Dingo pups spring into cuddle action

There’s been a surprise special delivery at the Dingo Discovery Research Centre in Toolern Vale. Five unseasonal six-week-old pups – dingoes are usually born in winter – are bringing some extra fun to the centre. Members of the public can call in for a cuddle and tour of their dingo den at weekends until December 17. ■ Full story: Page 10

care and residential aged care facilities in the short-term. Last Tuesday more than two thirds of MRH’s members attended a meeting where the merger was approved. “Members voted resoundingly in support, with the two resolutions [for the amalgamation] achieving 83 per cent and 81 per cent support,” Mr Tidbury said. Long-term former MRH board member Terry Larkins was among those who voted against the change. Mr Larkins said while he accepted the democratic vote, handing the community organisation over to a corporation

was “a betrayal of the hard work of the previous boards”. Mr Larkins said the community would lose control of the almost 60 years of work invested in MRH. “It is a giveaway – not a partnership,” he said. Mr Tidbury confirmed Benetas would now run the organisation. “Amalgamation is the true industry term,” he said. “Benetas ultimately will take responsibility for the operation to the organisation, while the local community retains a strong voice in the delivery of services through a community advisory committee.”

The future of aged care in the Macedon Ranges has received a major boost with a $60 million investment on the way. Macedon Ranges Health (MRH), a not-for-profit organisation, is amalgamating with aged-care service provider Benetas after its members voted in favour of the merger last week. Benetas has committed to investing more than $60 million in Gisborne over the next eight years. Macedon Ranges Health chief executive

Don Tidbury said the 75-bed nursing home Gisborne Oaks would be redeveloped as a new “120-plus bed, world-class, residential aged care facility”. A “best-practice, integrated, supported living retirement village” will be built on MRH-owned land in Gisborne. Mr Tidbury said Gisborne Oaks would be rebuilt on another part of MRH’s land, and the existing facility would then be used as the site for the retirement village. He said the merge would be finalised in the next six months, while a $1.2 million upfront investment would be made to MRH primary

Cars targeted in crime spree By Serena Seyfort Nearly every car parked in a residential Sunbury court was ransacked last week. Police said cars parked in Kerri Court were targeted in a crime spree across the town in the early hours last Thursday. Senior Constable Troy Farley said the ransacked cars included several that owners claimed were locked. He said police believe a device may have been used to open them without leaving a mark.

Cash and various items were stolen from the vehicles, including a laptop and an iPad. In a separate incident, a motor vehicle was stolen from Gap Road and a 6 x 4 trailer was taken from another street on the same night. In Harcombe Drive, petrol was siphoned from a vehicle. Tools were also stolen from a container at the tip on Riddell Road in Sunbury. Senior Constable Farley said there was “no doubt” the series of incidents were related. He said Sunbury police had several suspects.

‘‘

Lock and double lock cars and don’t leave any - Troy Farley valuables

’’

The crime spree has prompted police to issue a warning to people to ensure they did not leave valuables in their cars. “Lock and double-lock cars,” Senior Constable Foley said.

“And don’t leave any valuables.” Last month, vehicle owners reported thefts from cars, including those that were locked, in Gisborne, Kyneton and Malmsbury. Senior Constable Farley said any information, even something that seemed insignificant, could be of use to police investigating the crimes. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

Tis the season to drive safely warns council Hume home owners planning to deck their houses in Christmas lights are being urged to think about traffic and pedestrian safety before switching on their displays. The council is asking residents of homes with high volumes of visitors to get in touch with the council’s traffic management team ahead of the festive season to discuss any safety concerns. Mayor Geoff Porter said the council could help residents ensure traffic around popular Christmas light displays was safely managed. “Council knows that many residents go through weeks, months and sometimes years of effort to put together some magnificent displays,” he said. “The last thing anyone wants is for someone to be hurt or injured on their way to see a Christmas light display.” The council is also calling on residents to ensure they are aware of traffic as they make their way around the neighbourhood displays. Cr Porter reminded drivers to be courteous and considerate of others, ensuring they park legally, without blocking footpaths, driveways or roads. “As with every year, we want everyone to be able to enjoy the city’s Christmas light displays safely,” he said. “Families visiting displays need to ensure younger children are supervised at all time, especially when walking to and from Christmas light displays.”

Kismet a fair to remember The Kismet Park Primary School community is eagerly preparing for its Twilight Country Fair on Friday. The school grounds will be buzzing with rides, market stalls, a petting zoo, competitions and a silent auction to fundraise for new equipment. Kismet Park pupils can’t wait for the pony rides, talent quest and fairy floss. The children have been creating masterpieces in their art lessons to display around the school, while grade one pupils have been working on creative writing pieces to entice the Sunbury community to join them at the fair. Genevieve Carpenter wrote: “We need to raise money so we can buy new sports equipment, musical equipment and more books, too. Reading is important so we can learn more words. “You would love to have the strawberry cakes and jam biscuits and the hot dogs that come with sauce!” the grade one pupil wrote. Charlotte Hodges also tried to pull in visitors with the food on offer, writing: “Do you want to eat snow-cones, cakes, biscuits and jelly?” The Twilight Country Fair is on Friday, November 24, from 3.15-8pm at 9-11 McEwen Drive, Sunbury. O come, all ye faithful Sunbury’s award-winning Christmas on the Green celebration is just around the corner. Performances, children’s activities and a live nativity scene will bring the spirit of Christmas to life on Saturday, December 9, at the Sunbury Lay Ecumenical Committee-run evening. More than 2500 locals joined Sunbury’s churches last year to celebrate the festive season. This year the free event was recognised as Hume’s Community Event of the Year at the council’s Australia Day awards. Hume’s mayor at the time, councillor Drew Jessop, said the evening was “a massive success in the Hume community”.

“It brought together more than 2500 people, provided local schools and artists with an opportunity to showcase their talents and also raised funds for local community groups, such as CareWorks SunRanges,” Cr Jessop said. Hume council said the event also “delivered fun, excitement and pride to the residents of Sunbury and the wider community”. Christmas on the Green is on Saturday, December 9, from 5pm at Sunbury Village Green, 7 Stawell Street, Sunbury. The carols will be broadcast live on Sunbury Radio 99.3FM. Serena Seyfort

Hume plans a healthier outlook By Serena Seyfort The health of Hume residents is poorer than state averages, and the council wants to do something about it. The city’s Health and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2021 identifies “ambitious goals” for healthy change, after council research showed Hume had high rates of obesity, gambling, family violence and poor diets. While Hume’s residents are relatively young compared to the rest of Melbourne, research showed 30.5 per cent do not take part in any physical activity during the week, compared to the 18.9 per cent of Victorians who don’t. The council’s findings also revealed 61.9 per of Hume residents were overweight or obese in 2014, compared to 49.2 per cent of Victorians. Family violence rates sat at 1554 incidents in Hume per 100,000 residents in the year 2014-15, compared to the statewide figure of 1191 per 100,000 people. Hume council’s new plan aims to increase residents levels of activity, healthy eating, connectivity, healthy decisions and participation by 2025. It aims to improve levels of employment, education and social connectivity and reduce preventable chronic diseases. The council, at its meeting last week, moved to publicly exhibit the plan and take feedback until January 12. Councillor Karen Sherry told the meeting the “ambitious goals”, such as striving for a 30 per cent decrease in the number of smoking adults by 2025, were needed in Hume. “Unfortunately in our neighbourhood of Hume, a lot of people live sedentary lifestyles,” Cr Sherry said. “They’re obese, they’re not working and they don’t have the access to fresh good produce that perhaps they should.” Visit www.hume.vic.gov.au to see the full Hume Health and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2021.

Adoption, the cat’s whiskers This bundle of fur is among 200 cats searching for a new home. RSPCA Victoria is attempting to find forever homes for 200 cats to make room at its shelters. The animal welfare organisation is expecting thousands of homeless kittens to arrive at its shelters in coming months, with cats able to breed up to five litters during spring, summer and autumn. In the past financial year, 4000 kittens arived at the RSPCA, with most of the animals arriving between November and April. To encourage as many people as possible to adopt a cat, the RSPCA will reduce adoption fees from $120 to $39 from Thursday, November 23, until Sunday, November 26. Kittens under four months old will still cost $195. Every cat available for adoption has been desexed, microchipped and vaccinated and had veterinary checks. Water warning for fire season By Serena Seyfort As fire season approaches, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges’ water supplier has warned it cannot guarantee water supplies during a bushfire. Western Water has advised residents not to rely on water mains because their capability can be damaged by fire. Customer, community relations and operations general manager Graham Holt said while the supplier was well-prepared for fire

season, Western Water’s networks could be affected by fire. “In the event of a fire, if electricity is cut or water infrastructure is affected, pumps and other equipment may fail, cutting the mains water supply,” Mr Holt said. “If there is extremely high demand for water from customers and the CFA during a fire, water pressure may drop. “We also recommend keeping 10-15 litres of drinking water stored during summer in case water quality is affected by bushfire.”

‘‘

- Graham Hold

Mr Holt said residents should consult their local CFA about their options for protecting their family and property during a fire. In preparation for fire season, Western Water said it had back-up generators ready,

water storage tanks at high capacity, and staff on call during the fire danger period. The water supplier said residents could help the community to be prepared for fire season by keeping watch of fire hydrants near their homes to ensure they were not covered by debris and vegetation. If residents believe a hydrant needs maintenance, it can be reported by calling Western Water on 1300 650 422, filling in a form at WesternWater.com.au or sending a message via Facebook.

Strong support for the yes vote By Serena Seyfort Support for same sex marriage is high within Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. Results from the same sex marriage survey, revealed last week, show the Federal seats of McEwen and Bendigo had a higher ‘yes’ vote than the national average of 61.6 per cent. In McEwen, which contains towns including Sunbury, Gisborne, Lancefield and Romsey, 65.4 per cent of the 112,712 people who voted

were in favour of same-sex marriage. Bendigo’s 92,264 voters, including those from Macedon, Woodend and Kyneton, voted 68.7 per cent in favour of gay marriage. Both seats also experienced high voter participation, with 80.7 per cent of eligible voters in McEwen and 82.7 per cent in Bendigo casting a vote. The nation’s participation rate was 79.5 per cent. McEwen MP Rob Mitchell told Star Weekly he was pleased with the high rate of

participation in the survey, and that the results should mark the end of division and hurt for the LGBTIQ+ community. Bendigo MP Lisa Chester said she was proud of the electorate for voting ‘yes’, and that local campaigners should be proud of their achievements. LGBTIQ+ support group Openhouse Macedon Ranges and Macedon Ranges councillors hosted a celebration last Thursday night at Mount Macedon Hotel.

Openhouse Macedon Ranges founder Jenny Lonergan said the number of people who chose to have their say by participating in the survey was “so heartening”. Just after the survey result was announced last Wednesday, she met with three local priests to discuss inclusion and diversity in Macedon Ranges. “The conversations were exciting and really hopeful,” Ms Lonergan said. “The day was actually perfect.”

Pictures are pet perfect Rescued pets have posed for paw-traits to fundraise for homeless animals in ruff situations. The paw-traits star in the 2018 PetRescue calendars, which are being sold at PETstock Sunbury for $3, with all proceeds going towards helping save homeless Aussie animals. PetRescue chief executive Vickie Davy said 12,000 pets found safe and loving homes over the Christmas and New Year period last year, thanks to the more than $110,000 raised from the sale of the calendars. The pets featured in the calendars are all success stories of pet adoption. Richie the greyhound can be seen in the 2018 edition. He was rescued by 10-year-old Billy, who saved his pocket money to get his dog. Richie now enjoys casserole dinners and trips to the beach. Pups buck a dingo tradition By Serena Seyfort This spring has sprung a surprise at Toolern Vale’s Dingo Discovery Sanctuary and Research Centre. Dingoes Cooma and Crusoe welcomed a litter of pups last month – outside the usual breeding season. Dingo Discovery owner Lyn Watson said the arrival of the five dingo pups in October “was a great surprise”.

‘‘

Under five per cent of the dingo population have - Lyn Watson white fur

’’

She said dingo pups were typically born in the colder months. The five pups join the 18 born this winter at the centre. The unseasonal litter presented another welcome surprise – two of the pups have white fur. “Under five per cent of the dingo population have white fur,” Ms Watson said. Members of the public are being invited to share a cuddle with the sanctuary’s newest residents. Sessions will be held every weekend until December 17. For information or bookings, visit the Australian Dingo Foundation Facebook page.

MY PLACE Gisborne singer Danielle Fromica was born in Paris, and recorded two singles in London. After moving to the Macedon Ranges 10 years ago, she now spends her weekends performing jazz and blues at local venues. She speaks with Serena Seyfort.

What do you like about the area? There’s lots to keep us here. We like the location. We’ve got the best of both worlds being in the countryside while being close to the city. And we like the nature aspect. We love the walks. We’ve got a great walk from where we live in the Mulbarton estate into town and around the back paths into the Gisborne Botanic Gardens. We’ve also got a great selections of cafes, restaurant, wineries and places of interest. Do you have a favourite local place? There’s some great cafes. Two that stand out are Canteena, just behind IGA, and Jed’s. They make great coffee and lunches. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? Definitely parking. Parking is becoming quite hard to get in the main area of Gisborne. And we’d love a cinema, but I don’t think there’s the amount of people. We travel to Sunbury, Watergardens or the city to see films. Tell us about your singing gigs in Macedon Ranges.

(Shawn Smits)

My husband and I moved to Woodend for a treechange in 2007. We moved to Gisborne in 2014. We just love it and we don’t plan on moving anywhere too soon.

Now I’m part of Kind of Blue Jazz Duo. I’m the singer and Gordon Brenkovich is the guitar player. He’s not a local but all of our work is in Macedon Ranges. We’ve been playing locally for four years now. We play jazz, blues and bossa nova. We’ve got a big repertoire, probably close to 200 songs. Tell us about your career before the past four years performing here. I was born in France where I started singing when I was 11, and had singing lessons. At the age of 14 I was taken on by a singing manager, who then introduced me to Phillips recording and I made two records in my mid-teens. During that time I lived in London and also performed on stage and television. Then I ended up getting married young and having a family, which put a stop to my career. But I’ve resumed it, and I don’t think you’re ever too old. I think age is no barrier. Before moving to Macedon Ranges, I also lived in Western Australia for many years where I did amateur theatre and some vocal work for advertising. Do you have any upcoming gigs? On Sunday, November 26, and Sunday, December 17, we’ll be at Olive Jones in Macedon. On Sunday, December 3, we’re performing at Highfield Estate Reception, and on Sunday, December 10, at Mount Macedon Hotel. Looking ahead, on New Year’s Eve we’re at the Glen Erin at Lancefield.

Sally’s big on Little Aths World champion athlete Sally Pearson is encouraging Sunbury and Macedon Ranges youngsters to participate in Little Athletics. The hurdler said Little Athletics was where her career began. “Little Athletics gave me the start I needed to be successful and fulfil my dreams,” Pearson said. “I encourage more kids across Australia to create their own story through athletics.” “I hope that the kids understand that it doesn’t matter if you’re not winning when you’re this age – you can always be an Olympic champion if your heart is set on it and you dream big.” During the 16-week Little Athletics season,

Coles will provide free bananas at the Kyneton, Lancefield, Romsey, Gisborne and Sunbury Little Athletic clubs. Pearson said bananas were her favourite fruit in her training diet. “I do remember coming back from training sessions and sometimes eating about five bananas,” she said. Little Athletics Australia chief executive Martin Stillman said more than 95,000 children around Australia took part in Little Athletics last year and he hoped even more would join this year. Gingerbread Christmas cookies INGREDIENTS Cookies • 160g unsalted butter • 140g castor sugar • 180g brown sugar • 3 eggs • 2 tbsp molasses • 500g plain flour • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 3 tsp mixed spice • 2 tbsp ground ginger Lemon Icing • 1 1/2 lemons, juiced • 300g pure icing sugar, sifted METHOD Cream butter and sugars in a food processor. Add the eggs and molasses and process until combined. Add remaining ingredients and bring together to a smooth dough. Rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180C fan-forced or 200C conventional. Line a baking tray with baking paper. On a floured surface, roll out dough to 1 centimetre thick and cut out cookies. Lift on to lined tray, leaving a couple of centimetres between each, and bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden. They will still be a little soft when they come out of the oven so leave to cool on the tray. To make the lemon icing, mix together the icing sugar and lemon juice until you have a thick honey-like consistency - adjust with more sugar or juice if needed. Dip the cooled biscuits in the icing or decorate using a squeeze bottle or piping bag - you can also set edible silver balls in the icing to add a little more sparkle - and place on a rack to set.

Reserve price: $1.35 million

This circa 1864 building began life as the Royal Mail Hotel, once served as shire office and post office, and is now a substantially renovated residence of considerable size. A cottage and a massive shed – used since 1982 to run a timber products manufacturing business – are also on the block of about 8985 square metres. Constructed of handmade bricks on bluestone foundations, the house has been re-floored with recycled boards from an Echuca hospital, has received new handcrafted sash windows and has had corbelled arches replaced or restored.

Same for the deep skirts and the roses and cornices on ceilings rising to about four metres. Four fireplaces with mantels remain, one of which has a marble surround. This incredible piece of history is crying out to be an art gallery, tea rooms, restaurant or function centre, STCA. One of the rooms, at about 90 square metres (that’s about 12 x 6 metres), is ideal for carving space from residential living. In the hydronically heated house, four big bedrooms (three with fireplaces), plus a study, range along two of three intersecting

hallways, as does the plumbed bathroom, incomplete save for a spectacular leadlight window crafted by a Tylden artist. The kitchen is all timber – blackwood on benches – and has loads of storage with brass knobs, an enamel double sink with old brass taps, a cute pull-out bench, a Bosch dishwasher and Miele stainless-steel underbench oven and electric cooktop. The laundry piles on the atmosphere with recycled timber cabinetry – and lots of it. A double-brick cottage – once a scullery – is a brick-paved breezeway’s width from the house. It has a bedroom, basic

1

bathroom, living room and kitchenette. Handmade floor tiles in here ooze history – as do the shingles lining the pitched ceiling of the aforementioned shed. A second old shed has bluestone flooring, there’s 60,000 litres of tank water and a bore has a pump. Re-wiring, re-plumbing and re-roofing are all done. The property’s non-conforming existing use rights allows the council discretion to approve other non-conforming uses. Let your imagination take flight … Carole Levy

“WHO AM I?” Until recently, I thought I was Australian, now, since the debacle in Parliament, I’m not so sure who I am. What a complete mess our Governement seems to be in. While they argue who is and who is not Australian, unemployment increases, homelessness increases, the elderly are neglected and Australia is rapidly becoming a laughing stock. The situation in the Government has however given me food for thought. In the case of Richard, it is straight forward. His parents were Polish, he was 3 years old when he came to Australian and were naturalised as Australian citizens. In my case, with the exception of one, all my grand parents were born in Australia. My great grand parents came to Australia in the mid 1800 when Australia was a colony. They were not naturalised! My paternal grand mother came to Australia from England in the late 1800s and I am sure she woul;d not have been naturalised, so, who am I? Many of my high school friends were Jewish. Their parents had survived concentration camps and arrived in Australia as people without a country. I don’t know how or if they could have been naturalised. Where does that leave their children and grandchildren? This I do know! It is time for the Government to get serious about governing and work out who is who and get on with the job that “WE” are paying for or, r r, call an election and let someone else govern. • Column supplied by Liz Dormontt. SPORT Calder Cannons young gun sweats on AFL draft

Mitchell Podhajski has his fingers crossed he’s done enough to get drafted. (Damian Visentini)

Calder Cannons’ Mitchell Podhajski has a nervous week ahead before finding out whether he’s done enough to get himself on an AFL list for next season. Podhajski’s name has been mentioned as a possible draftee, but the man himself isn’t sure whether it will happen or not. “Straight after the combine it was a really weird feeling – there’s nothing more I can do,” he said. “I’m starting to feel pretty nervous … sometimes I think I’ve done enough and other times I’m not sure. “I’ve got my VFL options sorted if it doesn’t work out.” Podhajski started the year looking to cement his spot in the Cannons side after playing eight games last year, and he did exactly that. He finished third in the Cannons’ best and fairest and was named in the TAC Cup team

of the year. Podhajski said he was happy with how his season panned out. “I got into the squad and I trained hard and I put on a bit of size,” he said. “I didn’t limit what I could achieve this year. I didn’t set my goals too high and I was keen to reach those goals. “I progressed each week.” The first goal for Podhajski was to make the Vic Metro squad and play at least one game – which he did. With still half a season left after the national championship, Podhajski wasn’t going to rest on his laurels. “There was still a long way to go in the season,” he said. “I wasn’t happy to settle with that and would have regretted not pushing myself and continuing to play well.” As the season wound down Podhajski continued to work hard ahead of the national

Tigers focus on positives

It was a special day at Romsey Golf Club as John Laing won the memorial shield. The 83-year-old, who had never won the shield in its 30-odd years of existence, defeated Mark Nicholls jnr in the final. It was Laing’s ability to find the middle of the fairway which proved to be the difference. In the club’s regular Saturday competition, Jim Patton took home the win from Hugh Drummond. Meanwhile, Romsey’s Darlene Barker finished equal 10th in the Silver Spoon State Final competition.

By Tara Murray Lancefield proved no match for Bacchus Marsh in their Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup match. But the Tigers showed some encouraging signs. Needing 346 for the win after a strong batting performance by the Bulls the previous week, the Tigers needed to take hold of the Bacchus Marsh bowling attack – something no team has been able to do this season. The Tigers battled before being bowled out for 150. Ryan Millar top-scored for the Tigers with 26, with playing coach Luke Barker making 25. Barker said that while the loss was disappointing, the players would take positives from the game. “It was always going to be tough chasing 350,” he said. “At this stage, making that is out of our reach. “We batted for 60 overs and scored the highest score against them this season. “We looked like we would be bowled out at 4pm, but managed to bat until after five. We also got three late wickets. “They’re the benchmark of the competition and they are on top for a reason.” Barker said it was the first time this season the Tigers had felt the gap between playing B grade and McIntyre Cup, having been promoted in the off season. He said his side was sitting about where he thought it would be. “It’s all been very positive from the boys,” he said. “A few boys have acquitted themselves well and we had chances to win the first couple of games.” After Christmas, the Tigers will face Romsey and Sunbury twice each, Rupertswood and Diggers Rest Bulla. “They are all winnable games and if we could win at least another three games it would be a good result,” Barker said. “We want to stay out of the relegation zone.” The standout for the Tigers so far this season has been Matthew Bowden, who is the competition’s leading wicket taker. Barker said it was no surprise to him that Bowden had adjusted well to playing McIntyre Cup. The job doesn’t get any easier for the Tigers, who this week face second-placed Riddell and then third-placed Woodend. Barker said the Tigers were excited about challenging themselves against the top sides. Riddell joins Bacchus Marsh in remaining undefeated after a strong batting performance against Rupertswood. The Bombers had a day out with the bat, making a club record 8-481. Matt Day smashed 173, while Craig Ballinger made 115. Matthew

combine and aimed to bring down his two kilometre time trial. He said the combine was an unusual situation. “For me it’s probably the only chance I will speak to clubs. They know what my performances are like, so it was about impressing them with my personality. “I thought I did well.” The 18-year-old, who is studying at university, said if he doesn’t get selected he won’t be giving up on his dream of playing AFL just yet. “I’ve already put in how many years and I’ve worked really hard since under-16s and especially the last 12 months. “I’m not going to drop the bundle if I don’t get picked up this year. There’s still plenty of years to go.”

Livingstone made a quick-fire 70 not out. Sunbury captain-coach Dylan Wright guided his side to victory against Romsey. Wright made 158 in Sunbury’s total of 6-277, in reply to Romsey’s 9-275. Jarryd Vernon hit a massive 176 as Gisborne

chased down Sunbury United’s 9-304. The Dragons finished 7-305. Woodend got the win against Diggers Rest Bulla. After no play on day one, Woodend made 7-267, with skipper Michael Nalesnyik making 80. The Burras were bowled out for 218.

Playing group strengthened as Sharks look to future

Darragh McGovern has returned to Rupertswood. (Shawn Smits)

Not content to rest on the back of a Riddell District Football League grand final, Rupertswood has a hunger to go one step further next year, according to new coach Nick Ash. “We know we will be one of the hunted next year,” Ash said. “We will need to work on our weaknesses and practice our strengths to keep getting better. “Nothing is ever given … you have to work hard for it.” Ash, who has taken over from Kevin Fitzgerald, said it had been an easy transition into the senior role He was assistant coach the past two seasons and was appointed to the top job midway through this year, when Fitzgerald wouldn’t commit to the role for another year. “The transition has been really good,” Ash said. “They’re a great bunch of blokes and I’m working with a group of guys who have an average age of 22.

“Coaching senior football was always the plan. I’ve coached juniors before and now being an assistant coach I got the coaching bug.” First step for the Sharks during the off season was to ensure they had retained their current playing group. Ash said all the grand final team had re-signed, while only a few players from across the whole senior program weren’t returning. Former Rupertswood players Kayne Murphy and Darragh McGovern return to the club, having played with RDFL rival Sunbury Kangaroos this year. Ash said they were really making a focus of bringing players back to the club. “I’ve played a bit against Kayne and he’s a good player,” he said. “Getting Darragh back is important. He’s one of the fittest blokes and will teach the younger blokes how to go about things.” Joining them at Rupertswood, are John Barnard and Leigh Wellington, who come from Essendon District Football League premier

division. The pair will add much-needed height to the team. “Leigh didn’t play a lot of footy this year with elbow surgery,” Ash said. “He’s played senior football with Strathmore for a number of years. I grew up next door to him in Riddell. He’s a centre-half forward, centre-half back. “John played senior football this year as a ruckman-forward. We lacked a second ruckman with [Joel] West injured and Jackson Berry going down injured. “It gives us the luxury of putting Putty [Dean Putt] up forward and we saw what he did in the grand final.” Ash said the club would continue to give younger players an opportunity to play seniors. “Under Kev we played about 20 debutantes and will look to do the same thing next year,” he said. “Depth is one of our biggest things and guys who do the work will get opportunities.” Tara Murra Murray

Lane on the right track By Tara Murray New Gisborne’s Roby Lane made Cricket Victoria selectors sit up and take notice after they cut him from the Victoria Country under-19 squad in August. Lane, who was part of the original squad, was dropped in August when the group was cut in half and the 17-year-old thought his chances of being part of the Victoria Country team again this year were over. But a number of strong performances for Northcote’s Premier Cricket second XI side, forced selectors to recall him for the final team announced earlier this month. As a bottom-age player, Lane didn’t think he had a chance. “I thought it was unlikely with the number of good players across the state,” he said. “They selected a squad from the performances at the state championships earlier this year. We had a couple of training sessions before they narrowed it down. “I’ve been playing in the same grade as some of the other boys who were in front of me in the selection process. “I managed to get a few good games. It’s a massive honour and I’m pretty chuffed.” Selection caps off a big 12 months for Lane, who has gone from playing for Gisborne in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association C-grade division, to playing for his state. Lane said he could never have imagined the rise through the ranks, which included being part of a McIntyre Cup premiership. “I thought at the start of last season I’d be playing seconds with my mates and maybe get a couple of games in the ones,” the off-spinner said. “They put a lot of trust in me [playing in the ones] and it was a really good season. It was especially great as it was such a good group and I bonded with a lot of blokes I normally wouldn’t hang around with.” Lane’s performances caught the attention of Northcote coach David Reid, who invited him to come down to the premier cricket club. Making the move to the higher level was something he had been thinking about. “A lot of boys my age are looking for the next level of coaching and cricket,” he said. “I started the season in the twos and maybe I’ll work into the firsts if I’m lucky. I want to have a really solid season and cement my spot.” Lane said he would like to continue with his cricket and try to play at state level. He has a busy couple of months ahead, having also been selected in the Central Highlands team for the state championships next year. Lane won’t be the only former Gisborne cricketer in the Victoria Country side, with Tom Rogers also selected. Rogers, who plays for Melbourne University, was part of the team last year.

Kyneton knock not enough Kyneton remains without a win in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition despite a strong performance with the bat. Kyneton was always going to be in for a tough run chase against Gisborne. Needing 328 for victory, Kyneton batted out its overs but fell short, finishing 9-281. Ashfield ended Wallan’s unbeaten start to the season. Resuming at 5-43 and needing 117, Ashfield batted strongly to start day two. The two unbeaten batsmen, Jason King and Dylan Caruana, got their side to within two for the win, before Caruana was out for 41. Ashfield continued on, finishing at 8-156. King, who took three wickets on day one, made 70. East Sunbury’s imposing total of 7-302 was too much for Riddell. The winless Bombers could only manage 133 in reply. Nathan Penticoss was the best of the bowlers for the Thunder, taking 3-9. It’s the Thunder’s second win for the season and they currently sit fourth. Macedon showed some improvement with the bat against Bacchus Marsh, but it wasn’t enough. Macedon was bowled out nearly 100 runs short, for 188. Chris Axton finished unbeaten on 54. St Anthonys remains the only side undefeated, beating Eynesbury which also entered the round undefeated. Needing nearly 298 for the win, the Eagles were bowled out for 159. Saints skipper Cameron Clayton took 3-41. Tara Murray Roby Lane continues to develop as a top junior cricketer. (Shawn Smits)

Tigers coach in a happy return By Tara Murray Lancefield has turned to a former coach in its bid to improve its Riddell District Football League fortunes. The club last week announced Chris Collins would return to the club as playing coach for next year. It will be the second time Collins has taken the coaching reins at the club following his tenure in 2007 and ’08 when he was a 20-year-old. Collins, who stepped away from the club for the past three years due to other commitments, said he always thought he would become involved with the club once more. He replaces Cameron Wight as coach, who stepped into the role after Ash Manning resigned early in the 2017 season. “I’m really happy to be back … I’ve been thrown in the deep end,” Collins said. “I always knew I would come back at some time – I just didn’t think it would be as coach. “The club needs a little bit of help and I’m happy to put my hand up to help turn the club around. Everyone is giving it a crack. “The young guys need to have the club around so they have somewhere to go.” Collins, who is a Lancefield local, said the response from within the club and local community had been great. But he knows he doesn’t have an easy job ahead of him. The Tigers finished with two wins this year – both against sides that finished below them on the table.

“We’re in a similar position to back when I first took over,” Collins said. “I’m not daunted by it – I’m excited by it.” One of Collins’ first tasks is trying to retain this year’s playing group. He said most players had indicated they were likely to return. Brett Pitts is one out – he’s been appointed Hadfield coach, while Melton South has announced Lancefield best-and-fairest winner James Wooster would be joining it. “We’re confident we can turn things around, but we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves,” Collins said. “The first step is to change the culture of the club … things weren’t working the way they were. “The main objective is to get all the current players signed up. We’re also talking to a few guys. The only way is up for us.” In a big bonus for the club, the Tigers look set to field an under-19 team next season for the first time since 2013. Collins said it was important for the club to provide a pathway for players. “It’s looking really positive under [under-19 coach] Brad Wight,” he said. “We’ve got almost 20 guys. It’s important to get that side up and have sides from juniors all the way through to seniors. “We have to get that right in the next few years.” The appointment of Collins leaves Macedon as the only Riddell District Football League club without a senior coach for the 2018 season.

Sorento update is SUV savvy By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring

MODELS AND PRICES

Kia has given its medium-large Sorento SUV a facelift aimed at giving it a more purposeful appearance. But the biggest changes are out of sight, with new engines and transmission, and added infotainment features and safety. SUVs are all the rage and the revised Kia Sorento is in there to play its part. As before, it’s sold with a choice of petrol and diesel engines and either two- or all-wheel drive.

Model range names have been changed in some instances from those of the outgoing Kia Sorento. There are only small price rises despite significant improvements offered. The latter a smart move when you’re chasing additional sales.

Styling

Diesel pricing: Si $45,490 (+$1000); Sport $48,490 (previously Si Limited +$1000); SLi $50,490 (+$1000); Platinum discontinued; GT-Line $58,990 (+$500).

Pricing for the petrol models: Si $42,990 (+$2000); Sport $44,990 (previously called the Si Limited +$1000); SLi $46,990 (+$1000).

New Sorento features revised front and rear bumpers, LED headlamps on the GT-Line and tail-lamps (SLi and GT-Line). Sorento has 17, 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels depending on model; these are also to a new design. Cabin changes are minimal – a four-spoke steering wheel, revised instruments and a new climate control LCD display. Softer touch materials are used for a more upmarket look.

Infotainment

For 2018, the Sorento is available with an eight-inch touchscreen with navigation. Android Auto is designed to work with Android phones running 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher; Apple CarPlay, for iPhone 5 or newer. A high-end Harman/Kardon sound system is used in Sorento SLi and GT-Line grades. The powerful 640-watt, 10-speaker surround-sound audio system features QuantumLogic Surround Sound technology.

Powertrain

The 3.5-litre petrol engine is virtually all-new for Sorento. Though the outputs (206 kW and 306 Nm) are only slightly higher than before, the torque spread has been widened and emissions and fuel consumption are lower.

The updated Kia Sorento has purposeful has new looks and major under bonnet revisions. (Supplied)

Kia’s 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine (147 kW/441 Nm) has received minor revisions. The biggest news is that both automatics are now eight-speed units (up from six), permitting lower ratios at the bottom for round-town work and a high top gear for very comfortable cruising.

Safety

The new Driver Attention Alert (DAA) system combats distracted or drowsy driving. The

system monitors a number of inputs from the vehicle and the driver. It sounds a warning chime and displays a graphic in the instrument binnacle if it senses a lapse in concentration from the driver.

Driving

Front seats are large and comfortable. Legroom in the second row seats is impressive; tall adults will have little need to do a deal with those in the front about stretch-out space.

The third row seats are aimed at the kids and aren’t too difficult to get in and out of. We took a range of 2018 Kia Sorentos on a sensible drive program organised by Kia out of Sydney airport as part of the launch. Ride comfort is good as changes have been made to the suspension and steering by the Kia team of Australian and South Korean engineers. The emphasis has been moved slightly to the comfort direction in the eternal ride-versus-handling equation. We feel they have got it spot on. Noise and vibration reduction is impressive, with the feel of a luxury car on smooth roads and only a mild increase in noise levels when tackling rough ’n’ ready Aussie country backroads. But coarse-chip roads did create quite a bit of noise, and even some vibration. Rough dirt backroads failed to upset the big Korean people movers in the ride and handling stakes. New Sorento is on sale now and has Kia’s industry-leading seven-year terms on warranty, capped-price servicing and roadside assist.
