Mo Bros take up the fight By Serena Seyfort

(Shawn Smits)

Fifty young Sunbury men have banded together to raise funds and awareness for men’s mental health after being rocked by the recent loss of a mate. The Sunbury Mo Bros have raised more than $18,000 in two weeks for men’s mental health charity Movember ahead of a fundraising evening later this month. Organiser Corey Hansen said the team’s efforts were not solely aimed at raising money but establishing awareness of mental health issues and the community’s willingness to support one another. “We all want to get around each other,” Mr Hansen said. “It’s times like these that we stick together and show each other what great mates we are. “We’ve all been through a lot and now we should spread some awareness out there to help make sure this doesn’t happen to others … everyone is here to help.” The Sunbury Mo Bros is centred around the Sunbury Lions Football Netball Club, whose players have been

devastated by the recent passing of former player Tanner Bell. Movember, a national campaign, encourages men to grow a moustache during the month of November and raise money to highlight men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. But the Sunbury Mo Bros wanted to take the campaign further and have organised a Movember Fundraiser evening. Posters advertising the event pay tribute to Mr Bell. “We have recently lost a great mate in Tanner Bell, an amazing young man with a smile as big as Luna Park who was loved by all,” the flyers read. The event will be held at Sunbury Football Social Club, at Clarke Oval, Sunbury, on Friday, November 24, from 7pm. The evening will include games, a DJ, silent auctions and raffles. Entry will cost $10. To donate to the men’s efforts visit www.movember.com.au and search for The Sunbury Mo Bro’s team.

The stakes were as high off the track as they were on it at the 2017 Kyneton Cup. Pink hues, florals and towering headwear were first past the post in this year’s fashions on the field competition. Trackside, thousands cheered home Dodging Bullets in the $100,000 main race. Cup organisers were thrilled as the sunny spring day drew large crowds last Wednesday. ■ Full story: Page 3

Kyneton’s cup colours

Rekindling Macedon’s cup connection

By Serena Seyfort Thousands of racegoers were met with a pleasant sunny day for the 2017 Kyneton Cup last Wednesday. The crowd roared as Dodging Bullets triumphed in the 2000 metre race of the day, claiming the $100,000 prize. Bright, spring colours prevailed in the Watergardens Town Centre Fashion on the Field competition. The Couple of the Day title was awarded to the Sunshine Coast’s Eliza Icke and Richmond’s Michael McAlpine (pictured below left). Macedon’s Margie Randall reigned as the Macedon Ranges Local Lady. New Zealander Olivia Moor was selected as the Lady of the Day, with Clonbinane’s Casey Young runner-up. Karlie Owen from Cranbourne South won the millinery category. Sergeant Peter Law applauded attendees and the event managers on behalf of local police. “We’re very happy with the behaviour of the crowd,” Sergeant Law said. “It was a jovial crowd and a very well-organised event.” Sergeant Law said only one person was lodged for drunken behaviour. Local police breath-tested more than 200 drivers and none tested positive for drugs or an alcohol reading above the legal limit. Sergeant Law said there were 10 offences for violating road safety laws.

The winning horse in this year’s Melbourne Cup is recuperating in Mount Macedon before he is returned to Ireland. Rekindling and the cup’s runner-up Johannes Vermeer are both part-owned by Lloyd Williams, whose Australian horse facility is Macedon Lodge, in Mount Macedon. Mr Williams’ success of taking out both first and second in the prestigious race has made him the first horse owner to quinella the race in 157 years. Mr Williams told reporters all he could think when his horses were going head to head was “I wish the post would come up quickly”. Another of William’s horses – Almandin – claimed the Melbourne Cup last year. Williams has now taken out six Melbourne Cups (in 1981, 1985, 2007, 2012, 2016 and 2017). The 77-year-old said he has a long-time love of the iconic race. “Why do I like it? I’m a Melburnian. I first saw a Melbourne Cup when I snuck into a hotel after school at the age of eight and that’s when it made such an impact on me.” Although Williams has a state-of-the art horse facility in Macedon Ranges, he also buys European horses and has them trained overseas. It seems Macedon Lodge now acts as a holiday retreat for the horses. Celebrating his success last Tuesday, Williams said the triumphant horse, and the runner-up, were headed to his Mount Macedon property to “enjoy some lovely green grass” . Williams said Rekindling would then return home to Ireland to compete in other races, such as the Ascot Gold Cup.

Family finds way forward By Serena Seyfort A Riddells Creek family’s world has been turned upside down by a life-changing medical disaster. Neal Furze was enjoying a camping trip with his family and friends during the grand final long weekend when he became ill. At first Neal thought he had a bad case of gastro, until two days later he developed purple rashes and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance. Wife Kristine Rawlinson said doctors told her to bring their children, Sam, 11, and Eloise, 8, to see their dad because he was either going to die or be placed in an induced coma.

Neal spent three and a half weeks in intensive care being treated for septicaemia and sepsis. “The whole time it was touch and go,” Kristine said. Kristine said Neal lost 18 kilograms and the blood poisoning caused his fingers and feet to die from a lack of circulation. Last week, Neal’s feet and legs were amputated to mid-calf. His fingers and thumbs were removed, except for part of a thumb and part of a pinky finger. When he is well enough, he will learn to use prosthetic limbs. Neal will no longer be able to continue his job as a photo copier technician or to tend the family’s 1.2-hectare property. “He’s dealing with all this amazing grief,” Kristine said. “We’ve got to look at how we go

forward as a family. We’re going to have to get a car that can take a wheelchair and get the house adapted.” Kristine has had to take time off her full-time job during Neal’s ordeal. She said the support of the local community had been amazing. In the past three weeks, locals have donated about $21,000 to an online fund set up for the

family. Friends have been helping Kristine with meals, and this weekend Neal’s workmates from Melbourne will do a working bee at the family’s Riddells Creek home. “I’m not crying about how sad this situation is – I’m crying about how impressed I am at how beautiful people are,” Kristine said. Queensland’s tiny scarlet honeyeaters have been making the move to Victoria this year, with the Macedon Ranges a choice destination. Last year, only 17 scarlet honeyeaters were spotted in Victoria during the Aussie Backyard Bird Count. This year, 139 were recorded. A pair of scarlet honeyeaters has taken up residence in Mark Poyser’s garden in Kyneton. He initially saw them feeding on butterfly bushes early one morning. “Now they are feeding on the wisteria and the echium nectar and I can see them any time of day,” he said. David Hartney has seen two scarlet honeyeaters in a grevillea bush on his block in Woodend. “First time sighted in 20 years at this location,” he said. Rick, who did not share his surname, said he had seen a honeyeater upsurge. “We have them around our house and in nearby forest in Gisborne in good numbers,” he said. Serena Seyfort with The Age

Police shocked at driving figures By Serena Seyfort Police have condemned the “disgraceful” actions of drivers who attended concerts in the Macedon Ranges earlier this month. Local police co-ordinated a joint operation to catch drivers leaving the Midnight Oil concert at Hanging Rock and the Jimmy Barnes show at Sutton Grange Winery both on the night of Saturday, November 4. Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks said 13 drink drivers were detected among the 2600 drivers

tested, all of which had been at one of the concerts. Eleven of the drink drivers were transporting passengers. One driver’s blood alcohol level was recorded at 1.32 per cent – almost three times the legal limit. Senior Sergeant Brooks described the result as “very disappointing”. “From a police point-of-view, the behaviour of drivers was disgraceful,” he said. “There’s no reason behind it – it shows a complete disregard for the road rules.” “People were prepared to take the risk

hurting or killing themselves or others.” Senior Sergeant Brooks said on top of being aware of the safety risk, he thought drivers would expect the usual police presence. “Did you not expect to see us there?” was his message for drink drivers. “We will catch you.”

Three booze buses and eight highway patrol vehicles were monitoring the area. He advised concert-goers to always include getting home in their plans for events. More driving offences were recorded in Macedon Ranges in a specialised operation for the Melbourne Cup long-weekend. From November 3-7, five drink drivers were apprehended, as well as 34 speeders, nine drivers disobeying traffic signals, one driver using a mobile phone and five drivers in unregistered vehicles.

All the fun of the fayre This weekend the 17th annual Malmsbury Village Fayre is set to be bigger and better than ever. Held in Malmsbury Botanic Gardens, the not-for-profit community event will take on a garden party theme as it expands around the lake for the first time. More than 2000 people have attended in previous years, and fayre committee president Sue Everett said organisers anticipated locals and tourists would support the event again. “This year the fayre is going to be huge,” Ms Everett said. “We are expecting thousands of people from across central Victoria as well as those travelling up from Melbourne by car and V/Line train.” More than 80 food trucks, croquet, a stilt performance, a medieval troupe, sword fighting, local wines and live music will be among the attractions on Sunday. Ms Everett said visitors would find entertainment for all ages.

“Enjoy the music while the kids are entertained with free face-painting, jumping castles and storytelling in the teddy bears’ picnic area,” she said. “You can even grab a few beautiful locally-made Christmas presents.” Malmsbury Village Fayre will be held on Sunday, November 19, from 10am-4pm in Malmsbury Botanic Gardens. Entry $2. Details: www.malmsburyvillagefayre.org.au Serena Seyfort

MY PLACE Robyn Smith has proudly been part of Sunbury for almost 30 years. The primary school teacher enjoys sharing her passions for sustainability and education. She chats with Serena Seyfort.

I’ve been part of the Sunbury community for nearly 30 years. My two daughters grew up in Sunbury, so I was involved with playgroups and kinder and dancing and schools and little athletics. For work, I’m a teacher. I’ve worked at Salesian College, St Anne’s Catholic Primary School and now I’m teaching at Killara Primary School, where I’ve been since 2000. Tell us about your local pursuits regarding sustainability and the environment. Last month I was named as one of four finalists for the Primary Teacher of the Year in the ResourceSmart Schools Awards, which was pretty special. I find it a privilege to be a teacher, to teach the next generation, and if I can make a difference in my pupils’ lives I’ve done what I set out to do. Since 2010, I’ve been leading the sustainability team at Killara Primary School. We look at how the school integrates sustainability into the curriculum and within the school environment in the categories of waste, water, energy, biodiversity. We involve the children. We’ve planted trees all around Sunbury. And in each classroom we have two representatives we call HEROs – heating, electricity, recycling officers. Also last month, I volunteered and was selected as a member of Hume council’s Sustainability Taskforce. It’s made up of Hume council members and a selected group of people from different parts of the community. Starting next year, we will

meet with the council quarterly, acting as their conduit to the community. We’re looking at giving feedback and action on the different environmental and sustainability strategies that the council has in store. What do you like about living in Sunbury? Sunbury just has a great feel to me. The people are lovely. As a teacher, I know a lot of people … I can go shopping and it’s never a 10-minute shop. It’s always an hour or so because I bump into people that I know and catch up with past students I’ve taught. We have a bit of everything in Sunbury – we have the shopping centre, the restaurants, the green areas. I just love the feel of it. Do you have a favourite local place? My favourite place would be anywhere outdoors … the Nook with the stream running through or the wetlands up at Emu Bottom. Anywhere you can appreciate what we’ve got. I love getting out into nature and being in greenery. If you could change anything about Sunbury, what would it be? I don’t know whether I would change anything. I just hope that it doesn’t get too big. Sunbury has grown in the 30 years I’ve known it, but to me it still has that small-town feel. I’d like to keep that. I think it’s great – I’m happy where I am.

The Harvey Norman go-to man When asked what he loves best about being owner of Harvey Norman Furniture at Watergardens, Binh Nguyen is quick with a response: “Meeting the locals in my culturally diverse patch.” Binh, 35, has been with Harvey Norman for more than eight years, gaining loads of invaluable experience in Melbourne and Sydney stores. “I started in Maribyrnong, moved to Chadstone and then packed up to help run Sydney’s Caringbah before relocating to the flagship Auburn store,” he says. “A couple of years ago, my wife and I returned to our hometown Melbourne, this time with a littlie in tow. “I felt immediately at home in the Watergardens store and I’ve loved getting to know my community, listening to what they need and presenting solutions.” “We have an exciting mix of customers and that can present the types of challenges I get a buzz from. It might be a young couple, with a tight

budget, looking for a sofa to see them through the renting years. Or it might be a family looking for a statement piece for their new home. “All our staff have the knowledge, expertise and experience to help guide that couple to the right choice. Our team have the latest trends at their fingertips and understand how to put together the right look.” Binh is expecting an extra busy time leading up to Christmas. “This is when people think about hosting a Christmas gathering,” he says. “Whether they need a new dining setting or something else to give their home a fresh look, there are ways to introduce a new decor item to achieve the biggest bang for buck. We can help with ideas – that’s what we’re all about.” Harvey Norman Furniture Watergardens, 450 Melton Highway, Taylors Lakes. Inquiries: 9449 6300, www.harveynorman.com.au

In the hands of a good chef, these are among our go-to dishes

The world is our oyster when it comes to tradition For example, across Asia the diversity of produce is astounding, as it is in Europe’s sunny climes where dishes making it to tables explode with innovation and imagination. Geez, even poverty-inspired fried bugs have become a “tradition” some chefs are exploring. But head up to, say, Iceland and fermented whale meat is a tradition. People all over the world have “traditional, authentic” cuisines – you know, the ones the foodie nerds love – sometimes merely because there isn’t much else to be had. With chefs in Australia having access to a cornucopia of home-grown produce, from sea to river to paddock, it’s little wonder that broad church modern Aussie cuisine is a

perennial favourite with the punters. What is a wonder, though, is the keenness of food industry pundits to be the first to announce new fads, as if that’s a recommendation of the food in itself.

An absolute delight with a fresh, yet delicate taste.

Our multicultural society throws up a huge banquet table of treats and it’s the dishes that turn superb produce into relatable food that make dining out the pleasure it should be.

Paired beautifully with pizza of the season of fresh salmon, cheese, capers & topped with Spanish onion and wild rocket.

Go meat and veg done well. Go fish ’n’ chips with a twist. Go chargrilled scallops. Go dumplings and noodles and quesadillas and curry 100 ways. Go pasta and pizza.

Come in & try both. Delicious!

In the hands of a good chef, these are among our go-to dishes. This isn’t a smug brag though … it’s just geography, after all.

Every nation’s cuisine gets labelled “traditional” through sheer dint of availability of produce and what can be done with it.

A delightful late Victorian house on a 2831-square metre block, “Corvalis” is replete with era character and rustic charm, as well as more recent updates. Ranged along a traditional hallway are three bedrooms and a big two-way bathroom with dual basins in a solid timber vanity. The main bedroom, sharing this bathroom, has twin walk-in robes, while the fourth bedroom at the rear accesses another two-way bathroom next to the laundry. Living rooms include a family room, lounge room with fireplace, and adjoining study and dining room. The country-rustic kitchen has timber cabinetry and slow-combustion cooker. Outdoors, find a brick-paved patio, a rustic barn, chook pen, workshop, garage and irreplaceable mature gardens. Potential, including for subdivision STCA, abounds.

As fresh as new paint, this revamped house in a tranquil garden setting is packed with family appeal. It’s a four-minute drive to Main Street’s The Bay Tree eatery, with primary school a bit further on. Angled ceilings, a pleasing neutral palette, well-dressed windows and bamboo floorboards create a harmonious, contemporary vibe. Of five newly carpeted fitted bedrooms, the main has built-in and walk-in robes plus a fresh en suite. The all-white main bathroom sparkles. An open-plan lounge room, dining and family area (with wood heater) abuts the all-white kitchen which has loads of drawers, walk-in pantry and Smeg appliances. A small rear deck has steps down to the enormous backyard which has several mature trees. The property has an integrated double carport and a four-car Colorbond shed/workshop with power.

In a stone’s toss of the village shops and eateries and with views of Mount Macedon, this townhouse holds much appeal for families looking for as-new sparkle and minimal garden upkeep. Floating floor planks anchor the living area, bedrooms have grey carpet, tiling is grey, windows come with white roman or grey rollerblinds and wall paint is crisp white. The main bedroom, with walk-through robe and en suite, is downstairs, while two more are upstairs; each of these has robes. The main bathroom up here is all agleam. The light-filled all-white kitchen has plenty of storage and all the expected mod-cons. The laundry is separate and there’s a downstairs toilet. A split-system, ceiling fans and gas ducted heating deliver temperature control. A covered deck faces a compact yard laid with synthetic turf and the double garage is remote-controlled.

Stunning Melbourne skyline views, a distinctive street presence, an art deco-saluting interior and a block of about 1200 square metres – this extrovert property is one to fall in love with. Multiple ground floor levels, extravagant ceiling treatments, vast spaces, expanses of jarrah floorboards, high ceilings and dramatic angles are high-impact. Spiral stairs head up to a large living room, and extra-big main bedroom with balcony access, walk-in robe and glam en suite with tub. As well as a study, four more fitted bedrooms (one with compact en suite) main bathroom and powder room are downstairs. Lavish living rooms include dining, games, family and casual meals. The kitchen is chic, large and fully equipped with shiny appliances. A back verandah, basement storage, side gates, drive-through double garage and more are included.

Property of the week

GISBORNE SOUTH 47 Tweddle Road, 3437 RT Edgar: 5428 8633

Price: $1.295 million – $1.424 million

Brampton Park, a property of about 4.05 hectares, is a beautiful place in every respect – from the innately elegant house and stunning gardens to unbeatable pastoral scenery and pristine land for critters or crops. A journey through solar-powered gates, down a poplar-lined driveway and past a dam edged with willows lands you at the lovely house precinct – where a green thumb’s handiwork puts on an impressive show. It’s really a feast for the eyes at every turn at this fab spread which, incredibly, is within a five-minute trip of Calder Freeway. Verandahs, dripping with wisteria and

grape vines, entirely wrap the house in leafy beauty, while a gable-roofed pergola shelters the front door. Beyond this, a timelessly chic abode unfolds, where slate flooring combines with white or latte wall paint, large garden-view windows are dressed mainly in roman blinds and other decor elements are all-class. Living areas include a carpeted lounge-dining room, open to the entry walkway; and a gorgeous family-meals space with wood heater (transfer kit) and extensive bespoke cabinetry, plus a sliding door to a covered dining area. Scads of white vinyl-wrap joinery and a

natural-stone island bench to seat four are salient kitchen features, while a walk-in pantry and top-notch shiny appliances are others. The laundry is sleek, stylish and storage-rich. There’s a study (or fifth bedroom) through double doors, while the four snazzily decorated fitted bedrooms include the main with walk-in robe and glam en suite, fully tiled in a marble look. The same look is in the main bathroom, which also has an ovoid tub and walk-in shower. Underfloor heating and split-system take care of indoor climate control. The outdoor treats just keep coming.

Lavish, geometrically laid out hedging enclosing standard roses is a standout garden spot, as are the velvet lawns, riotous cottage plantings and a wonderful array of exotic trees, some rare. A cute chook coop adjoins a run and herbs are in a boxed bed. Serious stuff includes four electric-fenced paddocks, three dams – one with electric pump, one shared with boundary neighbour – 80,000-litre water tanks, a big hay/ machinery shed, cattle yards and crush, a loose box and 12x6-metre workshop. Building your own home, what to do before the first sod is turned Building a home will likely be the single biggest investment you ever make. To protect yourself from rogue building or plumbing practitioners, here are a few important steps the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) recommends you take before and during construction.

Top seven warning signs of an unregistered builder: • Your builder is not a member of an industry body. • They do not ask you to enter into a contract before the project starts. • They ask for too much money up front or at each set payment stage. By law in

(iStock)

Before your project starts: • Confirm your building practitioners are registered and that plumbing work is carried out by, or under the supervision of, a licensed plumber. Ask to see their VBA ID card – which all practitioners should carry. • Ask to see physical examples of their work and to speak with previous clients. • It is essential to select a building surveyor who is independent of your builder. • Appoint either your council’s building surveyor or a private building surveyor of your choice. If you ask for quotes from multiple private building surveyors, ensure they know this so they don’t wrongly assume you have engaged them. • Read the information on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website before signing a contract to ensure it meets legal requirements. • Ensure your builder gives you a domestic building insurance policy or a certificate of currency covering your property before construction starts. The builder’s name on the contract should match the name on the insurance policy.

Victoria, a deposit can be no more than 5 per cent of the total project cost (projects over $20,000). • They aren’t prepared to show you what homes they have recently built or to provide

you with the opportunity to talk to some of their previous clients. • They cannot or will not show you their VBA ID card. • You cannot find the builder’s or plumber’s

name in the VBA’s Find a Practitioner tool. • You are not given a copy of your builder’s domestic building insurance policy or a certificate of currency covering your property before construction.

SPORT Thumping win puts Gisborne back in the groove

Graham Quaife’s rink had a massive win on Saturday. (Damian Visentini)

Gisborne wasn’t in a mood for mucking around in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade, doing a demolition job on Bacchus Marsh Blue. Coming off a loss to Kyneton Golf the week before, Gisborne was firing on all four cylinders on Saturday. With the closest of the rink results being 19 shots, Gisborne won by a massive 100 shots, 158 (18)-58 (0). Graham Quaife’s rink won 41-18, that of Sam Boslem won 32-13 and Darren Fletcher’s rink won 37-16. The rink of Matthew Bacon had the biggest win of all – 48-11. Gisborne president Ian Ball said it was a good performance. “You have to make sure you have to get the wins on the board no matter who you play,” he said. “We had to come back and regroup after last week otherwise we would have looked a bit foolish.”

Gisborne finds itself playing a different role – that of being the hunted – after winning first division 1 premiership last season. Ball said that while the players thought they would be up there with the top sides, they were by no means the favourites. “We’re enjoying the ride,” he said. “We’re still confident we will be around the top. Kyneton Golf [which Gisborne lost to] will be among the mix and they know how to win the big games. “On a neutral green, we think we can match it with them. We’re more than happy and just bumping along nicely.” Ball said the club had managed to keep most of the premiership side in place. Glenn Johnston jr has joined Glenroy, while John Bell decided not to play. Ball said one of the biggest things for the club was depth. It is the only club to have two second division teams. It also has a third division side, making it the only club in the competition with four sides.

and are now capable of playing women’s cricket. “Kaitlyn and Tasmin Muller have come across from Romsey and Amber Andrews has come back to the club.”

By Tara Murray Gisborne’s talented women’s side continues to make inroads in Cricket Victoria’s Women’s Community Cricket’s north west competition. With a young playing list, the Dragons have decided to put an emphasis on development and building a team. On Sunday, the Dragons produced their highest score of the season, but it wasn’t enough against Tullamarine. The Demons piled on the runs, making 3-266 off its overs. Tanae Bannan, Shaelee Bannan and Katrina Hoenig were the wicket takers for the Dragons. The Dragons were bowled out for 166, with four overs remaining. Shelley Ellis was the standout with the bat, making 54. Speaking before the match, Dragons’ coach Tim Bannan said after a slow start they were starting to get into the groove of things. “We’ve got a lot of young girls just starting cricket,” he said. “Most nights we’ve got nine or 10 at training. We used to have four or five players at most with everyone travelling for work. It’s been really good.” The Dragons have dropped down a division this season and are playing in the north-west competition. Bannan said with such a young playing group they made the decision to help further the players development. He said while winning would be good, it was more about focusing on helping the players understand how to play. “We lost some key players to other clubs and higher grades,” he said. “It’s a better decision for the club to allow the girls to learn against players more their level. “The next two to three seasons are about rebuilding. The girls have been playing with the boys and we want them to come through and play with us.” Bannan said while the results hadn’t all gone their way the playing group was starting to show what it could do. The Dragons lost their first game against a more experienced Altona Roosters side, but were more competitive against St Anthonys in their next match. “Against St Anthonys we made 140-odd. One of our openers, Kameka Barnes, who has played half a dozen matches, batted the whole innings She didn’t make a lot of runs, but looked comfortable. “The girls have been fantastic and are capable of doing some good things. They’re really enjoying it.” “My two daughters played junior cricket

“We’re very fortunate to have that depth,” he said. “Each week we’ve got two or three players missing … we get people to step up and you don’t miss the other players. “Since we changed our green to synthetic we’ve been able to attract players a lot easier.” Gisborne is one of three teams with a 3-1 record as a gap between the top four and the bottom four opens up. In other results, Kyneton Golf remained undefeated with a 105 (14)-97 (4) win against Bacchus Marsh Gold. The loss was Bacchus Marsh’s first of the season. Romsey won three rinks in its 105 (16)-95 (2) win against Trentham and Kyneton won a thriller against Lancefield. Just one shot separated the two teams, with Kyneton winning 94 (14)-93 (4). Gisborne Yellow, Macedon, Woodend and Gisborne Red were the winners in division 2.

The Dragons sit eighth after six rounds and face Hoppers Crossing this week. In other results, Geelong, Altona Roosters, Craigieburn and Melton Centrals all had wins.

John Laing is through to the final of the Romsey Golf Club’s shield that bears his name. Laing, 83, has never won the shield that was named in his honour 30 years ago. He will face Mick Nicholls jr in Saturday’s final. Laing won through to the final by defeating Bob McLennan on the 19th hole. A club stalwart, Laing has held just about every position possible at the club and is a long-time life member. He said he would be embarrassed if he was to take home the trophy. He said he was surprised to even make the final. “I’m an ordinary sort of golfer,” he said. “I play golf more for leisure and pleasure. I’ve won a few pairs medals and events, but not singles. “I played all through the winter … with the wet greens and wind, players my age have difficultly hitting the ball as far. “I used to play off 18 and it drifted to 22 to 24. With the winter conditions, it has gone over 30. With the weather getting better, I can hit it a bit easier. There’s a bit of luck involved.” Laing said that while it would be nice to win the shield, at the end of the day it didn’t matter. “As long as I play up to expectation I will be happy,” he said. “I want to play to the best of my ability. “It’s a bit of an unusual position to be in. I didn’t even think I would qualify as it’s a knockout event.” Despite his age, Laing has no plans of putting the clubs away any time soon. “I play every week and I brought a cart last year to take the pressure off going around the course,” he said. “I’ll keep playing as long as I enjoy it and I’m fit enough. I’ve been playing for 50-odd years. I feel lost on Saturdays if I’m not playing.” Nicholls jr won through to the final by defeating Kevin Dunn one up. In the club’s Saturday competition, Anthony Freeman took the win from Jim Patton and Scott Williams. In the women’s knockout final, Elaine Scanlon defeated Jenny Hartley. Tara Murray

Cannons turn to experience to provide future pathways

New Calder Cannons regional coaching director Ross Smith. (The Age)

After 12 months out of football, new Calder Cannons regional coaching director Ross Smith decided he wanted to get back into the game. Smith stepped away from football after 30 years’ involvement which included 224 games as an AFL player and 17 years as a coach. He held assistant coaching roles at Geelong, North Melbourne, Hawthorn and Richmond. Last week Smith was appointed as the Cannons’ first regional coaching director. The new full-time role includes coaching the Cannons’ boys TAC Cup side. Smith said he would have a hands on approach with local clubs in the Cannons’ region. A big focus of the role is to try and improve the standard of junior coaching and provide better pathways. Smith is no stranger to the north-west region – his sons play at Aberfeldie and he played his junior football at Jacana.

“The ability to develop football in the region was what really attracted me to the role,” he said. “I’ll be working with junior footy clubs to look at the curriculum of what they are teaching. “I’ll be working with clubs to provide a document [regional coaching strategy] of sorts. It’ll have training drills that we can give them access to and it’ll help with training coaches. “Making the role full-time, it helps give the resources to help assist these clubs.” Smith said about 30 per cent of his role would be focused on the Cannons and their program. He said he would look to tap into his AFL experiences to help the whole Cannons program. “We want to get some consistency across all the Cannons teams, the boys, girls, under-16s and under-15s.” He said one of his biggest focuses would

be ensuring the players who come out of the Cannons program are better people than when they entered it. “We want them prepared for life.” Cannons’ talent manager Ian Kyte said the new role would help strengthen the links between the Cannons and the community. “Ross has experience at the elite level, and this will only benefit our players and coaches in the Calder region. “With the expanded full-time role, our Calder coach will now be a vital resource for junior coaches in local competitions, providing them with further development and learning opportunities.” Kyte thanked out going coach Andrew Johnston for his work over the past three years. The Cannons finished eighth in Johnston’s first two seasons, before missing finals this year. Tara Murray

United piles on the runs By Tara Murray Sunbury United produced its best batting performance of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup season on Saturday against Gisborne. Looking for its second win of the season, United found a groove with the bat and posted 9-304 off its overs. The middle order did the damage for United, with Joshua Wallace leading the way making 94. He was well supported by Lance Watts (72) and Damien Edwards (61). United president Chris Linton was thrilled to see a performance like that. “It’s fantastic for the guys to get a score like that and especially against Gisborne, the reigning premiers,” he said. “For Josh it would have been his first century in McIntyre Cup. He had a job to do, which he did and batted really well. “We have to finish it off this week.”

Jay King battled hard for Gisborne, taking 5-91 off 23 overs. Despite a good first day, Linton knows a win is anything but certain. The Dragons batsmen have been in good form in recent weeks. “We definitely have to bowl really well,” he said. “The ground was pretty quick yesterday so we have to make sure we bowl in the right areas. “Leif [Louwen-Skovdam] has been bowling really well and we hope he can keep that up.” Linton said they were slowly working into the season, after an interrupted pre-season. He said they had managed to get several players back to the club, which had helped add extra depth. United’s second XI made 400 plus at the weekend, with the average age of that side 25. “We haven’t been consistent … We haven’t had the best start to the season and we’re a couple of games behind where we would like to be,” he said. “We had a few guys retire the last couple of years and got a few other players back. “David Edwards came back on board last year after two years in England. Steven Fogarty played at Diggers Rest last season and has returned. “It’s great to have Paul Newton back and Peter Jaeger has returned after a couple of years out.” Having returned to McIntyre Cup this season, with the division expanding from eight to 10 teams, United is focused on ensuring it stays in the top division. “We just want to play the best cricket we can and maybe that will mean playing finals.”

In other matches, Riddell is well on its way to victory against Rupertswood. The Bombers are 1-66 needing 95 for the win. Daniel Fisk took 4-7 for the Bombers. Bacchus Marsh has set Lancefield a big run

chase, having made 8-345. Romsey made 9-275 against Sunbury with skipper Ben Way making an unbeaten 175. Woodend and Diggers Rest will play a one-dayer, after play was unable to get under way on Sunday.

Eleven was the number of the day between Sunbury and Essendon (2) in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. Playing on the 11th of the 11th, all four rinks were separated by 11 shots as the two sides finished 79 shots apiece. Marc Bullows rink won 24-13 and Mark Cowan’s rink won 27-16 to give Sunbury two rink wins, while Todd and Shane Trewarne’s rinks both lost 25-14, meaning each team took home nine points apiece. It’s the first time Shane Trewarne has been a skip this season in a tactical change. Elise Cowan, who had been skipping, moved to the third in her father’s rink. Despite sitting above Essendon on the ladder, Sunbury’s David Glennon said it was always difficult to get a win at Windy Hill. Sunbury trailed heading into the final end, before a Todd Trewarne shot tied the match. Peter White, who led for Bullows’ rink, and Mark Cowan, were the standouts for Sunbury in the tie. Despite the result, Sunbury remains in fourth, but the gap has closed with fifth-placed Melton beating third-placed Werribee. The top two sides, Glenroy and Moonee Valley, remain unbeaten and have a gap on the rest of the pack. Overall it was a good day for Sunbury, with four teams getting the win along with the top side tieing. The second side, which started the season 0-4, made it two wins in a row, to move to 2-4. The pennant competition will have a break this weekend. Tara Murray

Sunbury Lions’ coaches. Front: Andrew Hall, Jamie Bramble, Ben Jordan and Ashley Pritchard. Back: Dylan Coventry, Tony Lucas and Nathan Webb.

By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions have put a big emphasis on youth development with their coaching appointments for next year’s Ballarat Football League season. With Ben Jordan on board for a second season as senior coach, the club has put a strong team behind him. Jordan said that from a club perspective, they were pleased to have all their coaches signed and ready to go. Last year, Jordan wasn’t appointed until early November, while some of the other coaches weren’t appointed until early this year. “Being the second year under myself at the club the players are already familiar with me and my approach,” Jordan said. “We’re not starting as far back as last year and I’ve formed

a relationship with those guys. There’s a strong development focus and we’re putting our energy and resources into that.” Jamie Bramble, who coached the Lions under-14s to a premiership this year and previously coached the under-18s, will be an assistant coach. He’ll also coach one of the under-15 teams. Rupertswood’s games record holder Nathan Webb is joining the Lions and will also be an assistant to Jordan. Dylan Coventry has stepped up to the reserves coaching role, having been an assistant coach of that side last season. Most pleasing for the club is having its under-18.5 and under-17 coaches appointed already. Both these sides have struggled for playing

numbers the past couple of seasons and coaches have been appointed late in the process. Tony Lucas, who was an assistant coach for the seniors this year, will coach the under-18.5. Jordan said Lucas, who was an under-18.5 premiership coach at Rupertswood, was the ideal man for the job. “I don’t think there is a better credentialed under-age coach,” he said. “He’s the perfect guy to bring them through into senior football.” Andrew Hall joins the Lions from Rupertswood and will coach the under-17 team. The coaching news comes as the Lions continue to announce players who have re-signed for next season. Nearly 30 players have signed on for next season, including the most recent signings, Greg Hay, Reece Wood and Mick Edwards.

Two former Gisborne players have been named in the Victoria Country under-19 team for the National Championships. Tom Rogers, who was in the team last season, has been named alongside Roby Lane, who has been selected for the first time. Meanwhile, Gisborne’s Joshua McDonald and Samuel Mackay, Riddell’s Sam Dempsey and Rupertswood’s Emerson White have been named in the Central Highlands team for the under-16 state championships.

Small car big on performance By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring When micro cars first came out, the joke went, you need two – one for each foot. The roller-skate analogy could equally be applied to the new Hyundai Kona – but for one thing. In latest technology, comfort and convenience, the small SUV is kitted out almost as well as its big brothers, Tucson and Santa Fe. Like its bigger siblings, the Kona comes in four levels of specification – Active, Active with Safety Pack, Elite and Highlander. There’s a choice of two petrol drivetrains – a 2.0-litre, naturally-aspirated unit mated with six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive, or a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol unit, matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive. Prices start at $24,500, plus on-road costs, for the Active 2.0 six-speed automatic 2WD, and top out at $36,000 for the Highlander 1.6 turbo AWD with seven-speed double-clutch automatic. The front of the Kona is striking, with daytime running lights being separated from the main headlamp assembly Active has 16-inch wheels with a classic five-spoke design featuring twin spokes; Elite’s 17-inch wheels have a 20-spoke design; Highlander’s 18-inch wheels feature the classic five-spoke look with twin offset spokes in a contrasting black and machined metal finish. Kona will seat five with ample leg room front and back for the average size person. Luggage space is 361 litres with the back seat in place, expanding to an impressive 1143 litres with the rear seat folded. Upmarket features include a head-up display in Highlander projecting a virtual image of drive-related information – speed, audio, cruise

Safety features include forward collision assist, blind spot warning, lane keeping assist, driver inattention warning, high beam assist and rear cross traffic alert for use when reversing out of a parking spot.

DRIVING During a launch drive out of Canberra and through the Yass Valley, the 2.0-litre took some urging off the mark and when pressed did so to the accompaniment of a harsh note. At city speeds, the powertrain was unruffled, producing an adequate ride and handling experience. The 1.6 turbo, on the other hand, was sweet as, slipping between cogs smoothly, resulting in a responsive and spirited drive.

Steering was just as positive and all-wheel drive made for a sure -footed stride on gravel. Kona has benefitted from input by Australian suspension engineers, hence the assuredness of both front-wheel and all-wheel drive models. Hyundai admits it’s coming to the small SUV segment late, leaving the market to the likes of the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Mitsubishi ASX, Subaru XV and Toyota C-HR. But local executives maintain extra time and effort put into the Kona have enabled the company to produce a vehicle with superior performance and packaging. Over to you, punters.
