for public feedback last Thursday, proposes space for a potential secondary school, housing, a creative precinct, community spaces, retirement living and a main street. The design is based around nine distinct areas, with a civic and cultural spine running north-south through the area. But despite multiple community consultations and years of lobbying, the Sunbury Residents Association has described the plans as a “disaster”. Vice president Trevor Dance said the group was concerned by the plan’s lack of detail. He said residents were also concerned by the residential plans on the site’s east and west, as earlier discussions had agreed the site should be for community use. “The area as we know it will be hidden away into suburbia,” he said. Sunbury resident Louise Attard, who attended last week’s release, said “very few people” remained at the session beyond halfway. “People seemed to be despondent and disappointed,” she said. Ms Attard said the residential aspects of the proposal did not match community desire for infrastructure. A village green is proposed for the centre, surrounded by shared spaces for community use. To the green’s south, a pedestrian-priority main street is planned where retail and food opportunities could be established. Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Speciality School has been allocated room to expand, with the possibility of a creative hub included. Accessibility is planned to be improved across the entire site, with Circular Drive to allow two-way traffic and bus services. The former Sunbury mental asylum has remained largely vacant since Victoria University stopped using it in 2009. Planning Minister Richard Wynne last year commissioned a community-focused master plan in consultation with residents. Hume council acting director, planning and development Michael Sharp said the council is reviewing the draft master plan and will be making a submission at its council meeting in February. A Gisborne teenager will see her work performed at Albert Park’s Gasworks Theatre this month after winning a dance choreography competition. Seventeen-year-old Estelle Brown placed first in the under-18 category of Dance Architect’s 2016 competition with a contemporary dance work she choreographed and taught to five dancers. Her work, Promontory Promontory, will be presented as part of the Dance Architect Award Winners Season, on the evenings of December 14, 15 and 16. Seven of her fellow students from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAPA) will fly over to perform the work. Brown said she had elected not to dance herself, as she wanted to see the dance evolve from the audience’s perspective. The Gisborne local is living in Perth while she works for a bachelor of arts (dance) at WAPA. The young dancer has many dreams for the future, saying her studies are “the first stepping stone” to becoming “a fully developed artist”. She hopes to be a professional dancer and choreographer. Brown grew up with a keen interest in dance, inspired by her dancer mother and her brother, who is a professional dancer and choreographer. New beds for Malmsbury centre By Serena Seyfort Construction is scheduled to start at Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct in March next year after the state government announced it was “rebuilding the entire youth justice system”. The government will expand the Malmsbury facility, making room for 32 new secure beds, and a new fence will be built to improve security.

The new security measures are in response to inmates escaping the centre in March and January this year. Police found two detainees not far away from the centre in March and 15 inmates fled the premises during a riot in January. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos said the state government was rebuilding Victoria’s youth justice system. “We’re expanding beds at our youth

justice facilities and improving security to meet growing demand and help keep the community safe,” Ms Mikakos said.

The works will be delivered as part of a $79.5 million package which will include the expansion of the Parkville Youth Justice Precinct to incorporate 36 new secure beds. The additional 32 beds at Malmsbury are expected to be in place by late next year. The state government said a community advisory group would be established to allow community input regarding the works.

Paws to take care of your pet As the temperature heats up and the festive season nears, Australia’s largest not-for-profit animal hospital has offered tips for keeping pets happy and healthy. Lort Smith head of hospital services Dr Russell Harrison has advised pet owners to particularly keep a watch over their four-legged family members in the next month. Multiple bowls of water are necessary for animals on hot days, according to the vet, and owners should consider having the fur clipped on their long-haired pets. To prevent snake bites and grass seeds getting caught in pets’ skin and ears, Dr Harrison has urged pet owners to avoid letting pets walk through long grass. In the lead-up to Christmas, owners should beware of dogs getting food that could be damaging to their health, such as chocolate. “Be careful wrapping food as Christmas presents under the tree,” Dr Harrison said. “Your pet dog probably won’t wait ‘till Christmas morning to get into them!” He said the hospital always saw injured pets in the new year, due to pets being panicked by New Year’s Eve fireworks. “If you are leaving your dog home on a night when fireworks are scheduled, consider shutting the windows and leaving the TV or radio on to provide some calming white noise. “Make sure your pet is microchipped so if they do escape, you will be reunited more quickly.”

Santa ready to drop in The Sunbury community has its very own Santa, and this Father Christmas fundraises for sick kids while bringing joy to locals. This December, for the third year in a row, Sunbury father Sean Balchin will spend his evenings after work surprising children with a visit from Santa. Mr Balchin offers ‘Santa Home Visits for the Kids’ between 6-8.30pm on weeknights in return for a minimum donation of $5 to the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH). He has already been booked out for special Christmas morning visits this year. The man in red brings gifts of lolly bags and toys, as well as Christmas cheer. The father of two buys some of the treats out of his own pocket, and others have been donated by local businesses. One hundred per cent of the funds he collects go to the RCH. Last year Mr Balchin raised $9000 for the RCH from 140 home visits, and this year he hopes to hit the $10,000 mark. Mr Balchin doesn’t have a personal connection to the RCH and said his children had always been lucky with health, but he believes “Christmas is all about the kids”. Woodend Playgroup was commended for its commitment to helping families connect with one another and the environment.

Playgroup Victoria chief executive Danny Schwarz described Woodend Playgroup as “a bustling, vibrant and eco-friendly centre”. Fire season safety warning By Serena Seyfort

CFA District 02 operations manager Bill Johnstone said forecasts indicated the area would experience an above-average fire season this summer. While burning-off is banned, he said it was still important for landowners to clean up properties to minimise fire risks. Green waste can be disposed of for free at Macedon Ranges council’s waste transfer stations. The council is doing its bit to prepare for the fire season, with roadside slashing works and fire prevention inspections well under way.

With what is predicted to be an above-average fire season looming, the fire danger period has started in Macedon Ranges and Sunbury. Fire restrictions came into effect on December 4, meaning burn-offs and open fires are banned without a written permit. Anyone caught lighting a fire without a permit can face penalties of more than $21,600 and/or 12 months imprisonment. Restrictions also apply to the use of chainsaws, incinerators and farm machinery.

Almost 400 fire prevention notices have so far been issued to Macedon Ranges residents, forcing residents to resolve, or pay to have resolved, fire risks on their properties. In the event of a bushfire that requires residents to evacuate their homes, the council will open an emergency relief centre with support and accommodation. The council is encouraging residents to stay informed throughout the bushfire season via radio, the VicEmergency Hotline (1800 226 226) and the VicEmergency website (emergency.vic.gov.au).

The council has also advised people to drink plenty of water, never leave people or pets in vehicles, plan ahead and keep cool on hot summer days. Residents can escape the summer heat at air-conditioned libraries in Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend. During normal operating hours, the libraries offer free water, kids toys, wi-fi and internet access. Electoral revamp likely Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are likely to find themselves belonging to different federal electorates once the Victorian federal redistribution is complete. Many of the 67 suggestions submitted to the Victorian Redistribution Committee advocate a reshuffle of the towns situated in and around Sunbury and Macedon Ranges. The two areas, which currently sit across the electorates of Bendigo and McEwen, are united within one electorate in the plans offered by most of these submissions. The National and Liberal parties have proposed moving Woodend, Riddells Creek, Macedon, Kyneton and Heathcote out of the Bendigo electorate and into McEwen. According to the Nationals’ submission, these smaller regional communities have characteristics distinct from Bendigo.

The Australian Labor Party has suggested moving the lower parts of Macedon Ranges into McEwen. A new electorate based around Sunbury and Melton, called Fraser, has been proposed by the Greens. Macedon Ranges would also be encompassed within Fraser. Victorian Redistribution Committee chairman Tom Rogers said population growth would likely lead to significant changes to existing electoral boundaries. Sunbury has experienced rapid population growth, going past 40,000 residents last year, up from 34,721 in 2006, according to the bureau of statistics. The Australian Electoral Commission will release the redistribution report in April next year for public feedback. Serena Seyfort

Golden day for La Bonta

Indoor sports hub plans set to go public

By Serena Seyfort An Italian restaurant in Kyneton is home to central Victoria’s best chef and best contemporary dining experience, according to the 2017 Golden Plate Awards. La Bonta Kyneton was also honoured as having the best menu of local foods in the region and the most outstanding front-of-house person, after being nominated for the awards by the public then judged and scored unknowingly on two occasions.

The judges said the restaurant’s quality of meals and value for money were “exceptional”. They identified La Bonta’s strengths as its “authentic Italian atmosphere and cuisine” and “customer service that adds value to the occasion”. “Kyneton, it seems, is back to its former glory days,” the judges commented. After being scored by the mystery critics, the restaurant was invited to enter a chef in the Peter Watson Memorial Cook-off. La Bonta’s 28-year-old sous-chef David Robson competed in the contest in the absence of head chef Tim Austin. Mr Robson narrowly missed out on the state title, being honoured as the best chef in the region. He said he was very humbled to win the award. “It was totally unexpected,” he said. “It gave me the chance to show myself how much hard work can pay off.” The sous-chef has been working at La Bonta

After months of consultation, a draft feasibility study for a Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub is expected to be released to the public early in the new year. Project consultants from Otium Planning Group, appointed by Macedon Ranges council, have met local sports clubs over the past three months to discuss a vision for the indoor sports courts. Representatives from local volleyball, netball, futsal, basketball, squash and badminton groups have made up the Indoor Sports Reference Group that has been dealing with the consultants. Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub spokesperson Megan Condron said the reference group was “really happy” with the recommendations provided by Otium Planning Group following the consultation process. In the coming weeks, the consultants will take the draft feasibility study to the council for approval. The study, which analyses current use, future demand, concept plans, costs, locations and design approaches for indoor sports courts, is then expected to be released for public comment in January or February. Jingle bells are ringing

This December, the Third Sunbury Scouts are selling fresh Christmas trees to fundraise for their group, as they have done for more than 10 years. Trees can be picked up from the Max Gifford Scout Hall, Miller Street, Sunbury, from 9am-3.30pm on Saturday, December 9, or they can be ordered online and delivered to your home. The sale of the trees is the group’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Youth members and volunteer leaders and families run the tree-drive to help fund Third Sunbury Scouts’ leader training, new equipment and hall maintenance. Tree prices start at $50. Delivery is available in Sunbury for $10, and in Bulla, Gisborne, Riddells Creek and Wildwood for $20. Trees can be pre-ordered by calling Jason 0412 528 274 or John 0403 061 568 and by visiting the website www.3rdsunburyscouts. org.au/christmas-trees The team will even help with disposing of trees after the festive season on January 6, 2018 for $10-20 depending on location.

It’s bound to feel like Christmas has come early next week when the Gisborne Christmas Festival takes over Gardiner Reserve. Promising fun for all ages, there will be a free jumping castle, animal farm, face-painting, hair braiding, sporting activities and even some free glitter tattoos. Two local bands will perform throughout the night, and families are being encouraged to bring a picnic rug, sit back and enjoy what’s on offer at market and food stalls, coffee and ice cream vans. If you’re into some hair-raising fun there’ll be carnival rides. The annual Christmas parade will take place at 6.30pm, and fireworks will bring the celebrations to a close at 9.15pm. The Gisborne Christmas Festival is being co-ordinated by the Gisborne and Districts Lions Club. The festival will be held on Friday, December 8, from 4.30-9.30pm at Gardiner Reserve, Gisborne.

Calls to stem gambling harm

By Serena Seyfort From receiving an international acting award to stunt horse riding on screen, Gisborne’s William Lee is enjoying quite a ride. Lee starred in The Legend of Ben Hall as character John Dunne, and was the film’s executive producer. At the 50th annual Houston International Film Festival (Worldfest), he was named best supporting actor for his performance. Lee, who grew up in Gisborne and Bullengarook, said he felt at home filming the bushranger movie in the Macedon Ranges. Lee rode competitively with Macedon Pony Club and the Australian Novelty Racing Association as a child. He said his horse-riding skills meant he was able to perform his own stunts while acting. He recently played a horse handler and rider in two episodes of Lawless – The Real Bushrangers, a Foxtel television documentary series, and can be seen next in Mutt, a film still in production about underground dog fighting. The former Braemar College and Gisborne Secondary College student said he respected how his Macedon Ranges upbringing had helped him with his acting career. “I’m pretty proud to say I come from a small country town like Gisborne,” he said. Lee is working on writing his own film, which he hopes to produce and direct. “I think you have to be a jack of all trades in this industry,” he said. Lee this week walked the red carpet alongside some of the biggest names in film and television at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards.

Ways to reduce gambling’s significant impact on Hume residents have been raised at a community forum in Sunbury. The joint Hume council and Sunbury Community Health event last Tuesday included a screening of the documentary Ka-Ching! Pokie Nation and was followed by a Q and A session. Alliance for Gambling Reform campaign manager Kelvin Thomson sat on the discussion panel, alongside gambling researcher and Deakin University associate professor Samantha Thomas and ReSPIN Gambling Speakers Awareness Group community educator Gabi Byrne. Mr Thomson outlined the severe harm being caused by gambling in Hume. He said an average of more than $289,000 was put into gaming machines in Hume each day in the 2016-17 financial year. Reducing gaming venue operating hours and raising awareness of gambling as a public health issue, like alcohol and tobacco, were among suggestions raised to combat the issue. Hume council outlined its interest in establishing a community working group on gaming. Anyone interested in being involved should contact Nina Stephens on 9205 2200. The council’s draft Health and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2021 includes working to decrease the area’s electronic gambling losses by 20 per cent by the year 2025.

MY PLACE Diana Abruzzi founded the International Women’s Federation of Commerce and Industry in 1992, the world’s first Chamber of Commerce for women. The Woodend resident is planning to introduce a regional chapter of IWFCI to the local community. She speaks with Serena Seyfort. What’s your connection to Macedon Ranges?

It’s all yet to be identified as to what shape that will take but I’ll certainly be working with as many people as I can.

I’ve lived in Woodend for nearly five years now. I moved here because I wanted to start thinking about the future and a change into my elderly years while I was still fit and able. My family have been at Mount Macedon for many years. When they invited me to look at Woodend for that second stage of my life I immediately fell in love with it. I’ve never been happier, nor more content, than when I am here. When doing a quite large renovation to the house, I included a big office where I could work from instead of travelling to the city every day. I just love looking over the lawns from my office window, it is so peaceful.

Do you have a favourite place locally? Well, I keep going to Milkos! (The Milko) It’s a cafe in Woodend. It’s great for meetings and coffees in a relaxed environment. If there was anything you could change in the local area, what would it be?

I am the founder and international chair of the International Women’s Federation of Commerce and Industry (IWFCI). I started as the first International Chamber of Commerce for women in 1992 with 60 business cards. We immediately proceeded to develop branches and affiliates in over 12 countries across the Asia Pacific and beyond, opening the trade routes for women across the region, enabling women in business to penetrate new markets. Are you looking at applying any of your work locally? I recently just finished all my house renovations and thought ‘it’s time’. I really got to know

(Joe Mastroianni)

You do a lot of your work from home, tell us about it.

what was happening in the local region here. I was meant to speak at a Macedon Ranges council networking lunch last month but it was washed out with the heavy rains. We are now working with the council for another function in Macedon in the new year, where we will bring many of our very successful international women traders as speakers.

We’re currently looking at starting a regional IWFCI chapter here in the Macedon Ranges. We would very much like to have a collaborative working relationship with other women’s business groups in the area , where the presidents of each group could sit down with us and discuss where we could be of assistance to them.

I’ve noticed what’s happening with Gisborne and Kyneton and they’re losing their character a little bit. We’re a regional country area, we need to keep its current character. Woodend is unique. I believe we need a master plan for the area, without it nothing of substance will really be achieved . Many people are coming up with ideas and spending a lot of money to deliver proper presentations to the council but they’re not getting too much leverage for it. A master plan is essential to go forward if you want to create jobs here and to entice people to develop and invest into the district, a master plan is essential so there is no confusion in how we see the future of Woodend and it shows good leadership by the council. Being in Woodend I have seen an enormous potential. Woodend needs to be a tourist destination. There are opportunities here waiting to be worked on. My mind goes crazy walking around the streets thinking what could be done.

Rita Timpano and Sue Glavan. (Mark Wilson)

For 10 years, Sue Glavan managed Dreamzone in Sunbury as if she owned it.

“We’re still like an ‘old school’ country store when it comes to service,” Sue says.

Sue was committed to the factory-direct bedding store’s success in all ways – long before she became the true owner three and a half years ago and renamed the store DreamZzz Luxury Bedding.

“Looking after customers’ needs is rewarding, especially when you know you can provide them with a mattress to help not just with a good night’s sleep, but with all kinds of issues – medical and general health to the purely recreational.”

“I know the business inside out, so I knew I could take it on,” Sue says.

The store stocks a large range of Australian-made mattresses, bases and bedheads, along with pillows, toppers and protectors. DreamZzz offers custom-made mattresses.

“I also have faith in our product and the level of quality we provide for so many different kinds of customers. “I’ve been a local for 33 years now … putting back into the local community and neighbouring towns is a high priority of DreamZzz, and one we take a lot of pride in. Sue recruited Rita Timpano three years ago to join her at DreamZzz. Rita also demonstrates the high level of expertise and customer service that Sue prides herself on.

Sue and Rita also specialise in fitting out caravans, campers and trucks, as well as supplying hotels and motels. DreamZzz Luxury Bedding, Store 8, 75 Vineyard Road, Sunbury. Opens 10am-5pm Monday-Friday and 10am-3.30pm Saturday. Inquiries: 9740 7222 or visit www.dreamzzzluxurybedding.net.au

Vineyard Medical’s superhero effort raises money for kids cancer charity

PROVIDING EXCELLENT EYE CARE FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Doctors dressed as Batman and Superman and nurses working in Cinderella costumes – that was the scene at Vineyard Medical Centre recently as the Sunbury-based medical centre hosted its inaugural fundraiser for The Kids Cancer Project.

Affordable cataract surgery

Centre manager Sally says the fundraiser happened almost by chance when a staff member learned of the charity while looking for a focus subject for their patient newsletter.

Bulk Bill eye injections

“Every month, I like to do a focus piece in the newsletter,” Sally says. “As it was childhood awareness month at the time, our receptionist Kate came across the charity and thought it was an opportunity to give back to such a worthy cause. “We decided we should do a dress-up day, and quickly the staff and doctors, as well as all the allied health practitioners, got into the spirit and came to work on September 28 in full costume. It was a great day. “You had to donate $5 to participate. But, of course, many donated more. And we had donation tins in the clinic through the day – all were filled up. “The best part of the day was seeing patients walking in and a huge smile growing across their faces as soon as they saw their caring doctors brandishing their capes and masks,” Sally says.

The Vineyard Medical Centre crew show off their very best superhero outfits. (Supplied)

A Facebook post advertising photo opportunities for clients with their favourite superstars for a gold coin donation made the centre busy at times. “The Kids Cancer Project was really happy and overwhelmed with what we raised,” Sally says. “We sent in our photos, which it shared on its own Facebook page.” Vineyard Medical Centre is a cross-disciplinary medical centre with 12 general practitioners, as well as an obstetrician/gynaecologist and plastics, orthopaedic and general surgeons and many other services. There are plans to further extend the centre’s services in coming years.

Holistic management of glaucoma

“We are always growing and adapting to what our patients need,” Sally says.

Comprehensive oculoplastic surgery

The Kids Cancer Project is a national, independent charity committed to funding leading science to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for childhood cancer.

The sparkling house has four fitted bedrooms, including the main with walk-in robe and spacious dual-basin en suite with an oval spa. Surrounding the kitchen are three living zones – lounge-dining, family-meals and rumpus. An integrated alfresco area links with extensive paving, verdant lawn and pretty garden beds. Two sheds are also out back.

Beautifully presented, this GJ Gardiner-built house – on a huge 1850 square metres – has the welcome mat out for new owners. A central hallway heads to the light-drenched family-meals area at the back, along the way passing a lounge-dining room and a hallway to a powder room, main bathroom and two fitted bedrooms. Tucked off the lounge room, the main bedroom has a walk-in robe and large en suite with spa. The bright kitchen has a dishwasher and electric wall oven and cooktop. Gas ducted heating and a wood heater are included. A terrific covered deck has views of lovingly created leafy gardens that cleverly and prettily follow the lay of the land. Other features include a 2kW solar system, town and tank water, and Colorbond double garage/workshop with power and concrete floor. A 15-minute stroll will have you in the heart of town.

There’s lots to fall in love with at this property, sophisticated and polished in all aspects and at home in a coveted pocket of town. The house has a luxe feel with a focus on entertainment, family times and outdoor spaces. Exemplifying the high standards on show throughout, a giant picture window in the family-meals zone frames water and garden views, while the kitchen is a sleek entertainer with all mod-cons and butler’s pantry. A theatre room behind double doors feels rich and moody. Four large fitted bedrooms include the main with a swish en suite in which a picture window provides leafy courtyard views. Out back and down the side, a covered deck shelters a swim-spa plus a barbecue kitchen with stone benches. Other drawcards? Garden shed, vegie patch, landscaped gardens, double garage, side gates and more.

Three minutes from the primary school and on about 4047 square metres, this freshly updated residence offers a rural lifestyle with in-town convenience. With a fab verandah along the back, the house has two living areas flanking the kitchen – one a carpeted lounge-dining room with exposed brick wall, the other a family-meals area. The large, appealing kitchen has stacks of storage, a brekkie bench and dishwasher. Of four fitted bedrooms, the main has a walk-in robe and fully tiled and revamped en suite. Grey carpet, in much of the house, is new, as are vertical blinds and drapes. Ducted heating keeps winter comfy, and natural gas and town water are connected. A good-sized shed has concrete floor and power, while a second driveway leads to the backyard. Lawns, hedging, pretty garden beds and ornamentals, plus a feature gum tree, deliver an inviting backyard.

“ONCE IT’S GONE....” I am worried! We W have heard that over the next couple of years Katies, Rivers and Millers will be closing some 300 stores. Myer is struggling and it seems that “end of year” sales now go “all year”. The news tells us that Amazon has arrived in Australia - a massive on-line organisation through which almost anything can be purchased from clothing to white goods to furniture. Of course, with Amazon, all profits will go out of Australia and very little employment will be generated in Australia. Y s, I am worried. In a very short period of time we Ye have seen manufacturing die. Many of you who read this will remember Flexdrive. Situated in New Gisborne, Flexdrive employed over 900 people in 1986 and now it is no longer! Ford, Holden, To T yota - gone! On a much smaller scale, I look at the local towns and note empty shops and yes, an empty Romsey Pub! If we do not shop in person, in shops, then those shops will be gone. If we do not support our local coff f ee ff shops, take-away, restaurants, local retailers of all sorts, they will all be “gone”. We W hear when there is a large firm closing. We W hear on the news when 500 or 1,000 people lose their jobs. We W do not hear when the local butcher has to close and two people lose their jobs. We W do not hear about the “little”people”. Please think about the children and employment. Not everyone is an academic, not everyone is suited to University. We W must keep our small business alive and well to ensure future employment for years to come.

The twenty acres (approx.) are well fenced into a number of fertile paddocks. Tw T o beautiful dams, plus two tanks and a bore ensure an abundance of water for animals

33 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 5, 2017

SPORT EDFL looks to netball By Tara Murray Netball is set to come to the Essendon District Football League. Twelve months after seeking feedback from clubs about the possible introduction of an EDFL netball competition, the league looks set to get a competition going next year. EDFL chief executive Marc Turri said the league is keen to the get an open age competition started. “We’ve had a meeting with Netball Victoria and they support it, and we’ve also met with the Essendon District Netball Association which plays out of Aberfeldie,” he said. “We’re looking to meet with Moreland council about possibly playing at the Northern Saints’ home ground. They are building eight new courts at their ground [Fawkner’s Charles Mutton Reserve] and it will give us somewhere to play.” In a step forward, the league has appointed Pauline Leslie as the league’s first women’s football and netball development officer. A major part of Leslie’s role is to get the netball competition up and running. Turri said it’s likely the competition would initially be played from just one location, with many football grounds not having netball facilities. Many country football leagues have club netball and football teams playing at the same location and day. Turri said the aim was to eventually bridge out to other locations once the facilities become available. He said there was always interest from EDFL clubs about having a netball competition, and several had fielded sides in local competitions. Twelve teams expressed interest in joining last year. Turri said they were unsure of numbers for next year. East Sunbury is one club that is keen to join an EDFL competition. The Thunder has 50 girls and five sides playing in the Sunbury Netball Association on weeknights. Thunder’s Pauline Trice said the netballers would love the opportunity to play on Saturdays alongside the footballers. “As a sporting club, we want to accommodate as many people as possible and netball allows us to accommodate the girls,” she said. “We really want to be a family club. “Quite a few of the players are partners of the footballers and follow their partners around on a Saturday already.” Turri said adding netball to the already growing football element of the league would give more people the opportunity to be involved.

Tigers have an eye on future Lancefield will be looking to the future in next year’s Riddell District Netball League season. With a new coaching panel and several changes to the playing group, the Tigers know that it won’t be an easy year. But new coach Michelle Rix is excited for the challenge ahead. Rix, who was looking at being captain-coach of the B-grade side, has now taken on the coaching role for both teams. She’s also an assistant coach with Boroondara’s Victorian Netball League division 1 team. Rix has had a long association with the RDNL and Lancefield. She’s been involved in the league for 30 years, with about half of those at the Tigers. Rix has coached RDNL interleague and regional state league teams, and spent a few years as the under-19 coach at Riddell, before returning to Lancefield this year. She said there would be exciting times ahead for the club, which is taking a long term approach. Many of this year’s grand final team aren’t returning, with several following former coach Alan Watson to Melton South. “We’re under no illusions that this is a rebuilding year for us,” Rix said. “Player-wise we will be undermanned, but it’s about putting together a culture of playing for the love of the club. “It will test us at times, but we’ll make sure we have a lot of fun.” Rix said some of the younger players would get their opportunities next year, while some former players are returning to the club. Stacey Deimos returns to the Tigers and will be Rix’s assistant coach, as well as coaching the under-17s and playing in the A-grade team. Deimos was part of Romsey’s A-grade premiership team this year. Rix said they would welcome any players interested in joining the club. “There’s a bit of change happening at Lancefield,” she said. “The whole club is making sure we have the right culture in place for long term growth.” The Tigers held their first training session last week. New head of operations brings a wealth of experience Jordan Doyle has been appointed the new Riddell District Football Netball League operations manager. Doyle, who spent four years working at AFL Victoria as the Western Jets’ football operations co-ordinator, started in the role late last month. He takes over from Steve Williams who had two years in the role. Doyle said he was excited by the challenge ahead. “Rod [Ward] has given me an opportunity and it’s an exciting one to be involved with,” he said. “I’ve been involved in club [environment] and now I’m getting the opportunity to manage a league. “I’m starting fresh and I’ve got no history with the league. They don’t know me and I don’t know them, so there’s no preconceived ideas and opinions about people, so it’s exciting.” Doyle said he hoped to bring some of his experiences from the various clubs he’s been

involved in to his new job. As well as working for the Western Jets, Doyle played and coached football at Westbourne Grammarians and also played football at Spotswood and Williamstown CYMS. He’s also coached and been a committee member at Williamstown Cricket Club. He has a sport and recreation management and bachelor of business degree as well as having completed a masters of business administration. “It’s a great opportunity to work with clubs and build relationships with them,” Doyle said. “It’s about trying to understand what the clubs want … at times I’ll put my club hat on to understand what the clubs are thinking.” Doyle said continuing the growth of the league at senior and junior level was something he was keen to continue. He said the league was starting to become a destination league.

34 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 5, 2017

AFL Goldfields regional general manager Rod Ward said he was excited about the appointment of Doyle. “Jordan has quality experience in football operations in the TAC Cup with the Western Jets and his experience at such a prominent level in football with AFL Victoria will make him a great asset to work with and assist clubs and their members in the RDFNL.” Ward thanked Williams for his work over the past two years. Williams will finish up on December 15. In other AFL Goldfields staff appointments, Shane Anwyl is the new Ballarat Football Netball League operations manager and Mitch Tinning will take on the same role in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League. Cricket’s pitch to girls delivers expanded competition

Gisborne’s girls side. (Supplied)

The Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s girls competition continues to grow. What started three years ago with less than 20 girls for some skills sessions, is now a fully fledged competition with two different age groups. GDCA girls cricket co-ordinator Angela Dempsey is thrilled with the response to the competition. “We have 10 teams, four in the under-12s and six in the under-15s,” she said. “Last year we had 48 girls come and play at a central location and we’ve now got close to 80 girls representing their clubs, which is a great increase. “The biggest thing is the girls want to play. We had to cancel Friday night and all the parents were asking about a catch-up round as the girls don’t want to miss out on games.”

Riddell and Bacchus Marsh have two teams each, while Rupertswood, Gisborne, Hanging Rock, Woodend, Wallan and Kyneton have all fielded teams. Dempsey said some clubs, which only have one team, are already thinking about getting a second team up for next season. Gisborne has had success with its under-15 side and is looking to field a second team. Gisborne’s Gary Sanders, who has long been involved with women’s and girl’s cricket, said it had been exciting to be a part of. “Jake McIntyre, who is a PE teacher, got a side together for a Gisborne Primary School,” Sanders said. “They were pretty keen to keep playing and are now playing for Gisborne in this competition.” The school team competed in the finals of the Central Highlands T20 school competition,

Romsey breaks drought By Tara Murray Romsey was the big winner in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup on a rain-affected day on Saturday. While most cricket competitions called off play before the weekend because of predicted wet weather, the GDCA decided the second day of the round five matches would go ahead. However on the day, only one top grade game went ahead, the remainig games were declared draws. Romsey benefited from the decision to play, claiming its first win of the season against Sunbury United. Romsey captain-coach Ben Way said he, like many others, didn’t think they would get any play on Saturday. “I was expecting it to be called off,” he said. “Their [United’s] captain shot me a text and we went and had a look at the ground. It was quite clear and the pitch was dry and the outfield was pretty good. “There was drizzle throughout the day, but it wasn’t heavy enough to have the game called off.” Romsey entered day two in the box seat, having made 7-266 on day one. That score proved to be more than enough with United bowled out for 124. Josh Wallace top-scored for United. Taylor Stevenson was the pick of the bowlers for Romsey, taking four wickets. Way said Stevenson came on first change and then bowled for the rest of the day. Way said they were relieved to have that first McIntyre Cup win on the board. “We have been playing some good cricket,” he said. “Just some things haven’t worked out. “We knew if we kept making runs, things would turn our way. We were playing consistent cricket without getting wins. “There’s been a few plans we’ve worked on and how we execute them.” The win moves Romsey from last to second last and caps off a couple of good weeks for the club. Romsey is through to the T20 competition finals after two wins in the pool rounds. Way, who is in his first year in charge at Romsey, said he was enjoying the role. After playing just three games across all formats last season, Way has played every game this season and is averaging 118 with the bat. “It’s something different and something I’m really enjoying,” he said. “You’re just not out there fielding, but you’re always thinking and I love that part of the game.” With a win now on the board, Way is hoping more will start to flow. “We aren’t here to make up the numbers,” he said. There was a little bit more action in the B-grade competition, but all matches ended in draws. Wallan and Eynesbury and Bacchus Marsh and Gisborne played to tea of their matches, before the games were called off.

missing out on the final by percentage. In the GDCA competition, Sanders said all the girls were making contributions. The Dragons have one win from their three matches, which also includes a draw. “Monty Paton has made 43 runs and taken three wickets and Natasha Ward has made 15 runs and taken five wickets,” Sanders said. “Zoe Phillips, Caitlyn Wagstaff and Olivia Murray have each taken wickets, while Zoe Smyth, Lily Reid, Imogen Withington and Ebony Spiteri have contributed runs in different games.” Dempsey said any players, or even clubs that wanted to put in teams, could play in the second half of the season which starts in February. Tara Murray

Thumping win for Woodend Riddell, Romsey and Woodend have locked in their spots in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s T20 finals with big wins. Having all won their first-round matches, wins on Tuesday night were all they needed to seal finals berths. Woodend’s good run with the bat continued, this time against Lancefield. For a second straight week, Woodend posted more than 200, this time making 7-218. Marcus Stewart top-scored with 84 after making 83 in the first round. The Tigers got nowhere near Woodend’s score, making 3-120. Jarryd McGill played a lone hand in making 80 not out for the Tigers. Romsey also had a good night with the bat, making 6-196 against Sunbury United. Skipper Ben Way finished unbeaten on 69. United was bowled out for 127. Sean Day took three wickets for Romsey. Riddell easily accounted for Diggers Rest Bulla. The Bombers made 7-131 before bowling the Burras out for 89. James Hughes took 4-14 for the Bombers. Rupertswood had a big win against Sunbury, making 9-123 before bowling Sunbury out for 47. Bacchus Marsh lost to Gisborne. Gisborne made 4-150 on the back of 75 not out from skipper Jarryd Vernon. It proved to be enough, with the Bulls falling just short, making 141. Both teams finished with 1-1 records. Riddell will host Rupertswood and Romsey will take on Woodend in the semi-finals. Meanwhile in the district division, Kyneton finished fourth despite not winning a match. The Tigers earned points and percentage from a bye in round one. The numbers fell the wrong way for East Sunbury which finished fifth, despite winning a match. On Tuesday night, the Thunder defeated St Anthonys by 23 runs. Macedon and Eynesbury won their matches to secure finals spots. Macedon knocked off Kyneton by four runs, while the Eagles were too good for Ashfield. The Eagles have since been stripped of their points for that game for playing an unregistered player, but still finish third. Wallan, which had a bye on Tuesday, is the other team through to finals, after a good win in round one. In the semi-finals, Eynesbury will play Macedon and Wallan will host Kyneton.

Romsey skipper Ben Way was thrilled to get a first win the McIntyre Cup. (Shawn Smits)

Toyota special edition delivers By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring In a world that’s moving at breakneck speed a five-year old car such as the Toyota 86 can need a freshen-up. A clever marketing move is the introduction of limited editions that can take on an aura of exclusivity. Hence the Toyota LE. Only 60, all in a wild orange shade, came Down Under a couple of months back. We’ve just spent a most enjoyable week in one. The Toyota 86 has plenty of other changes under that stunning skin. Genuine sports changes by way of a stiffer Sachs suspension and larger Brembo brakes (four-calliper front, two-calliper rear) than those on the 86 GTS, on which the LE is based. Toyota tells us the styling of the 86 was inspired by the 1965 Toyota 2000GT, a sports model that’s being auctioned these days for more than a million dollars. The black details on the LE set off its wild paint brilliantly. A different design of 17-inch 10-spoke alloys ties in nicely with the body colour and makes it easy to see the big Brembos. Inside the 86 LE there’s a suede dashboard with orange stitching. The seats and steering wheel get the same treatment. The Toyota/Subaru 2.0-litre flat-four engine was revised in late 2016, lifting it from 200 horsepower to 207 bhp (152 kW if you like metric engine numbers). If you don’t want a six-speed manual, tough luck – that’s all you get in this cool little sports machine. At the same time as the 2016 upgrade, the

differential ratio was reduced to get grunt to the road by way of having the engine at higher revs for the same road speed. Drop the Toyota down a gear or two, give it a bootfull and enjoy the ride – there’s no turbocharger and the engine responds virtually instantly. Handling is exceptionally good and the LE’s new Sachs system is even more responsive than that in the others in the 86 range. Clever design means ride comfort doesn’t really seem any different from the standard Toyota 86. The front sport seats provide good support but aren’t too aggressive in the shape of the side bolsters. Noise from the tyres is generally subdued, but some harsh surfaces, particularly concrete and coarse-chip, do increase sound intrusion. . At $41,490, the Limited Edition 86 costs significantly more than the $36,490 GTS on which it’s based, but in the world of high-performance that’s the penalty you have to pay.
